Hi, Reddit! If you've seen a silly blue-and-white comic strip posted around here, there's a good chance that I'm the man to blame for it. I do the webcomic Brawl in the Family (currently in the process of wrapping up this week) and am working on the upcoming musical PC/Mac/Wii U action game, Tadpole Treble. Got a question about those two things or just Nintendo in general? I'll do my best to answer you!
The proof is on the main site, at the bottom of the blog post.
EDIT: I'll be back to answer more questions tomorrow--I gotta get in some extra work on comic 600 before bedtime. I'll do my best to answer everyone though!

Will we ever see a Kickstarter for one last production of the beloved DeDeDolls(maybe even in the Blue/White style)?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 136 points ยท Posted at 00:14:34 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)*
Man, those Dededolls! Once they ran out, it seemed everyone wanted one!
The price isn't even really the issue so much as the number of them, since I have to order a minimum of 1,000 and I feel like I can only sell 100-200 right now. Storing these chubby fellas is rough, especially over the course of a couple years, and our house already has its share of Volume Ones taking up the guest room!
A Kickstarter is an interesting idea, but at the moment I'm so swamped with other stuff that I can't really think about Dededoll production so much these days...

This is the doll in question for those of you who don't know
Depending on the price of it, I'd probably by 1 or 2
Or 10
That shit's cute

Why not make a kickstarter with only one tier: "GET A DEDEDE DOLL", and have the target equal to 1000x the cost of that tier? You could even cap it at, say, 2,000 or something to prevent delays from demand outstripping supply. That was actually the site's inspiration: designs and products that needed a minumum number of orders to be profitable.
That said, it's still a lot of work, but I'd assume it's far less work than you needed for your volume one kickstarter.

Please consider a Kickstarter for this, even if it takes a year or two! I think you underestimate the interest in such a product especially with Smash 4 on the scene.

Not that it means much in terms of the 1,000 you would need to order, I would totally buy one for myself and loads for my friends. DedeDoll is possibly the cutest thing on Earth.

I also want to back this up. It's understandable that the current Kickstarter and Tadpole Treble comes first on the priority list, but I know there are people (like me!) who seriously love the comic so much and now know that it's ending that we just need that Dededoll.
If anything, I'd say we'd be more than happy with a basic "pre-order" style Kickstarter, with the Kickstarter goal set at the cost of 1,000 Dededolls.

What was your favorite storyline that you did? Mine was Cocoon Academy.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 89 points ยท Posted at 00:23:24 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! Cocoon Academy was one of my favorites. At the moment, I'm going to stick with A Mushroom Kingdom Carol; I felt like I did exactly what I set out to do with that one, and it was a tricky task to stuff all of it into 8 comic updates, but I was really pleased with how it came out.
So far, I'm also happy with how this last arc unfolded, but I feel like that was so recent that I want to see how it holds up in my eyes over time.
Pyrle ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 02:13:02 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Matt, I've been silently watching your comic for years now, and I love where you're going with the last arc. It is an extremely fitting way to end it all; I had a huge, dumb grin on my face reading #599. The updates have been consistently heartwarming. I know that I can always think back to this comic with a smile.
I suppose this is how many feel about Calvin and Hobbes. Either way, I've enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy!) every moment, so I sincerely hope you feel the same.

SkyeKuma ยท 119 points ยท Posted at 23:29:40 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
This was... pretty unexpected, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless.
My question to you is, how did you find the motivation to make these comics for so long? I realize you did this as sort of a side project for class I believe, but what really inspired you to keep going for all these years?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 148 points ยท Posted at 23:33:11 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hm, I think a huge part of it was just the reception I was getting. A lot of people seemed to really like them, and it felt fulfilling sharing that fun with others. It was also nice to see that so many people shared both my sense of humor and love of Nintendo stuff!
Of course, the ad revenue helped as well...
SkyeKuma ยท 44 points ยท Posted at 23:35:44 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Makes sense. In the beginning your comics were very simple, something even I could do [not to insult you or anything], but I noticed your art style began to improve pretty fast. How did that transition happen?
And sorry if this was answered before on your site, I didn't discover it until a few months back when I joined this subreddit and fell in love with it pretty quickly. A bit sad that it'll be ending soon, but I'm glad you have other works I can look out for.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 58 points ยท Posted at 00:17:11 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
There were a couple things--I was actually a better artist than the original comics would imply, but I was drawing them very quickly just to post them in a single thread on the IGN boards in 2008. Once people liked them, I stuck with the simple style, but as the comic's scope grew, I started aiming for a happier medium of simple/recognizable and solid linework and shading.
Another big part of it was upgrading to a Cintiq tablet after a couple years, and then getting a newer computer later (that could run the tablet's software better, leading to less angular lines).
Cool to hear from a newer fan!

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 103 points ยท Posted at 00:07:31 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hah, that'd be a kick. Since most of the characters in BitF are fairly faithful to their in-game counterparts (I'd like to think), I'd be very curious to see BitF Waluigi make an official appearance! I also think Eario has potential; he could star in a janitorial sim where you clean up the Mushroom Kingdom after its been "adventured" through by Mario.
An "I'm not really Jigglypuff" alt costume for Jiggs would be incredible though.
Embuh ยท 43 points ยท Posted at 00:52:20 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Actually, I remember seeing a Brawl hack where Waluigi was added in as a completely new character, and one of his attacks had him scream "WAA!" I know it's not exactly the same, but I always saw that as characteristic of your interpretation of Waluigi.

Matthew, if this is really you, I want to thank you so much. I picked up your comic sometime in 2008, shortly after the "...Daddy?" comic after seeing a bunch of your comics on another forum. I showed it to my sister and my elementary school going brother and they loved it. Throughout the years while I was in high school, my brother would come into my room every morning to see the new brawl in the family. We all enjoyed it for the six years it was up and will cherish the comic and the memories we have reading it. Thank you for such a wonderfully entertaining time.

Hey Matthew! Really glad you're doing this AMA.
As someone who tried and failed to make a smash bros webcomic, once you came up with an idea for a strip, did you ever find yourself questioning if it was funny enough or if enough people would understand the joke? When you did have doubts about a comic's reception, what process did you go through to confirm or deny that it was worth publishing to your website?
[deleted] ยท 49 points ยท Posted at 00:00:39 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 84 points ยท Posted at 00:20:34 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
First off, I wouldn't recommend giving up on your comic! You've got some good ideas there for sure, and there's plenty of time for the art to evolve (as I can attest to myself).
The strip-making process can be a vicious cycle of second-guessing and freaking yourself out, believe me. I find it's handy to have a second or third person to bounce the comic off of before it goes live. And not just for the punchline-testing either, but also simply to see if certain panels "read" correctly.
For instance, you might know that character A is to the left of character B in location Y, but if your comic doesn't show that clearly enough, it can be confusing to a reader coming in blind, and that confusion can obviously hurt the enjoyment of it. In my experience, it can be easy to overlook framing issues like this, so I definitely recommend getting a second opinion for clarity when you can.
But yeah, don't give up if it's something you enjoy!

DJWizardCop ยท 40 points ยท Posted at 00:16:33 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks, I'm glad you two liked it. If I'm honest with myself though, I think the positive response is part of the reason I stopped. I wanted more positive responses, but couldn't think of ideas I thought were "good enough" to get them. Looking back, this reasoning is pretty silly. If I'm making a comic, it should be because I enjoy making the comic, not necessarily because I enjoy the responses.
Your comments have encouraged me, I'm going to give it another shot. I'll make sure to build up a buffer this time though!

If the responses have been a little too positive, would it help if we were harsher about the art at the same time we praised the jokes? Actually, you could argue that the messiness of the art is a representation of P:M's "jankiness" for the time being!
(And the other day I tried drawing a copy of a picture of Psyduck and it ended up looking like the BitF Waluigi version of it - yours isn't so bad!)
DJWizardCop ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:50:08 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The trouble was finding jokes actually, haha.
I consider myself a reasonably competent artist, I placed in the top 2% in graphics (29th out of 1493 entrants) during the most recent Ludum Dare. If the comic's art hasn't been up to par, it's because of laziness on my part and it's definitely something I'll address.
I've begun restructuring the comic into something I'm capable of making consistently and would absolutely appreciate any and all constructive criticism once I get it going again.
SouthwestSideStory ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:20:51 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
No, there's really no problem with the art, I was just being silly about how to stop the responses being too positive! :)

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 95 points ยท Posted at 00:51:21 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I have a little hobby of sketching up Nintendo characters in different, odd styles. Chris was visiting one day as we were trying to figure out new comic ideas (this was back in the beginning of 2009 or so) and he stumbled upon this horrible-looking Waluigi doodle in my sketchbook, and said I should just submit that drawing as the next comic.
Now, every 5th comic was in color, and I sometimes kind of dreaded doing that, so I said I could present this drawing of Waluigi, not in color, and just have him say "Expecting a color comic? TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME." That one line ended up kind of defining his whole BitF personality. We laughed it off at the time, but ended up going back to that idea once April Fool's Day rolled around.
That's pretty much how it happened in a nutshell. WAAAAA

BitF is like one of the only gaming comics people have consistently said is good. It's a rare thing for message boards to agree on something and your comic is one of them. Also I'm a big fan, don't even remember when I started reading them!

