Minimise the browser because my 3rd generation Celeron and 4GB of RAM can support two browsers, each with 8 tabs (some sites, some ads) across 4 windows, 10 windows explorers, 3 of which are on My Computer, Solitaire, Picasa, and a match 3 game

Title-text: I once worked on a friend's dad's computer. He had the hard drive divided into six partitions, C: through J:, with a 'Documents' directory tree on each one. Each new file appeared to be saved to a partition at random. I knew enough not to ask.

You forgot the part where they grab the edge of the browser window and drag it back into the field of view because it, for no sensible reason, had been dragged to the side until only a sliver remained visible.

Pfft that's beginner stuff. Personally I put on roller skates and slide my mouse across the bar I built in my house to turn 180 degrees. I am able to do this because I virtually never use this bar due to the fact that nobody comes over. Like seriously I'm fucking lonely. Some one help me. After a good match tough I just treat myself to a shot of whiskey or two. If my aim sucks I do that too, it doesn't really matter.

I'm in my first semester so all of my classes are still super basic stuff. One of them is basically "How to Use Microsoft Office" and this poor lady, who I later found out was 59, got lost in how to save after the professor managed to detail out like fifteen steps. She's super sweet though, likes to bring in candies for the class and stuff.
[deleted] ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 04:06:19 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
How do you extend saving to 15 steps?
Click on File
Click on Save
Type a file name
Click on Save
Done
I really can't get more detailed than that (this is probably why I'm not a teacher)
This could be it. I'm pretty tech savvy but I get really confused when a teacher is using software I'm unfamiliar with and is using hotkeys left and right. Even if they say it out loud it's easier for me to just know where to go in the drop down menus at first and then learn the hotkeys later. I would hope that ctrl s for save would be safe to use though.
vhexs ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 23:36:12 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's not always Ctrl+S. In Unreal Engine 4, Ctrl+S creates something you don't always want to have. It was a bitch to get used to.
That's a good point. It's those kind of situations that make sticking to the drop down menu at first really important. Plus usually the hot keys are next to the item in the drop down menu so if you use the drop down menu enough you'll know the hotkeys eventually too.
Yeah, when i record some screencast i try to avoid shortcuts, even if i could use some key visualizer, because IMO it is easier to follow what is going on with the mouse.
You are right, my generation consists of people that are too retarded to use a PC and use a mobile phone instead. Its actually frightening how a phone makes people dumber, using a Windows PC is still an important skill
Shit's worked fine for twenty years and will continue to work. There's always another way. Some people like to have holy wars over them, like the preference for tabs or spaces.
Why? Spaces are always the same. You develop a muscle memory pretty quick. Tabs? Not always the same.
Edit: a word
Geotan00 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:09:44 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
But tab size can be customized for anyone's liking, they take less presses to indent multiple times, and they take up less space. The only reason I use spaces is to align multiple lines of arguments.
Anyntay ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 01:09:39 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I don't trust myself to actually save with hot keys even if it's always worked before
I dont want to one up you. I dont want be "that guy"...
My ITE 115 Professor. In college. Taught a class of 30 students that the way to use "Find and Replace" in Microsoft Word to replace the whole word "is" to "our" so it would not change "this" to "thour"............ Was to add spaces before and after " is "
Use "Whole Word Match" Regex option that has existed since 1996? Oh no...
Yeah that was two weeks ago. I am STILL upset over it. She teaches Intro to Computers, and is one of the programming professors.
That's a valuable tip, though. Sometimes you don't have whole-word-matching and have to get creative instead. And the further you go down the programming chain, the less likely it is that you do have it. She's probably already used to just doing it manually.

Absolutely like doing a search in a browser or something else with less advanced option. I know all about word boundary with regex and all the other options but hitting the space bar before and after a word is easier and more importantly quicker.

