Haha the gold is more than enough. I had noticed the flag weeks ago in a chrome canary update but I was surprised that so many people had never noticed it till now.

Hopefully everyone reports the pages that are not functioning properly with the flag enabled so Chrome dev's can improve the feature. It does work flawlessly on certain websites and it would be fantastic to see it working on all of them.

Scroll jacking wouldn't exist if developers didn't use asynchronous JavaScript to resize elements after loading "extra crap" after the render completes. They coukd give the element a realistic placeholding size (banner ads have been standardized for decades) and replace the content gently , but they purposefully do this other thing instead.

v12spd ยท 57 points ยท Posted at 20:14:17 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Literally any article from theverge.com. Pages tend to jump 1-2 times before you can read the article depending on what the ad is for. It happens frequently after I'm certain the page is done loading so its really frustrating. I've given up on more than one occasion and googled the topic to read about it from another source. Here's hoping this fixes that.

CoMiGa ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 21:04:37 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I tried this on theverge.com on Chrome for Android and it still page jumps when the ad loads.

emd2013 ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 21:18:17 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

same here

xtphty ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 08:04:12 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Because ads loading is resizing or inserting elements in the webpage, which causes a natural shit down of content below the modified area. All this chrome flag does is prevent scripts from controlling the scrolling, which is sometimes abused, but mostly there for things like 'go to top' links.

MrCrashdummy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:04:15 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Why don't you like firefox?

Serious question, not mad or anything.

omegian ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:53:38 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The text editor doesn't work right on many websites (facebook) which prevents me from moving the cursor around so I can only delete the last character I entered. I don't know why they felt the need to implement their own "text edit window" control instead of use the one that comes with android?

I'm torn between using Chrome for bandwidth compression -vs- Mozilla for adblock (and general fuckyness with text input).

lukasubo ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 03:33:55 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

If you like the open web, perhaps make an effort to use Firefox. Much better to support Mozilla, who have done far more than Google for openness online. Firefox mobile isn't perfect, granted, but it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination.

lukasubo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:25:11 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's all about the UI and the background service to respond to ad server requests. Likely those are causing the bloated size.

thor79 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:38:53 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

And why do you think they are going with those big ass ads....because ad blockers...

htx1114 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 20:14:02 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

...but only people without blockers see them, and then they go install ad blockers...

thor79 ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 23:37:17 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Which makes them to resort to even worse measures. The big intrusive ads didn't exist until ad blockers came about. The less traffic they get to their ads...the more they have to resort to more intrusive ads to get the views. I would say quit stealing content but I know your type. Eventually they'll start detecting when you aren't viewing an ad and will just block the content. You don't like paywalls...then pay for the content you are stealing.

Sendbeer ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 01:28:22 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's not true, popup ads came about far before blocking ads became prevalent.

thor79 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:55:01 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They came far before ad blockers became popular..but methods to block ads have been around since ads were first brought to the web. I know because I used some of them in the early days of the web. I used ad blockers for a short time after they first became popular. I switched to just using NoScript on Firefox to block annoying content and dangerous content. I stopped using that too when I switched to using Chrome. Now if an ad bugs me I manually delete it using the built in inspector. I also pay not to see ads on some services when possible.

ihateusedusernames ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:01:52 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They're the ones putting it on the Web for us to view - how is it stealing if we go to view it?? many sites don't have a way for us to pay them, unlike NYTimes or WaPo.

thor79 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:49:28 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Their chosen revenue model is by using ads. By blocking them you are stealing content. There are actually ways with some sites where you can pay not to see the ads. They either do it themselves through their account system or through a service like Google Contributor.

ihateusedusernames ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:56:30 on June 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Sites that offer a way to pay ate the minority. Far more choose the lazy way - blast the visitor with ads that user has little control over.

Calling it stealing is absurd, on.par with claiming red light cameras in school zones are a restriction on your freedom.

If i place a postit note over part of my screen so i don't see the ad, is that stealing too? If i change the windiw size so the side banner is off-screen, is that stealing? What about muting the youtube ad? or shutting my eyes while the video plays? According to your logic these would all be stealing.

If anything those sites should be reimbursing us for the bandwidth their ads eat up - they're stealing megabytes from my data plan! Oh wait, i voluntarily chose to visit the site. i can easily avoid the 'penalty' of 'stolen bandwidth' by not clicking on their site. Just as the site producer can avoid the 'penalty' of 'stolen content' by actually charging people for it. If they're not willing to do that they should quit complaining about people using adblockers.

Tl;dr: Adblockers are nothing more than digital eyelids, get over it

thor79 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:41:02 on June 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes you can choose not to visit the site and use up both your bandwidth and their bandwidth (guess what...running a site costs money for bandwidth and other things). You choose to consume their content which they offer up and then small cost of you viewing ads. By blocking those ads, how ever you choose to do so...you are stealing that content. You have used their resources without paying for them. You haven't paid their writers or editors for their work on the content you consumed.

lukasubo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:26:47 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Responsive web design is nice.

