The Georgia Aquarium that holds 4 whale sharks and 4 manta rays holds 6.3 million gallons. The glass is 2 feet thick. The tank is so big the whale sharks will swim away and vanish in the gloom.

Here's a high def video of the tank.

Much appreciated, I'm on mobile and was listening to music, but didn't want to pause it to watch.

uprightcaesar · 149 points · Posted at 18:49:55 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

How the hell do you keep your music playing when watching a gif?! Every fucking time I click on a gif it pauses my music/Pandora just like it would had I clicked on a video.

shadow6463 · 154 points · Posted at 19:09:02 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Mine used to do that until a reddit is fun update a couple months ago, assuming you are on mobile

One of the best updates yet

Is that a Reddit browser app? Because I will switch to it just for that.

J_90 · 34 points · Posted at 20:59:13 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yep, so much better than the official app.

RepostResearch · 8 points · Posted at 21:22:17 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

How does it compare to Reddit Sync? I used reddit is fun for ages, but I found it was absolutely destroying my battery life. Saw probably a 20% increase in runtime once I switched to Reddit Sync. This was a year or two back now, so hopefully they've patched it.

pelvicmomentum · 1 points · Posted at 03:17:06 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

Reddit is fun is excellent, you'll get less battery drain if you buy the paid version because it doesn't have ads, and ads drain your battery. Or really you can even get the free version and disable ads and deal with reduced features

I don't have a solution, but i do have some information.

These days when you see a "gif" on reddit, it's usually a new. Gifv file from imgur.

A gifv is essentially a webm, mp4 or other (audio capable) format - which would therefore cause your music to stop when it plays.

However, gifv does not include audio (in order to stay true to the. Gif format)... So maybe there were some updates to acknowledge that and now the music doesn't stop!?

uprightcaesar · 13 points · Posted at 19:45:29 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

That makes sense. But my music still stops. I'm on an iFuck 5C.

I used Alien Blue and it paused my music every time I clicked on a GIF but I switched to Antenna and it only pauses when I play a video. Would recommend.

One of my all-time favorites. The best is showing someone the video on a big hi-res screen with good speakers. That first moment of seeing the tank takes a little breath away.

ed_merckx · 13 points · Posted at 21:01:40 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

if you're scuba certified you can swim with them at the aquarium! If i recall it was a few hundred dollars, but definitely worth it. I think they also have some things where you can snorkel with the fish in the big tank thats cheaper.

DoYouGotDa512s · 2 points · Posted at 22:18:48 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

You can surface swim with them as well with a breathing apparatus. They keep you near the top of the tank and you don't have to be scuba certified. You can hang out with Beluga whales there too. Cool place.

Whudevs · 62 points · Posted at 19:56:48 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

I hope you don't have a ton of comments about this. I'm on mobile so I only see so many.

I got to go behind the scenes and watch them feed the whale sharks in Atlanta. They get in tiny little inflatable rafts with a bucket of the food, and they slowly move along different ropes at the top. The sharks are smart enough they follow their own designated raft. So it looks like 3-4 people in different lanes of an Olympic pool. They slowly move across the pool scooping the food into the water and/or the Shark's mouth.

When the Sharks feed, they stick part of their head and mouth out of the water and you can just see them pulling in massive amounts of water like their mouth is a vortex. And you can't help think if he was a little bigger he could gulp you up without even trying. But they're so gentle and peaceful, like cows.

One of the girls doing the feeding was doing it for the first time. I don't know if you've ever sat in a kayak or little rubber raft, but it'd be pretty unsettling to know if you fall in you're in the water with those guys. They're harmless, I guess, but they're just so big! The girl was a college-aged intern and she was just shrieking and yelping the whole time, every time the shark would nudge her boat or breach close to her. The other feeders were laughing at her but also cheering her on.

That was a day I'll never forget. We drove from Orlando to Atlanta just to see the aquarium. When we were done, we drove back. It was the only reason we made the 7(ish) hour drive. We happened to get into a conversation with a manager there and he treated us like royalty all day long. The Georgia Aquarium is a wonderful place. Thanks for asking your question and letting me relive such a good day.

When I was a kid I was brushing my granny's cow, and it just side-stepped casually because it was getting into the brushing. It bumped into me so hard it knocked me flat on my ass, I'll never forget how much force was behind that thing just moving over.