50% people don't want to learn and would rather be stubborn and slow than admit there's a better way to do it.
I automated a workload at my office which literally cuts down a certain every day job time by 90%, they refused because my script will cause them to do something at the end of the month.
We're talking about overall reduction from a few hours to a couple minutes.
[deleted] ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 00:21:04 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
It's 50% googling issues customers could easily resolve themselfs.
Then you just copy+paste pre-made answers to either stall for time (make them have to respond, removes then from cue) or you copy+paste the obvious answer to their question.
Sometimes you can even copy+paste their literal question to you in google and the top result is the solution.
Surprinslgy often.
maybe 25% of the job is dealing actual issues they couldn't resolve on their own, and 25% is actual RMA-related issues and the like.
Well Yeh you only get idiots calling cs. Anybody who knows anything about computers and has a real problem, knows that asking customer support is usually pointless because all they do is give out copy paste answers. They just learn to fix it on their own. So you never even get any interesting problems to solve either... You know the kind that make you feel like a boss when you solve it after digging through forums.
yea it's a real bummer, I thought I was gonna be helping people with problems.
Maybe 1/50 cases you get is something like that tho, it can feel rewarding I guess, it's good if you hate manual labor :)

Another problem is that they hire people who have no idea how to do anything other than turn on a toaster. Makes me less likely to contact customer support if my nerdiness doesn't eventually get exhausted.
Another thing that pisses me off is that even if I write a well-documented, detailed description of the symptoms, background info, and my attempts to fix it -- Stack Overflow format -- I get some dumbass copy paste reply which obviously does not even apply to my problem.
How do you even get a job as IT? I'm more tech savvy then most people I know and already Google just about everything, I might as well get paid to do it.
Depends. Some jobs such as cyber security will require that. However Tier 1 jobs usually do not require much prior education and/or experience. Tier 1 is your Help Desk, Desktop Support, and *sometimes internal security (managing Active Directory.) Although it certainly does help in the interviews.
Oh, and like the person above me said, sometimes you gotta fake it til you make it.
Not entirely true. I always look for a "Google" answer when I interview people. I'm at the point where I'll take someone who admits they are great at Google over someone who has a degree. I wish I was joking.

On paper im under qual'd for my current job. The other candidate had me beat in creds and experience on paper. The hiring manager chose me because when he asked what some off the wall HP printer error meant and how i would correct it i told him. "I dont waste my time memorizing obscure errors, i would just google the error and check HPs trouble shooting guide. If that doesn't work i would pull any tech manuals and search for similar issues."
He said he appreciated the honestly and not bullshitting on stupid errors, also that's what he would do.
1RedOne ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:17:43 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Everyone's first IT job should be a help desk job at a company. Try to find a tier 1 help desk job at a local company.
You do NOT want to do remote phone support for remote users. Supporting on premises users is the way to go.
I worked tier 1 help desk for about a year and a half, got promoted to sysadmin and did that for a year and a half. After I became pretty good with two or three products, I went into consulting for those and the sky is the limit.
I'd do it again too! So, to begin, look for a tier 1 or 2 help desk job. Google everything, be willing and happy to learn and look for opportunities to script and automate things.

