I don't know all of the BUDs very well. What's happening with this one anyway?
Siarles ยท 140 points ยท Posted at 20:14:02 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The two pistons next to each other beside the pumpkin are both BUDs, powered by the redstone blocks two blocks above them. The first one is triggered when the pumpkin grows, causing it to extend and break the pumpkin. This piston extending also constitutes a block update, which triggers the other BUD next to it, causing the other piston to extend. This pushes the redstone block away from the piston at the top, causing that piston to retract the redstone blocks powering the BUDs, allowing those pistons to retract, resetting the BUDs. This of course brings the redsone block back to the top piston, causing it to extend and power the BUDs again.
It would work, an issue I always have with piston|sugarcane is that it always drops on the dirt so I did a setup where the piston pushes a slimeblock into the cane. this launches it out so i have no loss but it cant be bud powered.
I will have to do some testing myself, if this is true it changes everything! (and by everything I mean not really that much but it would be a great change anyways)
Huh, I made an automated sugarcane farm back in 1.8 with just the pistons pushing out at regular intervals using a simple redstone clock. I only had the odd one land on the dirt.
I adapted the Mellon and pumpkin towers to work with sugarcane but whenever I check it I find some laying about. So i was gonna lay some mind art hoppers an push dirt on top with a piston.
Kind of similar to xisuma's cane farm toward the end of hermitcraft 3.

Great explanation, thanks! I always wondered if BUDs is coming from poor game design / poor game mechanics, and if that's the case, is this something Mojang wishes to eliminate from the game when they find a way to do it (non-destructively)?
In the start position the two pistons on the bottom layer are in a BUD state due to the redstone blocks two blocks above: they are powered but they don't realise it
When the pumpkin grows, the piston next to it gets updated and extends (breaking the pumpkin)
That piston also updates the sticky piston next to it which also extends, moving the chain of slime blocks
The last slime block in the chain pulls away the power source for the top piston, which retracts the two redstone blocks that are powering the two bottom pistons
The two bottom pistons retract, the sticky piston on the right drags back the chain of slime blocks, repowering the top piston and reinstating the BUD state of the two bottom pistons - resetting the whole machine to the start state
I thought slime was kind of binary. Either you've found a chunk that spawns slime (And you make a 16x16 room to farm the shit out of them) or you haven't, and thus don't have slime. Have things changed in the last few years regarding slime?
I suffer from low rates even when I just sit there for an hour. Been trying to site my mining base closer them now, but that's usually not possible, and it doesn't seem to help much anyway.
I know I'm doing something wrong, but can't be bothered to figure it out yet.
Slime spawn rates ever since 1.6 have been closely tied to the phase of the moon. Full moons spawn lots of slimes in swamps and slime chunks, and new moons don't have any hopping around.
Try waiting a few days and see what happens.

I love the collaborative process in Minecraft. OP has a cool idea but somebody else has a concept OP didn't consider. OP amends the original and now we have something that improves upon both designs.
/u/dizzyzane_ explains the context here. You can, of course, also use a furnace to trigger a BUD. There are lots of secret door designs where the method of opening is to add something to a nearby furnace.
Hm, this one went into an endless cycle when triggered.

Try attaching more blocks to the slime block. For some reason, when BUD-ed sticky pistons form an endless clock, you can attach more blocks to the slime block to stop the clock and the BUD will only pulse when block-updated from then on. It may depend on orientation as well like /u/mcpower_ said.

There used to be a huge family of bugs caused by the way the game engine processed block events in strict order of ascending x, z co-ordinates - called the "South-West Rule" (itself an oddity because the sun did not originally rise in the "East".)

For a redstoneless contraption, it seems to use an awful lot of redstone..
There is a bug in 1.9 where this only works in one orientation. You have probably made it the wrong way (I was lucky and picked the correct orientation before I knew there was an issue)
I did too, i was however informed by u/mcpower_ that this device is orientation dependent, and i just happened to built it in the wrong one. I tested it again with a 90 degree change and it indneed works! Thanks for correcting me!
Hey, this is pretty good, my old way had a central power line for all the budded pistons. Every time a single pumpkin was farmed they would all fire. I wonder if you could weave them together on both sides to make it more compact.
It really just means a device that has no fiddly components like Repeaters or Comparators, and no Redstone Dust wiring. That makes it a really simple build, and it is waterproof too.
It is clear from the context what OP meant by the title, it is not intentionally misleading.
Elegant design. I'm going to set up some these in my world just for the sexiness of it. Could make a bunch in some factory-type of building or set them at intervals along a path. Actually, I just cleared a long straight hallway under a mountain. They'd make a great visual highlight and serve me up a bunch of 'auto' pumpkins or melons. Too bad I'm only about ten hours into this world. It is an expensive design.

