There's a smart water bottle that's already shipped a couple of units. For some reason, it always shows up on my wall. The comments on their posts are always hilarious.
I am so disappointed in this product! It was almost impossible to get paired. I had to take out the battery and reinstall it to get it to pair and now it does not track my water consumption.
Are you guys extending the capability of phones that are able to accept and sync with the bottle? I have a one plus 3...
Does this only work for Fitbit? I have an Apple Watch
I just used my bottle a couple of weeks and suddenly it stopped syncing. It took me a while to found out the it ran out of battery.

A sensor inside the bottle will automatically record how many oz/ml you are drinking.
So yeah, I guess it allows you to refill a half-empty bottle without messing up your math.
I'd much rather fight with bluetooth pairing issues and various hardware issues than to lose track of how much water I drank on a given day.
I'd add thermal insulation (aluminium, odourless), and it would include a refrigerating, filtering, wireless charging water station. Sell for a lot and harvest those margins.

You can drop the smug "snowflake" comments, buddy. Soundtrack dissonance is used mainly for three reasons: irony, emotional distancing, or emotional amplification. The emotional amplification bit is when you play happy music over a sad scene, for example, to really hit home just how sad what's going on is. Because there's a bigger emotional distance from happy > sad than there is between neutral > sad.
American pro-war scenarios would never use Born in the USA in a knowing way, because
a) being pro-war can't be done with irony because it's essentially earnest
b) and c) it's not emotional distancing or emotional amplification, because Born in the USA is a rousing, aggressive song so it "fits" with the pro-war emotional effect.

I heard "All Along the Watchtower" (the Jimi Hendrix version) in a Chanel commercial last night. I was so confused.
The worst part (this is true of the Canned Heat song) is they usually chop up the song (most often removing the chorus or lines that don't fit their commercial narrative) and ruin it further. I'm sure 80โ of people don't notice but I sure as fuck do.
Or worse when it is some shitty cover version of a classic rock song because it is a cheaper. And then there are movie trailers that will have a "moody" cover version of a classic rock song.
Once saw a Bryer's commercial that used "Get Together", and I immediately thought of "Territorial Pissings" by Nirvana, which is probably not something Bryer's intended for
The only time it's good PR is in the face of bad PR. Like when a recall happens and the CEO is on screen in "their" living room with their family apologizing. You should put your face on that to own up to your mistakes.
Almost every other time it's stilted and forced. You can get a no name to come in there and make you look pro for so little.

The band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is amazing and have a bunch of albums after that song came out. Some of it's kinda artsy but Id say it's all really powerful cool stuff. Definitely worth checking them out, they're my favorite band for sure (wish they were known for more than just that song though)!
They've gone downhill pretty significantly but yeah their first two albums are fantastic

I disagree on them going downhill. Their style is drastically different, but personally I still really enjoy a lot of their newer stuff. I would say, they evolved as a band into something unique and new rather than fade out of existence playing more of the same generic folk sound or going more pop (like Mumford and Sons and a lot of the other folky bands of 6 years ago)...if you're interested check out the songs "No Love Like Yours", "Wake up the Sun", and "Ballad of Yaya" off their newest album, PersonA, they're probably the easiest to just listen to one off.
i agree. i think jade leaving was a step in the right direction for them moving forward in their artistry.

It definitely was a turning point for the band in a lot of ways. I remember seeing them right after she left and there was definitely a somber feeling that something was missing. Although more recently they definitely have their own unique energy as they've clearly grown as a band since she left. I will say, it's always...I almost wanna say cringey, when they play "Home" without Jade, because they don't do the whole "Jade...Alexander..." part of the song, instead Alex goes to the audience and asks people to tell their story (always clarifying he doesn't want them to just repeat the recorded version of him and Jade). So sometimes you get really good stories and sometimes people just get shocked or have nothing to say. In retrospect, I almost wish they had never recorded that part of the original song, cause even when Jade was still with them, they would improv it differently every time they sang it, so having a recorded "official" version always feels unnatural knowing that!

Commercials tend to use alot of trendy pop indie songs it seems. They're catchy and upbeat. But yea it gets old after they use the same song for alot of commercials.

Even if they're obviously bad to you and a billion other people, that doesn't mean that people can't subjectively enjoy them. You can't tell someone that their opinion is wrong, that's not how this works.
You can critique all you want, but if someone replies to your critique with "well actually I like it a lot" you can't then say "no you don't because reason X"
I dont think anybody has ever told somebody "no you dont" when they said they like something. I've never even heard of that and I've been in internet arguments for damn near 20 years now!
My point is that there is a discernable value in any given art or even genre where people who are passionate about that art of genre of music can overwhelmingly agree is bad or good. To sit there and say that Mozart has the same value as a guy shittily covering bon jovi on a poorly tuned guitar because all taste is subjective is just disingenuous and you know it.
no one said anything about it having the same value, but it should be possible to accept that someone may enjoy listening to a poorly tuned guitar more than listening to mozart. I know people who HATE mozart with a passion. does that make their opinion on music or their taste wrong? does that make his music any less-good? no of course not, because it's a subjective opinion they have
I would argue there is a strong correlation between value and perception of quality.
I would also, again, argue that nobody out there is questioning whether you personally enjoy something. They're just saying the thing you enjoy is obviously bad. I've never yet seen a person actually question whether somebody is telling the truth that they enjoy X.
It wasn't said in exactly those words but that was the sentiment, someone gave their opinion saying it was a nice song, and someone replied explicitly "no it's bad", and while both opinions are valid there's definitely an overall sentiment (as seen in further replies) that they each think the other's opinion is wrong, which is just silly since it's an opinion