I actually open google.com instead of doing a "search bar search engine search" mainly because of habit, but also that I get to think of the search terms I use while Google is loading. I admit I also sometimes leave some unattended tabs of Google, without a search term entered, when I go back to some other tab and I forgot that I need to search for something. Then when I find those tabs again I try to recall the search terms and either end up having a sigh of relief for recalling, closing the tab as I realize I do not anymore need to search stuff, or getting annoyed at myself for completely forgetting.
I took an A+ exam YEARS ago. Maybe like 15 years ago. One of the questions was to navigate to a specific page.
I highlighted the address did ctrl+c then ctrl+v in the address field and then enter. I failed.
The test wanted: highlight address in field press delete. Highlight address in document. Edit and copy. Click the address field, edit paste. Click go button.
As Somebody who's been in college and done lots of training in many corporate environments. it isn't about doing it the right or wrong way it's about doing it "their way" and everything else.
The other problem is that the people creating the tests are not the people doing the job, or even qualified educators. We have a whole "learning and development" team at my work, and their only qualifications are unaccredited day seminars. Their work is as you'd expect.
pomodois ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:19:33 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The software i use at work was entirely upgraded some months ago. I was given several courses with tests which worked like that. They became memory and trial & error tests.
I love it when I see someone learn a new hotkey. Its like introducing them to Rick and Morty.
I showed someone "Windows + L" the other day who went the ctrl-alt-del method to lock their screen. They didn't know that the windows key had any shortcuts and thought it was just a hard start button.
Windows+D excited them more than I would have expected.
Why even bother doing that? At this point, if someone posts a webpage on reddit and it isn't hyperlinked, I just double-click the text, then click and drag it into the tab bar.
Jackoosh ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:19:47 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Less mouse movements = faster basically. It's what hotkeys were made for
Most people relate someone being tech illiterate to them being old, but me being in high school, I can tell you first hand none of these kids know shit about computers or any software. Though they know how to work an iPhone.
I've been substitute teaching for two years and I can say first hand that this generation's computer literacy is actually worse.
One time I was subbing a bunch of sixth graders who were familiar with school issued tablets. I was teaching keyboarding and part of that day's assignment was that students had to edit a basic image in Microsoft Paint and insert it into Word. But first they had to copy and paste from the Internet. Not rocket science but appropriately leveled for sixth graders.
As I was helping students out, I noticed that many of them only had one program out at a time. Either it was Word, Paint or Internet Explorer. Eventually my curiosity got the best of me and I asked one student if I could just observe them to see what was up.
Sure enough, all of the students would close out of each program ENTIRELY before opening up new ones. They had no idea that you could open up several programs at a time due to their experience with tablets. I was completely baffled. These were kids that had been using these computers in this class for at least five weeks. It was really sobering.
I want to be sad, I really do, but these kids are nothing more than job security for me.
Nikalus ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 02:23:19 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
that's because if you're "good with computers" you're automatically labelled a nerd in high school. me for example, i wasn't your typical nerd, smokin weed and skating all the time, but was the group nerd cause i actually troubleshoot my computer issues n whatnot.
I take a computers class that teacches you how to type, use all microsoft programs(word, excel, powerpoint, etc) because I already knew how to do all this stuff so it's an easy A. Seeing so many people using the finger poke style of typing disgusts me.
A lot of the students do this. I've subbed them several times so eventually I just showed them how I type quickly because I use . I had one of them tell a story and then I typed it on the projector for them to watch. They were pretty impressed and it got a lot of them to try using the home row.
I've gamed for a long ass time, so my left hand naturally rests on wasd. From there my right hand flies off the mouse and fucks around in the right half of the keyboard hitting whatever's needed. My left hand sits around making minimal but still notable movements. Not at an actual keyboard rn so I can't really tell in detail.
I half finger type, i dont use "proper etiquitte" but like my hands move around the keyboard like for example I nearly never use my pinkies because they're way slower and my ring fingers can usually move to where the pinky needs to be faster than the pinky can press the key. Is this bad?
What ever works best for you works best for you. All typing classes try to say "this finger only goes to these keys even if it gives you horrible cramps"
Even then for me it just doesnt seem worth all the effort and typing so slow for a while just to increase wpm by a little.
That's actually really interesting. Something I've never thought about. If kids are being introduced to computing with smart phones and tablets, they're never experiencing software where more than 1 program is open at a time.
Poor bastards. I can't live without 2 screens now because I always have so much stuff open. I can't imagine doing half the stuff I do with one thing open at a time.

It's funny, I'm 19, and I can see the bell curve of computer literacy. Right now, 20 to 30 is a pretty decent sweet spot for knowing computer stuff. It's not super common, but way more than 30+ or 20-.
My family constantly talks about how my generation is "tech savvy" meanwhile I can go to school and watch so many people failing at even simple computer tasks.

In another life i was a network and system admin in the Marines. Now I'm a Business Analytics and Information Systems Major in the final semester of my undergraduate program. I have to take a general business capstone course where im teamed up with students from other majors and we run a simulated business. Since all of the analytical tasks are completed by the program the simulation runs in, i churn out on the fly reports and projections while we are planning for each round of the simulation.
Even other business majors are not great with excel. Idk what the fuck they are teaching people before they get to college, but its not to think algorithmicly.

