I believe the bit he stole was from Louis C.K., but C.K. was pretty chill about it and even had Cook on his TV show to let their fans know they were cool.
All that proves is that he can deliver a joke. Presentation is only so much of the humor, which hinders a rehashed joke by default (if you've already heard it, otherwise perceived new content and solid delivery makes for quality content).

The joke is that the kid is volunteering to take the dog out for a walk, and is excited about it, an activity he likely does not regularly enjoy doing. He is in fact not doing it for his dog, whom he claimed looks like he wants a walk, but is instead dreaming about all of the Pokemon located at the park.
Is it really that hard to understand it? Or are people here just being edgy because someone who doesn't play video games made comics about Pokemon? It's only cool when we talk about them or something?
I don't even read the comic but based on the title alone I'd guess it's a comic about family interactions, and this week it's referencing Pokemon. I think that's pretty cool to be honest. I like a world where normal people create comics about Pokemon.
It's absolutely a joke. The first panel sets up an expectation--that Billy is being helpful around the house by taking the dog out for a walk--and then the second panel shows what's really going on, which is that Billy just wants to go catch Pokemon.
You can argue about whether you think it's funny or not, but it's a classic format for a joke.

As if other cartoons have jokes in them... Family Circus gets so much shit I Reddit but I think this is amusing at least. It's relatable and making a point that kids now want to go do chores because they can find and hatch Pokemon as they do it. It's funnier for someone who sees the difference between kids before and after PoGo came out. It doesn't have to be laugh-out-loud knee-slapping guffaws wracking your body with spasms, but it brings a smile to your face.
The comic strip I absolutely hate the most. The "jokes" are things that really old people might chuckle at because they think it's cute funny. I have no idea how it is still in print.

Holy shit, I don't think I've ever seen so much undue hate for something so innocently simple. Who cares if you like Family Circus or not--there's a Pokemon Go joke in a syndicated newspaper comic, and that's pretty cool!
The joke is also extremely obvious. After responding to a few of you, I've condensed it to this:

Family Circus is probably my least favorite newspaper comic, but there's nothing intrinsically wrong with this particular strip. Plus, it's obviously relevant to Pokemon Go, and as other Redditors have pointed out, not only are the Pokemon in the picture almost perfectly drawn, they also are (besides Weedle and Zubat) all rare enough to make a kid dream of finding them, and all Gen 1, no legendaries, etc. The author obviously made himself familiar with Pokemon Go before drawing this strip, either by playing it himself or consulting someone who does. He even included silhouettes in the background reminiscent of when you see an unknown Pokemon on the tracker!
If you're gonna hate on something that is absolutely on-point for this subreddit, maybe you should find a different subreddit.
And it's also a great indication of how relatively fast print media can move these days, in spite of the general perception that it's the slowly dying dinosaur of modern media. With a little help from modern technology, print creators can slip current pop culture references into their work
Consider the GO references in the recent issue of Amazing Spider-Man. It's entirely possible that there was different dialogue in place before someone--the writer, an editor, etc.--thought, "Hey, let's be topical and slip a Pokemon GO reference or two in there." Thanks to things like digital proofs of the original page art (and of course, these days, the art is often digitally created in the first place) and digital lettering, the dialogue can be changed in minutes, and a reference to something that started in July makes it into a comic book released at the end of August. In the days when I was growing up reading comics (thirtysomething years ago), it could have been November or December before that reference could have made it to print--if they even decided to use it at all and gamble on the craze not being a flash-in-the-pan and being over by that time.

Every strip is a bland, mild joke or observation about little kids being cute or bratty. It's widely considered unfunny by people in the typical Reddit demographic. That's all. There's never any real wit or creativity. The intended audience is elderly people who want a warm smile or chuckle.
I'm actually impressed with the accuracy of this comic. Aside from Weedle and Zubat, all the Pokรฉmon are actually uncommon or rare spawns that a kid (or I) might be excited to see. Common trash spawns aren't there, presumably because Billy isn't hoping to find them. There are no legendaries, regional exclusives, or Gen 2+ Pokรฉmon. I'd wager that the author is a player or checked with a friend/family member who is.

