You can't. Once a man contracts colorblindness there is no fixing it. Just get yourself a color-seeing dog and hopefully you'll be able to live some semblance of a normal life.
What the fuck had happened? Maybe it had started when she was a kid. As she used to tell carefully worded jokes, jokes she had written out on her Lisa Frank notebook, she was always laughed down when she tried to tell them. The jokes involved too much setup. The kids had no patience to wait for the punchline and before she was done, the familiar chant of "oh you're silly" began to work its way around the room. By the time she was done, the chants were too loud to hear her joke. She hadn't handled it well and the bitterness sat like a rock in her stomach.
But today, u/ohyouresilly had a breakthrough with her dog. She had learned how to communicate with "Thumper," her German shepherd, through a complicated combination of tail wags and head cocking over the lonely years after the kids had chased her off the playground, and she was finally able to ask Thumper what he saw. His rump wiggled, his eyes got bright, and as they sat there on that cold January day he alternately cocked his head and wagged his tail, spelling out a story of a world filled with vivid shades of grey. Not unlike the books of a sexual nature, u/ohyouresilly and Thumper retired to bed to spend some time romping and frolicking through the mass of pillows and blankets strewn across her bed.
But the looming demon in the back of her mind remained. It wasn't until that Monday had drawn to a close that u/ohyouresilly finally realized what was bothering her. It was the rampant colorblindness that was spreading among males at an alarming rate. After her conversation with Thumper, she couldn't imagine how to fix it. It wasn't until u/ohyouresilly signed into Reddit that a realization struck her in such vivid detail that she was unable to contain it. As she furiously typed, she hoped that nobody would laugh at her as they used to in school...
In heterozygote females with colour defect genes on the X-chromosome, even if approximately half of their photoreceptors are dysfunctional they usually have enough functional cone photoreceptors to have normal colour vision.
This is because x-inactivation happens late enough in differentiation that any particular organ is extremely unlikely to be composed entirely of cells expressing the same chromosome.
Given how rare colourblindness is already (I think around 5% of the pop.), the odds of the girl being a heterozygote and having both eyes randomly shutting down the dominant X chromosome is extremely low compared to the father simply being colourblind and the mother being a carrier.
Also, Barr bodies are far from the only means humans have of reducing the activity on X chromosomes. Furthermore, where are you getting heterochromia being caused by Barr bodies from? Are you perhaps mistaking it for heterochromatin?
You are correct, though, about calico cats. The patches of orange/ginger fur are caused by an inactivation of the dominant X.

It's a joke, I think, about the politician that said "theres a way for the body to shut that down", about pregnancy rape
But he could have Kleinfelters syndrome (XXY) - MAYBE. I don't think so though, because I think that results from a replication of the X chromosome from the mother. Also, I think Kleinfelters men are sterile.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:45:21 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
If she's a "superwoman" (XXX trisomy on chromosome pair 23), the dominant trait should still win out as far as I remember. 2 recessive genes should still be overpowered by a dominant 3rd gene in a trisomy (I think).
I suppose she could have Turner Syndrome (monosamy with single recessive X chromosome from her mother with no sex chromosome from her father) though.
So if she has Turner's Syndrome and her mother is a normal-vision carrier of color blindness there's a 1/3 chance of her being color blind.
So combined with all the other variables your looking at about a 1:100,000 odds of it being his child. Very unlikely, but not mathematically impossible.
Probably good enough reason for a paternity test, though.
That's right. Anyway, I figured that if the girl has Turner's Syndrome (monosamy X) it would be possible for her to get the recessive gene from her mother.

