HOLY SHIT youโre right, I had to read a book like that once in high school. It was about a society where everyone is colorblind but the main character can see colors and escapes with his little brother
Fuck what was that book called? It made for a creepy dystopia but I didnโt really like the ways it was written when I read it
The Giver, which I also read for a school thing, but in middle school. I kinda liked it, actually. Fucking weird, but I liked it. Never read the rest of the series though.
Yeah I wasnโt into dystopia stuff at the time and I read it a few years before there were suddenly lots of dystopian movies... but patterns of dystopian movies happen like once a decade
He didnโt escape because of seeing color, he escaped because itโs a dystopia. While no one else could see color, that didnโt matter. The color was just a metaphor. The real issues the book mentioned were stuff like assigned jobs, strict universal schedules, population control through non consensual euthanasia, and lack of communication to other towns, in which most people were trapped. All that shit and more is what made it a dystopia, and ergo worth escaping.
She like dreaming of a better world when she has to carry a knife while walking on down to the bread line for her insufficient meal to feed her far younger sibling and elderly parent
Having a half a spine when nobody around her seems to have one at all is the trademark of all YA novel heros.
She's so normal and relatable - unfortunately to make this special everyone else needs to be a hollowed out shell to undercut the mediocrity of the protagonist.
now that I think about it, a lot of โnormalโ traits were once considered unacceptable. like being left handed.
but the problem here is that the special trait of these characters is almost always something good, useful or something they would end up being grateful for having.
I remember a post on r/writingprompts where the prompt was to take your least favorite clichรฉ and grossly exaggerate it. In one story, almost every sentence and line of dialogue brought up the color of her eyes.
Hold up I'm so sold on a girl who defeats a corrupt government and then turns into a mermaid. Does she tell the boys fighting her "fuck off I love the sea"???? I'm very invested.
Man I really liked the first two books too, thought it was going to be a pretty good series....
Then it took a dive off a cliff, I realised the Author had absolutely no fucking clue where he was going with the story, was making it up as he was going along, and just choosing whatever sounded cool.
Then I realised he doesn't actually write anything and only uses ghostwriters....
Ghost writers suck because you always gotta deal with their unfinished bussiness before they'll write for you and 99 out of a hundred times its full of so many spelling errors you'll spend more time editing than if you had written it yourself
Yup. Until the bird kids all get weird powers. Angel gets a million of them she never uses. I never read long enough for Max to get them too, but I guess she does.

The second boys name was like. Dylan or something. And he was a clone of a dead boy who had wings grafted onto him and was made to be the perfect "mate" for a 15 y/o girl. Fun times!
No the boys go to the ocean searching for broken hearted sirens and because of the sirens curse they can trade spots now the two with no memories only remember their love for a distorted face
Rangers apprentice by John Flanagan. There's roughly 10 books in the main series and 5 in the spinoff series.
It's about an orphan in a medieval setting who thinks he has no hirable skills and ends up getting recruited to be trained as part of one of the kingdoms most elite forces. Very little romance to be had, lots of action, and well thought out scenarios. Individual books are relatively short, but I think the author does a good job of telling the story.

That Australia shit! I forgot about that, I started it like 6 years ago, I need to go back they were great!
If you like the kinda of characters Brandon Sanderson writes you may like those books too. I only play the WH40k role playing games, which use the inquisition a decent amount and are based on amazing semitropy but great developed characters from Eisenhorn and later series.
Sorry haha, Warhammer 40k was originally a tabletop wargame with really expensive miniatures that you can paint. Then they wrote a bunch of lore about it for 30 years and it branches out to lots of other media, eventually they made like 5 role playing games and probably more than 50 books. Basically itโs the year 40k and humanity is under a fascist/feudal/xenophobic regime that is โnecessaryโ to keep it alive from a bunch of aliens and daemons and the inquisition are the ones given carte Blanche to do what has to be done to save the imperium, up to and including keeping their own in check, use otherwise proscribed materials too dangerous for humans, and eliminating planets of their own citizens for the greater good.
They also have my favorite character arc - they all start out puritanical but if they are good enough to survive they live to see all their friends die and will use whatever means necessary to see their view of the greater good be accomplished.
The biggest one ArchWarhammer is definitely not the best influence on the community even if they are informative. Basically some people donโt get the nuance and purpose of the fiction as a critique -Including some of its writers - But I donโt hold it against the fiction. Itโs like Star Wars, Jedi are the good guys except theyโre not good people

Ugh, this was my favorite series as a kid, until the beginning of one of the last books, I think 8 or 9, where something really big happened and it PISSED ME OFF. Prepare to have your heart broken.
Something awful! I remember the feeling and remember wanting to unread but canโt remember WHAT. And so I guess my 12 year old self actually got what they wanted.

You're really lucky then, don't go back and read it, I wish I couldn't remember it either.
Aww common as if "orphan gets pushed into some elite position because of skillz they never knew they had" isn't also a laughable trope.
The other is "orphan from nothing finds out terrible secret that they are actually special, royalty and super important." And their parents aren't actually dead. No, at least one of them is either a secret mentor or evil to vanquish.
Oh SHIT I read a few of those when I was younger! All I remember now is something about "nobody ever looks up" and some vague stuff about sneaking/stealing in a kitchen. I need to add those to the to-read list now, thank you.
I always considered the first four books the original story of Ranger's Apprentice. I felt that book 5 onward was weak by comparison, to the point that I never got around to book 10
The first few are about growth, the latter ones are more about his relationships, so I can see where you're coming from. I recommend reading the offshoot of it called brotherband chronicles. It gives a lot more of the growth feeling than rangers apprentice, and feels more well written imo.
Or the bitch becomes one of her best friends when she realizes girl wasnโt trying to steal bitchโs bf, the dude just couldnโt stop steering with his dick
I just described all YA films. (Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent, etc.) The character is designed as plain and shy because that's how most people who read novels see themselves, and it's easy for the teenage girls reading it to project themselves into that type of character. And two boys fight over the girl because this is how the author wishes men saw her.
I'll forgive them because there's no logical reason why olive skin would be prominent in Appalachia even a few generations down the road and through wars while remaining somewhat consistent in traditions with the current people of that area (songs, hunting/trapping techniques, white liquor/moonshine). That's a shitty descriptor from the author more than anything.
I thought it was established that part of the dystopian setting was having populations segregated by race? So everyone in district 11 was black, and everyone in district 12 was of originally native American or Roma decent (after having their original culture and history purged, of course). Bit of subtle worldbuilding there.
I assumed Katniss had Native American ancestry as well. That being said, I'm still mad over their casting of Woody Harrelson. He was nothing close to what Haymitch was described.
Ughh! Divergent. I watched the first one to see what all the nonsense was about (illegal download, no way I was paying money for it). OMFG that movie is cliche garbage.
All these jokes people are making in this thread is LITERALLY what is happening in that movie.
To be fair, in the book her avatar is described as pretty, and her real life appearance is identical with the exception of a port wine stain on her face.
Her avatar had a pretty face, but it wasnโt unnaturally perfect. In the OASIS, you got used to seeing freakishly beautiful faces on everyone. But Art3misโs features didnโt look as though theyโd been selected from a beauty drop-down menu on some avatar creation template. Her face had the distinctive look of a real personโs, as if her true features had been scanned in and mapped onto her avatar. Big hazel eyes, rounded cheekbones, a pointy chin, and a perpetual smirk. I found her unbearably attractive.

