Note

This issue occurs when multiple copies of the game are being played at the same time under the same IP address, which is usually the case when multiple people attempt to play together in the same household.

Until a proper fix for the issue is introduced, please consider the following workaround:

  1. Sign into the Minecraft Dungeons with an account that owns the game.
  2. After signing in, log out of that account in game (Game settings > Log Out, confirm)
  3. Once an in-game window shows up asking you to log in, fully quit the game (Alt+F4).
  4. Launch the game again and login to the account you want to play on.

An alternative workaround is using a VPN to artificially create a different IP address for each player. Please also read the comments below for other possible solutions.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. start the louncher
  2. select Minecraft Dungeons
  3. click 'Graj' (Play)
  4. click Graj online (Play online)
  5. click 'Rozpocznij grę online'

Expected result:

The game starts and I can play online

Actual result:

The game starts but displays a message every now and then 'Nie można zweryfikować stanu gry....' (The game status cannot be verified. We are sorry but we cannot verify now if you own the game Minecraft Dungeons. Be sure that you have internet connection and try again.)

Print screen of the message attached.

I verified internet connection, restarted router and the connection is fine. I can play online with my friend but message dislays again and again that results problems with character control after the message.

The problem starts after upgrade to 1.8.8.0. It was not before the upgrade.

Catherine Bodet - 2021-05-05 22:55

Same, did not have this issue before the update.
However, there were two of us playing online using the same internet connection.
At first, only one player had the pop up, Only after he logged off, did I start having the issue as well. Not sure if this was a coincidence...

John-Paul Drewes - 2021-05-05 22:57

The same with me. I play together with my husband. We are sitting in the same room on different PC's.

Monika - 2021-05-05 23:27

I also played on the same internet connection with my son.

When I play by myself I do not have a message.

Duy Le - 2021-05-06 03:04

Currently experiencing this issue as well after patching. Did not have this problem yesterday or the day before.

As soon as the game loads from launcher the pop-up message shows up. Hitting  [Confirm] closes the window for about 30 seconds to 1 minute before the pop-up message appears again.

Alex Wittig - 2021-05-06 03:07

Am also experiencing this issue on all four accounts in my family.  All on Windows and all started with v1.8.8.0.  The popup appears repeatedly during play.  Additionally, dismissing the popup makes it so that you can no longer control your character properly with the mouse (MCD-5813).

Edited to clarify: this is happening on four separate paid accounts, all purchased through Microsoft and launched through the Minecraft Launcher.  We all share an internet connection.  It seems like the game might work as long as only one of us is playing, but as soon as a second person launches the game, all players start getting the popup and are effectively unable to play.

Craft Meister - 2021-05-06 06:59

I'm having the same issue of the message appearing every minute or so.

Duy Le - 2021-05-11 05:58

One thing we noticed is that it doesn't happen as much for the host of the game lobby, only for those that are joined. They'll continuously get the pop-up, and then will lose their mouse cursor every 10-20 seconds.

Björn Sandlund - 2021-05-11 15:07

Can just confirm the claims that if one of my sons play it alone its alright but if his brother starts the game on another computer (another bought copy of the game ofc) the one that starts second gets the error all the time. AND its not just annoying that it pops upp and block any command, it is a clicking game so trying to hit a mob and then the popup appears just as you click you might get thrown out.

And it all started after the update on 5th may.

Legend_LZD - 2021-05-11 16:13

After the 5th may update I have this question, too, even if I was playing offline game.I hope developers can pay attention to this problem quickly and fix it before the Hidden Depths DLC released on 26th may. This problem affects the game experience very much. But now I don't see any developers pay attention to that.

(Added on 5.12)I asked some of my friends, they said playing mcd launched in minecraft launcher have smaller chance to trigger this bug or no trigger at all but playing mcd launched in microsoft store will easier trigger this.

Virginia McClelland - 2021-05-13 05:14

Also having the same problem on three different, individually purchased accounts, within our household.

All accounts are through the Microsoft Store.

I recently contacted Mojang some days ago, and after a few back and forth emails, was pointed a resolution. It stated i needed to have my Microsoft account logged in on the Minecraft Launcher. Did this, and it seemed to fix the issue.

So when my daughter decided to start playing with my husband again today, before we even started, my husband set her Microsoft account on the MC Launcher. They were able to play with no problem for a few hours.