Wait but if you're a woman can't you only be colorblind if both parents are colorblind? So if the daughter is colorblind wouldn't the father already have to be colorblind in the first place? It's like, reverse-contagious.
Edit: Also, if it's a recessive X-linked trait then I'm pretty sure you could have an unaffected carrier mother.
so0ks ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:51:03 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
The father must be colorblind for a duaghter to be. It's an x-linked trait. Since women have two x chromosomes, the father must have the colorblind gene, and the mother must also be colorblind or a carrier (only one of her x chromosomes has the gene).
I'm female and colorblind, so is my dad and one of my brothers. My other brother and my sister are not. So Mutti's a carrier (has the gene but isn't colorblind), and I got shit luck.
This is true for red/green color blindness due to it's link to the sex chromosomes, but not for all types (such as blue color blindness).
Xiaxs ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:56:11 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
In actuality, the father was colour blind all his life and passed it to his daughter with black magic. Only catch is he can't touch her or he gets it back.
Here is a link for ya, buddy. In case that's too much reading for you, here's the paragraph you're looking for:
A colour blind daughter therefore must have a father who is colour blind and a mother who is a carrier (who has also passed the faulty โgeneโ to her daughter). If her father is not colour blind, a โcarrierโ daughter wonโt be colour blind. A daughter can become a carrier in one of two ways โ she can acquire the โgeneโ from a carrier mother or from a colour blind father.
Isn't the reason it's more common in men because it's a recessive gene on the X chromosome and men don't have a second one to balance it out? I can't see how that would be influenced by natural selection, since color blind men produce carrier daughters.
As to the second part,.. it's really anyone's guess. Natural selection really only culls things that keep an organism from reaching reproductive age and making a baby. There isn't nearly as much rhyme and reason as people think there is to evolution.
[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 01:22:01 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Natural selection really only culls things that keep an organism from reaching reproductive age and making a baby.
Then explain how I have ginger hair. Checkmate, atheists.
Instead of asking someone who is colorblind what this color looks like to them, imagine a red cloth. Imagine the cloth is candy apple red and you leave it sitting beneath your windshield on your dashboard in your car for a week in July. Then you examine the cloth afterwardsNow the cloth is still red but at a distance, could be mistaken for a pink or something similar. And when placed next to a cloth of the original red, the contrast becomes apparent which one is actually red.
A common misconception is that colorblind people just see everything in gray scale. That is possible, but it's one of the rarest types of colorblindness. Usually, colorblindness is just that certain colors appear much duller than they really are.
I always have wondered what it would look like looking through other peoples eyes. Like how does a field of wildflowers look to each of us? Is their a sort of default that we all mostly see the same thing? Or do we all have slightly varying degrees of how it looks?

