To those coming to the comments section to see how it works: this is casting tape. Similar to what is used to form the hard shell for casts on broken arms/legs/etc. It's a woven fiberglass roll with a polyurethane resin that sets with water.

Vergazo · 378 points · Posted at 03:50:50 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Honest question: is it as strong as he claims? or can it break like a cast can?

I have used this on my 20lb sledge. Broke the handle into 2 pieces inches below the head. Used this stuff and was able to use it normally. No issues yet. This was 2 years ago.

The Navy uses something like it for patching pipes under 150psi. They called it an Emergency Water Activated Repair Patch, or EWARP. I have used it, and it is a bitch to get off so you can actually repair the pipe.

Karwedsky · 47 points · Posted at 04:39:03 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Was going to say the same thing. I had to use it in some emergency drills but that was about it, and it was hard to get it to work 100% when fixing leaky pipes, but it was probably user error.

The tape was white instead of black, but other than that its the exact same thing.

Ewulkevoli · 5 points · Posted at 12:40:55 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

DC: Damage Controlman - a rating in the Navy that is mainly responsible for the maintenance and repair of firefighting equipment, pipe repair, welding and systems used for keeping the ship floating and safe.

nicu: Monel - a Nickel/copper alloy used for piping with very good corrosion resistance (seawater systems) very common on US navy seawater coolers and firemain systems.

DCA - Damage control assistance - Officer in charge of Damage control activities / division

My translation:

The old supervisor decided to run flooding / leak drills using active piping so EWARP (fiberglass reinforced resin tape) was wrapped around piping to fix a simulated drill.

However, the drill was never documented, so subsequent inspections would reveal a "damaged" pipe that needed replacing. Since replacing piping like that is a drydock or planned maintenance availability requirement, the "damaged pipes" would add up.

The damage control workers blasted the resin tape off and found no damage.

This would have cost upwards of 125k to fix.

How is that, /u/cgrugger?

Cruise rings are rings that are made from a nut. Everyday when you're on watch, you slowly shape the nut into a ring using sandpaper or emory cloth. No power tools are allowed. It is made using time and pressure over the course of a 6-9 month deployment at sea. I have a few laying around in the bottom of a box in my attic somewhere.

The Amazon reviews are pretty good. 50% 5 stars, 20% 1 star. The complaints seems to be about its ability to repair pipes. You probably need to apply it perfectly in order for it to be watertight. There are also better, easier products for that kind of repair. You don't need that level of rigidity and strength for a residential water pipe.

conformuropinion2rdt · 1 points · Posted at 09:57:28 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I wonder how it would actually do for car exhaust pipes. I know it would hold it initially, but they get really hot, have a ton of vibration and are always expanding and contracting. Iron and stainless do really well in those situations. This stuff seems more brittle like a ceramic and I wouldn't be surprised if after driving around for a few months or a year the continuous vibrations and stress would crack it.

Heat resistant fiberglass cloth retains 50% of room temperature tensile strength at 700 degrees and heat resistant steel hits 50% tensile strength around 600 degrees. Also fiberglass cloth is stronger than steel mesh of the same thickness. This is according to 5 minutes of Googling.

Captain_Nipples · 1 points · Posted at 02:21:53 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Instead of 5 or six dollars, you can repair pvc for half. A fucking monkey can do it.

I used to work at a sugar mill as a fitter/draftsman where literally half the place would corrode to some extent due to the sugar every year. I've used something very similar to this for fixing pipes on the go that couldn't be replaced during crush or just weren't important enough or to hard to fully replace. If done correctly this stuff works wonders but unless you know the perfect amount to use with any job you'll probably overkill it and it was pretty expensive as well.

Tl;DR I've seen it on pipes forgotten about for years that have to hold boiling water or very abrasive materials and it works really well.

Thnickaman · 19 points · Posted at 03:53:22 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Casts are usually plaster which is quite fragile. Fibreglass and polyurethane would be much stronger.

[deleted] · 90 points · Posted at 03:55:48 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Casts are very rarely plaster these days. It is all around cheaper for the fiber reinforced cast than a plaster one.

Thnickaman · 5 points · Posted at 04:15:09 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

My bad. I doubt they use polyurethane as a bonding agent though?

[deleted] · 9 points · Posted at 04:37:37 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

They do use polyurethane. If you use a waterproof padding material inside the fiberglass casting tape, you can take a bath with it on, or go swimming. Royal pain in the ass to dry, though.