Between ad revenue and the merchandise, it makes a nice supplement to my other (part-time?) job: church pianist. BitF isn't something I could really live comfortably off of on its own, but as a secondary thing, it works pretty well.

Just a curious follow-up: are you actually religious, or is the church pianist gig mostly just a job.
I only ask because one of my gay, atheist, musically-inclined friends from high school did that. He enjoyed playing the music, even though he adamantly disagreed with portions of the church rhetoric.

Thanks for the nice message.
Tough question, though! I've absolutely been in the same struggle as you, during college and shortly after. If you're the creative type, the great thing about this era is that you can really create anything and put it up for the world to see. If you find something like that that you're passionate about, you just might captivate an audience over time.
I would also suggest thinking of the things you like to do already, and considering if there's a way to make a career from that (whether it's by playing an instrument, programming a game, designing stories). Pinpoint that, and work on it aggressively--nobody's great overnight, but the best works out there are all made from people that put in a lot of work. That's a little vague, but I hope it helps. Don't get discouraged!
And yes--that was definitely intentional. :) In fact, I even brought over Comic 001 in a separate layer so I could replicate the wobbly look of the font.

What do you think of the competitive Super Smash Bros. community?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 81 points ยท Posted at 23:36:32 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'm not quite part of it, but I get it. There's always a sense of satisfaction at honing a skill, and I'm sure the fame and fortune that comes with being the best of the best is a tempting goal to strive for. I'm not at that level in SSB, but I do like to speed run older games on occasion, so I've felt that strong pull of challenging gameplay.
That said, I also think there's a lot more to the world of Smash than Melee! Different doesn't always mean bad, and I'm hoping the new SSB games can be embraced by the competitive community for their own merits and differences.
[deleted] ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 23:43:29 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I agree, Melee isn't the only Smash game and shouldn't be acted as such. I love to play all of the games, and play Melee & Project M competitively and Smash 64 & Brawl casually. With that said, I'm aiming to play Smash 4 competitively, and I hope people welcome it with open arms instead of ridiculing it simply because it's not Melee.
Thanks for answering!

NPPraxis ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 16:34:29 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
While I definitely play competitive Brawl and Project M, I just want to play devil's advocate and share with you the Melee player's viewpoint:
I think you overlook that Melee is actually a much better designed competitive game. These kinds of perspectives ("different doesn't always mean bad") usually assume that Melee players are just afraid of change, when the reality is that the sequels (Brawl and Smash 4) are objectively worse as far as competitive game design.
Casual players tend to judge a game based on number of playable characters and stages and content, while pro players judge a game on how well the mechanics facilitate mental sparring and aggression and combos and high speed. This is the reason for the clash- the pro player is given a game that is worse on every level, and may choose not to play it, because it is not enjoyable to them. The casual views them as ungrateful because the game has more content, and that is what they judge the game on.
It's not about different as much as the game not being as good (from a competitive perspective). Melee is actually an incredibly designed fighting game.
NPPraxis ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 20:31:50 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
@ /u/BabylonNebula, since the comment seems to have been deleted:
This is a commonly repeated thing by people who don't actually understand why Melee is a better designed game from a completely objective perspective.
But you are completely incorrect, and you can't handwave it as "it's just your opinion, man". Melee is, objectively, a better designed competitive game.
You CAN objectively quantify these things, too. In the same way that no film critic on the planet would say that The Phantom Menace is a better movie than The Empire Strikes Back, narrative structure, writing, character development, acting, etc are real elements of a movie that can be done better. There are definitely grey areas that fall down to opinion, but there are also cases where one movie is very clearly, objectively, better than the other in terms of narrative structure. It doesn't mean that there aren't people who prefer The Phantom Menace- hey, it's got better action sequences. But The Empire Strikes Back is a much better written, developed, and produced film.
Similarly, I think Donkey Kong Country 2 has the best game design of the Donkey Kong Country series, but some people might prefer Donkey Kong Country 1, because of the art style and differing level design with less focus on animals. Donkey Kong Country 3 is unanimously considered the worst game.
And similarly, from any unbiased, informed viewpoint by a critic, The Dark Knight is a better movie than Catwoman.
You can say The Dark Knight is objectively better than Catwoman from a film perspective. Similarly, Melee is better than Brawl from an objective game design perspective.
So, in what way can I say Melee is better objectively?
When we discuss fighting game design, what makes a fighting game is ability to foster player interaction and support a system whereby you can read your opponent through understanding what they want to accomplish. Fostering a system that makes it a very mental game matters. Ceiling matters too- both physical and mental skill ceilings.
However, watchability matters as well to a lesser extent. If a game is not watchable because of slow pace, if the game rewards the defender too much and encourages camping, or has a lot of infinites, these are errors that can be attributed to game design.
From a game design perspective, Brawl has a lot more failings than Melee. Lower skill ceiling, more random factors (like tripping), more infinites, slower pace, less ability to convert from hits (reducing the depth of the threats you can level against your opponent, which is important in mental games- imagine Poker if you weren't allowed to put the pressure of the threat of going All In), etc.
Nearly every change from Melee to Brawl has negative design reprecussions, in terms of game speed, player interaction, and combos. (More on combos below.)
Shield stun. Reduced shield stun made it easier to punish hits on shields. This made approaching riskier.
Shield drop time. Same as above, improved defensive play.
Better rolls. Improved defensive play.
Ability to interrupt hitstun. This eliminated combos. The elimination of combos has has many negative effects: * If you cannot combo, hitting someone defensively and aggressively is equally valuable. Hitting someone with a nair out of shield is just as good as rushing them down with a nair (unlike in Melee, where defensive attacks weren't as good because they are less likely to be set up for a combo). * If you cannot combo, projectiles become more valuable, because individual hits are the end-all-be-all of punishment. In Melee, if you camp, each projectile does one hit, but if your opponent catches you, they can do five or six hits. In Brawl, each projectile does one hit, and if your opponent catches you they are going to hit you once, so why approach with a projectile? This improved defensive play. * If you cannot combo, comebacks become much less likely, and there is less payoff from big risks. Imagine Poker, if betting was capped so players could not go All In. Losing games would get dragged out, because the losing player cannot take a big risk to get back in the game or lose it all. * If you can break out of hitstun, you can do an attack and jump immediately to survive longer. This leads to VERY long survivability in Brawl.
All of these improve defensive game.
Tripping. Obvious issues.
Multiple airdodges improves defensive game.
Slow fall speed improves defensive game by preventing followups. The slowfalling characters in Melee are the hardest to combo (Samus, Luigi, Jigglypuff), and in Brawl everyone falls at those speeds.
Ledge snaps mean that players cannot overshoot the ledge, improving defensive play by removing the need for precision for recovery. This reduces player interaction, since there is no longer a guessing game of "is he going for the sweetspot or not?" as the player can sweetspot at any time rather than having to fake out his spacing to obscure whether he is aiming for the sweetspot.
Improved recoveries initially seem like "different instead of worse", but what happened is that a small number of characters- Metaknight, Pit, G&W, and a few others- have such good offstage play that the ledge is their most advantaged position. This lead to the phenomenon of "Planking"- a Metaknight player could take a 1% lead, grab the ledge, repeatedly uair and regrab with invincibility, and half the cast literally couldn't do anything about it. When the community for Brawl came up with a rule to ban planking (if you grab the ledge more than 50 times, you are DQ'd- the results screen data can prove it), Metaknight players started gliding under the stage to regrab.
Game balance. Metaknight is far better than any character in Melee relative to his cast, and Ice Climbers are absurdly good because the lack of combos makes their chaingrab way stronger (their opponent can't zero death them back). Dedede has chaingrabs on half the cast.
Running. In Melee, you could cancel a run by crouch cancelling, dash dancing, or wavedashing. In Brawl, you can't cancel a run except by jumping. This means running is a commitment in Brawl (the runner is going to dash attack or shieldgrab). So, Brawl players rarely run. This lowered game speed, as players had to walk to move safely.
Removal of L-cancelling with no corresponding reduction in aerial lag. This resulted in all characters having longer landing lag. This not only reduced game speed because of longer landing lag, it also lowered game speed by forcing people to aim for autocancel windows (usually meant people could not fastfall their aerials), and it improved defensive play by making many moves unsafe on shield that were previously safe AND it reduced followups to attacks.
Infinite combos and chain grabs. Brawl has much, much more of these. Dedede has infinites on five characters out of a grab that makes them unviable, Fox gets infinited by a half dozen characters, Wario gets infinited by 3-4 characters, etc etc. There's at least a dozen or more wall infinites in the game as well, and tons of chaingrabs that DON'T require DI chasing.
In every measurement of a good competitive game- in depth of player interaction, in game speed, in ability to make comebacks without a rubber banding mechanic, in viewability- Melee is better designed than Brawl. Every game change in Brawl served to make the game more defensive and campy, make interactions slower, and make the game less of a spectator sport, as well as less balanced.
This isn't a matter of opinion- this is game design and knowledge of the game.
Source: Five years as a competitive Brawl player.
Welcome to 2014 Brawl metagame.
It's perfectly fine to prefer Brawl to Melee! Don't get me wrong. But it's unquestionably the best designed game in the series (unless you count Project M, then you can argue).