ultranoobian ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 05:27:00 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
'dustless' contraption?
DarkArchon_ ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 22:27:49 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think you are using far more slime blocks than you need here.
Try this version: (I think it should function the same) http://imgur.com/rPjpL8t

Replacing the obsidian with a furnace makes it even cheaper.
That's a beauty.

lurkinguser ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:25:48 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Copied your design, first pumpkin was pushed out but slimeblock got stuck in the air
DarkArchon_ ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:48:50 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There is a bug in 1.9 where this only works in one orientation. You have probably made it the wrong way (I was lucky and picked the correct orientation before I knew there was an issue)
darkmaster2133 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:39:11 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I'm not sure but I think the point was to not use any redstone dust. Doesn't make this wrong though.
spelaccount ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:49:35 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
This doesn't work (in 1.9 at least)
DarkArchon_ ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:09:01 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I tested it in 1.9, it works fine.
Due to a bug with pistons you can sometimes duplicate the redstone blocks, but it doesn't hurt the function of the farm
spelaccount ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:53:33 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I did too, i was however informed by u/mcpower_ that this device is orientation dependent, and i just happened to built it in the wrong one. I tested it again with a 90 degree change and it indneed works! Thanks for correcting me!

I just built it, it works. Show us a screenshot...(http://i.imgur.com/lti4YAo.png)Note: take out the blocks immediately under the slime blocks on the ground (plus one more beyond), otherwise they can't be pushed.Ignore me, I thought you were replying to OP.

Chain BUDing. Clever.
TheMetaLink ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 21:08:02 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Hey, this is pretty good, my old way had a central power line for all the budded pistons. Every time a single pumpkin was farmed they would all fire. I wonder if you could weave them together on both sides to make it more compact.
Bastil123 ยท 35 points ยท Posted at 19:25:16 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
"redstoneless" so redstone block is dirt or something?
EwokieYouTube ยท 48 points ยท Posted at 20:23:50 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think it's cause there's no wire, just blocks.
kuhnie ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 22:21:07 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's still redstone though. False advertising.
sephlington ยท 37 points ยท Posted at 23:41:56 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's why it's in "double quotes". Because it's not really redstone-less, but uses no torches or wires.
SUCK_MY_DICTIONARY ยท -12 points ยท Posted at 00:05:29 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah I think it's kind of a cheap title.
nytrons ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 23:01:53 on March 12, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think he put it in quotes to acknowledge that of course there is redstone in it, but no actual complicated wiring or anything.

That's why it's in quotation marks. Doesn't use any dust (no worry of it being destroyed by water)

It really just means a device that has no fiddly components like Repeaters or Comparators, and no Redstone Dust wiring. That makes it a really simple build, and it is waterproof too.
It is clear from the context what OP meant by the title, it is not intentionally misleading.

Won't the pumpkin sometimes not fall into the water? Rather it would just stay on the farmland?

This isn't meant to come off as rude, but if it doesn't work in the normal game, what is the point? Is it just to try and make the design work?
Silvershot335 ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 04:32:23 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's to show how effective it is rather than wait a few minutes for the pumpkins to grow.
MalHeartsNutmeg ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 04:46:23 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The design works, they just made the plants grow faster for sake of demonstration.
Ranzera ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:26:47 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It works fine in the normal game so long as the chunk is loaded. It's just slower.
Koala_eiO ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:48:55 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Exactly. It works in normal game, but it is to show that growing pumpkins are instantly destroyed.
Instead of accelerating time, OP could also place pumpkins by hand :)

BrettBusiness ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:44:48 on March 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Is every bit of that necessary? It looks a bit heavy on the resources.

I don't get it. All you're doing with stuff like this is removing YOU from the game.

less time spent farming = more time spent digging/building/whatever. not everyone can play 24 hours a day