[deleted] · 4 points · Posted at 04:24:12 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I'm not sure what the binding agent is. But last time I had a broken limb was roughly 16 years ago and even then the hospital I was at told me they only do the fiber casts. Even thinking about it, put a cotton sleeve on limb, dip roll into water and unravel onto limb smoothing out as you go. Repeat as needed. Then wait minutes to cure. Then compare to tedious and messy cotton cloth in a plaster mixture.

drgreen818 · 2 points · Posted at 06:19:08 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

My girlfriends cast was plaster. If we wanted fibre glass, we had to pay more. She broke her wrist this year.

We got the fibre glass cast after two weeks because the plaster cast was too heavy. We paid $47 for the fibre glass cast.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 15:38:50 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I had surgery on my hand about 6 years ago and was given a plaster cast (not sure why). It was a public hospital in Aus so I don't think it was a cost thing since I didn't pay for it anyway. Regardless, the cast was super heavy, but being ~12 years old the cast got damaged pretty fast. The solution was to add more plaster. This happened maybe 3 or 4 times so by the end the cast was massive and ridiculously heavy. Not to mention showering was a massive pain in the arse since the cast couldn't get wet and I couldn't swim that summer.

Gumshooo · 1 points · Posted at 06:10:51 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Plaster casts aren't too common. Plaster splints though are the gold standard for many applications (sugartong, short leg, coaptation, ulner gutter) while fiberglass splints are okay in other applciations (volar slabs, thumb spicas, and make bomb ass knee immobilizers)

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 13:21:32 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

We don't use plaster for casts anymore and haven't done so for at least 10-15 years, unless you're in some sort of third-world place. We use 3M ScotchCast, which is basically the same thing as Fiberfix. Much, much lighter and it breathes nicely so you don't end up with stinky festering dead skin.

I used it ony car to temporarily hold a Leak in my upper radiator hose where it connects to the radiator. Whatever you use it on, make sure it's exactly what you want.

rjcarr · 2 points · Posted at 07:27:20 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 04:43:14 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

no, he is playing fast and loose with "strong as steel". it would likely have a similar tensile strength as steel, but I'm sure there are duct tapes which could make the same claim. If you used enough of the stuff I don't think you would have to worry about it breaking, but you would still have to worry about adhesive (probably some kind of epoxy) giving way. It basically shitty fiber glass, that is really easy to apply

bottom line. you could not expect a broken steel rod that has been repaired with that stuff to be anywhere near as strong as it was before it broke.

sniper43 · 4 points · Posted at 10:06:51 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

A whole lot of claims with not a lot of source.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 10:44:14 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I don't care enough to back them all up but a quick google has the various tensile strengths steel fiberglass

Note: 55MPa for plain resin, that's what holding the tape on to what ever your fixing and the effective surface area is also going to be a fraction of what it would be if it were normal fiberglass.

which ones do you have a problem with?

I've used it on a leak in a steam pipe before (was and emergency repair and only normal house steam piping not what can be considered high pressure) shit held tight enough to last until the summer when it could be more easily repaired with the steam off and never leaked once.

For more mundane stuff i'm sure it will work great if it managed to hold for something it wasn't exactly designed to do.

Based on the production value of the commercial I'm smelling venture capital money. Dollar Shave Club was 2 drunk guys at a party with an idea and they got millions in funding.

No, just fiberglass, the commercial said so

Their FAQ page (6th question from the bottom) claims that it is much harder to remove than medical casting tape.

I quoted it for the extra lazy:

Can I use FiberFix as a cast in an Emergency?
FiberFix is much harder to get off than orthopedic casting wrap, so we recommend leaving casting to the medical pros!

I actually used this to repair the arms of some turn signal indicators on a motorcycle that had been snapped. I opened up the package and felt the roll and told my friend, "wtf, this is a cast?" I never looked into it, but I guess I was right. That shit does harden up pretty well, I kind of want to strength test it now.

Is it like concrete steel that the resin gives the structure and the fiberglass gives the strength and stands the tensile strain?

She is evil. She encouraged Tory to jump a bike over a cart when he wasn't going to make it and he ended up falling on his face. She even said "Let's egg him on until he hurts himself." He did a practice bunny hop next to it and asked if he would have cleared it and she was like "Oh yeah totally!" but he wasn't even close. Then she turned to Grant and was like "Hehe watch this." So then Tory got decent speed up and tried to bunny hop the cart and his bike hit it and he face planted on the pavement pretty hard. Great way to loose some teeth or permanently disfigure your face.