I grew up on a 90,000 acre cattle ranch. It was dry, rugged country, so we only had about 500 head. They had to be a little ornery to flourish, so you wouldn't want to be in a confined area with them. I've had to learn that lesson many times, haha. We also had a series of poorly behaved family milk cows that would absolutely trample you to get to their bucket of grain. They weren't even malicious, it was just similar to how we think of fallen leaves. When you're a kid, you just bounce off.

I have been bitten many times by hungry orphan calves when the bottle ran dry, and a few times by cows trying to get grain, an apple, etc. But it is the hooves and horns that are the nasty bits.

if you are scuba certified you can swim with them in the tank, I think it was $300 and lasted about 30-45 minutes. I think they have cheaper options where you get to just snorkel or swim.

we got to go behind the scenes some too, the amount of machinery in there to circulate that much water is mind boggling.

You would need more fish than the size of that tank to make it self sustaining.

Do they just throw a variety of feed in the tank and let them fend for themselves? Seems like it'd be tough to feed fish in a tank that big.

Meraki13 · 288 points · Posted at 18:08:33 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)*

Hi! I used to volunteer at the GA Aquarium and while I did not work behind the scenes, I spent a decent amount of time by that exhibit and have talked to a lot of the caretakers.

The whale sharks (there are four of them) and I believe also the manta rays (also four) are fed individually by staff on rafts. There are ropes running across the pool that they use to pull themselves across while dumping food from a scoop into the whale shark's mouth as it follows them. In the wild, the sharks feed by swimming up vertically, but the tank is only about as tall as they will be when fully grown, so instead they were trained to feed horizontally while following their designated raft.

The rest of the fish are fed together. There are pipes running right below the main window (shown in the video) that have holes in them, so they can pump food through that will get dispersed in the water and cause a feeding frenzy right in front of the window.

I took a behind the scenes tour there and they told us the whale sharks follow behind the rafts and gobble the shit up right behind them.

Meraki13 · 23 points · Posted at 20:00:35 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yep! The rafts go back and fourth along the ropes. The woman in the picture is about to get the shark to turn around and follow behind her the other way. Each shark has an assigned spot (which raft they go to). If the wrong shark comes, the staff members have to wait until their specific shark shows up instead.

They have a tub to scoop from filled mainly with krill, but also some other things like supplements. The throat of the whale shark is only about the diameter of a quarter hence why they eat krill and can't eat the other fish in the tank. Any food they miss gets mixed into the water and the rest of the fish get a little excited too. The manta rays start exhibiting feeding behaviors like somersaults through the clouds of krill with their cephalic fins unfurled to funnel food into their mouths!

caveman_rejoice · 3 points · Posted at 21:04:56 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

They're not fully grown yet?! All I can find is that they got them in 2006 and 2007, but I can't find their ages online, do you remember by any chance?

Meraki13 · 10 points · Posted at 21:00:22 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

I'm definitely not the most informed person to answer this, but I'll do my best! As far as I know, we don't know how old they are exactly. They were caught from the wild in Taiwan (some Asian cultures eat them - even call them tofu sharks or something along those lines) when the aquarium acquired them. They were quite a bit smaller then, though still large by normal fish standards, and shipped by UPS in specialized containers.

We really don't know all that much about whale sharks, as very few can be found in aquariums, so really no one knows much about their complete life cycle and at what point they stop growing. The largest known whale shark was 40 feet long, while the Ocean Voyager tank is about 30 feet deep, if I remember correctly. Ours are probably about fully grown, if not already, but they began the horizontal feeding training before shipping them from Taiwan when they were much shorter and could have easily fit vertically. The two females are larger than the males, but are also believed to be older. Whether their greater size is due to age or gender I do not know. Again, I am not a definitive source on all this, just someone who spent a lot of time around people much more knowledgable than me!

One of my favorite things when it comes to trying to study them in the wild is that they repurposed a NASA algorithm for tracking stars in order to track whale sharks! Similar to how pictures of humpback whale flukes are used as a sort of fingerprint to track individuals in a data base, pictures of the "cheeks" of whale sharks are used. However, white spots on a gray background all look pretty much the same, but luckily also look similar to a starry sky! This was a relatively easy way to computerize the "fingerprint" of that area of a whale shark to make tracking wild sharks easier.

summerstorms17 · 1 points · Posted at 02:08:18 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

Wow, thanks for taking the time to post this! By far the most informative response I've ever received on reddit! It fascinating how much we still have to learn about them, I had no idea (and now I have something fabulous to Google at work tomorrow!!). I love the whale sharks in Atlanta, this really makes me want to go back and visit again soon. They are majestic AF to watch, I can't imagine how cool it would be to work with them and the experts who care for them.