but its not to think algorithmicly
You're goddamn right. I'm 19 now and my primary complaint is that public schooling is primarily teaching you how to regurgitate information, now. It's all about what to think and not how to think, and definitely not how to think critically or logically. Great, everyone can pass their standardized testing now, but are they capable of going to a real college course and actually learning stuff?
This may be shocking, but it's because some people just don't have an interest in computers.
You get out of work/school, go home and maybe play some games to relax. Oh you stumbled on a problem with your computer? You fix it.
On the other hand maybe they go home, text Monica, play some angry birds and the thought of a computer never crosses their mind.
Then you have other people who like playing games but don't really care about the workings of a computer (me).
That being said, things change, and when they do the best thing you can do is offer help, and understand that different people know different things.
Like I said - I never really gave much of a shit about how computers actually work, but I'm at the point where I want a better gaming experience, so I'm going to build one. Step one was accepting my own ignorance and step two was asking my friends for information who know what they're talking about.
We can't know it all, but we can share what we know when people ask.
Exactly. There are millions of kids that are interested in computers.
zer0t3ch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:35:16 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Even if you aren't interested, the first step to learning is the desire to learn. Even though it doesn't interest you, you desired to learn and hence you learned. On the flipside, people will say shit like "Why isn't this working" and then go glassy-eyed when you actually try to explain any ounce of the problem. They don't want to learn at all, they want it to be fixed and don't give a fuck. It's not just apathy, it's complete lethargy.
Depends how you teach though. You have to remember that if you understand more about the subject, some things you might think are basic are pretty complicated.
zer0t3ch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:39:29 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Oh, no doubt. That said, someone that cares about knowing how it broke and how to fix it next time will still ask further questions where needed. I personally am abysmal at teaching, but even in classrooms with good teachers I see stupid people who just don't care.

I once had to explain that you had to turn the monitor on in addition to the desktop to a kid in one of my classes. They didn't know this because they grew up with Mac AIOs and literally associated Windows with slow and Mac with fast.
The whole reason iPhone and apple is successful is because their products just work. There's hardly anything to set up, all you do is sign in and start downloading app store apps. When someone chooses android they do need to know their way around the system and how to change different settings.

Well from that point of view, hell would actually be a place where the devil teaches you all the hotkeys used in emacs and Stallman watches you break your fingers while eating peeled off scab from his foot. ;)
Learning the hotkeys and stuff in ProTools/other audio workstations made me hate working on music or sound design with someone who doesn't care to learn them. It seriously increased my productivity in the studio (or in game, or in literally anything else, even Chrome) like 250% and that's not an exaggeration

AutoHotKey is your friend. You can bind any command or key sequence to any key combination on your keyboard, with any program running. With compact keyboards you can bind Win+F1-12, because those keys are almost never used.
Like I said though it's not really possible. Most of my keys are already hotkeys because of the keyboards design. All the missing keys on the layout are secondary bindings to physical keys. Take a long time to get used to but having a smaller keyboard is really nice. Especially when playing with a HOTAS which was why I got it but then it kind of stuck around and now it's my daily driver.
Shame because I have some really nice and rare keyboards but they are too large for me now.
That is probably more confusing. Something like a this shows a 40% without trying to explain why all the alphas line up and where the space bar went. Of course it raises more questions like how do you do anything with one fn key and all that wasted space taken up by that space bar.
auron_py ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:48:47 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Damn, i would miss every key press on that layout.
It's really nice. Trust me. It took me a month to get used to it properly but now I can't go back. Normal keybaords are just too big.
I used to take the piss out of people without the numpad but when I got into flight sims I needed a smaller keyboard so I got this then I couldn't be bothered to change keybaords all the time so now I just use this. They aren't a very popular layout because they are a little inconvenient especially in some simulator games like Arma when you need the numpad and stuff like that but I make do.
It's still no dirty console controller and has plenty of keys+secondary functions.

