Earlier today I was searching for ways to make a game I downloaded run more smoothly. I'm looking for INI tweaks, launch options and the like. I see a four-minute video on the subject so I watch the whole thing which could be summed up as 'go to options menu and set graphics to low'. For the entire last minute of the video the whole screen had 'LETS SMASH THAT 10000 LIKE GOAL!' overlaid onto it. DOG YOU DIDNT EVEN TEACH ANYONE ANYTHING YOU JUST READ THE MENU BACK TO US AND YOU WANT 10K LIKES FOR IT? I fucking hate this shit.

Its okay, he said you only need the mouse to click new doc. You can also do it with your keyboard using the shortcut Ctrl+N. Or if you have a mac you can also do it with CMD+N
If you have linux then you will first need to go to your local BestBuy, Wal_Mart, Apple Store, Target, or some other store that sells electronics like OfficeMax, Staples, ect. Afterwards, talk to a sales associate about how you need a computer for photoshop and show them a picture of the effect you're trying to recreate.
I use a trackball. Is a trackball acceptable for the purposes of this tutorial?

I have a mouse but mine isn't either of the ones he mentioned and I'm really unsure about whether my mouse could do this or not... I get that he couldn't let the video stretch out too long but is it really too much to ask for to list all the mice (or is it mouses when talking about the computer mouse?) that can complete this task?

You're wrong unless you're talking about the iPhone. Dolphin Browser on Android allows you to change User Agent to Desktop in Advanced Settings. You may have to sideload Flash as well.
Well yeah, obviously if you use a Desktop user agent to view the full YouTube website in a browser then you can change the speed, but that's not what they mean. You can do that on an iPhone too.
When people say mobile they mean the YouTube app, which you can't change the speed on.
If you're on Android, you could try BSPlayer-- Install it, and instead of playing the video when you find it in the YT app, "Share" it to BSPlayer. Then, you can use the little speedometer icon on the right side to change the speed. (It also supports really intuitive gestures and volume levels over 100%. I recommend it.)
Now, if someone could tell me how to do it on a Roku...

Wait, BSplayer still exists? I used a player called that in Windows like 15 years ago, before I found VLC I guess. It was nice.
Yeah. I've never used the desktop version, though it still exists, but the Android version is pretty good. It's kind of a Coke/Pepsi comparison with something like MXPlayer on Android-- mostly similar, but there are little differences to tip the scales one way or the other depending on what you like.
On Android, you can use the mobile version of Firefox and a plugin that lets you control the video speed. This also means you can block ads with uBlock Origin, too.
I watch so much of this one guy playing this one game that I can watch it at 2x and still catch every word just because of how much I'm used to hearing him talk. I think about all the time I'm saving and try to avoid acknowledging the reality that I'm still just spending hours on youtube watching a grown man play video games

Best function ever, indeed. I actually found a Firefox addon that lets you set it as high as you want. Some videos, I can ramp up to 2.5x or even 3x and still get the gist, though those are mostly people talking through code they're writing on-screen, so it's usually pretty obvious.
(I'm on a different computer, so unfortunately I don't have the name of the addon handy. Your Google's as good as mine.)
Yes. This. Any DIY instructional video is improved so much by using this feature. Also, using 'l' to skip forward 10 seconds at a time helps.

Your next step is realizing the 25% rule:
Literally every video of youtube "starts" at around 1/3 - 1/4 of its length. So next time you watch a video, set it to x1.5 or x2 whatever suits you, and just skip 25% of its length forward to reach to the point information is becoming relevant.

Yep, very useful function for online classes. The lecturers always speak so freakin slow but you can't just skip around since the entire lecture has essential information.
So I've been doing the 1.5 or 2.0 speed thing for a good few months, as a way to get through more videos in a shorter time (I watch a lot of dashcam stuff and tutorials).
Just last week YouTube started autoplaying them at 1.5 speed. I was confused as Hell at first, then I got a little offended (because I like to have the illusion of choice), and then I realised it was handy as Hell.
YouTube fucks a lot of shit up, but this was a win in my opinion.
They really nailed it with having a guy whose first language clearly isn't English doing the tutorial. For some reason most tutorials on YouTube are done by guys whose accents make most of the information unintelligible.

From my experience it's downloading a tool that brings up command prompt with no indication of what you're supposed to do in there or worse, a tool that doesn't work because you have the wrong .netframework installed or you're missing some weird DLL file that the author of the video fails to mention.

I'm learning Unity and photoshop and there are too many of these tutorials. They go in depth about the simplest things, but skip through the hard parts at lightning speed, they don't speak and use Notepad or annotations, there's no sound, or the resolution of the video is so low that you have to go full screen every time to squint at what they are doing.
I appreciate that they want to share their knowledge and help newbies along, but most tutorials are unwatchable.

I don't know about other engineers, but I just dislike writing in general (aside from the occasional urge to WoT about some bullshit after being up for 30+ hours). I always feel awkward trying to convert the entirety of the concept I'm trying to get across into linear words that only ever half mean what I need them to. It's like I'm trying to build a gearbox out of popsicle sticks. I try to use brevity, but if I'm bothering to write about something of any relevance then I can't adequately cover it without providing supporting information (like I need to provide a firmware update along with the new software or something). I have to write 3-5 paragraphs at the same time because if I focus on one then I get stuck on how to say what I want to say without someone getting the wrong message (which always seems to happen) and then forget what I needed to say afterwards. That makes the result a bit clustered so once I'm like "Yes. I think I've finally covered everything necessary" I realize it doesn't read for shit and spend a while cut/pasting everything around in a different order that makes more sense and then readjusting the grammar that was broken in the process.
Words feel like banging sticks together. I just want to take my internal visualization of how the whole system in question works, the context you need for my understanding of that to be useful to you, and how it all fits into life the universe and everything, and take it out of my head and stick it directly in yours so we can move on with our day. I can't do that though because I have to use a bunch of little squiggles in a line!

