One of the key selling points when I bought my house was the wall-mounted pencil sharpener at the bottom of the basement stairs!
Last house we lived in had 2 wall mounts in the basement work room. The Apsco Giant and my personal favorite, the Apsco Midget. Took the giant to work and the midget made the move to our new house in the garage. Just wall mount on a corner to save your knuckles, dummies.
Those pencil sharpeners actually take a seriously effort from kids to fuck up. My mom has one in her preschool class that only the teachers can use that has been going strong for at least 25 years. Put one in an elementary or middle school though, and they'll try torquing the pencil as hard as they can at every angle until they hear something snap.
Also, kids trying to shave down the metal on their erasers really dulls down the blade.
Cuz itโs old so the teachers that have them still have had them absolutely destroyed by their students. Same with the wall mounted crank ones. They can be amazing but if they arenโt sharp they just fuck your pencil.
I didnt find an insanely god tier one until the second half of the second semester of the senior year. Now I bow to it every time I enter and leave AP Macro
Yo, at my SAT today I stood up and popped my pencil in the top-left one for 1.2 seconds and sat down. The next poor soul goes up and holds it in for 8 seconds! He must've lost like an inch of pencil. I wanted to say something but I was speechless. He pulled it out and holds the next one in for the same time.
Hey man maybe it's not my place to give advice, but I wish someone had told me this before taking the exam: keep the grammar answers as concise (short) as possible.
I noticed that redundancy was a big problem in our texts.
I would recommend you invest in like a 50 dollar software program(a decent one may even be a lot cheaper) that prepares you for the SAT(most parents wouldn't mind if you ask them to buy one). No test is as important as that, no need to not get a good scholarship or be forced to go to a not as good college because you decided to wing it. When I was a youth I was told the first SAT score we took is viewed with more weight as repeat tests, I don't know if it is the same.
Check out the free SAT Studying Khan Academy hasโ it is really good as it is convenient (you can use it on your phone, in which you can use it when at the grocery store, waiting for something, etc) and it is personalized for what your weaknesses are
I wouldn't pay for one. Khan academy has a program in conjunction with the college board for free that will either take your last test (or the past), and focus practice on the questions you missed, or just give general test prep stuff if you haven't taken one yet.
Kaplan for sure, they have been making it for decades and have it down to science I am sure. Princeton Review has also been around for decades.
Edit: I just googled it and appears I am out of touch and old. I would recommend you research it and make sure to get an up to date software program though.
I strongly disagree. Less and less colleges are taking the SAT as seriously as they used to. If you have good grades before your SAT, an okay SAT score will be fine. One of my friends had like a 92 or so throughout his 4 years and had like a 1100 on the SAT and got into most of his schools, which were very prestigious.
Also most colleges super score so they take the best of every section. If you take it multiple times, only the best ones matter.
Hey I took the SAT 4 times and I finally hit my goal (1400) when I visited r/SAT! The UWorld code they gave me has helped me and a ton of my friends :~)
If you took the PSAT and did well on it, the SAT will be pretty easy. In my experience, the SAT ended up being a hell of a lot easier than the PSAT. I'm not sure why, it just was. I even took the PSAT again later just to make sure it wasnt just me learning or something and I struggled on it.

We had a couple special kids in my auto tech class. (Dont worry, it was as safe as could possibly be, most of the time...) One of them would go up and hold it in there for about 30 seconds at a time. Got to a point where someone would tell "IT'S SHARPENED!" every time it was in there more than 10 seconds.
We weren't being mean or anything, actually he loved most of us. It was a sort of "only we can fuck with him" kind of thing. Nothing bad, just light jokes that he understood. Kid learned nothing in that class though. Couldn't use a wrench by the end of the first year.
Oh I remember that one now! Yeah that was my essay prompt, too. Man, I really didn't expect to get a reading that I didn't agree with. It's harder to analyze that way ._.
Ya, I took it yesterday and god those passages were horrible. Got it near the end off the section so I had to deal with the time crunch and my mind was all foggy after reading all the previous passages O_O
I would always put mine in until I could tell it was all the way sharp because it sounds a little different and you have to start really pushing to grind it down.