Hey Matthew! Thanks for doing this~
I understand Adeleine being a Kirby character and many people enjoying her in Crystal Shards. (Adore the character myself and wish the Kirby series would do more with her.) But she's never been so much as mentioned in a Smash game. What inspired you to add Adeleine to a series about Brawl?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 39 points ยท Posted at 23:53:28 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I think Adeleine's involvement in BitF pretty much started with an early one-off comic where she painted something for Kirby that came to life. Around that time, I was looking for another Kirby character to add to the "main" cast (which was composed of Kirby, Dedede, and Meta Knight). Adeleine had a few things going for her--since Kirby/Dedede/Meta Knight all kind of shared these vaguely antagonistic relationships, having someone around that was on better/friendlier terms with everyone came in handy.
It was also nice to have a more "normal" type of character, since Kirby (and Diddy and Jigglypuff) barely spoke and Dedede was typically pushing people away. Adeleine's earnestness helped bring the characters together in a way.

Thanks for the kind words! Tadpole Treble came to me a long time ago, when my dad showed me one of his compositions in Finale. The way the music staff scrolled to the right as the song played reminded me of platformers, and it got me thinking about a game that uses the music notes as objects and obstacles in gameplay.
Yeah, those shipping costs are rough--I felt a little guilty having to ask for so much, but that's how much it costs to send out stuff overseas here in the USA. It's cool though--there'll always be the cheaper PDF option, or simply the site itself!

I'm glad that fans enjoyed Waluigi enough to escalate him to some sort of memetic mutation, although I do get a little worried that others would get tired of it (that's the downside of any meme, really). As such, I've tried to not "overdo" Waluigi in the comic itself, mainly having him appear pretty sporadically and using unique punchlines when he shows up.

And finally, how much will the final song break our hearts? ;~;
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 47 points ยท Posted at 23:41:25 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, I liked how you had this little band of adventurers in Kirby 64--Kirby, Dedede, Adeleine, Waddle Dee and Ribbon. The only one of those who never really got a spot on the BitF roster was Ribbon, mainly since I couldn't really figure out what sort of niche she would fill (and a one-off with her might be a little too obscure, depending on the idea).
The guy who helped build the site, Chris, actually worked part-time at a game company for awhile, and was able to get me into E3 before BitF hit it big.
The final song! Hmm...it'll probably be kinda sad, but I like to think of it as more of a staff roll/credits sort of thing than a story-related finale.
Sakuramei ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:44:55 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Yeees. I'd love to see some of the Kirby 64 cast make a comeback--but for various reasons I know that will never happen which is why it was so nice to see them in your comic! Even if Ribbon never did make it--she's actually my favorite :P But yeah, I understand it. I actually didn't even realize her name was Ribbon until years later despite her being my favorite character. Regardless, I always felt she and Adeleine were great.
Ooo! I see :) That's awesome.

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 00:09:50 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hiya, thanks for the love!
I remember seeing a couple former-fans of BitF swear off the comic after that strip, heh.
I like what I played of Project M. It's an impressive feat and it's cool to see Mewtwo throwing down with Ivysaur (as God intended). That said, I'm actually a big fan of Brawl and Melee, so the gameplay/engine tweaks of PM weren't really much of a draw for me, personally. Lucas's charging move was a nifty new ability though.

Is there any playable character in the smash universe that you haven't played an original game featuring them? If so, did it affect how you included them in the comic?
Also coming from a long time fan, you're awesome dude.

Thank you so much!
Hmm, interesting question. As of right now, I think I've played every series featured in Smash Bros, although I haven't played the game's Marth, Ike, and Roy hail from. In fact, I hadn't played Fire Emblem before Awakening (which I ended up loving, go figure), so FE comics were few and far between before 2013.

I'd recommend finding a copy of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for DS. It's a re-release of The original. I would also recommend playing FE: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn (Ike's games).
Minus151 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:25:05 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
As someone who loved FE7,8 , Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn, (and is picking up Awakening the second Iget a 3DS) I would actually advise AGAINST getting shadow dragon. It was by far the most disappointing localized Fire Emblem game to me. It was nice to see the game Marth hails from, but other than that it fell far short of the other games In the series, in my opinion. FE1 is dated and it shows.

Holy crap, this AMA is actually happening!
First of, thank you for sharing your talent and humor with us over the years. BitF is my favorite webcomic, I've been following since 250 and I'm deeply sad to see it end.
But on to the actual questions:
What's your favorite Zelda game? I've only ever played Twilight Princess but I really want to get into the series.
What do you predict your future career as a webcomic artist will look like? Or are you going to fully focus on developing games? I'd love to see you make a name for yourself, and plan on supporting Tadpole Treble and all your future projects.
Finally, I wanna know who you'd like to see on the Smash Bros roster. I'd like to see Bandana Dee, and since you're a Kirby fan I was wondering if he was on your wish list as well?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 00:37:10 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks for the nice message!
My favorite Zelda game is perhaps not the best entry point: the very first one, The Legend of Zelda. I love its sense of exploration and how there are so many different ways to approach it. But if you're just getting into the series, I'd recommend A Link Between Worlds as a good entry point. It's got terrific (yet enjoyably straightforward) gameplay, some really strong characters, and it's not especially long or daunting.
While I loved doing comics, game design has sort of always been my passion, so I'd love to keep making games. That's not to say I'll never do a comic again, but it's not in the cards at the moment.
I think Bandana Dee would be a solid addition to the list--he does seem like a good choice for a fourth player (especially after Return to Dreamland and the Spear ability). I'm one of those crazy Ridley fans myself, though. One of these days, he'll squeeze his janky, lanky self into Smash...
Hjhawley7 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:46:10 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Totally agree with Ridley! If anyone can figure out how to make him work, it's Sakurai. We can only hope.
On the topic of Zelda, I actually am pretty intrigued by the original LoZ because I'm a fan of the more open-ended gameplay, but as soon as I get a 3DS (better late than never, right?) I'm getting Link Between Worlds along with Smash 4, Pokรฉmon Y and Kid Icarus Uprising.
Thanks for the responses!

First off, I want to say thank you. I loved the comic, and I love the fact that you portrayed my favorite Nintendo character(Daisy) in a good way, as opposed to the backlash she typically gets.
My question: Did you ever have any ideas for a Xenoblade comic that didn't quite make it? I was always secretly hoping you'd do one.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:23:29 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I've always liked Daisy! She had some of the best taunts in Toadstool Tour. "Seriously, are you aiming THERE!?"
I kind of regret not making a Xenoblade comic now; if I had guessed Shulk would be in Smash, I would've definitely attempted one. Alas, I can't really come up with an idea off the top of my head now...! I did enjoy that game quite a bit though. Gotta get around to finishing it someday.

Hey Matthew! Super generic question, which is your absolute favourite comic you've made during your time with BITF? In extension, your favourite BITF character?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 44 points ยท Posted at 00:04:43 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hi! I tend to gravitate towards the bigger and more ambitious comics, myself, so I'm going to have to say 400-The History of Nintendo. I was working on it on and off during a time where I was super-sick (bedridden with Crohn's Disease for about 2 months) and finally getting it finished once I started to recover was like overcoming the biggest hurdle of my life. And I was really happy with how it came out.
Favorite BitF character has gotta be King Dedede. He's always so much fun to draw and write. I think a lot of writers like their grouchier, id-type characters since you have more freedom with the dialogue.