RPO was hot garbage all the way through though. Cute scenery, and it had 80s nostalgia ... but plot and characters :(. I heard the book was basically the same.
Personally I thought the book was super trashy and it felt like self insert fanfiction to me. I really hated the MC lmao he was pretty much a gary stu to the highest degree
tbh, I think the movie was better than the book. at least in the movie it didnโt spend a couple chapters talking about his fapping habits.

It's also one of the book's few world building moments. Along with that one where he buys a gun from a vending machine in a world that may or may not be teetering on the edge of collapse.

One good thing to come out of that book was introducing me to the phrase "rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic"
The book was considerably different and I liked it much more even though there was a lot of name dropping of video games and such.
zherok ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 07:11:06 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Cline doesn't trust the reader to get his references despite the entire premise of the book being about nostalgia for said references.
He will describe to you a thing that can only be the Delorean from Back to the Future (because that's the only Delorean anyone knows about) and he'll still tell you that it's the Delorean from Back to the future afterward.
I don't begrudge anyone their nostalgia, I love all sorts of things from the 80's. But I have a hard time feeling that Cline does, because he gives so little care as to WHY things are supposed to be cool. Also the number of times he has a character recite an entire movie's script from memory says a lot about what he thinks liking something means.
True. Itโs been a while since I read the book. I think there was a lot of potential with the world he built and that was enough for me to overlook the actual plot.
Still, nice of them to show that even if you have the hideous deformity of a barley-visible mark on part of your face, a creepy condescending nice guy could still love you!

See, in this line, a character uses both caps and an exclamation sign when shouting. That is unusual, and only used seven times in the book, because something really surprising happened.
It's just I have no idea why it was in the books though.
There was no thematic, plot or character reason for it to happen.
One of the three has no chemistry with the guy and another is just absent for basically the entire story.
The one possible explanation I can think of is that it just shows how much being a Ta'veren fucks with everyone around you.
You hit it on the nose. When youโre so Taโveren that you make the other two Taโveren see you as a headache inducing hallucination just by thinking of your name then anything significant in your life like idk the most influential and impactful love affairs of your life we gonna go sideways in a hurry. I also have to mention that if Hawkwing was Taโveren then Mat and Perrin are Taโveren2 and Rand is Taโvereninfinity.

I'm gonna be honest, looking back, none of them had great chemistry. Heck, Aviendha opened a gate to the other side of the wold and fell in a freezing river just to get away from him.
But that was just a classic tsundere move.
Out of the three Aviendha was the only one who had the time to develop an actual relationship that didn't seem completely artificial.

I'm polyamorous myself and I feel like that series set the stage for it way before I ever admitted it to myself. Like you all love each other, what the fuck is the problem exactly? And there wasn't a problem! it's fucking great and I can no longer stand watching these contrived love triangle situations. Just fucking confess to both and hook up with whichever one doesn't mind sharing you. Easy as that
As a fellow poly person, these romantic dilemmas in stories have always bothered me. Like you have all these feelings for and expirences with the one person which don't just vanish when you decide to be with the other.
Since I couldn't get past book 9, does this mean that the two woman who became desert sisters or whatever so they could marry rand started hooking up?
I really don't trust Jordan to write lesbian fic in a respectful, non-voyeuristic manner, but that would make the scenario better, less gross. I was super uncomfortable with his view on polygamy (two women just love one man! There's absolutely no power dynamic problems here, nope).
Tenshik ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:28:02 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Concerns about power dynamics and social tropes have always seemed to be disrespectful of the individual to me. Everyone's circumstances and emotions are their own and unique to them. Who am I to shit on them just because life isn't presented in the least problematic way.
As for the book, the women were basically empowered in their own right with one being a queen or some shit. They didn't hook up with each other because they were essentially best friends to the point of being family. At least two of them were, it's been a few years since I read it. But none of what you're saying sits right with me. Cause it's like this fundamental disconnect between reality and some weird ideal of "fairness" that perverts the very idea of agency. See it all the time in the polyam community where people aren't allowed to just love somebody and share them without also dating around at the same time. Don't speak for people, they can act for themselves and don't need your virtue signaling and goalkeeping.
I guess I understand wanting representation but I'm not a fan of trying to force it in over the wishes of the individual. Plenty of matriarchal societies in the real world and fiction that you can look to. No need to pervert someone's story for your own agenda.
First, there are no matriarchal societies. There are matrilineal ones, but that's a different thing. Even societies which historically practiced polyandry are not matriarchal.
Also, are you seriously implying that polygamy is not a system of oppression worldwide? The whole point is that it removes the rights of the individual. The vast majority of the time, polygamy occurs in societies where women aren't seen as equals.
This has nothing to do with your polyamory.
Tenshik ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:41:05 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Eh, marriage itself is a tool to control women and to a lesser extent men. Hence why it's so inextricably linked to religion which is another tool of the same. One to formalize the acquisition of property, and shockingly, those with more want to own more property and thus marry more women. Flip side is that monogamous marriage is there to force pair wise relationships in a society where a bunch of young men free of social ties and consequence will act out with more crime and violence. See incels of today. So what are we really accomplishing by quibbling about the state of polygamy? Some people use it nefariously and others try to elevate the practice of marriage. So what's the point in holding people hostage to the sins of the past... If a guy falls in love with more than one woman the women are not obligated to fuck each other for the sake of progressive ideals and shouldn't be shamed for such
Have you read "the binding"? The main character is male and falls in love with the same man his sister falls for. The only acceptable kind of love triangle in my opinion.
Or the bi girl kills herself and everyones depressed but then they avenge her or do something awesome in her memory and happily ever after with monologue at the end.
Got any recent recommendations? Dystopias used to be my favorite YA genre but the slew of trash that came out in the few years after Hunger Games was enough to burn me out until recently.

