Front View of one of the modules
This design actually has 2 BUD switches - one is the melon pusher, and one is the melon pusher resetter.

The melon pusher resetter

These are stackable if you don't put them adjacent to each other.

Front View
As you an see, I already have some melons for collecting.

Closer view of the melon stalks
None of them are adjacent to each other.

You can possibly extend this to make a completely overkill (more overkill than this past submission) just by stacking it over and over again.

i managed to make a melon farm that's denser, more compact(in volume), stackable horizontally and vertically(
evenespecially with the waterway transport). i'll post it soon.the main problem with yours is that you need 5-6 blocks of height for each unit and this requires BUDs detectors( which makes this ineligible right off the bat for some people)

Hmm, I'd like to see it. It would be even MORE overkill! :P

yeah, i think i over did it. i do lose some slices that don't fall but i don't see how anyone would mind. count the single orange blocks each of those is a pair of plants. http://imgur.com/a/0ibL6

Could you show the stackable design that you used? Can't really see it there, but it looks quite condense.

i was referencing the video you posted in the first comment. i didn't make anything that compares to the efficiency of a BUDs version, but i don't use mods or BUDs. not that's there's anything wrong with it, it's just more than what's available by default to everyone and BUDs seems more of a glitch than a feature. i just now made a video of the one i made and submitted it, http://www.reddit.com/r/MinecraftInventions/comments/pcbhi/compact_stackable_automatic_melon_farm_video_and/ with download links.

Oh. Using my design, if you accidentally update the pusher piston, it just pulses, so it doesn't really affect growth, unless something is constantly updating it repeatedly.
Feel free to use my design on a farm, but if you do post it, please add credit to me, unless someone finds out someone who made the same design before me.

What is the point of bud switches with melon farms? If you harvest it right away and you are not present, the items will despawn. In large scale, that can be a huge loss.
๐๏ธ mcpower_ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:52:50 on February 4, 2012 ยท (Permalink)
This is for large (when I say large I mean like HUGE) melon farms where pressing a button would require lots of redstone - still, you can create a huge farm and brag about your items per hour. Also, this actually gives you more items per hour than pressing a button - if you wait until a lot of melons have grown - there is time for more melons to grow when you are waiting.
If you say it like that, wouldn't you want to stop mobs from dying until you press a button on a conventional mob trap? If they didn't and you are not present, the items will despawn.
tl;dr: use this for huge melon farms or idling, use button pushing if you are in multiplayer or if you collect your melons batches at a time AND the chunk is loaded

Ah, that makes sense. Now I get it, thanks.

Well, I know what I'm building on the server tonight.
RockyCoon ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:34:07 on February 5, 2012 ยท (Permalink)
Will this work with Pumpkins, too?
๐๏ธ mcpower_ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:06:33 on February 6, 2012 ยท (Permalink)
Yup, but the items per hour is obviously lower than melons due to melons dropping 3-7 melons (IIRC), while pumpkins just drop 1.
RockyCoon ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:19:08 on February 6, 2012 ยท (Permalink)*
Alright, awesome. (Well, yeah I'd expect that, in relation to items per hour.). Also just gives me an excuse to build it in my world until I can find Melon seeds. ;P.

BTW - melons are so OP (if you play legit). I play on a semi-survival server (ask if you want link) and I have a melon farm with approx. 75 melon stalks. I have a two-and-a-half doublechests full of them now, and it's been like a week or two since I created it.
And you know what? My melon farm is 100% non-automated- I just use stone swords all day cutting them down. (if you have a non-automated farm or want to cut down leaves, use any sword, stone preferably due to its amount, to break them faster
EDIT: shortened things down
RockyCoon ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:37:38 on February 6, 2012 ยท (Permalink)
Sure, give me the link (And what do you mean 'semi-survival'?).
and yeah, Melon farms more or less make you go 'Wheat? Bitch please.'
I understand that if you have a tree farm, and harvest it a lot, Apples more or less make you say the same thing.

noirland.minecraft.co.nz
note that it is New Zealand, and you may lag if you aren't in Oceania
EDIT: It's semi-survival because there's /home, /back, warpgates, money system, chest protection and area protection, although I don't use area protection

They do, but I find it's less of a hassle to farm jungle trees. Climb once and get on average an entire stack of wood. I've gone through so many iron axes I switched to diamond for the durability and speed bonus.
This stems from my insatiable need to bake clay and cobble for regular and stone bricks. Since the update I've baked at least one chest of brick stacks, equal to two double chests of clay

love this design...it's so compact, easy to make, and modular. I was asked by youtube.com/germanminecraftpros to make a guest appearance on their SMP LP series (I think it's going to air Monday) and they wanted me to make a melon farm for them. I made yours (gave you credit of course ;-) It's really a nice setup!
