If I had a delorian, I'd go back to that theatre. You would be watching the fast and furious and see him fade right out of the movie.

Um, it's more like the movie X-Men First Class where a young Mystique breaks into a young Xavier's mansion to steal all kinds of food and goodies, but instead of Xavier telepathically making her eat her own dookie he allows her to stay and live and eventually become his partner in recruiting other mutants.

Wrong again, this is more like The NeverEnding Story where young Bastian hides from bullies in a creepy ass bookstore and then steals a book which leads to his saving of Fantasia and naming of the Child Like Empress. It's Frank dux's favorite movie too he keeps trying to convince reporters that he competes in these secret martial arts tournaments in the woods that nobody else ever comes forward to say they took part in too.
Jojje22 · 1 points · Posted at 14:25:31 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Haha fuckin' Frank Dux... I honestly think there's an overlap in personality between fishermen and martial artists, as in there are a certain subset of practitioners that are habitual liers. Some catch huge fish that they for reason or other have to let go, others supposedly compete in, and win, ancient martial arts tournaments to the death that nobody happens to know about.
it's been a long-standing problem in the community - there's still a lot of woo in the martial arts community. it's a lot better than it was in the 80s, when it was REALLY bad.
Nah, it's more like Rushmore, where the aspiring director Max Fisher gives the bully Magnus Buchan a role in his high school play, which consequently turns it into a big hit.

This is almost like the plot in Bloodsport. Kid gets caught trying to steal a sword, martial arts teacher teaches thief martial arts instead of having him arrested. Seems legit.
This made me think up an idea for a comedy short where a bumbling thief robs a theatre, gets caught and has to pretend to be an actor and get through a performance of hamlet avoiding suspicion to escape
The Stuntman (1980) was a lot like this: a criminal gets an on-the-run job as a stuntman - his job is to play the part of a criminal on the run from the law.
This fugitive feels that the director is on to him - and that the director is going to use / abuse this situation so as to make the film better.
It is fun! No idea how to download this film, but it is a riot for sure.
Description:
A fugitive stumbles on a movie set just when they need a new stunt man, takes the job as a way to hide out, and falls for the leading lady.
Reminds me of Blue Streak, Martin Lawrence is a thief and a diamond heist goes bad. He ends up storing the massive diamond in a building under construction before getting caught. When he gets out, it's the new police headquarters and he has to impersonate a cop to steal the jewel again. It's a pretty fun movie.
That does sound brilliant. Guessing the plot twist: (like Eddie Murphy in nearly all his films) folks with criminal minds make brilliant police officers. In the process of getting his diamond he saves lives and wins cool cop friends.
Edit: Eddie Murphy as 'donkey' made a terrible cop. Possible exception.
What amazes me with movies that do this - they are still amazing. How can they do that? You know the movie without ever having seen it and somehow it is an amazing surprise.
Of course, it is people like me that keep Hollywood afloat whilst they keep re-using the same plot / characters / franchises.
Blue Streak had Martin Lawrence as a jewel thief who hid a prized diamond in the ventilation shaft of a construction site. Years later after he was caught and released from prison he returns to the construction site to discover it's the police precinct. He has to pretend to be a cop and comedy ensues.
"Vinjamin 'Vin' Sinclaire, known for his Fast and Furious movies said that he learned everything he knew from that artistic director 'he changed my life, he changed my name'"
I always maintain that Chronicles was the the best of the three, followed by Riddick, and then Pitch Black. Not that Pitch Black isn't good, it's just Chronicles is a goddamn great sci-fi adventure, and aspires to some very interesting philosophical ideals and dialogues.
Totally agree with you! Riddick, and even more so Pitch Black were low(er) budget thriller films that didn't really explore a universe that a classic sci-fi romp tends to do. Chronicles of Riddick had everything you want. It's of course personal preference that I just prefer sci-fi over thrillers, too. One of the top sci-fi films I'd say that I've probably seen at least 30 times.
I really liked the similarities between Pitch Black and Riddick for some reason, and it makes me hope the next one is a big budget adventure mirroring Chronicles. I quite like the back and forth, gives it a bit of variety.
I've also watched Chronicles numerous times, one of my favourite sci-fi films. Great cast, great plot, great visuals. Vin isn't a great actor by any means, but he's perfect as Riddick. He has made that character his own, and I couldn't see anyone else playing him now.
Don't get me wrong—I really enjoy Pitch Black and Riddick and I've certainly seen Pitch Black several times! I really hope you're right that they alternate back and forth as the thrillers, in sacrificing breadth for depth, sort of help explore Riddick's character more richly.
And yeah I agree—to me Vin is to Riddick as Arnold is to the Terminator. There will only be one Terminator, and there will only be one Riddick.
You should check out Find Me Guilty, and Strays. I think he's a better actor than he gets credit for, but I wouldn't argue he is one of the greats by any means. He wrote directed and starred in Strays, which is what got him the role written for him in Saving Private Ryan. He definitely has a passion for the projects he does work on and is great with his fans though.