It was probably that too, but I remember him being asked what he thought of the leader (I think they called him the Primo Elect?) and he answered that he thought he was a good man, but the testers corrected him saying the man was supposed to be "like a father."
Well, don't be SUPER good at the trials if you're poor. Cause June also got a perfect and she went to college at 12. And her older brothers crush used to be poor before getting good grades on the trial
Politely disagree. That's what the whole "testing center" was for. If the poor does TOO well or well at all they get sent there. That's what I assumed she was implying anyway. Thomas did average on it, not incredible.
Correct. But you also are not aware of the average grade you need like Day didn't, and your killed. The colonies dont have some ass backwards testing system. But their whole way of living is completely insane. Neither one is good which is why I'd choose Antarctica if I had a choice. Point system is weird. But technology is decent.

I could never got through that book because in 7th grade this annoying ass dude walked up to give his booktalk on the third book of the series (it was supposed to be 3-4 minutes) and talked about all three books, SPOILING ALL THREE (yeah even the one he was giving the book talk on) for 17 MINUTES.
I mean I strongly disliked the guy anyway so the combination of HIM and 17 minutes worth of spoilers effectively ruined the first book when I tried to read it
Same! I just love how you can perfectly picture the novel! Los Angeles with Jumbotrons, a midwest city being infected with ads because they're too corporate. It's amazing, I didn't even realize there was a 3rd and 4th book and now i gotta read them
I remember reading the book then the graphic novel. Everything is so detailed in the book it was exactly how I pictured it in the graphic novel. Love Marie Lu (except Warcross)
The 4th book was actually just announced. The 3rd book is great but I read it as a finale and personally thought it was a week one. I still like how she expands the world though (the world map in the beginning of the book is really interesting!).
Thanks Iโm trying to remember if i read the 3rd i probably did because that was back when i actually kept up with reading more i should get on that again damn technology and lack of time
Also just wikid the series and it says itโs a retelling for teenagers about les miserables and i feel like i should reread legend and actually read les miserables or watch a version of it
The only thing I didnโt like of the book were the MCโs age, too young for the shit they were pulling off, and I thought the same thing even when I was their same age reading that.
Have you read Unwind? Itโs about your parents being legally able to have you โunwoundโ for parts (extra organs for organ transplants, extra limbs, etc) up until you turn 18 and a group of almost adults trying to evade unwinding. My mom and I liked it a lot!
Ah! Thanks for the reminder, I forgot there were more books! I read it right after Unwind came out and never got around to reading more of them, then it fell off my radar :/
I was honestly surprised Unwind even had a sequel since it worked pretty well as a standalone, but given the incredible work he did with Everlost, I'm definitely willing to look up more of Unwind's world.
Not quite YA but We Are Legion, We Are Bob is a pretty good dystopia, despite most of it not really taking place on earth. Even if itโs not the genre your looking for, itโs still an incredibly good sci-fi book.
Not a book, but the Netflix show 3% is really great, if you're fine with subtitles. (The English dub is not very good imo)

I find it interesting how the YA female protagonist archtype winds up joining the society of elites in the end while the disabled POC joins the rebellion she abandoned.
Also The 100. Admittedly the first few episodes are a bit too close to OP for comfort but if you can get past those, it's a ridiculously good show and nothing like typical YA dystopia.
After a whole life of watching American/British shows with subtitles until I now longer needed them, is curious see the other way around.

Red Rising. It's a dystopian Sci Fi set at least a thousand years in the future. The universe is made up of different "colors" of people (greys, reds, silvers, golds, pink), and each color has their own function in society. I'd say it's borderline Young Adult.
Not really recently released (not that old either) but I can recommend a bunch I loved growing up.
My favorite: Julie Kagawa's The Immortal Rules (its a 3 part serie). Its about a dystopian future in which huminity is close to instinct. I won't spoil why, but the world is overtaken by rabies-like creatures who infect every person or animal they bite. Although often their victims get completely torn to shreds before they even get a chance to turn. The remainder of humanity lives in cities surrounded by huge walls to keep these rabies creatures out. These cities are ruled by vampires and the humans living in it are pretty much their slaves, required to donate blood regurlarly etc. The vampires and the people who have given themselves up as their pet live a luxerious live. The rest of the people in the city are starving to death. They are unaware of the existance of most technology and almost all of them can't even read. There is also no communication between the cities so no one really knows how much people are left. The protagonist is a girl, living as one of these poor people. One day something goes wrong and she ends up getting turned into a vampire. What makes this book so great, and different from all those other awful vampire stories like twilight, is that she absolutely hates vampires. Of course there is also a boy, which can get cheesy but I think they're pretty cute. And good news, no love triangle! Cute boy is the only one. There is also isn't really something that makes her special.
Julia Kagawa has written some other series which I've also enjoyed, but they aren't really dystopian and either way this one is my favorite book of hers.
The rest in no particlar order:
There is also a really long series (8 books) by Maria V. Snyder. The first book is called Poison Study. I don't remember it enough to explain it in such detail and I'm not entirely sure it counts as dystopian. But it is about a girl who is in prison for murder. She is about to be executed but gets another chance by becoming the kings poison taster. This one is one of those books where the protagonist has special powers, but there's no love triangle as far as I can remember. It also has some dark stuff like rape and torture (but not written in a horror kind of way).
Another series by Maria V. Snyder (only 2 books this time) called Inside Out is about a future in which the remainder of humanity lives in some kind of giant metal box spaceship, if I remember correctly. Again, most of the people in it pretty much live as slaves. They do all the tasks that keep the ship going. Everyone caught disobaying is promptly executed. The female protagonist is one of these people. Her goal is to find a remoured exit that would lead to the "outside". Technically she is also "special" but this doesn't factor in until much later in the book. I don't think there's really any love interest at all, but I might be mistaken.
Next up, a 3 part series called 'the chemical garden' by Lauren Destefano. The first book is called Wither. It is about a dystopiab future in which people have achieved immortiality. But as consequence all their children die at the age of 25. Again there is a divide between the poor and the rich, with the female protagonist belonging to the former. She, togheter with a bunch of other girls, are kidnapped. Then her and two others are forced marry this guy, who is son to one of these rich immortal people. The series is basically about what she expieriences in that place and trying to escape. As far as I can remember there isn't really anything special about her nor a high focus on love interests.
Then there is another 3 part series, this one by Beth Revis. The first book is called Across the Universe. A bunch of people (scientist, engineers, etc) get frozen for a 300 long journey to another planet, which they are ment to colonize. This huge ship is manned by cloned 'slaves' that do everything from keeping the ship running to farming crops etc. One of these clones is called the elder. They are the one in charge (until they reach their destination and the peope are unfrozen). The protagonist is the daughter of two of scientist people. Something goes wrong along the way and she alone is unfrozen too early. This book is basically about her trying to figure out what happened. There is again nothing really special about her, and there's no love triangle.
Then, a 2-pary series by Bethany Griffen. First book is called Masque of the Red Death. As the name suggests, this book is about a time where their is another plague called the red death. Unlike all the other books, the protagonist is kind of a depressed rich girl, who does not really invoke symphaty for the most part. You could say this book both lets the reader learn to gain symphaty with her, as she learns to gain symphaty for others. Just a warning, this book contains quite some gruesome stuff. And unfortunatly it does have a love triangle. But all in all I found it am unique and enjoyable book.
Next up, two vampire series that both also have elements that make it very unique compared to all the other dumb vampire stories. First one is a 3-part series by Emily McKay. First book is called 'the Farm'. This book basically has two kinds of vampires. The mindless animal kind that devour anything and their path, and the basically human kind. The story is about two sisters, both human, one of them very authistic. She is very well written and is what makes this serie so unique. Just like in the first story I mentioned, humanity is close to instinct and the remainder are collected as slaves for vampires. But this book is a less distant future where the landscape is still very much like it is now. And there is still an active resistance against these vampires. Very good book.
The other one is a 2-part series by Laura Bickle. First book is called 'The Hallowed Ones'. This series only has the mindless monster kind of vampires. The part that makes it unique is that it takes place among the Amish. In this world these vampires just start appearing, so no one really knows whats going on yet. I don't really know how to describe the story, but the protagonist an teenage Amish girl.
And lastly, a 3 part series by Julie Bertagna. The first book is called Exodus. This one is actually a very realistic not-so-far-away dysyopian future. Due to melting ice caps most land is underwater and there is very little land left. The water is still rising and soon the entire island of the protagonist will be completely underwater. As far as they know, this island is the last place left. There is cyberworld called the Weave (a lot like todays VR) where the protagonist meets someone who tells her of cities that float in the sky, above the sea. As this is their only hope, she convinces her village to go on a voyage to find one of these cities.
Not recent, but I remember really liking Remnants by K A Applegate. I wasnโt able to get the last few books at the time, so I donโt know how it ends. I should go see if my library has them.
God those covers gave me nightmares. I actually started them a while ago but my library stopped stocking them after like book 4, but now seems like a good time to look them up again.
I genuinely enjoyed these books and was hosting for them to be movies. I'm glad they didnt though because most of the YA books turned movies aren't very good.
Ooh, the darkest mind series is also really good. The only problem is that the relationship between the MC and her love interest is as dull as staring at a wall. It feels like they were only put together because they were boy and girl and the writer felt that romance was necessary .