Meraki13 · 1 points · Posted at 10:05:27 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

Thank you! I am generally a lurker on Reddit but I love talking about the whale sharks and couldn't resist jumping in to answer some questions. Thank you for being so interested in them! I'm not a very concise person so I love when people are willing to listen to all the things I want to say. They are amazing creatures to watch and learn about. My favorite place was right in front of that window in the morning before anyone else got there - it's mesmerizing.

The people I met at the aquarium were some of the nicest and most interesting I have ever encountered, and were always enthusiastic to talk about the animals and their experiences with them. I definitely recommend going back! If you can, talk to any volunteers or employees that you see, as there is often so much more than meets the eye when it comes to these animals! All around you are people who genuinely love the animals and want to do their best to take care of them as well as emphasize them not just as individuals, but representatives from their species. What we learn from them should be used to help the greater populations in the wild. The Georgia Aquarium is a leader in whale shark research both in Atlanta and the Yucatan peninsula (where many wild whale sharks can be found) and truly has the best intentions.

DerLoladin · 2 points · Posted at 21:06:57 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

What happens to the whale sharks once they are fully grown? While the Aquarium is massive, it seems nowhere near large enough to accomodate such huge creatures. Also, thanks for the insight!

Meraki13 · 4 points · Posted at 21:33:05 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

As far as I know, they will not be moved. This tank itself is 6.3 million gallons (the aquarium as a whole is closer to 10 million) and they are pretty close to, if not already, fully grown now. The whole exhibit was built with the whale sharks in mind.

The tank is also not rectangular - the whale sharks have the tendency to swim in circles but the design of the tank compels them to swim in more of a figure eight pattern that prevents them from building excessive calluses on one side when they rub against the walls.

DerLoladin · 2 points · Posted at 21:44:22 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Thank you for the info. My hope is that they will be able to thrive in such enclosure, even though I doubt it. While I'm no expert it seems so unlikely that such huge creatures could just live (almost) without compromise in captivity.

Phayke · 2 points · Posted at 22:05:13 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Wow, so simply feeding them all somehow makes them cool with each other? That's such a wide variety of fish not trying to kill each other is all I can think.

Meraki13 · 3 points · Posted at 22:20:19 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

There are instances of fish being eaten, especially the smaller, more plentiful ones, but overall it's not an issue. They are well fed, and there are no highly aggressive species in there. Whale sharks and manta rays are filter feeders and incapable of eating most of the fish, and the other sharks (like black tip reef sharks) are much smaller (around 5 ft long). Divers I have talked to often describe the giant grouper as the most aggressive fish in there (they're territorial) and the only one they really have to watch out for. Many fish have symbiotic relationships, too, and the grouper will often sit on the floor with their mouths and gills open for the cleaner wrasse to swim in and eat their parasites and dead skin.

Log_in_Password · 2 points · Posted at 23:11:21 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Are they fed so well that they just don't bother with the other fish in the tank or are they still snacking on some of them in between meals?

Meraki13 · 2 points · Posted at 01:26:24 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

There will always be unintended snacking going on, but it is kept to a minimum. Like I said in another comment, the species in there are not highly aggressive and are all well fed, so it isn't significant. If there are issues with a certain species eating too many others, they will be removed.

laststance · 1 points · Posted at 03:31:45 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

Do they only grow to the size the tank allows, or is the food managed in a way to hinder excessive growth?

Would has there been issues where the whale sharks or mantas trying to eat other animals in the tank? Much like how the Monterey Bay facility had to release its female great white after its appetite grew beyond what the facility could manage.

Meraki13 · 1 points · Posted at 09:42:09 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

The tank was built specifically for the whale sharks, so they still have room to grow. As someone else mentioned, it really is large enough that they can easily disappear into the gloom. Many people are surprised when they see that there are four of them, since most of the time they are too spread apart to be visible together!

Whale sharks and manta rays are both filter feeders, so while their mouths are large in order to scoop up water, the throat of the whale shark is only about the diameter of a quarter. They mainly feed on krill, and are actually incapable of eating the majority of the other fish in there! Also, manta rays are not sting rays (they don't have barbs), so both mantas and whale sharks are quite harmless to humans.

