As someone who has never played a smash game before, the lack of any help in the demo is pretty annoying. I have just tried to adapt from guides for the GC version, but I'm still having trouble with double jump using up. It works fine when on the platform, but if I am knocked off it doesn't.

Is there a certain duration that I should hold the button down to ensure that the final smash is actually activated? It seemed that your finger hesitated for a second so I just wanted to make sure.

Serious answer:
There are many ways to recover. Many, many, many ways. It'd be hard to list them all!
Many characters have an up+b special that gives them an aerial lift. This is usually used after using a double jump for maximum height to get back on stage. Some characters, however, like Jigglypuff and Yoshi already have a very good double jump recovery (Jiggly can float and Yoshi's double jump goes very far) so their Up+B is different. Kirby is a special case in where he can float very high and has an up+b special that goes skyward.
There are special cases where Up+B isn't always the best way to recover either! They Luigi or Pikachu. If you get launched sideways, double jumping and Up+B might not be enough to get you back on stage (For Pikachu this is less likely as his Up+B is very good) but they have their side special which can launch them horizontally very far so that would be a better way to get back on stage. Luigi is also special as his down+b also has a small "lift" at the end of the attack.
Overall, it really depends on the character you're using! See what attacks go in what direction. Your main goal is to knock your opponent off the stage, but your other main goal is to survive!

Oh, if it's the demo I can give you a bit better tips. If I were to list the entire cast it would take me years.
Mario - Before his side+b used to be able to launch him forward a small bit, but that's been changed. His main recovery now is to double jump and up+b. If you learned advanced techniques, it's also possible to use FLUDD (down+b) to bring yourself back to the stage.
Link - Link has been buffed a lot since previous iterations. His Up+B goes way higher than it used to making it an excellent recovery. You can also use his hookshot (grab) to latch onto the side of the stage as a second form of recovering.
Pikachu - Listed him before and he hasn't changed. If you didn't know, quick attack (up+b) goes in two direction that are different from one another. So you can't do say (I'll be using compass direction for this), up+b in the north direction twice. You'll have to go north then northeast or northwest for maximum lift.
Megaman - He's a newcomer but his recovery is very basic. Rush coil is his up+b which launches him up in the air. It goes very far so it shouldn't be much trouble
Villager - Now this guy. He's a newcomer with the most insane recovery I've ever seen. His balloon fighter up+b goes insanely high. Keep pressing b to ascend higher and higher. Remember that the balloons can be popped though, and that he'll fall into a helpless state afterwards. He also has his ridiculous side+b the Lloyd rocket. Holding side+b long enough makes villager ride the rocket which goes a very far horizontal distance. Overall, it's very very easy to recover with Villager.

You can hold B with Villager actually. Just like in Balloon Fight. C:

Another serious question (man, the Joker wouldn't bear all this seriousness): I've main'd Pikachu my whole life, but only now with Sm4sh I'll try to play to play a little better (thanks to this sub. I tried Smash Boards, 2hardcore4me). The thing is: is there any way for me to keep attacking or jumping after using a side or up special? I'm asking this because sometimes I watch tourneys and see guys doing DBZ-like fights beneath the stage and recovering! Does that require a lot of training or is it easier than it seems?

Most character's Up+B leaves you in a state of helplessness (exceptions being characters like Sonic). Pikachu is not an exception so you won't be able to attack out of shield.
Side B is different though. But not by much. You'll be able to attack after the end of the special, but it isn't used for much more than just a horizontal recovery.

I think the biggest thing is that this post is such an outrageous change of pace in this sub. This sub is filled with experts who love Melee for its competitive value and hate brawl for being casual (for the most part), and here we get this, a guy asking how to do one of the most basic moves in smash. Nobody should be offended, it's just jarring for the people of this sub.

