WOW.

I don't know the specifics of what this ... is, or does, but the final product looks like a computer has applied artistic styles to supplied images in a way that is remarkably artistic. I've never seen a machine produce such compelling (looking) art. I'm floored.

It's actually exactly what it's trying to do doing.

It's basically using machine learning to "learn" an art style, and apply it on another image. Here are the examples the paper gives, which I think show it much better: http://i.imgur.com/w4r7aPn.jpg

Machine learning is really blowing up right now, especially with GPUs being so powerful. They're slowly creeping up all over the place. It's quite fascinating really all these new and creative uses people find for it.

If you're really interested in this topic I can only recommend reading Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom. It's extremely detailed and deals with basically everything related to the "robotic revolution", if you want to call it that.

I can't summarize the whole contents of the book in one short paragraph, but regarding our future there's exactly two general paths after superintelligence (something "vastly superior to a human mind in all regards") is created according to Bostrom. Either we manage to control superintelligence or not. In case we don't we're done as a species. If we do, it'll lead to very different outcomes depending on who controls the superintelligent mind. Might be the best thing to ever happen to humanity, might also put a tyrant in power forever. In short, extremely high stakes with extremely high yields but potentially even bigger losses.

It's still probably the best bet. At least within our lifetimes, this sort of thing will probably remain a tool used by artists. The creative ideas will probably still be coming from humans.

Think of it as just a really advanced photoshop filter. It might mean fewer "intern" level positions, but someone still has to decide which processes to run.

That "someone" might be an algorithm, implementing a marketing campaign. The idea that technology will be used only by humans is a fallacy. Technology will mostly be used by other technology and there is nothing mystical about art. It boils down to calculations, patterns, prediction, just like everything else.

I never said anything of the kind. Humans might eventually live in a society where the entire workforce is made of computers and robots, and every human on earth lives off of a welfare check.

But when you're talking about what career to choose, you really only need to focus on the next 40 years or so. And in that time span it's extraordinarily unlikely that AI which can out-compete humans creatively (and economically) will have been around long enough to be adopted by all artistic industries.

Almost.

The way a ray tracer works is by shooting a "ray" through a pixel from your "eye" position, and by simulating the ray against the objects in the scene and the lights, it gets a "color" for that ray direction. Do note that the ray has a lot of probabilistic aspects to it, so shooting a ray in the exact same direction may not give you the same result. Furthermore, a pixel, while small, can still have infinitely many different rays sent through it. This image sort of shows the idea: https://codelab.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/pixelarea.jpg

Then, it shoots many many more rays until it can get a smooth image. In that paper, the "ground truth" image that looks perfect had 32000 rays per pixel. A 1920x1080 image has 2 million pixels, so that's 66 billion rays.

Now, the smarter thing to do is to selectively send more rays in some places (more details and less in others (more flat). Also, how to use "combine" color values from many rays into the pixel's color.

So while at the end, it looks like simple "noise" reduction, it's important to know what the underlying process is. You're basically "learning" to predict how these colors vary and change over ray traced images, so when you see similar pattern of samples in the future, you can predict the color better.

But warning it's nothing simple and straight forward that anyone can setup and run. It most likely requires a Unix system and a powerful Nvidia gpu. Machine learning is very intensive.

The people who wrote neural-style based on that paper did a reproduction of that image here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jcjohnson/neural-style/master/examples/outputs/tubingen_scream.png

but it's still not high definition.

I also tried extracting the image from the PDF but it's also just as small. To be honest, these neural networks are extremely slow to process, and chances are, the authors probably didn't generate bigger images than that either, as it takes a lot of time.

Interesting enough a convolutional neural net mimics the layered column structure of your visual cortex. It makes them very well suited at either finding complex patterns in images or producing images from learned patterns. It's kinda like simulating a very specific imagination. If youre familiar with Google's deep dream project, this is using the same tech in a different way.

Thanks for doing this. Even if it doesn't work out, I appreciate you putting the effort forth. I suspect the popularity of a program/website like this would absolutely explode in no time. Monetize your page or accept donations, as others have suggested, to make it worth your time.

Actually I don't know if there would be legal issues with monetizing someone else's source code. Regardless, there's plenty of people willing to donate.

i've finished already, the problem is that most dedi servers out there are cpu based, this is a cuda gpu based software, so the only solutions are extremely pricy (few hundred per month), so, won't be able to put it online for the masses ...