Then another time she hooked up the cow electric fence to the golden statues and Grant tested it first and said it hurt so much that they shouldn't use it for Adam. Those things hurt a lot. Then when Adam was about to touch them he asked her if she had hooked the electric fence to them and she said no. Then when Adam touched them and got shocked he freaked out and was really visibly upset for the only time I've seen on this whole show and he left right after and told the camera to stop filming him.

Those cow electric fence chargers are really powerful and painful, they are made to go through the thick hide of a cow and provide enough of a shock to get through a 1,000+ pound beast, not to mention get through the grass and other scrub that grows against it and weakens the signal as it travels around the field. They totally destroy people compared to what they do to cows because of the scale difference. That could have easily cause a heart attack.

I always liked her before but I ended up marathoning the first few seasons of mythbusters and noticed a very malicious trend in her even though she smiles as she does it.

My uncle had a farm before he died, and had his cows in by electric fence. We shocked outselves on the fence thousands of times, and no, it was nowhere near lethal or even dangerous. It doesn't take much to teach the cows they don't want to touch the fence. It's about surprising and scaring them, not getting through "thick hide". It's not a cattle prod. That's just stupid, why would ANY farmer use an electric fence that was dangerous? Sorry, you're completely wrong about cattle fence.

Sounds reasonable about the bike jump part, though. The fuck is wrong with her, she's risking someone else's body for kicks?

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 21:51:45 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Tori has had a massive crush on Kari since day one and is constantly trying to be macho infront of her. He flirts with her all of the time. Not really surprising that she encourages it and he goes for it.

What's even worse is the videos where they spend several minutes slowly talking about nothing and then when the actual subject you clicked on the video to see comes up they suddenly act like they're in a hurry and speed through it.

Thank you so much, tutorial maker, for wasting 7 minutes talking about trivial unimportant details and the subject of your future videos before tearing ass through the technical portion of the tutorial in 30 seconds so that it is literally impossible to follow. SO HELPFUL!

"Well so I saw that it says 8 lbs here, so I'm gonna weigh it. Yep it seems to be about 8 lbs. There's a few ounce difference so I wonder if maybe the stuff dried out or maybe they just write 8 to round it off. Oh well.

So apparently you gotta get the stuff wet first. So here we go. I'll just grab this bowl here. Got it in a set from Pier One. Nice, sturdy glass. Probably left out to cure in a cool dry place. The faucet here, let's see. The package says lukewarm water. So... I'll just turn the hot water handle a bit. Now the cold water handle a bit. And in 2 minutes we should be ready to fill up the bowl.

OK so now that we have our water bowl full of water. It's time to drop the tape in and let it soak. OK lets... open this box up. Oh, well, the tape is in a small clear plastic package that I could easily rip. Let's go across the house and get a pair of scissors. There we go. Now let's measure the circumference of the pipe I need to wrap, and use a ruler to measure how much tape I'll need......."

They had their last season. There will be no more Mythbusters. Although Adam still does stuff on youtube occasionally.

Edit, according to this source, On March 31, 2016, it was reported that the Science channel was developing a game show to find new hosts for a planned Mythbusters revival. It is currently unknown if the show's original cast will take part in either series.

Ptch · 32 points · Posted at 04:27:05 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Adam and Jamie were the absolute best pair, even if they didn't get along.

What?

_BreakingGood_ · 21 points · Posted at 06:47:45 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Adam spoke in an AMA a while back that while they do enjoy working together, they aren't really "friendly." They wouldn't go out for a beer or to a party for example.

joshi38 · 45 points · Posted at 07:00:45 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Which is fine, it's called a professional relationship. Penn and Teller don't socialise outside of work, not that they don't get on, they're just two very different people who work really well together as magicians.

Adam and Jamie are the same, they both work really well together, both have said that they trust each other implicitly when it comes to the safety of the stunts they pull, but they're very different people and don't get on outside of work.

JamEngulfer221 · 1 points · Posted at 14:17:21 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

That's really strange. It's like, I can kinda understand, but when I think about it, it doesn't make much sense. It just seems strange that they'd never make small talk in between filming things. Friendships develop through long term interactions with people. I get them being like that in the first season, but it feels weird they wouldn't have gotten a bit more friendly by the end of it.

joshi38 · 3 points · Posted at 14:32:49 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I don't think they outwardly hate each other (they still do certain work things together, not as much as on Mythbusters, but if they truly hated each other they would likely try to avoid each other like the plague), I think they simply don't like each other enough to want to hang out after work, which is fine.

