Carly had a normal room, but her brother spencer accidentally lit it on fire, so he got a lot of money from insurance which he used to turn it into a crazy smart home tween girl's wet dream room.
Yeah.... if you tore out the walls and floors and put in a cockload of insulation (but not before going to town with a few cans of Great Stuff to seal cracks) and replaced all of the glass with double-pane, vacuum sealed shit with a reflective coating to block out most of the sun, and used about 150%-200% more AC than you needed BTU-wise, then it might be comfortable in the summer.
Short of a $10k remodel (if you did the work yourself), Arnold's pretty screwed.
I just looked it up, and apparently the creator says that it's a mix of Seattle, Portland, and Brooklyn. It's weird because with the sorta brownstoney style of the buildings, I keep thinking New York too, but I definitely remember some very PNW names being thrown around in the show.
The density, building style and that the schools are named just by number always made me think NYC, so I was surprised when I read a few years ago that Seattle was an influence.
Even in Seattle, the built-up heat from an 100% glazed roof would be unbearable by 3pm. Your heater probably wouldn't be able to keep up in the winter, either.
Or Beverly Hills High School, which ends up looking pretty weird when your characters are supposed to be average middle-class kids. (Of course, television middle-class is pretty damn rich. I think I read somewhere that the house on Modern Family would cost a million dollars in the real world).
I mean...I didn't go to a rich school or anything, but we always had a small outdoor eating area as well as the normal indoor eating area. So that part isn't so ridiculous.
I'm scared to ask where. I went to a school in Western PA with an outdoor eating area that I heard got banned from student use for "undisclosed reasons" after I graduated.
I had a friend with a bed just like that growing up. As he grew older it kinda lost its novelty and just became obnoxious to climb up into every night he said.
Can confirm. Had bunk beds when I was little, was stoked the first week to have top bunk, got tired of climbing it a week in and started sleeping on the bottom.
I had bunk beds too growing up. I slept on the top for a few months but then something oddly specific stopped it. I watched this Scooby Doo special where it was a Batman crossover and they all went after the joker. One of the monsters the joker placed as a trap for the gang was like this weird tree stump thing with a face and arms and legs that jumps out from the woods to scare Scooby and Shaggy. For some reason that night I couldn't help but keep imagining that thing jumping up onto my top hunk and trying to scare me, so I decided to sleep on the bottom bunk and continued to do so for the rest of my childhood.
People found out about it, so I have a few cool stories. A friend gifted me a full set of '61 Corvette hubcaps. Another gave me the '59 Mack truck hubcap. My high school shop teacher had an old Dodge van, called The Beaver, that was missing a hubcap, so I traded him one that I found that I thought would fit. It looked the same, but didn't quite fit. Then we realized the outer ring was removable. We popped it off and it pressed right into the wheel. It fit like a glove! So I got a Lebaron hubcap that was laying around the shop.
yeah, like with half a car in the wall or some other stuff that would cost 10's of thousands.
And don't forget the school project budget. "we have a science project I don't know what to do...Oh lets spend like $50,000 on this" and they some how just barely win last minute, in spite of the smart know-it-all. Like what kind of message is that, an infinite budget trumps actual intelligence?
My cousin BEGGED to be sent to boarding school because she thought Zoey 101 was what it's like. Later her older brother got sent to boarding school and realized that it was not cool.

