True. I'm 28 and felt like I was a teenager again when I witnessed the great meme war of October 2016. I was like Sweden, a silent, neutral party who only wanted the memes that were best for the world.
I think you mean Switzerland, referring to their role in World War II
aijeT ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 15:00:59 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
that would be the traditional analogy, but sweden stands by the same principle of neutrality that switzerland does (afaik), so it's not really wrong either way.
Edit: I looked it up and apparently I am wrong.

aijeT ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:59:28 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
many people have asked that question, and we're not really sure at this point.
but yes, sweden has an army. it's sometimes deployed for un peacekeeping missions and stuff, as is the swiss armed forces, but it's mostly supposed to be a deterrent to russia. i'm by no means an expert on this, but sweden does have a long history of neutrality, and was neutral during both world wars. this is codified in the swedish principle of non-alignment in matters of war, while we haven't really been that reluctant to more civil alliances, like the eu. that's where most of the differences in our respective flavors of neutrality lie. switzerland does get into those kinds of arrangements as well from time to time, schengen being one, but overall they're clearly pickier than sweden in matters of non-military non-alignment.
Why so hostile? Maybe I could have phrased what I said better, but Sweden had a large part to play in WWII because of their neutrality. In fact, one of the reasons for the UK to declare war was to defend the neutrality of Belgium

In my school rules thing at college they have it written down we can leave after 15 and not get penalized for it. Most teachers just copy that rule into the syllabus and tell us at the start of the semester. I'm all for learning, but I take that rule very seriously.
I get straight A*s, and I say this. Everyone in my school has said this at one point, and I go to a grammar school (academically gifted). Itโs literakky everyone.
Itโs complicated. Where I live, if you say can I get a โtinโ of something theyโre gonna look at you funny. In north US and Canada theyโll know what you mean though.

While few native speakers actually know it, there is a rigid order of adjectives in English. It goes: quantity or number, quality or opinion, size, age, shape, color, proper adjective (often nationality, other place of origin, or material), purpose or qualifier. And yes, I just got this off the web; I don't have it memorized. An example would be two lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knives. This is why it must be a tin cookie jar, not a cookie tin jar. I wouldn't worry about it, however, because no English speakers are worth talking to. (That last bit is sarcasm.)

Iโve tried to look this up and someone can correct me if Iโm wrong here, anyway it seems like itโs not an actual rule from my findings, (legally that is but it may vary by school) but if a teacher is 15 minutes late the students canโt leave but it becomes a safety concern where another teacher should come in for the class.
This was a article I found about the US, so I canโt speak for everyone who responded to my comments own countries.

This is an actual meme apparently. Like not an internet one but a real one that has somehow spread to, it sounds like, the collective subconscious of damn near the whole globe.
In the US army right now. Whenever we have a bullshit formation that no one wants to go to weโll joke that if our PLT SGT is 15 minutes late weโre legally allowed to go back to bed

In germany for us it was if the teacher is 15 minutes late someone has to go to the teachers room and ask for the teacher.
Apparently we dont like fun :(
At my school there were two types of people. The ones that would just say fuck it and leave after 15 minutes and the ones that were concerned they would get into trouble so they went to the teachers room to ask where the teacher is.
Itโs usually implemented at universityโs, I know from my colleges handbook (southeastern U.S.) that this is actually a thing
Jelni ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:45:38 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
My bet is that it is a deformed interpretation of the academic quarter which definition can change depending on the university you went to. In some European countries your schedule will say your lecture begins at 10.00 c.t., in that case it will effectively start at 10.15 while if it says 10.00 s.t. your lecture will start on the clock.
This is something that was in my schools in England and also my Estonian friends school too. I'm pretty sure this is literally world wide now
Brynjr27 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:47:55 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Also heard it here in Iceland. I remember one time when the teacher eventually came 20 min in and someone said that and the teacher said โno that is in no way a ruleโ but people started justifying it by saying it was like this in the school across town.
This rule actually happens at the university. In high school, people just joke about it but never leave because you have nowhere to go and you'll be truant.
I remember when they did the same shit in my school suddenly. We obviously found out how to get out and go to a shop. Initially I complained, but when I started earning "keep the change"s I figured it's not that bad