Now with all accounts seemingly working, we purchased the new seasons pass. My husband bought it on his account, then gifted copies to my daughter and I.

My husband noticed, right after purchasing the Season Pass, the message had returned on my account, and then my daughter's. He logged everyone out on their machines, then logged my daughter in on her account, and then logged himself in. For the first time ever, he got the "Can't Verify You Own The Game" message. So we think it may very well have to do with multiple accounts in the same household.

Michael McClelland - 2021-05-13 05:19

As my wife stated above, all three accounts have the issue, accept the first account to login.

Aine McGee - 2021-05-13 05:24

As my Mom and Dad said above, we are all exeriencing the same issue. First of us to login is fine, but anyone logging into their own accounts after that, get the message.

[MCQA] Bartłomiej Słodkowski - 2021-05-13 10:22

In households with multiple people owning the game on separate accounts, is the game being played by them on separate devices, or on the same computer/console?

Alex Wittig - 2021-05-13 13:02

In our case, separate Windows PCs.

John-Paul Drewes - 2021-05-13 13:03

The same. Two people on different Windows PC's

[MCQA] Bartłomiej Słodkowski - 2021-05-13 13:05

Thank you for the answer, Alex Wittig and John-Paul Drewes!

Additional questions:

  • Did you purchase the Microsoft Store version, the launcher version, or both?
  • What programs are running in the background? Third-party programs such as Cheat Engine are known to cause issues.
John-Paul Drewes - 2021-05-13 13:24

We use the launcher versions of MCD and don't use any cheat engines. There are no programs running in the background.
Also we could play together before we had installed the Update.

Alex Wittig - 2021-05-13 13:24

Launcher versions for all four accounts.  Not much else running in the background.. Discord, Windows Defender, Steam, that's it.  Have never heard of Cheat Engine.

[MCQA] Bartłomiej Słodkowski - 2021-05-13 17:58

Thank you for the answers. The information about the issue has been forwarded to the developers.

Michael McClelland - 2021-05-13 18:15

In my house, my wife, daughter and I, are all on separate windows PCs, and all three of us bought our copies through the Windows Store. We can only launch from the store, I'm guessing cause that is where we bought it. The Minecraft Launcher doesn't recognize we own it. The Launcher does show our individual copies of Minecraft Java, but not Dungeons. Nothing running in the background accept Windows Defender. Also as John-Paul said above, my family and I used to play together just fine. Only recently was this an issue, as in the last week or two.

Edit: Not sure if this info helps, But for about a 3-4 hour period yesterday my daughter and I were able to play together finally, but then after we all bought the Season Pass, the issue got worse. Now instead of the window every 5-10 minutes, it's literally every 60 seconds.

Edit #2: Not sure if this helps, but a little research shows that although our IPv6 addresses are different our IPv4 addresses are the same.

Larry Kolakowski - 2021-05-16 15:48

It seems to be related to the router, either the shared public IP address or NAT.

The "Unable to Verify Game Ownership" issue started happening recently on my PCs.  It happens when a second game on the same local network is started.  I switched one of the PCs to a mobile hotspot so that it's on a separate network with a different public IP address.  It doesn't go through my home router.  The issue no longer happens.  I switched the PC back to the local network and the issue happens again.

I also tried switching one of the PCs to a separate local network in my house, but the issue still happens.  Both wireless networks have the same public IP address since they're connected to the same router.

Update: I enabled a VPN service on my PC so that it has a different public IP address than the other PC. The issue doesn't happen.  I'll use this as a work-around.

Eduardo Kaiser - 2021-05-16 18:31

Yes and No, This is not totally related to the same network because it is occuring on my brothers pc (he is playing co-op with me and my wife but he is in Italy and me and my wife are in Brazil).

But, the issue is happening a lot for me and my wife, every 60 seconds...

Microsoft is concerned about piracy, but this concern has already been exaggerated because it is bothering a LOT of those who buy. Besides that the translation into Portuguese br is very poor, they need better programmers, Jesus ...

Solve this issue please, because I am moving to another game as soon as I find one (very difficult to find one because programers are not engaged enough to concern about best pratices)...

I'm sorry for the harsh words but I'm really nervous about this problem

Björn - 2021-05-17 16:00

I bought the game Hero Edition for me and my friends. Its the launcher version. Windows 10.

