Worked a treat for me today, thought I would share it with you all.

Step 1: Breathe in deeply.

Step 2: Slowly exhale all of your air and hold your breath until you are on empty.

Step 3: Pinch your nose to avoid cheating.

Step 4: Rock your head back and fourth slowly taking 2 seconds from looking at the sky to looking at the ground.

Step 5: Do it until you absolutely NEED a breath.

Step 6: Enjoy your clear nose.

Step 7: Profit!

This just made life a little easier for me.

MortWellian ยท 2856 points ยท Posted at 21:35:29 on January 8, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

From the TIL link

Depriving yourself of the oxygen tricks your brain into thinking it needs more air (which it does, I guess). So it opens up your nasal passages by lessening the blood flow. Actually the congestion is typically caused by increased blood flow to that area - that's why you can blow your nose and nothing comes out.

No shit, dude, they actually do this. Cocaine is still medically used in nose surgeries to open up the passages and minimize blood loss!!

Source: had nose surgery last year to correct a severely deviated septum. Read the surgery report and at some point they placed four cocaine soaked gauze pads in my opened-up nose.

mandelbomber ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:18:51 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

I fully believe this... I was under the impression however that it is mostly reserved for pediatric surgeries, and in many of those cases it is combined with other drugs. I forgot the reason(s) but will see if I can find a source for this. I also recall that it has accepted uses in eye surgeries as well.

Edit: here is one article about it... Discussing the pros and cons of medical use of cocaine and comparing it to other agents. It emphasizes it's unique ability to both act as a vasoconstrictor as well as an anesthetic, but isn't quite what I was looking for...I'll keep looking.

Is cocaine a safe topical agent for use during endoscopic sinus surgery? - Dwyer - 2016 - The Laryngoscope - Wiley Online Library https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/lary.25836

Edit 2: can't find the exact article I'm seeking, but this at least has an abstract about the subject and one of the compound solutions (Moffett's solution)

'Moffett's' solution: A review of the evidence and scientific basis for the topical preparation of the nose https://www.researchgate.net/publication/8188018_'Moffett's'_solution_A_review_of_the_evidence_and_scientific_basis_for_the_topical_preparation_of_the_nose

securicorscares ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 06:04:03 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Yes. During my worst days my best friend's nose was so stuffed up he was physically unable to snort a line. It would just kind of hover in the straw and then fall back out.

We knew if he could just do one line it would open back up and we could do coke all night as long as he didn't go too long without doing a line. (Pffffft!)

So one of our friends stuffed a ton of coke into a McDonald's straw and blew it into his nose for him.

It worked.

Now I can get back to fun.....do that about 5-6 times though and you are gonna end up feeling like shit with both nostrils stuffed (even if you only used one) and lacking the ability to sleep.... basically what I'm saying is yes, but back when I was using I never used with a stuffy nose and NOT have it come back 10 times worse

Festival_Vestibule ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:03:09 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Johnny_Poppyseed ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:53:26 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Not sure through what mechanism is works (interested if anyone does) but snorting opiates also clears your sinuses up somehow. Short term that is, your nose will be more fucked up and congested in the following morning .

But yeah, I've been 100% congested unable to breathe through my nose (lifetime of bad allergies and congestion), blew my nose as much as I could just to be able to breathe through it for a few seconds before it reclogs, the quickly snort some opiates. Within a few minutes I'm breathing better than ever and perfectly clear.

It's a God damn shame they are so addictive and dangerous, because opiates really are a wonder drug in so many ways.

Just pointing out that it's actually the buildup of carbon dioxide not the absence of oxygen!

wolffangz11 ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 07:03:30 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

That's what makes certain gas poisonings so easy and so dangerous. Your body's "need to breathe" function doesn't activate on an oxygen deficit, it's a buildup of CO2.

This allows gases like helium to replace the oxygen in your body without alerting the body.

You can test this by sticking your head in a dry ice freezer. You'll immediately feel like you're suffocating and it'll feel like you have been holding your breath for a while. But you can easily breathe in heaps of helium and not feel any pain, until you start to get dizzy

itsmeduhdoi ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 13:54:31 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

You reluctantly begin to sniffle snuffle the fuck outta your leaking nostrils. Make it so that the mucus gets trapped in your lungs and you'll be coughing up green gunk for days after you've already passed your cold. That's how I do it.

The oxygen deprivation from this is on par with swimming, or running hard. Your body tells you to get more air long before it starts to cause problems.

