The best part is, at a few weeks old , babies can barely see past a few inches, also are incapable of understanding language. So this man is obviously a genius, a baby genius perhaps.

Technically, I don't think he forced it because his muscle control was so weak that it just sorta plopped out on its own. You're giving him too much credit.
Little did the baby know that "TheStabbingHobo" is not just a nickname for you... But actually the expression on his face also included the understanding that you will kill him one day, or the other way around. Without actual words of course... โบ

Do you ever find imaverysmart cringey though? I could never say anything on there about it but I always get the feeling that the people who make the posts feel like they are "imaverysmart" compared to the smarties. Like when people go over the top laughing at people on cringepics. Surely other people see that that is cringey.
That's pretty much what makes up every subreddit that posts pictures specifically to make fun of someone.

I know what you mean. They sometimes start talking about how the Iamverysmart person clearly doesn't understand astrophysics because if they did, they would know this and this thing that's actually true in astrophysics.
I don't know any of that shit. I just go to laugh at people who think their intelligence makes them superior to everyone else or claim they have an IQ of 180.
I was talking to a class of people like this once and we were talking about religion. All of them wore their atheistic badge of honor and laughed at any believers in the class because they were so desperate to seen as smart they all jumped on the smart people superiority bandwagon. It was then that I noticed that smart people will not always be successful because although their test scores were good they were all serious spergs and showed it any chance they got.

/r/iamverysmart has one of the most toxic community out there. I was going here for the circlejerk and for the lulz but I rapidly saw that they were definitely serious and not joking about being superior to those in their posts.

This subreddit is cringy as fuck as well. I browse /r/all and the posts that make me saddest for humanity are generally here, not because they successfully called someone out but because we are a species of 6 billion people and 90% of the garbage here probably happened to multiple people. Often I can imagine it happening to a few people a week worldwide. And when it isn't so obviously possible that its sad that they dont believe it, its so obviously a yarn that it's like hearing someone calling out Game of Thrones for not being the truth. Good detectivework captain fucknuts.
Internet stories are the new bar story. No one ever believed them and the only one not having a good time is the guy who keeps calling out the story teller. NO ONE believes that guy, ever, but suspending your disbelief and treating it like fiction can at least make it interesting and better than "durr hows the weather?". This entire subreddit is an imverysmart post. "I'm so smart I figured out this guy didnt really jump a ferrari over a canyon" Everyone else "We know, but thanks for highlighting it in unnecessary detail, captain buzzkill".
Its people with no lives congratulation each other on figuring out the lies told by other people with no lives because they are so enlightened to see through the bullshit that no one else could ever see. Give me a break people.

It has been proven that babies cannot create complex memories before about the age of three. Think back to your first memory; it's probably from when you were about three.
Wait, what I meant to say was that this middle-age man remembers the $100% truth!
Indeed, it seems that traumatic or highly stressful events for children can be remembered as early as 24 months old. It may be because the children are still thinking about the event even as they get older, and so it eventually gets placed into their long-term memory.
But in any case, OPs post shows that that completely honest man was able to retain a memory from when he was just weeks old which is absolutely possible.
Obviously the memory of their faces was really traumatic.

I remember sitting in the back of our car with my brother next to me. I was looking out the window and I saw a lawn with white ducks and a flagpole on it. This was in october 1987 and I was 1 year and 8 months old. It was the day when we went to pick up our dachshund puppy. It's more like a fuzzy photograph than a "moving" memory. I asked my mother about it and she was a bit shocked that I could actually describe the breeders yard.
I remember getting pushed around in one of those little kid cars when my family lived in our first house, I don't know exactly how old I was but it had to be when I was around 15 months to 2 years old, though it's possible it was even later. I do have a lot more memories from when I was 3-4 though.