There are people in my office I've known for years and I get on with like a house on fire, but I've no real intention of hanging out with them after work; we all have different lives.

abedfilms · 0 points · Posted at 07:16:19 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

HotLight · 4 points · Posted at 08:00:26 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

They never broke apart. Their professional bond has been strong enough to work together on Mythbusters, had a working relationship for a decade before that, and they both still have spots on tested.com. That is a 23 year relationship that still functions in much the same way as it always has.

abedfilms · 1 points · Posted at 08:12:34 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Right i didn't mean an actual breakup or fight, i just meant things are never quite as they seem

Ptch · 4 points · Posted at 06:43:32 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

They had a hard time getting along/being friends outside of the show. Even so they said they each would trust the other with their life, and have done just that on many occasions.

MGlBlaze · 2 points · Posted at 08:25:35 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

That's just a strictly professional relationship. They aren't interested in being friends, but they enjoy working together. It's perfectly fine. Sometimes people just aren't interested in being 'friends', as such.

He is on the same crew that did the soccer and volleyball videos with Scott Sterling. I think he's one of the teammates that props Scott up in the chair, maybe. Or he's the announcer. It wouldn't surprise me if he wrote half the dialogue in this fiber fix commercial.

Maybe you could help me. Back around 2006 there was a comedy series about a small start up company fixated on making the next big internet meme. It kind of played out in the style of Agents of Cracked with a main character duo between a serious guy and a zany partner. Was that done by Studio C as well? I remember the website at the time had the name of something like "Studio ___" but I have not been able to find it...

This ad must have been made by the same people that made the ad for the Purple Mattress; it has the same pacing and some of the same effects.

EDIT: Did some searching, and both ads (and the squatty potty ad /u/Smile_And_Wave_Boys mentions below) are done by the Harmon Brothers.

They have a YouTube channel where they post behind the scenes videos, like the one for this ad.

The European manufacturer, Fabrique Nationale

RobertNAdams · 2 points · Posted at 06:26:42 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Which means (if my Spanish holds up) National Fabrics. It's all part of their history - they used to make yarn until the owner got pissed at a dress shop and shot the place up. Then they decided to run with the whole gun thing after that because no one was buying their dresses.

ogtfo · 1 points · Posted at 15:26:46 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

This is completely false.

Fabrique Nationale is french for "National Factory". It's located in belgium, not spain, and I'm pretty sure it has no history as a yarn manufacturer.

MAG (aka M240)

BigCommieNat · 12 points · Posted at 06:03:50 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

nope, you too can own a completely legal machine gun as long as:
* you pass a background check with your local authorities
* you pay $200 for a tax stamp
* you pay ~$15,000 for an automatic weapon made and registered before 1986...

good luck, have fun, don't shoot your eye out

Can americans buy those guns? Like, the exact one in that video?

USCAV19D · 2 points · Posted at 21:47:12 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Short answer: it depends.

Long answer:

So in the 1920s and 1930s, an era when organized crime destroyed American cities with automatic weapons such as the Thompson and BAR, the Federal Government sought to limit their access to such weapons. The National Firearms Act of 1934 was born, making the purchase of fully automatic guns more regulated than "regular" guns. A federal agency had to control the weapons in question and regulate who was able to purchase them. Items that were controlled, not prohibited by the National Firearms Act became known as NFA items, and their regulation fell to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE). Aside from fully automatic weapons, the NFA also limited the ownership of short-barreled rifles, sawed-off shotguns, and suppressors.

Fast forward to 1986. Congress passes the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) which did some pretty great stuff for gun owners in the States. Primarily it ensured that the Federal Government could not keep a register of every gun owner in the country, nor could it require said owner to document every gun owned. To make this bill more palatable to those in favor of stricter gun control, the FOPA also outlawed the manufacturing or importation of any more fully automatic weapons made or imported after 1986 (the year the bill became law). The only exception to this were licensed dealers possessing the proper authorization from the ATF.

This had a pretty predictable effect: the number of fully automatic NFA weapons made before 1986 all of the sudden became finite. As such costs rose dramatically. Here's an idea of what we're talking about. An automatic "AR-15" selling for over $30,000, compared to about $700 for a similar, semi-automatic only version.