Eventually I'm going to have to get a bunch of high end EEG and similar systems wired up with a machine-learning process managing the data and sifting out the various neural signals so they can build an expanding database matching the signals to specific things like imagined imagery and internal monologue. Ideally sensory bypass systems (cameras bypassing your ocular nerves, etc.) will be up to snuff at that point so someone else and I can get some nice wetware implants, start sending and receiving information filtered through our respective databases to form a sort of artificial telepathy, and actually have a real conversation that doesn't involve tripping over tongues as we try to transmit a daydream via audible telegraph.
Oh, and I meant the firmware thing metaphorically (fuck, should have spent a paragraph clarifying that), not that I'm doing documentation for software projects. I've always tried my best to utilize brevity, but I've noticed that if I don't throw in a bunch of information to provide an entire map of exactly what the content means then people invariably misconstrue it. People just answer what they wanted to hear me say instead of what I actually needed to say. So if I actually want to get any progress made I've got to try and imagine every way they'd possibly think I was talking about something else and head that off at the pass.
The problem with that is that no one else is used to it, so if I try to say something like "So if X... , Y... , and Z... are acting according to the parameters in J-K-L and not these other ways that people are recommending from M-N-O. And we're absolutely sure that A is being koalas and B is being alligators. Then... if we've accounted for all the noise, will T even U when we V?" where each of those things actually takes a bit longer to say then one of two things invariably happens. Whoever I'm communicating with butts in or ignores everything else and fixates on X and what they think I don't know about it. Or everyone is confused because I can't present it very well through speech and I just pare it down to "Will T even U when we V?" and get a response that ignores all the other alphabet and zoo factors forcing me to work back through them all again anyway.
Coder m'self, not an engineer, but I can tell those are Uni folks, because if someone said that sort of thing in the workplace, we'd get them a comfy chair and a drink, and probably consider a modest schedule of worship.

There's definitely some money in documentation. I was going for engineering, but I'd take some classes in the business school here and there, and one of my favorite classes was Entrepreneurial Finance taught by a guy who owned a ~$14M documentation company that had contracts with HP and the DoD to make product documentation, IED manuals, and whatnot. Last I heard he was getting ready to buy out his partner and acquire another similar company with a larger workforce and better employment contracts. So yeah, there's money there.
Well, I think that depends on the context. If you're not an engineer, it's going to be hard to write docs that are intended for other engineers (like a maintenance manual or something).
Technical writing is called 'technical' for a reason. And when it comes to complex projects, there really is nobody that knows it like the person or people that made it.

Video tutorials are utter garbage for pretty much everything software-related. 10 years ago every tutorial was text. Now that any moron can make a video, every fucking tutorial Google lists is crap like this video. Really annoying.
I absolutely despise video tutorials for programs.
It is nice when they have the video which accompanies the written instructions. Sometimes when I read the instructions something gets lost in translation, so it's beneficial to see someone actually perform one or two of the steps.

I think video tutorials are a great idea, educational videos in general when done properly are incredibly useful, but i agree that software tutorials lack a lot of effort. I'm a programmer so when i tried to learn Unity (from official unity tutorials) i got really annoyed at the writing the code part, that's not how you write code!, the guy would create everything in advance because he knows where he was going to, this is useless to learn anything since you don't really know the reason for anything until it is done, it is much better to do it in a systematic process where you find the flaws and possibly errors of what you are doing and go back to fix them, we would learn much more that way.

There are fantastic tuts out there, but they aren't free. Companies like Digital Tutors and Gnomon seek actually have quality standards for experience and communication, but they charge upwards of $50 per series, so you've got to be serious before buying one.
It's just a case of you get what you pay for. Most professionals aren't going to sink hours into planning, editing and possibly reshooting their tutorials for nothing.
I don't care how good the editing is, I just don't want to sit there pausing, unpausing, and rewinding a video 100 times. Video is completely retarded if you're doing anything software-related. Making a fucking simple step-by-step list like tutorials are supposed to be.
Step by step is fine if its listing how to work a menu or something basic. When its actual skill based stuff like editing or media creation, technique matters a hell of a lot more and that's something you follow along visually.
Exactly. And for more technically-oriented things like Photoshop or Blender (which I'm learning), it's INFURIATING to try to follow along with someone who spends five minutes basically talking to themselves, and then rushes through important stuff without explaining.
Another thing for which there's an absolute EPIDEMIC among YouTube tutorials is the phrase "go ahead." I wanted to learn how to put rust on a gas can model, but after the 90th "go ahead and" in the first second and a half (it felt), I just gave up. At one point the dude actually said "we can go ahead and go ahead and..." It hurt. It hurt me.
I started following an Unity tutorial from him. He started it like 2 years ago so I assumed it was finished by now. After 22 consecutive videos I realized there were no more videos and I couldn't continue the project.
I think he starts too many projects and takes too long updating them all.
Actually I like the official (?) Unity tutorials. Just recently I was thinking about how hard it must be to make something like that without a single mis-click or 'whoops, just made a typo' etc.

I'd recommend Lynda.com. It is subscription based so you have to pay, but i've learnt so much in such little time about so many different pieces of software. If it's a field you want to go into, It's definitely worth it.

Notepad tutorials make me rage. The video has a title, but they spend the first 2 minutes slowly typing out "Hello. Today I'm going to show you how to [insert title here]"
The internet is kind of fucked. We have the information age, but the information is low quality and there's no quality filter. There's voting, but that is also... shit, so it's useless.
You'll learn how to do stuff way faster and actually figure out how to do stuff on your own by simply reading the documentation.

Or say you want a map of hidden items ... nope! Gone are the days of a simple map with locations marked, even if it's not super accurate. Now it's just stupidly long videos of people taking far too long to say "Run down the corridor, turn left, look in the dark corner behind the tyre"

Traceroute 'tracks' the packets your send to a host, basically reporting the 'hops' it makes along the way. If you want to see how many systems your packets pass through before they get to the given host, there you go.
yeah, fucking seriously, we all have dialects/accent, but we are all capable of dressing up our language a bit when needed. No need to annoy the living shit out of your viewers with your fucking stupid dialect.
Thats not what Im saying at all; Im not even American. Im talking about regional dialects, whether they be from somewhere in the US or somewhere in the UK or wherever else. Everyone is capable of dressing up their language to a more normalised version if they want to or have to. There are certain situations where you just dont lay on your thickest dialect. Addressing a wide audience such as with a youtube video would be such a case where you might want to normalise your English a bit and not lay on your heavy regional dialect. Any native speaker is capable of doing this, to bigger or lesser degrees.
Is there a subreddit for these kinds of videos where it frustrates the fuck out of people? Where the video shows people trying to do things and keep failing over and over?