I dunno, i think people just get attached to certain shows. I personally don't think the suite life or that's so Raven were any better than the rest.
Disney live action tween sitcoms all have the same formula, and when i was younger they were all annoying, but after like 7-10 years they become nostalgic to everyone. Like now even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire are considered 'classics' but when i was little, i remember just being frustrated that they turned off the cartoons for those dumb families
I agree with suite life, that's so raven, even stevens etc, but lizzie mcguire was excellent! And so were the true classic disney 90s show (flash forward, ready or not, in a heartbeat, etc)
Draav · 14 points · Posted at 00:13:16 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
They all seem about the same level of hokey to me. They all have moments, but really it seems more about how young you were, if it was like the first one you watched, and how much you liked the characters. If you like lizzie oand gordo and whoever its great, not so much otherwise
Not personally. I started high school when lizzie mcguire started so I wasn't particularly young. But one thing that made that show stand out was that it was single camera and didn't have a laugh track I think? I thought Wizards was pretty funny too. There are a couple other kids shows I enjoyed even as an adult (like the Haunting Hour).
Since about 2014, I've noticed these shows have a 1 fedora minimum in the cast wardrobe. Usually complimented by a denim vest , skinny jeans and converses.
They look like little 12 year old douchbags
[deleted] · 12 points · Posted at 18:06:55 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
Disney doesn't use annoying parents as much. Now the thing is a single dad that's clueless and stupid which always leads to an emotional episode showing how the dad may seem goofy and happy on the outside but deep inside he is severely depressed and on the verge of a mental breakdown for being over his head taking care of his child(ren). Disney seems to have major daddy issues. Seems like every father in every generic Disney show is a simpleton.
No, Disney have something against mothers. They are either dead, not in the picture or in the form of evil step mom. This is even true for the old princess disney movies!
[deleted] · 141 points · Posted at 17:25:13 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
Shit, every Disney movie now is:
Girl has some kind of power
Parents don't want her to use or realize that power and attempt to suppress it
One of the parents usually dies at some point before the child hits adolescence
Parents are significant members of society and want daughter to fill a role she is destined for
Daughter does not want to fill that role and rebels
Daughter runs away and meets the future love interest even though she does not like him in the beginning
Daughter eventually learns how to harness her power and utilize it to save the day
Parents realize error of their ways and everyone lives happily ever after

As a dude, I didn't watch much of these shows when I was younger except for when my sister watched it. There was an askreddit post a while back along what the most dangerous jobs were, and the top answer was "anime protagonist's mom." It really does apply to all media though.
Just the mom? Really, in most anime the parents don't seem to exist. At least moms show up tangentially sometimes because of the japanese housewife trope. The fathers either don't exist or are constantly working.
"What's that? Dad has to cook and clean and do the laundry? Get ready for comedic hijinks galore!"
It's surprising how recently this stopped being an okay plot line. Three Men and a Baby was made in the late '80s and was basically premised on the idea that a man changing diapers and preparing bottles is inherently absurd.
The creator of One Piece says that he doesn't like writing mother's because mother's are the opposite of adventure. It opens up more writing opportunities
Well damn that's a shitty thing to say about mothers really. If you can't write in a mother character because she'll automatically ruin the fun then that just tells me you're a lazy writer or that you have a bad opinion of mothers
In fairness, the role of a mother is generally (archetypically in western fiction) that of Chief Caretaker. Fictional adventures generally involve risk and danger as conflict is encountered and overcome. So a good mother probably wouldn't let their child, for example, fight a dragon.
And a good father would? Yes historically women have been caretakers but if you as a modern writer can't think of any way to fit a mother in to a story without just making her the fun killer, you're a lazy writer.
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 19:41:14 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
TIL all writers are obligated to write strong motherly roles into their stories because all moms must be represented prominently regardless of:
the writer's intended audience
the influence the role has on plot development
the influence the role has on character development
the relevance the role has to the story
Come on, don't be ridiculous. If you don't like the stories that don't feature mothers write your fucking own that does.
Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying, that mothers need to be prominently featured in every story ever written. /s
Obviously, I'm not saying a mother character has to be relevant to every story, but if you never include mother characters because it's too hard to write them in and have the characters go on adventures, you've a shitty opinion on mothers or you're taking lazy shortcuts
[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 07:05:29 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Or the mother simply isn't relevant to the plot or intended audience for what you choose to write. Jackass.
Because all stories, on a very basic level, require some sort of conflict/adverse event to set things in motion. When the story is about a young child, that severely limits your options. Little kids do not have financial problems or workplace drama or romantic relationships. Their friendships are usually not all that complex. They're too young to have made any really serious mistakes that require a personal reckoning.
So what does that leave? Death of a parent. And because, for various reasons, mothers tend to play a much bigger role in the life of very young children (starting with the part where they get squeezed out of their uterus), losing a mother is going to be viewed as a much more disruptive event.
You also often have a subplot where the father ultimately falls in love with someone who their kid strongly approves of and marries her. (For much of history, the notion of a widowed woman with young children going out on dates in search of a new husband would have been seen as controversial or indecent, whereas a man whose wife died could "court" a new one without anyone thinking he was a slut or dishonoring his late spouse.)
Yeah see that would be great if it was ever explained but most of these shows and movies don't, the mother is either said to have died years ago or she's not mentioned at all. And given how prominent this trope is now, maybe it's time writers admitted that they're being a little lazy and started examining how mothers can be involved in a story.
The Hunger Games did it just fine, even gave a complex relationship between the main character and the mother, didn't stop her going on adventures.