Its also very hard for adults to recall infant memories because when they are infants they encode memories in a non verbal way because they lack verbal abilities. Instead they are encoded in a non verbal way. There is a paper by Gabrielle Simcock and Harlene Hayne that give more info. Found Here
I have a few very faint memories from before my family moved to where we live now, and that was when I was 2 and a half. They aren't traumatic or even interesting, my most vivid memory from that time involved hiding behind the living room chair and chewing the adhesive off of tape. I described what that old house looked like to my mother when I was much older and she confirmed, so the memories aren't completely false. I was already talking around that age, though, so I imagine being able to put my experiences into words helped them stick.
I might have even dismissed this man's claims of having a memory as a newborn, but then he said he thought of the people around him as "stupid creatures," which every infant thinks and so is in fact true.
I remember my sister having a seizure. I had to be around 2.5 because she was still unable to crawl or walk. I also remember the house next to ours burning down and it was when my mom was pregnant with that sister so I had to be 2ish as I am 2 years 4 months older than her. What I remember is my uncle running in and crying and firefighters everywhere. I later learned that my uncle was visiting and ran into the house because the mom said her kid was in there and he found the kid dead hiding in a closet. And I remember my dad playing drums and me trying to get to him and not being allowed. My dad stopped playing for the band right after my second sister, the one mentioned above, was born. Those are my earliest memories. So I would say sometime between 2 and 3 years old are my earliest memories but they are very sporadic.
From what I remember Jani, the youngest person ever to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, had memories of being a baby. She could also recognize shapes at one month and by three she could do division and multiplication.
I do have a very early memory, apparently from about a 1 1/2 years old. Being carried in to a very distinctive hotel, with a big open air atrium and tapestries on the wall. There's no thoughts associated with it but I think the visual impact on my developing brain must have left an impression, since I can still visualise it now.
Aqui87 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 02:19:57 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
is this true? i have this memory of my mom cleaning me after i shitted myself when i was a baby
I used to think that my earliest memories were dreams. I remember telling my dad when I was an early teen that I had a dream that he and I were riding around in an antique fire truck throwing tootsie rolls in a parade. He told me that actually happened and it was the bicentennial 4th of July parade and I would have been 2 years 8months which is pretty close to 3.
Yeah, I can distinctly two very remarkable, and in one case extremely sad, incidents that happened between being two and three. Not so sure about that.
Do you have other confirmation that those events happened, because nearly all research points to the fact that the hippocampus usually it not developed enough for long term memory formation until age 3. Maybe slightly earlier in some humans. But false memories are also really common, because our memory is actually very very malleable.
me too, i told my parents that i remembered being on a ski lift and my ski fell off and one of my dad's friends was skiing under us and came up the mountain to give my ski back.
Childhood amnesia, also called infantile amnesia, is the inability of adults to retrieveepisodic memories before the age of 2โ4 years, as well as the period before age 10 of which adults retain fewer memories than might otherwise be expected given the passage of time. For the first 1โ2 years of life, brain structures such as the limbic system, which holds the hippocampus and the amygdala and is involved in memory storage, are not yet fully developed. Research has demonstrated that children can remember events from before the age of 3โ4 years, but that these memories decline as children get older.
I remember something from when I was 6 months old, but I guess it's not complex. I told my mom I remembered being in a chair and there were people at a table and there was a man with a red shirt and a black cowboy hat. Nothing really specific. Just the room and the people. Apparently that was my Dad's birthday.
My first memory is from ten months old. First two, actually. Had no fucking clue what was going on or what anything was. Described it to my mother a few years ago and she said it was just a trip to see my great aunt when I was ten months old. I probably remembered it because it was my first long car ride to somewhere new and scary. It was pretty stressful tbh as the first memory was going over a bridge in the car and my mother has an extreme crying phobia of them.
Then there's nothing until I was two and burnt myself while being stupid with a candle because the TV said that yellow flames were the coldest.
I remember things that may have been from the age of three, but I also think I remember a few big deal moments from slightly younger. I remember bouncing in me little bouncer prior to being able to walk. I remember "thinking in full sentences but for some reason I couldn't talk those sentences in my head out loud.
They used to be clearer from when I was young but I definintely remember stuff from when my mom was a nanny for akid my age and the playing we used to do. She nannied for him from about 6 months to about 2.5 years. I have lots of memories from that time.
I'm not saying that they may not be somewhat distorted by now, but I remember them. I definitely didn't have douchebag, judgemental thoughts like these guys.
What this guy is saying is most likely BS, but I am skeptical to completely dismiss his recollection of hand.
Or maybe i have false memories built on flashes from that age.... but not "real" memories. I don't want to believe that but 'm almost positive I did form memories that have laste before the age of three.
[deleted] ยท -15 points ยท Posted at 19:08:37 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Sorry, that is wrong. I have memories from when i was 6 weeks old and plenty of memories from before age 3. The only reason I know i was 6 weeks old was because my parents photographed me that day and told me i was 6 weeks old in that picture. I remember them sitting me on the bed and I fell over. I remember how soft the comforter on the bed was and I remember they were in a square pattern. I remember my dad sitting me up after i fell over and smiling at me and then sitting me up against the pillows on the bed so they could get a good picture. I vaguely remember the camera though, I'm guessing it was a camera as it just looked like a big black box they were holding. (it was the 1970s)
This is why I am skeptical, even of my own memories. People claim to remember stuff from an early age. The ones who mention having a photograph from that exact time make me even more skeptical. I remember reading that people can have "fake" memories of an event. The memory itself is real, but that memory isn't of the event. It's basically just a construct. They remember the events in the picture. You keep remembering the same thing more and more, and eventually it feels real, and you can no longer separate it.
My earliest memory is from christmas when I was 3. There are pictures of that Christmas, but I can't be certain if they're my own, or a construct from seeing the pictures. My earliest memory I am certain is real is from when I was 6 and broke my wrist. Nobody was taking pictures.
[deleted] ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 19:26:51 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I have other memories before age 2. I know that because I remember a place we lived that we moved from when i was 18 months old. I remember things like my Dad watching horse racing on a round TV and saying "there they go!" every time the horses started out of the gate. I remember climbing into his leather recliner right before he got home from work. I would hear him come in and get in it hoping he would let me sit there. I remember the mobile in my crib and trying to grab them as they turned around.
After reading that article it says that children can remember from an early age but tend to not to be able to recall as they get older. I'm guessing that I remember because I must have reinforced those memories by thinking about them quite often through the years.
Pithong ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:24:52 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Eh, I'm going with "that memory was formed later". The younger the child, the easier it is to form a "false memory". I read an article where they showed a bunch of kindergarten age kids videos of swimming with dolphins, then asked them all 2 weeks later if they had themselves actually swam with dolphins and like 40% of them said, "yes, I remember swimming with real live dolphins", basically. And I've heard of cases where a parent will simply tell a child (many times) about an event and eventually the child believes and remembers it happening.
You may have the memory, but it's unlikely that it formed in your brain at 6 weeks old. You probably built it up a few years later.
I hate these sorts of people. You weren't a special fucking snowflake. Your brain is not that developed when you are a baby. And baby talk/making faces at babies helps with their cognitive development. Mocking it doesn't make you seem enlightened.
Oh, I wish this was universally true. I see enough shit like this from my own peer group and younger. I'm 27, so I would consider anyone from ~23 to ~31 to be in my "peer group