Press B without holding any directions on the control stick
TL;DR: You press B. B as in boy. You also can't be touching your control stick, as that will cause you to input an up, side, or down special instead of activating your Final Smash. However, I don't think this makes much sense. I mean, B is for special moves. Final Smashes sure are special, but when you get one, what's the first thing you wanna do? Utterly destroy someone's soul with it. You don't wanna use B! B is like a secondary button. It's smaller on the Gamecube controller, and it's on the back of the Wiimote/Nunchuck setup. And on the Classic controller? Well, it's connected to a wiimote, and the B is still on the back, huh? Final Smashes ain't no secondary weapon. They don't deserve to be 2nd place, the underdog, the B button, and B button doesn't even DESERVE Final Smash, with its little bitch ass. I gotta say, I think that Final Smashes should be activated via the dpad. What's the dpad got? 4 different ways to add flair and style to your gameplay. Oh, just walkin around... BOOM input that taunt for disrespect! Who doesn't love to taunt whenever possible? Some taunts are better than others, of course, but if you get taunted in the middle of a match, do you EVER go "Wow he should have used his utaunt instead of his dtaunt?" or anything like that? Unless your opponent had a chance to actually destroy your opponent with a taunt and used the wrong one, a taunt is a taunt. It gets everyone hyped, it gets blood flowing, it drops some mad disrespect, and you tuck in your opponent like CRAZY. The dpad also lets you STEP ON YOUR OPPONENT'S HEAD. Oh, just trying to edgeguard you traditionally... NOPE! Is your opponent an utter scrub? If so, you can footstool his bitch ass into oblivion, all with a quirky animation, no damage dealt, and if he's just a true scrub, he'll be left thinking about what just happened. Now imagine if you could use the SAME amazing inputs... to use a Final Smash. Now THAT would be absolutely amazing. People watch your hand move ever closer to the dpad, expecting a random taunt, or perhaps you're going for a taunt that does damage? They don't know. We don't know. But then, surprise surprise! You actually input a Final Smash, surprising everyone. You become the star of the smashfest, everyone asking you for signatures and tips on how to get better. You can't keep the ladies off of you, and the money just starts flowing in from the esports you have. But no, the default controls, unfortunately, set the activation of your Final Smash to Neutral B (don't hold your control stick in any direction.)

I don't really play super smash bros, but I am surprised that more games on consoles and pc don't follow the rule of placing higher use actions on easier to press keys. The more rare you use something, the farther you should reach for it.
It's on stamina mode, so if the opponent's HP is low enough the game ends as soon as the hit connects.

Could you imagine? There's a random patch update for your 3DS, it finishes, you start the game up. You're in the middle of a match and you pause to do something. As soon as you pause your game goes blank. Then it changes to purple with the words A CHALLENGER APPROACHES scrawled across both screens.
Instead of DLC, I would love it if they just secretly added characters in patches and let everyone relive the joy of being surprised, then announce the character a few days later for those that missed them.
Like, each patch just added a portion of the code for Ridley, so everytime you update you think oh, just 20mb, no new characters, and then all of a sudden BOOM Ridley.

Smash 4, or sm4sh, is the upcoming smashbros game, being released on wiiu and 3ds. the game hasn't come out yet, but platinum members of club nintendo received a code for an infinite amount of plays demo, showcasing the basic game (5 characters, 1 stage). It isn't bad, I may see about buying it.
Only the Club Nintendo members who moved to platinum status between July 2013 to June 2014, have registered their 3DS handhelds, and have opted in for emails will be selected to receive [the demo immediately].
A public demo will be made available to all 3DS owners on September 19.

I always liked King Dedede but he was too fat for me, hopefully Smash 4 takes care of that. Wario not having even a semi-inspired WarioLand moveset irked me but I'm over that now I'll give him a try too. (I do think giving him his WarioWare look and stage was actually a really good move)

There are other people that spend a fair amount of time and effort on a selfpost and it ends up with a single digit score and 2 comments. This sub has kind of shit priorities.

Go with B. I've never played this game and honestly I'm not sure whether a 3DS is like a Wii or a Gameboy, but B seems to be the answer. A would be too obvious. C would be too difficult for the younger players. B is right there in the middle.