Honestly as an Indian guy it was cool to see representation on television (the was called Jessie I think) , until the character opened his mouth. It was almost appalling. I've never seen such caricature in my life.
And that Ravi kid from Jessie. That show was made of stereotypes. Ravi was the kid from India who was smart af. Emma was the dumb blonde chick. Even worse was the Zury was the black girl who acted "ghetto". Even worse was that the nanny, the main character, threw her a birthday party for her where she thought she was adopted from, Africa. She included African shit and turns out she born in like Detroit?

Man, Democrats really love baselessly shit talking anyone outside of their party or general echo chamber.
He said as he baselessly accused an anarcho-communist of being a democrat because I'm outside of your party/general echo chamber.
Also one look at your post history and you're posting in /r/libertarian and doing nothing but spewing bullshit right wing economic policies all over /r/news. Kinda strange of a "politically neutral person". Kinda petty for you to lie, tbh. Almost spiteful0
Go ahead and attack me on being an anarcho-communist, too. But like I told the other guy, I'll gladly debate you in economics because unlike a working class person who self-identifies as a libertarian, I actually know what I'm talking about. In addition to that, your offense at me calling libertarian economic policies 'regressive' shows you have no clue what you're talking about.
Also, I'm not a democrat or a liberal. I actively hate both. But for you to pretend the economic policies of libertarians are better is just fucking stupid. Want to know where modern libertarianism came from? Koch brothers in the 80s astroturfing the fuck out of the political landscape to make it look like this shit would help the working class. Your Austrian economics bullshit would get you laughed at by any economics professor in the country. But I'm sure you don't even know the term 'austrian economics', do you? Libertarianism is a fucking scam. Liberty for who? The rich to exploit? Jesus christ.
Edit: Oh god looking at your post history made me want to kill myself. Libertarians are some of the most deluded cunts on the planet.
He said as he baselessly accused an anarcho-communist of being a Democrat
......
Uh... You do realize that just makes you less credible/able to be taken seriously... Right?
Fucking anarcho communist. Attempting to lecture on economics. I'm saving this as a screenshot.
I'll have a drowning man give me swimming lessons next.
Communists are far worse than democrats when it comes to dealing with opposing views, as in they shoot or jail people who express them. I'll take the pettiness of dems over the pure malice of communists anyway.
Also the irony of being called a deluded cunt by a communist is pretty delicious.
What do my personal beliefs have to do with my education in economics? Your inability to differentiate between someone's beliefs and someone's conceit to reality really shows at what a low level your brain operates on.
You also seem to be conflating authoritatian leftist state capitalism (USSR, Mao's China, for example) with communism. When, if you've read anything about communism, you would understand why these things aren't communism. Furthermore, you're also conflating authoritarian leftism with anarcho/libertarian leftism. These are completely different things.
Do I believe some people should be killed? Absolutely. Do you believe some people should be killed? I'm sure you do. Get off your high horse.
You addressed exactly 0 of my points and did exactly what I said you'd do. Attack me for my personal beliefs. My personal beliefs of which are completely irrelevant to my education in a capitalist economic system.
So, quit crying and trying to attack me, and let's have a real debate here. I've already caught you lying about who you are, lying about your political leanings, and called you out on what tactic you were planning to use before you used it. You're not equipped for this conversation, and I'm enjoying every ignorant, deluded reply.
Modern libertarianism is a scam. I told you this. I told you how it is. Before coming at me with your low grade ad hominem attacks, I suggest you learn a little bit about your own ideology. You're a fucking fool and anyone with even the slightest bit of knowledge can see it.

