Not just lore names, but if you're squatting on an inactive alt just to keep a name to yourself, someone can report that and you get a forced name change.
I was hoping to keep a particular name when transferring to a server to play with friends, but the name was taken. Armory showed only a 55 DK with the name. Fast forward a year and a half, I got curious and checked again. Still 55. I decided to page a GM, asking if anything could be done.
Like two hours later, I get a GM whisper to the effect that they had confirmed the player was just name squatting. They had forced a name change, but they wouldn't reserve it for me so I better hurry up if I wanted it, and they wished me luck in getting the unusual name I was after.
And that's how I got the name "Wenchy" for my main. I did a similar thing on a different server to get "Hambeast" on my pvp main.
You cant do this anymore. The new rule is the account, not character with the name, but the account it self has to be inactive for the past 2 expansions. You can no longer request a name free up, it just automatically happens after the time has passed.
I got extremely lucky, right before they made this change I requested they free up a name for me. When I transferred my very first character her name was taken, so I changed it but it always felt weird. I wanted a name change, looked up my characters old name. Someone had it but I couldn't view their character on the armory so I thought it my be inactive. I contacted Blizzard, they freed the name very quickly and I formed me to grab it ASAP because they couldn't hold it for me.
It was changed during 6.2, you can no longer request for names to be freed up even if the accounts are inactive. I was told my a GM that Blizzard plans to do name releases at the start of every new expansion, so if you want a name really bad maybe it'll be freed up for you at the start of Legion.
I don't have personal experience with this, but isn't the system implemented in a way where GMs are unable to force name changes (due to inactivity) when your subscribtion is active?
Personally, im totally name squatting on my first server with my first name despite transferring away... im also squatting my fathers name even though i definitely care more than he ever did those names on that server have been a part of my life since 2004 and i intend to keep them.

I got the impression that if the character isn't level 1, or there's otherwise some indication that you were/will be active with that character, it won't get changed. But a character that stays level 1 for years is probably not serving a real purpose. At the time I requested the names, there had been some big stink over a character who announced they had reserved a bunch of names across all servers and would only unlock them for gold
that would just be evil...
I've only got the two names I want to keep and I only want to keep them on one server. I would hope me and people like me wouldn't fall into the same vague evil category of extorting names.

Not necessarily. I had a friend get banned and a year later got his original mains name released so he could use it again. This was in MoP when names could be requested to be released.
I'm sure, with the new rules, 2 expansions after your acct was banned those names well be released for reuse as long as they didn't violate the naming policy.
There was a bug a few patches back that basically caused the game to bypass the Unusable names master-list. During that time, names like Orc, Gnome, Thrall, and other Race/Class/Lore/Inappropriate character names were aloud to be made.
They have sense fixed the glitch, however many of the characters stay as a token of awesomeness! I will forever love my Orc Warrior named Orc forever.

Hmm, are you sure it was just a few patches ago? I got the name "Elf" for a gnome on a new server when it opened up, back in ancient times of Vanilla or BC. I think names like that have always been allowed.
Even though there are RP servers, Blizzard forces some RP rules gamewide. There's no point to the rule on non-RP servers, but it's their game. They can do whatever they want.
It doesn't. I hate RP. I just play games. I only want inappropriate names banned. I want to transmog everything. I want to be an Undead Protection Paladin in a dress with a fish for a shield, but no, I have to follow the fantasy.
People bitch about players wanting solo experiences even though it's an MMO, that doesn't mean anything. The RP of the game is the lore, actually RPing is acting like you are your character. There's a difference.
I want to simply play in a world of players, I don't have to actually play with them nor do I have to act like my character.
Neither, most of the time you can't even get those names because they are banned, but there was a period of time when you could and that's when I snagged them. Not that it matters because you can't really use them.
I managed to level Usedtwat to 80 in Wrath before that got reported. Changed it to Underagedgirl and that lasted all of 4 days, followed by a very stern talking to from a GM.
That funny. I was in a guild called jail bait for a while.

I've named my shaman " Siandragosa". I've had angry raiders threaten to report the name when things didn't go their way, and even though it's a letter off the real thing I've been leading raids with an alt instead, just in case.