As I said in another comment, the manta rays feed by doing somersaults through clouds of krill. They have cephalic fins that are normally curled up into those points on their heads to be more aerodynamic, but when they feed, they unfurl them and use them to channel large volumes of water through their mouths to be filtered. This video I found on YouTube is a good example of a manta feeding using those fins: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_c7PFsosGSk

kormer · 19 points · Posted at 18:16:49 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

The various fish and sharks would be target fed. Before entering the main tank, they'll be kept in their own pool and over a period of several weeks they're shown a target, typically a flag or other object with a specific size and shape. After seeing the target, they're also given a specific size and type of food.

Each type of animal in the main tank gets a different target and a different food type. For the most part, they stick to what's there's and while there are some losses, most of them leave each other alone.

tiramisucheese · 7 points · Posted at 20:18:51 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yep. If you're in an area populated by rays, people just need to make sure to shuffle walk. Don't step on the back of a ray and all will be good.

I dive weekly in an aquarium (not Georgia) in a habitat with a variety of sting rays. Cow nose are my favorite! We have one that's missing a tail, and she's my best friend haha. She'll do flips for me while I tickle her underbelly.

disgruntled_pedant · 1 points · Posted at 15:19:21 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

We did too!

For those who haven't been, there are other sharks as well, which are presumably bitey. Our dive guide backed into one. She was fine, they keep the sharks well-fed so they're not tempted to get snacky.

They actually said that the most dangerous fish in there were the groupers, and the groupers are e-fucking-normous. They're like 500-600lbs iirc, and if you get too close to them, they will ram you.

Hey! I know it's a bit late to answer this, but I used to volunteer at the Georgia Aquarium and have seen how they are transported.

All four whale sharks came from Taiwan and were shipped by UPS. They were a bit smaller then, but still large by normal standards. They were shipped in specially designed containers that fit them perfectly and had built in life support systems that would keep water constantly flowing through their gills (as with many sharks, they need flowing water or must be swimming to survive). On the plane, they were loaded backwards so that when the plane tipped back during takeoff and landing, they guaranteed that water wouldn't recede and stop covering their heads!

I did a quick googling. Apparently seaworld is doubling their tanks in response to Blackfish. The tanks will hold 10 million gallons where previously they held 5.6 million.

They should replace the glass with transparent aluminum.

SnakeyesX · 2 points · Posted at 21:13:05 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Fun Science Fact:

The thickness of the glass does not depend on how much water is being held in, it depends on how deep the water is, and the impact forces expected.

Imagine building a little 4 inch high dam out of sticks and mud on the beach. as long as you don't have huge waves, that dam will not need to be any thicker than a similar counterpart holding just a few gallons of water, despite holding back the entire ocean at 352 quintillion gallons.

Whale sharks are known for swimming large distances - One specimen was tracked 8,000 miles across the Pacific. I'm pretty sure this tank is far too small for a whale shark. Try an ocean, that may just be big enough for one

These whale sharks were saved from cullings/killing fields in thailand (where it is now illegal). Had the aquarium not bought them they would have been killed for eating.

60cm (~2 ft). There is an example in the aquarium you can touch.

The large acrylic window through which this impressive scene is displayed measures 8.2m in height, 22.5m in width, and is 60cm thick.

Of course you could have just watched Star Trek. Too bad Scotty was in San Francisco and not Okinawa.
Addendum: The aquarium states the glass is made of multiple layers of acrylic board fused together.

ChiefBigGay · 1 points · Posted at 05:47:22 on May 25, 2016 · (Permalink)

How about you be less hostile and use your brain. Here's a comment from a fellow redditor below:

So we see here the tanks aren't even tall enough to house these whale sharks when they go vertical. If that doesn't tickle your fancy.

Here's a blip on killer whales: How far do the Southern Resident pods travel?

