Yep. I went to one where they showed us how to paint Venice at Twilight. The instructor was actively encouraging anyone who didn't find that interesting to riff on it or paint something else completely.

I screwed mine up and it looked really overly dark and spooky... so I painted in a shit ton of bats and called it Dracula's castle.

I've got old college friend who teaches these sorts of classes. She'd love it if someone painted things like this.

I remember being in class with her, working on designing Halloween children's books, and watching as she lovingly painted a page where a greedy child got her face nailed to the floor by a serial killer.

I've never gone to one of these things, but knowing what I know about people I'd say it's probably split pretty evenly between people like yourself and people on power trips who will throw a hissy fit if you don't do what they say.

These lighthouse paintings, and the shark one, all seem to kind of suck. I mean sure it's fun, but you wouldn't hang it on your wall unless you or someone you know painted it. But do you ever get any students that you instruct that are actually really great painters, and you think wow holy shit what are you doing in Paint Nite when you can actually paint.

Instructor here, too! I love when people do things like this - and also love seeing someone who was feeling 'meh' about the class get really enthusiastic about it when they start making the painting uniquely "theirs."

They are all over these days. Pottery painting too. They let us bring wine and snacks or have a pizza delivered. I now have some really cool soy sauce bowls and boyfriend made himself a pokemon cereal bowl (and he almost cried when he accidently shattered it the other day)

It is fun, and it's a great idea for a date. It's usually in a bar or restaurant, so you can have a drink; the instructor gives you a step by step demonstration, so you don't need to be good at painting; and it's got a predetermined start and end time, so it's easy to plan your night around it. Plus, you get a painting to take home with you at the end of the night

They are laid back painting classes for adults. You bring along your own drink (doesn't have to be booze) and there is an instructor present and you paint some sort of painting with acrylic paints and bring it home at the end. It's a fun night, it's kinda like a cocktail party but with paint. They also have Paint Your Own Pottery studios where you can do the same thing.

Don't have to know how to! Most of those places have the actual artwork penciled onto the campus. All you have to do is mix the colors and paint in the lines... and drink!

All you need are lots of good brushes and lots of colors and it comes out quite nice. Those paint night places have them all for you. And i'm guessing no clean-up :) I've only been to the pottery painting place but hey let me use as many brushes and paints as I liked.

Follow the patron saint of learning to paint, that was the very purpose of his shows, and /r/HappyTrees shows that the method works pretty well. This is not my particular hobby (mine is /r/minipainting) but is similar enough, and i can tell you that the awe you get when you finish something is great

I get that. But these people could have 'paint nights' where they don't all paint the exact same thing. Where they are given quick lessons about painting and drawing that could be used for any image. I am passionate about people having art hobbies, and things like this make people feel like they need their hand held through the whole process.

I am saying that teaching in this way stifles someone's ability to think they can do it alone as well as their own creativity. This method will make them always believe that art is out of their reach unless they paint by numbers. This art class is shitty marijuana, and is not a gateway to the wonderful herion available through fun experimentation.

This is why when users tell us "let the votes decide!" we tell them no, and explain why you cannot post a video in /r/AskReddit (or some other funky request). If we let the votes decide, there'd be videos or pictures or whatever in /r/AskReddit at the top.

This is because people rarely look at the sub when on their front page and see something and upvote it. They scan down, see something they like, click the link, enjoy the picture, close the tab and hit the upvote. They don't realize they just upvoted a meme in /r/IAmA, rather they assumed it was from /r/AdviceAnimals or here (I still see memes here despite the rule :).

My art teacher was a fucking prick and made me sit back in class for little reasons, so instead of me drawing a big tree (as we were supposed to), I drew a dragon engulfing the shit in flames. The thing about it was that I didn't show anyone else, and I was just having a good time. If it was finished, I would have shown my friends.

They are contractors brought into a restaurant/bar through another company and are usually payed next to nothing. They're only hope of the night being worth it for them are the tips. You're helping to perpetuate businesses to underpay their staff by purchasing the event tickets in the first place; by not tipping you're just screwing over some poor artist. If you are already going to these events just throw five bucks into the bucket; it's just like tipping your bartender or server.