Setsuna-F-Seiei ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:31:50 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
False. All you have is numbers and a character that's top tier.
We have as a group have a cooler name.
Our character has big muscles, a catchy chant, understandable and quotable taunts and victory lines, a cooler sword, and a clearly defined gender.
McMilla1228 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:57:34 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Marth's most recent design is definitely more masculine this time around. Who needs muscles when you have royalty? You may fight for your friends but Marth fights for his sister and country. Lastly, Marth'll run circles around Ike before he could swing once.
Setsuna-F-Seiei ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:11:29 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
More masculine, but the "Marth is a girl" joke is still there. Ike was a noble once, but he wasn't really feeling it. Ike also fights for his sister and country, so that point is pretty mute. Lastly, Marth can only run circles around Ike in Smash (which I already acknowledged). Ike is not even close to slow in his actual games, and is stat-wise one of the best Lords in the series, second only to Sigurd.
henryuuk ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:41:02 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

My question is simply what is (or rather, what were) your most wanted newcomers?
Also, where can we expect to see you after BitF?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 00:02:33 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Nice question. Prior to any newcomer reveals, my most-wanted was Mega Man, Ridley, Palutena, another EarthBound rep (probably Pokey), Little Mac or King Hippo, and...let's say Impa. Hard to remember that far back now. So it was nice to see that some of my picks got chosen. One of the nice things about this new set of newcomers is that there're characters that I'm really excited for that I didn't know I wanted (like a couple of the hidden characters, and Wii Fit Trainer).
After BitF, I'll be hanging around the bitfinitygames.com site, making video games! I'll be giving a good "where to find me" set of links underneath Friday's update too.

Matthew, I want to personally thank you for all the amazing years of BitF. I can't think of a single strip that hasn't been funny, and they're always able to cheer me up when I'm in a dark place. Yesterday's comic in particular was exceptionally heartwarming, I'll admit that it even made me cry. So thank you, I feel like I owe so much to you for your amazing work, and good luck in your future endeavors! I'll definitely be picking up Tadpole Treble when it comes out!
But anyway, here's my question. Do you have a favorite robot master from the Mega Man series and/or which one is your favorite to draw?

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 00:43:46 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Good question! The first one that always comes to mind for me is http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com/2010/02/26/220-gyroid/, which I thought was pretty tame (personally), but a relatively large amount of people were grossed out by it.
In general, though, I'm prepared for strips that I think will be polarizing. Like, really off-the-wall concepts such as Waluigi or Tails's spinning butt. And sometimes I second-guess myself with a punchline, post the original as well, and the majority prefers the original.

Okay! Two questions:
I'd honestly love to know why Kirby is the main character of BitF. I really love it, haha.
Also, I couldn't really find out, but how much would it cost to buy all three BitF books?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 00:00:12 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Kirby happened to be in the first few comics solely because I think he's funny. He's funny-lookin', funny-soundin', probably funny-smellin'. Once he starred in the first few, I decided to just stick with the guy. He's served me well over the years, I think.
All three books? I think getting them all in paperback is $80 through the Kickstarter. Free shipping if you're in the US!

Advance Wars is actually one of my most interesting series discoveries as I found it through a fan game series inspired by it, the Battalion Wars flash games. I liked the gameplay from that but I finished it wanting more. Did a little digging, and found out that the series was actually inspired by Advance Wars. Hi! I love hearing that people have been inspired to start their own webcomics--best of luck!
-As for advice, I've said it in a couple other places here, but I'd recommend bouncing your near-finished work off a friend or two before it goes live. They can let you know if something should be clarified, or if something doesn't read correctly, etc.
I think people are generally less picky about art than it might seem at first. Like video games, if something looks simple but still clean and clear, it can still be very enjoyable to read. I'd recommend finding a style that works for you--something fun and distinct, but not difficult for you to do--and sticking with it. It'll refine itself a bit over time too as you get more comfortable with it.
-My favorite gaming soundtracks include Final Fantasy 3(6), The Wind Waker, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, EarthBound, and Mother 3. A few of my favorite songs are Terra's Theme, Credits (Wind Waker), the main themes from Mario and Zelda, Buoy Base Galaxy, Smiles & Tears, and Dancing mad.
-All my life! My dad is a band teacher, professional pianist and composer, so he taught me most of the things I know about music.
-Sure! We actually met online while both working on a fan-made Phoenix Wright Musical, writing songs together and such. We agreed to meet up with a bunch of the people involved at Sarah's house in Colorado, and that's when we started falling in love. She ended up moving down here eventually. It's crazy to think that we met because of a video game...
-Mega Man, always and forever.

I was pretty excited you were able to draw Shulk before it was over. Thank you for making Brawl in the Family. It was a comic I was able to enjoy with my family and quote to friends making me seem funnier than I really am.
As for a question, you are a big Nintendo fan (as everyone should be). Do you have any non-Nintendo favorites (games, characters, or otherwise)?
[deleted] ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 23:30:32 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Will we ever see that pg-13 strip about Mario and the Thwomp that you mentioned?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 23:38:12 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Probably! There're about five or six "Brawl Out of the Family" comics that I've thought up and rejected due to them being a little...bluer than the strips usual fare. Granted, I'm already a bit of a timid, Flanders-esque kinda guy, so these ideas aren't like grotesque or anything, but I'd feel weird putting them on the main site.
That said, I do want to sketch them up and post them on the forums sometime in the next few weeks, so stand by!
ficklepickledidly ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 00:14:05 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Speaking of: Will the Lost Comics section in the new books feature only comics that were about finished or will you include things like rough sketches or outlines? The murder mystery idea you mentioned in the podcast sounded interesting, but also like it wasn't more than just an idea. Also, will the Dream Land comic you mentioned here be included in said section?
ChongoNG ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:07:40 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
First of all, just mentioning that, like everyone else here, I am a huge fan of your comic, and I hope that whatever lies ahead for you is nothing but goodness, because you left behind an equal legacy of goodness.
For my question: If you could design a Trailer for a new character for Sm4sh (any character you like, confirmed or deconfirmed), who would it be for and what would the trailer look like?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 01:04:35 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hi ChongoNG, thanks for the nice message.
Tough question. Sakurai's put a lot of work into those trailers.
Off the top of my head, I'd like a heroes vs. villains thing. Let's say Mario, Link, Samus, and Pikachu are all pursuing Bowser through a rocky canyon-type area at dusk. Bowser reaches the lava moat in front of his castle, turns around and roars. Camera zooms out to show the situation--King Koopa's clearly outnumbered here, and our hero side starts slowly advancing.
But what's this? A close-up of horse hooves? It's Ganondorf, to the rescue! He leaps off his giant steed and lands next to Bowser, smirks, and shows his the back of his palm (with the Triforce, of course). A flash of light later, and we see the familiar, imposing figure of a boar, who unsheathes an enormous trident...
Ganon teleports in!
Link winces, but Pikachu's not afraid. As he charges his impossibly-huge foe, a Shadow Ball blasts the Pokemon backward.
Mewtwo teleports in too!
Suddenly, the numbers don't look so hot, but Samus is still ready to take on all challengers. She charges up her arm cannon, but gets distracted by a large shadow looming overhead...
Ridley crashes the party!
And then it goes into these guys doing a bunch of cool in-game moves, closing with CGI of all eight characters diving towards each other in combat.

Being bedridden was the first one that came to mind (the comic almost ended with number 400, in fact). There've been a few times when I've been involved in arguments on my own forums about certain strips or story arcs where it really got me stressed out (to the point of losing sleep) and I'd seriously wonder if anyone was even enjoying what I was doing anymore.
Ultimately, fan support is what always carries me through these toughest times, but I know that's not really the ideal solution for everyone without a webcomic.
It does get tricky to maintain motivation in other projects when you don't have an audience already awaiting your work; I can certainly relate there (all those hours on Tadpole Treble before we made it public, for instance). What really helps me is making a list of micromanagement for how your day will unfurl--like, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, work on this, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM work on this, break for an hour or so, etc. Having a specific task to tackle throughout the day (and it's good if you can switch up the tasks too so you don't burn out) helps keep one focused and less likely to get distracted by the internet or whatever. Best of luck!

Sorry, classic question-dodging there. Although I see Dedede and Adeleine having more of a big-brother/younger-sister relationship than anything.
Sup3rn00b ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:11:42 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Honestly I thought your main would have been one of the kirby characters.
I hadn't gotten into your comic until a little while back, but already I'm sad to see it go. Which story arc was the most fun for you to think up / draw?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 20:16:38 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The more ambitious ones (Mushroom Kingdom Carol, Cocoon Academy, the finale) have all required a lot of pre-planning and foresight to handle. While it was a lot of work, I think Cocoon Academy felt pretty liberating at the time, since I was able to work with this whole new environment, different character relationships, and a handful of mysteries that most people didn't really predict.
I also had fun with Divide By Hero for kind of the opposite reason, it was just a breezy, fun story that gave the villains a chance to shine.
[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:27:34 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Probably not, it wasn't drawn up or anything. There are a ridiculous number of discarded ideas in the BitF backlog, in fact--I could probably make a wholly separate 600 additional (though not great) comics with them!

