You're right about that being the original purpose of the site, and the name is even a reference to the total number of votes in the electoral college: 538. But the founder, Nate Silver, actually got his start in sports analysis, and sold the site to ESPN a few years back.

He still runs the site, but these days they cover a broader range of topics related to statistics and data. The podcast is all about data, though it's not all random or weird. A few weeks back they did some interviews with people who use data to predict crime, for example.

Well he kinda touched on this point. These things evolved specifically to predate on large spiders/Tarantulas. The sing has specifically evolved to instantly and permanently paralyze them so that their young can eat them.

That also applies to why they don't go after humans:

1) They aren't nest/hive insects so there is no territorial instinct in them that would drive them to outright attack something without provocation. Check out the way the wasp behaves when being held. It's just randomly stinging in the air because it's self defense instincts are going nuts and it just knows "I'm being held and attacked so sting till I"m not being held". It doesn't really realize that the big pink thing near him is what is holding him. That's also why it takes a few seconds for it to actually sting the guy, all it knows is that it's being attacked (or perceives itself as being attacked) not that the guy holding the thing that's holding it is what is doing the attacking.

2) This thing only recognizes 1 thing: Tarantulas. Coyote says it in the video but these things are specialized to find Tarantulas. They have scent receptors explicitly dedicated to detecting tarantula smells. And specialization like that comes at a price and in this case it's probably that these things just don't recognize anything but tarantulas as being...things at all.

But to the rest of your point I agree: what really is the difference between this and the bullet ant's venom? Why, if the Tarantula Hawk's venom is supposed to be a paralytic does it cause pain? Etc, etc.

All the stinging/biting insects use some chemical or another. Some are more biologically effective than others-- the bind and enter the cells of your body in a more efficient way. Muscle paralysis is a hallmark of Many venoms in different animals, for obvious reasons. The mechanism of paralysis is usually some sort of obstruction in the neural motor pathway. I.e. There is is a ligand in the venom that blocks the stimulation of the muscle fibers. It can be more complex with the different types of muscle (striated skeletal muscles like the arm, or smooth muscle like the heart etc).

Oh man, that episode made me so hungry. I can't remember where they got the wings for that one but it wasn't the regular wings. They were soooooooo crunchy and Tommy Chong made them look so damn delicious. I don't usually like crunchy, breaded wings for hot wings but those looked to be amazing.

It was cool to see such a big name on the show, and normally I like Kevin Hart, but that interview really annoyed me. Kevin was more interested in showing off for his boys than actually talking to the host.

I don't specifically dislike Kevin but I think that was the first interview I was disappointed with. I was really excited at first simply because I was amazed that he was on the show. Sean is already a bit awkward so I can't imagine how he felt having their biggest (shortest?) guest to date and he spends the whole time talking to people off camera.

Yellowjackets and other social wasps (Vespidae) are more likely to sting because they can afford being aggressive -- most of them are sterile parthenogenetic clones that are bred for the express purpose of being expendable.

Tarantula hawks are from a totally different family (Pompilidae) and are solitary, so they can't afford to fight everything that throws shade.

it was amusing because they block the way from goodsprings straight to the strip with cazadores and if you're new and eager you were screwed lol

They're what's called a Meat Gate. They don't actually block you off the route the Devs want you to follow, but they're an immersive way to keep you on track.

IMO, it's far better than an invisible wall.

Less of a fuck you and more of a please experience the game in the way we want you to experience.

Except Bethesda didn't even make that. Obsidian did the lion's share of the New Vegas content, while Bethesda just provided support with their Gamebryo engine.
