It was never boring for me. I would "capture" other kids, grab them and pull them into my clothes rack, where I would slit their throat with my sharpened thumb nail, then proceed to eat their liver. Got a lot of good nutrition that way. Things were ruined when the manager found a dozen kid's bones in one of the racks, and the police were called out.

Coolbeanz7 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:40:34 on June 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I used to look at the department store as a maze that I could purposefully get myself lost in so that I could keep myself occupied by trying to find my way back again. EDIT I literally drew myself a map when I visited my Dad at work (IBM: massive official type building.) I recall one of the checkpoints being some creepy ass taxidermy.

Reminds me of when I cracked my head...

When I was 5 and living in Miami my parents took my sister and I to the mall. We go to a clothing store like the picture above and my mom starts to rifle through some items, while my mom is occupied my sister and I begin to play tag and as I am chasing her, another girl around the same age starts to play with us. I start to chase the girl, she weaves in and out of the rack of clothes, I follow and as I exit I run head first into that big beige column.

Instantly I am blacked out for a few seconds, when I opened my eyes, I was surrounded by people with a pool of blood around me and blood dripping from my head. I see the girl walk away with her mom scolding her.

I end up in a hospital getting stitches, 1 year later, my family moves to Canada and I begin school, who's the first person I see as I walk into class? The girl my sister and I were playing tag with in Miami.

Always loved hiding in these until one day when I got accosted by a woman who worked there saying if I didn't stop she was going to kick me out of the store and call the police. That's a pretty harsh thing to hear when you're like 7-years-old, or whatever young age I was at the time. Stopped all together after that; childhood ruined. Thanks lady.

jenybluth ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 16:48:05 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

LetsShareAPaopuFruit ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:13:58 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, but kids going into the center of clothing racks and not misplacing anything doesn't bother me. If they were to, it wouldn't be a big deal. I'm doing mindless manual work wether or not they do that. Lets me have an excuse not to talk to customers.

TH3_GR3G ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 15:12:24 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I remember once I was at the clothing store with my mother and hid in one with pants on it to just mess around (although they were straight rather than circular). While I was just sitting there this older guy comes up and starts looking through and is making his way towards where I was. Faced with either being caught or making my escape I chose escape. When I stood up and hurried off I looked back at him and the confusion on his face was priceless.

[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 20:29:49 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I don't know if it's an everywhere store or a local store, but we have a Burlington's Coat Factory here (department store) that my younger brother and I used to always get drug to as kids.

We would go through all of the insides of these, take whatever we found on the floor, and then use it at home later for our action figure fights.

My button a.k.a. landmine armaments were intense after a long shopping day.

I did this once in the late 80s with my dad at Walmart. He freaked out and got store security because when he called my name I didn't come out. When they found me, he grabbed my arm and pulled me to the car. Some little old lady followed him because he was so mad (really he was more terrified somebody had taken me.) She told him she wanted to make sure he didn't beat me. My dad stopped turned to her and said "if you don't mind your own damn business you'll be next" he didn't spank me or anything we just went home. But I never hid in the clothes racks again.

That's a good sign you were ready to be fully potty trained. When kids start wanting "privacy" that means they're forming an understanding of what they're doing and have actually developed the tools they need to detect when they have to go. And you we're probably in pull-ups because you would still have accidents. Easier to change a dirty pull-up than an entire outfit.

None of us got abducted, so I think maybe that was just something a parent told her.

GraceAndMayhem ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:54:41 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Must be. We're all working with anecdotal evidence, but I'm pretty sure hiding in small spaces and being sneaky is universally appealing to all children.

BBA935 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 15:37:45 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Wait what?!?!? How?!?!? I use to do this. How would a girl get abducted? If you are hiding in those things, it's odd anyone would find you. I get the worry, but in the 70's and 80's boys were getting raped like crazy too.

I'm not calling bullshit, but I'm interested in a more detailed explanation to why she thinks this.

Okay so when I was very young (born in '89, so early 90s), I was a troublemaker apparently, and my parents tried one of those child-leash things for the first, and last, time in a department store with these racks.

According to my dad, I went and ran to hide and play in one of these racks (as I was wont to do), and I was on the leash, and apparently I got completely tangled myself in the rack, and the store security had to come and it took about 10 minutes for them to free me.

According to my dad, that was the last time they ever tried the child leash on me.

I just lay down on the floor and screamed until my mum took it off. I'm still proud of toddler me for winning that battle. Knowing my luck though, if I had complied she probably would have used it until I was far too old for it and I already looked a few years older then I was.

Had to post again forgot to add a story :-) a few years back I was shopping at a department store, now a fully grown up person, and I parted a rack of shirts and there was a little kid standing there all big eyed staring back at me. I couldn't help but laugh and just smiled and closed the close back up leaving him there lol! So very many times I hid like that and very rarely was I found. Just cracked me up to see that kid standing there, he had to be like 5-6 yrs old. I knew just how he felt

rabidpeacock ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:37:53 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I fell asleep hiding in one of those. Parents were furious and relieved. I blame them. They spent hours shopping how can they expect a kid not to get bored.

