I was more referring to card sleeves since you could do a lot of stuff to mark them and no one would notice.

With regard to painting them, each card would have to be judged individually to determine if the paint is visible on the side of the card since not everyone's craftsmanship will be as good as OP. Additionally it'll make your cards thicker so if not all of your cards are painted then you'll be able to see the thicker cards.

It makes way more sense to ban modified stuff from tournaments.

What about alterations where the only change is the picture of the Pokemon, rather than extending the art far enough to potentially obscure any text on the card? Like, say, changing the Joltik on this card to this.

I suppose having additional ink or paint on a card could lead to cases where players try to mark important cards so they know to draw them.

plain sleeves are harder to mark, if they allowed designed and unique sleeves its easier to hide markings within the design.

Yeah, that's the point. Have an entire deck of alters and an identical unaltered deck. Then if someone can't read the text you can whip out the unaltered one for them to read.

Of course I have no idea how it would work with Trainer Cards, Item Cards, and Energy Cards, as Energy is already fill card art and Trainers and Items have too much text for that to be totally viable for edits...

Magic events have these all the time, but all changes to cards should probably be run by a tournament runner or whatever judge equivalents pokemon has. I only have a couple altered cards, but I bring backup regular copies as well, just in case

In Magic, whether card alters are allowed is up to the individual tournament judge, but most are pretty relaxed about it as long as the card is identifiable and the art is not in bad taste. Generally the rule of thumb is that name and text have to be visible and the cards can't be marked for cheating.

Probably oil-based paint. It lets you get really rich and thick color. A paint that is water based wouldn't really work here.

The two that I have uploaded are here and here. These were my first two cards I'd painted... I'm currently in the process of getting ready to move, so my others are packed away in some box unfortunately! I use watered down FolkArt Paint that you can get pretty much anywhere. I don't take but a few free commissions from my close friends, so I've never invested in really good paints.

edit: I also trade commissions for commissions from others, so if you ever need a magic card, feel free to let me know :)

I love my high end paints but for most things the cheap stuff will work just fine (just not the walmart brand, it's terrible). I do love my golden and liquitex paints for colors I struggle to mix or can't find (looking at you dioxazine purple) in cheaper brands. Oh and white, liquitex white is awesome. There is nothing wrong with affordable paints, especially acrylic since it can dry up in the bottle when you're not looking.

edit: Got wrapped up in talking paint and forgot to mention how much I love your cards! you really captures the style and feel in the second one. I can't tell where the stock art ends and yours begins.

The only thing I hate about these cards are the regulations in tournaments.

They would never allow alterations to the cards, even though they see the god damn attacks are exactly the same.

Who the fuck cares if the card was made 2nd hand and not by the manufacture. They aren't regulated by Nintendo, I'm sure N isn't enforcing physical piracy XD

I never really understood the purpose of altering cards like that, I've seen them on Magic: The Gathering cards too. I admit they look cool, but doesn't that ruin the value of the card itself (whether in play or as a collectible)? Can you still use them? Why not just commission a portrait if you obviously have the ability to do better than the art already on the card?

In MTG, as long as the name of the card is unaltered, the art doesn't misrepresent the card, and the thickness of the card isn't noticeable then the alter is tournament legal. All of this is subject to the discretion of the head judge.

How this affects the value of the card depends on how much the unaltered sells for and the quality / extent of the alteration. Really expensive or rare cards are always devalued by alters, but in general people who commission an alter don't want to sell it.

From what I've read in this thread, pokémon card alters are not legal in tournaments.

That's awesome work. The only critic I have is that the text work could probably be better. I don't know how to solve it but the scratched off paint/background of the original card kinda throws the rest of the art out of wack, IMO.

The Pokemon Company should totally hire the artist to do "full-bleed" cards so they'd have access to the font and be able to overlay it without it "clashing," I'd totally buy a few.

I love the artwork, especially the Bisharp, but I'm curious about your design method.

Why do you have the words "outlined," rather than having the entire text box visible. I'm mostly an MtG player and many of the alters I've seen leave the text box mostly untouched like these (maybe slight overlap with the scenery like this BoP). I feel leaving the text boxes clear of obstruction increases readability and gives it a cleaner look. On the other hand, the ones where you cover the text completely are incredible and if you did a Scrafty one, I'd be tempted to buy it. Again, I'm not bashing your art at all. It's amazing; I'm just curious about your design choice.

Hi there! The text boxes on the pokemon cards are rather big, and more often than not they do not have long descriptions or long names leaving a lot of empty space. It looks really good on the MTG cards, but I just think I can get much more art in when I don't leave the entire text box :) I hope that makes sense!

The art on all of these is fantastic but your signature seems kind of thick/not as delicate and refined as your other paint work. Have you considered using a thin marker to sign your work instead of painting it?

These are really awesome! Just one minor complaint—when scratching off paint to show the card information, you should make the original illustrator credit visible as well. You didn't do all of the work, so should shouldn't get all of the credit.

These look really, really cool. My favorite card art expansions of yours would have to be Torchic, Mudkip, Gengar, Espeon, Buizel, Cloyster, and Lapras. I also like how you expanded some artwork across 2 separate cards, my personal favorites being Arcanine VS Ninetales, Dragonite and Shiny Gardevoir, and Magikarp and Gyarados.

I also liked how on some of them you actually preserved the card's original text while still giving a good look at the rest of the art. Not bad at all.