I mean itโs more Post Apocalyptic but The Road was pretty good. I read it for English, our teacher warned us it wasnโt for those w weak stomachs. Personally there were only 2 parts that made me uncomfortable but I got over it.
Basically itโs about a dad and his son trying to survive after this apocalyptic event. They gotta โgo southโ bc itโs getting too cold where they were and pretty much everything in the world is against them.
(Other dystopian books we read from that unit were catch 22, brave new world, 1984, and the Handmaids Tale. I read brave new world, high key hated it. The Road was good but man reading those 2 parts right before my lunch period made me feel physically sick. I heard the handmaids tale was great)

Man the day I got to the human farm Iโd skipped breakfast and there was no cannibalism in that book yet so I didnโt know what to expect. Anyway I was fucking starving when I pulled out my book in English. Then I get to the part where they have the people in their basement and the guy is missing his legs bc theyโre keeping him alive for food.
Then next period I went home for lunch, still starving but effectively grossed out, and my mom has pulled out chicken and I swear I felt physically sick. Grabbed a salad and had to be like โthis is fine itโs not even meatโ. wanted to stop reading the book and switch to catch 22 but I couldnโt get the thought out of my head so I just figured Iโd finish it and that would cause me to get over it (it did luckily)
And THEN when I got to the baby on the spit part I just had to stop for a sec.
[edit] ya talking about this part makes me question whether I should even be suggesting this book lmao but honestly it poses a great question about whether kindness/humanity/altruism all that good stuff is possible without civilization. And thereโs some wild images in there too idek it was so good yet so bad at the same time. The kinda book where youโre glad you read it but you never want to see t again.
I mean for humans, other humans are a really poor source of nutrition, and the amount of food a woman needs to carry a pregnancy to term is far more than what an even enourmous infant will amount to. Thats why we' domesticated cows and pigs, theyre full of stuff we can process better and they eat abundant plants we dont eat/our scraps which makes them an efficient food source.
Went to Barnes and noble to look for another book to read, I'm really into sci-fi/fantasy so I head over to that aisle. Around 60 percent of the books there have something resembling this plot. Going to the book store is literally digging though trash trying to find a valuable gemstone.
I love fantasy novels and holy shit is it hard to find a good series. Most of the books are the same Hero's Journey trope with nothing but names and area changed. When you find the gemstones, they tend to be really good at least.

Ugh same! Sometimes they just get so cheesy, esp after the first book (cough red queen, cough throne of glass cough)
I really liked Six of Crows and itโs sequel Crooked Kingdom tho, itโs kinda like a heist book combined with fantasy. (End of six of crows and the beginning of crooked kingdom were the best parts imo)
The sad part is that the series Leigh will release this year needs both knowledge from the Aix od Crows (wich is great) and her first trilogy in this universe (your regular YA trilogy that I didn't cared to finish at all).
kwiklok ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:39:27 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
In my opinion, it's not nessecary. Though I've read her Grisha trilogy, it was so long ago that I pretty much forgot all of it. Still I completely understood King of Scars, so I recommend you to read a summary of the Grisha trilogy and that will be enough.
Oh man, reading Six of Crows first really set me up for disappointment when I finally got around to reading the Grisha trilogy. The only characters I enjoyed were the prince and the villain.
I mean Six of Crows never shared anything besides the universe and one or two character mentions, this new one apparently is indeed integrated with both of them more deeply.
kwiklok ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:41:34 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I'd read a summary, so that you'll get a bit of back story but you definitely don't need to read the entire series. I did read them and what stood out to me was the great world building and some characters such as the prince (whom you've met in SoC) and the villain.
Six of crows is one of my favourite series! but i fuckingggg loved the throne of glass series and the red queen series man
kwiklok ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:43:12 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I liked Throne of Glass too! The last book not so much but the others woahh. I prefer A Court of Thorns and Roses though, just for the romance. Six of crows is my favorite <3
Went to Barnes and noble to look for another book to read, I'm really into sci-fi/fantasy so I head over to that aisle.
Read throne of glass, it did get sort of cheesy after the first book but I still enjoyed reading it.
I freaking loved six of crows and crooked kingdom, the main trilogy that it accompanies was also pretty good.
Most stories are hero's journey and it's kinda hard to do anything else. What they really need is to spice things up. The power of tropes is choosing to play them straight or subvert them. And when many authors play it completely straight with no originality, flat characters, and a shitty world, well then of course the books are going to be shit.
I like fantasy and when they introduce how the character is special I have to remind myself that they wouldn't write a book about the plain citizens that do nothing. Obviously the protagonist will be special. So get over it and enjoy the world and character building.
I wouldnโt say tropes are bad, itโs just that so many authors rely on them, especially Heroโs Journey. One of my favorite books is โThe Alchemistโ which is nothing but the Heroโs Journey but is still able to make a personal bond with readers. Iโm tired of authors giving a 10,000th rendition of the same story.
And thanks for reminding me, totally forgot it was my cake day ๐

