Spekular ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 12:25:16 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I'm oddly attached to the VSE, but it's got lots of annoyances:

  • Dealing with video/images larger than the canvas sucks
  • You can't tell a strip what interpolation to use when scaling something from source to canvas size unless you disable scaling on the strip and add a transform to do the scale.
  • At some framerates it displays the wrong image when going frame-by-frame until you hit "refresh sequencer". I was dealing with 23.3 or something and it would consistently be one frame behind.
  • Mixing a strip + effect with the strip below has occasionally been weird for me, so now I tend to make them into a metastrip and set the blend mode on that instead.
  • Trying to cache audio for videos that are too long crashes Blender.
  • VSE rendering is poorly threaded AFAIK.
  • You can't choose a font for the Text effect (formatting in general sucks), and the input field is tiny.
  • If you install filmic blender and set blender to use it for 3D renders, that will also affect the VSE. There's even a separate VSE setting that didn't fix the issue for me, you have to change the whole color management thing back to sRGB.
  • I wish there were a way to spread out the cached frames. Instead of fullspeed playback for X number of cached frames and then terrible fps, it'd be nice to have an even framerate the whole time. I imagine this could be hard to implement and it might be a problem in other editors too for all I know.

That said, I like it quite a bit anyway.

jtvjan ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:01:19 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Those are more expensive, but still better. Also, why does Premiere exist if After Effects does everything it does and more.

[deleted] ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 22:46:00 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Because it doesn't, not even close. Premiere is an NLE, AE is layer based compositing software. Have you ever used either?

BoogsterSU2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:21:44 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I sadly use AE as a primary video editor. Close enough?

tom_bacon ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 00:05:35 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

While technically possible, any editing functionality you're using in AE would take a fraction of the time in Premiere.

Thatโ€™s iMovie, a free toy. A big TV channel over here uses a โ€œtyping letter by letterโ€ effect for viewer comments sometimes. And they reflow text on-the-fly. So professional.

RichB93 ยท 387 points ยท Posted at 20:34:54 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Jyuconcepts ยท 48 points ยท Posted at 22:44:22 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I think you grossly underestimate how much funding and work is necessary to create and maintain amazing editing software like Premier.

Plus, not everyone who buys a mac is into video editing. Having pricey software incorporated into the device on the off chance that they like videography seems pointless if you ask me.

And, like I said, iMovie is a great application anyway. Not many people realize just how much you can do with it, even if it's behind a couple of lists. And when I say "amateur" I mean anybody who doesn't create videos for a living; people who make vids for fun.

aa93 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 04:50:42 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

chewbaccascousinsbro ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:28:06 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I would say that most true Pro video editors aren't using a laptop as their primary editing workstation. Unless they like running out of disk space and waiting forever for exports/renders.

show_me_ur_fave_rock ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 02:29:21 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 01:18:38 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Davinci Resolve

You need a decent GPU to touch that program though as well as some good ram. It's out of reach for most people who just want to make a movie of their vacation. Lightworks is a decent alternative but your limited to 720p unless you pay.

MrTX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:54:50 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I just finished using it to edit a music video and it ran pretty damn smooth on my 2013 macbook pro. As long as you use it's optimize media function and proxies, then it gave me a full 24fps in playback and rendered a 3 minute music video with some pretty heavy effects in about 9 minutes. I can live with that.

th1341 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 22:45:14 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Edit: I donโ€™t do to much with it. I like to play around with everything. I know a little bit of a lot of programming languages, I like photography, videography, graphic design, web development. You name it, Iโ€™ve probably tried it. Iโ€™m not claiming to be a genius. But I fly racing drone and when I need to edit a video for YouTube, my choice is Adobe at the moment. Not an expert.

DestructionSphere ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:44:05 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

There was a free demo that came with Windows 95. You had to buy the full version. There was also a Nickelodeon version, I didn't have that one unfortunately but a friend of mine did.

Also, there was this creepy as fuck commercial for it.

Honestly, looking back it was probably pretty shitty, but I absolutely loved it as a kid. I'd love to get it running again somehow.

Moath ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:32:12 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You should check it on YouTube. It basically did the resident evil and final fantasy pre rendered background thing and you can place actors in the scenes and have them perform ready made animations. Many hours spent on that thing.

falcon5768 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 00:14:46 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

This blows my mind cause there was a good 15 years there where FCP was the DE FACTO STANDARD for digital editing. Premiere was absolutely trash and Avid was good but expensive as shit

skiskate ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 00:16:23 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Final Cut Pro went to absolute trash after 7.

God know why Apple thought it would be a good idea to appeal to the "average" consumer with professional grade editing software.

Like replacing the render/export menu with "share".

Fucking SHARE?

falcon5768 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:46:27 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Oh I know I was a Xsan administrator for a while for a companies TV production group. After Apple abandoned the Xserve, and went to shit with FCP 8 we moved completely to Premiere. I also worked for Apple in higher education sales in the early 2000's when we were pushing to colleges to switch to Apple for a significantly cheaper price over Avid which was still mostly a hardware solution. It's just shocking how quickly all that inroads crashed down from 3-4 truly boneheaded moves.

Rubix89 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:36:53 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Now Premiere has made great advances in recent years and actually has some credibility behind it. AVID is still the industry standard but I kind of feel their innovation has stagnated over the years. It's real hook is the reliability.