It might not be entirely his fault, fabricated memories are a thing. Maybe, especially when he was younger, he thought what it would be like to be a new born, came up with this story and decided the only reason he came up with it so fast was because he actually remembered it.

Really? Are you that dumb? Humans of New York is famous. If the New York times wanted to interview me, of course Id do it. HONY isn't that big, but people aren't that afraid to have their picture taken.
I'll never forget my first memory, I was swimming with a bunch of other folks toward this big ball, we all tried to get inside but I was the only one who made it. I sat there contemplating everything for 9 months before I got bored and left.

It sounds unbelievable, so we can make all the jokes we want, but babies have great cognitive abilities, they are fast learners, and a lot of the abilities humans possess are innate. This man, believe it or not, was a case study for this sort of science nearly 30 years ago. You can watch the documentary if you want, it is called "Look Who's Talking".
Edit: Wow thanks for the gold /u/Manicaeks, I am glad real scientists like yourself are keenly aware the importance of hard hitting documentaries like this. If only others would be so bold as to actually watch true science at work.
Long term memory formation and having a sense of self/other are innate to humans, but not at newborn age. Babies don't pass the mirror test until 18 months. The hippocampus isn't formed enough for long term memory formation until roughly 3 years of age, give or take a few months.
Then it's an extremely rare trait, not one existent in most humans. For the vast majority of humans, the concept of self doesn't seem to develop until 18 months and long term memory formation doesnt develop until 3 years. This guy, even if legitimate, is acting like a smug cunt.
If true, you're exceptionally rare. Biologically the hippocampus isn't developed enough for long term memory formation. At least for the vast majority of humans on this planet. More likely it is a false memory, which are scarily common. Elizabeth Loftus found that most memories before the age of 3 (and many after that age) are false, either completely or to a large degree.
I've heard the same about memory formation, that's why it surprised me so much. The memory has been somewhat verified though...and my memory also behaves strangely as i'm known to have a memory for even small details that happened way way back. I always thought it was because i have no life and therefore no new memories. But being exceptionally rare sounds better... ;)
I still don't think it's true. He may think he remembers that, but that doesn't mean it's an actual memory. Either way, I'll check the doc out when I get home.
A guy at work told me he spoke such good English because, as a baby, his crib was close to the tv. We live in a non-English speaking country, just to be clear. So yeah this seems to be equally true.
The earliest memory I have is when I was around 1 or 2 years old. I know that because the earliest memory I have I was still in a high chair and the house that I lived in at that time I was only there until I was 2. I actually remember what my house looked like, but I only have 3 different memories from that house.
"What stupid creatures," he thought, in a language he had not yet learned involving concepts he could not yet grasp.
It had been shown that infants aren't even aware that there are minds other than their own. There is no way they would be able to understand the concept of a quantifiable difference in the superiority of two minds. That's just stupid.
So just to play devil's advocate, this is at least plausible. There are a number of exceptional memory "syndromes" that can make this possible. I personally am a savant and have memories that are crystal clear to me from a very young age that can be verified by my parents. That said, those memories are like watching a film. I can only see the image. Very few of those do I remember the exact thoughts running through my mind at the time. The ones that I do remember are based off context clues. For example, I remember being in an argument with my older brother about who the boss (him or my parents) was when I was 3 and he was 4. It's pretty easy to deduct my memories and emotions from a memory like that.
I'm not saying this guy's story is 100% true. If he's is anything like me, this could very well have happened, but I doubt he remembers thinking they were stupid. But then again, I'm no expert. I just know what I remember.
EDIT: Just reread what the guy said. I didn't realize he said 1 or 2 weeks after he was born. I feel stupid.