Southern Resident Killer Whales travel an average of 75 miles (120 kilometers) a day. They are capable of sustaining an average speed of over 6 knots (8 miles per hour/12.87 km per hour) for long periods of time and can go as fast as 30 miles per hour (48 km per hour) for short periods. Small Transient pods and large Southern Resident pods are always in constant motion; socializing, foraging, feeding, resting, playing or just traveling. In the spring, summer and fall the Southern Residents spend most of their time in the inland waters of Washington State and southwestern British Columbia. In the winter, they expand their distribution to the Pacific coast, traveling as far south as Monterey Bay, California and as far north as Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands), British Columbia. In 2007, L pod was photographed as far north Alaska. As with most marine mammals, their movements are determined by their food source. For the Southern Residents, this means following the salmon returning to the Fraser River in British Columbia every summer. In the winter, when Chinook salmon are less abundant, they must expand their range to find food.

These fish travel farther in an hour or two than these tanks are long. They can't physically hold a whale traveling full speed for two hours at a time and the whale can't even go any sort of vertical to flip around.

These aquariums they are held in is like sticking you in a closet and telling you that you're living the rest of your life there. But explaining this to you is pointless because proper adults have already seen that the captivity of whales is at its end.

Whales aren't sharks, Einstein.

And, AGAIN...

No. So just shut the fuck up.

You are incredibly dense. Congratulations you are incapable of reading facts.

ChiefBigGay · 0 points · Posted at 02:10:05 on May 26, 2016 · (Permalink)

I also used whales as an example because whale sharks are more akin to a whale than a shark, Einstein.

http://blog.afd.org.au/uncategorized/plight-of-the-captive-whale-shark/

Whale sharks, like dolphins, travel long distances in the wild – up to 34 kilometres a day. They are also deeply submerged in their environment, swimming as low as 10 meters below sea level. Unsurprisingly, aquariums do not meet the natural needs of whale sharks. The Environment and Animal Society of Taiwan exposed the size of a tank for a whale shark kept in an aquarium in Pingtung County, Taiwan, as a mere 12 by 33 meters long; making the tank akin to a ‘jail cell’ for the whale shark. Shockingly, the Society found the shark would circle the small area up to 576 times during opening hours – slowly going mad with tedium. - See more at: http://blog.afd.org.au/uncategorized/plight-of-the-captive-whale-shark/#sthash.jY8tBYcG.dpuf

And there's your answer of how many miles they log in the aquariums. So shut the fuck up.

I also forgot to mention, if OP is talking about oceanic whales, I would wager that while cleaning their feces is a more difficult endeavor due to their larger size, it's still much safer than cleaning shark feces. Sharks are more dangerous sea beasts and being in a cage with them is much riskier. Thank you.

I'd take my chances with a whale shark over a whale most days, it might just be a perception, but I get the sense they're too busy trying to eat to bother with you at all. Whales seem a bit more cunning.

I don't know, there have been some horror stories at WalMart on Black Friday when the shoppers are all in a frenzy.

If we had one of those hypothetical "what would you rather" questions, and one choice was cleaning a shark cage and the other was trying to obtain a deal at walmart on black friday. Well, I'd have to think about it a bit.

I don't know much about this but it looks like maybe it embedded itself in its flesh over time from the constant abrasive friction mixed with the constant forward motion from the shark. It could've grown around it, too. But as soon as it was cut, it loosened, so maybe not.

These giant aquariums use Huuuuuugggeee "foam fractionators" to skim most of the poop from the water. Home hobbyists know them as protein skimmers, and must clean the stinky little collection cups regularly. The collection cups on whale shark enclosures are ROOM SIZED and must be cleaned by wading through the muck with hoses and floor squeegees.

Actually I'm a photo retoucher of 25 years and your auto adjustment did a great job. I played with the original for a few seconds in photoshop and the histogram is so crushed into the blues that it is very hard to get any better color than your corrected shot. In fact photoshop is adding more noise than your result so you have a pretty good filter there. (BTW this is way more than adjusting white balance. You are adjusting the entire range here)

RotorHeadz · 16 points · Posted at 16:57:57 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

What is causing all those red edges and dots? That's the only reason I don't think it looks good. I can't unsee those

BMWbill · 24 points · Posted at 17:34:49 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

The image I force-expanded the color on had even more red dots than this one. What we are seeing is a very narrow histogram expanded to the full spectrum. Colors seem to appear where there were only shades of blue. Those colors were slightly there hidden in hues of blue. However, there are some noise artifacts in the image that were very subtle in the original but were then accentuated vastly with the super expansion of this narrow histogram. For whatever reason they were pushed to the red hues. You could easily put a selective color layer over it to desaturate the reds which would take care of that instantly.