What's worse is that your brain can make mistakes. Your brain can also inject things into your perception of reality that aren't actually there. But because your entire experience of this universe is based on your brain's subjecting interpretation of things, you might never know that something wasn't as you thought it was.
I recently read that there is also up to a 30% difference in how people experience smells in addition to seeing color differently (even among those people who aren't colorblind). So not only would everyone see that field of flowers differently, the flowers would smell different for each person too!
this page & this page are the best articles I've seen describing what different types of color blindness looks like
Synexis ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:22:33 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This might interest you: search for "colorblindness simulators". There are several webpages and apps that let you do various things like view an image or even your entire device approximately as it would be seen with various types of colorblindness.
Open mspaint and make a large image that is all read. Close one eye and stare at the red with the other. This will saturate the color receptors in one eye a little more than the other. Then look at the world switching from one eye to the other. The eye that you didnt look at red with will now detect everything as slightly redder than the other eye. Works even better if you have one of those red and blue 3d classes.
Screw that*, I think it's more interesting to experience people's brain chemistry. That is, see what people without depression are like. Try out an energetic/motivated person's brain. A smart one's. A dumb one's. A friendly person's. An aggressive one's. An so on.
Edit: *not intended to be rude; I just meant "that's nice, but consider this higher reaching idea!"
I know it's one of those theoretically wild things to think about. And is kind of along the lines of what if we're all just a computer simulation. But the reality probably is that the colors everyone sees are at least nearly the same.
I can see color, I don't see in shades of gray like the gif. Some people with severe color blindness don't see colors, but most people see colors, just have trouble telling some shades of the color wheel that are next to each other apart. Like for me light green and yellow, can't tell them apart even when they're like right next to each other unless it's a big blotch of the color
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:53:09 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Most people who are colorblind can still see in color, just not as well....
No. What does infra red or ultraviolet look like? You can make educated guesses, but that's about it. It's the same for someone who's partially or fully colorblind. I'm red green colorblind. I have no idea what purple or pink look like. I get what blue looks like. I get what yellow looks like. I see a bastardized version of red and green, though. I can try and make some sort of educated guess but the reality is I've got no idea.
Your reddit username is only one character off from an older AIM screen name I had in the early 2000s. Heh.
Anyway, thanks for thinking of that, but I've tried those glasses. They only work for certain types of colorblind-ness. Normal people have 3 types of color sensing cells (trichromats). Colorblind-ness is generally genetic. Red Green colorblind-ness (what most people have) can express two ways. Some people have one type of cell that's messed up and don't respond to the correct frequencies (anomalous trichromats). The glasses work really well for these people. They block frequencies of light that stimulate multiple receptors and books frequencies that only stimulate the messed up ones. With the glasses your vision improves a lot. Some other people just don't have the third type of cells at all (dichromats). Since the cells are missing, the glasses can't really do anything. I'm a dichromat.
On the bright side, you're not missing out on much. I have begun having more trouble seeing some colors (in particular, on Wikipedia, blue click able links and black text look almost the same to me), and I'm "meh" about it.
Sorta. I have glasses that correct the two colors I have the most trouble with. It's like when you look through a fence, your mind fills in the parts you don't see. It's been pretty fun having these things. Road signs that are orange and yellow really stick out now.
10/10 would recommend being colorblind your whole life then getting magic glasses that fix it.
Apparently I would be considered colorblind (at least according to those "find the number in these splotches of color" tests) but all I really notice is that yellow and light green can be kind of hard to tell apart next to each other. I've been told I wouldn't be allowed to become a pilot due to this but in my daily life it has only made Puzzle Quest on the DS needlessly difficult.
Perhaps this is a robot account, reposting comments and articles in tandem with other robot accounts. Notice how they didn't keep up the banter. I am sure someone has time to investigate this.

Holy fuck this is such a quality post. This is what this sub is all about.
Colorblindness is a recessive sex-linked trait, which means that in order for a girl to be colorblind, she needs to receive the gene from both the sperm and the egg, which means the father has to be colorblind and the mother has to at least be a carrier of the gene (could be either homozygous, which would be a colorblind mother, or possibly heterozygous, which would be a non-colorblind mother).
Either way, if this girl is colorblind, but Steve is not, that can't be his [biological] child.
Raythe ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:37:59 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
If his daughter is colorblind then he would have to be colorblind himself. Colorblindness is carried on the X chromosome. For a woman to be colorblind she would have to have two X chromosomes that carry the gene. One of those would have had to come from her father who would also be colorblind since he would carry the colorblind gene on his X chromosome. Science.
If his daughter is colorblind, he HAS to be. It's a sex-linked recessive gene tied to the X Chromosome. If he isn't colorblind and she is, that ain't his daughter.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:10:38 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Although, if it is recessive, he could be heterozygous for the gene and not have the disease.
If he's heterozygous on the X chromosome he's a she (possible exception with Kleinfelters trisomy, but then he'd be sterile).
It affects men almost exclusively because it's a rare recessive trait, but Mendelian recessive traits on the X chromosome are effectively dominant trait on men because they don't have another X chromosome with the dominant gene. Men have a Y chromosome instead, which has entirely different genes.
Wait, if his daughter is colourblind, that means both her mom and dad has the same kind of colour blindness as its a recessive trait almost unheard of in women as colour blindness is a mutation on the X chromosome.
Wait, why am I thinking this much into it?

I guess it was so rare when I was growing up it was assumed to be a male only ailment. I've not given it much thought since then. I only knew one friend that had it - male.
It's an x-linked recessive trait. Women can have it but they have to have the trait on both X chromosomes while men just have to have it on the one, making it much less common for women.

u/ohyouresilly was having a rough day.

