I don't really know much about the fibonacci sequence and it's usefulness so I'm just gonna assume there's some reason to remember it separate from it's resemblance to the metric - imperial conversion.
every number is a sum of previous two numbers. that's all needed to know to remember Fibonacci sequence. no arbitrary numbers with 3 digits after the comma.
It's pretty much found in a lot of things in the universe, especially biological organisms here on earth(numbering of petals and leaves, limb lengths, size increase in shells etc)
Sure, but who has the Fibonacci Sequence memorised that far? Sure, you can try to do the sum in your head, but I find that multiplying by 1.6 (i.e. 8/5) is much easier than doing a long sequence of sums until you find the number that fits.
Right, but like I said, that's quite a long series of sums, with plenty of room for error if you're doing it in your head. By the time you get to 34, you're not really gaining anything over just multiplying by 1.6 - or, because you're doing it in your head and just being approximation, multiplying by 1.5.
e.g. 34x1.6 = 34 + (6x34)/10
= 34+(214)/10
= 34+21.4
= 51.4
I don't feel that's any harder than going through 8 steps of the Fibonnacci sequence without making any mistakes.
Also, the approximation isn't great for the low numbers anyway, so you have a trick that's not great for low numbers, and time-consuming and unwieldy for large numbers...
Right, but if it's small numbers, the approximation becomes less exact, and it also only works if your number happens to be in the Fibonacci sequence. For 1 mile, 2 miles, and 3 miles, it's quicker, easier and basically as accurate to multiply by 1.5 in your head. 1 mile is pretty far from 2 kilometres, for instance.
And for 10 km, that number isn't even in the Fibonacci sequence. But if you know that 1 mile is about 3/2 kilometres, than 1 km is 2/3 of a mile, so 10 km is a bit under 7 miles. That seems a lot quicker and simpler than trying to find an approximation in the Fibonacci sequence.
No, I seriously do believe that multiplying by 1.5 or 1.6 is no harder. The Fibonacci method is a neat trick, but it takes enough mathematical steps that I'd never really use it in practice.

Sorry, no, I guess I don't get it. Let's use 75 miles as an example and show me how you get km without apriori knowledge of the previous sequence number. Then do it 2000 miles. Seems way easier to multiply 2000 * 1.6 = 3200. If you scale the series (e.g. use 2 for 2000, you are way off. If you need to know the previous number in the series, no?
5 miles is 8 kilometres by this conversion. 75 is 5x5x3, so 8x5x3 = 120. 75 miles actually equals 120.7 km. Close enough and easier than multiplying 75x1.6.
Anything with a lot of zeros at the end (2000) would absolutely be easier to multiply by 1.6 because you're just moving the decimal a few slaves then multiplying by a small single digit number. What's 7500 miles by that method though? But harder to multiply by 1.6 there, but do the previous calculation and you'll get 12000 km. Actual answer: 12070 km. Fibonnaci sequence is easier for tougher numbers.

Fair enough - I can see how some might find it easier to factor a random number then match one factor to the Fib seq and multiply back up. For my brain, 1.6 is a power of two (with a decimal move), so I double km 4 times and move the decimal. Bingo. Seems easier to me but maybe I'm used to doubling fast and you factor fast. Whatever works!
This is where I lost you. I don't do unit conversions by breaking up numbers by their factors. 75x1.6 is easy, and even if you don't think so, nearly every single one of us has a calculator in our pocket (contrary to what my 4th grade teacher told us).
Besides, as an american engineer, I'm constantly converting units with weird as fuck conversion factors. I know by heart that a mile is 1.6 km, a kg is 2.2 lbs, and a fluid ounce is roughly 30 ml. I also know an ounce is roughly 28 grams, but that knowledge is more recreational...
As an American chemist, conversions fucking suck and it's much easier, for me, to do multiplications by factors.
But I think we just kinda stumbled on the issue here. I do mental math by breaking things into small factors, you prefer to do the actual calculation long hand (or with a calculator), so the direct 75x1.6 calculation is easier for you. So I'd say each method is preferable for how we each do the same operation.
A few years back, parents all across america were outraged because of the concept of "common core" math - basically the methodology by which their children were being taught arithmetic.
In a way it was justified, because all of a sudden people with Bachelors degrees or even PhD's could no longer help their 8-year-old child with their math homework.
But I had a few teacher friends who explained to me that it was all regular math, just a different way to process it mentally, and I'm inclined to agree. Kids who grow up on common core can do math just as fast and are able to move on to Algebra and Calculus with no problems.
But goddamn when someone does math like this it still looks like hocus pocus to me.
My wife's a teacher, and the way she's explained it to me is this: the common Core is a great system, but it needed to be rolled out gradually from the bottom up. The way they did it requires kids in 7th grade to "know" things that they would have been taught in 5th grade, except they didn't because obviously the curriculum was different. So that's where a lot of the anger and frustration for the students came from.
I was not taught under the common Core system, in case that wasn't clear from taking about my wife. That's just how I think.