Why did you decide to go for the blue color to your comics?
Also, how did you come up with the idea for the fish from Wind Waker to narrate some of the issues?
Sad to see BitF end, I've been reading since number 200, but we all gotta move on.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 01:11:13 on October 2, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The very first strips were done in blue because I felt black-and-white looked a little too sterile (like I didn't want to use any color at all). The blue let me have a splash of color while still not having to actually color them. It also made the strips all share something in common, which I thought was neat. It was easy to tell a Brawl in the Family comic because of that blue color.
As for the fish, he was always a fun character to me. I really liked his personality, but I can't really remember why I decided to have him narrate the mouseover text for the Comic Reviews. I think for the first one, it was a Wind Waker review, so I just wanted a way to squeeze his chattery self in. After that, it became tradition.
Bombkirby ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:48:20 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
What would you think if someone made a spiritual successor to your comic? Or a sequel? Etc. I've heard some people mention it but I think you should get to make the call for that stuff.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:08:43 on October 2, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'd love to see further Nintendo-based comics, but I'd feel kinda funny if someone titled it "Brawl 4 the Family" or something similar. I wouldn't want readers to get the implication that I'm doing more comics. So while more Nintendo comics would be great, I'd prefer if future ones found their own voice and name.
ElfieStar ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:51:48 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Hi, and thank you. The Monk fan in me really likes ending on a nice, clean number with a nice, definitive ending, so I don't really have plans to continue BitF with additional comic strips. Of course, I am still doing one comic per issue of NF, so there'll still be some Nintendo strips from me!

Hi Matt!
Big fan here. Followed BitF since the IGN Board days! I posted in your original thread! (I even wrote you fan mail like three years ago and you drew me an original sketch! Still have it, and love it!)
Proof!
Anyway, it's a pleasant surprise you're doing an AMA! Sad the comic is ending though. Gonna miss it! It had a phenomenal run. Good thing it's ending on such a high note, and I am looking forward to Tadpole Treble!
So my question; With the comic's (feel-enduing) ending eminent, do you have any big comic ideas/plots you didn't get to do for one reason or another? Like any 'big' story arcs like Cocoon Academy or A Mushroom Kingdom Carol? Or did you get to do pretty much all you wanted?
Oh, and I'm totally going to hop on to the "DeDeDoll Kickstarter" Bandwagon. I never bought one myself (they went out of stock before I could get my chance and the funds together) and I'd love to get one myself!

Heya, Matthew! Thanks for six+ years of the comic. I started reading when you posted the early comics on GameFAQs so I feel like I've been following your journey from the very start.
Anyway, my question is: any Mii Fighters you're thinking of making for the new game? And which of the three styles is your favorite?

Content-wise, none really come to mind immediately. That said, there are hundreds of panels that I wish were drawn better...! Even near the end where the comic's art was at its best, there're still tons of poses, expressions, proportional things, and backgrounds that I just look back on and kinda cringe.

Hey Matthew, love you comic, one of my favorites! My question is, what's your opinion on Rosalina joining Smash? And as an adjacent, why didn't she appear much in BitF (only as a Xmas ghost once)?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 20:32:30 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Rosalina actually got a comic of her own in NF Magazine! After I did that, I didn't really think about her specifically getting a BitF comic, but I'm glad she got a few places to show up anyway.
I like Rosalina; I think she's one of the better "newer" Mario characters. Of course, it certainly helps that she was the face of (IMO) two of the best Mario games ever--Galaxy 1 and 2! I think her attachment to those games got her a lot of fans from the get-go, so I'd say she's worthy of being a Smash character. Pretty creative moveset, I might add.

In terms of Nintendo systems in general, Terra's Theme from FF3(6).
In terms of Nintendo-published games, EarthBound definitely has some fantastic ones (I'm a huge fan of Smiles and Tears). My big favorite, though, would have to be the Credits Theme from The Wind Waker. You can play that song while reading anything slightly heartfelt and it really boosts the experience. Heck, play it while reading the end of BitF!
TheDaftAlex ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:23:51 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
You are ending the webcomic because ideas are scarce. Do you think you'll do the occasional comic strip whenever a good idea hatches? I recall 2P Start did something similar.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:35:00 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I've considered that, but I think I really like having BitF proper be a solid 600 comics...anal as it might sound, having 603 or whatever comics would drive me kinda crazy; I like the definitive end. But I will continue to do Nintendo comics in NF Magazine!

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:50:45 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Waluigi is a cool guy, but I think he needs his own game before he can prove himself in the ring! Now, I'd be more than happy to help make that happen if Nintendo needs some ideas...
Heck, the Wario & Waluigi BitF strip would be a terrific game to play, I think. Just those two running around Nintendo universes messing things up.

Hey Matthew! Long time fan here!
What was your inspiration to start doing musical comics? Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough, but I don't think I've ever seen something like that before.
This isn't a question, but I also just want to thank you for writing one of the few extremely charming and (mostly) innocent web comics out there. It lets the whole family enjoy it!

Haha, nice link.
The musical comic was a little bit of a happy accident; the Grinch story arc was a good fit for Dedede, but halfway through, I decided I really wanted to have that song in there somehow. I was already a composer of sorts and my dad had a handy little home studio, so it seemed like a good approach to take it. I still remember being very nervous about what people would think of this "mixed media" approach, but I've since done plenty more, so I'm glad folks liked it.

I've mentioned earlier that The History of Nintendo was my favorite, but I'll ignore the songs for now and go with The Captive Princess. That strip arose out of me wanting to give Peach her own heroic moment (largely based off the clever version of Peach from the Paper Mario games) and it ended up becoming quite the undertaking. I was really happy with the ending of it, too, it kinda put her relationship with Mario in perspective a bit.

Hi, opossum! I'm sleepy, but otherwise happy (maybe a little bashful). Doing these last strips has been cathartic, like saying goodbye to a 6+ year ritual. It felt a little strange signing that URL at the bottom of comic 599 for the last time...

I liked doing those, they were kind of the first running gag of the series. I actually tried to come up with many more of them, but there were so many that felt just a little too similar to earlier ideas I'd already done. When I thought of a new way to approach it, though, that became a comic, such as in 328, 459, and 592.

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:42:55 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Oh yeahhhhhh...I think Chris was actually going to handle another "finale" type comic (like Happy Birthday, Waluigi was the previous year) that we were going to upload soon after. Like Happy Birthday, Waluigi, it'd be different in tone and art from all the others. I don't remember the specifics, but it involved Luigi finally getting fed up with Waluigi and delivering a swift punch to the jaw. Kinda dramatic, not really played for laughs. I have no idea what people would've thought of that.

Hello! Big fan of your work. My question to you would be,
WHY DON'T YOU HAVE A NESS FLAIR??
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:43:19 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Apparently I don't know enough about Reddit!

If you scroll to the top of the page you're on now, to the left below the yellow Submit a Text Post button, it displays your name an then (edit).
If you select that you can choose a flair out of each character in each iteration of Smash. You gotta represent man!

Hey Matt! Thanks for the awesome webcomic, I have been following it for so many years, its the first thing I put up on my browser every day to check for updates, seeing it go is really sad, but it had to happen :(
But I digress, my question is, after the comic ends, will you still think about posting updates every once in a blue moon on the website.
Thank you sooo much.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:44:03 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I might post updates (particularly if we keep up the Podcast) but it won't be in comic form. I can probably clarify this with Friday's update.

Hi Matthew, I'm going to ask a really basic question here: Who is your favorite newcomer for Smash 4?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:44:49 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Mega Man <3
Mzmonyne ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:34:01 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hey Matt! I've been a fan of BitF for a long time running, and it's melancholy to see it go. I have two simple questions for you:
Will the website stay up, and, if not, where will us fans be able to find issues of the comic online?
What was your favorite idea for a comic that you didn't end up using?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 20:49:20 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The website will stay up, at least for a good while! I have no plans of taking it down.
My favorite unused comic idea was a Halloween "creepypasta" thing. The concept was that, with some tricky programming in the site code, people would be treated to one of 20 or so (randomly-chosen) comics on the site for Halloween. Thing is, each of these comics would be identical to a past comic in the archive, but made more "spooky." Like, re-enacted with skeletons, or a character would suddenly look possessed or spout demonic gibberish, etc. It would be weird and disconcerting to the viewer, and the blog post below would simply be oblivious to it, like,
"Hey guys, I hope this isn't too cutesy for a Halloween comic, but I thought it was kind of a fun joke. Kirby's costume was fun to design."
And ideally, people would be talking about which weird comic they got on the forums, like "I got this strange one that's like the Face-Off comic, except Dedede doesn't have any eyeballs!? What's going on?"
Anyway, it would've probably been a nightmare to program in, but I always thought that sounded like a fun, spooky prank.
Mzmonyne ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:57:35 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Wow, that certainly would have been disconcerting to open the BitF homepage and the Halloween comic features Jigglypuff looking like this.
CondenserCoil ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:37:38 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hi, Matt! I'm a big fan of your work!
Anyway, what's a newcomer character you'd want in Smash Bros. that has probably zero chance of actually getting in?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:51:34 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I think Pokey (from EarthBound) in his Spider Mech would make a great character, but I'm getting pretty skeptical about additional Mother content at this point, unfortunately.
ficklepickledidly ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:38:17 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Are there any characters you wish you'd made more comics with? Or any ones that you wanted to use more but couldn't think of a lot of opportunities?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:52:26 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Shulk! And the EarthBound cast, actually; EarthBound is already a funny, self-depreciating game so it's a lot tougher to write jokes about it.
AceAssistant ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:39:11 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hey, Matthew! It's been a good run for BitF, I must say. Anyway, here's my question: How hard is it to think up funny and engaging scenarios for characters to be in? I.E how do you keep comic arcs from becoming stale? It's something I've been genuinely interested in how you handle.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:57:47 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
You quit the comic, that's how! :p
Honestly though, arcs are tricky to handle, especially if you're trying to end each part with a joke. As a rule of thumb, I try not to make the storylines TOO long, and for longer arcs (like Mushroom Kingdom Carol) I try to cram a lot of panels and a lot of information into each part, so that it feels dense and remains engaging (hopefully).
I'll often start with deciding exactly what will be explored in each chapter of the story, so that each one has a defined purpose as it goes up--I think that helps a lot in keeping things moving with the storyline.
As for engaging scenarios for the characters, a lot of the time, I'll just try to think of characters that haven't interacted much and figure out what they'd say to each other. Divide By Hero is a good example of this--it makes sense that Ganondorf and Bowser would both be frustrated and try something like this.