VOZ1 ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 23:55:26 on January 8, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Iโ€™m pretty sure you shouldnโ€™t beholding your breath until you pass out or something. Holding you breath for a minute or less is not going to give you brain damage. If this were risky like you claim, anyone who swims regularly would have brain damage.

smnytx ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 00:05:48 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The reason your body passes out is generally from carbon dioxide buildup, not oxygen deprivation. It's a failsafe: once you pass out, you breathe normally again. Oxygen deprivation doesn't cause brain damage until a few minutes past the length of time a healthy person can generally hold their breath.

Petrichordates ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 03:04:55 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

You're correct in that breathing is regulated by measuring CO2, but too much CO2 isn't going to make you pass out, that's absolutely false.

If you're passing out then you aren't receiving enough oxygen to your brain. Same happens from standing up too quickly with low blood pressure, it's probably not killing any brain cells.

If you're hypercapnic to the point of unconsciousness, your blood is dangerously acidic and you're approaching coma/death.

smnytx ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:42:27 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I'm interested in learning more.

The reason I made the comment I did was because a relative had pulmonary fibrosis that resulted in low blood oxygen. She needed an oxygen tank, but when she got it, and was finally getting all the oxygen she needed, she started passing out, because her lungs weren't up to the task of clearing the C02 (according to the doctor's explanation). After that, she basically needed a C-Pap to stay alive, because it both have her the oxygen she needed, and helped her lungs clear the CO2.

(Unfortunately, once she was at this point, she did not live long.)

valetas ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:12:41 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Over time the chemo receptors that controls your breathing will get used to a higher concentration of Co2 and wont regulate your breathing to compensate for the built up. When you start getting more oxygen the receptors wont react normally and can cause breathing problems and fainting spells. Even resperatory failure. Can happen to KOL patients too.

Varanite ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 03:46:21 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The urge to breathe comes from carbon dioxide buildup but if you're passing out it's almost definitely because of oxygen deprivation. The main reason it is dangerous to hyperventilate when you go swimming is because it purges all your co2 so when you go underwater you run out of oxygen before the co2 can build enough to give you an urge to breathe, and you pass out underwater without ever realizing you were running out of air.

IntoValhallaWeRide ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:28:15 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Right and most people can hold their breath for like one minute max, so basically 3 min max total

smnytx ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:43:49 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

Yes. Brain damage will start about then, and death a few minutes after that.

I once worked in special education, and remember a kid who was rescued from drowning. The estimate was he had been oxygen deprived for something like four or five minutes at age six. He had been a normal kid, but post-drowning, was extremely low functioning (he would never be able to talk, walk, feed himself, or use the toilet).

Edited spelling

How did you breathe?!? What happened?? This sounds horrific.

MortWellian ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 03:40:55 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

All I remember was waking up and felt like I was suffocating since my breathing was so shallow. After some time a nurse came since I guess I was trying to bang my hand on the guardrail, and she shot me up with something to neutralize it I think. I was very loopy so it's kind of hazy on the technical side of things, so all I remember is a drugged out slow motion panic. I've a couple of gut reactions (panics attacks?) since when I haven't been able to breath during colds etc, but those have lessened a lot since then.

Never got a solid answer as to why it happened, just that the cocktail was mixed not quite right for me, but since I had to go under again soon after they changed the mix and I was fine after that. Strangely one of the more likely reasons is because I have red hair, which has a tendency to react differently to anesthesia.

2/10 wouldn't recommend.

neurotrash ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 01:59:50 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Seems like the same concept as the tip. Breathing through a stuffed nostril deprives you of air, forcing that nostril to open up so you don't die.

vram1974 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 02:19:11 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Try a saline rinse as well. It's fantastic

CrochetCrazy ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 03:09:53 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The nasal rinse things are amazing. Not the netipot, but the one that you squeeze and it shoots the saline water into your nose quickly. It blasts everything out and it makes a big difference.

BananaNutJob ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 03:49:27 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

There's the saline spray and then the medicated decongestant spray. The medicated spray is AWFUL but it works when nothing else will. It saved me from practically having a nervous breakdown when I just needed to breathe normally. It's a last resort but sometimes that's what's necessary.

Johnny_Poppyseed ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:00:36 on January 10, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

CrochetCrazy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:34:05 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The decongestants sprays help a ton for me but I have to use them infrequently or I'm stuck using them all the time. They have a rebound if used too much. Although, the rebound is being contested all the time unless you use the spray...that's pretty much my situation anyway.