One of my favorites is the ascended center trilogy. Aside from having good writing, it gasp ACTUALLY HAS THE CHARACTER SUFFER FUCKING CONSEQUENCES FROM HIS ACTIONS
This is one thing that's kinda funny about this series, I think.
The two main characters of the first book (like, chapters are written from their perspective) are both straight white men, and it only passes the Bechdel test due to like a single throwaway line.
On the whole, it's actually pretty traditional and conservative. There's even that trope where a main character pines after some woman who's honestly out of his league, she rejects him, and then they end up falling in love anyways. I don't think there's any gay people either, except for like one of the characters technically has eight parents living together, but that's portrayed more as an economic thing than like a bi polyamorous thing.
Then, second book onward, that all gets totally flipped on its head. Main characters have been pretty consistently half-and-half on gender and have been of all sorts of backgrounds. Also, I love that in this series, men and women can just be friends with each other. There doesn't have to be some uncomfortable romance between every couple of people that's around each other a bunch.

Yes. Season 1 and part of 2 follow very close to the books before spreading off
Which Iโm kind of ok with. I love the books, but after the first couple, I donโt see them translating all that well.
Tyrus ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:54:26 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I'm on book5 and I agree. The world building (the not-in-the-book background stuff on Earth/in the belt) they've established plays better for the Medium of TV, but also means diverging from the books more as they go on. Neither is better or worse. Sorta like how the MCU tells similar stories to the Comics, but is its own thing
Karkava ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 03:03:22 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Recommend something called the New Weird movement. It basically subverts and twists sci-fi, fantasy, and horror tropes without outright deconstructing them.
I'm reading Diamond Age right now! Love it. After reading snowcrash and a bit of cryptonomicon, Stephenson strikes me as an incredibly smart dude. He does his fuckin research and I'm always surprised by the density of his books
Have you read anything by Ursula K Le Guin? Sheโs my favorite sci fi author, sheโs really good. Her book โThe Dispossessedโ is probably my favorite
So best sci-fi I've read in forever: Murderbot diaries (All Systems Red is the first book I think?). They're super short, but they're incredibly good sci fi.
I feel the 4th is just taking in a different, more mature direction. They're now trying to build something better, against all odds, and Darrow is in the process of learning that violence can't solve everything. I felt the same way until I read it a second time and picked up on a bunch of the nuance in it. We'll see how Dark Age turns out I suppose. Still excited for it, it's a neat universe.
I avoid the digging by mostly reading older books that have established themselves as The Classicsโข.
Of course, that still means you sometimes end up reading books that aren't fun because they're too dated. I'm probably going to make people angry if I point out examples, but I think Lord of the Rings, A Wizard of Earthsea and Dune all badly suffer from this if you read them now for the first time. Not that the plots aren't good, but the narrative style makes my eyes glaze over.
And yet, oddly enough, I thought super ancient sci-fi classics like Ringworld, 1984 and even War of the Worlds were super captivating.
Have you read any of Fonda Lee's stuff? Her books definitely don't follow any standard plot molds. ZeroBoxer was a good scifi/interplanetary standalone, but the EXO duology dealt some truly impressive twists, characters, and alien colonization.
Have you read the Witcher books? If you liked the games, the first books are a collection of short stories and they're great.
But my favorite books ever are the Discworld series, th first one are not very good according to even the author himself, you can start with Guards! Guards!, Wyrd Sisters or Reaper Man.
I've read some books from that series I wasn't that big of a fan. A few books that I really enjoyed from other authors were
Ringworld by Larry Niven
The Red Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson
Dune by Frank Herbert
Sea of Rust by C Robert Cargill
And The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy books by Douglas Adams
Do you have any more suggestions ?

I had to take a break from reading YA because even though the plots can be super fun and creative, the LOVE TRIANGLES WERE EVERYWHERE and it was so freaking obnoxious! Almost impossible to find a YA novel without a love triangle in it.
That's my problem. I find YA to be the most diverse genre right now. Loads of LGBT and PoC authors and stories. But, fuck, I cannot stand love triangles, especially because it's always so obvious who they end up with. It's the one that's got two personality traits instead of one.
yoshi570 ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 10:26:34 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Having LGBT and PoC doesn't make the genre diverse. OP shows why.
That's true, but for YA it has been imo, especifically in fantasy. If you read a lot of mainstream stuff I can imagine why it wouldn't be, but I've read loads of really cool stuff. Lesbian killer mermaids, dark fairy princes and their murder-loving lovers, three magic queen sisters fighting over a single throne, programming your own DNA, afraid to fall in love because you'll lose your sense of smell, the story of an evil queen rising to power... Loads of cool shit.
If you only read one or two books off the bestseller list, I can understand why it looks bad, but if you search there's loads and loads of amazing stuff.
Check out Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. No overt romance at all. There's "oh, I guess this guy isn't as bad a douche as I thought he was," but that's as far as it goes.
seroeth ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:11:24 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
brandon is the man-don. the mistborn trilogy shares some tropes with popular YA but is just so gooood
Itโs not YA or a novel but I think that Girl Genius does a great love triangle. Rather than being supported by misunderstandings or people not sure which theyโd like more, itโs sustained by the fact that they do not have the time to resolve it because they are all too busy building death lasers to stop other people from killing them with death lasers.
she was different from other girls because they were all sluts who followed trends and blindly believed everything the obviously corrupt government says and shes the ONLY one who is smart and isnโt a dumb whore - every ya r/notliketheothergirls character ever
I got sick of the YA plots when I was a young teen, so I went from the section labeled โteenโ to the section labeled โadultโ not knowing what adult means.
Thought I got this really cool spy book. I mean it was kinda about spies... who fucked a lot.
My dad knew I liked fantasy. So, when I was in middle school he bought me Obsidian Butterfly by Laurel K Hamilton thinking it was a pure fantasy book...
Ah yes, the progression chain that got me from twighlight to vampire porn novels. Because if I was going to read trash I might as well read one with a happy end - not the mormon handbook to chaste relationships.
I liked King Arthur lore when I was in elementary and I was a pretty advanced reader, so my aunt got me a good book about it. The first scene was a sex scene and my mom confiscated the book after she read it lol

