TIL the SpongeBob pitch to Nickelodeon was so good the executives had to step outside from laughter.

relevant bit from wikipediea:

"In 1997, while pitching the cartoon to Nickelodeon executives, Hillenburg donned a Hawaiian shirt, brought along an "underwater terrarium with models of the characters", and played Hawaiian music to set the theme. The setup was described by Nickelodeon executive Eric Coleman as "pretty amazing". When they were given money and two weeks to write the pilot episode "Help Wanted", Derek Drymon, Stephen Hillenberg, and Nick Jennings returned with what was described by Nickelodeon official Albie Hecht as, "a performance [he] wished [he] had on tape". Although executive producer Derek Drymon described the pitch as stressful, he said it went "very well". Kevin Kay and Hecht had to step outside because they were "exhausted from laughing", which worried the cartoonists."

"Which worried the cartoonists" just dusts that whole paragraph with icing sugar.

SpongeBob was originally going to be named SpongeBoy, and the series was to be called SpongeBoy Ahoy!, but these were both changed, as the name was already trademarked.

In choosing a replacement name, Hillenburg felt that he still had to use the word "Sponge", so that viewers would not mistake the character for a "Cheese Man"

Cheese man sounds pretty good, IMO.

It's a cartoon about a sponge that lives in bikini bottom. His neighbor is a pink starfish. A crab irritates everyone. An obnoxious squid thing with a nose that looks like a penis occasionally shows up.

The imagery is not lost on adults.

Flyingpigfriend · 4 points · Posted at 20:28:17 on September 16, 2015 · (Permalink)

It was on me until you just pointed it out

your-opinions-false · 3 points · Posted at 00:47:10 on September 17, 2015 · (Permalink)

This is rather twisting the characters to get the intended 'meaning'. Mr. Krabs is a crab because crabs are a common sea creature, and he doesn't generally irritate people. At least, that's not the point of his character. He's greedy.

Also, Squidward's nose does not look like a penis. Come on, get your mind out of the gutter!

As for Bikini Bottom, that's a clever pun based on it being at the bottom of Bikini Atoll, and the fact that it's a type of swimwear. I'm doubtful that SpongeBob being a sponge tampon is intended either. It's possible, but I don't think that most women go swimming during a period with a sponge tampon in the bottom of their bikini.

Why couldn't they laugh inside?

SusanForeman · 40 points · Posted at 16:22:04 on September 16, 2015 · (Permalink)

They initially pitched it as a serious documentary about the effects of nuclear fallout on waterlife

It's harder to do than crying.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 20:19:00 on September 16, 2015 · (Permalink)

So they needed more space to build momentum for some hardcore laughing because the building was only big enough for/zoned for crying? Is this the idea?

Have you ever heard of a haiku

ValdemarSt · -10 points · Posted at 19:05:05 on September 16, 2015 · (Permalink)

Yeah. And i know it's HaikuberryFin. He's everywhere. This is nothing special. So there's not really anything that should check out.

Either way, welcome to reddit.

Jesus christ. How old are you guys? I fucking know it's a haiku. That's all he does. It's not special, since he's everywhere.

"username checks out, can confirm, huckberryfin". Wow really? Awesome, guy. Thanks for the confirmation and the checking out of his username. What about posting a relevant XKCD while you're at it?

I've gained great friendships that started out with Spongebob references.

Ratman_84 · 7 points · Posted at 18:45:20 on September 16, 2015 · (Permalink)

I was 16 when the show came on, so I was already over the cartoon phase, but I'll make an exception for Spongebob. It's hilarious for a "kid" show. Weird to think the show is 15 years old already.

I think it's all bout the intention. It was "good" because it was intended to be funny. If they were pitching a documentary, or a drama, stepping outside in order to laugh would be a very bad sign.

How do you even pitch a show to a studio and network? That sounds like a very difficult meeting to setup.

firegecko5 · 6 points · Posted at 14:45:36 on September 16, 2015 · (Permalink)

I think some of them had previously worked with Nickelodeon on other shows, like Rocko's Modern Life.

VisVirtusque · 1 points · Posted at 00:43:52 on September 17, 2015 · (Permalink)

I remember seeing adds for Spongebob before it came out and thought "This looks so stupid". Despite this my brothers and I watched the premiere and it was hilarious. I specifically remember the first time I laughed at the show was when he was struggling to lift weights with his stuffed-animal barbell, then he drops the weight and it floats down and makes a squeaky noise as it hits the ground.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 17:55:45 on September 17, 2015 · (Permalink)

I've been a huge SpongeBob fan since my kids got me into it in the early 2000's, such a fantastic show.

type_E · 1 points · Posted at 14:28:41 on October 4, 2015 · (Permalink)

Even though I'll agree Spongebob went downhill after the first movie (maybe the first movie even set up all that would be wrong, with overly childish goofy goober and overly grim and dour and totally mood-killing Plankton), I find the idea that the new episodes are SOOOOO bad that you'd rather get robbed and raped than watch them... a bit much. Also, Wikipedia only gives a passing mention to the whole decline thing, so it makes me wonder if it's really that big of a deal.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 13:36:09 on October 5, 2015 · (Permalink)

I still like the newer ones, one of my kids prefers them while the other likes the older stuff.

Interesting.

I've never even cracked a smile at that show, let alone actually laughed. It's like the Bob's Burgers for kids!

OK, OK, it's not that bad. "Bob's Burgers Bad" is reserved for only the worst.
