24min 3sec Guinness World Record longest apnea with O2 by Aleix Segura

On February 28th during the 17th Mediterranean Dive Show held in Cornellà, Barcelona, Aleix Segura Vendrell has broken the Guinness World Record holding his breath underwater for 24 minutes and 3 seconds. This longest breath hold ever reported has been achieved after inhaling pure oxygen, differently than apnea sport competitions.
Aleix Segura is currently the static apnea world champion in all freediving circuits capable of holding his breath for over ten minutes in normal conditions and has taken the risk of this stunt challenge with the support of the qualified IEM medical crew supervised by Dr. Agustí Ruíz and monitored among others by three AIDA judges including Oriol Navarro, apnea responsible in the club Cavalldemar, to control and guarantee the fairness of the performance officially fulfilling the Guinness standards of this attempt. An indoor swimming pool was set for the show suitable for both performance and TV media coverage of this show and challenge.

How is this even freaking possible?

I can’t even drink half a bottle of water without gasping for air!

adaminc · 53 points · Posted at 06:14:27 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

I used to be able to hold my breath when underwater, longer than above. My best was 4m18s.

It's a combination of not moving, just floating in the water. Calming yourself, and sort of meditating to lower your heart rate. Knowing you are underwater also helps prolong it.

I'm sure if you exercise a lot, cardio, you can do even better and be able to move around.

That was all before high school. I'd be lucky to hit 2min now, lol.

But 24min, that almost seems like a lie.

GiraffeDiver · 60 points · Posted at 12:38:22 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

It's after a 30min pure oxygen breath up so not comparable to your static 4m18s. On regular air he hits around 10-11m in competition so more human-like, but still very impressive.

Lukavyy · 16 points · Posted at 06:34:17 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

He was able to do it because of the diving reflex. Above water, he wouldn't stand a chance of beating the record.

merrickx · 8 points · Posted at 16:15:45 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

As well, your muscles are using a lot less oxygen over time when you're floating motionless in the water and not supporting your weight in any way.

Plus I'd imagine the pressure of the water helps with blood pressure too.

Best diver I knew was a heavy smoker. He could live on less O2 then normal, so his tanks lasted forever.

kevincrazykid · 74 points · Posted at 06:39:31 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

he used pure o2 as well. That is huge considering regular air is only 21% oxygen.

matzab · 49 points · Posted at 07:07:05 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

It's not just about oxygen. Getting rid of carbon dioxide is another (arguably: more) important part of breathing. Both do help in the diaphragm control necessary for this feat, though.

mongoosefist · 11 points · Posted at 07:32:47 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

This is very true. Your body can't detect a lack of oxygen, it can only detect a buildup of CO2. Hence why it's so easy for people to die from carbon monoxide.

PencilAbuser · 45 points · Posted at 10:25:54 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

Your body can't detect a lack of oxygen, it can only detect a buildup of CO2.

Not true.

The body is just more sensitive to an increase of pCO2 (sensed by central chemoreceptors) than drop in pO2 (sensed by peripheral chemoreceptors).

Thank you for your fact checking and correction.

Mathboy19 · 2 points · Posted at 18:06:40 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

The problem is that at that point you are most likely already dead, or to delirious to do anything. In the case of explosive decompression (like in an airplane) you will pass out before you 'notice' a lack of oxygen. That is why they always say to put your own mask on first.

From memory, you can only use low flow oxygen for some of these people. Ironically, giving lots of O2 drops their breathing drive, and they simply forget to breathe.

DirtyYogurt · 2 points · Posted at 15:28:52 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

I mean, I've been in a low ox environment before (18.5%) and I could feel it after just a few seconds. Or by detect so you mean a physical response (choking sensation)?

TurkFebruary · 2 points · Posted at 20:53:56 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

This is not true at all.

Carbon monoxide binds hemoglobin and isn't detected by the chemoreceptors in the carotid body.

bad-r0bot · 0 points · Posted at 09:59:42 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

Yeah... thanks evolution. Feels like a lack of oxygen should be what we detect :\

syncopate15 · 3 points · Posted at 18:07:51 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

We do detect a lack of oxygen. That comment was not true. Like someone above me said, it’s just that our CO2 censors are more sensitive than our O2 sensors. We still do have oxygen sensors, though, which kick in when needed.

it's a breath-holding competition

matzab · 2 points · Posted at 07:12:34 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

Yes. It's a not-breathing competition, so the necessary aspects of breathing are certainly relevant. It's not just about oxygen. You need to control CO2 levels in blood and absent that the diaphragm's reaction to high CO2 (and, yes, low O2) levels.

Would also be cool to see a pulse oximeter attached to him to see how low his O2 levels go.

[deleted] · 3 points · Posted at 19:13:57 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

That is an inaccurate range to say the least. Wikipedia says the world record is 26.

Edit: It looks like I'm wrong because that is resting heart rate out of water. It looks like there have been freedivers with as low as 7 bpm which is blowing my mind and David Blaine says he can do 12 bpm on pure o2 static apnea.

This drop is heart rate between air and water is because of the Diving Reflex.

David Blaine gave a really interesting talk[1] on what it takes to achieve this sort of feat.

[1]

How I held my breath for 17 minutes

In this highly personal talk from TEDMED, magician and stuntman David Blaine describes what it took to hold his breath underwater for 17 minutes -- a world record (only two minutes shorter than this entire talk!) -- and what his often death-defying work means to him. Warning: do NOT try this at home.

Phytor · 3 points · Posted at 20:14:53 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

I love that video and the fact that he managed to break the record after all that training! A lot of people understandably assume that he faked it given that he got famous doing magic, but David Blaine also just does really crazy shit for shock factor, like eating peoples wine glasses.

To those curious about how this feat is physiologically possible here’s an answer I gave to an ask science question about the same subject:

When you hold your breath you have a store of oxygen available in your lungs that will last several minutes at least. How long exactly - well let's do some very simple maths. The average person has a total lung capacity of 6 litres. If they breathed pure oxygen for around 5 minutes prior to breath holding they could be confident of replacing all 6 litres of air (21% oxygen) with pure O2. The rate of oxygen consumption that the body uses at rest is about 250ml per minute. 6000/250 = 24 minutes of oxygen stores after that deep breath in of pure oxygen. And that's just in the lungs. The blood carries about 20ml of oxygen per 100ml of blood, mainly attached to haemoglobin molecules. An average man has 5 litres of blood and therefore has about another litre of oxygen dissolved in it - that's another 4 minutes of survival.

So you can see how there's enough oxygen stored to make these records physiologically plausible. Individuals with larger lungs, more blood, more haemoglobin or slower metabolisms could achieve even greater feats of breath holding than this and I'm sure records will continue to be set.

Star_Tropic · 9 points · Posted at 07:54:56 on May 6, 2018 · (Permalink)

The water is probably really cold. Cold water will make your body pull blood from the extremities to keep your core warm. But since its cold water he can't be in it for 24 minutes straight. So the wet suit lets him be in cold water enough to shock his body but still maintain enough warmth to not get injured from it.