Huh, that's pretty cool. It looks like it works because the golden ratio is 1.618 and the kilometers to miles conversion is 1.613, so it's literally accurate to more than 1%.
Assuming you already know the sequence, recalling it is trivial, bordering on second nature. Multiplying by .6 isn't difficult, but it will take slightly longer. Again, this is assuming a person already knows the sequence. For the vast majority of people, multiplying is probably faster.
It is easy. Every country switched to metric except Liberia, Myanmar and the US. If the Congo, Sudan an Afghanistan can switch to metric, then so can the US.
They switched by adding it into their education system. People don't just switch measuring systems on the fly. There's not a lot I can do about being taught imperial measurements when I was younger.
Very possibly. How people do math in their head is a fun topic to talk about though! Everyone does it at least little different and those differences can be very interesting.

Took me a good 5 seconds to see through the markdown. This is exactly how I do math in my head, but I throw multiples of 5 into the mix, because that's not too bad either, and I don't have to deal with multiples of 3, which makes my brain process the parts that much quicker. I also tend to prefer additions to subtractions, even when it doesn't always make much sense to a lot of people. EG - I'll do 15x+2x for 17x, rather than 20x-3x.

It doesn't, unless you are recalculating the percentage each time which is incorrect. 10% of 100 is 10. 100 - 10 = 90. 90 - 10 = 80. Which is the same as multiplying 100 by 0.8.
You calculate the value of 10% and 8% of the total. Then subtract the value of 10% from the total 3 times. Do the same with the 8%. So it looks like this: 100 * .10 = 10. 100 * .08 = 8. 100 - (3 * 10) = 70. 70 - 8 = 62. The value of "10%" remains constant and does not update with each of the applications of "subtracting 10%"

Because this is the order that makes sense to americans.
Go into the settings and enable battery saver. Then turn your phone upside down with the app open. It turns the screen like 99% black. You can then carry it this way or put it in your pocket and just wait for a vibrate (pokemon popped) before pulling it out.
What I understood from your question, is that you want to automate the steps I described in my post (I'm not familiar with Tasker). But in actuality, you don't have to launch the screen locking app every time you want to play. You can just keep it ON, and then lock/unlock your screen whenever you want, which is pretty easy and fast to do IMO (notification panel > lock > tripe tap > unlock > ...).
Mine does this too, I tried using battery saver while I was out for a walk and I couldn't open menu, click on pokemon, or do anything until I used task manager to close the app and restarted it. Annoying.
they should just program it properly like every other gps app in the world. so it still runs behind a locked screen and vibrates or send notifications when stuff is near.

Ever played a Pokemon game before? Eggs only hatch after your avatar takes a certain number of steps in the game world, so no surprise it works the same in the real world.

Oh by back and forth mean walking 100 feet one direction to hit a pokestop, and then back to the back and so on, it seems to assume you are taking the straightest path possible.
Why not walk another 30m to the poke stop after that, then 30m to the one after that, then the one after? Plot out a circle route taking in as many as you feel comfortable getting far from your house?
I may be spoiled because I live in a major city (London), and in an area where there are heaps of stops. And it's perfectly safe and possible to just walk about with lots of interesting things to look at. There's even plenty of newsagents I can nip into get a bottle of water, and pubs if I need a pee break, or to sit in the beer garden a bit if there's a gym or lure. The only short route I did was on Sunday and someone had put a bunch of lure's around the stops in the park, so I did a couple of laps of it.
Same here, but I was at least able claim a gym in a rural area that no one has managed to kick me out of yet >:] All the gyms in the city seem to change allegiance every hour.