Since the FN P90 was produced years after the FOPA was passed, there are exactly zero anywhere in the US that are legal to own, except for those who old the license to do so as a dealer. In order to deliver a similar product to a hobbyist, companies often sell non-NFA versions of their products to the public, modified as such. [The legal version of the P90 is the PS90, which is semi-automatic only, and has a longer barrel so it does not qualify as a NFA-controlled short barrel rifle]. Modifying such weapons to fire fully automatic is a decent amount of work that requires a competent gunsmith, and is highly illegal. As in, it'll land you in a Federal "pound-me-in-the-ass" prison illegal.

I don't own any NFA items, but I'm aware of the laws surrounding them. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Here's some more info

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 13:52:52 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

It's not the same thing. The resin in this is impregnated with metal and its carbon fiber not fiberglass.

They even say clearly DONT use it as a cast cause you'll have a lot of issues getting it off.

[deleted] · 3 points · Posted at 15:31:45 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

The FAQ and the patent say nothing of the sort. In fact, the patent implies it's exactly what it appears to be -- fiberglass casting tape.

Maybe they keep that metal mess under wraps, though, idk.

samsc2 · -1 points · Posted at 03:32:56 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

You can pretty much make it yourself if you want. They sell fiberglass and resin all over. As for the water activated kind just search for specifically water activated.

samsc2 · 2 points · Posted at 04:48:45 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

All you do is just find prepolymer resin Synthappret which cures through a reaction with water. Take your fiberglass cloth and lay it on w/e it is you're wanting to lay it on coat it with prepolymer resin Synthappret then spray it with water or just let it sit allowing atmospheric water to react.

If you use this as a cast you might be able to punch or kick through cinder blocks.

[deleted] · 19 points · Posted at 03:27:09 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

You could probably punch or kick through cinder blocks with a typical cast. You generally won't want to, though, on account of the broken bones that are likely protected by said cast.

[deleted] · 8 points · Posted at 04:46:00 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

You actually can't. This stuff is strong in terms of pulling (tensile), not so much in terms of pushing (compression/deformation). It also loses strength as it's deformed, as the glass fibers break, until eventually it's basically just plastic.

So for a boxing glove, this stuff will not stop you from shattering every bone in your hand. But for repairing a shovel or a rake, like in the commercial, that should work just fine.

UPVOTE_TO_THE_ASS · 1 points · Posted at 06:13:37 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

there are actually rumors of boxers who cheated and severely injured their opponents by using tape like this to wrap their hands with. As the boxers hands get sweaty during the fight, the cast hardened and gave a very unfair advantage. I'd say it would be pretty effective with some padding like real boxing tape underneath.

Tim0ktheDino · 29 points · Posted at 05:06:24 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

DO NOT use this stuff anywhere that it will be in constant contact with moving water. Leak repair is this product's major weakness and honestly they should stop advertising it as good for it. If you check the Amazon for reviews involving leaks you will find most of them are negative. Repair for items that will take impact are where it shines.

rjcarr · 8 points · Posted at 08:07:03 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I guarantee you, I have no affiliation with this product. But I'll be damned if fiberfix isn't the best damn tape in the market. FiberFix. I used it to repair my house after it fell into a sinkhole following a horrific tornado incident. Good as new. Buy fiberfix now and get 10% off. Use the coupon code: EMPLY325.

Yeah this whole post is dripping with "buy this product" and click here!'s. Hard to see how other haven't noticed this.

RockLoi · 41 points · Posted at 12:53:43 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

What's to notice? It's not masquerading as anything other than what it is; this is really a stretch for /r/HailCorporate. If people are seeing a clearly labelled advertisement, which is good content in and of itself and apparently for a good product (with citations) and still taking issue with it then I think they're just looking for excuses to be critical of something.

RabidMuskrat93 · 2 points · Posted at 13:03:40 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

The title of the post was what got me thinking /r/HailCorporate with the whole "best commercial ever!!1!" vibe and then a lot of the video has a lot of "fellow kids" type of feel to it.

I will admit, it was a very well done commercial for what people have claimed is a good, yet over priced, product. But being a good product doesn't mean it isn't /r/HailCorporate when month old accounts are posting the praises of the product as others have claimed (I'm on mobile and can't see all comments so I assumed they were buried at the bottom).