Seriously though. When was the last time you needed to use the big hole in a pencil sharpener?
And you have to tell all your friends to use the big one and all of them complain about it breaking the pencil after they used the small one and youโve told that fucker that you could sharpen it for them but they donโt listen and now have a broken pencil and I have a broken sharpener.
I read somewhere the big one is to form the point, while the small hole you use to create the clean, smooth point. You donโt solely use the big one or the small one for your pencil. In other words, you warm up the pencil with the big hole and finish it off with the small one.
I could be wrong though, but I swore Iโve read or heard that somewhere.
It essentially creates different tips (haha) and Iโve used it a lot doing drawing and shit, but never school stuff. The big one creates a shorter cone, quicker point, less exposed lead, and the small one creates a longer cone with more exposed lead.
Different sizes of eyeliner and lip pencils! I use the large hole about once a week to sharpen my favorite bronze eyeshadow crayon from NYX and every day I use the smaller one to sharpen my eyebrow pencil.
The brown box at the bottom is the best one. And should be followed by a razor blade. Gtfo.

I had an old Panasonic that looked just like that, to this day that thing is the best pencil sharpener I've ever used.
I have one like that, it has to be from the 80โs and it says Made in Japan. Found it at a Goodwill for $2.50 and it has worked flawlessly for me for about 5 years now that Iโve had it!

Yep, I found an old Panasonic at a thrift store about 4 years ago and it's the only electric pencil sharpener I've ever owned besides a stupid battery powered one I had in elementary school.
Agreed! Im a traveling teacher so I have a collection of pencils and colors with me always, and I like to have them sharpened and ready to go. This beast sits on my desk at home and I love it!
My parents have had one for as long as I can remember. It was the best, sharpened it perfectly and didnt take any extra off it would just stop shaving once it had a needle point.

I have seen some lovely brown box pencil sharpeners & I have seen ones where the unsharpened pencils straight form the box will probably write better than the pencil you just stuck in the hell hole

There is a difference between the solidly build, hard steel case, hand crank, which is not the one in the pic, and the one in the pic. So both of you may be correct.
Honestly this conversation is pointless because the handheld sharpeners are the true masterclass regardless.

Agreed, we have that one and it rocks. Every pencil sharpener should open from the top. If you have to push the pencil in horizontally, then you also have to use your other hand to steady it so you can push the pencil in with the proper force. Top down ftw.
But trying to find an electric sharpener that sharpens, instead of eating your pencil is almost impossible. I have a manual, small sharpener that I use everyday, and it works like a charm everytime. I got a pack of ten of those things at the dollar store because all of the electronic ones are broken at my school. Couldn't be happier with it!

Mechanical pencils are much more expensive if you're looking for ones that can be refilled and won't break in 2 weeks. Considering how often I lose my writing utensils, I'll probably go through mechanical pencils quite quickly.
Also depends on how well you maintain your lead supply, lol.
I just buy a 24 pack of those bic mechanical pencils for like $9 twice a year. Each of em has 3 leads and I normally lose them before they run out of lead lmao.

I have a bottom right one that is from the mid 80's and it is awesome! Also, if you don't blow on the pencil once it comes out you are doing something wrong.

In 6th grade we had that hand crank one in the middle-left and it worked better than anything I've ever seen. The pencils always came out clean and sharp. Sharp to leave a faint scar on the back of my hand after I fucked around with another kid while he was holding a pencil.