PerfectionismTech ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 01:12:19 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I use Final Cut Pro and no, it's not trash.

Rubix89 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:33:58 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

FCP is kind of like advanced iMovie. The UI is just ugly and counterintuitive if you learned in AVID or Premiere first. But if you're coming directly from iMovie to FCP then it's a great step up.

Although I think AVID is still really ugly in its own right anyways.

PerfectionismTech ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:12:24 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I think any UI is going to seem counterintuitive if you have come from a different program with a different philosophy.

Zagorath ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:27:08 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Find Cut Pro is leaps and bounds better than the others for smaller projects like short films, advertising, online content, etc. It's also, obviously, much better for the prosumer market than any of its competitors. None of them can even touch it in that market.

It's also improved a fuckload since the initial release of X. Most of the criticisms I've seen levied at it were valid then, but are not now. People just haven't updated their opinion in about 5 years (10.0.6 being the version that brought the last of the most common criticisms).

Industry

I'm an Editor/DIT but i'm still college student.

This is all information from my professors who have worked (and are still currently working) in the industry for years.

Avid is still the industry standard, but Premiere is quickly catching up.

Rubix89 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:37:50 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Thank God. I learned AVID first and now it feels like a chore to use in comparison to Premiere.

Rubix89 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:39:19 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I work in the "industry" and I've never seen any serious post house or studio use Vegas.

But I do remember being a part of the AMV scene back in the day and Vegas was all the rage for a lot of young editors. Starting out it had some great capabilities back then but it realistically just can't cut it like the other mentioned programs.

Jascraft22 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:34:18 on August 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Well I got that it was the owner responding on the bot account, I don't know why I phrased it like that. I should have said it's cool that the author of the bot continues to reply to comments on the bot's stuff.

John_Yuki ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 22:52:21 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah the owner is responding. I do it a lot on my bot accounts too. When responding to people when they ask questions it's a lot easier to just stay on the account rather than switch to your main account every time you want to read and then respond to a message.

John_Yuki ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 00:06:17 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The automoderator code is very basic and can only do really simple things. Python is a much more powerful language to use, and can do everything the automoderator can and more. It would be a really neat feature if reddit allowed moderators to code the automoderator using a Python clone language rather than the language it uses currently, but limit things that would be too stressful on the servers.

What's wrong with gifs?

Hurricane_32 ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 21:26:50 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

.gif images are slow-loading, they are usually small in resolution, crappy colors and framerates, and they take up huge ammounts of storage (which might be a problem for slow and/or capped connections.

.gifv (Imgur) or gfys (Gfycat) are much better in every single way.

ipaqmaster ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 21:58:00 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

They're fine for their purpose. Stuff like short animations (like the looping metal slug above) /loading buttons etc.

But dickheads put videos in them which the gif format is so not prepared for that the file is usually anywhere from 20mb to 200mb when stored in a gif.

So it's pretty annoying that apps and web browsers that suppose vuideo playback, aren't being offered a video option. But to be honest, if you're on a device they does NOT support anything but gif files, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DOWNLOAD SOME 100MB GIF? probably not either.

The fact they gfycat even allows you to view the original uploaded gif is stupid. Because that's what everyone began posting instead of video links like their site was designed for.

Them or imgur could easily read your User Agent (e.g. Firefox 3.5.0) and send you the video data instead for some automated optimization but no for some reason nobodies fucking doing that shit.

And now reddits on the upload train too, they said gifs will become videos but that never happened. And uploading videos to Reddit has never loaded slower!

God. Everyone's trying to be 'the guy' and they're all doing it wrong.

Seaflame ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:13:14 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You can't scale the view, though. If you scale the view, you also scale the letters. The idea of an expand is that you increase the letter-spacing (the space between letters beyond the kerning), but keep the letters the same size. That said.. yes, the text box size isn't keeping up with the expansion from the letter-spacing being increased. A silly mistake, to be sure.

Flynamic ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 21:41:10 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Right, yeah I noticed what the actual intended effect was only after writing my comment but left it there because it's kinda semi accurate. Text in video editing should only act like UI text views during editing and not during preview/rendering.

not necessarily, there could be many ways to program the same thing. Maybe they programmed it so that the font slowly gets larger and it tries to fit the text in the line on each frame rather than render the text once and expand it

DemIce ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 21:29:10 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The font doesn't get larger - the gap between letters gets larger. Depending on implementation, Flynamic probably is on the right path. If there's a text box (which would cause line wraps), and the expand effect increases letter-spacing, then that text box must keep up with the rate of expansion. If it doesn't, the text would naturally reflow. There's plenty of work-arounds, but this is definitely a bug that should be an easy fix.

The only thing I found really stupid was calling it a "courageous" move.

Yeah, maybe people prefer bluetooth headphones these days, but the only courage you need for that change is the courage to piss off some of your costumers. And you shouldn't brag about that.

But everything's radical, magical and courageous with Apple. Especially when they are late to the party.

Can't wait to hear them talking about how they invented the seamless smartphone display.

broccoliKid ยท 66 points ยท Posted at 20:13:26 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

the only courage you need for that change is the courage to piss off some of your costumers.