RockLoi · 2 points · Posted at 13:16:03 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Firstly I don't see any evidence of there being more new activity than any other /r/all post, so I can't really speak to that unless someone can actually show some statistical significance.

a lot of the video has a lot of "fellow kids" type of feel to it

Yeah course, it's an ad that's targeted to a demographic. My point is that there are two kinds of /r/hailcorporate users, those that don't like being surreptitiously advertised to be it intentional or otherwise, and those that think that any kind of marketing or advertising is a problem.

If you're the former then a clearly labelled commercial that is good content in and of itself doesn't become /r/hailcorporate-worthy, and if you're the latter then stay indoors and stop using the internet.

RabidMuskrat93 · 1 points · Posted at 13:35:34 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I actually went looking and didn't find any of the "month old accounts" I had seen people talk about but I did find one that was about 4 or 5 lines (on mobile so like, 12 words or so per line) that was all one huge link to their site that was stating it was all a link to their site.

And I just don't like it when commercials lay the "may may talk" on thick. I get their targeting a demographic, but when it gets heavy handed it makes me feel like they're talking to me like I'm a child. Just gets annoying imo.

RockLoi · 1 points · Posted at 13:47:27 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Well yeah I'm sure people affiliated with the product would probably come out of the woodwork when they see it hit the frontpage of reddit; I know I would.

[deleted] · 29 points · Posted at 03:38:17 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Honestly...you might be.

I don't get what's so horrible about advertising. Our generation acts like ads are made of pure acid and anyone who laughs at them or comments on one is a paid robot by FacelessGigantiMoneycorp, but in the same breath they wax nostalgic about the ads they grew up with in the 1980's like somehow advertising was different then. They're ads, not the antichrist.

Just enjoy the gad-damn video. Who gives a shit if it's an ad, and who gives a shit what the comments say. Even this one.

Narwahl_Whisperer · 9 points · Posted at 10:05:19 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

aussieredditboy · -4 points · Posted at 11:18:25 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

What...? You should care. Ads that come on in between TV shows or at the start of YouTube (for people dumb enough to not use AdBlock), are not pretending to be anything else. I wouldn't put it past Reddit to have companies paying them to promote ads onto their frontpage with fake upvotes and then watch as the hoardes of people defend the product against anyone who seems cynical or disbelieving.

Maybe it's my personal sensibilities, but I thought the ad was lame as fuck. It just stole the whole format from the Old Spice ads - MANLY MAN bullshit - and I'm sure they probably stole that from someone else before that.

RockLoi · 1 points · Posted at 13:00:21 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

If content needed to be original to be entertaining I would barely read, watch, play or consume any media.

And I don't use adblock because I don't mind ads and don't want to risk blocking revenue streams for content creators.

aussieredditboy · 1 points · Posted at 00:04:49 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

HAHAHAH- okay guy. Well, corporate shills must love you - you're their perfect little guinea pig. You should wear 'trendy' Coca-Cola T-shirts in public as well.

RockLoi · 1 points · Posted at 00:59:57 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yep I drink Coca-Cola too; fucking love the stuff way more than most soft drinks. Because I use and enjoy the product.

What's sad is that I enjoy and willingly promote products that I like and you somehow call me a guinea pig for it. What do you do when you like a product? Shame yourself for being a victim of capitalism?

aussieredditboy · 1 points · Posted at 04:43:29 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Lol - not talking about me, but I love how proudly you act as a mouthpiece to big-corp. I'd sooner someone shame themselves for being a victim of capitalism, than an apologetic little servant.

RockLoi · 1 points · Posted at 10:21:27 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)*

What do you do when you like a product or service? You've never given a positive opinion on one or recommended something to a friend? You must have some deep-seated issues if you are so scared of appearing servile that you won't have or share your own opinions.

You're blind to the fact that just because it happens to promote some big company it's still about you, not them.

aussieredditboy · 1 points · Posted at 00:52:35 on August 20, 2016 · (Permalink)

"It's still about you" - Me: "Not talking about me".

Don't be proud of your servility.

RockLoi · 1 points · Posted at 01:04:32 on August 20, 2016 · (Permalink)

I'm proud of my own preferences. You still haven't actually responded to any of my points other than parroting anti-consumerism propaganda yourself so I'm beginning to wonder who is more servile.

If you're not talking about you who are you talking about?

aussieredditboy · 1 points · Posted at 07:53:31 on August 20, 2016 · (Permalink)

HAHAHA - an anti-consumerist is "servile"? I don't think you understand the meaning of the word. To be servile, you would need a master. A person who rejects consumerism has no master but themselves. But, with mental gymnastics I'm sure you can manipulate that idea in your mind so that the other is servile.