A song is supposed to make you close your eyes and take you into the song land. But this tune is so instantly recognizable that you just can't engage in this willing suspension of disbelief while listening to good songs.
As I heard the first few seconds of this song, I instantly felt a little grating familiarity, weird uncomfortable feeling because of corporate fakeness you get while watching ads that play this song.

Cage the Elephant has a great bluesy rock and roll vibe- check out Take It or Leave It, Come a Little Closer, Cigarette Daydreams. I haven't heard a song I don't like from them, just a great group and an awesome live performance.
I've never heard of any of these bands, but after a quick listen on Youtube they are all better than American Authors. They all sound kind of similar - what's the name of the genre?
edit: indie rock covers a lot, demarco claims his music is "jizz jazz" which owns, washed out kinda started/propelled the chillwave era but that's also sort of meaningless. all of real estate and mac demarco's shit is awesome, try ducktails, kurt vile, war on drugs if you like that.
I think I once heard it described as jangle rock. Washed Out is chillwave though.
I just like that whole lo-fi apathetic beachy aesthetic, idk. Bands like Neon Indian, Toro Y Moi, Beach Fossils, etc. it just makes me think of good times I guess.

Yeah I was more talking about that era. Like they both came into the limelight at the same time, so hearing that song brings me back to seeing those other bands I named. Like I'm pretty sure I only heard that pop whistle indie song on the radio, but just based on the time period it was popular it makes me think of those other bands.
Here are millennials. They are in a car. They are carefree. They drive wherever the wind takes them, because they are millennials. One of them has a guitar. They may be in a band, because they are millennials, and creativity is important to them. It is unclear how they have managed to afford this car. Millennials do not buy cars. They just go on road trips.
It kind of makes me mad that hipsters even make this garbage, since I thought hipsters were all about liking obscure music, and this is just superficial fake folksy pop garbage.
It's not really their fault. When that one initially obscure artistic/musical piece is created but manages to become mass appreciable, the ignorant mainstream fucks usually take it and overdue it to the point of it becoming universally loathed.
This is one of my pet peeves. I am a musician and I like to play and listen to all types of music. But God I despise this cheesy "cute animal youtube-sque" music.....

At my uni there's a giant TV screen which plays inspirational adverts for the very university I am already in with music EXACTLY like this literally every time I walk past it. I walk past it 6-8 times a day, drives me insane.

130 - Real talk: I briefly tried writing commercial music. I was asked to write a happy song for a Nissan commercial and I wrote the most generic, folk pop thing I could come up with and it fits this starter pack perfectly:
21 - You'll notice I included an asterisk that excluded the founders of companies. Michael Dublin is one of the founders of Dollar Shave Club and he can actually act (IMO). I'm thinking of examples like the CEO of AARP in their "You Don't Know AARP" com...

They do this as a subliminal message. They are trying to imply that there methods and ideology is simple and straightforward, like the music. They avoid complex orchestral music so as to appeal to the largest number of people as possible. this is not by accident. It is very well thought out.
Also, don't forget the smug, intelligent, and handsome black guy who totally plays things cool while explaining something to the dumb and goofy white guy.

Unrelated, but I was browsing the top posts on here when I saw this. I'm an audio student and do freelance composing... Oddly enough, that type of music always produces the kind of seething rage which can only be satisfied by the still-warm blood of a freshly sacrificed newborn.
It got kind of morbidly hilarious in the prescription drug ads where they use this vomit inducing music when they had to start listing terrible side effects to the drugs to this upbeat music.
"May cause diarrhea, suicidal thoughts or death. Talk to your doctor to see if ____ is right for you!"
The soundtrack to every god damn commercial on tv with kids running around with the dog, talking about the important things in life...advertising garbage bags.
Whatever. I prefer whistles, claps, ukuleles, and xylophones over shitty commercial jingles. I also prefer it over good songs being played in commercials. I hate that eminence front is played in gmc commercials.
I was just making an observation. I'm also biased since I do video production for businesses and find myself constantly using music like this as per request of the client.
I also work in video production and I like this kind of music to add to videos. It's easy, cheap, and I happen to like the sound. I just want to know what the alternative is. Like, if people don't like this kind of music, then what is the ideal music for commercials?
There are plenty of alternatives, but it depends on the edit youre going for. Spending some time on AJ you'll find plenty of music thats not as cliche.