Some schools you cant do that because its an actual campus that isnt encompassed by anything next to it. My school for example you have to drive out of the parking lot and then go for a little to get anywhere
In America, or my college at least you just get 10 minutes. The class starts a 10 on the dot and ends at 10:50.

applies in undergrad, applies in grad, and applies with a 10 minute time limit for business meetings. also if you're 10 minutes late for your own meeting without sending some sort of update people will legit worry about you because its unprofessional enough that it doesnt really happen unless you're in some form of mortal peril (ie another meeting ran over)
Happened in summer school where people were getting credits out of the way. Some kids heard about this โlawโ and were about to dip. I kinda instigated. Then the teacher runs in looking exhausted and goes on to say her nephew was in an almost fatal car wreck and then broke down crying.
I mean, you thought she was a no-show. Definitely not your fault, nor should you feel bad.

I had an hour and a half lecture in college once. Teacher was hella Asian, could not speak a lick of English. One day she pulls out her phone 10 minutes into a lecture to answer a call and starts yelling into the phone in mandarin for 5 minutes. She put it back, went back to writing on the board. Her phone went off ten minutes later again, and she answered it yelling again. Only that this time it lasted about an hour. She hung up ten minutes before the class ended and got back to teaching without saying a word.
Edit: another story about her. I went to a fairly large college, and this ladyโs office was across campus from our class. She walked with a cane. One day I left another profโs office an hour before her class started and saw her walking. I walked to the middle of campus to chill, then 30 minutes later she caught up to were I was hanging out, which was roughly the mid point between the class and office. It then hit me that at the pace it took her to get there, sheโd make it to class at roughly the time it started. This lady did this hour long trek every Tuesday and Thursday. I would have felt bad, but she was an awful teacher who didnโt care about any of us so I didnโt.

An academic quarter (German: Akademisches Viertel, Swedish: akademisk kvart (ak or aq), Icelandic: akademรญskt korter) is the quarter-hour (15 minute) discrepancy between the defined start time for a lecture or lesson ("per schema") and the actual starting time, at some universities in Austria, Switzerland, Estonia, Finland, Romania, Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, Serbia, Italy, Israel, Hungary, Greece, and the UK.
The quarter system dates back to the days when the ringing of the church bell was the general method of time keeping. When the bell rang on the hour, students had 15 minutes to get to the lecture. Thus a lecture with a defined start time of 10:00 would start at 10:15.
Academic quarter exists to a varying extent in many universities, especially where the campus is spread out over a larger area, necessitating the need for fifteen minutes for the students to walk from one building to another between classes.
This is really bad history. They didn't have pens in the 1500s.

Missing class isnโt worth it in college. Literally and educationally
Haha I was definitely that student in undergrad. It seemed so pointless for exactly that reason.
Now I regret it. Most of the things i did while ditching class were also pointless (e.g., sleeping, smoking, hanging out with people who are no longer my friends). I miss the in-class discussions, bonding with a few people I wouldnโt have known otherwise, interacting with teachers (the ones that gave a shit). Those gen ed teachers are usually just as bored as you. Itโs fun to banter with them a bit, get them way off topic and watch them and their passion for the subject really come alive. That may just be me though.
Plus paying back student loans is a bitch. A big portion of my paycheck goes to pay off classes that I didnโt even attend. Feels pretty shitty.
Just my two cents. Sorry for the rant!
Ezny ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 09:28:02 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Meh. I'm getting a degree and networking, the gen eds are just something I have to deal with. In 2 years post grad (assuming I get a return offer to my current internship) I will have earned more than my degree costs. It's worth it even if I skipped a couple art history classes.

