I may have missed an incident, but I didn't see any explicit references to you seeing Rose in the summertime; the closest thing seems to be when she appeared at the end of camp, just when you were ready to go to school in the autumn.

If she is actually a goddess associated with winter, that makes some sense... especially since she carries oranges, a winter fruit. It's a little creepy that the word for "orange" in Slavic languages has the same root as "pomegranate", and that both fruits are associated with death and the underworld... especially the myth of how Persephone was trapped in the underworld because she ate a pomegranate.

Another odd thing is how oranges (at least, the ones we eat nowadays and the ones in your photo) aren't natural. They're hybrids, incapable of reproducing themselves; they have to be grafted onto another tree.

Tying that in with the way Rose and the other creature seem to feel that they own you and that you belong with them, that they knew of your coming years before your birth, the unnatural interest they took in your ancestors... I'm wondering if that suggests that they engineered your birth somehow and "grafted" you onto your family.

And, of course, it makes it a bit creepy that you're dating someone they may have done this with as well...

Sounds like all of this goes way beyond you. I'm beginning to think that perhaps some of the details we've been focusing on might be irrelevant. The orange, for example. I know I have looked for many days for negative information about oranges and I've found nothing. Perhaps it's not the orange that is important but the intent behind it. After you take the orange they might consider it "a debt owed" for example. And while we've ruled out demons to a large extent, demons do require your consent in some shape or form. Perhaps these people may not be demons but something similar? The universe and spiritual world is a vast place, who knows what all resides in it?

While the south is steeped in religion, you'd be surprised at how many supernatural things we encounter on a daily basis.
