The best part is they axed a Popeye The Sailorman movie that was going to be done by Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexters Lab, Samurai Jack, Hotel Transylvania, Sym-Bionic Titan) for this trash fire.
I can believe it. I can name maybe 2 good movies that have came from Sony in the past 10 years. Amy Pascal is a complete shithead and absolutely shouldn't be running a company like this, her primary concern is profit. On top of that Sony's animation department lead Kristine Belson's been fairly underwhelming too, case and point this movie being shat out.
...Which the company would get if it wasn't also compromising the vision of the directors working for them. A director's first thought isn't to blow through a big budget and reduce as much profit as possible, they obviously want to make something good and enjoyable that makes them richer and helps the production company make more films. Good films tend to be profitable films too when they're marketed properly, Baby Driver being a good Sony example because it was given a fair budget and appropriate marketing, and is now making bank. What Sony's film department lacks is faith in developers and what it unfortunately suffers from is being blinded by greed. Of course not all of Sony's like this, Playstation actually knows what the fuck it's doing most of the time and has faith in its creative's, but Sony's film department clearly doesn't if they have to make an Emoji movie, or hold the Spiderman villains hostage from Marvel.
Oh you know it will, don't deny it. The memes just gave it free marketing which in turn made even more people see it. That movie made a fuck ton simply because of memes.
Obviously some 70 year old executive thought that the youth of the world absolutely loves emojis and considered it would be "hip" with the kids to make a movie about such "iconic" images you ironically (usually) use.

And Japanese life insurance. They make most of their money from that surprisingly
When I first read this yesterday I thought you meant a company as big as Sony made the movie without specifying who actually made it. Today I realized while I was showering that you meant Sony, and you simply stated that Sony shouldn't be making shitty movies because they have a reputation to uphold.
[deleted] · 41 points · Posted at 09:02:57 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
You gotta subtract all that sweet sweet corporate money for putting ads in the movie
Oh, I understand now. I've just thought of something related to this. If Sony got enough money from the ads, they could technically be making a profit before it was even finished.
It takes money away from the cost. If it cost 50 million dollars to make, but there were 20 million dollars in ad revenue, you need to subtract 20 million from 50 million, for a cost of 30 million.
$50 million dollars is cheap for a 3D CGI movie. Pixar movies cost anywhere from $150 to $200 million. The Emoji Movie is on track to make ~$27.5 million this weekend.
They got paid 20 mill to put candy crush in it, 20 mill to put Wechat app, plus got paid for other apps like dropbox (don't know prices for other apps). Apparently the movie didn't need to make a dime and was already profitable.
Also, Angry Birds tried that. It was a disaster, and they are getting out of the animation game after Angry Birds 2. From now on, they will only license the property to other studios.
How did you come up with that number? Sure if you wanna go full A-list actors you might hit that number. But the animation in itself is not that expensive. Sausage Party had a $19M budget.
[deleted] · 8 points · Posted at 15:40:34 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
That's not much. it's tracking for about $25 mil domestic opening weekend, and it'll most likely make profit worldwide.
No, bankrupt Sony Pictures, which still probably won't happen, but if their shitty movies keep failing, the main Sony company will realize its not worth it to stay in the movie business and they'll shut down Sony Pictures.
Sony as a whole no, the film devision is a possibility. It's been flop after flop
kiey · 28 points · Posted at 10:19:29 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
Bad movies won't bankrupt a company since each movie made by a big company is an llc. Therefore if the movie tanks the 'investors' assets are safe from the debt that will follow.
That movie was stunning to me, it was very well directed, and had some amazing visuals, highly recommend, just don't bring your friend who thinks they are a comedian, it's a movie worth watching in silence.

It's not good. I saw it yesterday after a (poor) recommendation based off initial reviews. I legit thought it was a kids movie at first. The dialogue is horse shit. The plot is the most predictable I've seen in awhile. Which for a space station made of "a thousand planets" or whatever is almost impressive. Literally anything could happen, but you knew every single 'turn'. The visuals were great. I'll give it that.