Johnny_Poppyseed ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:00:27 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I'VE RESEARCHED AND PONDERED THIS A BIT.

My recollection is hazy, but my understanding is that the lack of O2 or the increasing amount of CO2 in the bloodstream or the panic of not breathing (or perhaps a combination of these) releases adrenaline. That adrenaline causes the blood vessels in your nasal cavities to constrict, which opens up those airways. The dilated blood vessels during a cold is actually the #1 reason for a stuffy nose, and it is rarely due to mucus physically clogging up the airways.

Alternatives are to hold your breath for an uncomfortably long time. For example, hold your breath until it gets very uncomfortable, AND THEN HOLD IT FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS MORE. Well, that discomfort fucking sucks, so how can we shorten it? Do a physical activity while holding your breath. Walking down the hallway will noticeably shorten the amount of time. Climbing a flight or two of stairs is great. I've found push-ups to be very effective also.

You'll notice the relief to be temporary. Relatively soon after breathing clearly, you will notice the airways close up again. Shallow breathing after the activity is very helpful, however having just conducted a physical activity, you will crave heavier breathing to replenish your O2.

Just a guess but a release of adrenaline (epinephrin) seems like the cause, if someone is having an anaphylactic reaction they are given an epi-pen which is just a dose of epinephrine which reduces the swelling

Shootah_McGavin ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 03:52:19 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Epinephrine is what is released when your body enters a fight or flight mode. It causes alot of things to happen like increased heart rate, blood flows to your extremities and away from internal organs to prepare you to fight for or run for your life.

So when youโ€™re blasted with epinephrine your body is reacting as if youโ€™re about to fight a bear but only theres no bear so it can be a pretty scary feeling.

Im not a doc either so im sure theres alot ive missed and may not all be correct but its all researchable.

Actually adrenaline (and others catecholamine) exerts its effect through different receptors, located in different tissues. It does induce vaso constriction (narrowing of the blood vessels due to contraction of the smooth muscular cells in the vessels wall) through action on the so called alpha1 receptors on the smooth muscular cells of the blood vessels. The result is less amount of blood circulating and the reduction of the swelling. Speaking about the anaphylaxis, adrenaline activate another type of receptors, located in different tissue (beta2 receptors on smooth muscular cells of the bronchi, not the vessels this time). In this scenario, it happens the opposite : adrenaline, through beta2 receptors, induce muscular relaxation and therefor widening of the airways.

Masturbation works too.

yumyumgivemesome ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:31:44 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, it absolutely does. I think it's less the excitement of it and more the fact that we (or at least I) will often notice ourselves holding our breath during intermittent periods. I assume it's related to why some people get into asphyxiation during masturbation/sex. It somehow improves the feeling and orgasm, so many of us have started doing it without realizing what we're doing.

yumyumgivemesome ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:29:15 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I honestly think it ever so slightly distracts you from the growing discomfort of holding your breath. You really have to go at least 10 but more like at least 15 seconds past the point where you truly start to struggle to hold your breath. When you are already struggling to breathe due to congestion, these extra 15 seconds can be increasingly troubling.

The back and forth gives you something to do and helps you sort of keep a count. And perhaps the little bit of activity helps as well.

Elfere ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:50:50 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:58:51 on June 3, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Eternity is not the problem, but my ability to adapt to it. I would not mind to have a runny nose forever if I was able to adapt to it in a few seconds.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:53:45 on June 4, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

You know, nasal congestion is a function of your body that protects from infection, especially while infection so immune system can work. Trying to sabotage that function it's non sense: you body is not an external ennemy willing to annoy you, it's you. So, instead of attacking yourself, why not help that important immune function that keeps you alive and healthy?

A few hours ago I realised that I was fighting the wrong thing: instead of identifying the running nose as the problem I remembered its function so the problem were microbes trying to infect me. I took some peppermint oil and put it in my noise (a little bit, gently) as an antiseptic. Problem solved, I stopped blowing my nose each two seconds and I finally felt asleep.

So, yeah.

yumyumgivemesome ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:44:29 on June 4, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

You realize peppermint oil did not clear up your airways because it kills germs but, rather, because it has anti-inflammatory properties. That's like taking ibuprofen when you have muscle pain and inflammation. In both cases, you are telling your body that it is over-reacting to the problem.

