instead of pixelating, try copying similar terrain from the picture and adding it to the spot you cut an element from. If it looks way too obvious copy, try rotating the new coverlayer. A good way to hide sharp edges on coverup is blurring the edges.

If you're using Photoshop try using the 'Clone Stamp tool', shortcut 'S', it works wonders if used correctly!

Try working around with size + hardness, you use the 'alt' key to mark the spot you wanna clone... so f.ex. if you'd click on one spot and then move a few pixels to the side and start dragging to the right you'd start by copying the spot you selected and it would then follow from that point onwards cloning.

There is a clone tool with gimp and it work wonders. Actually, the most useful tools of photoshop are present in gimp. The bandaid tool in gimp(nothing like the one in photoshop) is a buffed up clone tool for covering missing spaces.