My only problem with those shows is that for some reason it seemed like the set designers were terrified of light. Those shows always seemed quite dark to me, and sometimes I could barely see the scene.
I mean I prefer the shows I had whilst growing up but surely the fact that you're much older now judging the new shows means you aren't going to relate to it in the same way.

bmtri · 96 points · Posted at 15:00:11 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)*
Ant Farm: new set and location, dropped parent and principal, one or two regulars were dropped.
Liv & Maddie (beginning of season 4): moved location, dad was dropped, semi-regulars were made even more semi.
Lab Rats (beginning of season 4): moved location, adults (Davenport and Leo's mom dropped), some regulars made semi-regular.
Mighty Med (beginning of season 3): COMBINES with Lab Rats, drops almost all adults, changes location.
Jessie: dropped all but one regular adult after first season.
Jessie: spun off into Bunk'd, keeps only 3 regulars, no regular adult.
Suite Life of Zack and Cody: switched location to a cruise ship, looks like they dropped some adult(s)
Kickin It: I think they changed location and dropped at least one regular (honestly, I hated this show and don't want to look it back up)
OR the show gets cancelled after 2 or 3 seasons. The only exception I know of is "Good Luck Charlie".
I'm guessing production costs get higher every season, sets run down, want to make the show look "new", adult actors cost more than kids, or maybe actors actually leave on their own.
Adult actors are actually often less expensive to hire (once you control for how "famous"/"talented"/"in demand" they are) because there are strict limits on how long children can work, what they can do on set, they have to be provided with tutors, etc. That interferes with how long it takes to film an episode, which increases your costs for crew, premises, and everything else.
That's why high schoolers are usually played by people between 18 and their early 20s.
bmtri · 5 points · Posted at 19:56:06 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
Ooh - forgot about that. How about we do CW shows next, where all the adults leave or get killed off after the first season? Second season at most.
I'm honestly so confused about what happened to Lab Rats. I haven't seen any of their episodes in a while, but haven't they totally switched up the entire premise three times now? It was actually an okay show at first, then they switched the setting to an island or something, and then they made it a superhero show? It must get expensive to build new sets three times...

Is this still what The Disney Channel is like? I remember it being this way a decade ago when I was watching with my kids, but I feel like it should have changed by now.
A decade ago it was decent. Now its utter shit. Even my seven year old sister, who watched The Jungle Book 17 times in a row, thinks its boring and repetitive.
To be fair, there's the episode during the first season where the main protagonist gets a job and learns the value of a dollar before never working there for the rest of the show.
OH OH!! And the inevitable costume party/Halloween episode where EVERYONE is sporting a costume that cost, bare MINIMUM, $300, and likely quite a bit more.

I have noticed that there is always ONE "good" show, or at least has actual work put into it, while the rest are "filler" shows (meaning a heaping pile of trash)
Most of those show were pretty bland and shallow, but I don't think it was anything that insidious. I watched them growing up, a lot of people did, and most if not all of us are fine.

Aight fair enough, I did not really consider that. I didn't have what they had either, but the discrepancy and effect may be more significant for other people.

Point lol. Yeah lets have 5 kids, well just stuff the 5th in the closet!
Honestly, I loved that show - both as a kid and today - because they all seemed like normal people. Yeah, it had the whole "silly" Disney feeling to it and some of the characters were pretty stereotypical. But still, there were no crazy premises or outlandish, borderline-insane characters. It was just a mostly normal family dealing with funny situations, you know?