They either break the lead over and over until you dont have a pencil or it does get pointy but its the fucking wood around the lead, not the lead itself.
Quite franky they are all shit except the little metal one at the top. I'd given up and just went with mechanical pencils after years of frustration.
I am done with pencils. I never will touch one again I just canโt stand the feeling of writing with them. Mechanicals are sometimes ok but after using a fountain pen everything feels cheap as hell
Old faithful in the bottom right never disappointed me, but I can imagine that if they're still using those same models in 2018 then that'd be a problem.
The best pencil sharpeners are the ones that automatically stop when your pencil in done; itโs great bc you donโt have to go through the cycle where you leave it in for too long so the tip breaks, and you have to sharpen it again
So, one of the fishing ones actually works extremely well in my school. 1/2 a second and it's perfect. I assume it's like this because the part your supposed to put the pencil in has only around 6-7 inches to fit. It's so sharp though. 10/10
My American Lit teacher has this one I've never seen but actually works better than the top left one someone. It sharpens my pencil ridiculously fast and even sharper than the one up there. It even has a little blue light that goes off when it's done, and will stop sharpening. It's just amazing and I want one

Those metal hand crank ones are hit and miss. They're a nightmare to work with when the outside casing comes loose. However, there's also one in my math classroom that's the most powerful sharpener I've ever saw. It gave you super sharp, sturdy, elongated tips after only 3 quick turns.
We used to have this game at my school where we would bring different sharpeners to school and flick them around the table to knock each otherโs sharpeners off. The double metal was the best one but the one with the covering got two lives but was weak as shit at knocking anything off. The plastic ones were weak crap and just bounced off the metal one. Everyone hailed the person with the biggest sharpener collection as king. We called it sharpener fight. Ah the nostalgia...
Hard disagree, never had any problems with furthest to the bottom right, but I could never get anything productive out of the crank ones. It would be the furthest down on my tier lists, because half of the time it's already flat out broken, and the other half of the time it's the shittiest pencil sharpener I've ever used.

Fun fact: pencil sharpeners like the one in the top right are often made of Magnesium. If you lighten that up it can burn up to 3000 ยฐC, that will keep on burning under water and even melt glass.

I can say this is straight bullshit, my mom had one sharpener for us 4 kids to use for over 20+ years of pencil sharpening goodness and the bottom right one never failed.
I once had an extremely important test coming up, but no one had a sharpener for my new, unsharpened pencil (It was the first pencil I grabbed on my way out of the house). It got to the point where I had to use my Swiss Army knife to sharpen it crudely.
After the test my friend came up to me and said โI had a sharpener all along, I just wanted to fuck with you before the test.โ
I really wish they would have included scissors. Iโd sometimes just fucking medieval-style sharpen my pencil. Closest I felt like to being a knight. Open the scissors, scrape them against the pencil. Working around until the tip was even and sharp.

Forgot what its call, but I remember my teacher use to have a sharpener that is fully automatic. You just put the pencil in, it will lower the pencil and sharpen it, the raise it back up for you to pick up.
I grew up with the bottom right one. It is to this day the best sharpener Iโve ever used. Never stopped working, pencil was always sharpened perfectly.

They're rare, but extremely-good tier mechanical sharpeners exist. My gov class has one. I don't know what my teacher does to keep that thing in shape, but by god does it sharpen like no other sharpener I've used before.
Where's the really tiny plastic ones with a box for the shavings that barely let's you sharpen 1 new pencil before it fills up, and also doesn't stay on well?
Ive had the 2nd low middle white one for over a decade and though it eats a little slow, as if that's a bad thing..., it always turns my pencil into a weapon.
Anyone that thinks hand-crank sharpeners are shit is a fool that is uses to the ones in elementary that have been beat to oblivion by idiot kids that arenโt even sure to exclusively sharpen pencils in them.
I have hand-cranks that I use that work beautifully. I regulary sharpen my pencils to a perfect tip, a tip too perfect that I have on more than one occasion poked my finger drawing blood reaching into my pocket before a test.