There were people that would never buy audio gear with a 1/4 jack 30 years ago. Times chabge

ColdBallsTF2 ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 01:13:04 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Except those still have plenty of uses, even today. While bluetooth devices might be a favourable option for some, it still has plenty of downsides compared to the standard headphone jack.

You have to make sure two devices (your phone and your headphones) are charged, the audio quality often isn't great and your phone uses more battery because of bluetooth.

TheNinjaFennec ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 01:19:15 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I wouldn't be opposed to a different audio port becoming the new standard if it was smaller, achieved equivalent or better quality, and was still stable. The problem is that bluetooth is only solving one of those problems, while creating more of its own. The audio quality is noticeably worse (and has a much lower ceiling for quality), keeping a charge now becomes an issue for something that people had never had to previously think about, and the only thing it allows the corporations behind the switch to do is gimp their own devices. Sure, phones without the 3.5mm can be engineered to be thinner, but along with that comes smaller and smaller batteries. Now not only do you have to charge your earbuds, but you have to charge your actual phone more often too. I realize that last point isn't the best argument, as it's essentially just arguing for (arguably) artificial limitations. But that's what's going to happen without that limitation in place. Bluetooth isn't really an improvement over 3.5mm at all, which is why people are upset about the slow shift. Times change, but they're supposed to change for the better.

AlexanderBeta213 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:13:40 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

About the charging phone fact: the iPhone 7 has an amazing battery life, like 24 hours, many people used it with low power mode for an entire week! So thatโ€™s not really a problem.

I have the AirPods, and i found the sound quality the same as my old buds, but i would prefer hearing an expert about this.

BrownNote ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:47:28 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

ahouse101 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 02:28:01 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

As opposed to what? Migrating between different analog jacks is not the same as removing any analog option at all for wireless. I have no problem finding different phones that have a headphone jack, and most people I know agree, including my tech illiterate family members who are really bummed to have to switch off of iPhones they've been on for years.

I know in the long run, Apple will do fine if they decide to keep it off, but unlike other things Apple's killed off (e.g. flash), some people will be unwilling to give up a physical analog headphone jack. The headphone jack is the single most ubiquitous connector in technology right now, an international standard on devices from desktop computers to phones, with support for literally any device that can play analog audio. It's going nowhere soon, and it will always exist.

I love Bluetooth and use it often - I have Bluetooth headphones and a Bluetooth receiver for my main stereo system, but just like WiFi doesn't replace Ethernet entirely, Bluetooth (and equivalent systems) will never replace physical analog connections.

gsfgf ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:19:32 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Guessing you'll stop buying phones in the next few phones? Because all phones will eventually (very soon) stop offering headphone jacks.

You sound similar to the people who complained about removable batteries a few years ago.

ahouse101 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 02:22:42 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

There will always be phones with a headphone jack - it's been a universal connector for literally decades and is still used on equipment across the technological spectrum. It's not even remotely comparable to removable batteries, which have entirely different benefits and no real standard. I won't buy an iPhone is they keep it removed (which is a shame, they're good phones), and I will switch off the Galaxy line if they remove it.

Rumors aside, I highly doubt many companies will follow suit - there isn't much of an advantage to removing the jack, it was a silly decision on Apple's part. Just like WiFi hasn't replaced (and won't replace) Ethernet, Bluetooth and equivalent systems will not replace physical analog jacks.

honda27 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 03:46:35 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Non-removable batteries are still complete horseshit. Not having a jack is also complete horseshit, and will remain so.

Disagree if apple didn't have plans to remove it, I don't believe it would even be on the table to remove the headphone jack for at least a few more years while we wait for better Bluetooth or alternatives to it.

But OEMs follow Apple. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it's short sighted.

I need a wired option because of my cochlear implant (I'm deaf and the CI helps me hear). I use an audio cable to connect my cochlear implant to whatever I'm playing audio with, be it my phone or the computer or my PS4 controller. The audio cable uses the headphone jack so...

For_TwinTea ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 20:56:05 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks for the info. Hopefully most Android phones keep the jack until Bluetooth is more reliable. It seems silly that technology like a CI would partner up with one tech company instead of continuing to make one implant that's compatible with all kinds of phones, audio jack and Bluetooth alike

gsfgf ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:21:26 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Then buy an Android phone with a 3.5mm jack. And you can get a microSD card too.

I think Apple's shown that the average consumer doesn't really care about the lack of headphone jack. And those who do have switched away from the iPhone.

I'm just mad that other Android manufacturers are following the decision. I don't get it - there was so much backlash, and a bunch of manufactures poked fun at it. And then went and did it themselves. :(

They used a plug that screws into the hole similar to a lifeproof case. It's really lame if you don't care about that jack being there in the first place and it's efficiency wore out over time. Lifeproof cases suck too because you have to buy a new one when it wears out (only 6 months for mine). a solid surface with no jack at all holds up continuously.