Not necessarily going after you, but if you know they're not allowed, why did you create them in the first place? Seems a bit counter-productive to voluntarily name a character something that breaks the ToS, then not play them for fear of being reported.
Well I don't know why you care, but I created them before I knew they were bannable. The same names aren't bannable for people who made them at the release of the game because they were grandfathered.
I feel you bro - I had three character names that were forced renamed: Middlefinger (passive aggresive), Pissed (Even though the undead voice line goes "i'm dead and i'm pissed" the GM told me it is related to drunkeness so i had to change it) and GreogeBsuh (:().

You can name it the same thing again, I had a druid named sementhrower and had to change it a couple of time, everytime I named it the same thing again

It was anything but barren. The lore all over that zone was amazing for those who read The War of the Ancients trilogy. That zone was like a love letter to those books. There's still a bunch if it around even post-Cata but the horde towns and some of the new goblin stuff got rid of some of it.
As an Alliance player it'd a tad difficult to go through that zone on my "lore strolls" like I used to. I mean it's not a huge deal, I just miss going through the old zone.

There was like less than 20 quests. Apart from that there was pretty much nothing to do unless you were grinding rep. It was a filler and dead zone, if it cheers you up you may get to visit it in legion.
It wasn't the quests. The monuments, buildings and areas were locations we read about in the books. Lots of other locations can be seen in the Broken Isles, which I'm excited about. It was the experience of walking those areas that we read about. It was just cool from a lore standpoint. I'm not talking about it being a leveling zone or what quests it had.

Well tbh Blizzard has always chosen game mechanics/design over lore. Azshara meant nothing unless you were a lore fanatic and read the books. For most people it was just a filler zone.
Same here. I still remember that one female orc that was basically threatening to "remove a certain limb" if the male orc that gave you the quest to go out to Azshara made another drunken pass at her.
I might have even taken a screen shot of it back when I had to use Quicktime to look at screen shots. Quests like that really stuck out.

I'd love to see race specific class abilities. Even if it's only one "signature" ability changed. Tauren paladin's could actually be sun walkers, or you could have blood nights. Voodoo priests, etc. That and race specific architecture in new world based. Typically you only see human and orc themed buildings. Would have loved a thunder bluff style garrison, etc

Balance nightmare- will not happen again. At the absolute most, it might be possible to change spell effects so that each race brings different aesthetic value to each class.
Race specific class abilities used to exist on a limited basis, but it proved to be a balance nightmare and got phased out. Cosmetic only changes would be neat though.

Wrathgate, Broken shore, SoO, Legion invasion, Scourge invasion, Dragon soul, the entirety of WoD.. No they never include any important lore in game.
Whilst it is somewhat annoying when it is out of game, it's not like they do it with every single story. Besides, what do you want? A cutscene? It's not like they are gonna have an even when 10,000 alliance players sit next Magni and watch him hatch. I don't see the problem with this, it's not like they went 'Oh Magni is awake now btw', they made an awesome comic to show you it

Also Wrathgate has been completely removed from the game. Bad example. There's literally no explanation for who Bolvar is anymore.

I guess thats your opinion, one I don't agree with. Plenty of games make changes to the story and just go 'yes this happened', blizzard actually show you this. If you think that reading a 10 page comic is too much and not good enough, then that is your opinion.
As for Wrathgate, you can do everything apart from the Undercity. I did it a couple of months ago when I quested through there.
And if you really want to get in to the no explanation for Bolvar, well there is literally no explanation for Magni unless you played pre-cata. He is just some dwarf king stuck as a diamond. Bolvar is just some Alliance character who is now the Lich King, if you haven't played Wrath/pre-wrath.
Sort of, though some of the tier sets just dont do the class justice and create flavor, its more of a: you're a mage? heres fire on your clothes: type of thing.
There are a lot of faction/race themed transmogs, very few people actually use it for transmog because it looks outdated/ugly/unimpressive compared to many other sets
I was really hoping they'd add some race-based transmogs to artifacts, at least for race-limited classes like druids and paladins. I'm a little disappointed they didn't do that.

Dangit, I'm so jealous, I've been going for this transmog for weeks.. Did you use Grimscale armour? If so, did you buy it or farm it?
I'm poor and have been trying to farm it on the Hellfire Peninsula's Infernal Warbringers, with no luck.. I'm also a noob though, so I might just be doing it wrong
Pretty sure the name dwarf is supposed to be unavailable but there was a bug during wod that made it possible to pick unavailable names. I think the bug came with 6.1 or 6.2 and it got fixed after a few days. Blizz said that they wont force namechange for nonoffensive names.