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:00:33 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's an interesting question. I do have a couple of ideas for cartoons (had them since I was a teenager, in fact), but animated stories are somewhat intimidating to me in general. It's one of those things that I'd have no idea where to begin, but I'm pretty sure I'd be happy doing it!

I just want to say, as a fan since near the comic's beginning, I just have to say thank you for being so awesome. I've even started doodling my own webcomic because of you. But let's get to the main point of an ama, what character did you want to make a comic of but never did?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:02:40 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! It's always nice to hear that someone's drawing more because of BitF.
Besides a few of SSB4's newcomers (like Shulk), I always wanted to do more FF3(6) comics. I love that game, but it's not quite Nintendo and it's slightly more obscure at this point.
BlogDog123 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:45:09 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I really enjoy Brawl in the Family, it's one of my favorite webcomics, and it was a big inspiration for me to start making my own little comic series. I've sketched a few already but I don't think they're really good. Are there any tips or pointers you can give me?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:06:16 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Don't give up! BitF was far from the first comic I made (I used to draw a ton of them in middle school), and everything you work on now--even if it doesn't work out--is at least a great way to hone your skills. Nobody starts off good at a skill, after all, so if you enjoy what you do, keep at it!
I also recommend bouncing your work off other people to get their opinions on it. They may have good suggestions in terms of how something can be made clearer, etc. Best of luck.

Wow, that's quite a marathon! Thanks for the compliment.
My favorite character to draw is Dedede. He's got a pretty simple design but it's a lot of fun to play with his expressions and poses, and I think he's one of the BitF characters that looks noticeably distinct from his official (Nintendo) look.

It really depends on when I made the comic. The first few each took less than half an hour each, while comics made after comic 300 or so each averaged about 3 or 4 hours. Some strips and songs can take upwards of 20 or 30 hours!

But I'm really glad that you're ending it on such a high note, rather than having a decline in quality. Sorry for asking such a stupid question, but...
From BitF #599:
I've got to be reading too much into this, because it's certainly too good to be true, but I can't help but ask... this doesn't mean there are plans to have someone else take up the torch for the comic, or even turn it into some sort of collaborative fan art community or something like that, does it? It's got to mean that we'll be the Hand in the sense that we'll be playing Smash for years to come, right?
Oh, also a second question, if you don't mind... How can you do a Kickstarter for a physical book of the comic? Won't Nintendo sue you for copyright infringement?

I know you don't plan to do a sequel to BiTF, but what about a site/blog where other people submit Smash comics? Kinda like a collaborative comic.
It'd fit nicely with the message of BiTF #599, with you stepping down and others taking your place. It'd kinda be the central "comics about Smash" website.
TurretBot ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:01:23 on October 2, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hey, I have a random alternative to making 1,000 comics: Just count the number of days until comic 1,000 would have been, and post a comic to the website when that day hits.
Totally flawless. Literally no way this could fail.

Did you ever imagine your comic getting so big and lasting as long as it did? Did it ever become overwhelming?
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 23:48:14 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
No, and yes! Part of the reason the original comics look so different is because I really did just sketch them up as fast as possible (and I was still very green at using a computer tablet). It was really just something silly I whipped up to attempt to amuse a few message boarders for the span of a single thread. I definitely had no plans early on to make it a 600 panel goliath.
And it's become surprisingly overwhelming--between staying on updates and keeping on top of emails and trying to meet everyone's expectations, webcomicry is deceptively stressful! Also, some people on the internet just HAAAATE webcomics, and I have a bad habit of letting one negative opinion speak louder than 100 positive ones...

๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:12:11 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
There's not much time left for any sort of blending! The short answer for why it's ending is simply because I'm ready to move onto other things, and it's become difficult to think up new ideas for BitF.
LeaBasili ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:44:25 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hi Matthew! It's nice to meet you. :)
Something I've always wondered about: what's the greatest part of making a webcomic? For instance, is there a difference in making content for the internet as opposed to the real world?
I think the ending (so far) is going perfectly. I'm a bit of a sap as well, so I'm glad you didn't go with your alternate ending. :) Thanks for all of your brilliance through all the years.
๐๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:04:38 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'm glad you enjoyed the ending!
The internet gives you feedback pretty much immediately after you work on something, which is neat. Of course, people are less likely to hold their tongues online, so the pressure of making something satisfying can be a little intimidating.
The best part is the fan interaction, though. It's really overwhelming to hear from so many people that enjoy what I do, and that share this love of gaming as well.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:09:21 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)*
Hello, Matthew! I am a stranger from the internet here to ask you questions. They are as follows:
Where do you see the "neglected" franchises of Nintendo going (Metroid, F-Zero, older NES stuff like Ice Climbers, Mach Rider, StarTropics, etc.)?
Before you got wrapped up in game development and other things that lead to the comic's end, did you see the comic ending at one point? If you did, how did you originally see it going down?
What inspired the comedy, art, and overall style of BitF?
Do you see yourself working on more games if Tadpole Treble goes over well?
How has working with Nintendo been? Are they helping closely, watching from a distance, or something else?
Who is your favorite newcomer (unless you have been avoiding spoilers, which... uh... would be kind of hard for your line of work)?
What were your first thoughts whenever the original Smash came out (if you were in on that one)? Melee? Brawl? This new one?
Also, let me take the time to say that your work is just absolutely amazing. If Nintendo Power was still around, I would have loved to see your comics become a part of the issues. (Yes, I look forward to your future works in NF Magazine, as I have heard of!) Every time I see Secret Santa, I can't help but laugh. It's just so great that a comic that didn't rely on cheap humor stuck around for this long, and it's a shame to see it go. But I can totally tell that your humor and style will live on in your new game(s?!). I remember when the How Dedede Stole Christmas comics were coming out, how crazy it was to have a song attached to it. And then Ode to Minions, and then on and on...
I have to admit, I did have a bit of a falling out for a while as the comic kind of fell off my radar while I was doing other things. But I began reading again a few months ago whenever I was digging through some browser bookmarks, I think.
Well, farewell you beautiful comic. That was a great conclusion, too. My Wii U looks forward to your art and music filling its processors.
Whoops, I just realized I rambled on for a bit there. Sorry!
Edit: This is just too good of an opportunity to pass up... Do you think we could play Smash online someday? I don't care when, just as long as I could face off against possibly one of the most dedicated Smash fans ever.
Edit Again: Oh, more questions! Ha. Ha.
What was collaborating with 2Pstart like?
What's your comic drawing process? Your music creating process? (Also, why did you pick the songs you did in the Mega Man medley for the Prodigal Robot? Did they just blend well?)
Sorry for the tower of text. This is like the time I sent in a letter asking for a GBA version of Smash Bros. with Sora from Kingdom Hearts in it whenever I was like, 7 or something. Except I might actually get a response this time. (I did get a letter back, but it wasn't too, uh, human-like.)
Okay, okay, I'm done! Promise!
Wait, one more!
ABSOLUTE FINAL QUESTION CUTOFF LINE
Sorry if that's a bit too jumbled.
I just went back to watch How the King Stole Christmas, and it's funny how many of those references I didn't get whenever the comic first came out. Back then I didn't lurk the internet and play games like I do now, so it's funny to see those references... the Pigmask, Sakurai, Metroid (yes, there was no Metroid in my life as a kid) stuff, and just Kirby and general, because I had never even heard of Kirby back then. All I knew was Mario, Zelda, and everything else was such a big discovery... "Whaaaat? There's games Nintendo wouldn't release in America?" I would proclaim after finding those bunch of Melee trophies...
At this point, I can't promise that I won't ramble on some more. Heh.
More Edit: sniff, I can't contain this nostalgia for the wild west that was the internet. I still love High Comedy though. If I ever work in an office or as a teacher, this is a comic I would cut out of the newspaper and magnet onto a cabinet or my desk.