I have an app that tracks my steps and when I walked ~11k steps the other day, it came out to 5.12 miles (8km). I usually figure 1 mile = 20 minutes, so this is a little more than 1.5 hrs of walking which isn't so bad over the course of a day. There are people here doing 20+ km a day.
Because until ~ a hundred years ago it was usual to travel by horse/coach. To show how powerful a car is it was easiest for everyone to relate how many horses would have the same power.
Edit: Just read about it and realized I was wrong. At least a bit. James Watt invented the word horse power around a century earlier. He wanted to sell machines to the industrie where horses were used. It showed how much power is used by an average horse to move a certain object.
Except now 1 horsepower = power required to move 75 kilograms 1 meter distance in 1 second. Basically nothing whatsoever to do with horses and their numbers. Weird how times/definitions change.

It's starting to change. The registration card for Dutch cards makes no mention of horsepower. The engine power is stated in kilo Watt.
In day to day speech though, if you get a new car you're going to boast about its engine by saying how much horsepower it has.
If I were to guess why I'd assume its because it would cost an exorbitant amount of money to convert everything. Money that would be better spent fixing old bridges and highways imo.

Wood is sold as 2"x4", contractors are uncomfortable with metric, it would just cause such a huge change in the way the industry operates that they dont want to have to go through those growing pains. 2x4s are cut to 2x4 but arr actually less only because of loss from the blade width and shrinkage as the wood dries out. Nominally they start as 2x4. If you want to be an annoying pedant at least do your research. All the sizes of any kinda wood you want are cut at the mill to imperial specs.

While in a lot of places it WOULD cost a lot of money, there are a lot of huge projects that certain companies hire Canadian based workers for - mainly on bridges. While we have to relay information using Imperial, whenever we are doing our calculations we use Metric because it's so much easier.

Celsius is better for general use because you don't need that much precision in daily life. Also, each increment in Celsius is the same in Kelvin (0 to 1 in K is the same as -273 to -272 in C).
Funny enough my GPS acts up in my workplace so I can set my phone down and just watch my character run back and forth in random directions throughout my store and into the parking lot. Makes catching and hatching pretty easy.
the game may not be out, but we sure as fuck are playing it anyways. Wherever you go you see people playing Pokemon go. Most 20-30 year olds are clever enough to just use a US or australian icloud/gmail account so they can download the game anyways. I personally just downloaded an APK from a tech website. it works like a charm(ander)
Make sure you get the apk from a reputable site that checks signatures such as Apkmirror.com, the name sounds dodgy but its owned by one of the best android news pages out there.

But the game is out in several countries that use Metric. The U.S is pretty much the only country that hasn't switched over, why should we suffer because y'all are too stubborn to change.
It's not even you suffering because of us, and personally, I'd prefer metrics, but that's just me.
The reason EU doesn't have it, is America is the largest consumer for this, data shows that. They're using us to work out the kinks, then when it's mostly working, giving it to you.
It's in beta, and I am in Australia where we are being used as testers too. But we shouldn't deviate from a world standard like the metric system. I get that a large portion of players are in the US, but we shouldn't be catering to them because they refuse to fully switch over.
Maybe put in an option to change between systems?

Eh, sources are a bit unclear on that. According to the Wikipedia article, day-to-day measuring in Liberia apparently has already mostly converted, with just the legal status being unclear or something. The only news on Myanmar being in the process of converting are from 2013, so I'd expect them to have finished by now.