Yeah, all of them are clearly sight-copied from the official art by Ken Sugimori, but they're done carefully on-model. (There are just enough differences, like Omanyte's tentacles being a little rounded, At the very least, somebody gave Jeff Keane a good list of Pokemon to include in the strip and he took it to Google.
Did you correct yourself because you found something in the comic that's accurate to Red and Blue, but not to Pokemon Go? Because the whole comic looks pretty accurate to the game to me.
But a boy can dream, which is all that's happening there.

Nothing wrong with it, but it's a lot like Marmaduke. It was old in the 80's when I was reading it and positively ancient by today's standard (looking at wiki, looks like 1960).
It's sort of like when you watch a movie from another generation and things just seem a bit off. Instead of being in your face funny or racy or any number of other things, Family Circus relies on cuteness and something resembling "observational humor". Sometimes there's jokes, but as often as not they're meant to spark a memory or just reaffirm the idea that the world, particularly with regards to children, is a good place.
I feel like this is me.. But about 15 years older than that kid :-/
Oh well, I play only on dog walks and my dog enjoys longer walks.

The eyes of the boy in the second picture are the only thing ruining it for me because it throws a negative light on the thing he's doing. Before I spotted his eyes, I thought the artist just wanted to create a neutral to positive vision of playing PoGo in matching combinations with everyday life.

It looks like the boy's eyebrows are arched downwards, like people do when they're angry or feeling aggressive or something. I didn't get it either at first, I had to look back at the picture.
I'm mostly surprised the syndicate let him get away with tracing over the official art for his comic, given how paranoid most publishers are about copyright infringement

Gives you full control of your phone to mess with stuff you ordinarily couldn't such as deleting the stock apps and blocking adverts. I use it mainly for conserving battery and customising the theme for everything so it all looks clean and nice.

You have to install a custom rom, you wouldn't be able to do it by accident but some phones come pre-rooted like the one plus one. If the latest update for Go works with your phone then you're not rooted. Don't worrry

Every strip is a bland, mild joke or observation about little kids being cute or bratty. It's widely considered unfunny by people in the typical Reddit demographic. That's all. There's never any real wit or creativity. The intended audience is elderly people who want a warm smile or chuckle.
I'm actually impressed with the accuracy of this comic. Aside from Weedle and Zubat, all the Pokรฉmon are actually uncommon or rare spawns that a kid (or I) might be excited to see. Common trash spawns aren't there, presumably because Billy isn't hoping to find them. There are no legendaries, regional exclusives, or Gen 2+ Pokรฉmon. I'd wager that the author is a player or checked with a friend/family member who is.

Yeah, all of them are clearly sight-copied from the official art by Ken Sugimori, but they're done carefully on-model. (There are just enough differences, like Omanyte's tentacles being a little rounded, At the very least, somebody gave Jeff Keane a good list of Pokemon to include in the strip and he took it to Google.

Nothing wrong with it, but it's a lot like Marmaduke. It was old in the 80's when I was reading it and positively ancient by today's standard (looking at wiki, looks like 1960).
It's sort of like when you watch a movie from another generation and things just seem a bit off. Instead of being in your face funny or racy or any number of other things, Family Circus relies on cuteness and something resembling "observational humor". Sometimes there's jokes, but as often as not they're meant to spark a memory or just reaffirm the idea that the world, particularly with regards to children, is a good place.

The eyes of the boy in the second picture are the only thing ruining it for me because it throws a negative light on the thing he's doing. Before I spotted his eyes, I thought the artist just wanted to create a neutral to positive vision of playing PoGo in matching combinations with everyday life.

Gives you full control of your phone to mess with stuff you ordinarily couldn't such as deleting the stock apps and blocking adverts. I use it mainly for conserving battery and customising the theme for everything so it all looks clean and nice.

You have to install a custom rom, you wouldn't be able to do it by accident but some phones come pre-rooted like the one plus one. If the latest update for Go works with your phone then you're not rooted. Don't worrry