Doesn't matter, ask any actor, any real actor, and they'll tell you, it doesn't matter if you act in Fast and Furious, or Chronicles of Riddick, acting's acting.
Honestly, I'm torn over this TIL. Great for Vin and I like that the artistic director didn't call the cops on two kids, but it just seems sort of unfair that two kids doing something wrong get rewarded for it when there's so many kids out there who would absolutely love to be part of a show let alone let that lead to them eventually being an international superstar, who won't ever get the chance because they were/are good kids not out there up to no good.
That said, meh. Life is unfair in lots of ways anyway and chance and luck play a big role in performing arts success like this, and in performing arts people look for charisma and I'm guessing Vin and his buddy had it when the director caught them which led to the director using them.
hey i got an idea. let's teach kids instead of throwing them into prison to rot. they weren't rewarded; they were given opportunity. even prisoners get opportunities.

some people recognize that rampaging kids like this just need something to do. this person saw something in mr diesel that he recognized as talent and nurtured it instead of punishing for being a bored kid with a little spare time.
Yeah, nothing against that. Just that Vin got that attention, encouragement and nurture because he was out there making trouble, which in turn led to him becoming a multi-millionaire superstar, whereas so many kids who aren't out there making trouble will never get that same attention and encouragement. But it's just the way the world works. Random chance of whose paths cross in life.
bigted41 · 1 points · Posted at 14:35:14 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
you missed the part where he likely worked his ass off to get to where he is. don't think that people that are "discovered" haven't worked just as hard or harder than anyone else. he didn't become a millionaire the day after this guy started giving him lessons.
I didn't miss anything. It's easier to work your ass off for something with someone encouraging you and nurturing you towards it. Still requires work that Vin put in, and a good amount of luck which Vin got, but again so many kids would love that personal attention and encouragement who will never get it because they weren't up to no good.

Every kid deserves multiple chances, that's why they aren't considered adults.
I never said they didn't. I only pointed out that the director went above and beyond, which it's great Vin got that chance. Just that loads of kids who would've loved that chance and guidance never got it because they were being good.

When I looked at those two children, I didn't see two little arseholes partaking in needless vandalism of a theater who could have been taken home by the police as a much needed wake up call. I saw missed opportunities, I saw a raw energy wasted on something destructive which I could harness and put into something positive and creative. Some may say I am an enabler and that 99 times out of 100 that child would not have become a famous actor and would have simply learned that bad behaviour is rewarded, but those people don't know me and my pretentious methods.

“I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. “You don’t have to tell me,” I said. “I’m off the team, aren’t I?” “Well,” said Coach, “you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you’re wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times.” It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that’s when I felt the handcuffs go on.”