Hunger Games
Divergent
Red Queen
Mortal Instruments
And so on, and so forth... Yet here I am, still reading them.
I fucking binged the divergent and insurgent books before allegiant came out, and when it came out my mom told โyou might wanna not read thatโ which of course made me question her why I should avoid it, now she didnโt spoil me the ending but she told me that the reviews were all negative so I will never read that book lol.
wlsb ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 10:59:19 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Allegiant really doesn't seem like it belongs in the same series.
Thank you for this! Iโve discovered SNL (Iโm not from the US) recently and I have been binging on it for a couple of weeks now, this one is spot on as many of their videos are!
I just subverted the whole thing in one of my books by having the usual run-up to the male love interest being in love with the MC, then it turns out the MC is gay. Thought that would be rather funny.
When I try to it usually comes out really boring because I am a firm believer in people's ability to turn down romantic advances when the timing is bad and peoples ability to recognise bad timing and not take it personal:
"I'm sorry but there is evil to fight so I'm not sure how I feel about you. But I do need a hug because this shit is scary."
"I get that. Here have a hug. I'm sure we can pick this up when this is over and see if the feelings are still there when we won't need each other to survive."
"But what if one of us dies?"
"Then we know we had feelings we could never explore to the extend we would have wanted. It's not like that wouldn't be the case if we'd go all in for it now and then died next week."
"You could leave me pregnant with your child though."
Meanwhile, my solution to it is pretty much "Anti-manic pixie dream girl"
Oh, you throw the stunningly attractive, energetic, high on life girl in with the soulful, brooding male hero, living a shuttered, emotionless existence? Another fucking story of him learning to love life, right?
Nah. Instead, let's see what happens when someone realizes just how fucked up life can be, even without directly experiencing hell herself.
wouldn't the "anti manic pixie dream girl trope" be a girl who has real personality flaws and wants to pursue her own goals despite her attraction to the male protagonist?
so it would just be a regular girl who is moderately attracted to a depressed person? just realistic love story?
It would be closer to one. Biggest difference is that she would have a very specific personality to a degree, with that personality being that of the MPDG.
But when I go to a store, get a dozen books of different genres, and they all fucking have one it starts to get annoying. On the plus side, I can almost perfectly guess when and what the author is going to have them do.
I mean, sometimes the orphan trope is relevant to the plot. It allows the character to have a reason for what is happening to them now or why they're doing something. I can't remember the name of the book, but there is a book where the main character is an orphan in Boston and she gets kidnapped for expirementation (they implant an extra thymus into her) but she escapes and teams up with someone who isn't an orphan. But if she wasn't an orphan then she wouldn't have been kidnapped

Funny how some people claim that superheroes will the genre with fleeting popularity.
That's always kinda been the thing with YA. It goes through phases where one particular form of YA is super popular. For a while, YA fantasies were all the rage, and then for a bit YA paranormal romances, and then YA dystopias, and now it seems like YA dramas are kinda popular now.
While the exact form it takes changes, YA being relatively popular has remained a constant for the last fifteen years or so.
Karkava ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 03:54:56 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
YA dystopias fizzed out to early. The nationalism epidemic is spreading, and some subversions in the genre to keep it fresh is much needed.
Yeah, it did. Unfortunately, the common plotline of the run-of-the-mill YA dystopian story was pretty familiar to most people. Seemingly "ordinary" teenager overthrows the government was the story of Eragon and probably a bunch of others as well before the YA dystopian trend started.
Karkava ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 04:22:22 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I want to see a YA dystopian story where the main character just hates the government and just won't take any more of their BS. No more mushy romance subplots, no more angst over their physical appearance, just pure hatred for the bastards that fucked up their country. Even to the expense of their social life and connection to their peers as they die on the front lines while the MC just keeps chugging along. Now THAT'S escapism served with a little side of reality.

The larger problem is that so many of the male horndogs the "strong" women leads are fawning over in these stories act like borderline-rapist neanderthals who are off their prescribed psychotics, and that's being presented as the self-insert fantasy.
nomad1c ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 13:26:50 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
sheesh, where are all the women writing fantasies about effeminate male feminists?
I just don't think relationships with abusive moody assholes who struggle with the concept of "No means No" should be peddled to young women as a good thing, or to young men as a model to follow. Fuck me, right?
[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:51:56 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*
personally i think young women should be allowed to fantasise about whatever they want.
It's not about fantasizing, it's about normalizing abusive (physical and sexual) tendencies. A fantasy has a mark that gives a clear break from reality so that the audience knows which they're dealing with. These books almost never lay out that the behavior described is unacceptable in normal society. Instead they present it as something normal and desirable.
But hey, if you think it's cool to just tell teens that abusive relationships are cool, more power to you.
Yeah, we have thousands of years of literature which is the same plot but with the sexes flipped. Heck and sometime all women love the male lead instead of just two.
Is there any YA books that avoid cliches like these and are actually decent books?
Z0rya ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 03:43:40 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I don't know if it still holds up, but I liked Poison Study when I was younger, though also only reccomend that book by her (lol) - still cheesy but not horrendously so.
Rithmatist is by Sanderson, one of his more underrated books.
Uprooted is a good newer YA novel following slightly more traditional footsteps.
The Six of Crows duology is pretty good! My favorite books at the moment.
Now...I really like the Lunar Chronicles, and there's a LITTLE bit of this....(MC just so happens to be the same age as the presumed dead princess, she's part of a group considered subhuman in her society, etc. etc.) It's sci-fi retellings of fairy tales, so some of that is unavoidable.
BUT it does avoid a lot of other cliches of YA that I super duper hate. There are tough tomboy girls and there are soft girly girls, and not ONCE does anyone pull "not like other girls," the girly girls still have valuable skills and are not looked down on by the tomboys. There are four different romantic subplots, but they don't drag on or take up too much time, I genuinely liked all of them. NO love triangles, and great platonic friendships between guys and girls with no hint of jealousy.
Going Bovine is probably the best YA novel I've ever read, but on the rare occasion I see people discussing it on the internet it's pretty controversial. So I'd recommend it, but it might not be for everyone.
Krako8 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 04:48:19 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Come to think of it, Worm actually subverts many YA tropes.
ShE thINk sHe'S sO uGly - and is treated by like she's plain
CUte boY so InTerestEd in hER! - he friendzones her when she makes a move
gOVeRmenT IS hAte hEr - because she's a violent criminal
For anyone thinking of reading this (which I do recommend if you like sci-fi/fantasy) it presents as very YA at first, but be warned that it gets very heavy very fast.
expanding on someoneโs comment that just linked to the first chapter of Worm. Itโs a web serial (not actually published, just released a chapter at a time on a website), but is really astoundingly good. Very, very long, about 1,750,000 words, a superhero story that is an epic in the more traditional sense. It starts out feeling very YA (the protagonist is a harshly bullied 15 year old girl) but the stakes escalate over time and by the mid point it is probably totally distanced from YA. Extreme amounts of violence and death, generally can get very dark. No explicit sexual content though. Avoids stupid love triangle, has great and inventive powers/combat, and amazing world building and attention to detail in every aspect. Unlike almost all superhero stories the source and cause of powers is actually very relevant to the plot, although itโll take a while to get to that point.
Fonda Lee's EXO duology was like 70% explosive action, 20% alien politics and post-colonial fallout, and 10% teenage angst, but even that is done well since the characters are well-developed. It has some predictable scenes/plotlines but for the most part, every chapter had me going WTF in the best ways possible.
books and movies are different though. while both require a story, a movie has much more "things" dependent on its production than a book. Movies are multiple artforms combined into 1 event, while a book is nothing but words.
music is a different beast entirely.