Out of all the Brawl in the Family comics you've written, which one's your least favorite?
If you could have Sakurai revive one dead Nintendo franchise, which one would you have him resurrect?

Any chance of the BitF books being able to buy for us in Europe, I don't really want to play the equivelent of $130+ because of shipping to buy all those books, as awesome as they are

Matthew, you have been with me for, pretty much, all of high school. Every day I would come home to read your silly and cheery comics. You are, without a doubt, my favorite web comic artist ever. I just want to say thank you for all 600 comics over the years. We're gonna miss you, man :')
Also, since it's question time, what's your favorite Kirby game of all time and why?
Koopakirby ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:33:19 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Matthew, thank you for all the laughs over the last couple of years. It's been amazing. Your comic helped me through some tough times in my life, so I'm sad to see it go, but still happy nonetheless. As for my question, what's your favorite Kirby Copy Ability?

Hey Matt, I just want to thank you for the years of laughs and smiles you've given me over the years. I've been following BitF ever since that very first thread on the IGN SSBB board, and while it's sad to see the comic end, I wish you the best of luck in the future.
Question time: which one of Kirby's hats is your favorite?

Sooo, suppose if an idea for a BitF comic pops up in your head on its own, with no help from anyone, even long after you've ended the comic, and you're all like "Oh, this'll be an AWESOME and FUNNY idea for a BitF comi---ohhh wait, I forgot that I wrapped up that comic a while ago...gosh darn it!", what would you do about that?
I will surely miss the comic and I completely respect any decision you might do with it.

Hehehe Smash For The family is next rite? rite?
But srsly now , i been a fan for a while of bitf , i remember finding it like 3 or 4 years ago (or so) , and spending the whole afternoon reading all of your comics and catching up to the current one, good stuff!
Bitf has always been something to look forward in tuesdays and fridays for me , and it's sad to see it end , but all good things must come to an end i guess.
There is really a charm of the how the strips never felt to me like they try to hard to be funny , or rely too much on current events , which is pretty darn good for webcomic!
so basically not really a question , but just a huge thanks for entraining me (and a lot of other folks for sure) over the years , hope you do well on future projects :)
guess il might as well ask a question
is the waluigi spin off next? /s

Hi Matt, thanks for having an AMA, huge fan of your work for lots of years. My question: What's it like developing a game for the first time? Were there any hard obstacles you had to overcome while developing Tadpole Treble? And if there were, mind sharing them?

What's your next Webcomic venture? Will there be one?
TheAsianIsGamin ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:11:02 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hi, Matt!
I'm ashamed to say that I only discovered your comic a week and a half ago. I read them all in three days, but I'd loved to have been around sooner. That being said, I've loved the comic, and I'd like to thank you for all you've done for this community.
Now, I should really ask you some questions so I don't get blown off as spam. What games do you play that have not made an appearance in BiTF? Any particular reason they're not in? What do you actually think of Addie as a playable character? What character was your favorite to write for?
Also, my friend and I have attempted to undertake a lot of creative projects, ranging from a YouTube show to a novel. I've been thinking of our next big idea, and I recently drew inspiration for a webcomic from you. How would you feel about us ripping you off, say about 60%? What tips can you give, being one of the few successful webcomic artists?
Finally, I'd like to thank you again. For everything. This AMA. The comic. The laughs. I hope Tadpole Treble and all your future projects pay off. But you know there's one more question we need to ask: Does Dedede ever get Kirby?

Hey Mr. Taranto! Love your comic! You're such an inspiration to me!
Anyway, I could use a little advice. I've been making comics for a while and just recently started posting some of them (along with other art) on the /r/smashart sub (if ya wanna check them out...I can dream). I was just wondering if you could give me any advice about writing comics. Anything would be awesome! I'll really miss waking up to your comics! But like EarthBound always says, "There are many difficult times ahead, but you must always keep your sense of humor." Good luck to you and fuzzy pickles, man!
Also, wanted newcomers to the next Smash? My tops would be Andy (Advance Wars), Isaac (Golden Sun), and Paula (you know).

I just binged all 599 of your comic strips today, and I've gotta say they are awesome! I didn't think something like that could keep my attention for so long, but it did! You've only made the passionate love I have for Waluigi grow stronger.
My question is kinda weird, but are there any quirky "Self-made" games you've played using Nintendos games as a base? Ex: King of the hill in smash bros.

Hey Matthew! I first heard of your webcomic back when Brawl first came out (I think my brother had found it online), and rediscovered it over a year ago. I really love it and I'm devastated it's ending.
What character would you want in smash, like your dream character? What about your dream stage? Item? What series do you think should have more representation, and what character should be included as part of that?
How do you feel about Ganondorf being a clone of Captain Falcon?
Will we ever see anymore Dededolls being sold? I've always wanted one, but I started reading way after they were sold out. I probably will buy the BitF collection, you need all the help you can get for Tadpole Treble.
Loved last night's strip! What a great way to end the comic!

Hi Matthew! I'm a huge fan of all your work, especially everything you put into Turnabout Musical.
What about video games makes you happy/love them so much? I know I'm sort of asking you to define fun, but this question has been haunting me recently.
Video games have lost their appeal to me over the past few years and have been feeling like a dead-end aspect of my life. I pretty much grew up with a GameCube controller in my hand; video games as a whole have taken up the majority of my free time. I use competitive games to meet friends, but most other games have begun to lose their magic. I even feel unmotivated to go to Smash tournaments. Should I stop playing video games? If not, how do I make video games a meaningful part of my life without making them my whole life? (i.e. a career).
Sorry for my obscure question, I'm just trying to break from this uneasiness I have about video games.
I wish you the best of luck with future projects, your career, and the rest of your life!

Hi Matt! Thanks for taking the time out of your life to not only do this, but for providing hours of entertainment that I'm sure all of us have gotten from reading your comic.
A couple of questions for you:
Is there any comic, that looking back on it now, you wished you either did differently or replaced entirely with a different strip idea?
I don't know if it'll be in the books at all, but is there any plan to do a "cutting-room floor" type of list of ideas that never made it to the full comic?
If you could add any non-Nintendo video game character to Smash, who would it be?

Thank you for (basically) naming my cat! Kirby 64 has always been one of my favorite games, and reading BiTF way back when, god back in 2008 (comic 40, after a little digging)... you called the painter Adeleine- I had no idea that was her name! A short while after, we got a new cat... and thus she was named after the painter in Kirby 64, all thanks to BitF! Side note, Telltale is my favorite BitF strip. Not quite sure why... the 2nd & 3rd panels just kill me.

First off I want to say thank you so much for this wonderful comic, it has been a huge inspiration to me as someone who likes to draw cartoons, plus I'm a huge Kirby fan.
And now my question! You've been writing for these characters for several years and I imagine you've grown quite attached to them. With this in mind, is there something specific you would like to see Nintendo do with the characters in future installments? (i.e., expand on their personalities, relationships, or what-have-you)
Thank you again for everything!

First off, I'd just like to say that I've been reading BitF faithfully ever since either P-Block or Under New Management, so quite a long time!
Quick question: Have you played Xenoblade Chronicles at all? I played it recently and it's quickly become a new favorite. Would HIGHLY recommend it, even if you don't know anything about it.
Secondly, would you be willing to play the new Smash with fans sometime? Personally, I have you added as a friend on my Wii U, so hopefully I can get a few matches in when that comes out!

Oh, I hope I'm not too late...
I've been a fan of Brawl in the Family for a long time (since the blue-line-on-white-background days) and I always enjoyed how you could keep thinking of new material and new ways to use characters, especially when you did A Christmas Carol a couple of years ago; I like that the comics felt natural, and even repeated jokes didn't grow stale Did you always have plans for the future of your comic and stories you wanted to develop? Or did the story ideas come as you wrote more and more?

Matt, I'm feeling really bittersweet right now. I'm gonna really miss your comic. I've been following it since before it had its own website, and it's helped brighten up each week of my life for me a little more. I'm sad to see it leave, but I'm amazed at how far it's come and how much it's evolved with time. Even though I'd love to see more BitF, I respect your decision to take a page from Bill Watterson's book and quit while you're ahead.
Anyway I should probably ask a real question. Favorite character/stage is in each Smash game?