They got rid of it because people kept breaking their pencils just to use the sharpener.
The right-most one in the extremely good tier is terrible. Every time I have to use one it's either blunt or a single molecule of moisture is stopping the grip. I either end up with a blunt pencil or a dirty hand.

Cuz itโs old so the teachers that have them still have had them absolutely destroyed by their students. Same with the wall mounted crank ones. They can be amazing but if they arenโt sharp they just fuck your pencil.

Yo, at my SAT today I stood up and popped my pencil in the top-left one for 1.2 seconds and sat down. The next poor soul goes up and holds it in for 8 seconds! He must've lost like an inch of pencil. I wanted to say something but I was speechless. He pulled it out and holds the next one in for the same time.

I would recommend you invest in like a 50 dollar software program(a decent one may even be a lot cheaper) that prepares you for the SAT(most parents wouldn't mind if you ask them to buy one). No test is as important as that, no need to not get a good scholarship or be forced to go to a not as good college because you decided to wing it. When I was a youth I was told the first SAT score we took is viewed with more weight as repeat tests, I don't know if it is the same.

Check out the free SAT Studying Khan Academy hasโ it is really good as it is convenient (you can use it on your phone, in which you can use it when at the grocery store, waiting for something, etc) and it is personalized for what your weaknesses are

I wouldn't pay for one. Khan academy has a program in conjunction with the college board for free that will either take your last test (or the past), and focus practice on the questions you missed, or just give general test prep stuff if you haven't taken one yet.

Kaplan for sure, they have been making it for decades and have it down to science I am sure. Princeton Review has also been around for decades.
Edit: I just googled it and appears I am out of touch and old. I would recommend you research it and make sure to get an up to date software program though.

I strongly disagree. Less and less colleges are taking the SAT as seriously as they used to. If you have good grades before your SAT, an okay SAT score will be fine. One of my friends had like a 92 or so throughout his 4 years and had like a 1100 on the SAT and got into most of his schools, which were very prestigious.
Also most colleges super score so they take the best of every section. If you take it multiple times, only the best ones matter.

If you took the PSAT and did well on it, the SAT will be pretty easy. In my experience, the SAT ended up being a hell of a lot easier than the PSAT. I'm not sure why, it just was. I even took the PSAT again later just to make sure it wasnt just me learning or something and I struggled on it.

We had a couple special kids in my auto tech class. (Dont worry, it was as safe as could possibly be, most of the time...) One of them would go up and hold it in there for about 30 seconds at a time. Got to a point where someone would tell "IT'S SHARPENED!" every time it was in there more than 10 seconds.
We weren't being mean or anything, actually he loved most of us. It was a sort of "only we can fuck with him" kind of thing. Nothing bad, just light jokes that he understood. Kid learned nothing in that class though. Couldn't use a wrench by the end of the first year.

I read somewhere the big one is to form the point, while the small hole you use to create the clean, smooth point. You donโt solely use the big one or the small one for your pencil. In other words, you warm up the pencil with the big hole and finish it off with the small one.
I could be wrong though, but I swore Iโve read or heard that somewhere.

It essentially creates different tips (haha) and Iโve used it a lot doing drawing and shit, but never school stuff. The big one creates a shorter cone, quicker point, less exposed lead, and the small one creates a longer cone with more exposed lead.

Different sizes of eyeliner and lip pencils! I use the large hole about once a week to sharpen my favorite bronze eyeshadow crayon from NYX and every day I use the smaller one to sharpen my eyebrow pencil.

Can confirm that the brown ones at the bottom were fucking AMAZING 25 years ago but would wear out eventually. Like years, but eventually.
Also, always empty the tray no matter how empty it is. You get the fresh sharpen and your friends have to use your sloppy seconds like the fucking plebs they are.
When the fuck did Exacto start making sharpeners? The bottom right was king when Exacto was just making little knives.

my experiences with the box ones are very hit or miss
I have seen some lovely brown box pencil sharpeners & I have seen ones where the unsharpened pencils straight form the box will probably write better than the pencil you just stuck in the hell hole

Agreed, we have that one and it rocks. Every pencil sharpener should open from the top. If you have to push the pencil in horizontally, then you also have to use your other hand to steady it so you can push the pencil in with the proper force. Top down ftw.