No idea, but it's a thing in Norway as well. Just like the "Marilyn Manson removed his ribs" rumour, some things just spread everywhere.
... from the lecture which you paid for and may still happen to an extent. Oh and you've got nowhere better to be, and you're just chilling in a room with your friends.
Looking back, I have no idea why I always bailed in that situation. Oh wait yeah I do, to go smoke weed...
It has never been true for high school. If a college professor is late enough, they cannot mark you not being there against you. At some point, high schoolers decided it applies to them too.
Do you just leave school for the rest of the day? Where do you go?

At my high school people had open periods and just stayed in lunch area or in study areas for an hour hanging out with friends mostly. Even if they didnโt have open and were skipping for whatever reason they would wonder around in the school. Never heard of a teacher questioning or scolding anyone about what or where they were going. Maybe it might be because differences in size of the school?
Definitely true, itโs called a duty of care. If a school allowed students to just go home because their teacher is late or absent and something weโre to happen the education depart and achoo would be in some serious trouble. Iโm a teacher and we are pretty good at getting substitutes to cover absent teachers and, if a teacher in unexpectedly late a colleague next door will look after them for a short time.

My one teacher always said "I get to be 2 minutes late for every year I've worked here". i.e. she's worked there a long time and it was her fun/sassy way of saying "Ill be as late as i damn please and you better be there". She was head of her department and helped with administration a bit so it wasnt unusal for her to be late. thus she used this excuse
This rule has spread world-wide. I live in Norway and we used to say this in elementary.
gameboy17 ยท -14 points ยท Posted at 07:27:44 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
It's actually a myth for college students as well. Somehow, every time the professor is late, someone brings up the "15-minute rule" and someone has to explain that it's a myth.
Of course, most professors don't take attendance anyway, but they'd certainly be annoyed if they showed up a bit late and were met with an empty classroom.
Edit: Maybe it's a rule at your college, but it certainly isn't at mine.
Not a myth. I went to Texas A&M for engineering and this was an actual thing. I even had a professor that would show up right before the 15 min mark and laugh at us because we were so close to being excused.Turns out he would use those extra minutes to get caught up with his work. His office was about a minutes walk from the classroom. He eventually got in trouble because a student told the dean lol.

Toad152 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:55:50 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This was a rule at both colleges I went to. We were allowed to leave if the professor didn't show up for the first 15 - 20 minutes. It was in our student handbook. Depending on the class you'd have people sitting there with stopwatches
Unless the class was required for your major and you had a small department like me. Then our prof would call one of us on our cells, make us put her on speakerphone, and she'd list what projects she wanted us to start on. If we didn't come to class then someone would reach out to ask what's up (if you miss 3 then it's an automatic fail). If you left before she got there, even if it's within your legal right, it was basically ill advised. She'd call you or something unless you had a legitimate excuse to go (emergency or something). Otherwise you'd be called out by the faculty for being lazy at the end of the year in front of the whole department and your peers (which I've seen happen to people who would spring up and bee line for the door the second she'd call our lunch breaks. She did NOT appreciate that)
ancine ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:30:42 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
It is a rule in bulgarian schools at least. We won't be punished if we leave after 15 min but that happens very rarely. 15 min is pretty much the point of where the teacher wouldn't come in anyway and even if they did they only have like 20 min to teach us.
My robotics teacher legit left during lunch because he supposedly got sick so we were standing around outside waiting for 15 minutes but some kids went to the office and they called in some sub within like 2 minutes. The sub didn't know jack shit and told us to do our reflection questions without using our laptops or robots to do experiments, so everyone didn't do anything.
When I was in high school, my auto body teacher didnโt show up to class one day and we basically we waited 20 minutes for the vp to tell us we were going to need to wait for a sub. Turns out, the sub was also incredibly late and we ended up waiting inside the classroom for another 40 minutes for them to show up. Basically half a class period of just waiting for someone to show up.
In my school we have some block classes, which take up 3 periods instead of the normal 1. It's mostly mechanical stuff, auto body included. This is probably one of those, but only 2 periods.
When I was a freshmen in high-school our speech and debate teacher called out sick once and the substitute teacher called out sick too at the last minute. The administration couldn't get another sub on such short notice, so they let my class have a free period for that day. Since most of the kids in my class were seniors and juniors, we all went to Starbucks until the next period
When I was in high school we were supposed to have this Test in ENGLISH. The teacher never showed up and neither did a sub, so we just quietly sat there and hoped no one noticed.
No one ever came so we thought we pulled one over on the administration. Boy howdy, did fire reign down from on high once they figured out what happened.
At university there was this one lecturer who was a ignorant fuck. You ask a question, heโs give a sarcastic answer that made you feel stupid, so we all stopped asking questions.
Heโd mark us hard too, so we had to over-work to protect our coursework etc, no silly mistakes he could pick up on. I organised a group session before hand-in where weโd all cross-check to filter out stuff heโd pick up on.
If you handed in 20 minutes late you got zero. He gave no hand-in extensions in the three years, even when I was going through tough times.
As I was finishing the final year, I get a call from Rover/BMW car co, that they had a position to offer me. Weird.
It turned out that theyโd approached him asking for someone for a unique new research position, and heโd recommended me. He told them I was the only student that made every single lecture, and that Iโd not missed a coursework despite getting divorced, had positively influenced everyone around me, and that he considered me the best student heโd ever had.

