When I was 17 I spent a winter homeless. Even as a young white female very few people were willing to help me out, there were nights I spent out in 3 degree weather because I didn't make it to the shelter on time. It was one of the hardest things I ever went though in my life. Now as an adult I do everything I can to help the homeless who want to, get out of their situation. People like you give me hope.

A few months ago, on a narrow railroad bridge near my office, a man was walking across (it was a cut-through between a secluded area that homeless stay often, and an area with a few churches and services they can use, all the other routes involve cutting through office parks) and a train came, and the man didnt have time to run to safety. He grabbed the side rail and hung on while the train passed, but slipped and fell 30 feet to the road below. He died immediately. He was obviously homeless (had very dirty clothes, a rucksack, no ID on him) and his time on earth was over. As I stood there in disbelief, I couldn't help but think that a few decades ago he was probabl someones little boy, going to school, getting tucked in at night, happy to greet each day. What happened? How did he end up alone, meeting the end of his life on the pavement? And what did that say about us as a community? No one should end up like this, in a country where we have towers of excess that the wealthy can live life in ultimate comfort, literally in their shadow here is a man dying because he was cast out and forgotten. Something needs to be done.

Thank you. I watched an older friend die on the street when I was younger. He tried to help me out so many times, as the homeless often do. He lost his whole family in a car accident and couldn't bring himself out of it and buried his pain in the bottle. Changed how I saw the world.

From San Francisco here, such a difficult problem with no singular answer. The homeless in my neighborhood have become very aggressive which leads to a negative perception of them as a whole. Most people are ignorant (both willingly and obliviously) to the fact that our cities do not (read: can't) provide adequate care to these mentally and financially distressed people. It's a perpetual black hole of poverty.

You're probably not going to see this, but reading this whole AMA has been awesome, and you seem like an authentic, excellent guy. Homelessness is a huge issue, and it impacts my profession as well. Ambulances in urban centers often get bogged down dealing with the homeless, their addiction issues, and health issues. Helping reduce the homelessness rate will go a long way towards improving everything and everyone, so thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting such a worthy cause.