It comes out on October 3rd but Nintendo released a closed demo of the game. Sent out by email and whoever got the email was given a download code, and a fee invite codes. I got one the other day from a friend

You press B, but some final smashes don't work if you're too far from the opponent, like Link's, so you have to get closer to the opponent to use the final smash.
One thing i haven't seen people mention is that if you press b immediately after getting the final smash, you can actually still use neutral b. It has a lag time before you can use it, probably to make it possible for other players to knock it out of you.

Final smashes were added in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, for the Wii. Rarely, a moving, floating orb item resembling the Smash Bros. Logo will appear. Break it and the screen dims (except for the characters), and your character glows rainbowy. Pressing the smash attack button (I think) unleashes a powerful one-use attack called a Final Smash... every character has a different Final Smash. Look it up!

As someone who has never played a smash game before, the lack of any help in the demo is pretty annoying. I have just tried to adapt from guides for the GC version, but I'm still having trouble with double jump using up. It works fine when on the platform, but if I am knocked off it doesn't.

In Brawl I couldn't beat the first mission in Sub Space because I didn't know how to open the door after a couple days I finally figured it out. Looking back I feel very silly.

Serious answer:
There are many ways to recover. Many, many, many ways. It'd be hard to list them all!
Many characters have an up+b special that gives them an aerial lift. This is usually used after using a double jump for maximum height to get back on stage. Some characters, however, like Jigglypuff and Yoshi already have a very good double jump recovery (Jiggly can float and Yoshi's double jump goes very far) so their Up+B is different. Kirby is a special case in where he can float very high and has an up+b special that goes skyward.
There are special cases where Up+B isn't always the best way to recover either! They Luigi or Pikachu. If you get launched sideways, double jumping and Up+B might not be enough to get you back on stage (For Pikachu this is less likely as his Up+B is very good) but they have their side special which can launch them horizontally very far so that would be a better way to get back on stage. Luigi is also special as his down+b also has a small "lift" at the end of the attack.
Overall, it really depends on the character you're using! See what attacks go in what direction. Your main goal is to knock your opponent off the stage, but your other main goal is to survive!

Oh, if it's the demo I can give you a bit better tips. If I were to list the entire cast it would take me years.
Mario - Before his side+b used to be able to launch him forward a small bit, but that's been changed. His main recovery now is to double jump and up+b. If you learned advanced techniques, it's also possible to use FLUDD (down+b) to bring yourself back to the stage.
Link - Link has been buffed a lot since previous iterations. His Up+B goes way higher than it used to making it an excellent recovery. You can also use his hookshot (grab) to latch onto the side of the stage as a second form of recovering.
Pikachu - Listed him before and he hasn't changed. If you didn't know, quick attack (up+b) goes in two direction that are different from one another. So you can't do say (I'll be using compass direction for this), up+b in the north direction twice. You'll have to go north then northeast or northwest for maximum lift.
Megaman - He's a newcomer but his recovery is very basic. Rush coil is his up+b which launches him up in the air. It goes very far so it shouldn't be much trouble
Villager - Now this guy. He's a newcomer with the most insane recovery I've ever seen. His balloon fighter up+b goes insanely high. Keep pressing b to ascend higher and higher. Remember that the balloons can be popped though, and that he'll fall into a helpless state afterwards. He also has his ridiculous side+b the Lloyd rocket. Holding side+b long enough makes villager ride the rocket which goes a very far horizontal distance. Overall, it's very very easy to recover with Villager.

Another serious question (man, the Joker wouldn't bear all this seriousness): I've main'd Pikachu my whole life, but only now with Sm4sh I'll try to play to play a little better (thanks to this sub. I tried Smash Boards, 2hardcore4me). The thing is: is there any way for me to keep attacking or jumping after using a side or up special? I'm asking this because sometimes I watch tourneys and see guys doing DBZ-like fights beneath the stage and recovering! Does that require a lot of training or is it easier than it seems?
Side note: English is my second language.