I would let you go if this person was one or two years old, but at one or two weeks old a lot of neural cells are still going through massive apoptosis so first he has to have concepts down like "creatures" and retain the visual memory then he would need to keep those bunch of neuronal cells alive throughout his life.
One of my favorite books, Autobiography of a Yogi, starts off the same way. He recollects his life as a yogi, passing his soul from a yogi in the Himalayan mountains to an infant, fully aware of everything around him but feeling hopelessly trapped because he couldn't speak yet. Such a great read and if you haven't checked it out I'd recommend it. Even if you don't believe in the stories he tells, listen to the messages like how one should interpret every spiritual text.
And fuck Humans of New York for posting. All of their article stories seem like bullshit and should be posted on this sub.

I like that he mentions the story of people pulling silly faces to him as a key memory of his infancy and skips right over those memories of him shitting his pants time and time again (not to mention his mother dabbing at his a-hole and nuts with a wet wipe to clean his crap off)
not that stupid really it's quite likely he believes it I've got issues with the way my memory is processed and stored and I misremember or completely form fake memories from the dreams I have

I remember a similar memory from being a toddler, but unable to express it and becoming frustrated when my "words" were only taken as cute noises.
Memory of events doesn't develop until around age three because the brain isn't developed enough until then. It's impossible to remember being an infant.
Doubt all you want, but I actually can as well. The only difference is that I recalled an event that I wouldn't have known unless I remembered... My parents both doubted me until I told them what I remember seeing. (A big spider on the wall only 2 weeks after I was born)
Idk, i have about 3 or 4 memories of being an infant, and I remember the way I felt, but not really thoughts like he says. I remember being carried by my mother and a bus went by and the noise was just horrible and I started bawling so hard, I don't think I'll ever forget it, even when I'm an old man.
Sources? Also, there's a difference between remembering images and thinking distinct thoughts about how you're better than people before you even know what a silly face is.

I could never say anything on there about it but I always get the feeling that the people who make the posts feel like they are "imaverysmart" compared to the smarties. Like when people go over the top laughing at people on cringepics. Surely other people see that that is cringey.

I might have even dismissed this man's claims of having a memory as a newborn, but then he said he thought of the people around him as "stupid creatures," which every infant thinks and so is in fact true.
phoenixink ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:52:22 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Do you have other confirmation that those events happened, because nearly all research points to the fact that the hippocampus usually it not developed enough for long term memory formation until age 3. Maybe slightly earlier in some humans. But false memories are also really common, because our memory is actually very very malleable.

(it was the 1970s)
lilmul123 ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 19:15:54 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Are you absolutely sure about that? It's possible that you have developed that "memory" based on the apparent photograph that was taken of you. I'm sorry, but the science says that it is literally impossible for infants to form memories at that age. I hate to link you to Wikipedia, but there is a whole article about it, and nowhere does it mention that memories can be formed before age 2.
Edit: The Wikipedia entry actually even talks about this idea here.
just_an_ordinary_guy ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:18:09 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It might not be entirely his fault, fabricated memories are a thing. Maybe, especially when he was younger, he thought what it would be like to be a new born, came up with this story and decided the only reason he came up with it so fast was because he actually remembered it.