SinkTube ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:40:06 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

lmao, you have to be joking. apple doesnt have to lower prices to outcompete anyone, apple has a monopoly on iOS and the apple logo, and that's enough to keep people buying no matter what they do

because having a monopoly doesnt mean much if it's on a product nobody wants?

txarum ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:13:33 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

then its not a monopoly. its quite literally the opposite of one

monopoly is about supply. how much demand there is is completely irrelevant

txarum ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:17:45 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

but other people make smartphones. so you can't make a shitty expensive smartphone and sell it. they will buy something else. therefore they don't have a monopoly. you don't have a monopoly if other people can provide the same thing as you can. and lots of people can make just as good phones as a iphone

SinkTube ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:56:03 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

txarum ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:07:34 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

thats not a monopoly. thats called selling a brand. having a monopoly means owning significantly of something there is a demand for

iOS is not a marked. it just happens to be a popular brand. smartphones is a marked. smartphones has a demand. you have to continue working on improving your product. or else other people will outsell you in that marked. and that means you can't just ignore cost and imagine everyone is going to buy your product.

SinkTube ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:59:41 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

if you abstract enough you can say the same for phones. smartphones arent a market, they're just a kind of computer

txarum ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:03:19 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

no that is not the same thing. there is not a need for ios. but there is a need for smartphones. that is a own marked. if suddenly apple where to build all smartphones they would have a monopoly on smartphones. ASUS could not come in and try to sell their laptops as a alternative to smartphones. because it is a different marked

SinkTube ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:10:07 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

there is not a need for io

i agree, but tell that to the fanboys

but seriously there are a lot of people who depend on iOS. android is not a valid alternative to them

ASUS could not come in and try to sell their laptops as a alternative to smartphones. because it is a different marked

and samsung cant sell a galaxy as an alternative to an iphone, because it too is a different market. iOS/android is as different as smartphone/laptop to a lot of people

txarum ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:35:34 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

the fact that a guy would never buy anything does not mean its a monopoly. if a guy can't buy anything else. then it is a monopoly.

the fact that only apple devices run Angry Birds 8k. does not mean that apple has a monopoly on devices that can run that app. because that app can be updated to other phones. if apple makes the only phones strong enough to run that app. then it is a monopoly. a monopoly on superior phones. but apple does not have that. and the marked on superior phones is not large enough to allow you to ramp up the prices. which is what you supposedly said they could.

SinkTube ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:39:57 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

if a guy can't buy anything else

then nothing is a monopoly. you can always buy something else

because that app can be updated to other phones

haha what? it's not a monopoly because it's theoretically possible for another device to exist that can do the same thing?

a monopoly on superior phones

hardware specs isnt the only thing that can make a phone superior. the unique, proprietary software on it can be just as important. and the demand for that is more than enough to ramp up prices

I haven't heard.

Either Apple is correct and headphone jacks are a relict of the past (at least in the high priced segment). Or it's not and the decision is courageous but stupid.

Removing obsolete ports just isn't courageous. Apple didn't brag about removing firewire, or floppy or optical disc drives. They just did it and didn't rub it in. And they weren't the first in removing either of these.

It's no big deal either way. I just felt about it like I felt about the car pool karaoke. It was a stupid way to announce it.

well___duh ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 20:29:16 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

And if you go to /r/apple, they'll defend it saying Apple still sold millions of iPhone 7s and 7+s despite the loss of a headphone jack.

Except...there's no definite number for that.

Apple's Q4 2016/Q1 2017 numbers
Apple's Q2/Q3 2017 numbers

Although it says they've sold over 215M iPhones since the iPhone 7 was released, nowhere does it differentiate which phones were which. Of those 215M, it could've been a majority of non-iPhone 7s (Phone 6, 6S, and SE). Of course, it could also be a majority of iPhone 7s, but we'll never know. Apple never gives those details.

Me personally, I'm hoping a majority of those sales were not iPhone 7s, giving Apple a sign that people care more about the headphone jack than they thought. Especially when there was no engineering-related reason to remove it. Their official response during the keynote was they removed it for a bigger Taptic engine and battery. Except a bigger vibrator motor does not really improve the iOS experience by much (definitely not enough to warrant removing the headphone jack) and a bigger battery could've easily been done by just making the phone slightly thicker (there's no need for having super-slim phones, especially at the expense of smaller batteries).

The choice to remove the headphone jack was definitely a business decision, not an engineering one. Apple has been all about profit-making business decisions ever since Tim Cook got in charge, which makes sense given that's what he's best at (and probably why Steve Jobs wanted him to be CEO rather than someone with more of an engineering background than an business one).

I wouldn't be surprised if the SE is flying from the shelves for a simple reason โ€“ it's a lot cheaper. An iPhone 7 is 760โ‚ฌ, the SE costs 480โ‚ฌ.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the price of the SE is fine tuned to keep people with lower budgets on Team iOS. A solid Android phone is, let's say, 300โ‚ฌ. A big gap to the 7, but maybe an acceptable one to the SE.

nermid ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 01:05:04 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

there's no need for having super-slim phones, especially at the expense of smaller batteries

Especially since it makes them so fragile that people buy third-party cases that make them thicker, anyway.

It was a deliberate action to fit a larger & longer-lasting battery.

If they wanted to force people to buy wireless earbuds, they wouldn't include a complimentary headphone jack adapter & set of wird headphones in each box.

awesomeshreyo ยท 35 points ยท Posted at 18:49:14 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The battery isn't that much larger, 1960mAh for the 7 Vs 1860mAh for the 6S.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:22:51 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

the battery is outstanding though. 99% of the people in this thread who are bitching and complaining have no relevant experience with any apple products.