I was looking for someone to say this... never had a high school teacher show up late. Now I am one, and โshowing up lateโ to your classes is just not a thing. You would be fired.
We never said that about teachers, but we definitely said it about the bus. If the bus is 15 minutes late, you don't have to go to school, and you won't get in trouble.
I once had a teacher so great we all waited 17 minutes for him to show up. He opened with "technically you're allowed to leave and I cannot ask you to stay."
if the teacher has already missed a 3rd of the class you've got a point

The teacher is 15 minutes late? I am surprised there were no fatalities. No students setting each other on fire or choking to death on their smartphones, that sort of thing.
Me teaching a class of college freshmen. I'm usually between 0-5 minutes late every day.
Student who sucks: You're lucky!
Me: Oh yeah, why's that?
Student who sucks: I it's almost 15 after. I was just about to leave.
Me: You don't have to wait 15 minutes, that's not a real rule. You can leave any time you want. You don't even have to show up at all, if you don't want to.

Yeah dont do this. The professor will still do their lecture and you will be behind a day on notes which in college is about 3 weeks of high school notes.
Here in Poland it's pretty much an unwritten rule, but everyone honours it, even professors. So when they're late 15 minutes the lecture is marked as it has not occured. It is not very common but it's understandable.
Had this happen to me two days in a row in high school. Was a mixup with the subs, and after 15 minutes everyone just went home/to timmies until next class.
At least for my secondary school in France, it was actually written down in the school rule-book that after 15 minutes, students should go to the office and ask if the teacher is coming, if the response is no, then they can leave.
DeGrav ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:15:38 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This was actually our college written policy. The teach would arrive at 9.17 and the room would be emptying and they didn't even try and stop us. In fact if they did try to teach a class after that point they would be reported by the students for skipping entire classes and not making up for the topics not taught. Even if only one person left at the 15 minute mark.
It might seem like a dick move to repott them for running the clss anyway even after people left but it came in after lecturers started locking classes after 15 mins but weren't required to be held accountable themselves, even one group of students locked themselves in and the lecturer out in protest once. I actually missed most of a class in first year because the lecturer regularly showed up to class 45 min late to a 2 hour class and try and teach the 3 people who stuck about all that time. They lost their job the students kicked off about being locked out and missing classes over lecturers that were late and the admin had to change policy and comp a load of peoples classes and repeats.