Note to anyone who makes tutorials with notepad: Don't. If you use any editing software at all, it will allow you to add text after you've made the video, so people don't have to watch you're typos.
Even if you don't have editing software, youtube has a magical feature called annotations. Put those on the video (you may need to write in the desc that people need their annotations turned on).

they can link to something that was just mentioned instead of having a huge list of links in the description. if they reference a video, they can put an annotation link that will go to a video.

First we're going to move the mouse just above the taskbar in the lower left-hand corner. If you don't know what a taskbar is, we can use google to demonstrate what it is.
"Best" probably would be subjective to your needs. If you needed to just simply put captions on a video, Windows Movie Maker is an excellent free source and very easy to use.
Otherwise you'd start getting into paid programs, where Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas are some of the top ones (I've no experience with them, but those are professional grade programs.)

I made it like a year or two ago, and did it quickly so I have no memory of the font. I did a quick look in photoshop and found the closest font to it would be Adobe Devanagari or Adobe Caslon Pro but they each have differences.

I've never used one that doesn't do it, any video editing software should be able to. When you insert text media overlay there should be an option about outline, make it black.
That said though I bet there's some free to use stuff out there that doesn't have it.

Those are usually the videos that'd do far better as a printed article, too.

I just don't bother watching tutorial videos that have no narration, or even worse, terrible loud music instead of narration. If I have to stare at your video without blinking to see all the steps, I'm not watching your video. If you think your voice sucks, then find something else to do rather than make tutorial videos.
I'm not sure why, but notepad tutorials have a certain charm for me. If they have shitty music I hate them, but the base is kinda nice for some reason.

i don't see the problem with it being typed in notepad. that usually just you can pause it 50% in when all the typing is done and read it, which is way quicker than scanning the video for steps.
You suck at photoshop is the greatest series of tutorials that exist on youtube. There hilarious, creative, and informative. Because of these videos, I significantly stepped up my photoshop game because it introduces and explains some of the most vital tools to photoshop effectively.
Any time I open a video and it's over 6 minutes long, I skip straight to the middle, to see if they've gotten anywhere, and if not I'll scrub forward in search of any sign that I should give a shit. Usually there is none, so I close the video and curse.
So many tutorials are improvised as if they themselves are learning the thing for the first time.
Plan out your tutorial. Know what you are going to say. Have everything prepared. Hell, write a script. If you are going to be importing or opening other things, have them open or already imported beforehand; no one wants to see you waste time clicking around in your folders.

My favourite thing about videos like this is the rambling on about completely irrelevant shit.
I got a new set of keycaps for a mechanical keyboard recently and made a video in this format to show them to a friend of mine who hadn't received his yet.
I once watched some kid do a tutorial on hooking up a capture card.
Halfway through the video the kid loses the capture card. Doesn't cut the video. Spends two whole minutes searching for it. Doesn't edit that out.
Only reason I stayed was to see how much further the video fell apart.

I was watching a mandatory Powerpoint "lesson" video that's offered by our employer. The series was taught by a middle aged woman with a terrible soccer mom-style layered hairdo. The sample slide was about Mt. St. Helen and she spent 7 minutes talking about Mt.St. Helen's history.
It was fucking torture.

Any music or other audio that isn't mostly full gain through most of the song will sound louder. The intent of "loudness equalization" is to compress the dynamic range of audio to nothing, making everything the same volume. This will make it sound awful on any half decent speakers/headphones.
Yeah, but I'd argue that when teaching someone something (the kind of people that don't know how to get to sound properties) you need to teach them the long way first. Shortcuts come later.

Yes much slower = bad, but TBH this is one of the best in a terrible genre. I've seen videos that take 4x longer to explain simpler concepts. Or videos that are not only longer, but completely forget to actually teach the only part that isn't blatently obvious to anyone who's ever used a computer.
My personal pet peve, being in computer repair, I can manage 99% of things, usually I just look for a video if it's the first time doing something and it looks like something is fragile and I'm worried of breaking something, watch the video, skip through 10 minutes of explanations for how to work a screwdriver and remove the 4 screws finally find the part I don't know.
"OK now this part is very touchy, you veer off even a bit and you just trashed a 40 dollar part, so do exactly as I do here, moves part out of frame, brings back into frame with step done, there we go.

Video tutorials take the least amount of time to produce but in turn waste thousands of people's time. Just write it down and take some screenshots so i can read it in 2 minutes instead of watching/skipping through a fucking 30 minute video.

Awful. On the opposite side of the spectrum, check this out - a nice 20 video playlist for Adobe Illustrator beginners - it helped me a LOT. He goes into great detail and explains everything well. That's how you do a tutorial.
Honestly if all video tutorials were this concise I would love it.
For example this didn't contain several minutes of the guy explaining the purpose of the video even though the title says explicitly covers what this video is about and I mean FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I KNOW WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THIS VIDEO IS THAT IS WHY I CLICKED ON IT.

It's a personal preference.
But from what I have dealt with in my other classes in computer science, everyone hates this. It may be good for some people but it is a pain in the ass for others.
BlueJ is a pain to work with. Apart from being annoying, a big problem with it is that it gets new programmers reliant on it. A lot of teachers just teach them to use BlueJ or similar programs, but never really explain how to program on, say, a notepad.

This is one of the things that have really gotten worse since the 90s. You used to be able to find tutorials for anything in text. It was so beautiful, you could just skim to the part you needed.
Now its almost impossible to find text tutorials. Videos video videos - which are like this. And when you need to go back to reference something later, you can't find anything.

The bane of my online tutorial use is when they say something along the lines of "OK now click the Tools dropdown and select '**', then click the '' tab, and then select the '****' radio button and click Advanced, pick Document Properties and click on ISO-Modified.
Or some shit like that. Usually at least one of those things I was supposed to click/select doesn't exist in my menu, sending me into a Google search rabbit hole for the next 20 minutes.

Yep. My professor would use his lynda account and have us sit in a room and watch the tutorial on a big screen, take down notes and then go to a computer and replicate what we just watched. I'm still trying to figure out what I paid for. I could've avoided the whole 4 years of college and gotten a lynda.com account and still ended up a part time retail worker. Live and Learn I guess.