This level of compassion is rare, but sorely needed. He's right to try and harness the energy of a hoodlum and turn it into something positive.
Your point is that what the director did was a pretentious hail mary that miraculously worked and statistically speaking, the director would've done much better to report a seven-year-old kid to the police.
My point is that there's absolutely no evidence to suggest that. You're just baselessly propelling the punitive idea of justice.
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 13:53:50 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
But even if Vin Diesel had earned his place on the production, statistically speaking, he was still unlikely to become a famous actor.
The autogenerated subtitles on that video add an extra element of hilarity, just the way they scroll across when he said "you fuck my wife?" Also suprisinly accurate considering his unusual pattern of speech
magnora7 · 25 points · Posted at 11:59:15 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Personally I don't see him as a very good actor. I don't feel anything special from him in movies. But that doesn't mean he's a bad actor to other people. Some just like the hard, emotionless personally in the movies he's in.
One thing is criticizing, which is ok, but other thing is what u/bkdpotatop is saying, which is basically that he should stop acting so we can stop dealing with his movies, like if he were being forced to watch them.
Everytime I read this story I wonder how many people know what happened after. This is from the director's biography 'Hetty: the vacuum who could':
"I nurtured little Vinstopher(Vin Diesel's real name) like he was my own child. I taught him to act, to sing, to dance. I taught him to live. At age 10 he sat on my knee and burst crying because he did not have a girlfriend to take to the ball. I told him I would take him myself. I dressed in my best Sunday clothes and picked him up in a rented limousine. Unfortunately he managed to get access to the limo's mini bar and by the time we arrived he was drunk. He ran out of the vehicle, took off his clothes and climbed on a nearby palm tree. I pleaded with him to come down, instead he picked a coconut and threw it at my head. I fell into a coma for two weeks. He never visited me and never apologised'
I watched that last week. It was crazy to see all these people I recognize today but were nobody of note when I first saw the film. Riddley Scott sure has an eye for talent.
He's still not a good actor. Wouldn't it be crazy if we found out that he's just been constantly breaking into places, only to get caught by various directors and producers and forced into movies?
Edit: okay guys, let's just agree that although he isn't a very good actor, he is successful. Will that work for you?
He might not have a load of range, but to be a successful actor you only have to be really, really good at one type of role, and he certainly plays a convincingly imposing Tough Man of Few Words.
Well, he may not be exceptionally nuanced, or display a lot of variety, but I wouldn't say he's not a good actor because of that.
He is a good character actor who has managed to spin his image into a successful leading role archetype. He may play the same type of person in nearly all his films, but the same can be said of many fondly remembered actors throughout history.
Browsed the comments just to find this. I had to scroll way too far to find it and I was starting to wonder "Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules!?"
It's because the only stories that are worth remembering are the outliers. Meryl Streep, for instance, went to Yale School of Drama, auditioned for roles, and was cast because she was talented and skillful.
It's not as interesting to hear that they went to school, worked hard, auditioned, and got the job the same way so many other actors get their jobs.
Meanwhile, tons of guys (and girls) who played by the rules, studied the craft, and tried to break into acting are now waiting tables, selling cars, driving Uber, etc.
SWAT came into my house, disrespected my whole family because somebody narc'd me out! And you know what? IT WAS YOU!, Vin Deisel did this, now I finally know.

This story relates to why I hate the security lock-downs at Columbia and NYU.
Back when I was at USC (which is embedded in black and other minority neighborhoods like Columbia and NYU), we'd have local kids wander onto campus (for possibly nefarious reasons - I don't know) and come into our buildings and walk into our laboratory.
We'd "intercept" them and talk to them. We ended up explaining what we were doing and having very interesting conversations with them. A few of them decided they wanted to study engineering after the encounters and visits.
And that was enough a win to justify having an "open campus" where the neighbors could come into the buildings if they wanted.
Columbia and NYU campuses are locked down comparable to many military bases I used to work at. It's disgusting! And to me, it's clear "the Terrorist have won" as a result of 9-11 when you have this level of fear, even of fellow Americans who happen to be brown.