Well the licensing fees they charge clients are really low, and you get a percentage of it. The exact amount escapes me, but I typically end up with $9-10 per sale. It is what it is, microstock sites are a volume game.

You can drop the smug "snowflake" comments, buddy. Soundtrack dissonance is used mainly for three reasons: irony, emotional distancing, or emotional amplification. The emotional amplification bit is when you play happy music over a sad scene, for example, to really hit home just how sad what's going on is. Because there's a bigger emotional distance from happy > sad than there is between neutral > sad.
American pro-war scenarios would never use Born in the USA in a knowing way, because
a) being pro-war can't be done with irony because it's essentially earnest
b) and c) it's not emotional distancing or emotional amplification, because Born in the USA is a rousing, aggressive song so it "fits" with the pro-war emotional effect.

I heard "All Along the Watchtower" (the Jimi Hendrix version) in a Chanel commercial last night. I was so confused.
The worst part (this is true of the Canned Heat song) is they usually chop up the song (most often removing the chorus or lines that don't fit their commercial narrative) and ruin it further. I'm sure 80โ of people don't notice but I sure as fuck do.

The only time it's good PR is in the face of bad PR. Like when a recall happens and the CEO is on screen in "their" living room with their family apologizing. You should put your face on that to own up to your mistakes.
Almost every other time it's stilted and forced. You can get a no name to come in there and make you look pro for so little.
Ugh. I work in advertising so I can imagine the banging your head against the wall that happened when the note came that the CEO wanted into the shoot. At least I hope that was a fucking note and not their idea...

The band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is amazing and have a bunch of albums after that song came out. Some of it's kinda artsy but Id say it's all really powerful cool stuff. Definitely worth checking them out, they're my favorite band for sure (wish they were known for more than just that song though)!

I disagree on them going downhill. Their style is drastically different, but personally I still really enjoy a lot of their newer stuff. I would say, they evolved as a band into something unique and new rather than fade out of existence playing more of the same generic folk sound or going more pop (like Mumford and Sons and a lot of the other folky bands of 6 years ago)...if you're interested check out the songs "No Love Like Yours", "Wake up the Sun", and "Ballad of Yaya" off their newest album, PersonA, they're probably the easiest to just listen to one off.

It definitely was a turning point for the band in a lot of ways. I remember seeing them right after she left and there was definitely a somber feeling that something was missing. Although more recently they definitely have their own unique energy as they've clearly grown as a band since she left. I will say, it's always...I almost wanna say cringey, when they play "Home" without Jade, because they don't do the whole "Jade...Alexander..." part of the song, instead Alex goes to the audience and asks people to tell their story (always clarifying he doesn't want them to just repeat the recorded version of him and Jade). So sometimes you get really good stories and sometimes people just get shocked or have nothing to say. In retrospect, I almost wish they had never recorded that part of the original song, cause even when Jade was still with them, they would improv it differently every time they sang it, so having a recorded "official" version always feels unnatural knowing that!

Even if they're obviously bad to you and a billion other people, that doesn't mean that people can't subjectively enjoy them. You can't tell someone that their opinion is wrong, that's not how this works.
You can critique all you want, but if someone replies to your critique with "well actually I like it a lot" you can't then say "no you don't because reason X"

I dont think anybody has ever told somebody "no you dont" when they said they like something. I've never even heard of that and I've been in internet arguments for damn near 20 years now!
My point is that there is a discernable value in any given art or even genre where people who are passionate about that art of genre of music can overwhelmingly agree is bad or good. To sit there and say that Mozart has the same value as a guy shittily covering bon jovi on a poorly tuned guitar because all taste is subjective is just disingenuous and you know it.

I would argue there is a strong correlation between value and perception of quality.
I would also, again, argue that nobody out there is questioning whether you personally enjoy something. They're just saying the thing you enjoy is obviously bad. I've never yet seen a person actually question whether somebody is telling the truth that they enjoy X.

eh its good enough for a pop song but the corporate overuse ruined it completely.
A song is supposed to make you close your eyes and take you into the song land. But this tune is so instantly recognizable that you just can't engage in this willing suspension of disbelief while listening to good songs.
As I heard the first few seconds of this song, I instantly felt a little grating familiarity, weird uncomfortable feeling because of corporate fakeness you get while watching ads that play this song.

But the early 2000s until 2014 or so was really fun. Lots of good dreamy wavy pop. Reminds me of house shows and endless summer vibes. Obama was president and things got real weird and post modern. The rigidity of the bush years was relaxing.

I also work in video production and I like this kind of music to add to videos. It's easy, cheap, and I happen to like the sound. I just want to know what the alternative is. Like, if people don't like this kind of music, then what is the ideal music for commercials?

There are plenty of alternatives, but it depends on the edit youre going for. Spending some time on AJ you'll find plenty of music thats not as cliche.