Hell, even 80+% of anybody who owns an iPhone has no fucking idea what it can do and how far the functionality reaches. We're just surrounded by clueless ignorant little dicks who simply have no idea just how ignorant they are yet they constantly feel the need to share their wrong opinions with the rest of us.

For example to anybody reading this who owns an iphone 6s or higher, you probably didnt know that you can use force touch to hard press down on the keyboard to turn the keyboard into a trackpad to position the cursor. If you did know that good for you but for you there were at least 10 people who didnt know.

It's little things like that which ad up a lot to the overal quality and experience of a product, but most people can just send some emails, browse facebook, and they barely know how to operate the camera (for example most people even dont know you can take pictures with the volume buttons)

I'm not trying to show off at all or anything i just like to press my point about how strong people's opinions are on products they know nearly nothing about

awesomeshreyo ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:53:15 on August 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It's the same thing with android devices, if not more so - most people don't know how much you can customise any android device.

nanaIan ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 18:43:04 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

They knew that requiring an adapter would piss everyone off, though. So people bought 7-specific headphones and bluetooth ones..

Push those goalposts.

Hryggja ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:31:43 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

So which is it? They wanted to force people to buy AirPods, or the wanted to piss people off with the Lightning headphones? Because pissing people off typically isn't how companies attempt to improve sales.

nanaIan ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:52:03 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Same thing. Piss a person off using the adapter and then they will likely decide to buy AirPods or 7-specific headphones (that Apple still gets money from) since using the adapter was annoying.

Hryggja ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:24:28 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Does Apple make more money off the Lightning headphones than the 3.5 ones?

SinkTube ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:59:13 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

3.5mm is an open standard, apple doesnt make any money when you sell a 3.5mm headphone

[deleted] ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 17:46:02 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Didn't it also allow for better waterproofing though?

Fritzed ยท 48 points ยท Posted at 18:18:37 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

This is a claim that apple made, but it has been thoroughly debunked by the number of devices that have headphone jacks and waterproofing. Everyone always mentions the newer Galaxy phones and Sony Xperia's before that, but really there have been waterproof devices with headphone jacks for decades already even before that.

broccoliKid ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 20:11:46 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Apple didn't claim that though. Their main goal was to get everyone to move to wireless headphones and removing the jack let them fit a better Taptic Engine next to the home button.

well___duh ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 20:31:58 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Their main goal was to get everyone to move to wireless headphones and/or Lightning headphones

FTFY. Apple has everything to benefit from more Lightning accessories being sold since they make a percentage off of it. Also the reason why they'll never switch iOS devices to USB-C. You're more likely to see a portless iOS device than one with a USB-C port.

krispyKRAKEN ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:59:13 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Can you please explain why Google Pixel 2 is doing away with the headphone jack as well? I doubt it's to sell more of their competitor devices.

elephantnut ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 22:58:49 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It might simplify the internal design, and save a tiny bit on the production of each phone.

Honestly though, I think the Pixel team just follows what Apple sets - there was an interview with one of the people who worked on the first Pixel, who said that the reason they didn't go thicker with more battery life was because Apple set the bar the thickness, or something like that.

I personally don't agree with those decisions, but the Pixel is pretty popular now, so what do I know.

well___duh ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:01:36 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Who knows. Google is definitely not in the position to be making such decisions given they sold at best 5 or 10 million Pixels, nowhere near iPhone/Galaxy numbers.

Then again, this is the same Google that seemingly has had the same person in charge of their manufacturing/distribution of phones the past 8 years or so because they never seem to ship more than a dozen phones at a time.

broccoliKid ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:47:06 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Hypothetically yes. But apple isn't pushing for lightning headphones and neither is any other manufacturer. All manufacturers including apple have more to gain from selling wireless headphones. Profits from lightning headphone accessories are just a drop in the bucket.

WildGalaxy ยท 59 points ยท Posted at 17:50:23 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The Galaxy S7 and S8 are waterproof with headphone jacks, along with plenty of other phones. That sounds just like an excuse to me.

In fact, the S8 is more water resistant than the Iphone 7.

poor_decisions ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 19:29:10 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

honestly, i think it's some sort of agreement in the tech industry that wireless is going to be the next epoch in headphones.

sashir ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 19:55:10 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Which means instead of mediocre low priced wired headphones that I buy because I have kids, I will soon be forced to buy really shitty sounding headphones at twice the price that have a poor battery life. I really hope not. Bluetooth means tracking yet another charger and another point of failure, as well as squeezing the margins, leading to worse quality for more money.

I need an ensure and a fucking nap so I can go yell at a cloud later.

SirRealist ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 22:15:11 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

So much not true here. The battery life on my BeatsX are fantastic. And they charge in 5 mins for 2 hours of playback, full charge is about 30 or so minutes. They are not shitty sounding, they are not bass heavy like many assume. And they charge with the same lightning charger the phone uses.

Billyouxan ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 23:16:21 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

They're significantly more expensive than a wired one though, which is the biggest complaint.

Also, who wants to be tracking battery life on headphones? That sounds annoying as hell, no matter how efficient they are.

SirRealist ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 23:18:44 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I agree that they are more expensive. That said, there are high quality earbuds that are wired that are similar in price and quality.