Sorry friend, but you just told your body that it is wrong and gave it an anti-inflammatory when the body actually believes that inflammation is the way to fight your problem. You did not have germs in your fucking nasal passageway that the peppermint oil killed. That's not where your sickness is stored. GO BUY SOME MORE ESSENTIAL OILS AND GO AHEAD AND IGNORE EVERY FUCKING DOCTOR AND SCIENTIST FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE BECAUSE YOU CLEARLY KNOW MORE MEDICAL SCIENCE THAN ALL OF THEM COMBINED. Jesus fucking christ, dude.

AWildLibCuckAppears ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 04:28:37 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

You might benefit from a netti pot or some other nasal rinse. I had a wicked sinus infection and was put on antibiotics, which are not that effective for the sinuses (because of limited blood flow? idk). I ended up buying a neilmed rinse but netti pots are probably better for beginners as you can't force water into your ears.

I swear to god that what came out of me was easily three times the amount shown here:

https://youtu.be/nLLVbCMLoCc?t=63

โ€‹

Just make sure to keep your mouth open during the process and to use only previously boiled water. The saline packets are mandatory, do not do a sinus rinse without them.

If youโ€™re getting sick that often try taking 5000 units of vitamin D daily. Works wonders for the immune system!! Everyone around me is getting the flu which I had 3 times last year before I started, now I havent gotten sick at all since starting the supplement.

thepatchouligirl ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:06:17 on January 10, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

D. Yes. Sounds weird. But vitamin D is a hormone regulator, not really a vitamin. Itโ€™s needed in every part of the body, including the immune system. So frequent bouts of sickness can happen if youโ€™re deficient.

Reminds me of 4th grade. I was bored as hell and pulling my forehead down across the desk where it was lightly bouncing like a thudthudthudtbud I kept doing this for like 8-9 minutes then out of nowhere my nose ejects all the mucus in my head and covers my desk in slime. It was one of the weirdest things thats ever happened to me

The_Spare_Ace ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:54:33 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Try it again, and after you succeed, give me step by step directions.

murderedcats ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:08:35 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Step one: sitdown at wooden table. 1a: place forehead on the far end wooden table (preferably smooth)

Step two: gently pull your head towards the close end of the table where you are currently sitting while letting it gently bump as the skin frictions across the table

Step three: repeat step 1a and two unless mucus is ejected

Step four: profit????

PLEASE BE CAREFUL DOING THIS!!! My husband had a seizure trying to do this. He was really stuffed up and we saw this tip like a year ago. His airways never cleared, so when he tried to inhale after letting all his air out, he struggled to get enough air and collapsed.

USCplaya ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:43:16 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Don't even need to rock your head or anything. It's basically a survival trick your body does. If you aren't breathing and carbon dioxide is building up in your system your body opens up the nasal passages to allow more air in.

I always wondered what would happen if someone taped your mouth shut and you had a stuffy nose, turns out, your body would un stuff it for you

Pandiosity_24601 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 01:54:15 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Lasted about 30-60 seconds for me before my nose slowly recongested, if thatโ€™s a word.

mikeflipster ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:51:54 on January 8, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

That's what I want to know. Because if you just plug your nose and blow out of it for a couple seconds, it will open your nasal passages for long enough to take a nice breath, but that's all. I don't have a stuffy nose, so I can't test this new way and find out myself if it's better.

Pandiosity_24601 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:54:21 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Get a Navage - it works.

/Do a search, though. I saw and a new one for $80 and a refurb for $50 (I don't know if this is the kind of thing you want refurbed, though. I'm reminded of that video of an old guy selling a nose hair clipper on eBay)

MechaMineko ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:36:10 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Why does it need "salt pods"? Why can't I just buy my own salt (I know it's probably not table salt but surely I could just buy whatever kind of salt it is at the drug store) and refill a compartment instead of having to buy overpriced pods every month, not to mention the unnecessary packaging.

It's like they saw Keurig's business model and said, "We need in on that."

Another little hack I found is if your nose won't stop running but you can still breathe, tilt your head back as far as you can and give it a good snort, clears right up (just be careful not to choke on it as it stops at the back of your throat)

  • Place the palms of your hands over your ears so your fingers wrap around the back of your head.
  • Set your middle fingers on the top of your neck right at the base of your skull.
  • Put your index fingers on top of your middle fingers and apply pressure.
  • Now snap them on the back of your head over and over like youโ€™re drumming.
  • Repeat it about 50 times.