How else are we supposed to play Rocket League (and other games alike)? With our keyboards? So we can lose against everyone else who uses a controller?
PCMR loves controllers. You're supposed to. After all, PCMR is all about options, options, options, right?
I use a 360 controller for emulating Nintendo games, mainly Pokemon. It's OK but it's frankly a pile of shit, PS1 controllers are where it was at then they made them chunky for no reason. A controller is a device that does everything but none of them very well.
A mouse and keyboard is a bit like that but it's no the greatest for racing or flying in but does everything else really well. That's why we play PC because we can get a wheel or a flight stick to make up for our lack of flying and driving capabilities.
Your keyboard looks amazing! One question though, why do you need a smaller keyboard for flight sims? Dont you just use a flight stick or a yolk (is that how you spell it?) to control the plane?
You can do that but if you're using a HOTAS where you have a flight stick and throttle separate from one another and they are big you want your arms straight not too far apart. Also keybaords are pretty essential for space flight sims because you need all the buttons you can get.
I used to play Elite Dangerous a lot and plan to play other space sim games when they come out like Star Citizen. Going to wait for it though not buying in now because that's just stupid. Especially sean as though it might never actually get finished or come out.
Still have them you just have to hold down "fn" and any of the keys on 1/3rd of the right side of the keyboard. For example Y is calculated, and your arrow keys are O;lk. With practice you can probably get just as fast as you don't have to move your fingers as far. And when you feel really lazy you can press any of the keys with one hand.
I can't survive without layers on a keyboard. I don't like taking my fingers off home row for arrow keys and macros. I use an Ergodox and a Preonic (or my Pok3r when I'm feeling fancy).
As someone who used to use a very similar keyboard (KBP V60 Mini) and got frustrated with the layout, I strongly recommend the Noppoo Choc Mini. One more column wide & one more row tall, but everything is right there along with a Fn-layer numpad if you want it. The Keycool Hero works too, but it's not available on Amazon with Prime shipping like the Choc is.

Here is a list of all hotkeys/shortcuts I use. Some are only for specific programs. I will probably make much more detailed post about these when I'm not being lazy. But you can ask me now if you're not sure about something.
Edit: Oops, forgot ALT + F4, of course...

Just the other day I had to show someone ctrl+c to copy something in Windows10.... shudders
Me when someone claims to be good at Photoshop and have no idea what they're doing, what shortcuts does what and what hotkeys does this. It's frustrating to watch.
Grimord ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:06:20 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I work on Excel half my time and I use hotkeys for everything, but every time someone wants to show me something or ask for help it agonizes me. They insist on dragging their mouse allllll across the range to select instead of using ctrl+A, for instance, or even a whole line instead of using shift+space or just clicking on the edge... And don't even get me started on how everyone seems to not know the End and Home and buttons even exist...
Level21 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:57:06 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Oh my god, when I see Windows and/or GNOME users in general.
Or when people do things like change mouse acceleration settings or resolution or network connexions with some dialogue window instead of the command line, the horror.
Or when I see people browse the internet using the mouse, oh my goood.
Matora ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:56:08 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
This is me in my 3D animation class when the lecturer is explaining Photoshop to the rest of the class, I've been using it for years so I already know the stuff he's going on about but he gets it all done so slowly ;-;
I've just never seen the need for hot keys in something that's not a game. I understand why people use them, but I don't feel the need.
1RedOne ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:25:18 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The need is to do things quickly.
Maybe you're OK with being slow and inefficient, but if you'd like to be better and faster at a thing, learning hot keys will make you much, much, much faster.

How to look up a word, by my parents
Open document
Click and drag scroll bar, skim to find the word
Highlight word
Right click
Copy
Minimise document
Minimise like 5 more windows that are open for no reason
Uncover browser
Open new window
Not Google
Type 'google.com' in the Google search bar
Pass over Google search bar
Click on link to Google home page
Right click
Paste
Search
Minimise the browser because my 3rd generation Celeron and 4GB of RAM can support two browsers, each with 8 tabs (some sites, some ads) across 4 windows, 10 windows explorers, 3 of which are on My Computer, Solitaire, Picasa, and a match 3 game

Click on File Click on Save
Type a file name
Click on Save
Done
I really can't get more detailed than that (this is probably why I'm not a teacher)
ljackstar ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 04:48:45 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Pumpernickel_Bread ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 23:21:39 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Pumpernickel_Bread ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 23:45:58 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's a good point. It's those kind of situations that make sticking to the drop down menu at first really important. Plus usually the hot keys are next to the item in the drop down menu so if you use the drop down menu enough you'll know the hotkeys eventually too.
OurSuiGeneris ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:34:12 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Shit's worked fine for twenty years and will continue to work. There's always another way. Some people like to have holy wars over them, like the preference for tabs or spaces.
Tip: It's spaces.
Pyroarcher99 ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 01:21:59 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Wait, people actually indent with spaces? I thought it was a myth, I mean, WHY
wildcarde815 ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 01:51:35 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There's even editors that will swap a tab for X spaces so you can have consistently correct indenting. Also its important in languages like Python.
k1tt3hk4t ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:03:18 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Double spacing is the github default, and I think it looks better than tab. Less whitespace means more room for complex code and comments.
Spread_Liberally ยท -5 points ยท Posted at 01:35:23 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

She teaches Intro to Computers, and is one of the programming professors.
throwaway79328749223 ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 23:29:06 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's a valuable tip, though. Sometimes you don't have whole-word-matching and have to get creative instead. And the further you go down the programming chain, the less likely it is that you do have it. She's probably already used to just doing it manually.
zial ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 00:08:21 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Absolutely like doing a search in a browser or something else with less advanced option. I know all about word boundary with regex and all the other options but hitting the space bar before and after a word is easier and more importantly quicker.