As I mentioned before, I've used mine consistently since they were released and never had a battery issue. I ran out once, charged for 5 mins and I was ok for the remainder of the time I needed them.

wireless is going to be the next epoch in headphones.

I mean, sure. Eventually. When BT headphones last days/weeks on a single charge and/or able to charge to 80% within minutes. And when latency is negligible.

Those are the main two gripes for not using BT headphones right now. Not to mention possible multiple devices requesting access to the same BT headphones at the same time (i.e. you paired them with your phone and computer, and to prevent one from overtaking the other, you pretty much have to turn off BT on one of them). BT currently has way too many problems/inconveniences to fully replace wired headphones at the moment. Buying a device with no headphone jack is committing to that inconvenience.

It'd be like buying a car that feels slightly uncomfortable to sit in. Sure, it has all the bells and whistles, but you always have to find your comfort zone every time you sit in it. Every. Time.

gsfgf ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 00:26:53 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

AirPods go a long way to address those issues. The headphones themselves last a pretty long time, and the case gives you several charges. Charging is still slow, but you can charge the case while using the headphones. And W1 makes pairing work a lot better. I haven't actually tried switching between devices though since I don't really use headphones with the computer.

pmmeyourpussyjuice ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 21:14:47 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

duckvimes_ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:10:56 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

RiZZaH ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:06:44 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Not really, they offered a solution. First guys that dropped a floppy drive also supplied a solution. People are just way too triggered about letting technology advance these days. If everyone keeps wanting more in smaller cases, stuff needs to change and replacing a huge space occupant like a 3.5mm jack is one of them.

TeoIzAwezome ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:20:39 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

But they don't want more in smaller cases. Do you hear anyone with a modern smartphone complaining about how thick their phone is. I'd much rather have a thicker phone that doesn't break instantly, but then how will they make money on repairs.

As far as their editing software goes, they've been dead to the editing world for years now. Some people really held out on FCP 7, hoping in vain that Apple would fix Final Cut and return as an industry leader, but nah, they left it fucked up and unusable and now nobody uses it. Everyone has mostly switched to Premiere or stayed on Avid.

perplex1 ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 21:48:26 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

dead to the editing world

It isn't dead. And initially, yes pro-editors were hesitant to use it. However; FCPX is widely used amongst editors today -- small filmmakers have exploded on the scene as the barrier to entry for videography and filmmaking shrinks and they are using the shit out of it. And if you haven't noticed, with the release of FCPX 10.3, its regarded as apple's comeback back into the editing world. Quite a huge improvement.

MOIST_MAN ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:39:34 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Ok don't knock on FCP 9. Also FCPx has found its niche in kind of a new generation of "filmmakers" who work primarily on YouTube and it suits their needs perfectly. Maybe it's not really living up to the "pro" name but people have made millions with FCPx

KMKtwo-four ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:54:53 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

what exactly does this have to do with titles in imovie?

_dpk ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 19:47:30 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

iMovie has really gone downhill in recent years. In one update they removed the ability to have text titles that didn't have any transition (fading or sliding or whatever) when starting and ending, condemning iMovie edits to eternal amateur appearance in much the same way the zoom function on handycams made all home videos look identically crap.

xavierthegreat ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 19:42:48 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

iMovie sucks lately.. it used to be a lot better!

osteofight ยท 32 points ยท Posted at 21:50:59 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

iMovie needs another overhaul. It as made with the assumption that people want to make home movies, but that's 90s thinking. People want to make Youtube videos with flexible shapes (red circles and arrows), text, and overlays.

luke_in_the_sky ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 00:27:09 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Could be amazing if they make iMovie works like Keynote were you can position anything were you want and use something like Magic Move to create basic animations.

PerfectionismTech ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:14:51 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You can easily add an image file as an overlay and add keyframes in iMovie.

luke_in_the_sky ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:49:17 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You can add only one overlay though and the keyframe implementation is so bad that if you you need to change the time of a keyframe you have to remove it and create other.

osteofight ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:41:50 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That type of editing would be great. A movie is just a bunch of slides in a row, right?

luke_in_the_sky ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:02:40 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

No, but a movie can be made with a bunch of keyframes. You can create a keyframe, add the elements you want in the place you want, add other keyframe and move the elements to another place or transform them.

Something like Adobe Flash, but more simple.

I'm not saying they can use an interface made of slides. I'm saying if they want to make an app easy for amateurs, they can make the elements like text, image overlays and PIP easy to manipulate and more flexible like Keynote elements and Keynote animations.

correcticallytech ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:41:18 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Yes. In 2005 it was my go-to "make a quick edit" to something software. Not just video, but quick audio editing too. You could do so much with it quickly. Convert audio files into different formats, easily create slideshows in minutes and burn them to a DVD just as fast. Super simple and precise video editing. I used it in conjunction with photoshop to make super fast high quality animated gifs from video clips. It was so useful. I used it every day. Then my old laptop died and I had to upgrade. The newer iMovie became too cumbersome. It was as if they overthought it; To try and make it easy for idiots to use they reduced its versatility. Now when I want to do something fast and simple, I go to Adobe Premiere because they have maintained a basic logic in their interface and functionality. If I want to do a quick audio edit, I use Audacity and/or Garageband. So good job Apple... your efforts have driven me away from a single versatile piece of software.