Vin Diesel is an awful actor. He is the mediocre cookie cutter "action hero". Emphasis on mediocre. He is nowhere near Stallone or Arnold.
He is also painfully delusional about his acting abilities. Every Vin Diesel movie always has a long drawn out monologue of him babbling to the camera about some nonsense. The type of monologue you find in an Anthony Hopkins type movie. All Fast and Furious movies have it, Knockaround Guys, XXX, etc. Forget about the fact that these are all run of the mill lower than average action type movies and have no need nor place for monologues of this type.
He must have a clause in his contractss, because I simply cannot believe anyone in their right mind would want to allow 3-5 minutes of this bumbling imbecile talking to the camera like a real actor.
He needs to learn his place and stick with CGI infested movies and fake looking stunts done by doubles. Fucking hack should be happy he even gets a paycheque.
You sure know a lot about Vin diesel and his acting style. You must have seen a lot of his performances. If you don't like him so much, maybe you should stop going to see his movies.

I dont go to theaters, so I dont spend a penny. That being said you are absolutely 100% correct. I should stop watching that garbage >.<
I was rewatching the episode of 30 Rock where Jenna says she hates the troops. I tried to see if I could argue for her and I came up with a question that could be put to people who support the US troops on the lines of - do you support drug dealers, rapists and serial killers? because they are also victims of their upbringing. Whether they were treated unfairly by authorities, or molested, or had terrible parents/mothers... and the link between the upbringing and the actions does have a correlation - and while correlation is not causation, it does provide a theory that needs to be investigated and then scientifically refuted (or not) - and so while my issues may be with the president or the congress or the people for making a decision to send troops where they should not be sent... I will follow your lead and instead hate the troops.. it may not be their fault, but they are the last straw and we have learnt to blame the last straw.
how does this relate to your post? I have also had long thought sessions on the prison system. what exactly does it achieve. it seems there is nothing to be gained by incarceration. we do like to see the people who have caused suffering to suffer in turn... but when their time is up they will not be any wiser. there are studies about recidivism that prove this.
there was this artistic director with wisdom and faith who acted the way he did and that resulted in making of several movies that appealed to particular types of people. it is not just vin diesel that made money... the people employed directly in the production, release and distribution of the movie made money as well. e.g. A person selling popcorn at an outlet in Mumbai made money. Maybe directly affecting the income of a million families and indirectly many million more.
If a similar 'punishment' was meted out every roadside drug dealer or car jacker or pick pocket or vandal or what have you... ('victimless' crimes) we would probably have so many rich industrialists, businessmen, professionals and so on who would have contributed directly and indirectly to the standard of living/employment of billions of people.
The christianity based/eurothink system of justice must be replace by a more positive one. where instead of being punished with doing things that are no use to you, you get punished by doing things that will .....
sorry for stopping on a cliffhanger... i dont want to do your work for you... try to complete this.

Nah, more like the movie where the girl gets caught shoplifting in a pawn shop, so the owner makes her get on her knees in the back room.
If I had a delorian, I'd go back to that theatre. You would be watching the fast and furious and see him fade right out of the movie.

Wrong again, this is more like The NeverEnding Story where young Bastian hides from bullies in a creepy ass bookstore and then steals a book which leads to his saving of Fantasia and naming of the Child Like Empress. Bastian then made many other wishes, and had many other amazing adventures... Very similar to Vin.

Dracomortua · 2 points · Posted at 15:27:20 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
That does sound brilliant. Guessing the plot twist: (like Eddie Murphy in nearly all his films) folks with criminal minds make brilliant police officers. In the process of getting his diamond he saves lives and wins cool cop friends.
Edit: Eddie Murphy as 'donkey' made a terrible cop. Possible exception.

