For the curious, I put together a process gif of this piece[1]. It was a huuuuge struggle for me (for whatever reason) and went through much more major changes than usual. But I got there eventually. :)

Between screens 4 and 5, the "mer-dude" moves slightly farther away from view, and shifts to the right...It's such a subtle change, yet I'm sure it was made with complete artistic discretion. Why, in your professional opinion, was it important to move that "mer-dude" in the finalization of the image?

As a fellow illustrator, I'm wondering what made you feel like you needed to change the ground elements so many times. The big whale creature went through a few different iterations, but I feel like that would've been way easier than changing up the background (and foreground) elements that much. Were they just not feeling right, or did you have actual compositional reasons for it?

Whoa, you're the "how I became an artist" RISD / fantasy art guy? Neat!

I love this piece... your earlier takes make it much more creature-like, but the current one is ambiguously rock-ish. The mer-peoples look a lot like kelp plants too. Were you trying to go for a more subtle ambiguous look here?

I really want to see more like his; more huge creature stuff.

Gorgeous, man. The figures in particular have a great feeling of movement. I'm starting to begin to learn new techniques for my own work and hopefully be able to develop it into a career. Great piece. Just read your blog post on your journey in becoming an artist. Was very inspiring and I am at a point in my life where finding motivation is not necessarily easy.