After the latest update announcing cloud save, there is no cloud save option and the game has become unplayable due to a message popping up every 2min unable to verify game copy.

And to make things worse the game does not pause and if I dont press enter the game simply exits. Even if I in the frenzy of combat manage to press enter and not exit the game, the controls dont work anymore and I have to press ESC and ESC again to resume play. Oh, did I forget to mention its the same key that exits the game.

Nicely done guys! Sucking the last bit of fun out of the game with an additional bug from day 1 of this game and untested updates.

And I dont want to forget to mention the million other game breaking bugs that have not been solved since day 1. Game crashing, character corruption, and many more.

I have to run a powershell character save solution, otherwise I would still loose my characters after crashes.

This could have been such a great game, but even with a lot of patience there is no improvement.

And who did come up with the idea that after more than a year the cloud save option is to manually download and upload a character? Even terraria has cloud save implemented afterwards - real cloud save and working without any flaw. I never had a game with cloud save problems. Than there was minecraft dungeons. That tought me a lesson, that I should not expect the simplest solutions working in every game for decades, being present here or being fixed in a 12 month period.

This game is dead to me and my friends.

Thanks.

Michael Petter - 2021-05-18 00:05

I have multiple copies of Minecraft Dungeons for Windows 10 for myself and my family.  Each copy is purchased and installed through a DIFFERENT account in the family since Dungeons does not support family sharing.  When only one of the accounts is playing, we never see this message.  When multiple accounts are logged on at home (on different computers) simultaneously, this message appears for all players constantly and does not go away until only 1 client remains connected.

This makes no sense as each copy was purchased, installed, and logged in with a separate MS/XBox account on different computers!  And it was NOT happening when I first purchased the copies.  It's only been happening in the last week or 2 and it's incessant.

This is unacceptable behavior to have persisted as an issue even this long as it constantly interrupts and ruins the game, and especially after paying to purchase MULTIPLE COPIES of this game for each account!

DAVID ARIAS CUQUERELLA - 2021-05-21 13:41

My problem is solved by xbox support, problem in my situation is the use of diferent acount on xbox apps and minecraft dungeons, please try to solve this, if i have sig up one time with my acount it could not be in a moment sesion close, as well xbox support is so great.

Trisha Nichole Bushor - 2021-05-22 01:42

I'm having the same issue as well. My husband, son and myself play on the same network. The pop up only happens when more than one of us is logged in at the same time. It's making the game unplayable.

Brian Buskirk - 2021-05-22 04:57

Same thing here. My son and I have been playing on the same equipment for some time now, but starting this past week, we can no longer play together. We can sometimes start a multiplayer game, but in a few minutes, 1, the other, or both of us will get the unable to verify error. We have both spent money to buy this game for our 2 PC's including all the DLC's. We won't be buying any more DLC's until this is fixed.

Cagri SENKAL - 2021-05-22 09:12

The problem occurs when there are >=2 instances of MD running on the same local network. Somehow MD server assumes this situation as a license problem.

Joseph Borawski - 2021-05-22 17:04

I am experiencing this issue as well when multiple accounts are logged in at the same time.  Microsoft Family account: 1 adult, two children.  Installed Hero Edition (+DLCs) from Windows 10 Microsoft Store under each account.  Work around for now is using a VPN.  This issue seems to be more recent; after the latest 1.8 version with the cloud save as we have never had issues playing together before.

John Taylor - 2021-05-22 21:21

Same issue, 3 accounts and 3 copies on the same network.  If 1 person plays, it's fine.  As soon as a second person starts playing, "Unable to verify game ownership" on all games running.

Rafael Moreira - 2021-05-23 20:43

Can''t play with my girlfriend in same network (2 different accounts), the ownership message is making the game unplayable.

This has not been fixed for a long time, I will start asking for a refund, since I bought it and I can't play.

Michael Petter - 2021-05-24 18:34

I'm frankly shocked that this scenario wasn't tested before this update was released.  Surely this is an extremely common scenario for mutiplayer with multiple family members playing when routed behind the same IP.  This needs to be escalated and fixed immediately.