The visuals are actually what turned me off when I watched the trailer. I don't mind when movies use a lot of CGI but I don't want to be taken out of the movie by how unconvincing it is.
Yeah but people are also saying the acting and dialogue wasn't great. I didn't think it was bad at all, obviously not something out of a Scorsese movie but it was decent
Jupiter Ascending shows everything wrong with current trends in fantasy/sci-fi movies, and Valerian shows everything wrong with us:we don't know a good movie when we see it

Are you sure about that? I see a stupid debate about a stupid film like its the ending of the world. That's straight up /r/politics bullshit and you know it.
Hollywood is broken, extremely broken in a really sad way. Studios are no longer willing to risk millions on something that won't work so they don't take risks, they put out shit they know will make money. Emoji movie, iron man 4 (I like the MCU, just using it as an example), the entire DCCU, every crappy kids movie, saw 7, who's your daddy 2, ghost busters 3, the list goes on an on. Movies that are catorgized as a risk will no longer get funding from big studies, if they do they could be under funded. The current climate in Hollywood is very scary to people who consider film to be of high value to society, and their personal life. Who knows, if Hollywood was like this for the last 50 years we may not have ever seen a ghostbusters, good fellas, a godfather, a Forrest Gump, a pulp fiction (in the current climate nobody may have ever taken a risk on tarentino, he never makes his masterpiece, he never gets funding for the rest of his movies) or a Jurassic park. All these IPs, even if they led to sequels, were original at the time and Hollywood is getting less and less original by the year.
The reason this happens is because safe sequels make money, people go see them, they make their money back every time. The emoji movie may not be a sequel but it is safe and a product of the system where people will happily go pay to watch crap but no one wants to go see Swiss army man, or the lobster, or lion, or Manchester by the sea.
If you go pay to see the emoji movie, you are showing Sony that this system is ok, it works, it reaffirms to them that they should continue making movies like that. People prefer to go see the blockbusters in the theater, they prefer to see the "good movies" after they are nominated for an oscar and are put on netflix. This practice is the downfall of great cinema as we know it.
Just look back to the 90s, every year had a few well funded blockbusters with major stars that were incredibly well made (goodfellas, pulp fiction, Forrest Gump). Now we are lucky to get one film that fits all those categories every year. We tend to get the underfunded great movies (lion, Manchester by the sea, moonlight), and the safe, well funded, but average oscar baity films (la la land, scully, fences).
I absolutely agree and having a female led super hero movie was indeed a risk.
[deleted] · -2 points · Posted at 17:07:28 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
You are indeed young and nuance to think showbusiness has been anything other than a business.
Hollywood production has always been about creating profitable entertainment over art.
Acting like this is new shows how little of Hollywoods 100+ year history you are ignorant of.
If non-franchise content becomes more profitable at a low risk compared to franchise content the movies coming out will change. This is how it has always been.
But instead you're angrily writing treaties on the history of film while ignoring how small a thing the Emoji movie really is.
It's a forgettable property yet you are here acting like this one film is what's wrong with everything in California and we can save it all by shitting on it in Reddit comments.
For one, emoji movie is probably the worst of all time to come out when you weigh cost of production with how terrible the idea, screenplay, and script probably is.
Two, I'm not saying that Hollywood isnt a business, but if the marketplace rewarded originality instead of crap, than that's what they would be making, but we don't. When I say don't give money to Sony/Emoji movie, I'm also saying, don't give money to ghostbusters 3, any terrible terrible Will Farrel comedy that comes down the line, and instead of waiting until Manchester by the sea comes out on Netflix, just go watch it in the theaters. If even a few percentage of people changed their behavior, Hollywood would be forced to take notice.

Emoji is just another in a long line of blunders. You'll be fine in the morning.
The google movie was dumb but no where near as idiotic as making a movie about emojis
Emojis are meme, google is a company that actually does some pretty cool stuff internally that people may find intersecting even if it is dramatized.

I haven't seen it so I can't judge the top 10, but the character that helps the "meh" dude escape is called "jailbreak" and I personally feel like it promotes tech illiteracy by saying you get root access via emojis.
wait I have a question. I've read some reviews that say the movie is depressing and offers really questionable moral lessons. Can you attest to any of this?

You can "jailbreak" your phone which gives you a bunch of features that aren't on already on your phone. Oh and a bunch of pirating stuff, but most people do it to change how their phone looks.
Not unless you brick your phone which is close to impossible on an iPhone. You can always do a clean restore and your iPhone will be back in its factory state.

Lol no. Most people do it to steal stuff. Myself included.
I would actually argue that no, most people truly do it to change the appearance or get apps with more control over the phone rather than to steal stuff.

I've never met someone with a jailbroken phone that doesn't have some kind of stolen content. Maybe they do it initially to change the looks, but almost everyone ends up getting free shit.
I've never met someone who pirates apps, back when I started jailbreaking like 6 years ago I used to pirate tweaks because I didn't have a credit card but that's over now. I think it's mainly younger people who pirate that kind of thing.