I had this idea and shared it in a group of 25 random people playing this game. I said it jokingly, "I regularly run 6-10 miles, I should offer egg hatching services for voluntary donations!" Everyone's head turned, surprisingly, people I don't know, and said, "I'd give you my phone and a gift card if you'd hatch my 10K for me!" Here are people I literally just met willing to entrust their phone to me. I don't think I'll be doing that service (It's likely against the ToS) but it's just fun that this game is bringing people together. Feels like family when you have a group playing.
Yea but I'm sure they'll release a micro transaction item to help hatch eggs any day now. "Advanced incubator" or something once they realize people are willing to pay $$$.

These three things are not intrinsically dependent on one another. You can work out and run without keeping a log of exact weight lifted. You can keep a log of your exact weight and distance in pounds and miles. You can do one, both, or neither, and still stay in shape.

But seriously, I can't upvote this more. The idea that only a certain type of person does something is incredibly narrow-minded. There are always exceptions to the rule, and with PoGo, everyone and their moms are playing it.
It's not actually all that hard to download it in countries where it's not out yet. Heck, I installed it on my mum's phone yesterday, she was tickled by the Raticate sitting in her mug of tea.
I just thought it was a common thing even in America. All of the runs/marathons are in kilometers. Maybe I learned that at a young age so I assumed it was common knowledge. I don't know km at all, but 5k/10k were ingrained in my head.
I'm very surprised to hear that since the Olympics have used miles for the Olympics for a long time, and I never once have heard in my life a marathon measured as 40.255 km or whichever it is; I've only heard the 26.2 miles and I've only seen the stickers of 26.2.
And to be clear, a 5k or 10k is not a marathon. Only the 26.2 is the marathon.

Idk how old you are but the last time they used miles (other than the marathon) in the Olympics for track was 1908.
That's what I've been telling people all over this thread. The marathon uses miles, as do half marathons (not an Olympic event.) while 5k and 10k and other runs use km.
Sprints also use metric, such as 100m and 400m.
However, my initial comment was that unless you're a runner most Americans aren't familiar with metric because we don't use it. That's all I said before this comment went to a shit show.

I know races are often done in km, and I also know people talk about races being 13.1 & 26.2 (Miles? Kilometers? Who knows?). No clue what any of those mean relative to each other.
Why is it even a thing in the first place to say 5k instead of 5km? Confused the fuck outta me when I saw people saying they did the 11k achievement or whatever
But why? I can tell you that I have no idea how far I'd have to walk to reach that distance whether I'm measuring it with the imperial or metric system.
For future reference, the game needs to be open and the device needs to be unlocked in order for it to count steps. Lots of people don't realize this.
Also, I read somewhere that if you are moving faster than 12(?)km per hour, it doesn't register your steps. Can't find a source, so take it or leave it.
Eh I had some issues with this today too. Walking outside, game open the whole time. I only needed half a mile to hatch one, but had to walk over one. Not sure why that is. Just hasn't been tracking too accurately for me.
I know, I always leave my phone on... I've heard it was 20km/h but if it is 12km/h would make much more sense. It is still bugged the distance between my house and my pokestop is 1.2km but it only pops up around 300m.
I bought a rubber duck shaped usb battery for touring rides and to charge my bike gps. I used it for this. It died about 15 miles before i got home. Also I caught almost zero Pokemon on the ride because of speed, data, and that there are no Pokemon in rural areas
....am I the only 'murican who has just straight up stopped thinking in miles when I'm playing...? I mean, really, it's not that hard to think in km instead... what used to be half a mile is now a little less than a km... no biggie

This was the first thing I Googled after finding out I really needed to actually walk. Pokemon catches can be found while partner drives with you. Not walk.
As a runner I'm loving this new found gift of telling people yeah I know how far that is its about X to y for reference which is about 3 miles and should take you this amount of time to walk or about 30 minutes of running haha.

Using the Fibonacci sequence is a decently accurate way to convert miles to km. With the lower number representing miles and the one above representing km.
1+1=2
/1+2=3
/2+3=5
/3+5=8
So 3 miles is more or less equal to 5km. 5 miles is around 8km. etc.

Some eggs require that you walk 5 km in order to hatch them. A lot of people in the US aren't familiar with the metric system, so all these US players who have 5 km eggs started googling the conversion to miles. There were enough people doing it to make Google notice.
Of course it doesn't change the fact I can go for a 20 km bike ride and barely hatch a 5km egg... and on top of that, the game is made by idiots that only tracks when the screen is on(well, apparently not even then) so you need to use up all your battery in that time as well.