With that particular professor, he used tutorials in Photoshop for beginners and advanced, Illustrator, in-design and corrugated packaging. I had other classes with him, but they were online, so I suspect that he just copy and pasted some quiz from a book. It was such a small college that the graphic design portion of the degree I got was instructed by a couple professors.
It's always just simply down to the editing and/or special preparation. If cooking shows were run in absolute real-time, and you had to wait for each step to be finished, you'd be there for hours.
Formula for a bad tutorial video:
Lead in with a massive explanation of why you're doing this video. Talk in depth about the history of the thing you're about to do and why it's relevant to you.
Include a lengthy shout out to your 64 closest YouTube friends. Make sure to include a plug for each of their channels as you mention them, and put big, capitalized annotations over the video linking to their more annoying videos.
Spend an inordinate amount of time setting everything up. If the program you're doing the tutorial for takes several minutes to open, ensure that no processes of it are running, so that it takes as long as possible to open.
When you're doing the actual tutorial part, especially any crucial details, go absolutely silent and don't explain a single thing.
Ensure there are no cuts whatsoever. Everything is uploaded live as you do it.
Formula for a good tutorial video:
Explain what the tutorial is about in two sentences or less.
If you need to give credit to someone else for using their instructions or resources, make a brief mention and put their full information in the video description.
Have at least three stages of your tutorial already set up in the program, minimized so they're off the screen.
As you do the tutorial, explain how to do a step, and then transition to the next stage of completion in your preloaded documents. Alternatively, make cuts in the video during long periods of exhaustive work. If you're really feeling fancy, do time-lapse to speed up gruelling, long portions.
Cut, cut, cut. Edit your video to keep the important parts, but cut any long awkward pauses, or waiting periods (like loading screens/progress bars). When done right, you can take literal hours of hard work and condense it down into a meaningful 5 minute tutorial video.
Don't forget to apologize every 10 seconds for minor stuff no one cares about. "Hey guys welcome to my tutorial about [simple bullshit] sorry I haven't uploaded a video for a while, I was so busy doing stuff and you know everyone has to do stuff from time to time. Also sorry that my hair looks so bad today, but I was at a party yesterday...[insert uninteresting details]. Alright let's get to work, sorry that my camera takes so weak resolutions but I don't have money to... [already 3min into the video and haven't even started with the tutorial]

Not really. I have a kick ass zucchini dish I can make in 45 minutes flat. It takes a few minutes prep before starting by having all the vegies lined up and ready with the sauces and other ingredients lined up. I would think that with decent recording and editing skills I could get it well under ten minutes.
With no editing, maybe at max one hour because it does take a few minutes to chop the vegies and pull the sauces out of the shelves. From start to finish I usually ran about 1 hour to get it to the table. My grandmother loved it so much she asked me to teach her how to make it. I tried twice to teach her and she insisted on BOILING the zucchini until it was completely dead.
Edit: but then, who wants to watch me chop onions and mince garlic? You do need to know the sequence of events and why. Also a three second shot of the ingredients going into the pan. Some elapsed time indicators for each step and voila!!! The dish is ready.

More people need to do this. If I'm looking up a tutorial, I want to just be shown what I need to do. If you're going to insist on dragging it out, at least just put the basic instructions in the video's description section so I can read that and then go watch for clarification if I absolutely have to.
The only thing I hate more is unboxing videos. I bought something awhile ago, but before I bought it I needed to know what sort of connector or adapter it had in it. Amazon didn't help me out any, and I couldn't find any review or anything that mentioned what all it came with. I figured an unboxing video would show me exactly what was in there. Nope!
I found a 20 minute long video which I figured was that long because it showed every possible thing that was in that box and then some. What it did have was some guy babbling about the quality of the Amazon box while rotating it around for the camera, fishing around for a knife, cutting the tape, carefully setting aside the bags of air and making more comments on those, another slow turning around of the product's box, fumbling with the tape over the opening flap, pulling the product itself out, removing the clear plastic shell, spinning that around for the camera, and not even paying attention to the cables, adapters, manual, warranty card, or anything else in the box. So after a good portion of an hour, what I came to find out isn't even shown and I know nothing about the contents of the box that I wasn't already aware of by reading the fucking Amazon description. Oh, and let's not forget the ever present 48 minute long outro of "Well, there's my unboxing. I'm going to stop talking now. Please don't forget to like and subscribe, and check out some of my other unboxings. I hope you enjoyed this. I'll let you go here, but it really helps out and your views are appreciated. I would like, subscribe, and comment the SHIT out of a channel that was quick dedicated to fast and efficient no-nonsense unboxings and tutorials. A 60-120 second video consisting of "Alright. It comes with this padded carrying case, two replacement sticks, a replacement d-pad, a detachable USB cable, and a manual. And yes, the D-pad and left analog stick can be interchanged. I started the channel originally because I forgot how to do some dumb thing like 3 or 4 times and finally I was like "Fuck it, I'll just make a video to explain it to myself" and then I realized it was a good idea. Eventually I'll put some real effort into it, but I've got a few other channel that take most of my free time focus right now.
I actually made a Video Production Tutorial channel BECAUSE I hated this shit so much, and I have like 100 thumbs up for every 1 thumbs down because my videos are like 1 minute long, straight to the point
I think the worst part is when they use some crappy music sound track or have no talking at all and just use music at a really shitty quality and always way to fucking loud
Need to have the comprehensive channel update with the author explaining why they haven't made videos lately, when you have never heard of this asshole before.

The worst ones are when they have a 30 secound intro showing their shitty logo while dub-step plays too loudly. But this video is soo accurate when it comes to shit we already know. I watched a video on how to wrap your knuckles for kick boxing. The video went for 9 fucking minutes. One thing he said was "This is the wrapping I'm going to use, you can buy these at any sporting store, walmart anywhere". Why the fuck would I be watching a video on how to wrap my knuckles with out already having the shit you wrap you knuckles in?

I find a lot of Diablo 3 tutorials like this. Just show me the build and what stat priorities I need! "If you see here, this enemy dies in like 1 second and this guy has this ability that your build doesn't deal well with so avoid it." Holy shit. Just tell me "So you need Wand of Woe and Ring of Grandeur and then you can get 3 pieces of Firebird and 5 pieces of Tal'Rasha."
Haha. Worst tutorial I came across that did this was a an old Rain AI for Unity tutorial... it was almost the only tutorial available, it was like 8 parts, 10 minutes each... and I swear after the first 3 or 4 videos the guy still hadn't got to anything Rain AI related! Just basic Unity stuff... make a new project, add some lights, add some character, build some terrain.. I just wanted to learn about Rain AI. It was infuriating :)

Even though I agree with so many of the comments here, I am grateful that tutorials exist because professors are often worse at explaining what they are doing, and the students who already know how to use the programs get frustrated when someone (ok, it's me) asks for clarification!
As someone who is VERY amateur and trying to get into animation, this is so true. When I watch a beginner video, it's not like I don't know basic functions of a computer or a program. This is definitely true about tutorials!
THIIIIIIIIIIIIS! I really wish tutorials... ESPECIALLY 3D modeling/setup tutorials wasn't always a damn video! Just give me the steps straight up without the damn fillers!