Really? Did you not Lizzie McGuire or That's So Raven? Or Wizards of Waverly Place? Each female lead has at least one, or in some cases two guys Who outwit them regularly.
Never watched Lizzie McGuire or that's so raven. In Wizards of Waverly Place I do remember Justin being the butt of jokes even though he was the smarter one.
I don't know about that. What about Phil of the future? Or Cory in the house? Zack and Cody?
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 04:12:42 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)*
Zack was the irresponsible dumbass and most of the male kids on that show were dumbasses in their own way. Woody did stupid things that fucked shit up, and Cody (I think i remember this right) is the only boy in that show that isn't really an idiot, but he has obsessive compulsive disorder, at least I can tell.
EDIT: The dumbass i was talking about was Zack. Changed Cody to Zack
If you're going to characterize them as idiots, it's not really fair to ignore their stupid female counterparts. London Tipton is by far the dumbest character in that show, and Mosby isn't stupid.
And then I love how everyone is just ignoring Gordo who is probably one of the smartest characters Disney has created, along with Lizzie's little brother Matt who is constantly coming up with clever tricks and hijinks. Then there were also the boys from Hannah Montana, like Moises, and eddie from that's so raven. He was always the one correcting Chelsea, who was clearly the airhead character in the show.
Oh, and don't even get me started the older brother and wizards of Waverly place. You know, the one who outperformed his little sister and everything, got good grades, And stayed out of trouble?
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 18:58:23 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)
Those are just a few outliers. What i say is there's far more dumbass boys and smart girls in disney shows than their counterparts. Here i'll list a few to start:
Miley's brother from Hannah Montana.
PJ and Gabe from Good Luck Charlie
Woody and Zack from Zack and Cody
That one long haired brother from Dog with a Blog.
Who's to say that yours aren't the outliers? I've given more than enough examples to say that they at least vary in intelligence,
Eddie from that's so raven
Older brother from wizards
Corey from that's so raven
Matt from Lizzie McGuire
Gordon from Lizzie McGuire
Mosby from Zack and Cody
TJ from Smart Guy
Moises from Hannah Montana
Oliver from Hannah Montana
Jett Jackson
Phil of the Future
Austin from Austin and Ally
Ravi and Luke from Jessie
Hell I'd even throw Louis from Even Stevens up there. He's quirky but not stupid.
Also, PJ isn't stupid. He's childish but even on the show's wiki it describes him as resourceful and intelligent.
And the long-haired brother (Tyler) may come off as stupid, but let's not forget he's an actual math genius in the show. He's just a bit lazy and airheaded. His aptitude for math and manipulation shows he's not just some dumb male character.
[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 19:39:10 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)*
Ok you have a fair point. But this is a starter pack, and most of the MODERN disney shows have more stupid male characters than stupid female characters. From what I got from these shows were that most girls are intelligent and most of the boys are an extreme: They're either annoyingly geeky or annoyingly stupid. Yes you have the stereotypical dumb rich girl (London), but that's an outlier.
EDIT: You do realize I haven't watched these terrible shows in like 5 years, right? I should've pointed it out tbh that i barely remember these dumb shows.
That is also fair enough. It just seemed like a lot of people in the comments were specifically talking about older shows from when they were growing up. Maybe I'm older than the average age now, but I saw some references to some shows from the mid 2000's. To be fair, I only know the new shows in passing from my siblings and I had to Google most of their names. I'm surprised how much effort I put into that comment.
[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 20:36:34 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)
The new ones are even more shit. Some dude bro named Jake Paul who got lucky by being attractive got everything he could ever ask for. INCLUDING A FUCKING SHOW ON DISNEY. Fuck talent, just be hot! Yeah 2017 is the best place to be where the hot people always win!
Yeah, they look fucking horrible. It's a shame, because they had some really good shows with Hannah Montana being the last bearable one. Their original movies used to be pretty great too. Now I can barely stand being in the room while the channel it's on.I think Cartoon Network had the right idea bringing back some of their old classics thrown in with some new favorites. That was a good move

No wonder these little kids are so fucked in the head to watch these dude bros that shouldn't even be famous.
Hi, I'm Peter, I wanna be famous!
Lol, these selfies are so random. Hey Ned, I'm so awesome right?
Durr durr, Ned's fat!
Several bad high school jokes later.
[Cringe track]
Two bland love interests
Millenial clothes
Annoying mentor who doesn't believe in me
Employee who's supposed to care about me, but doesn't give two fucks (Happy)
Peter didn't want to be famous, otherwise he would have revealed his identity to everyone. He just wanted to prove to Tony that he could be a hero. And Ned being fat wasn't the joke. That's just how he looked.
Yes, he wanted to prove that he was more than just a "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man". He didn't want to be in the avengers for the sake of being famous. I don't want to spoil the movie, but something happens in the end that shows he would rather not be an avenger.
Dumb character says something that actually shows that they were dumb the whole time.
Laugh track
Example: mr. Mosby: you shouldnt play golf in the lobby
London tipton: me mosby's right you guys
Pause
London tipton: we should play in the kitchen
Audience dies