Not entirely. If 8km = 5mi, and 2km = 1mi, we can approximate 10km to 6mi for game purposes (it's 6.214mi).
Works for all numbers. For example, 63km would be 8km + 21km + 34km for approx. 39mi. (8=5, 21=13, 34=21)

Right, but like I said, that's quite a long series of sums, with plenty of room for error if you're doing it in your head. By the time you get to 34, you're not really gaining anything over just multiplying by 1.6 - or, because you're doing it in your head and just being approximation, multiplying by 1.5.
e.g. 34x1.6 = 34 + (6x34)/10
= 34+(214)/10
= 34+21.4
= 51.4
I don't feel that's any harder than going through 8 steps of the Fibonnacci sequence without making any mistakes.
Also, the approximation isn't great for the low numbers anyway, so you have a trick that's not great for low numbers, and time-consuming and unwieldy for large numbers...

Right, but if it's small numbers, the approximation becomes less exact, and it also only works if your number happens to be in the Fibonacci sequence. For 1 mile, 2 miles, and 3 miles, it's quicker, easier and basically as accurate to multiply by 1.5 in your head. 1 mile is pretty far from 2 kilometres, for instance.
And for 10 km, that number isn't even in the Fibonacci sequence. But if you know that 1 mile is about 3/2 kilometres, than 1 km is 2/3 of a mile, so 10 km is a bit under 7 miles. That seems a lot quicker and simpler than trying to find an approximation in the Fibonacci sequence.

Which is STUPID close to the actual 6.21371 equivalency (not a bit under 7 miles).

5 miles is 8 kilometres by this conversion. 75 is 5x5x3, so 8x5x3 = 120. 75 miles actually equals 120.7 km. Close enough and easier than multiplying 75x1.6.
Anything with a lot of zeros at the end (2000) would absolutely be easier to multiply by 1.6 because you're just moving the decimal a few slaves then multiplying by a small single digit number. What's 7500 miles by that method though? But harder to multiply by 1.6 there, but do the previous calculation and you'll get 12000 km. Actual answer: 12070 km. Fibonnaci sequence is easier for tougher numbers.

Fair enough - I can see how some might find it easier to factor a random number then match one factor to the Fib seq and multiply back up. For my brain, 1.6 is a power of two (with a decimal move), so I double km 4 times and move the decimal. Bingo. Seems easier to me but maybe I'm used to doubling fast and you factor fast. This is where I lost you. I don't do unit conversions by breaking up numbers by their factors. 75x1.6 is easy, and even if you don't think so, nearly every single one of us has a calculator in our pocket (contrary to what my 4th grade teacher told us).
Besides, as an american engineer, I'm constantly converting units with weird as fuck conversion factors. I know by heart that a mile is 1.6 km, a kg is 2.2 lbs, and a fluid ounce is roughly 30 ml. I also know an ounce is roughly 28 grams, but that knowledge is more recreational...

As an American chemist, conversions fucking suck and it's much easier, for me, to do multiplications by factors.
But I think we just kinda stumbled on the issue here. I do mental math by breaking things into small factors, you prefer to do the actual calculation long hand (or with a calculator), so the direct 75x1.6 calculation is easier for you. So I'd say each method is preferable for how we each do the same operation.

A few years back, parents all across america were outraged because of the concept of "common core" math - basically the methodology by which their children were being taught arithmetic.
In a way it was justified, because all of a sudden people with Bachelors degrees or even PhD's could no longer help their 8-year-old child with their math homework.
But I had a few teacher friends who explained to me that it was all regular math, just a different way to process it mentally, and I'm inclined to agree. Kids who grow up on common core can do math just as fast and are able to move on to Algebra and Calculus with no problems.
But goddamn when someone does math like this it still looks like hocus pocus to me.