I once got so pissed off at a tutorial that took forever to get to the point that I made a comment along the lines that the tutor could have covered the subject in half of the time if he didn't fuck around with getting the shapes and colors of the test subject just right. Surprisingly, he didn't take it at all well.
Honestly that isn't what bothers me about tutorials. What bothers me about tutorials is when it leaves out steps that a nooby wouldn't know.
Cooking videos do this shit a LOT. For example they'll say something like, "blah blah blah turn the egg over then add it to the plate and put some "sauce" on top of the egg."

I think most of them start with good intentions then they get tired and start to skip stuff. Usually by the time you're learning stuff that matters, the tutorial guy is bored and want to get over with it. They end up half-assing the only part you need
I feel like if I ever made a YouTube channel dedicated to tutorials or simply containing tutorials I would just dive right into the instructions and then once the last step is concluded the video would end. If your content is good enough then people will like, subscribe, and comment without you having to remind or request.
As someone who takes the time to learn on their own and on occasion uses online tutorials this is fucking spot on, the one thing they forgot is when it's a 12 year old yelling into their mic.

as an IT person video tutorials are the bane of my fucking existence. If it was a properly setup text tutorial with images, I could search for the relevant part and get what I need. But everyone has to be a you tuber now for those sweet sweet thumbs up so instead I have to sit through a video that is about 3/4 useless to me. I'm not a fan of something useful being replaced by something new that doesn't do as good a job.
At least I can put them on 2X speed now.

In the other hand when you see a real very informative tutorial that actually help you do the task you are trying to learn, you will always see someone in the comment saying he don't know how to install the program or whatever very basic shit. So I can understand those kind of tutorial who will explain completely useless stuff on there videos

Agreed. The issue with tutorials is they have to be accessible to all experience levels. Some people may not know how to add a new layer for example. Whilst to a experienced photoshopper this is mind numbingly boring detail. So it's about finding the right balance. Personally I don't mind them going into detail as long as they do just that.. and don't spend time waffling on about it and saying "errr" between every other word.

At one point in my life I wanted to learn how to make music (EDM type stuff) in Fruity Loops and I diligently watched 18-20 hours of tutorials. All of the necessary information in all of those videos could have been condensed to about 2-3 hours of total time. People that like to do these types of videos love to hear themselves talk and many tutorials are less about sharing knowledge and more like grandstanding to say "look at me, look at how much I know, I am so smart."
My problem with tutorials is that inevitably the tutorial maker has a lot of customisations on their software and don't tell us what, and none of their shit applies to anyone else using the software, specially as a fresh user.

Please, future tutorial makers, write the tutorial down in text! Then, use pictures and short videos to illustrate your steps.
The problem is, these tutorials are made for absolute newbies to photoshop. Anyone who's done a media degree in University will know photoshop like the back of their hand and will find the click by click instruction tedious and annoying.
For those willing to look for it, there are better resources than youtube.
The worst ones are when people constantly sniff throughout the entire video, and speak like they are extremely congested. You're telling me the best time you could have picked to record your "Pop-Art" tutorial was when you came down with the flu? Jesus Christ, man! Blow your nose!

I have tried to learn how to do things in GIMP, and it usually is this frustrating. One thing that gets me is they always have customized set ups. You are following along, and they say "now you just click the layers box here..." or something, and the layers box isn't there, because you have the default layout, and you have no idea how to put it there. Click layers on the menu bar, and it isn't the same as the tool he is using. Thanks for wasting my time.

I don't understand the point of photoshop tutorials like this. Like, I guess it's helpful if you're looking for that exact image of the word fire on fire, but besides that it doesn't teach you anything at all about photoshop, you just follow the steps and get the end product.

I really hate photoshop type tutorials, because its an artform. The goal isn't to show people the steps to reproduce one effect, it should be showing them the thought process behind the effects.
Classic cliche is that you need to teach them how to fish, not just give them a fish.
Yeah I ran into tutorial irritation myself this weekend. Was learning Unity, dood was a bit too fast in spots but I noticed he'd occasionally do something and not explain himself completely. Noticed this one where he quickly removes a line just before testing, you'd miss it if you weren't looking (at 3:23)
My favorite are the game walkthroughs, where half the video is the creator figuring out how to do the quest.

To everyone that posts how to videos on YouTube; I really do appreciate the time and effort it takes to make the video. When as a viewer you're standing out in a garage or in the woods with spotty reception, all hot and sweaty trying to fix something, all the fluff in a video can make you want to claw your eyes out. Especially after all the adds.
If you know so fucking much about mics, why don't you get a proper one and learn how to use it?

Earlier today I was searching for ways to make a game I downloaded run more smoothly. I'm looking for INI tweaks, launch options and the like. I see a four-minute video on the subject so I watch the whole thing which could be summed up as 'go to options menu and set graphics to low'. For the entire last minute of the video the whole screen had 'LETS SMASH THAT 10000 LIKE GOAL!' overlaid onto it. Its okay, he said you only need the mouse to click new doc. You can also do it with your keyboard using the shortcut Ctrl+N. Or if you have a mac you can also do it with CMD+N
If you have linux then you will first need to go to your local BestBuy, Wal_Mart, Apple Store, Target, or some other store that sells electronics like OfficeMax, Staples, ect. Afterwards, talk to a sales associate about how you need a computer for photoshop and show them a picture of the effect you're trying to recreate.
Once you get the computer set up, use the mouse.

You're wrong unless you're talking about the iPhone. Dolphin Browser on Android allows you to change User Agent to Desktop in Advanced Settings. You may have to sideload Flash as well.

Well yeah, obviously if you use a Desktop user agent to view the full YouTube website in a browser then you can change the speed, but that's not what they mean. You can do that on an iPhone too.
When people say mobile they mean the YouTube app, which you can't change the speed on.