The only stupid character i've found funny in all of TV and internet, was Caboose from Red Vs Blue. They just made his character so right that he's annoyingly stupid but it's funny and sad, because he treats everything like a child would, and when he gets sad is the worst part to watch, because its sad.
If its Nick shows we only needed Dan Sneider picture for a starter pack

Yeah.... if you tore out the walls and floors and put in a cockload of insulation (but not before going to town with a few cans of Great Stuff to seal cracks) and replaced all of the glass with double-pane, vacuum sealed shit with a reflective coating to block out most of the sun, and used about 150%-200% more AC than you needed BTU-wise, then it might be comfortable in the summer.
Short of a $10k remodel (if you did the work yourself), Arnold's pretty screwed.

I just looked it up, and apparently the creator says that it's a mix of Seattle, Portland, and Brooklyn. It's weird because with the sorta brownstoney style of the buildings, I keep thinking New York too, but I definitely remember some very PNW names being thrown around in the show.
lackadays · 8 points · Posted at 00:23:18 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
The density, building style and that the schools are named just by number always made me think NYC, so I was surprised when I read a few years ago that Seattle was an influence.

I dunno, i think people just get attached to certain shows. I personally don't think the suite life or that's so Raven were any better than the rest.
Disney live action tween sitcoms all have the same formula, and when i was younger they were all annoying, but after like 7-10 years they become nostalgic to everyone. Like now even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire are considered 'classics' but when i was little, i remember just being frustrated that they turned off the cartoons for those dumb families
staymad101 · 5 points · Posted at 00:00:48 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
I agree with suite life, that's so raven, even stevens etc, but lizzie mcguire was excellent! And so were the true classic disney 90s show (flash forward, ready or not, in a heartbeat, etc)
Draav · 14 points · Posted at 00:13:16 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
They all seem about the same level of hokey to me. They all have moments, but really it seems more about how young you were, if it was like the first one you watched, and how much you liked the characters. If you like lizzie oand gordo and whoever its great, not so much otherwise
staymad101 · 9 points · Posted at 00:22:46 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Not personally. I started high school when lizzie mcguire started so I wasn't particularly young. But one thing that made that show stand out was that it was single camera and didn't have a laugh track I think? I thought Wizards was pretty funny too. There are a couple other kids shows I enjoyed even as an adult (like the Haunting Hour).

FrenchGrammar · 233 points · Posted at 15:10:40 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
No, Disney have something against mothers. They are either dead, not in the picture or in the form of evil step mom. This is even true for the old princess disney movies!

[deleted] · 78 points · Posted at 15:33:53 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
A lot of fiction in general does this. The lifespan of a mother in a story is like two minutes.

There was an askreddit post a while back along what the most dangerous jobs were, and the top answer was "anime protagonist's mom." It really does apply to all media though.
RedKrypton · 6 points · Posted at 23:04:03 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)