Sometimes you can even copy+paste their literal question to you in google and the top result is the solution. Surprinslgy often.
maybe 25% of the job is dealing actual issues they couldn't resolve on their own, and 25% is actual RMA-related issues and the like.
It's a mind boggling waste of time and resources.

Another problem is that they hire people who have no idea how to do anything other than turn on a toaster. Makes me less likely to contact customer support if my nerdiness doesn't eventually get exhausted.
Another thing that pisses me off is that even if I write a well-documented, detailed description of the symptoms, background info, and my attempts to fix it -- Stack Overflow format -- I get some dumbass copy paste reply which obviously does not even apply to my problem.

buildertommy25 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:17:05 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
You apply for it like any other job.
Basically you need a good cv or something that stands out so you can get an interview, from there just lay it out in person.
But you shouldn't say you are good with google, the person hiring likes to think their staff is competent and smart.
Just lie like everyone else, say you have multiple years of building computers and trouble shooting software etc even if you don't.

I just never see IT jobs advertised and when I do it always requires either some form of experience in the field or a relevant degree of some sort.
ThatITguy2015 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:12:25 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Most people relate someone being tech illiterate to them being old, but me being in high school, I can tell you first hand none of these kids know shit about computers or any software. Though they know how to work an iPhone.
CJtheWriter ยท 70 points ยท Posted at 23:16:44 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It was really sobering.
brokenbentou ยท 46 points ยท Posted at 23:56:39 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

that's because if you're "good with computers" you're automatically labelled a nerd in high school. me for example, i wasn't your typical nerd, smokin weed and skating all the time, but was the group nerd cause i actually troubleshoot my computer issues n whatnot.

I take a computers class that teacches you how to type, use all microsoft programs(word, excel, powerpoint, etc) because I already knew how to do all this stuff so it's an easy A. Seeing so many people using the finger poke style of typing disgusts me.
CJtheWriter ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 23:53:38 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
A lot of the students do this. I've subbed them several times so eventually I just showed them how I type quickly because I use . I had one of them tell a story and then I typed it on the projector for them to watch. They were pretty impressed and it got a lot of them to try using the home row.

huh, wasd typing? so do you move from the wasd position initially to various keys?
XenithTheCompetent ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 03:26:56 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I've gamed for a long ass time, so my left hand naturally rests on wasd. From there my right hand flies off the mouse and fucks around in the right half of the keyboard hitting whatever's needed. My left hand sits around making minimal but still notable movements. Not at an actual keyboard rn so I can't really tell in detail.
thisguyhasaname ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:51:39 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I half finger type, i dont use "proper etiquitte" but like my hands move around the keyboard like for example I nearly never use my pinkies because they're way slower and my ring fingers can usually move to where the pinky needs to be faster than the pinky can press the key. Is this bad?
QuinceDaPence ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:57:35 on October 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
What ever works best for you works best for you. All typing classes try to say "this finger only goes to these keys even if it gives you horrible cramps"
Even then for me it just doesnt seem worth all the effort and typing so slow for a while just to increase wpm by a little.

MalHeartsNutmeg ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 00:37:26 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
HououinKyouma1 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:31:32 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

zer0t3ch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:35:16 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Even if you aren't interested, the first step to learning is the desire to learn. Even though it doesn't interest you, you desired to learn and hence you learned. On the flipside, people will say shit like "Why isn't this working" and then go glassy-eyed when you actually try to explain any ounce of the problem. They don't want to learn at all, they want it to be fixed and don't give a fuck. It's not just apathy, it's complete lethargy.
MalHeartsNutmeg ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:36:40 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Depends how you teach though. You have to remember that if you understand more about the subject, some things you might think are basic are pretty complicated.