If you're on Android, you could try BSPlayer-- Install it, and instead of playing the video when you find it in the YT app, "Share" it to BSPlayer. Then, you can use the little speedometer icon on the right side to change the speed. (It also supports really intuitive gestures and volume levels over 100%. I recommend it.)
Now, if someone could tell me how to do it on a Roku...

Yeah. I've never used the desktop version, though it still exists, but the Android version is pretty good. It's kind of a Coke/Pepsi comparison with something like MXPlayer on Android-- mostly similar, but there are little differences to tip the scales one way or the other depending on what you like.

On Android, you can use the mobile version of Firefox and a plugin that lets you control the video speed. This also means you can block ads with uBlock Origin, too.

Best function ever, indeed. I actually found a Firefox addon that lets you set it as high as you want. Some videos, I can ramp up to 2.5x or even 3x and still get the gist, though those are mostly people talking through code they're writing on-screen, so it's usually pretty obvious.
(I'm on a different computer, so unfortunately I don't have the name of the addon handy. Your Google's as good as mine.)

Your next step is realizing the 25% rule: Literally every video of youtube "starts" at around 1/3 - 1/4 of its length. So next time you watch a video, set it to x1.5 or x2 whatever suits you, and just skip 25% of its length forward to reach to the point information is becoming relevant.

So I've been doing the 1.5 or 2.0 speed thing for a good few months, as a way to get through more videos in a shorter time (I watch a lot of dashcam stuff and tutorials).
Just last week YouTube started autoplaying them at 1.5 speed. I was confused as Hell at first, then I got a little offended (because I like to have the illusion of choice), and then I realised it was handy as Hell.
YouTube fucks a lot of shit up, but this was a win in my opinion.

From my experience it's downloading a tool that brings up command prompt with no indication of what you're supposed to do in there or worse, a tool that doesn't work because you have the wrong .netframework installed or you're missing some weird DLL file that the author of the video fails to mention.

I'm learning Unity and photoshop and there are too many of these tutorials. They go in depth about the simplest things, but skip through the hard parts at lightning speed, they don't speak and use Notepad or annotations, there's no sound, or the resolution of the video is so low that you have to go full screen every time to squint at what they are doing.
I appreciate that they want to share their knowledge and help newbies along, but most tutorials are unwatchable.

I don't know about other engineers, but I just dislike writing in general (aside from the occasional urge to WoT about some bullshit after being up for 30+ hours). I always feel awkward trying to convert the entirety of the concept I'm trying to get across into linear words that only ever half mean what I need them to. It's like I'm trying to build a gearbox out of popsicle sticks. I try to use brevity, but if I'm bothering to write about something of any relevance then I can't adequately cover it without providing supporting information (like I need to provide a firmware update along with the new software or something). I have to write 3-5 paragraphs at the same time because if I focus on one then I get stuck on how to say what I want to say without someone getting the wrong message (which always seems to happen) and then forget what I needed to say afterwards. That makes the result a bit clustered so once I'm like "Yes. I think I've finally covered everything necessary" I realize it doesn't read for shit and spend a while cut/pasting everything around in a different order that makes more sense and then readjusting the grammar that was broken in the process.
Words feel like banging sticks together. I just want to take my internal visualization of how the whole system in question works, the context you need for my understanding of that to be useful to you, and how it all fits into life the universe and everything, and take it out of my head and stick it directly in yours so we can move on with our day. I can't do that though because I have to use a bunch of little squiggles in a line!

Eventually I'm going to have to get a bunch of high end EEG and similar systems wired up with a machine-learning process managing the data and sifting out the various neural signals so they can build an expanding database matching the signals to specific things like imagined imagery and internal monologue. Ideally sensory bypass systems (cameras bypassing your ocular nerves, etc.) will be up to snuff at that point so someone else and I can get some nice wetware implants, start sending and receiving information filtered through our respective databases to form a sort of artificial telepathy, and actually have a real conversation that doesn't involve tripping over tongues as we try to transmit a daydream via audible telegraph.
Oh, and I meant the firmware thing metaphorically (fuck, should have spent a paragraph clarifying that), not that I'm doing documentation for software projects. I've always tried my best to utilize brevity, but I've noticed that if I don't throw in a bunch of information to provide an entire map of exactly what the content means then people invariably misconstrue it. People just answer what they wanted to hear me say instead of what I actually needed to say. So if I actually want to get any progress made I've got to try and imagine every way they'd possibly think I was talking about something else and head that off at the pass.
The problem with that is that no one else is used to it, so if I try to say something like "So if X... , Y... , and Z... are acting according to the parameters in J-K-L and not these other ways that people are recommending from M-N-O. And we're absolutely sure that A is being koalas and B is being alligators. Then... if we've accounted for all the noise, will T even U when we V?" where each of those things actually takes a bit longer to say then one of two things invariably happens. Whoever I'm communicating with butts in or ignores everything else and fixates on X and what they think I don't know about it. Or everyone is confused because I can't present it very well through speech and I just pare it down to "Will T even U when we V?" and get a response that ignores all the other alphabet and zoo factors forcing me to work back through them all again anyway.

There's definitely some money in documentation. I was going for engineering, but I'd take some classes in the business school here and there, and one of my favorite classes was Entrepreneurial Finance taught by a guy who owned a ~$14M documentation company that had contracts with HP and the DoD to make product documentation, IED manuals, and whatnot. Last I heard he was getting ready to buy out his partner and acquire another similar company with a larger workforce and better employment contracts. So yeah, there's money there.

Well, I think that depends on the context. If you're not an engineer, it's going to be hard to write docs that are intended for other engineers (like a maintenance manual or something).
Technical writing is called 'technical' for a reason. And when it comes to complex projects, there really is nobody that knows it like the person or people that made it.

I think video tutorials are a great idea, educational videos in general when done properly are incredibly useful, but i agree that software tutorials lack a lot of effort. I'm a programmer so when i tried to learn Unity (from official unity tutorials) i got really annoyed at the writing the code part, that's not how you write code!, the guy would create everything in advance because he knows where he was going to, this is useless to learn anything since you don't really know the reason for anything until it is done, it is much better to do it in a systematic process where you find the flaws and possibly errors of what you are doing and go back to fix them, we would learn much more that way.