Skinjacker · 5 points · Posted at 20:51:49 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

There are all almost no reds in the original photo. The auto-tone process looks at the histogram for each colour channel and tries to adjust the black point and white point to match the histogram, e.g. below for green.

http://i.imgur.com/jShcd0R.jpg

This works fine for most photos, which will have at least some of each colour throughout the tonal range. But in this case, the red channel has almost nothing in it, as seen below.

http://i.imgur.com/CYsNJEn.jpg

The algorithm tries to squish this down incorrectly, not knowing what the reds are "supposed" to look like because of the incredibly sparse histogram, which is likely what's leading to the red artifacts.

Hi and apologies for hijacking your comment to ask a question.

I'm a amateur photographer and have struggled to pick up photoshop retouching skills. Do you have a favourite tip or resource that might help me improve my photoshop skills? If it's simply a matter of practice makes perfect that's ok, I'll pick up my camera today and shoot something interesting to practice on.

Cheers!

BMWbill · 3 points · Posted at 21:18:53 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

You already knew the answer! There is no one tip nor any single resource that will help you. At least not compared to practice and time. There are many menus and tools in photoshop but I find that if you understand color theory and you have any kind of art experience like drawing, sketching, or painting, that can easily be applied to your photoshop skill set. I started with Photoshop 2.0 on a grayscale monitor back when color monitors were new and expensive. There were no classes back then and today I say you don't need any classes. Now you have a resource I never had- Youtube. Anything you want to do in photoshop can be found as a DIY on youtube.

Coming up with ideas on what to DO with photoshop is harder than using the app, in my opinion. Lucky for me, as a retoucher, I don't have to design. Art directors or clients tell me what they want done. Then I just have to figure out how to do it.

Thank you very much! Your encouraging words have turned out to be exactly what I've needed though hadn't realised until reading them. For a while now I've been stuck in a bit of a skill rut and had lost perspective over how many powerful tools are at my disposal to learn new tips and tricks. Now I feel encouraged to dive into YouTube and try out a few different tutorials. If they don't work out I'm only out a bit of time and know what doesn't work, if they do work I've up skilled. It's win win.

Just applying Photoshop's "Auto Tone" gets you basically all the way there with this photo.

BMWbill · 1 points · Posted at 21:36:20 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

hey that's right. In fact it does a better job reducing artifacts than the Gimp filter used by the guy above.

Funny because I was playing with curves and levels and Hue Sat and not getting nearly this close. That Auto Tone is pretty amazing. Way smarter than the old auto color CMND-SFT-B.

PM_ME_FUN_STORIES · 1 points · Posted at 21:41:54 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

You mention photoshop, what version do you use? Or is it a different program?

I'm asking because I'd like to get something I could use to touch up my photos outside of the program that came with my camera (which only has basics like exposure, white balance, and color boosting).

BMWbill · 2 points · Posted at 22:49:53 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

I use the most recent version for work and I use CS6 at home because I hate cloud based subscription monthly payments.

I can't recommend photoshop anymore for the casual home user. There are much cheaper apps out there for what you want to do.

Yeah it did a lot more than white balance. Whatever you used, it did a really nice job. I've been editing photos for years and could not get that good of a result. I usually avoid taking photos of aquariums because I know it probably won't turn out well, I think I've changed my mind now.

I'm a volunteer SCUBA diver at the Georgia Aquarium where we have 4 whale sharks of our own. Along with manta rays, sting rays, other sharks, and a 5-foot sea turtle. Surprisingly, the only one who's curious is the sea turtle who thinks our cleaning rags are lettuce. Saw a tug-of-war happen with another diver once but the turtle conceded.

Whale sharks ARE enormous. The Okinawa and Atlanta tanks are two of the biggest in the world. I'm pretty sure they were #1 and #2 in size up until a couple years ago. I've been to both aquariums and they are both absolutely amazing.

Yeah, we had a male green sea turtle who was an outright asshole.

Probably my scariest encounter with him was when he wanted to pummel a shark for whatever reason and chased it full speed through the tank, zipping over me by a couple/few feet when I was scrubbing algae. The pressure flattened me to the substrate. People don't realize how incredibly fast those 500+ lbs monsters can be when they want.

babylon-pride · 10 points · Posted at 14:34:05 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

They actually do have teeth - 300 to 350 rows of tiny, tiny teeth. They're too small to really harm a person but they're there.