IOnlyUpvoteSelfPosts ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:55:44 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Chronic use of decongestant spray can cause an addiction. Iโ€™d taper off it and start using a steroid spray.

Up_the_Down_Steroid ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:32:43 on January 9, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Luckily I'm not using it chronically and have no need to taper off. My cold only lasted 3 days, I don't need it anymore. I'll look into steroid sprays though anyway, thanks.

Put finger against side of one nostril, expel air quickly through remaining open nostril. Alternate nostrils if required.

I do a similar trick to get rid of my hiccups and it works I shit you not. You breathe out completely then hold your breath with your nose plugged until you need a breath, then swallow your spit, then instead of taking a breath in you exhale whatever gas is left in your lungs till you cannot exhale any more and repeate. Just keep repeating u til you cant exhale out any more after the swallows, or if you think you're going to pass out if you keep doing it. It sounds crazy but it fucking works. I hope I explained it okay.

Holy fucking shit - I'm on a business trip in GA, and every time I come here I get sick. I did every prep I could to avoid it, but a days away from heading homeand I've got a stuffy nose.

Laying in my hotel room nursing a bottle of vodka, I came across this thread. Figured fuckit, I'm not doing anything else.

THANK YOU. I cracked the vodka because I was pissed that I still got sick despite doing everything right, and now I can breathe for a bit. I hate nasal sprays but they work, so now I don't need to use mine tomorrow. Though the customer may give me a weird look.

This technique saved me from one hell of a bad night. I had a stuffy nose so bad I genuinely could not breathe through either nostril. Guess what happens then? You can't swallow. I was drooling and gagging and starting to worry I might throw up. Googled what to do, tried this, and was so relieved when it worked. Yeah, you get stuffy agin in like 10 minutes, but the relief was so worth it.

I have kind of a similar trick for hiccups. If you are eating something spicy and you suddenly get hiccups. Try to lean back a bit, hold your breath after breathing in and put your hand on your heart and slightly press. Do that for about 5 sec and its usually gone. Not guaranteed but might work.

Wear a warm hat or a hoodie cinched up. The reason your sinuses are full of blood is to raise sinus temperature, which helps to kill the infection. If you wear a warm hat, it will raise the temperature of your head so that your brain doesn't need to have your sinuses congested to achieve the higher temperature, so your congestion will diminish enough to breathe through your nose.

Step 4 is entirely unnecessary. This technique is intended to lower the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream, which thins the blood and reduces swelling in the nasal passages. Nodding your head back and forth is entirely placebo.

For as long as I can remember, one of my nostrils are plugged at all times. the nostril that's plugged will switch sides throughout the day.

I did this trick and it helped clear my nose completely, but didn't clear up the currently plugged nostril at all.

Any reason why I've had this issue for many years? It's not like it's gunked up. It just feels like the walls of my nostril close in.

Take a little bit of peppermint oil with a towel paper and put it gently inside your nose and breathe it. Be carefull to not burn your skin. Running nose function is a very important one, without it, external agents would easily penetrate your respiratory system, killing you. You just have to help that function to reduce its discomfort ;)

Doesn't this force you to hold your breath? So, also also briefly depriving you of oxygen? I just tried it and couldn't figure out how to breathe while doing it.

*Edit: correcting autocorrect

Yes, actually...I suppose maybe I had my tongue pressed tighter to the roof of my mouth than the commenter meant. But my tongue blocked breathing through my nose.

That, or I just rub the sides of my throat an inch below my ears for a couple seconds.

Can someone do this in public and tell me if you get any strange looks?

"Yes, I slowly agree with you, why do you keep on nodding?"

At first I read "rock back and forth" and I thought this was ridiculous, but now I see slowly rock your head back and forth and I still think it is a little ridiculous.

On my stuffy days, I just take phenylephrine.

I usually just jack off.... seems to work well

Other quick ways include any sort of vigorous exercise. Do some jumping jacks. Masturbate. Whatever you're feeling more inclined to do. Either way, it will clear you right up.

Iโ€™m addicted to neosynephrine, donโ€™t ever tell me how to clear my nose again. You donโ€™t know the struggle.

Step 1: Breathe in deeply and out again through your nostrils. After Step 5 a lot of people gasp for air by breathing in through their mouth. So Step 6 should be once you absolutely need to breathe, take a deep breath in again through through your nose and out again. Then step 7, profit.

Or, blow your nose

Or just breath through your nose.

I held my breath too long and passed out. Thanks a lot, jerk!