Pretty dumb, but so is using a "title" to write a goddamn essay.

It's a "title" for a movie, Apple probably assumes that most people aren't going to be using more than 5 or 10 words in their titles.

It's still an issue with a 2-word title, if you size the text to take up most of the frame at the beginning of the animation (as most people would do).

luke_in_the_sky ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 00:33:16 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You have to make the title a little smaller and break the lines manually (option+return). That way the title still have room to expand.

I'm not defending Apple, just explaining how to work around this.

SolidKGB ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:05:33 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It's a damn shame that Apple has given the finger to its creative market. iMovie while always an entry level editing software was what I learned on in middle school. I am now a freelance video editor and get paid good money doing it. I used to use final cut around 2007 and it was good. Now it's iMovie deluxe for $299. I wish Apple cared about its creative customers like it did 10 years ago.

I don't know much about video editing software, but isn't Final Cut pretty much the industry standard?

edit: sorry I asked a question, downvoters

smushkan ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 19:06:19 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Final Cut lost quite a bit favour when they made massive changes between FCP7 and FCPX, both in workflow requirements and how the software worked under the hood. The changes were so extreme that FCP7 projects are not natively usable in FCPX and instead have to be converted through intermediate formats.

Can't remember the exact figures, but a survey in one of the industry mags we got last week or the week before puts the order something like this for film and broadcast most popular at the top:

  • Media Composer
  • Adobe Premiere
  • Final Cut X
  • Final Cut 7 (loads of places just stuck with it)
  • Resolve

I can't remeber the exact figures, but I do seem to recall noting that Premiere had significantly more share than FCPX and FCP7 combined.

They used data from this report which unfortunately can't be viewed for free.

That's from memory though, we get so many mags I can't even remember which one did the survey.

I believe the problems with X were mostly fixed within a year. The problem was it was just a mismanaged launch โ€” even the leading engineers knew it was a bad idea to launchX and deprecate 7 at the same time but Apple's marketig didn't want it to look like a half-arsed transition. Instead they made it look like a blundering piece of lunacy.

I went from iMovie to Final Cut Express 3.5 in 2006. Recently upgraded to Final Cut Pro X (current edition). It feels more like iMovie with slightly more features than FCE from 10 years ago. It's easier to imagine my grandma using it than a professional editor. It's got Apple's style with Windows 7 intuition. I really do not enjoy it.

Yes!!! I made a really quick slideshow type iMovie last year for an assembly and I must have retyped and deleted/added my slide that used expand like 10 times. I could not figure out why it was normal in the editing form and then when I would play through it would move. All the other slides were in expand as well but I guess they were short enough so they didn't do it. So annoying. Also dumb from my perspective but in my stressy state I could not solve the problem.

All those shitty YT videos that have that kind of fidgetty text tend to be narrated by a robot too.

jtvjan ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:23:47 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

No, but having a natural sounding robot voice is very easy on Mac. Make a text file containing all your text, call it text.txt and save it in your home directory. Open Terminal and type say -f text.txt -o text.aiff. An .aiff file will appear in your home directory containing the text spoken in your systemโ€™s default voice. Type say -v ? to get a list of installed voices, and use say -v "Name" -f text.txt -o text.aiff to use a specific voice.

Can't tell if you just don't know how to use the title maker or not.

I work on premiere and if I just type in the title, it'll look like that, but if I go into it and change a bunch of settings, then it looks like what you see on tv and movies.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ danman_d ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:46:49 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I know "how to use it," in that I can also make it look correct by adding manual line breaks and fiddling with a bunch of settings. The point is that it's software made to be used by amateurs, and the default settings create terrible results. As a programmer of >10 years, it's clear to me this never would have been an issue if more care had gone into building it the right way in the first place.

Stereogravy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:51:49 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

iMovie was made to quickly make videos like windows movie maker.

But the second purpose is to introduce you to Final Cut Pro. Since it's "final cut lite" it's just like adobe premiere elements and photoshop to photoshop elements, Gimp, or any beginner software.

It's doing it's job exactly like it's suppose to. The titles are on par with keynote and PowerPoint.

I don't know what your complaining about, download presets or templates if it's bugging you that much.

The_Adventurist ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 20:34:21 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Is Apple doing anything new and exciting at all? They still seem entirely focused on the iPhone, a product that was launched 10 years ago. Their professional computers are seriously lagging behind competition and their software division, for all we know, could be an abandoned building filled with cobwebs and spiders.

I haven't been impressed by Apple in a really long time and that makes me think Apple is approaching its age of decline.

apple computers make a fraction of what apple phones do. apple knows what it's doing.
right now the only reason i think apple machines exist are to give developers the ability to make apple software(in a wishy washy, apple doesn't really care about how much time you took to make your shitty app kinda way)
on the other hand windows 10 gets more and more futuristic with every update. bash on linux on windows is really interesting

which is bs because I learned computers and Basic on an apple IIe and the IIgs was my first color computing experience and Arkanoid on the IIgs was my first truly addictive pc gaming experience.

I want early 90s Apple back.