Oh, no doubt. That said, someone that cares about knowing how it broke and how to fix it next time will still ask further questions where needed. I personally am abysmal at teaching, but even in classrooms with good teachers I see stupid people who just don't care.

First you have to enter command mode, then type :wq for saving and exiting, :q! for exiting without saving, or ZZ for saving and exiting.

Learning the hotkeys and stuff in ProTools/other audio workstations made me hate working on music or sound design with someone who doesn't care to learn them. It seriously increased my productivity in the studio (or in game, or in literally anything else, even Chrome) like 250% and that's not an exaggeration

I had a colleague doing level 2 IT with me some time back. Now don't get me wrong, this guy was a true friend and an awesome guy. He was actually my best man at my wedding...but...
He never used the shift key. He would caps lock, press the key for the letter then un caps-lock.

I don;t use hot-keys. Just right-click. But then my keyboard isn't really hot-key friendly as it's an Ultra Compact mechanical keyboard.

somegetit ยท 32 points ยท Posted at 18:11:42 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
AutoHotKey is your friend. You can bind any command or key sequence to any key combination on your keyboard, with any program running. With compact keyboards you can bind Win+F1-12, because those keys are almost never used.
kuddlesworth9419 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 19:07:49 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Temido2222 ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 20:31:18 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
WHY, I'd understand a 10 keyless or even a 60%, but that keyboard is so small. Why?
chromosome47 ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 22:01:04 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
but, that is a 60% board.
Temido2222 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:02:07 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I thought it was a 40%
RedZaturn ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 22:56:41 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
A 40% is just letters and a tiny space bar with a button on either side of the space bar to change between layers.
example
EDIT: This is an example of an ortholinear 40% keyboard, not a regular 40%
voiderest ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:26:51 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That is probably more confusing. Something like a this shows a 40% without trying to explain why all the alphas line up and where the space bar went. Of course it raises more questions like how do you do anything with one fn key and all that wasted space taken up by that space bar.
auron_py ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:48:47 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Damn, i would miss every key press on that layout.
Also, fuck ergonomics.
kuddlesworth9419 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:50:19 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
AimShot ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 23:03:03 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
"dirty console controller"
A true PCMR does not shit on console peripherals.
A true PCMR uses whatever he wants to use on his PC.

this
How else are we supposed to play Rocket League (and other games alike)? With our keyboards? So we can lose against everyone else who uses a controller?
PCMR loves controllers. You're supposed to. After all, PCMR is all about options, options, options, right?
kuddlesworth9419 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:01:55 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Superlazer5 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:24:14 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Your keyboard looks amazing! One question though, why do you need a smaller keyboard for flight sims? Dont you just use a flight stick or a yolk (is that how you spell it?) to control the plane?
kuddlesworth9419 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:31:51 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Especially sean as though it might never actually get finished or come out.
killchain ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:53:21 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Why would it be not hotkey friendly? What software are you using? Are all its shortcuts mapped to the F row?
kuddlesworth9419 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:58:15 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
No all the secondary functions are already taking up most of the keyboard adding anymore will make things very complicated.

kuddlesworth9419 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:05:28 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Still have them you just have to hold down "fn" and any of the keys on 1/3rd of the right side of the keyboard. For example Y is calculated, and your arrow keys are O;lk. With practice you can probably get just as fast as you don't have to move your fingers as far. And when you feel really lazy you can press any of the keys with one hand.
manwith4names ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:24:33 on October 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I can't survive without layers on a keyboard. I don't like taking my fingers off home row for arrow keys and macros. I use an Ergodox and a Preonic (or my Pok3r when I'm feeling fancy).
concavecat ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:52:37 on October 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
As someone who used to use a very similar keyboard (KBP V60 Mini) and got frustrated with the layout, I strongly recommend the Noppoo Choc Mini. One more column wide & one more row tall, but everything is right there along with a Fn-layer numpad if you want it. The Keycool Hero works too, but it's not available on Amazon with Prime shipping like the Choc is.

They insist on dragging their mouse allllll across the range to select instead of using ctrl+A, for instance, or even a whole line instead of using shift+space or just clicking on the edge... And don't even get me started on how everyone seems to not know the End and Home and buttons even exist...