I'll just answer that with a StackOverflow link:
http://biology.stackexchange.com/questions/41447/colorblindness-in-females-and-random-x-chromosome-inactivation
This is because x-inactivation happens late enough in differentiation that any particular organ is extremely unlikely to be composed entirely of cells expressing the same chromosome.
notyou-ITSME ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 04:41:34 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
It was a joke.

Still wouldn't do it.
But he could have Kleinfelters syndrome (XXY) - MAYBE. I don't think so though, because I think that results from a replication of the X chromosome from the mother. Also, I think Kleinfelters men are sterile.

CanadaHaz ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:42:50 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Often, but not always.
chiliedogg ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:55:29 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
That's right. Anyway, I figured that if the girl has Turner's Syndrome (monosamy X) it would be possible for her to get the recessive gene from her mother.

Wait but if you're a woman can't you only be colorblind if both parents are colorblind? So if the daughter is colorblind wouldn't the father already have to be colorblind in the first place? It's like, reverse-contagious.
weirdbiointerests ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 00:57:09 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
I believe the word is "heritable."

Isn't the reason it's more common in men because it's a recessive gene on the X chromosome and men don't have a second one to balance it out? I can't see how that would be influenced by natural selection, since color blind men produce carrier daughters.
CurlTheFruitBat ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:35:29 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
To answer your question - yes.
As to the second part,.. it's really anyone's guess. Natural selection really only culls things that keep an organism from reaching reproductive age and making a baby. There isn't nearly as much rhyme and reason as people think there is to evolution.

What's worse is that your brain can make mistakes. Your brain can also inject things into your perception of reality that aren't actually there. But because your entire experience of this universe is based on your brain's subjecting interpretation of things, you might never know that something wasn't as you thought it was.

My two eyes see color slightly differently, and have different focal lengths and strengths. So... I kinda can, just by closing one or the other eye.
JonnyLatte ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:37:52 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Open mspaint and make a large image that is all read. Close one eye and stare at the red with the other. This will saturate the color receptors in one eye a little more than the other. Then look at the world switching from one eye to the other. The eye that you didnt look at red with will now detect everything as slightly redder than the other eye. Works even better if you have one of those red and blue 3d classes.

DurasVircondelet ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:56:09 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Science.

Because red green color blindness is associated with X chromosome, for someone born XX and color blind, their father would have to be colorblind as well
veetack ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:18:22 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
So stupid tidbit here: color blindness is a sex linked trait. If a girl is color blind, then both the biological parents have to be as well.
Tl;dr

Red green colorblind here. I failed my first homework assignment in kindergarten for coloring the ocean purple because it looked the same to me. Christmas colors are agony to look at.

who the fuck randomly picks up their ten year old daughter while they are casually drawing?
captainburnz ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:41:20 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This scenario is impossible. Colorblindness is a recessive trait passed down on the X chromosome, of which men have 1 and women have 2.
In order to have a colourblind daughter, Steve himself would have to be colourblind.
A more logical course of events would be his daughter playing doctor and giving Steve autism with an inoculation.

She's a carrier, but when he tried to carry her she infected him.
njj3400 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:45:03 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Women can have color blindness if they're the daughter of a colorblind male and a carrier. Even then that's only a half chance.
Clutterz ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:08:31 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
I did not know that. I was led to believe it was a male only condition. Thank you
njj3400 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:11:25 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Its rare enough (relatively, anyway) that effectively, colour blindness is only experienced by males.

Colour (color) blindness (colour vision deficiency, or CVD) affects approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women in the world.
Clutterz ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:45:59 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
I guess it was so rare when I was growing up it was assumed to be a male only ailment. I've not given it much thought since then. I only knew one friend that had it - male.
pandahunter90 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:03:36 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
It's an x-linked recessive trait. Women can have it but they have to have the trait on both X chromosomes while men just have to have it on the one, making it much less common for women.
AllOverThePlac3 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 11:53:21 on January 24, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
