I got stuck in a glass elevator too, I'm glad it was glass and in the hotel lobby because it meant they figured out pretty quick something was wrong and to fix it...although they didn't fix it fast enough at all and I managed to pry it open from the inside. I didn't break or damage the elevator though like this guy. They fixed it while I was sleeping, but I didn't use it the next day.

In my old work, there was an anti-tailgating door that was effectively a glass tube you stepped into and it rotated to let you out on the other side. I always made sure I'd been to the bathroom before getting into it. Nobody wants to desperately need a pee when stuck in full public view.

We should have realized what was coming for us as we watched patches of the city getting dark..The doors opened as we stopped, leaving about 18 inches of the closest floor visible at the top of the elevator. One time I was stuck in an elevator and I had no phone reception. I panicked and hit the little alarm button. A phone started ringing...to a message that said, "the number you have dialed...is out of service." I had to pry the doors open and crawl out. Stupid, I know now.

From being a roller coaster nerd with all their safety switches and precautions I know this, but people are fucking idiotic when it comes to public safety. They don't for some stupid reason understand how over-engineered things are and how safe they are all the time. These are the people that watch movies and TV shows and think that it's reality, when anyone with a brain that watches knows full well what is happening on the screen is anything but physically or practically possible. It's annoying as hell.

When elevators or rides stop it's not because something is "wrong" or something is "broke" it's because the system is acting exactly how it should precisely for your safety.

First ride along I went on with a Police officer was a call for a dude stuck in an elevator freaking out. Dude was drunk and there was a super loud buzzing coming from withing because of the alarm. This guy was stuck for about 40 minutes. Fire dept said they can open it but it'll destroy it and to see when the elevator tech can come in ( since the guy wasn't in actual danger). Th etech was about 25 minutes out and this was at 9pm at night. Two officers were there including my officer. The officers tried to calm him down and explain he'll be out soon. Guy lost it and threatened the cops with violence the second the doors opened.The two officers basicaly said 'oh shit' and put on their leather gloves. The tech showed up about 10 minutes later and the doors opened and buddy walked out and immediately apologized for his outburst and hugged his wife. It was intense and was a very small portion of the night life of someone working in emergency response

Bullshit, Couple of months ago I was stuck in elevator at work at the end of the day, office was emptying out, facilities staff gone home, my mobile phone back on my desk. alarm button dials some bullshit number , clearly not even a working line. lad with me manages to geta mobile reception and get hold of facilities after 40 mins (much as I tried to convince him to ring the fire brigade because they must be used to this AND at least you know theyll get there soon). so facilities say do not attempt to break out, theres an engineer on the way, but no indication of exactly when. Im thinking its friday evening rush hour here, wtf? waited another hour. it gets hot and clammy quickly inside a.sealed elevator. I was surprised how little ventilation there must be, because the breathing air became pretty crap. we decided we would have to try and crack the door a bit to get some breathing air. In the end we said screw this and the other lad broke the doors open and got us out. You know when the lift engineer turned up? Tuesday. I'm not even claustrophobic, but I defy anyone capable of breaking out to willingly not do so unless they have a high degree of confidence in exactly when theyre going to be released. What takes the piss the most? facilities trying to get us in trouble for breaking out, even though their engineer came 4 days later.... Ever happens again, Im calling the lift company first and telling them that billion dollar industry or not, they have 30 mins before I call the fire brigade.

A few years ago after an event there were ~15 people in an elevator for 8 people. The elevator got stuck between the metro and the exit. They were all jammed in there and looked really uncomfortable being stuck at chest level to the exit floor. I tried to help by opening the door with my car key and tried to turn this nut at the top of the door. Well it worked and the door opened, they all climbed out and i felt like a hero.

Would the integrity of the cables holding the elevator matter if whatever they're held on to at the top wasn't taken into account? The weakest link may not be the cables, but the construction of what's holding them there. If they're all attached to one thing and that one thing can only support x lbs then wouldn't that be an issue?

US has good regulations but we do a piss poor job of enforcing them. Look up how often elevators need to be regularly inspected in your state. Now go into an elevator and (assuming they have their legal documents legally posted inside) check the date it was last inspected.