There are fantastic tuts out there, but they aren't free. Companies like Digital Tutors and Gnomon seek actually have quality standards for experience and communication, but they charge upwards of $50 per series, so you've got to be serious before buying one.
It's just a case of you get what you pay for. Most professionals aren't going to sink hours into planning, editing and possibly reshooting their tutorials for nothing.

Exactly. And for more technically-oriented things like Photoshop or Blender (which I'm learning), it's INFURIATING to try to follow along with someone who spends five minutes basically talking to themselves, and then rushes through important stuff without explaining.
Another thing for which there's an absolute EPIDEMIC among YouTube tutorials is the phrase "go ahead." I wanted to learn how to put rust on a gas can model, but after the 90th "go ahead and" in the first second and a half (it felt), I just gave up. At one point the dude actually said "we can go ahead and go ahead and..." It hurt. It hurt me.

Traceroute 'tracks' the packets your send to a host, basically reporting the 'hops' it makes along the way. If you want to see how many systems your packets pass through before they get to the given host, there you go.

Thats not what Im saying at all; Im not even American. Im talking about regional dialects, whether they be from somewhere in the US or somewhere in the UK or wherever else. Everyone is capable of dressing up their language to a more normalised version if they want to or have to. There are certain situations where you just dont lay on your thickest dialect. Addressing a wide audience such as with a youtube video would be such a case where you might want to normalise your English a bit and not lay on your heavy regional dialect. Any native speaker is capable of doing this, to bigger or lesser degrees.

Note to anyone who makes tutorials with notepad: Don't. If you use any editing software at all, it will allow you to add text after you've made the video, so people don't have to watch you're typos.
Even if you don't have editing software, youtube has a magical feature called annotations. Put those on the video (you may need to write in the desc that people need their annotations turned on).

"Best" probably would be subjective to your needs. If you needed to just simply put captions on a video, Windows Movie Maker is an excellent free source and very easy to use.
Otherwise you'd start getting into paid programs, where Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas are some of the top ones (I've no experience with them, but those are professional grade programs.)

I made it like a year or two ago, and did it quickly so I have no memory of the font. I did a quick look in photoshop and found the closest font to it would be Adobe Devanagari or Adobe Caslon Pro but they each have differences.

I've never used one that doesn't do it, any video editing software should be able to. When you insert text media overlay there should be an option about outline, make it black.
That said though I bet there's some free to use stuff out there that doesn't have it.

Be concise! Get to the point! Don't dawdle on stupid shit! Your tutorial should be, at most, 4 minutes. Preferably 2 minutes.

So many tutorials are improvised as if they themselves are learning the thing for the first time.
Plan out your tutorial. Know what you are going to say. Have everything prepared. Hell, write a script. If you are going to be importing or opening other things, have them open or already imported beforehand; no one wants to see you waste time clicking around in your folders.

I once watched some kid do a tutorial on hooking up a capture card.
Halfway through the video the kid loses the capture card. Doesn't cut the video. Spends two whole minutes searching for it. Doesn't edit that out.
Only reason I stayed was to see how much further the video fell apart.

Any music or other audio that isn't mostly full gain through most of the song will sound louder. The intent of "loudness equalization" is to compress the dynamic range of audio to nothing, making everything the same volume. This will make it sound awful on any half decent speakers/headphones.

Yes much slower = bad, but TBH this is one of the best in a terrible genre. I've seen videos that take 4x longer to explain simpler concepts. Or videos that are not only longer, but completely forget to actually teach the only part that isn't blatently obvious to anyone who's ever used a computer.
My personal pet peve, being in computer repair, I can manage 99% of things, usually I just look for a video if it's the first time doing something and it looks like something is fragile and I'm worried of breaking something, watch the video, skip through 10 minutes of explanations for how to work a screwdriver and remove the 4 screws finally find the part I don't know.
"OK now this part is very touchy, you veer off even a bit and you just trashed a 40 dollar part, so do exactly as I do here, moves part out of frame, brings back into frame with step done, there we go.

BlueJ is a pain to work with. Apart from being annoying, a big problem with it is that it gets new programmers reliant on it. A lot of teachers just teach them to use BlueJ or similar programs, but never really explain how to program on, say, a notepad.

This is one of the things that have really gotten worse since the 90s. You used to be able to find tutorials for anything in text. It was so beautiful, you could just skim to the part you needed.
Now its almost impossible to find text tutorials. Videos video videos - which are like this. And when you need to go back to reference something later, you can't find anything.

The bane of my online tutorial use is when they say something along the lines of "OK now click the Tools dropdown and select '**', then click the '' tab, and then select the '****' radio button and click Advanced, pick Document Properties and click on ISO-Modified.

Yep. My professor would use his lynda account and have us sit in a room and watch the tutorial on a big screen, take down notes and then go to a computer and replicate what we just watched. I'm still trying to figure out what I paid for. I could've avoided the whole 4 years of college and gotten a lynda.com account and still ended up a part time retail worker. Live and Learn I guess.

With that particular professor, he used tutorials in Photoshop for beginners and advanced, Illustrator, in-design and corrugated packaging. I had other classes with him, but they were online, so I suspect that he just copy and pasted some quiz from a book. It was such a small college that the graphic design portion of the degree I got was instructed by a couple professors.

Not really. I have a kick ass zucchini dish I can make in 45 minutes flat. It takes a few minutes prep before starting by having all the vegies lined up and ready with the sauces and other ingredients lined up. I would think that with decent recording and editing skills I could get it well under ten minutes.
With no editing, maybe at max one hour because it does take a few minutes to chop the vegies and pull the sauces out of the shelves. From start to finish I usually ran about 1 hour to get it to the table. My grandmother loved it so much she asked me to teach her how to make it. I tried twice to teach her and she insisted on BOILING the zucchini until it was completely dead.
Edit: but then, who wants to watch me chop onions and mince garlic? You do need to know the sequence of events and why. Also a three second shot of the ingredients going into the pan. Some elapsed time indicators for each step and voila!!! The dish is ready.
BTW, thanks for great explanation. I wish everyone who made a tutorial actually followed your advice.