The time difference, to give you an example is that for 1 image with CPU i can do around 50 with gpu.

So, yeah ... :(

Third update, backend works, we have liftoff.

Machine is not powerful enough to process lots of images, its a 'mere' VPS.

I'll see about getting a dedicated machine online soon, for now, i'll use this one to keep doing installs and try out the front-end part.

in the top comment there's a source code, download & compile. having ubuntu 14 lts greatly helps you, you can however make it work with osx. don't think so with windows or other distributions ...

I'm using a Python based one with CUDA, so my settings are pretty different. One similar setting, though, is I use imagenet-vgg-verydeep-19 as my model_file found here.

I'm surprised you're able to even go through these images using just a CPU, it would take weeks instead of minutes if I used my CPU instead of my GPU.

I get that sometimes, but then I resize the images to be 800x600 or smaller and it tends to work. Not sure if the same would work for you. Couldn't tell if -gpu 0 was gpu off or telling it to use the first gpu.

My params are like... --style-weights [(0, 1), (2, 1), (4, 1), (8, 1), (12, 1)] --iterations 500 --smoothness 5e-08 --subject-weights [(9, 1)] --subject-ratio 0.02

That's why I look at yours and I say "they're...different".

I wouldn't say it's impossible, but it sounds difficult to do. I compiled everything in Ubuntu, and that was a pain in the ass.

I think the best bet for most is to have an app or something so everyone can do it. The app would take your picture and style you want, and send it off to the server to process it. It would most likely cost money, because a server that can do this isn't cheap. It's like $2500 just for a graphics card that looks capable of handling this pretty well.

I didn't put up a public web interface, don't plan to since its gonna be crashing anyway, 60-70 minutes for a 600px image is just too much for most people to bear.

If it even gets a little bit of traction from here, it would have workload for the next year so its all pretty pointless.

As a personal project i could probably put it into the Microserver i've got at home, but i would still need to find a card and everything, so not the fastest solution.

If you want, depending on your OS, i could help you set up your own system.

People seem to think deepdream produces some amazing art or something but I honestly think it kind of sucks. It's basically whatever picture you gave it, plus a shitload of colors, eyes, and dogs. That's literally the description of every single deepdream image I have ever seen.

Edit: After having looked at the subreddit after a long time, it looks like it's evolved a lot, although it seems like it's using other kinds of software now too, not just the original DeepDream. Probably makes a big difference. The original one was initially interesting but basically did the same thing with every picture. Eyes and dogs. Eyes and dogs everywhere.

A lot of people just ran it with the default settings - including people who quickly put up apps to let others do it. I thought it was a lot more interesting to fiddle with the configuration to get different results out of it.

If I recall, the defaults from the initial release tried to find patterns on a smaller level. Not small enough that it would just distort the texture of images, but enough that it would find things like eyes or dogs that were common patterns in photos, but generally weren't the largest things in photos.

So I'd try to do things like focus on lower layers (which kind of gives textural effects, like an unguided version of the deepstyle images) or focusing on higher layers (which would kind of try to reshape the main focus of the image into something else). Leaving it on the default settings was pretty much always cruise-control for dog-slugs though.

In short, you need NVidia GPU with 2Gigs or more, not older than 2 years. The more memory and CUDA cores you have the better. Those things are usually trained on Kepler/Tesla/... server GPUs.

I'm not really sure, sorry. The problem is that different Neural Network libraries require different technology support. Main issue is the Cuda Compute Capability, the modern libraries usually need 3.5 and higher.

This is very impressive! The Pablo Picasso self portrait in shows that there are still some areas of improvement. It applies the textures excellently but a lot of the character of that picture comes from the long, angular strokes, which it sort of fails to take into account in a meaningful way in the resulting picture.

guide to install it. I tried using github and it's missing a lot of dependency steps.

I got it installed if anyone is curious. I got stuck on the caffe app. Had to manually point to ~/torch/something/bin to run the luarocks binary.

also had to install zeromq, I think I used version 3 i.e.

apt-get install libzmq3-dev

I think you missed the point. It doesn't combine two images, it takes the artistic style from one image and applies it to the other. If you start with an image with no artistic style to learn, you're not going to get good results.