Here's a picture, but like I said, super small. They aren't really used for chewing or anything.

If you live near any zoos and/or aquariums, check out their websites to see if they have any volunteering opportunities. Many zoos and aquariums also offer internships - usually you need to be in college or already have a Bachelor degree for this. Some also have "junior curator" positions for high school students, if you happen to still be in high school. Either way, building up as much experience as you can will help you the most. I think it can also be a good idea to look at sites with job listings (the Association for Zoos and Aquariums is a good one). This can help you get an idea of what you'll need in order to be hired in the future. Hope this helps!

I worked at Seaworld for nine years and used to watch the divers clean the aquarium. They would put a huge net in the water to keep the sharks away from them. One morning while I was in there doing a show check I saw that the net had a giant hole in it and the sharks were swimming closer and closer to it. Pretty sure the diver wasn't attacked though.

Fun fact, hydrostatic pressure doesn't care how wide the container is, only how deep. If you're in a tank 20' deep and it's 2' wide, same pressure on you're 20' down in a 200' wide tank.

1p hours to fly there from mainland? Where were you flying from, the kuril islands?

dejayc · 1 points · Posted at 14:34:43 on June 3, 2016 · (Permalink)

I took the train from Shinjuku to Narita (~40 mins), a flight from Narita airport in Tokyo to Naha airport in Okinawa (~3 hours), a bus from Naha to Churaumi (~1.5 hours), and about 5 hours of waiting in between trains / airports / buses / taxis. In total, the whole trip took 10 hours. I got there late a night, stayed in a hotel, visited the aquarium when it opened as the very first visitor, got some great uninterrupted footage of the Kuroshio Sea tank (with the whale sharks), hung out there for a few hours, and turned around and spent 10 hours getting back to Tokyo.

Whale sharks in the wild have a lifespan similar to us. Perhaps longer.

In captivity they're lucky to reach 25.

It's too difficult to recreate the ocean conditions with nutrients and a large area for them to filter water. This whale may look beautiful but swimming around that aquarium is killing it.

The guy in there is actually a guy I met at the aquarium this morning, before I made the picture. I guess to get his job you got to have, a good understanding of the behaviour of sealife, your divemaster degree, some balls of steel. Although the wale sharks don't eat humans, there are alot of stingrays and sharks in there as well, that could cause some trouble. The aquarium is indeed located at Kuroshio sea.

OPs wife just left him for a more handsome and wealthy guy. His kids started calling mommys new boyfriend dad. OP spends his days going over photo albums from his failed marriage. One day he stumbles upon a picture from a vacation he took in Japan. He thinks to himself "If she can be happy, so can I... i'll show her," so he proceeds to reddit, makes a interesting title, attaches his photo, and waits for the karma. He promptly writes his ex wife an email title "Look at what you let go of." It's a screen shot of his karma. His wife sues him, for the photo was her property as she was the one that took it. She sues him for everything he's got, which isn't much. Now OP is homeless. He lives from couch to couch of any person kind enough to let him stay a few days. He could get a job, but he kinda smells since he doesn't get to shower often. He has 3 kids, but they all have restraining orders against him since he kept showing up to their schools to try to impress them with his Reddit Karma. "Look at this kids, over 5 thousand upvotes. Does Brad have that?" OP spends the rest of his days wallowing in self pitty. He gained some weight and now has man boobs. He is considering suicide. He builds a gallow, but when he does a dry run his weight breaks it in half. He wallows so hard, he creates an alternative account on Reddit, called gallowboob.

fluffyballofdeath · 9 points · Posted at 15:25:10 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Do you really need to be a DiveMaster for that? An open water diver should be fit for doing that! I'd love to do that for a living. I doubt the sharks have any interest in nom'ing you guys. Keep up the great work :)

bearmanthing · 10 points · Posted at 16:30:50 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

For the aquarium I dive at, you have to have a rescue certification. All the DSOs there have instructor as well. Depending on the aquarium, you'll also be trained up on a bunch of different methods of diving: hookah/surface supplied, FFM, scrubber, lots.

HubristicHomarus · 1 points · Posted at 16:30:51 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah, I'd think diving in there would be pretty straightforward and nothing that someone with an open water certification couldn't handle. You're diving in a freaking aquarium lol and I'm sure the depth isn't anything that would require any technical training.