More people need to do this. If I'm looking up a tutorial, I want to just be shown what I need to do. If you're going to insist on dragging it out, at least just put the basic instructions in the video's description section so I can read that and then go watch for clarification if I absolutely have to.
The only thing I hate more is unboxing videos. I bought something awhile ago, but before I bought it I needed to know what sort of connector or adapter it had in it. Amazon didn't help me out any, and I couldn't find any review or anything that mentioned what all it came with. I figured an unboxing video would show me exactly what was in there. Nope!
I found a 20 minute long video which I figured was that long because it showed every possible thing that was in that box and then some. What it did have was some guy babbling about the quality of the Amazon box while rotating it around for the camera, fishing around for a knife, cutting the tape, carefully setting aside the bags of air and making more comments on those, another slow turning around of the product's box, fumbling with the tape over the opening flap, pulling the product itself out, removing the clear plastic shell, spinning that around for the camera, and not even paying attention to the cables, adapters, manual, warranty card, or anything else in the box. So after a good portion of an hour, what I came to find out isn't even shown and I know nothing about the contents of the box that I wasn't already aware of by reading the fucking Amazon description. Oh, and let's not forget the ever present 48 minute long outro of "Well, there's my unboxing. I'm going to stop talking now. Please don't forget to like and subscribe, and check out some of my other unboxings. I hope you enjoyed this. I'll let you go here, but it really helps out and your views are appreciated. So anyways, that's about it, but also, don't forget to let me know down there in the comments what else you want to see me unbox. I would like, subscribe, and comment the SHIT out of a channel that was quick dedicated to fast and efficient no-nonsense unboxings and tutorials. A 60-120 second video consisting of "Alright. Here we have the MLG Pro Xbox 360 controller." open box, dump contents on table "Here's the controller itself, standard 360 layout. It comes with this padded carrying case, two replacement sticks, a replacement d-pad, a detachable USB cable, and a manual. And yes, the D-pad and left analog stick can be interchanged. There you go, that's what you get."

Good idea, I'll start doing some unboxing videos on the channel too.
I started the channel originally because I forgot how to do some dumb thing like 3 or 4 times and finally I was like "Fuck it, I'll just make a video to explain it to myself" and then I realized it was a good idea. Eventually I'll put some real effort into it, but I've got a few other channel that take most of my free time focus right now.

The worst ones are when they have a 30 secound intro showing their shitty logo while dub-step plays too loudly. But this video is soo accurate when it comes to shit we already know. I watched a video on how to wrap your knuckles for kick boxing. The video went for 9 fucking minutes. One thing he said was "This is the wrapping I'm going to use, you can buy these at any sporting store, walmart anywhere". Worst tutorial I came across that did this was a an old Rain AI for Unity tutorial... it was almost the only tutorial available, it was like 8 parts, 10 minutes each... and I swear after the first 3 or 4 videos the guy still hadn't got to anything Rain AI related! Just basic Unity stuff... make a new project, add some lights, add some character, build some terrain.. I just wanted to learn about Rain AI. It was infuriating :)

I once got so pissed off at a tutorial that took forever to get to the point that I made a comment along the lines that the tutor could have covered the subject in half of the time if he didn't fuck around with getting the shapes and colors of the test subject just right. If someone asks him a question, he would answer from the smallest thing like he thinks you are a retard or something.
For example, if someone asks what is 52!+0, he would start the explanation with like "so you know what is this?This is a 0."

Honestly that isn't what bothers me about tutorials. What bothers me about tutorials is when it leaves out steps that a nooby wouldn't know.
Cooking videos do this shit a LOT. For example they'll say something like, "blah blah blah turn the egg over then add it to the plate and put some "sauce" on top of the egg."

as an IT person video tutorials are the bane of my fucking existence. If it was a properly setup text tutorial with images, I could search for the relevant part and get what I need. But everyone has to be a you tuber now for those sweet sweet thumbs up so instead I have to sit through a video that is about 3/4 useless to me. I'm not a fan of something useful being replaced by something new that doesn't do as good a job.
At least I can put them on 2X speed now.

In the other hand when you see a real very informative tutorial that actually help you do the task you are trying to learn, you will always see someone in the comment saying he don't know how to install the program or whatever very basic shit. So I can understand those kind of tutorial who will explain completely useless stuff on there videos

Agreed. The issue with tutorials is they have to be accessible to all experience levels. Some people may not know how to add a new layer for example. Whilst to a experienced photoshopper this is mind numbingly boring detail. So it's about finding the right balance. Personally I don't mind them going into detail as long as they do just that.. and don't spend time waffling on about it and saying "errr" between every other word.

At one point in my life I wanted to learn how to make music (EDM type stuff) in Fruity Loops and I diligently watched 18-20 hours of tutorials. All of the necessary information in all of those videos could have been condensed to about 2-3 hours of total time. People that like to do these types of videos love to hear themselves talk and many tutorials are less about sharing knowledge and more like grandstanding to say "look at me, look at how much I know, I am so smart."

My problem with tutorials is that inevitably the tutorial maker has a lot of customisations on their software and don't tell us what, and none of their shit applies to anyone else using the software, specially as a fresh user.

The problem is, these tutorials are made for absolute newbies to photoshop. Anyone who's done a media degree in University will know photoshop like the back of their hand and will find the click by click instruction tedious and annoying.
For those willing to look for it, there are better resources than youtube.

I have tried to learn how to do things in GIMP, and it usually is this frustrating. One thing that gets me is they always have customized set ups. You are following along, and they say "now you just click the layers box here..." or something, and the layers box isn't there, because you have the default layout, and you have no idea how to put it there. Click layers on the menu bar, and it isn't the same as the tool he is using. Thanks for wasting my time.

I don't understand the point of photoshop tutorials like this. Like, I guess it's helpful if you're looking for that exact image of the word fire on fire, but besides that it doesn't teach you anything at all about photoshop, you just follow the steps and get the end product.

I really hate photoshop type tutorials, because its an artform. The goal isn't to show people the steps to reproduce one effect, it should be showing them the thought process behind the effects.
Classic cliche is that you need to teach them how to fish, not just give them a fish.

Yeah I ran into tutorial irritation myself this weekend. Was learning Unity, dood was a bit too fast in spots but I noticed he'd occasionally do something and not explain himself completely. Noticed this one where he quickly removes a line just before testing, you'd miss it if you weren't looking (at 3:23)

To everyone that posts how to videos on YouTube; I really do appreciate the time and effort it takes to make the video. When as a viewer you're standing out in a garage or in the woods with spotty reception, all hot and sweaty trying to fix something, all the fluff in a video can make you want to claw your eyes out. Especially after all the adds.