DAVID ARIAS CUQUERELLA - 2021-05-25 16:41

In my situation, i have no more acounts, i have only one acount, and no more people at my home has minecraft dungeons, problem was first i go on minecraft dungeons with another acount wich has no minecraft dungeons, but it was incredible i could pass with that another acount, in one moment game detected this and close sesion, when i put all corret acounts, problem still , i call xbox support this morning, and xbox support help mi mading a restoration on the app options in my pc, at the moment dungeons work well but i dont know what has happened.

Pedro - 2021-05-25 17:18

It's so interesting to see everybody helping each other so much, but so far this doesn't look like it's a network issue, it might be a bug having to do with buying the game seperately.

[Mojang] Big Beak - 2021-05-25 23:49

For Windows players, we have a potential workaround for everyone to try:

1. Sign into the Minecraft Dungeons with an account that owns the game.
2. After signing in, log out of that account in game (Game settings > Log Out, confirm)
3. Fully quit the game (Alt+F4).
4. Launch the game again and login to the account you want to play on.

That said, the team is still investigating this issue and we appreciate the information everyone has given to help narrow this down.

Hayden Anderson - 2021-05-26 05:57

Mojang is my hero

Björn Sandlund - 2021-05-26 14:05

on step 2-3 you need to Confirm that you get logged out and WAIT for the login window to pop up AND ask you to login before you alt+f4 or it wont work.

Being to hasty with the termination of the game didnt work for me, but since i hade to go to the other computer and do the fix at the same time that one loaded the login window and for that one it worked. Atleast for now.

Michael McClelland - 2021-05-27 09:30

This appears to have worked for my family an I, for the time being. Thanks.

AMANDA SLAPE - 2021-05-28 06:18

Workaround doesn't work, if anything it signed me out faster than before. Events can't even be completed because I can't get 1/4 of the way through one dungeon before the game kicks me out. At least I didn't pay money for this, otherwise I'd likely be pretty upset. Only have one person on this account, only one person with the game, private or online, it kicks me all the same. VPN did nothing but throttle my connection, then kick me.

Brian Buskirk - 2021-05-29 03:00

My son and I have been playing for some time, without problems up until a couple of weeks ago. We both have PC's on the same home network, and NOTHING has changed on our end. We both have our own Microsoft Accounts and have both purchased our own copies of the game with all DLC's. A couple of people have mentioned that they have used a VPN as a workaround until this problem is fixed.

I'm no expert, but when I heard of this, I went to https://whatismyipaddress.com on both of our PC's, before activating the VPN, and indeed, both of our PC's showed the same IPV4 address. It is interesting however that the site also showed our IPV6 addresses which were totally unique. I understand that the IPV6 protocol is gradually replacing IPV4 over time, as it has a vastly larger pool of IP addresses which can be assigned.

I happen to subscribe to Express VPN, and gave this a try. I logged into the VPN on my PC and routed my connection through another city.  My son continued to connect without a VPN. Voila ! It works every time.

When I checked https://whatismyipaddress.com again, my son still had our our same IPV4 address, but Express VPN assigned a unique IPV4 address to my PC.

While this works for us for the time being, people shouldn't have to subscribe to a VPN service to get around this bug. We play a number of online multiplayer games including, but not limited to WOW, GW2, FFXIV Diablo III, and other games through i.e. Steam, etc. without having to use a VPN.

Hope this info helps.

Peter Andberg - 2021-06-30 14:04

Hi Bartłomiej Słodkowski

Is there a rough estimate for the release date of 1.9.3.0?

In our household we each have our own PC with separate accounts that all have bought the game but have not been able to play together for a couple of months.

The popup about failed verification happens too often and renders the playing experience both stressful and aggravating.

[MCQA] Bartłomiej Słodkowski - 2021-06-30 14:33

Version 1.9.3.0 is already released.

Are you actually having the popup appear in the middle of missions? If yes, have you tried the solutions suggested above?

Peter Andberg - 2021-08-02 10:09

The error was present for long enough of a time that we moved away from Minecraft Dungeons for a time. We've now gotten the time to test this again for a little while and as of yet the error has not happened again. It looks like it is no longer a problem. At least for us.

Wayne Tedesko - 2021-11-16 15:24

Began seeing this error on Nov 16 2021 after update to newest launcher.  Tried original launcher with same results.  Also received the "Oh no, something went wrong, try again" message at the bottom of the new launcher window.