ConBrio93 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 17:52:27 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Long term memory formation and having a sense of self/other are innate to humans, but not at newborn age. Babies don't pass the mirror test until 18 months. The hippocampus isn't formed enough for long term memory formation until roughly 3 years of age, give or take a few months.
davebees ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 19:14:15 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
seriously check out Heckerlingโs documentary on the subject. food for thought.
ConBrio93 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 19:17:40 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Then it's an extremely rare trait, not one existent in most humans. For the vast majority of humans, the concept of self doesn't seem to develop until 18 months and long term memory formation doesnt develop until 3 years. This guy, even if legitimate, is acting like a smug cunt.
yourparentss ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:32:57 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
My first memory is from when i was 18 months old.
ConBrio93 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 21:19:03 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
If true, you're exceptionally rare. Biologically the hippocampus isn't developed enough for long term memory formation. At least for the vast majority of humans on this planet. More likely it is a false memory, which are scarily common. Elizabeth Loftus found that most memories before the age of 3 (and many after that age) are false, either completely or to a large degree.
yourparentss ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:10:21 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I've heard the same about memory formation, that's why it surprised me so much. The memory has been somewhat verified though...and my memory also behaves strangely as i'm known to have a memory for even small details that happened way way back. I always thought it was because i have no life and therefore no new memories. But being exceptionally rare sounds better... ;)

EDNivek ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 20:21:24 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

My sister has a memory of something that my mother confirmed to have happened, from when she was an infant. It was a boring regular moment but she remembered it.

I actually remember a small part of my early childhood. Three memories from 3-5. All of them involving me getting up to badass shit.
Garthenius ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:03:55 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I have some exteremely vague memories since I was very young (before being able to walk), mostly related to unfamiliar environments.

I like that he mentions the story of people pulling silly faces to him as a key memory of his infancy and skips right over those memories of him shitting his pants time and time again (not to mention his mother dabbing at his a-hole and nuts with a wet wipe to clean his crap off)
playingketchup ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:10:54 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Not even kidding, I spoke fluent Spanish before my first birthday. Ugh..commoners.

not that stupid really it's quite likely he believes it I've got issues with the way my memory is processed and stored and I misremember or completely form fake memories from the dreams I have
jlo095 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:57:44 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I remember a similar memory from being a toddler, but unable to express it and becoming frustrated when my "words" were only taken as cute noises.

Memory of events doesn't develop until around age three because the brain isn't developed enough until then. It's impossible to remember being an infant.

am I the only one who took this as a joke?

Doubt all you want, but I actually can as well. The only difference is that I recalled an event that I wouldn't have known unless I remembered... My parents both doubted me until I told them what I remember seeing. (A big spider on the wall only 2 weeks after I was born)
LaFamilia ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:19:20 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Idk, i have about 3 or 4 memories of being an infant, and I remember the way I felt, but not really thoughts like he says. I remember being carried by my mother and a bus went by and the noise was just horrible and I started bawling so hard, I don't think I'll ever forget it, even when I'm an old man.

Well it could just be facebook clickbait but yeah some people can remember back to that age, so why not him.
wayne_fox ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:13:09 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Sources? Also, there's a difference between remembering images and thinking distinct thoughts about how you're better than people before you even know what a silly face is.

Middle-aged man says he remembers being an infant.

My earliest memory is of around 2~3.
RedditUsername123456 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:07:07 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Same, and even then they're hardly even memories, they're more like I have random images in my mind without much order or clarity
S00rabh ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 04:47:16 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I do have memories.
Of path my mom use to take while carrying me. I remember people and even some buildings.
OfHyenas ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:18:02 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
My earliest memory is as of today. This morning, I was eating... I was eating... Uh-h-h... Shit.

Guess what, it does happen. I can remember crawling at age 1 year, I knocked over a plant behind a couch near a living room window. My mom confirmed the story. I can remember ridiculous amounts of detail from my childhood.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:53:27 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Of course it does happen.
Do you think the mods would allow a story here if it wasn't $100% true?
robby7345 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:20:11 on March 19, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Can the mods confirm tom's story? His mom is one of the mods right?
[deleted] ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 00:06:47 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I don't think anyone interpreted that as someone actually making that claim. It was supposed to be amusing.

I actually do remember snippets of memory from infancy,
Then again, I'm only 16 and I can't remember having had such coherent thoughts as "What stupid creatures."

Remember when /r/thathappened was about pointing out people's bullshit stories and not people using exaggeration and rhetoric?
wayne_fox ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 06:19:45 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
That's still what I see when I check it. Do you believe this man?
YeltsinYerMouth ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 09:48:46 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I don't think it was meant as a literal statement but as a way of saying "I've always thought people are stupid".
Still a dumb thing to say, but more suited to /r/iamverysmart than to here.
wayne_fox ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:14:08 on March 20, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
If he's not meaning it literally, he's not doing a good job of conveying it.