I donโt see what your point is here? The point is that of any media there is an infinite amount to consume so there is probably something your taste somewhere....movies maybe there is less choice though but still enough.
Big mood. Most everything I find is trashy YA. I hate YA with a burning hatred that pierces the very depths of my soul, igniting deep within me a white hot flame that towers over the world, ready to rend it asunder. Man.
Young Adult) is a 2011 movie where Charlize Theron plays an author who struggles to get her life together while also writing life advice for teenage girls.

Just read non-fiction. I've exclusively read non fiction books for the last 3 years after high school, with the sole exceptions being LOTR and Catch 22.
Edit: got downvoted for sharing my opinion. These normie subs really are trash.
Same. I have stacks of ya novels. I thought I was being the mysterious bookish girl always reading instead of socializing. But actually those ya novels only temporarily fulfilled my loneliness and distracted me from being alone
To be fair, there are (or i guess were at least, since i read them when i was younger) lots of good YA novels that also dont focus on or even have romance. Unfortunately they arent super popular
Self-Published YA Book: There's a portal that a bunch of us in other portals really like, unfortunately, that portal broke-up two tears ago, more than two years ago, actually, but less than three years ago but much to our surprise, the portal got back together, so we all made plans to go see the portal. I was pretty excited, because they are one of my favorite portals, even if they're just a cover portal, plus the singer from one of my portals and his wife were going to be there to see the portal, and I haven't been able to see my friend and his wife in a while. I got there today, and my friend is there, but my friend's wife is not there and it turns out, even though she's also a big fan, just like the rest of us are big fans, of this portal, that she wasn't feeling good, so she had to stay home and miss seeing the portal.
Yall realize that yall are making fun of teenage girls version of soft core porn.
Totally being a bitch but itd love to see the plot and diversity of the porn everyone here watches. Bet it gets specific. Also theres all kind of variety in the YA novels. Do you want a historical love triangle? A love triangle where the girl is a pirate? How about a love triangle that also has metaphors for sexism in a dystopian future? A love triangle with vampires. Whatever your kink we will write a love triangle and set up very sexually tense scenes for teenage girls to rub one out to.
Every game/movie/tv show/Greek epic:
White young man
He is different
He is the chosen one
He has the best phallu... I mean, weapon
He must save the girl/fight beside her (but he is stronger)
This is literally the entire plot of matched. Is it always mandatory for everybody to be white? Asians are always sappy messes and black people do not actually exist, unless in a protest book. Donโt get me started on literally any other race
The leviathan books did it so well. The characters have realistic flaws for the time period (prince aleksander knows little of the outside world and, given that its World War I, has some misogynistic views for a while, while Deryn, in her attempts to stay aboard the leviathan, barely reveals anything about herself to people she trusts, which bites her in the ass). Thereโs also only a โlove triangleโ in the second book and itโs barely relevant. Plus the characters arenโt special because theyโre going to save the world, just because one is a prince and the other is his friend.

Cottoneye-Joe ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:27:09 on April 21, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Having a half a spine when nobody around her seems to have one at all is the trademark of all YA novel heros.
She's so normal and relatable - unfortunately to make this special everyone else needs to be a hollowed out shell to undercut the mediocrity of the protagonist.
thehumansrdead ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 15:20:40 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
now that I think about it, a lot of โnormalโ traits were once considered unacceptable. like being left handed.
but the problem here is that the special trait of these characters is almost always something good, useful or something they would end up being grateful for having.

Her eyes, twinkling like galaxies, sparkled at me as she spoke. โI think the poster should be colored blue, like my eyes.โ
I glanced at her orbs, crystal clear and pensive, then stood up, markers dulling in comparison to her eyes.
โNothing is as sky-blue, as diamond-bright, as partially-heterochromic as your eyes.โ
She laughed, the movement sending flecks of light through her eyes.

Redneckalligator ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 12:06:51 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Ghost writers suck because you always gotta deal with their unfinished bussiness before they'll write for you and 99 out of a hundred times its full of so many spelling errors you'll spend more time editing than if you had written it yourself

If you like the kinda of characters Brandon Sanderson writes you may like those books too. I only play the WH40k role playing games, which use the inquisition a decent amount and are based on amazing semitropy but great developed characters from Eisenhorn and later series.

So... what are those things?
Souledex ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:13:10 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I always considered the first four books the original story of Ranger's Apprentice. I felt that book 5 onward was weak by comparison, to the point that I never got around to book 10
ThatGuyMax ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:09:37 on April 2, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
The first few are about growth, the latter ones are more about his relationships, so I can see where you're coming from. I recommend reading the offshoot of it called brotherband chronicles. It gives a lot more of the growth feeling than rangers apprentice, and feels more well written imo.

DravenPrime ยท 196 points ยท Posted at 02:48:09 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
LesbianSpaceRocks ยท 123 points ยท Posted at 03:22:10 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Thing is, in The Hunger Games novels, Katniss was described as having olive skin and pretty messy hair.
Yet they chose Jennifer Lawrence for the movie adaptation, who looks nothing similar to the book depiction.
Taurothar ยท 65 points ยท Posted at 03:37:58 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I'll forgive them because there's no logical reason why olive skin would be prominent in Appalachia even a few generations down the road and through wars while remaining somewhat consistent in traditions with the current people of that area (songs, hunting/trapping techniques, white liquor/moonshine). That's a shitty descriptor from the author more than anything.
McManus26 ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 10:14:27 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I thought it was established that part of the dystopian setting was having populations segregated by race? So everyone in district 11 was black, and everyone in district 12 was of originally native American or Roma decent (after having their original culture and history purged, of course). Bit of subtle worldbuilding there.
Brittigno ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 13:19:47 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

FlamingFlyingV ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 14:28:28 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

zherok ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 07:11:06 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
MissRayRay ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:40:53 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
True. Itโs been a while since I read the book. I think there was a lot of potential with the world he built and that was enough for me to overlook the actual plot.