My wife's a teacher, and the way she's explained it to me is this: the common Core is a great system, but it needed to be rolled out gradually from the bottom up. The way they did it requires kids in 7th grade to "know" things that they would have been taught in 5th grade, except they didn't because obviously the curriculum was different. So that's where a lot of the anger and frustration for the students came from.
I was not taught under the common Core system, in case that wasn't clear from taking about my wife. That's just how I think.

Assuming you already know the sequence, recalling it is trivial, bordering on second nature. Multiplying by .6 isn't difficult, but it will take slightly longer. Again, this is assuming a person already knows the sequence. For the vast majority of people, multiplying is probably faster.

It is easy. Every country switched to metric except Liberia, Myanmar and the US. If the Congo, Sudan an Afghanistan can switch to metric, then so can the US.

Incase serious question, because 100 - 62 = 38. The subtraction is the same idea. Add 8 to 62 to take it to 70. Then add 10 3 times to take it to 100.
When you are dealing with multiplication with decimals it's easier to imagine the original number being increased or decreased by a percentage.

Took me a good 5 seconds to see through the markdown. This is exactly how I do math in my head, but I throw multiples of 5 into the mix, because that's not too bad either, and I don't have to deal with multiples of 3, which makes my brain process the parts that much quicker. I also tend to prefer additions to subtractions, even when it doesn't always make much sense to a lot of people. EG - I'll do 15x+2x for 17x, rather than 20x-3x.

It doesn't, unless you are recalculating the percentage each time which is incorrect. 10% of 100 is 10. 100 - 10 = 90. 90 - 10 = 80. Which is the same as multiplying 100 by 0.8.

You calculate the value of 10% and 8% of the total. Then subtract the value of 10% from the total 3 times. Do the same with the 8%. So it looks like this: 100 * .10 = 10. 100 * .08 = 8. 100 - (3 * 10) = 70. 70 - 8 = 62. The value of "10%" remains constant and does not update with each of the applications of "subtracting 10%"

Go into the settings and enable battery saver. Then turn your phone upside down with the app open. It turns the screen like 99% black. You can then carry it this way or put it in your pocket and just wait for a vibrate (pokemon popped) before pulling it out.

What I understood from your question, is that you want to automate the steps I described in my post (I'm not familiar with Tasker). But in actuality, you don't have to launch the screen locking app every time you want to play. You can just keep it ON, and then lock/unlock your screen whenever you want, which is pretty easy and fast to do IMO (notification panel > lock > tripe tap > unlock > ...).

Why not walk another 30m to the poke stop after that, then 30m to the one after that, then the one after? Plot out a circle route taking in as many as you feel comfortable getting far from your house?
I may be spoiled because I live in a major city (London), and in an area where there are heaps of stops. And it's perfectly safe and possible to just walk about with lots of interesting things to look at. There's even plenty of newsagents I can nip into get a bottle of water, and pubs if I need a pee break, or to sit in the beer garden a bit if there's a gym or lure. The only short route I did was on Sunday and someone had put a bunch of lure's around the stops in the park, so I did a couple of laps of it.

I have an app that tracks my steps and when I walked ~11k steps the other day, it came out to 5.12 miles (8km). I usually figure 1 mile = 20 minutes, so this is a little more than 1.5 hrs of walking which isn't so bad over the course of a day. There are people here doing 20+ km a day.

Because until ~ a hundred years ago it was usual to travel by horse/coach. To show how powerful a car is it was easiest for everyone to relate how many horses would have the same power.
Edit: Just read about it and realized I was wrong. At least a bit. James Watt invented the word horse power around a century earlier. He wanted to sell machines to the industrie where horses were used. It showed how much power is used by an average horse to move a certain object.

It's starting to change. The registration card for Dutch cards makes no mention of horsepower. The engine power is stated in kilo Watt.
In day to day speech though, if you get a new car you're going to boast about its engine by saying how much horsepower it has.

Wood is sold as 2"x4", contractors are uncomfortable with metric, it would just cause such a huge change in the way the industry operates that they dont want to have to go through those growing pains. 2x4s are cut to 2x4 but arr actually less only because of loss from the blade width and shrinkage as the wood dries out. Nominally they start as 2x4. If you want to be an annoying pedant at least do your research. All the sizes of any kinda wood you want are cut at the mill to imperial specs.