My teacher never showed up yesterday so we were just sitting in the room for an hour
yusyxD ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:57:11 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
One time our teacher did not come for 5 minutes and in this 5 minutes the whole class decided to just leave like idiots (except for me and 2 more). the teacher came after 5 minutes asked what happened and then we were allowed to leave because she couldn't make a class out of 3 guys. The whole class got yelled at after that the next day. Yeah i hated everyone there so it was funny to watch their faces. The hate me because i did not leave with them. BUT FUCK THEM
One time in middle school our teacher was out sick and the sub never showed. So we sat in the classroom for 20 minutes goofing off until two students went and got the principal. We all hated them that day. Those same students are the ones who remind the teacher we had homework
Back when I was a teenager this was every damned fucking day. "The bus is 5 minutes late, if it doesn't get here in 5 more minutes we don't have to go to school."
Wtf? Oh ok. So the school just won't count that as an absence? You just won't have to make up schoolwork? IF cops see you fucking around they won't be like "you need to be in school?" smh
In college it was an unwritten campus rule that class was canceled if the teacher did not show up. Times were as follows. After 5 minutes if class was taught by TA, 10 minutes if by professor, and 15 minutes if by Dr.

bwwatr ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:03:56 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This is apparently universal. When I was in high school, it was 5 minutes. We would gather outside the classroom - but - once we started suspecting a no-show, we'd try to dissipate down the hallway a bit, to avoid arousing the suspicions of other staff that anything might be amiss, lest they summon a substitute before the magical 5 minute mark hit. Hilarious.
Lol, on our room today it said class cancelled go to the library
XZigZX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:35:18 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
I did not have a single class where this wasn't everyone's rule. That's only going back 12 years. It is probably a longer tradition. If a principal/vice came in and said what was up with the teacher that was different, they made an effort to check in with the school. No explanation as to why I am here doing nothing and you are not, no reason for me to be here I guess.
I managed to convince my class that this was true in seventh grade. Now every time a teacher is late, they're like, just wait fifteen minutes and we can leave. I go to a private school
This happened once and all my classmates were walking away really quickly and we were walking down the hall and ran into the teacher. So we went to class :/ we were so fucking excited and then our dreams were ruined.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:30:35 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This trimesters had two teachers that one would show up 5-10 minutes later everyday (first hour) and our other one sometimes didnโt show up until 5 minutes left of class (last hour).
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:53:11 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Holy shit I thought this saying was only at my school lol
This is in the law book every child reads in their early-mid teens. There are only two chapters; this one and the second one being the complete law library concerning "false advertisement".
Back in my day (I'm 33) it was five minutes. But in reality we never left cuz what would we do anyway. Call our parents to come pick us up? Be seen leaving school grounds? Nah we just waited.
earlier this year, we were waiting for the teacher for like 20+ minutes. Turns out the dumb slut didn't get a substitute for us. Also every says that rule but no one left.
Funny in my school 15 minutes passed, a nextdoor teacher confirmed our right to leave, and 2/30 people left. Guess we just value education? Also our school makes make up work a bitch so people never try to skip school, even when sick etc
My teacher didnt show up for a lesson so we left... the next day the fucker showed up and started complaining about her forgetting the lesson and US not going to get her from the teachers room or whatever. Like bitch please, if you forget to do your fucking job.. not my problem
I know kids who actually fucking believe this. I keep telling them that we can't, and they're like "weeeell we can't leave schoooool, but we can go wander the hallways..."
yeah, about 150 friends on steam that I've never met face to face
BindeDSA ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 08:37:51 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

True. I'm 28 and felt like I was a teenager again when I witnessed the great meme war of October 2016. I was like Sweden, a silent, neutral party who only wanted the memes that were best for the world.
LostInSpace9 ยท 46 points ยท Posted at 13:26:53 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Manipura-Dragon ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 15:17:07 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Except doesn't Sweden have an army?
Edit: I looked it up and apparently I am wrong. They are around 57k strong ... Not counting PewDiePie's 57million of course.
aijeT ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:59:28 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
many people have asked that question, and we're not really sure at this point.
but yes, sweden has an army. it's sometimes deployed for un peacekeeping missions and stuff, as is the swiss armed forces, but it's mostly supposed to be a deterrent to russia. i'm by no means an expert on this, but sweden does have a long history of neutrality, and was neutral during both world wars. this is codified in the swedish principle of non-alignment in matters of war, while we haven't really been that reluctant to more civil alliances, like the eu. that's where most of the differences in our respective flavors of neutrality lie. switzerland does get into those kinds of arrangements as well from time to time, schengen being one, but overall they're clearly pickier than sweden in matters of non-military non-alignment.