I always maintain that Chronicles was the the best of the three, followed by Riddick, and then Pitch Black. Not that Pitch Black isn't good, it's just Chronicles is a goddamn great sci-fi adventure, and aspires to some very interesting philosophical ideals and dialogues.
lennybird · 1 points · Posted at 14:27:13 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Totally agree with you! Riddick, and even more so Pitch Black were low(er) budget thriller films that didn't really explore a universe that a classic sci-fi romp tends to do. Chronicles of Riddick had everything you want. It's of course personal preference that I just prefer sci-fi over thrillers, too. One of the top sci-fi films I'd say that I've probably seen at least 30 times.
TocTheElder · 2 points · Posted at 14:32:09 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
I really liked the similarities between Pitch Black and Riddick for some reason, and it makes me hope the next one is a big budget adventure mirroring Chronicles. I quite like the back and forth, gives it a bit of variety.
I've also watched Chronicles numerous times, one of my favourite sci-fi films. Great cast, great plot, great visuals. Vin isn't a great actor by any means, but he's perfect as Riddick. He has made that character his own, and I couldn't see anyone else playing him now.
lennybird · 1 points · Posted at 14:46:13 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Don't get me wrong—I really enjoy Pitch Black and Riddick and I've certainly seen Pitch Black several times! I really hope you're right that they alternate back and forth as the thrillers, in sacrificing breadth for depth, sort of help explore Riddick's character more richly.
And yeah I agree—to me Vin is to Riddick as Arnold is to the Terminator. There will only be one Terminator, and there will only be one Riddick.
bsukenyan · 1 points · Posted at 17:52:34 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)

Life is unfair in lots of ways anyway and chance and luck play a big role in performing arts success like this, and in performing arts people look for charisma and I'm guessing Vin and his buddy had it when the director caught them which led to the director using them.
bebop_remix · 5 points · Posted at 14:20:15 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
kids will never learn.
except they did.
hey i got an idea. let's teach kids instead of throwing them into prison to rot. they weren't rewarded; they were given opportunity. even prisoners get opportunities.

Would you feel bad over some poor no name boxer not getting his shot with Cus D'Amato? Because Mike Tyson was a juvi at Tryon when he was 12 and was taken under the trainer's wing to become a heavyweight champion later on at 19. I dunno why you're feeling torn - maybe you're just being a debbie downer or something
bigted41 · 1 points · Posted at 14:22:25 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
some people recognize that rampaging kids like this just need something to do. this person saw something in mr diesel that he recognized as talent and nurtured it instead of punishing for being a bored kid with a little spare time.
blitheobjective · 1 points · Posted at 14:32:17 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Random chance of whose paths cross in life.
bigted41 · 1 points · Posted at 14:35:14 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
you missed the part where he likely worked his ass off to get to where he is. don't think that people that are "discovered" haven't worked just as hard or harder than anyone else. he didn't become a millionaire the day after this guy started giving him lessons.
blitheobjective · 1 points · Posted at 14:41:02 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
I didn't miss anything. It's easier to work your ass off for something with someone encouraging you and nurturing you towards it. Still requires work that Vin put in, and a good amount of luck which Vin got, but again so many kids would love that personal attention and encouragement who will never get it because they weren't up to no good.
bigted41 · 1 points · Posted at 16:07:43 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
you don't have to be up to no good to get that attention

But that’s when I felt the handcuffs go on.”

intredasted · 1 points · Posted at 13:48:04 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
It is pretty obvious.

Personally I don't see him as a very good actor. I don't feel anything special from him in movies. But that doesn't mean he's a bad actor to other people. Some just like the hard, emotionless personally in the movies he's in.

Only tangentially related, but if you're into war movies go back and re-watch Black Hawk Down and you'll see a ton of familiar faces.

I watched that last week. It was crazy to see all these people I recognize today but were nobody of note when I first saw the film. Riddley Scott sure has an eye for talent.
Great film by the way.

He's still not a good actor. Wouldn't it be crazy if we found out that he's just been constantly breaking into places, only to get caught by various directors and producers and forced into movies?
Edit: okay guys, let's just agree that although he isn't a very good actor, he is successful. Will that work for you?
threecolorless · 29 points · Posted at 13:33:02 on September 11, 2017 · (Permalink)

Fuck Vin Diesel

funny and interesting.