Most character's Up+B leaves you in a state of helplessness (exceptions being characters like Sonic). Pikachu is not an exception so you won't be able to attack out of shield.
Side B is different though. But not by much. You'll be able to attack after the end of the special, but it isn't used for much more than just a horizontal recovery.

I think the biggest thing is that this post is such an outrageous change of pace in this sub. Press B without holding any directions on the control stick
TL;DR: You press B. B as in boy. You also can't be touching your control stick, as that will cause you to input an up, side, or down special instead of activating your Final Smash. However, I don't think this makes much sense. I mean, B is for special moves. Final Smashes sure are special, but when you get one, what's the first thing you wanna do? Utterly destroy someone's soul with it. You don't wanna use B! B is like a secondary button. It's smaller on the Gamecube controller, and it's on the back of the Wiimote/Nunchuck setup. And on the Classic controller? Well, it's connected to a wiimote, and the B is still on the back, huh? Final Smashes ain't no secondary weapon. They don't deserve to be 2nd place, the underdog, the B button, and B button doesn't even DESERVE Final Smash, with its little bitch ass. I gotta say, I think that Final Smashes should be activated via the dpad. What's the dpad got? 4 different ways to add flair and style to your gameplay. Oh, just walkin around... BOOM input that taunt for disrespect! Who doesn't love to taunt whenever possible? Some taunts are better than others, of course, but if you get taunted in the middle of a match, do you EVER go "Wow he should have used his utaunt instead of his dtaunt?" or anything like that? Unless your opponent had a chance to actually destroy your opponent with a taunt and used the wrong one, a taunt is a taunt. It gets everyone hyped, it gets blood flowing, it drops some mad disrespect, and you tuck in your opponent like CRAZY. The dpad also lets you STEP ON YOUR OPPONENT'S HEAD. Oh, just trying to edgeguard you traditionally... NOPE! Is your opponent an utter scrub? If so, you can footstool his bitch ass into oblivion, all with a quirky animation, no damage dealt, and if he's just a true scrub, he'll be left thinking about what just happened. Now imagine if you could use the SAME amazing inputs... to use a Final Smash. Now THAT would be absolutely amazing. People watch your hand move ever closer to the dpad, expecting a random taunt, or perhaps you're going for a taunt that does damage? They don't know. We don't know. But then, surprise surprise! You actually input a Final Smash, surprising everyone. You become the star of the smashfest, everyone asking you for signatures and tips on how to get better. You can't keep the ladies off of you, and the money just starts flowing in from the esports you have. But no, the default controls, unfortunately, set the activation of your Final Smash to Neutral B (don't hold your control stick in any direction.)

Smash 4, or sm4sh, is the upcoming smashbros game, being released on wiiu and 3ds. the game hasn't come out yet, but platinum members of club nintendo received a code for an infinite amount of plays demo, showcasing the basic game (5 characters, 1 stage). It isn't bad, I may see about buying it.

I always liked King Dedede but he was too fat for me, hopefully Smash 4 takes care of that. Wario not having even a semi-inspired WarioLand moveset irked me but I'm over that now I'll give him a try too. (I do think giving him his WarioWare look and stage was actually a really good move)

It comes out on October 3rd but Nintendo released a closed demo of the game. Sent out by email and whoever got the email was given a download code, and a fee invite codes. I got one the other day from a friend

One thing i haven't seen people mention is that if you press b immediately after getting the final smash, you can actually still use neutral b. It has a lag time before you can use it, probably to make it possible for other players to knock it out of you.

Final smashes were added in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, for the Wii. Rarely, a moving, floating orb item resembling the Smash Bros. Logo will appear. Break it and the screen dims (except for the characters), and your character glows rainbowy. Pressing the smash attack button (I think) unleashes a powerful one-use attack called a Final Smash... every character has a different Final Smash. Look it up!