TheSteelPhantom · 1 points · Posted at 17:13:53 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Depth isn't the only concern when diving though. As someone else commented, many aquariums require Rescue at the very least. What do you do if another diver that isn't you has something happen to them?

Everyday Open Water doesn't go into anything more than "loan them your octopus and go up slowly", and that's just if they're out of air and signal to you...

[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 18:03:47 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah I imagine you'd want to know how to help someone in that situation. When I was doing the end of my open cert. we were at the bottom of this frigid quarry. We were going through some obstacles while we waited for others to finish and it was so cold my partners reg froze! Definitely didn't expect to have to use my octopus then, but made it to the top safely regardless. Now I miss diving.

I have a friend who just came back from visiting Japan. She said while she was in Tokyo she visited an aquarium. While there she noticed there was these strange signs all over the place. She asked a friend to translate it for her and it said "Please don't eat the exhibits." You might laugh at that, but if we don't start to check our own obesity problem we might have to put up the same sign at petting zoos. "It's a menagerie people, not a fuckin smorgasbord." The funny thing about the aquarium try to imagine the same sign is hanging in front of a whale tank. "Keep an eye on that one, Akashi, I think he's trying to smuggle in a harpoon under his jacket."

I went to this aquarium last year when I visited Japan. It was really amazing to see such huge whale sharks like the one in OPs photo. I don't know much about aquatic life, but I loved the place. The grounds are beautiful as well, so you could really kill a whole day there. I'd love to go back someday (unlikely).

I'm sorry, but keeping an animal of that size in a perpex box is just cruelty. Its considered wrong to keep a dog locked in a house all day, keeping a 9 meter animal in cage like that is cruelty. And they don't even have the excuse of "conservation", because most of them die within 18 months.

I have an obsession for spotted garden eels, and nearly shat myself when I saw a bunch in one of the tiny tanks. I love them so much, I even got a leather bracelet with them and my name engraved at the gift shop.

Please do an AMA!

How much does one make cleaning whale shit

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 22:00:45 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

I know it's a job where you clean whale shit and the implication is that it's not a very glamorous job but it actually sounds really bad ass. I would love to dive and work underwater around giant aquatic animals. I work as a paramedic and deal with death, injury and sickness on a daily basis and tend to wonder what other career fields would be enjoyable. Is it a cool job OP?

Edit: I literally posted this less than a minute ago. Why is it getting downvoted? It's a legit question.

It's been awesome and not at all what I expected lol. There's a lot of night life is you're into that and Disneyland was pretty neat too. We did a lot of just walking around stumbling into weird and wonderful places and finding food places that for some reason let us keep eating even though we didn't speak any Japanese and were probably eating it entirely wrong. Everyone is super nice and wants to help tourists even if it's out of their way. 7/11's are everywhere and the biggest life saver. It's the only ATM that let us take money out, free Wi-Fi for Google maps when we were horribly lost plus they have food and usually really helpful people and free area or train maps. We also did a few days in South Korea and took the ferry over cause the flight was cheaper and with the ferry it ended up being around the same cost. South Korea is pretty awesome too. There's so much more to do here than I expected. Hopefully you get to visit soon!

Whale sharks are filter eaters, much like Humpback Whales.

Pluvialis · 4 points · Posted at 13:49:59 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

It's a whale shark. They're like blue whales: they just eat plankton and little things.

I went there in 2005! Still the most incredible aquarium I've seen. Do they still show off the dolphins dick during the dolphin show?

Whale sharks are not a dangerous as a whale or a shark. About as threatening as one of those giant balloons at a parade. Sure theres risk, but it's not from the shark being an asshole.

Any funny stories when you were in the shit?

Is whale shit especially bad, I imagine whale shit is especially bad...

FirstStealth9 · -2 points · Posted at 18:50:31 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

I really don't want to be that guy but aquariums are just as awful as zoos. It's just taking massive aquatic animals who can move thousands of miles across the ocean and shoving them in a tiny fish take all in the name of cheap thrills. Does it raise awareness about these species? Sure. But there are so many better ways to teach kids about the importance of our oceans.

Shichoe · -2 points · Posted at 20:57:12 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)

Japan, what a disgusting place. Whale sharks and cetaceans don't belong in tanks. Nor should any be slaughtered.

jrwn · 2 points · Posted at 21:07:17 on May 24, 2016 · (Permalink)