Either way, thank you for over six years of the best comic I've ever read. I hope everything else you do is, like, six times as successful as BitF.
3ccles ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:10:48 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hey Matt!
You're getting this all over the place lately, but it's really necessary to say you've brought so much joy to so many people. I mean, the $200 000+ on Kickstarter is evidence of that. I've been following it since I found "Fortune Cookies" in a Google Image search, and it's really inspired me.
I have 2 questions. First, will any Nintendo or BiTF songs appear as bonus stages or something in Tadpole Treble? And second, do you have any plans for BitFinity after Tadpole Treble? As some people have also said, a BitFinity Twitter or Facebook would be really helpful for us to follow your future work.
So thanks, Matthew. I'm looking forward to playing Tadpole Treble on Wii U!
2brostudio ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:12:15 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hey Matt, all I can say is how well the strip turned out. A friend of mine showed it to me a few years ago, and I've truly enjoyed following the adventures you've made over the years, and in general seeing it become much more from its humble roots, art style and all. It really saddens me that it's coming to an end, but just like in the last comic the story will always go on.
Anywho, to the question(s). What are your plans after the end? Are you thinking of doing anything else art (asside from NF magazine) or game related (after Tadpole Treble of course), pertaining to Nintendo or not? I guess more importantly, are you going to still have an online presence if we so choose to follow your endeavors?
And a little off-topic but, what do you prefer drawing with? Pen and paper, tablet, cintiq and alternatives,...mouse? Finally, what game or game series would you like to see recreated?

This may seem like a weird question, but: You often talked about new Nintendo games that came out. But you never really said much about Kirby Triple Deluxe aside from that Archer comic, iirc. Hich disappointed me because it's easily one of my favorite games ever (I could rave about it endlessly). So, what were your thoughts on Kirby Triple Deluxe? Did you have any really good comic ideas for it?

Matthew, I've been an active fan for five years. I somehow managed to get an answer from you on your last AMA, and it made my week. Although I'm sad to see BitF go, I think you've done quite possibly the best ending for the series. It kind of reminds me on how the Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes ended. For our favorite heroes, the adventure continues! Honestly, I really want to thank you. You've given me and my little sister years of inside jokes. I honestly think you've really changed our relationship. I would love to see what you have next, and you'll have my support with whatever direction your going.
My question is, was there ever a series outside of the classic Nintendo relam (i.e. X-Box, PS, PC) that you really wanted to joke around with? I would love to see the directions you would take with something like Halo, Team Fortress, Mass Effect, or any other big games we've had in the past six years!
Again, thanks for the laughs, Matt. You've really been a big influence on me and my sister! Brawl in the Family will always have a place in my heart. But wherever you are man, I'll be sure to look. (Hopefully, this didn't sound too stalky.)

Not a question, but I just wanna say thanks for the years of comics.
I've been reading since June-July of 2008 (I think? I know it was close to the beginning), and I've been reading it to my little cousin (who is eight now) ever since he was old enough to start getting the jokes. We greet each other with "HOY SMALL FRY" all the time.
I'm sad to see it go, but I understand your reasoning behind it and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

I read your comics a long time ago (before it had a site site). When I found out it was continued on the site a few weeks ago, well... I had some catching up to do. I guess my question to you, is: If you had to pick, who would be your favorite BitF character? I love your Waluigi, but I think your version of Meta-Knight and Adeline are my favorites. I really do think that a lot of people only know Adeline because of your comics. Thanks again for the ride, Matthew!
Latromi ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:39:53 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hey Matt!
Thanks for all the laughs over the years! It was my yearly tradition to sit and read all of your comics from the past year in one go and end it off with whatever your Xmas comic was. I always loved the musical ones.
Unlike a lot of other people who have good memories of Xmas, I really have a lot of bad feelings and memories about Xmas, so reading your comics during what was usually my worst time of year for depression really kept me going.
Any chance we might see some occasional Youtube material now and then one day? Possibly musical things? The History of Nintendo and If It Takes A Lifetime are probably some of my favorite fan videos on Youtube!
Also, good luck with Tadpole Treble. I may pick it up sometime and give it a shot! It makes me happy that the first big game you are coming up with is musical! I hope it ends up a huge success and gives you enough profits to keep forging on without worry of what your next project will be!

How did you first get into Nintendo?
And since I'm unlikely to find somewhere else to post this, Brawl in the Family was fantastic, the quality was pretty consistent, and I love how you evolved these characters without ever being disrespectful to the source material. Thank you for creating it.

Hi, Matthew! Just wanted to say thank you for all of the work you've put into your comic. I've enjoyed everything you've put out there.
Also, I think it's really cool that you're a Christian. You don't normally see too many people in the gaming community that are so it was nice having someone I look up to be one.
Wish you the best in your work with Tadpole Treble and your future endeavors~

Did Nintendo ever say anything about the Dedede plushies you were selling? I imagine they are close enough to parody or whatever that they didn't, but did they know about it? Like did you ask them first before trying to sell it?
The above sounds snarky but it's not! I'm genuinely curious

Will there ever be a way to get the books after the kickstarter? Money is super tight right now, but I want to throw money at you for the trilogy. (Physically). Super bummed about the end, but I'm so happy with what you've done with the series.

Brawl in the Family never fails to make me smile, so thanks for making such a great webcomic. The way you make the characters interact with each other was simply great. I'm sad to see the comic go, but at the same time I'm eager to see what you have planned for number 600.
It's great to hear that Tadpole Treble is coming to Wii U, and I gotta ask: How does it feel to release a game on a Nintendo console?

Hello Matt! I'm a huge fan, I met you at UBcon a few years back and talked to you for a bit. I ended up buying all three of the t-shirts you were selling and you drew me a wonderful picture of Ness and Mr. Saturn. Anyways, onto my question.
You've always had a knack for song writing, "The History of Nintendo" is incredibly catchy and probably what I think of the most when I think of Brawl in the Family. What musicians have influenced you and what gets you in the song writing mood?

I'm super super late to the AMA, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the laughs and good times I've received from this comic. I found it years and years ago, I want to say about 6 years. And it's sad to see it go, but I'm really happy that you're video game career is going somewhere! Hopefully it continues to grow and you become more successful in that! Thanks again for the comic series (and all the personality you've given Waluigi)!

I don't really have a question, I just wanted to thank you for making BitF what it is. I was really caught off guard when I read that it was ending, and I was surprised at how emotional my reaction was. From the final farewell of Fishman, to even the sweet little alt-text saying "I love you! Goodbye!", I can't help but cry a little at the comic ending. I'm being affected by this big emotional investment that I hadn't even realized I'd made. But I'm not too sad, cause I got to enjoy it in the first place. Thank you for making BitF, and I wish you luck and happiness in whatever you do.

I've read a ton of video game web comics in my day... and yours is one of the finest out there. I'm sad to see you hang up your hat, but damn if you didn't have a good run. Thank you so much for the comic!
I have a pretty simple question. I know you're a huge fan of Wind Waker and Kirby, but, what's your top 5 video games ever?

5 hours later, i got up and it was the best comic strip i've read on the internet
I'm sad that you're finishing it, but hey that was a lot of work for 6.5 years :D
I want to wish you all the best and i'll be buying your volumes as these comics are a marvel
Good luck in your next project :D

Hey Matt, hopefully you'll see this on your second way through.
About a year ago you were kind enough to come onto one of our podcasts as a guest. I was this close to being on that episode to get to talk to you, but it was recorded the very same day I moved back on-campus for school.
Do you ever have a problem with just how common the name Matthew is? Because seriously, I was in a theater show in high school where there were four of us. It's nuts!

I enjoyed your comics very much! I hope you are having a great day. I would like to also ask if you're willing to share 3ds/wii U friend codes with us? Even though we might overload your system.
Another question is regarding to the Academy, where Master Hand becomes Crazy Hand. MH represents you, or does CH? As MH prior to becoming possessed with Dark Matter acts a lot like his own character, even with less omnipotence, just my feeling.

Hey Matthew, I just want to thank you for making such a wonderful comic! I unfortunately didn't discover the comic until its ending was announced. However, I have since read through the entire series, and it was one of the most enjoyable things I've ever read. I love your portrayal of all of the characters, especially Adeleine, who is just adorable. So even though I'm sad to see that the comic is ending, I'm very happy with how well it did, and I'll be sure to follow whatever you're doing next.

Hi. While I must first give my immense thanks for the funzies throughout all these years, I must ask: Did Nintendo had any sort of hand in the cancellation of Brawl in the Family? I mean, the dates line up too well, and the announcement of the announcement was announced too suddenly, as if it you gotten some sort of cease-and-desist letter or something. Is something the matter, or am I imagining things?

Not so much a question, rather than fan mail.
This was probably one of my favorite webcomics, and one that I followed religiously ever since I discovered it way back when, actually around when you did that Turnabout Kirby story arc. The happy-go-lucky attitude and the style was always brining me back for more, and I couldn't not share Ganondorf singing "All I Want For Christmas" with my friends.
I'm incredibly sad to see it go, but of course you coudln't have picked more of a fitting, symbolic end date for it. It was Brawl in the Family, and the era of Brawl will officially end (in NA) on the same day.
Thank you for the comic, the laughs, and all the relatable situations. You da man, Matthew.