Again, this wasn't about me. It was about your willingness to defend big corp - I have had no good words to say about any major corporation, firstly because I'm not a mouthpiece, but secondly because it wasn't about me.

Meanwhile, you've defended multiple corporations already. Coca-cola is a particularly hilarious one to defend, considering the environmental damage, monopolization of the softdrink industry, and the money Coca-cola makes off selling water with margins that would make Bill Gates piss himself in envy.

Just so that YOU stop parroting, I'm not talking about myself - because I didn't do the one thing that I was calling you out for - which was openly defending big corp.

RockLoi · 1 points · Posted at 08:07:53 on August 20, 2016 · (Permalink)

You clearly have an agenda you serve, and actually seem to either be a bot or a troll because none of your comments are responding to any of my questions. Of course it's about you, because you are the one bringing up Coca-Cola in the first place and so I ask you whether you either do not consume any large scale goods or services or whether you simply silence yourself about them. I ask whether you think it's unreasonable to support content creators just because it also happens to support someone who's bought ad-space.

I haven't defended coca cola; I certainly don't agree with everything the company does. However, I will share my preference for their product because that is something about myself that I'm well within my rights to share. I'm not going to restrict or censor my words because it also happens to promote a product. This is what I'm talking about: I said I'm less servile because I serve myself, if that benefits others by accident then so be it.

When you are trying to call someone stupid you should make sure you can form a coherent sentence. Now go back to laughing at farts because you think it makes you smart.

I'll never understand Reddit's mentality on ads. Like if someone is trying to sell something, it totally invalidates the quality of the content.

Ad or not, it's a fucking funny video. Who cares if it's an ad?

[deleted] · 39 points · Posted at 06:12:54 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

We should be promoting this type of commercial, just imagine if you could watch TV and all the commercials were like this. I might actually watch TV again.

ahoneybadger3 · 23 points · Posted at 09:43:03 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

5 minutes per ad of somebody constantly shouting at you to buy their product?

Do you not think that would get old, really quickly?

diadmer · 2 points · Posted at 13:50:31 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

It's funnier than half the shows I watch, so I'd probably endure it like I do them.

High_Octane_Memes · 1 points · Posted at 13:52:35 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I believe he meant the quality of the humor rather than the length.

ReddEdIt · 1 points · Posted at 14:42:19 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

You can't really appreciate the Fiber-Fix ad until you've seen it for the 218th time. That's when the nuance really shines through.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 16:12:12 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

No, if all ads were entertaining like this. Don't you think the TV show with the same zombies would get old, really quickly?

ahoneybadger3 · 1 points · Posted at 16:38:26 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

That's really a viewers choice to watch that program though, you never sit down, turn on the TV and go 'oh I think I'll watch 30 minutes of advertisements today'.

aussieredditboy · -1 points · Posted at 11:47:16 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Agreed. This post is bullshit... Companies paying Reddit to jump to the frontpage on fake upvotes. This ad is literally just the Old Spice ads but more shit.

[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 19:48:14 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

You'd get sick of them after the 5th viewing just like with all other ads.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 21:15:38 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah, but normal ads I get sick of after 0 viewings. I'd say 5 is an improvement.

aussieredditboy · -1 points · Posted at 11:48:12 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

What? Ads that rip off the format of the Old Spice ads?

TurboGranny · 4 points · Posted at 05:53:51 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

It's a bit of a wash. There are the base of people that don't like it when an ad feels forced. When one wasn't really that good yet some how it hits the front page and has a lot of positive comments, is an example of that. There is also the people that usually pile on when this happens, but they don't quite know the difference between people gaming the system and something that is actually interesting which is what is happening here. I hate commercials, and a just shut down when someone is trying to sell me something. However, I straight watched this 5 minute commercial and enjoyed it. The product isn't a new concept, but it was presented and marketed well. I don't want it any more than I did before the commercial, but I want the people behind the commercial to be allowed to make more. Several of us older guys figure that if we must watch commercials, they should at least be entertaining.

Seppi449 · 1 points · Posted at 08:36:38 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

If anything is entertaining I don't mind, I mean most movies are trying to sell you something.

aussieredditboy · -2 points · Posted at 11:49:37 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Lol... the fact that you are comparing TV type advertisements with feature length movies is the reason utter shit like this hits the frontpage...