In my opinion apple stopped making exclusively cool stuff right around the time the first iMacs dropped and the MacBook was the last cool product they had but they've killed that too.

give up mate, steve jobs is dead and the bottomline is about mobiles right now.
however it isn't all bad. samsung's dex platform is definitely going to be copied by other people - the more powerful mobile cores get the more inevitable it seems. intel is also trending downwards with their processor sizes and you can get a fairly powerful laptop cpu for cheap
the next gen(i mean 5 years onwards) will be very exciting coz we will either see idevices cement their hold over the market or a new leader(probably intel) lead the charge into portable mobile like computers that are actually capable of doing everything a computer should be able to do and everything a mobile should be able to do

I'm just saddened by it all. I was an absolute apple evangelist now I literally own nothing apple because you really don't have to look very hard to find a clearly superior product.

Everyone touts the iPhone as being better than everything else but at the same time an iphone doesn't do half of the things a comparably priced android does.

Yes the battery life is better but that's because it's not analyzing my usage patterns and anticipating my every want and need the way an android device does.

I can't ever say hey siri take me to work and have the device actually navigate me to my work accurately while also recommending accurate detours to avoid traffic and stop for my caffeine fix.

I've literally never even manually entered an address into my phone because the voice recognition and machine learning algorithms are that good.

Basically Google is now Apple on the software side of things and unfortunately no one has fulfilled their role on the hardware side of things...

It's pretty fucking stupid to put paragraphs in templates meant for a single name or title

redldr1 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 18:56:28 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Came for the titties, stayed for the text wrap gore

Sahnge ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 23:51:30 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Maybe your movie titles are too long.

rockercaster ยท -8 points ยท Posted at 18:30:30 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Why the fuck would you write a paragraph in that expanding text? Of course itโ€™s going to not work as expected. Itโ€™s called a โ€œtitleโ€ for a reason. Itโ€™s meant for one line with maybe one or two words.

svenskarrmatey ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 18:45:35 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

This doesn't justify the text being reflowed

SheeEttin ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 18:53:02 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It's not justified, it's centered

Yeah, it's not like a good movie has ever been made with a title long enough to need a line break. /s

[deleted] ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 22:54:39 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

So don't use imovie for that. Premiere is fucking garbage at titles and it costs slightly more than nothing.

Cormophyte ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:30:22 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Well, it has one of two choices in that situation. It can let the text scroll off screen or wrap. Both bad and in the end it's the user's fault for putting the software in a position to have to choose one.

But since it's made for baseline, completely computer illiterate people it's making the assumption that you just might not even know enough to even recognize that your text pushing past title safe is a problem. Let alone what's causing it or how to fix it.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ danman_d ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 19:31:55 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Or it could wrap the text at the beginning of the animation based on how much space will be available at the end of the animation. This is the sane choice. Blaming it on the user because "how dare they want multi-line title cards?!" is silly IMHO.

Cormophyte ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:25:10 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

So what happens if the card has enough text that it's tiny when it's starts and the ends are cut off by the time it's enlarged? I guess you could have a character limit but then you have to factor in the details of the typeface and now changing the size of the font can force you to edit out a portion of the title's characters.

That's not so bad if you have some idea of what you're doing but the problem is that design decisions about iMovie were probably made with the computer illiterates who has no idea what they're doing in mind. The uncle who wants to throw some things together and have it play back on his iMac when his nephew comes over is who they wrote it for. That person clicks buttons without reading them or remembering that they did it, which is why programs like iMovie are short on options. So Uncle Dave can fumble for an hour, click the play button, and have his text legible the first time because you know it didn't occur to him to check his work.

I mean, we're talking about a demographic that generally knows so little about what they're doing that they couldn't even do file management without a good amount of hand holding.

I'm not arguing that this is a great solution, just that all the solutions I've seen here will either give you as bad a graphical result (arguably) or will confuse who the software was written for in the first place.

Dlgredael ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:13:11 on August 10, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Text expanding off screen isn't even necessarily a problem, but readjusting constantly is never good.

paraffin ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:39:45 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The problem is that the reflow is far more visually disruptive and should never ever happen for any reason, whereas small text may just be mildly uncomfortable in rare edge cases. No reason you need to push text off screen either, there are plenty of knobs to tweak (expansion rate and min/max element size, for example)

But, logic for reflow in expand animations simply shouldn't exist. It is always very visually distracting.

"Expand" isn't for your wall of text, dumbass. Anyone who animates a wall of text that is meant to be read should have their mouse hand removed.

Don't animate the title then, dumbfuck. Design is about making appropriate choices to communicate effectively, not just slapping effects on things and expecting it to work.

Uhmm the Galaxy s8 has a 1440p resolution, not 4K. And it's not even used by default, it's 1080p and you have to change it in the settings. Also, iPhones are usually amazing in performance, it usually takes Samsung not one but TWO generations of phones to catch on (this "record" has been like this since the iPhone 5s, you can check it by yourself). By the way, I'm an Android user, but Jesus, some Android fans are quite annoying.

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:44:37 on August 11, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The point is more flexibility in post. There is no reason to deliver iPhone footage in 4K, there's barely any reason to do it for anything. We shoot everything 4K, and have never once delivered at over 1080. As for the screen, there's no pint in that high if a resolution in that small of a size, you'd certainly never tell the difference in a video, and it would be a huge drain on the battery and processor.
