Apparently, the electrocution of Topsy had nothing to do with attempting to prove the hazards of AC current.
The inventor had been involved with the electrocution of animals 15 years earlier during the War of Currents, trying to demonstrate the dangers of alternating current, but the events surrounding Topsy took place 10 years after the end of the "War". At the time of Topsy's death, Edison was no longer involved in the electric lighting business.

Whenever I end up talking to some chemophobe nut, I bring up the fact that Dihydrogen Monoxide is a chemical, and that overdosing on it can be fatal. You wouldn't believe the number of people I've met who want to ban water...
It's clogging up American rivers and lakes! It's found in tumors! Heavy exposure can kill you in 30 seconds!
My chemistry teacher gave us a thing like that in high school and we all had to vote if we wanted to ban it or not. I wish I could say I was a smart teenager.
Mine did too, it was one of the only things I remember from that chemistry class!
It was in the middle of the unit where we learn how molecules are named, so pretty much everyone got the joke right away. The ones who didn't never heard the end of it.
I think we should do these people a favour and remove all chemicals from their immediate vicinity. I think just a metre-thick chemical-free buffer around them should be enough to silence their complaints.

On a scale of Three Mile Island to Chernobyl how crispy would you be?
How are they reusable? Are there multiple discs within it?
[deleted] ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 03:02:24 on June 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
You boil it and somehow the chemistry involved melts the liquid and stores the energy. The disc just pops back into place when you're done. It's kinda like a Snapple cap.
It is a sodium acetate supersaturate solution. When snap the disk, flick it,drop it, or otherwise disturb the mixture, the sodium acetate nucleates and crystallizes, which heats the solution. To reuse it, you microwave the solution, heating it and allowing the sodium acetate to dissolve once more
Boil it, the plastic used is commonly used in medical products and is very very bad if you nuke it. Think boiling plastic on the skin or throughout your microwave
Never microwave! Boil, preferably wrapped in a towel. :) I have hand warmer sized ones, and while the heat doesn't really last that long, they are pretty nifty.

I laughed at my buddy when he bought this thing. It looked like a scam, but the heat in these things stays for over an hour. It beat the shit out of my seed-filled microwave bag thinger.

I used to have hand warmers to put in my jacket pocket that were like these but they only worked once despite following the directions to reset them.
They were acting like that warning was "Do not use this product at all" but they leave off the "While sleeping" bit. They never touch on if you can use their product while sleeping (Which I suspect is still a no)
Thank you. I understand now. I've slept less than twenty hours in the last week, so I figured I wasn't understanding something obvious. Sorry for being a bit slow. :)
Keegsta ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:19:27 on July 5, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Actually, since this thing is heated up once and then cools off, it would be fine to use while sleeping. The heat doesn't actually last that long.

I've got a small hand-sized one, and it's actually good
There's a little metal tab floating around inside it that you flex to make it start heating up, and then you wrap it in a cloth and put it in boiling water for a few minutes to liquify the stuff inside it again.

Other people commented saying that you boil or microwave it. That redissolves the sodium acetate that has crystallized.
Then it's back to normal. You snap the thing and it crystallizes and releases heat.