Bottom middle; one side of the pencil is flat because the hole is so wide, and the lead in your pencil disappears for a full inch in.

But trying to find an electric sharpener that sharpens, instead of eating your pencil is almost impossible. I have a manual, small sharpener that I use everyday, and it works like a charm everytime. I got a pack of ten of those things at the dollar store because all of the electronic ones are broken at my school. Couldn't be happier with it!

Mechanical pencils are much more expensive if you're looking for ones that can be refilled and won't break in 2 weeks. Considering how often I lose my writing utensils, I'll probably go through mechanical pencils quite quickly.

In 6th grade we had that hand crank one in the middle-left and it worked better than anything I've ever seen. The pencils always came out clean and sharp. Sharp to leave a faint scar on the back of my hand after I fucked around with another kid while he was holding a pencil.

They either break the lead over and over until you dont have a pencil or it does get pointy but its the fucking wood around the lead, not the lead itself.
Quite franky they are all shit except the little metal one at the top. I'd given up and just went with mechanical pencils after years of frustration.

The best pencil sharpeners are the ones that automatically stop when your pencil in done; itโs great bc you donโt have to go through the cycle where you leave it in for too long so the tip breaks, and you have to sharpen it again

So, one of the fishing ones actually works extremely well in my school. 1/2 a second and it's perfect. I assume it's like this because the part your supposed to put the pencil in has only around 6-7 inches to fit. It's so sharp though. 10/10

My American Lit teacher has this one I've never seen but actually works better than the top left one someone. It sharpens my pencil ridiculously fast and even sharper than the one up there. It even has a little blue light that goes off when it's done, and will stop sharpening. It's just amazing and I want one

Those metal hand crank ones are hit and miss. They're a nightmare to work with when the outside casing comes loose. However, there's also one in my math classroom that's the most powerful sharpener I've ever saw. It gave you super sharp, sturdy, elongated tips after only 3 quick turns.

Fun fact: pencil sharpeners like the one in the top right are often made of Magnesium. If you lighten that up it can burn up to 3000 ยฐC, that will keep on burning under water and even melt glass. (Do not try this at home)

I really wish they would have included scissors. Iโd sometimes just fucking medieval-style sharpen my pencil. Closest I felt like to being a knight. Open the scissors, scrape them against the pencil. Working around until the tip was even and sharp.

Forgot what its call, but I remember my teacher use to have a sharpener that is fully automatic. You just put the pencil in, it will lower the pencil and sharpen it, the raise it back up for you to pick up.

Anyone that thinks hand-crank sharpeners are shit is a fool that is uses to the ones in elementary that have been beat to oblivion by idiot kids that arenโt even sure to exclusively sharpen pencils in them.
I have hand-cranks that I use that work beautifully. I regulary sharpen my pencils to a perfect tip, a tip too perfect that I have on more than one occasion poked my finger drawing blood reaching into my pocket before a test.

Can confirm that the brown ones at the bottom were fucking AMAZING 25 years ago but would wear out eventually. Like years, but eventually.
Also, always empty the tray no matter how empty it is. You get the fresh sharpen and your friends have to use your sloppy seconds like the fucking plebs they are.
When the fuck did Exacto start making sharpeners? The bottom right was king when Exacto was just making little knives.

Hand crank ones are always better than electric ones. You can actually fix them and they lose sharpness less quickly.

I remember back in 2nd or 3rd grade our class got a really good expensive sharpener, where you put the pencil in a hole in the top, it goes down, sharpens for like 3 seconds and puts the pencil back up for you to grab. They got rid of it because people kept breaking their pencils just to use the sharpener.