It opens up more writing opportunities
thisshortenough · 69 points · Posted at 16:56:18 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
Well damn that's a shitty thing to say about mothers really. If you can't write in a mother character because she'll automatically ruin the fun then that just tells me you're a lazy writer or that you have a bad opinion of mothers
ColonParentheses · 2 points · Posted at 18:15:26 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
In fairness, the role of a mother is generally (archetypically in western fiction) that of Chief Caretaker. Fictional adventures generally involve risk and danger as conflict is encountered and overcome. So a good mother probably wouldn't let their child, for example, fight a dragon.
thisshortenough · 12 points · Posted at 18:53:23 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
And a good father would? Yes historically women have been caretakers but if you as a modern writer can't think of any way to fit a mother in to a story without just making her the fun killer, you're a lazy writer.
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 19:41:14 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
TIL all writers are obligated to write strong motherly roles into their stories because all moms must be represented prominently regardless of:
the writer's intended audience
the influence the role has on plot development
the influence the role has on character development
the relevance the role has to the story
Come on, don't be ridiculous. If you don't like the stories that don't feature mothers write your fucking own that does.
thisshortenough · 9 points · Posted at 21:11:06 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying, that mothers need to be prominently featured in every story ever written. /s
Obviously, I'm not saying a mother character has to be relevant to every story, but if you never include mother characters because it's too hard to write them in and have the characters go on adventures, you've a shitty opinion on mothers or you're taking lazy shortcuts
[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 07:05:29 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)
Or the mother simply isn't relevant to the plot or intended audience for what you choose to write. Jackass.
thisshortenough · 3 points · Posted at 08:19:09 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)

raouldukesaccomplice · 8 points · Posted at 19:20:41 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
(For much of history, the notion of a widowed woman with young children going out on dates in search of a new husband would have been seen as controversial or indecent, whereas a man whose wife died could "court" a new one without anyone thinking he was a slut or dishonoring his late spouse.)
thisshortenough · 3 points · Posted at 21:13:06 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah see that would be great if it was ever explained but most of these shows and movies don't, the mother is either said to have died years ago or she's not mentioned at all. And given how prominent this trope is now, maybe it's time writers admitted that they're being a little lazy and started examining how mothers can be involved in a story.
The Hunger Games did it just fine, even gave a complex relationship between the main character and the mother, didn't stop her going on adventures.

Libertarians are some of the most deluded cunts on the planet.

......
Why so mad?
IKilledYourBabyToday · 4 points · Posted at 01:59:41 on July 11, 2017 · (Permalink)

I used to, and still enjoy old Disney Channel shows like Brotherly Love and Smart Guy. Then the next generation of shows was ushered in and I would occasionally watch Even Stevens. Fast forward many years and every time I catch a glimpse of a Disney show, it seems like everyone is shouting and not even trying to manage their ADHD.

TBH I think you only enjoyed those shows because you were a kid when you watched them. You were in the target demographic for those shows. When I was really young, I used to hate sitcoms like that's so raven and Hannah Montana. I would only watch cartoons. Then when I got a little older, I started to like the sitcoms like Suite life on deck and good luck Charlie. Then toward the end of middle school, I began to get bored of Disney channel and began to find the shows annoying.

At beginning of season 3, reformat location, drop 1-2 adult actors, and make a regular a semi-regular. See: Ant Farm; Liv & Maddy; Lab Rats...

can you explain what happened to the shows and how hey moved and such please? I'm curious
bmtri · 96 points · Posted at 15:00:11 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)*
I'm guessing production costs get higher every season, sets run down, want to make the show look "new", adult actors cost more than kids, or maybe actors actually leave on their own.
raouldukesaccomplice · 10 points · Posted at 19:33:46 on July 10, 2017 · (Permalink)

Masta-Blasta · 1 points · Posted at 16:19:44 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)
That's just a few that I can remember.
Masta-Blasta · 1 points · Posted at 19:21:57 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)*
Who's to say that yours aren't the outliers? I've given more than enough examples to say that they at least vary in intelligence,
Eddie from that's so raven Older brother from wizards Corey from that's so raven Matt from Lizzie McGuire Gordon from Lizzie McGuire Mosby from Zack and Cody TJ from Smart Guy Moises from Hannah Montana Oliver from Hannah Montana Jett Jackson Phil of the Future Austin from Austin and Ally Ravi and Luke from Jessie
Masta-Blasta · 2 points · Posted at 20:33:04 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)
Masta-Blasta · 2 points · Posted at 20:42:08 on July 12, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah, they look fucking horrible. It's a shame, because they had some really good shows with Hannah Montana being the last bearable one. Their original movies used to be pretty great too. Now I can barely stand being in the room while the channel it's on.I think Cartoon Network had the right idea bringing back some of their old classics thrown in with some new favorites. That was a good move