Why so hostile? Maybe I could have phrased what I said better, but Sweden had a large part to play in WWII because of their neutrality. In fact, one of the reasons for the UK to declare war was to defend the neutrality of Belgium

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:26:51 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

My bet is that it is a deformed interpretation of the academic quarter which definition can change depending on the university you went to. In some European countries your schedule will say your lecture begins at 10.00 c.t., in that case it will effectively start at 10.15 while if it says 10.00 s.t. your lecture will start on the clock.

by not allowing students to leave high schools, it limits the chance of a school shooter. Try and walk up to any high school during a school day. Good luck getting close without someone stopping you.

Some schools you cant do that because its an actual campus that isnt encompassed by anything next to it. My school for example you have to drive out of the parking lot and then go for a little to get anywhere

applies in undergrad, applies in grad, and applies with a 10 minute time limit for business meetings. also if you're 10 minutes late for your own meeting without sending some sort of update people will legit worry about you because its unprofessional enough that it doesnt really happen unless you're in some form of mortal peril (ie another meeting ran over)

Might have been a blessing in disguise, I don't think teaching pupils who are likely to leave the classroom would have been a good distraction. Having the interested and calmer kids there only sounds good.

I see how teaching the kids is important and being a role model and not calling in sick when you don't need to is part of that, but in situations like this one... s/he probably couldn't concentrate on teaching anyway

Orisi ยท 50 points ยท Posted at 09:55:13 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
I mean, if you had a two hour round trip for one class with a bunch of college kids who probably aren't listening anyway, you'd probably phone it in too.

Academic quarter (class timing)

It has never been true for high school. If a college professor is late enough, they cannot mark you not being there against you. At some point, high schoolers decided it applies to them too.

DasShadow ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 08:56:15 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Definitely true, itโs called a duty of care. If a school allowed students to just go home because their teacher is late or absent and something weโre to happen the education depart and achoo would be in some serious trouble. Iโm a teacher and we are pretty good at getting substitutes to cover absent teachers and, if a teacher in unexpectedly late a colleague next door will look after them for a short time.

My one teacher always said "I get to be 2 minutes late for every year I've worked here". i.e. she's worked there a long time and it was her fun/sassy way of saying "Ill be as late as i damn please and you better be there". She was head of her department and helped with administration a bit so it wasnt unusal for her to be late. thus she used this excuse
soda_party_euw ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:44:47 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

He eventually got in trouble because a student told the dean lol.

whiskey-monk ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:16:00 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

BUT FUCK THEM
DanielSophoran ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:02:06 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
There was a rule at my old school where if the teacher was 5 minutes late, you could just leave while 1 guy goes to the administration to report it.

One time in middle school our teacher was out sick and the sub never showed. So we sat in the classroom for 20 minutes goofing off until two students went and got the principal. We all hated them that day. Those same students are the ones who remind the teacher we had homework
ShawshankException ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:24:13 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Had this happen once, professor showed up 20 minutes late. Everyone got zeroes for attendance because it's not actually a written rule at my school.
Urtehnoes ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:28:54 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
Back when I was a teenager this was every damned fucking day. "The bus is 5 minutes late, if it doesn't get here in 5 more minutes we don't have to go to school."
Wtf? Oh ok. So the school just won't count that as an absence? You just won't have to make up schoolwork? IF cops see you fucking around they won't be like "you need to be in school?" smh
Lucky_Pyro ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:31:14 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
In college it was an unwritten campus rule that class was canceled if the teacher did not show up. Times were as follows. After 5 minutes if class was taught by TA, 10 minutes if by professor, and 15 minutes if by Dr.

15 minutes? We always used the 5 minute rule.
bwwatr ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:03:56 on December 1, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
This is apparently universal. When I was in high school, it was 5 minutes. We would gather outside the classroom - but - once we started suspecting a no-show, we'd try to dissipate down the hallway a bit, to avoid arousing the suspicions of other staff that anything might be amiss, lest they summon a substitute before the magical 5 minute mark hit. Hilarious.