It's just I have no idea why it was in the books though.
There was no thematic, plot or character reason for it to happen.
One of the three has no chemistry with the guy and another is just absent for basically the entire story.
The one possible explanation I can think of is that it just shows how much being a Ta'veren fucks with everyone around you.
pedantic_cheesewheel ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 05:59:37 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

MagicUnicornLove ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:17:51 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Huh?

TDIfan241 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:02:52 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Didnt he answer the republics questions with loyalty? I thought it was because he was poor and got a perfect score making him expendable to see how he got a perfect score.
Rafila ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:01:06 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
It was probably that too, but I remember him being asked what he thought of the leader (I think they called him the Primo Elect?) and he answered that he thought he was a good man, but the testers corrected him saying the man was supposed to be "like a father."
KingDaKahh ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:15:59 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Well, don't be SUPER good at the trials if you're poor. Cause June also got a perfect and she went to college at 12. And her older brothers crush used to be poor before getting good grades on the trial
TDIfan241 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:30:22 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Politely disagree. That's what the whole "testing center" was for. If the poor does TOO well or well at all they get sent there. That's what I assumed she was implying anyway. Thomas did average on it, not incredible.
KingDaKahh ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:32:30 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Then if I (a poor person) do average and get moved up, my child won't be sent off to testing centers because they're poor and smart
TDIfan241 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:00:08 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Correct. But you also are not aware of the average grade you need like Day didn't, and your killed. The colonies dont have some ass backwards testing system. But their whole way of living is completely insane. Neither one is good which is why I'd choose Antarctica if I had a choice. Point system is weird. But technology is decent.

Allupual ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:00:02 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

Allupual ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:05:04 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Went to Barnes and noble to look for another book to read, I'm really into sci-fi/fantasy so I head over to that aisle. Around 60 percent of the books there have something resembling this plot. Going to the book store is literally digging though trash trying to find a valuable gemstone.
Send_RWBY_Pictures ยท 139 points ยท Posted at 02:25:41 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
I love fantasy novels and holy shit is it hard to find a good series. Most of the books are the same Hero's Journey trope with nothing but names and area changed. When you find the gemstones, they tend to be really good at least.

The sad part is that the series Leigh will release this year needs both knowledge from the Aix od Crows (wich is great) and her first trilogy in this universe (your regular YA trilogy that I didn't cared to finish at all).

In my opinion, it's not nessecary. Though I've read her Grisha trilogy, it was so long ago that I pretty much forgot all of it. Still I completely understood King of Scars, so I recommend you to read a summary of the Grisha trilogy and that will be enough.
honeychurch ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 05:39:49 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Oh man, reading Six of Crows first really set me up for disappointment when I finally got around to reading the Grisha trilogy. The only characters I enjoyed were the prince and the villain.

I mean Six of Crows never shared anything besides the universe and one or two character mentions, this new one apparently is indeed integrated with both of them more deeply.

I'd read a summary, so that you'll get a bit of back story but you definitely don't need to read the entire series. I did read them and what stood out to me was the great world building and some characters such as the prince (whom you've met in SoC) and the villain.

Keep in mind that Tropes Aren't Bad. Tropes are tools.
Most stories are hero's journey and it's kinda hard to do anything else. What they really need is to spice things up. The power of tropes is choosing to play them straight or subvert them. And when many authors play it completely straight with no originality, flat characters, and a shitty world, well then of course the books are going to be shit.
But yeah, most stuff is shit.
Also, happy cake day.

I like fantasy and when they introduce how the character is special I have to remind myself that they wouldn't write a book about the plain citizens that do nothing. Obviously the protagonist will be special. So get over it and enjoy the world and character building.
Send_RWBY_Pictures ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:58:37 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, these are my favorite modern sci-fi and they did a great job adapting it to screen.
Thereโs half a dozen fully fleshed out complex female characters doing what they do for reasons.
CopratesQuadrangle ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:24:14 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I feel the 4th is just taking in a different, more mature direction.

I had to take a break from reading YA because even though the plots can be super fun and creative, the LOVE TRIANGLES WERE EVERYWHERE and it was so freaking obnoxious! Almost impossible to find a YA novel without a love triangle in it.
Broken_Alethiometer ยท 68 points ยท Posted at 05:43:12 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
Broken_Alethiometer ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:32:25 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Rather than being supported by misunderstandings or people not sure which theyโd like more, itโs sustained by the fact that they do not have the time to resolve it because they are all too busy building death lasers to stop other people from killing them with death lasers.

I just subverted the whole thing in one of my books by having the usual run-up to the male love interest being in love with the MC, then it turns out the MC is gay. Thought that would be rather funny.
Quantentheorie ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:38:59 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
"You think that's smart?"
"Not at all. Oh I see. Glad we talked."

Well. She ain't a manic pixie no more.
Optimus-_rhyme ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:07:49 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*
wouldn't the "anti manic pixie dream girl trope" be a girl who has real personality flaws and wants to pursue her own goals despite her attraction to the male protagonist?
so it would just be a regular girl who is moderately attracted to a depressed person? just realistic love story?
jfarrar19 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:49:56 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
It would be closer to one. Biggest difference is that she would have a very specific personality to a degree, with that personality being that of the MPDG.

AnUnimportantLife ยท 43 points ยท Posted at 03:50:59 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
AnUnimportantLife ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 04:03:41 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

TheBlueMenace ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 04:46:36 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

But they are all still YA, which has its tropes.

Dangerous_Wishbone ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 04:23:41 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I think Skulduggery Pleasant counts, though it's more urban fantasy YA. Those cliches exist, but they play out a lot more...realistically.
Also, there are more onscreen (onpage?) deaths than in Game of Thrones, so just keep that in mind.
SuperWeskerSniper ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:59:06 on March 31, 2019 ยท (Permalink)
expanding on someoneโs comment that just linked to the first chapter of Worm.

Just read non-fiction. I've exclusively read non fiction books for the last 3 years after high school, with the sole exceptions being LOTR and Catch 22.
Edit: got downvoted for sharing my opinion. These normie subs really are trash.

Unless it's on a topic you really enjoy, it's going to be a lot drier than fiction. Which isn't what a lot of people look for in a book.

But there are so many good series! Try the first Witcher books if you liked the games, they are short stories and go quickly.
Or the Discworld books, which are my favorites in the world

Itโs listing the common tropes of YA books, the protagonist being a teenage white girl is something that almost all of them share.