After doing a quick google search and why you meant by saying "Yea but thats not the point" I found that it is actually not the point of your comment and is just a measurement which is flawed (no exact conversion, just averages). While in a lot of places it WOULD cost a lot of money, there are a lot of huge projects that certain companies hire Canadian based workers for - mainly on bridges. While we have to relay information using Imperial, whenever we are doing our calculations we use Metric because it's so much easier.

Celsius is better for general use because you don't need that much precision in daily life. Also, each increment in Celsius is the same in Kelvin (0 to 1 in K is the same as -273 to -272 in C).

Most 20-30 year olds are clever enough to just use a US or australian icloud/gmail account so they can download the game anyways. Eh, sources are a bit unclear on that. According to the Wikipedia article, day-to-day measuring in Liberia apparently has already mostly converted, with just the legal status being unclear or something. The only news on Myanmar being in the process of converting are from 2013, so I'd expect them to have finished by now.

I had this idea and shared it in a group of 25 random people playing this game. I said it jokingly, "I regularly run 6-10 miles, I should offer egg hatching services for voluntary donations!" Everyone's head turned, surprisingly, people I don't know, and said, "I'd give you my phone and a gift card if you'd hatch my 10K for me!" Here are people I literally just met willing to entrust their phone to me. I don't think I'll be doing that service (It's likely against the ToS) but it's just fun that this game is bringing people together. Feels like family when you have a group playing.

I just thought it was a common thing even in America. All of the runs/marathons are in kilometers. Maybe I learned that at a young age so I assumed it was common knowledge. I don't know km at all, but 5k/10k were ingrained in my head.

I'm very surprised to hear that since the Olympics have used miles for the Olympics for a long time, and I never once have heard in my life a marathon measured as 40.255 km or whichever it is; I've only heard the 26.2 miles and I've only seen the stickers of 26.2.

That's what I've been telling people all over this thread. The marathon uses miles, as do half marathons (not an Olympic event.) while 5k and 10k and other runs use km.
Sprints also use metric, such as 100m and 400m.
However, my initial comment was that unless you're a runner most Americans aren't familiar with metric because we don't use it. That's all I said before this comment went to a shit show.

For future reference, the game needs to be open and the device needs to be unlocked in order for it to count steps. Lots of people don't realize this.
Also, I read somewhere that if you are moving faster than 12(?)km per hour, it doesn't register your steps. Can't find a source, so take it or leave it.

I find it easier to remember that 1 mi is roughly 1.6km, and 1km is roughly 0.6 miles. The coincidence makes it pretty easy to maths.

I bought a rubber duck shaped usb battery for touring rides and to charge my bike gps. I used it for this. It died about 15 miles before i got home. Also I caught almost zero Pokemon on the ride because of speed, data, and that there are no Pokemon in rural areas

Easy way to remember mile to kilometer ratio is to use Fibonacci's sequence (get's more accurate at larger numbers)
1mil = ~2km (1.609)
2mil = ~3km (3.219)
3mil = ~5km (4.828)
5mil = ~8km (8.047)
8mil = ~13km (12.8748)

You can just multiply by 6 and divide by 10, that will get you pretty close.

Using the Fibonacci sequence is a decently accurate way to convert miles to km. With the lower number representing miles and the one above representing km. 1+1=2 /1+2=3 /2+3=5 /3+5=8 So 3 miles is more or less equal to 5km. 5 miles is around 8km. etc.

Just divide miles by 0.6 and you have it in kilometers. Multiply by kilometers by 0.6 and you have it in miles. Only roughly, of course.

Some eggs require that you walk 5 km in order to hatch them. A lot of people in the US aren't familiar with the metric system, so all these US players who have 5 km eggs started googling the conversion to miles. There were enough people doing it to make Google notice.

Of course it doesn't change the fact I can go for a 20 km bike ride and barely hatch a 5km egg... and on top of that, the game is made by idiots that only tracks when the screen is on(well, apparently not even then) so you need to use up all your battery in that time as well.