Seppi449 · 1 points · Posted at 16:54:35 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I would much rather encourage entertaining ads than to disregard something on the premise it is trying to sell you something.

aussieredditboy · 0 points · Posted at 00:03:34 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Why is it entertaining? Because it steals the Old Spice format? It has a main orator who is 'hyper-masculine' in interest to a point where it makes masculinity a complete joke?

Maybe I have a problem with the Southern US accent - but this ad really grates. I can't believe you just sat through an entire five minute ad, 'entertaining' or not.

Seppi449 · 1 points · Posted at 02:42:02 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

I guess I like when they show off how cool a product is and do some entertaining things with it.

aussieredditboy · 1 points · Posted at 04:33:43 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Seppi449 · 1 points · Posted at 04:47:14 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Early 20's I just enjoyed the ad because I've used something similar in my line of work that was way more expensive.

aussieredditboy · 0 points · Posted at 06:05:04 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

That's fair enough. I didn't mean to be obnoxious - we differ in liking the ad or not... It doesn't entertain me, I appreciate that it can others.

Seeing ads, entertaining or not, rushing to the top of the front page make me suspicious - that's all.

Also, this is similar to the stuff used on casts - and as far as I know, it's pretty cheap already. The difference is that this is slightly broader.

Seppi449 · 1 points · Posted at 07:33:38 on August 19, 2016 · (Permalink)

Oh yeah I too am extremely cynical when it comes to things like that but it had a mythbuster type feel.

milky228 · 1 points · Posted at 15:57:37 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

it has 4700 upvotes, the majority of reddit clearly does not care if it's an ad.

rempel · 1 points · Posted at 17:11:25 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

I suppose some people have a deep aversion to ads. I know for myself I am bothered by anything that's trying to sell me something. It being funny doesn't justify that, fuck ad men.

So FiberFix may have just solved Americas medical bill problem.

Got a broken bone? Drink a fifth of whiskey, because that what men drink. Then place the bone back in place with your bare hands and just FiberFix it

3DGrunge · 1 points · Posted at 20:55:27 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

BrainThrust · 2 points · Posted at 13:59:52 on August 18, 2016 · (Permalink)

Just going to leave this here: How they really did it

Four test cars were built in total. The cages were welded to the underside of the car, but held together completely by tape or FiberFix. Tack welds were used to set the cages into place, but ground down in “final assembly” leaving the tape or FiberFix as the only adhesive item keeping the respective cages together

also

“The cars used were Geo Metros stripped of engine, transaxle, radiator, gas tank, and glass. The steering and brakes were both left intact and functioning.”

“The rollcages were made of 2" OD .120 wall HREW steel tubing.”

“A foundation for each roll cage was welded to the under-belly of each car. The foundation has 8 mount points that protrude out from the underside of the car. The cages were built on these mount points.”

“The roll cages were built and assembled using small tack-welds on each joint. This means there was one tiny weld on each joint, just to hold the cage together during construction.”

“We used an angle grinder to completely remove each tack weld prior to applying tape. Because the welds were completely removed, each joint was 100% held together by tape, and only tape.”

“We used 2x more duct tape than FiberFix. Each “T” shape joint had 40 yards of duct tape or 20 yards of FiberFix. The “X” shaped joints each had 50 yards of duct tape or 25 yards of FiberFix.”

Im a DIY guy, I like fixing things, I'm also their target demographic, but the repeated use of "manly" really wasn't necessary. Repeating that term over and over made the it more juvenile than it should have been and really limits the demographic this is being aimed at. They could have replaced "manly" with tough or "badass" and all the jokes would have worked the same.

Coming from a guy who hates almost every single ad he sees, this was actually. . . a very well-made ad. It was funny, it was engaging. It showcased the product very thoroughly. I was actually going to do some minor repairs on my eavestroughs this weekend (I'd previously repaired another section with some fibreglass cloth and polyester resin) but this product looks like an easier, less messy, more convenient alternative. I don't know how well it will work for my purpose, but Canadian Tire sells a pack of this stuff for $7. You bet I'm going to buy it and try it out. This is the first time I can remember actually going out any buying a product based on an ad. Kudos to everyone involved in making this ad :)

Really I got bored after the car went off the cliff the second time.

It's a bit like a knock off Old Spice ad. The manliness comedy thing wears pretty thin pretty fast.