Please for the love of Christ do not watch this movie. Not even for irony. Big company execs see numbers, but humans see art. The quality of animation films are dying because of movies like this.
But hilariously bad movies need soul. It's why The Room is a masterpiece. Because it's god fucking awful but someone TRIED. It makes it seem genuinely bad and not forced
Yes, a bad movie can still be enjoyed if the creators were clearly passionate about the project. A corporate movie that's purely motivated by money doesn't have a soul and is usually unenjoyable.

That's why I don't understand why so many idiots on this site have upvoted that "review" to the top of r/videos. I don't know if that youtuber is secretly in on the whole situation or if he just has an extra chromosome or something, but they gave him tickets to the premiere because of all the exposure he's generating for the film. It's like this weird new type of marketing that's popped up where companies are creating advertising campaigns which aim to target people without them even realising.
Then millions of people go to watch this garbage "ironically" and the studio gets the last laugh when they make bank.
I don't know whether you have watched jacksfilms but he has always been very clear of his sponsors. If you have watched the videos he have made of the emoji movies you'd have realised that it is completely over the top, while along the way he also drops various snide remarks attacking the movie. He is a very ironic person and this is definitely one of his stunts rather than a marketing move. Whatever Sony thought of it was just idiocy on their part.

The guy who made it has said it's leftist progressive propaganda to sway kids to one side. Most Hollywood stuff is slanted anyway I can't imagine what something that is open about its goals could be like.
He openly says it is. “This was an opportunity to do something optimistic, positivistic and you know, we have very few weapons in the current administration, and one of them is to target a younger demographic and try and help them understand and adopt progressive values,”
I loved the movie. It was honestly one of the worst I have ever seen, comparable to The Room. I want a sequel. I need to experience something so fantastic once again.
This is apparent the new world... let's just do shit for the "memeability"..
Soon they will spend more on the memes than on the movie... "Well, I have to see this move, look at the memes!"

On top of that Sony's animation department lead Kristine Belson's been fairly underwhelming too, case and point this movie being shat out.
chregranarom · 27 points · Posted at 16:29:21 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
Wow it's almost like the purpose of the company is to make money.
Arty6060 · 16 points · Posted at 16:38:51 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
...Which the company would get if it wasn't also compromising the vision of the directors working for them. Of course not all of Sony's like this, Playstation actually knows what the fuck it's doing most of the time and has faith in its creative's, but Sony's film department clearly doesn't if they have to make an Emoji movie, or hold the Spiderman villains hostage from Marvel.
chregranarom · 1 points · Posted at 16:45:00 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)

not-quite-a-nerd · 7 points · Posted at 11:22:57 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
That wouldn't take money away, Sony would have been paid to put the ads in, that's how ads work
TylerZellers · 36 points · Posted at 11:36:25 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
He means you can subtract it from the money Sony spent.
not-quite-a-nerd · 10 points · Posted at 12:31:33 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
Oh, I understand now. I've just thought of something related to this. If Sony got enough money from the ads, they could technically be making a profit before it was even finished.
Bugbread · 0 points · Posted at 12:35:03 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)

DionysusMA · 10 points · Posted at 15:56:21 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)

150 million for an animated film (including marketing)
DionysusMA · 1 points · Posted at 23:10:50 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
How did you come up with that number? Sure if you wanna go full A-list actors you might hit that number. But the animation in itself is not that expensive. Sausage Party had a $19M budget.
[deleted] · 8 points · Posted at 15:40:34 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
That's not much. it's tracking for about $25 mil domestic opening weekend, and it'll most likely make profit worldwide.
theonlydidymus · 15 points · Posted at 15:39:17 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)

$50 million is ridiculously cheap for an animated movie. The norm is 80+ and for a Disney or Pixar production 150 to 200 million.

Bad movies won't bankrupt a company since each movie made by a big company is an llc. Therefore if the movie tanks the 'investors' assets are safe from the debt that will follow.

Rip Hollywood

Please. This is exactly like Politics.
natesplace19010 · 3 points · Posted at 18:18:19 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)

Then millions of people go to watch this garbage "ironically" and the studio gets the last laugh when they make bank.
suchshibeinu · 84 points · Posted at 11:02:04 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)
I don't know whether you have watched jacksfilms but he has always been very clear of his sponsors. If you have watched the videos he have made of the emoji movies you'd have realised that it is completely over the top, while along the way he also drops various snide remarks attacking the movie. He is a very ironic person and this is definitely one of his stunts rather than a marketing move. Whatever Sony thought of it was just idiocy on their part.
penismuncha · 25 points · Posted at 11:55:59 on July 29, 2017 · (Permalink)

And I think it's genuinely quite a funny video, I'm totally fine with Sony and Jack actually making a profit from this.