Someone reported my hunter named Lesbow. Had her through multiple expansions. Received a two hour ban and a forced name change just for the name. She's now named Bowisha.
Someone reported my hunter, Supertramp. I disputed, with an extensive explanation to the meaning to no bulge. Yet Swastikafan, Swastikalover, Swastika, Despingue, etc. are all around.
I snagged the name "Jafar" on one of the most populated EU servers there is, talked to a GM back in 2014, and he released the name, and I was fast to nab it.

Personally, im totally name squatting on my first server with my first name despite transferring away... im also squatting my fathers name even though i definitely care more than he ever did those names on that server have been a part of my life since 2004 and i intend to keep them.

I got the impression that if the character isn't level 1, or there's otherwise some indication that you were/will be active with that character, it won't get changed. But a character that stays level 1 for years is probably not serving a real purpose. At the time I requested the names, there had been some big stink over a character who announced they had reserved a bunch of names across all servers and would only unlock them for gold

Not necessarily. I had a friend get banned and a year later got his original mains name released so he could use it again. This was in MoP when names could be requested to be released.
I'm sure, with the new rules, 2 expansions after your acct was banned those names well be released for reuse as long as they didn't violate the naming policy.

There was a bug a few patches back that basically caused the game to bypass the Unusable names master-list. During that time, names like Orc, Gnome, Thrall, and other Race/Class/Lore/Inappropriate character names were aloud to be made.
They have sense fixed the glitch, however many of the characters stay as a token of awesomeness! I will forever love my Orc Warrior named Orc forever.

It was anything but barren. The lore all over that zone was amazing for those who read The War of the Ancients trilogy. That zone was like a love letter to those books. There's still a bunch if it around even post-Cata but the horde towns and some of the new goblin stuff got rid of some of it.
As an Alliance player it'd a tad difficult to go through that zone on my "lore strolls" like I used to. I mean it's not a huge deal, I just miss going through the old zone.

There was like less than 20 quests. Apart from that there was pretty much nothing to do unless you were grinding rep. It was a filler and dead zone, if it cheers you up you may get to visit it in legion.

It wasn't the quests. The monuments, buildings and areas were locations we read about in the books. Lots of other locations can be seen in the Broken Isles, which I'm excited about. It was the experience of walking those areas that we read about. It was just cool from a lore standpoint. I'm not talking about it being a leveling zone or what quests it had.

Same here. I still remember that one female orc that was basically threatening to "remove a certain limb" if the male orc that gave you the quest to go out to Azshara made another drunken pass at her.
I might have even taken a screen shot of it back when I had to use Quicktime to look at screen shots. Quests like that really stuck out.

I'd love to see race specific class abilities. Even if it's only one "signature" ability changed. Tauren paladin's could actually be sun walkers, or you could have blood nights. Voodoo priests, etc. That and race specific architecture in new world based. Typically you only see human and orc themed buildings. Would have loved a thunder bluff style garrison, etc

Wrathgate, Broken shore, SoO, Legion invasion, Scourge invasion, Dragon soul, the entirety of WoD.. No they never include any important lore in game.
Whilst it is somewhat annoying when it is out of game, it's not like they do it with every single story. Besides, what do you want? A cutscene? It's not like they are gonna have an even when 10,000 alliance players sit next Magni and watch him hatch. I don't see the problem with this, it's not like they went 'Oh Magni is awake now btw', they made an awesome comic to show you it

If I have to go out of my way, outside of the game, to find out what the fuck is going on, then yeah, that's exactly what they did.
Also Wrathgate has been completely removed from the game. Bad example. There's literally no explanation for who Bolvar is anymore.

I guess thats your opinion, one I don't agree with. Plenty of games make changes to the story and just go 'yes this happened', blizzard actually show you this. If you think that reading a 10 page comic is too much and not good enough, then that is your opinion.
As for Wrathgate, you can do everything apart from the Undercity. I did it a couple of months ago when I quested through there.
And if you really want to get in to the no explanation for Bolvar, well there is literally no explanation for Magni unless you played pre-cata. He is just some dwarf king stuck as a diamond. Bolvar is just some Alliance character who is now the Lich King, if you haven't played Wrath/pre-wrath.

Pretty sure the name dwarf is supposed to be unavailable but there was a bug during wod that made it possible to pick unavailable names. I think the bug came with 6.1 or 6.2 and it got fixed after a few days. Blizz said that they wont force namechange for nonoffensive names.