Zanki ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:14:24 on June 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I know right! Mum would take me shopping every single week. Same routine. Get there, get a MacDonalds, go to the toy store so I could get a cheap Matchbox/Hot Wheels car then it was time for mum to shop for a good couple of hours. Of cause kid me got bored and thought hiding in the clothes racks was fun. Shame they don't have them like that anymore in the UK. I loved them, but I guess stores got rid of them for a good reason, kids.

There were these two little kids playing tag in a store I worked in years ago. Apart from me they were the only ones up there and I was quite happy to let them play as long as they didn't go too wild and hurt themselves. I remember what it was like being a bored kid shopping. I was giving them hints were the other was hiding and somehow I became part of their game as they used me as den. Their dad wasn't very impressed when he caught them but they cheered me up (awful job) and I talked to their dad for a while. Nice family.

Fun story, I hid in these and my mom thought I was kidnapped. There are plain clothes officers that work at Target and I guess that were looking for me. They almost locked the store down!

But I wanted some of that sweet Target popcorn so I came out

Zanki ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:09:12 on June 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Mum called security on me when I was eight or nine. I used to sit in the kids shoe area of the store and just play on my Gameboy. One week they had moved the section so naturally I just went to look for where they moved it. It wasn't far away and I just sat down where I had told my mum I would be. She goes to find me and I had my headphones in, playing on my Gameboy and I heard a faint call but didn't think much of it. A few minutes later I see a security guard run past me. No big deal, then I heard the your in trouble yell of my name over my headphones. I got up and wandered over to where I had heard her. Man, she was pissed at me for not being where I should have been. I told her I was exactly where I said I was, the section had just moved. Not a good excuse according to her. Turns out she had the entire store looking for me, hadn't bothered to ask them where the section was now though. My days of sitting while she went clothes shopping were over for a while.

My mom and my aunt finally learned to stop dragging my cousin and me out shopping every damn weekend. We would hide and not respond to them, turn off the escalators (little red button), and make paperclip guns with rubber bands and shoot people in the asses when they bent over for items.

I learned at a young age that rebelling was a great way to protest things I hated being forced to do.

TrumpPaul2016 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:35:19 on June 19, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I did this in a Florida department store when I was little (around 5 or6). The entire circular top was solid glass. Needless to say I toppled it over and the entire glass circle almost landed on top of me. Probably would have done some serious damage.

Omg i did that every single time my mom went shopping. Never ran into any other kids in there :-) m mom would get so mad cause she'd find me by hearing some lady get scared when she parted the clothes and saw me standing there. I'd also crawl into the bottom of the displays, when they had those sliding doors below for extra stock. Good to see someone else was just as goofy. I still hate shopping and as a woman that's kinda weird. Thanks for the memories!

The first couple of times it scared me to death - I was convinced he'd been kidnapped of course. Which he thought was the funniest thing ever, the little shit. I should have sold him to those gypsies like I wanted to but his mom wouldn't let me. dammit.

That was simply the best part of shopping. Especially the resale stores! They choice of fabrics and designs were much superior to retail stores, which made it much more fun.

At that point I was scared shitless of what was going on, so I just continued to hide in one of those. I think it was about 10-20 minutes to they found me. My parents owned retail shops in the 80s and my little brother and I would play in those clothing racks. I liked hiding in them and jumping out to scare customers. One of our stores had a creepy attic full of mannequins. My brother and I used to dare each other to stay locked in there as long as we could. I still have the occasional nightmare about it 30 years later.

I did that once when I wanted to go to the toy section and my mum wouldn't let me. She did the "I'm leaving now" thing and I didn't follow. I then get lost and can't find her. So smart guy me goes out to the car park to wait at the car.

Can't find the car.

So super smart me decides they have left me there and I decide to walk the 10km home. I get home a couple of hours later to find the cops there and my mum freaking out that I'd been abducted. I was not a smart child.

My twin brother and I were kept on leashes when we were 2 or 3, but we learned how to let each other out.

We got out one time and they had to lock down an entire JCPenney to find us.

We were hiding underneath clothes racks "playing hide and go seek".

Zanki ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:59:58 on June 20, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I could escape my push chair at that age and I would hide inside the racks as well. Used to drive my mum insane. I remember using my fingers and little nails to get myself out.

Mum likes to tell this story and I have vague memories of it. We were in a clothes store and I vanished. When she eventually found me I was inside a clothing rack with another little boy and we both had lolly pops. She guessed the other kid had given it to me. She used to get so mad at me over it but I was just a little kid and escaping her was my main objective at that age. She attempted to use a leash on me once. She told me I lay face down on the floor and just screamed until she took it off. Zanki 1, Mum 0! Good to know I was just a normal bored kid though.