I used to deliver food and would check every single elevator I entered. It's safe to say 1/3 of elevators aren't inspected and maintained to code in this area.

Except when you step into a dodgy elevator in Russia, like I did. Emergency button was missing, and the emergency telephone ripped out (loose cables etc). It stopped between floors and all the lights were flickering. After 10 mins it started again after beating on the doors, yelling, trying to pry it open etc. It's easy to panic when you don't think anyone even knows you're stuck

I saw about a dozen people, including a baby, get stuck in a very crowded elevator at an event in NYC the other day and they (and their companions who took the stairs) calmly waited the 5-10 minutes it took maintenance to figure it out.

My sophomore year of college I got stuck in an elevator. Not only that, it was an elevator with a glass side facing outside, sun streaming in during mid-august in Southern California. It took about 35 minutes for the maintenance guys to get me and the girl I was stuck in there with out, by which point it was pretty toasty. Neither of us at any point did so much as express annoyance because we both knew there wasn't any danger and that shit happens. That family is fucked.

It went up and then went all the way back down and the door didn't open again. That's when I decided to tell her I'd just been previously stuck in the elevator. Whatever, we both just chilled and asked about majors and such.

About 5 mins later the door opened by itself and we walked out. We could hear the sirens in the distance coming to save us. As I was walking out of the garage I saw a guy walking to the elevator and for a brief second thought about telling him not to get on, but I decided he seemed like the type of guy who would love telling the story of how he got rescued by the fire department that one time he got stuck in the elevator.

No kidding. Based on the title and the initial reaction seen in the video, I thought it was an infant or toddler that was stuck in the elevator. To see at the end that it's a young adult, and yet everyone is over-reacting as if they have never been in a public elevator before just makes me cringe.

A guy at my office got stuck in our elevator. He pressed the call button, got security immediately, and they radioed for a maintenance guy to come, which took about 20 minutes for him to arrive. He then had him out in about 10 - 15 minutes.

Yeah I can offer a counter story - there were about 12 of us in an elevator going down to the ground floor of a fairly large upmarket resort at the beach. When it got to ground, it dropped about a foot abruptly and we were stuck.

Call button didn't do anything, which was nice. So we pryed the inner doors open, but the outer doors only opened about 2 inches because of a lock or something. Managed to get the attention of another guest who got management, who proceeded to do fuck all and only called the fire brigade after 30 minutes. We were in there for about an hour all up

I got stuck in an elevator in my apartment building early on a Saturday on the way to the gym. I called the building maintenance on my cell phone (hey man there could have been spiders in that phone compartment) and sat down and waited. It took 45minutes for them to come get me out but I knew to only real danger I would be in would be getting out of the elevator (falling to your death in one is not a thing anymore). Overall it wasn't bad at all, I had my audio book so I really didn't give a shit. Watching these people make me sick, you want to get your kids hurt? This is how you do it, just wait for the elevator guy to come.

The shitty thing is, the family probably hired an attorney, sued the elevator company and got a huge settlement. Now they live in a three bedroom trailer instead of a two bedroom trailer. There was an actual child stuck in there with him. You can hear them say, "get vivi" or something and then you see her at the very end. These are probably people who have no idea how elevators work, and they honestly thought their kid was in danger from falling and dying (you can see how the elevator didn't stop in the correct stop).

I guarantee these people have no idea that it is literally impossible to die from a falling elevator, but I understand their panic if I put myself in their shoes.

Got stuck in an elevator on vacation in California once. We stayed in an old hotel, think it was called the "Hollywood Tower" or something. Really neat place, the bellstaff all wore cool retro uniforms. Anyway, the main elevators were out, so guests had to use the maintenance lifts. Hotel manager comes out and personally explains the situation to us, and gives a nice little history of the place. We ride up a bit, the doors open to a floor that isn't ours. NBD, we just stayed on figuring it might make some wrong stops as it's not really supposed to be used by guests. Eventually the doors opened to some kind weird half-way maintenance level, exposed pipes everywhere, a bit creepy.
That's when the lights went out completely.
We sat in total darkness for a moment, people nervously chuckled a bit to break the tension. Suddenly the elevator plunged 13 stories down...