ViperCodeGames ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:19:34 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's also a pain in the ass to get perfect on all devices and all screen sizes. Every so often I'll get a string that just happens to overflow it's container in just a narrow range of screen sizes haha. Ah well half of front end web development is some form of weird hacks and work arounds. Sometimes it's fun and rewarding to fix an issue, other times it's such a headache.

lukasubo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:22:46 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The funny thing is that even if all of the non-responsive websites just hacked together poor implementations of responsive design and they did look buggy on certain screen sizes, it would probably still be better on the whole than having a bunch of websites that only display well on very large screens.

But it would, of course, still be a huge pain in the ass to remake a whole bunch of websites, even if it wasn't done perfectly.

ViperCodeGames ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:52:53 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I redid a simple 10 page website, and it wasn't even so much of an "update" as it was a redesign. Nothing old fits, you at least have the content and images, but it's easier to start from a basic template and work your way up. Still took a good 2 months for me to do by myself (I will admit I had other concurrent responsible though). Realistically I'd say it costs about $300-$500 to redesign even a simple site. At the very minimum even with getting up a WordPress site with a generic template, and some basic pages is a fair bit of work. Work some people just don't want to pay for because "works fine on my screen. I only use my phone to text anyways" small business owners.

Nilzor ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:44:19 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

And how exactly does this flag fix that without breaking ad-presentation? Not that I care, but I assume some certain billion dollar companies does.

edit: I get it, it expands the canvas upwards for content already scrolled past. Page still dynamically grows.

Sophrosynic ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 20:54:41 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

When anything (doesn't have to be an add) causes the page to re-render, it remembers where you were looking before, and then re-scrolls you to that part after it loads.

Before scroll-lock: you are 10% down the page, now an ad loads. Afterwards, you are still 10% down, but the content you were reading is now 15% down so you feel like you jumped up.

After scroll-lock: you are 10% down the page, now an ad loads. Chrome recognizes that the content you were reading is now at 15% and scrolls you there, so it feels like you haven't moved.

Ads aren't the only thing that can cause abrupt layout changes. Loading images/elements, or anything embedded actually, can cause it.

hooliganmike ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:16:23 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Youtube on desktop is really bad for this. When you load someone's channel there's a set of links at the top of the page to the channel's videos, playlists, discussion, about, etc but once the page finishes loading they disappear. This always makes me click on the intro video when I want to click on videos/playlists.

[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 18:44:25 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Cylinsier ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:15:03 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That is so clearly the reason. From a development standpoint, it would be easy to dedicate a block of space to the ad before it loads. Instead the ad reveals by shoving itself into already used space, normally right around a high traffic link or top nav, after a brief delay. There is no way that isn't intentional and it should be outlawed by the Geneva convention.

defet_ ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:35:13 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It becomes common knowledge in web development after a certain point, but interestingly enough this is something completely overlooked by newbies, and when implementing ads into your site you usually just insert their script and you don't want to deal with it anymore.

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:36:49 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Apparently the Reddit website doesn't accept chrome:// links even with the correct link formatting. Apps might though.

Didnt work well on my n6p, the trade-off was an annoying touch delay and felt unresponsive at times.

I am not sure if I experience this when I'm on Chrome. Can anyone explain what this is and why is useful?

rodymacedo ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:10:30 on June 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You load some site.

You scroll down whilst it's still loading.

You see an interesting link, and get ready to tap on it

In a fraction of a second, some ad or image is loaded and the page scrolls back upward, and you end up clicking on something else.

This is probably the best thing to happen since the coming of Christ.

You just won a million dollar bounty posted about this the other day. Congrats! Can I borrow $20?

This happens with images, too.

I enabled it on my phone but it still jumps while loading. Is it only for desktop?

kimjongonion ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 01:18:01 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Fascinating read, it took me several re-reads to figure out the actual issue. If you "open tabs in background" you'll never even see it.

Huh. I don't really get it -- maybe I've never had this happen? Or else I'm having a hell of a time visualizing / understanding this, because I've watched both videos on the link and I don't really get it.

Does anyone have a before / after video? That might make it easier to understand what's going on with this.

EDIT: Maybe because I use AdAway and don't get any / many ads?

rodymacedo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:22:02 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You load up a website, say, Droif-Life

You scroll down whilst it's still loading the images/ads

You find a link interesting and you get ready to tap on it

In a fraction of a second, some ad/image loads and the page automatically scrolls upward, and you end up clicking on another link

While we're on the subject of Google Chrome, does anyone know how to close all the tabs that are opened when you close the Chrome app?

rodymacedo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:20:20 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

What do you mean?

Mech_BB-8 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:29:39 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

On Android, when you close the Chrome app it doesn't close all of the tabs like it used to, instead when you reopen the Chrome app all of the tabs that you were viewing are still open.

rodymacedo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:03:05 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, that's the expected behavior.

There's a "Close all tabs" option in the three-dot menu.

Mech_BB-8 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 05:18:31 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It'd be easier if I didn't have to do that every single time I closed the app, it gets really annoying after a while.

rodymacedo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:25:31 on June 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Actually, you don't need to close any app. That's the worst thing you can do to your system.

Anyway, the reason Chrome does this, is that you won't lose your tabs if Android kicks it off from RAM on it's own. And for Chrome being one of the biggest RAM hogs, it certainly will, even on 4GB ram devices.

I don't really understand why I did this but I did. You guys could get some good trolling going on if you were so inclined.
