As a kid, I loved the format and found it actually conducive to learning.

My SO bought me a bunch of these last year for my birthday! I still love them

I honestly had a flashback to younger times from that intro

The intro started playing in my head the minute I saw the thread title. Not even this comment chain, the thread title.

So did I.

Yes! I loved the Eyewitness series when I was little.

Edit: I found the view from the room with a view gif on the Eyewitness Horse. Here it is.

yodamaster103 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:20:19 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Martin Sheen?

Hyro22 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:56:00 on April 6, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

mindroverjpc ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 02:15:06 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I loved the African throwing knives that just had half a dozen blades sticking out at random angles.

"Guys, this knife just doesn't seem dangerous enough. What if I throw it at someone but the blade doesn't hit the guy?"

"Well what if we add another blade over here in case the first one misses?"

"Genius! But then what if that blade misses too?"

"Well..."

Oborawatabinost1396 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 03:31:21 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Right, when I was in middle school this book would be the only one I would ever check out and at one point the librarian asked if wanted it.

Anyone remember the CD ROM / games that they made too? I seem to remember one in a Dinosaur Museum where you had to find their bones. So cool :)

-WISCONSIN- ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 01:08:16 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Holy shit, I thought I was the only one who ever played that. Then when you fully collected a dinosaur skeleton, a living dinosaur of that species would roam around the museum mysteriously.

Crespyl ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 03:53:44 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oh man, I saw the video in the other comment, and nostalgiad so hard I wasn't sure if I was imagining things. The Wikipedia article on Eyewitness only seemed to talk about the TV series, which I don't remember having seen, but I definitely recall getting a copy of one of the DK Eyewitness games and exploring the museum with the flutes.

I thought I might have been conflating it with the copy of Encarta we got around the same time. I hadn't thought about that stuff in ages.

Next up, did anyone else spend too much time playing with the voice synthesizer in Encarta?

britishcactus ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 08:10:46 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oh my YES! I loved the voice synthesiserโ€ฆ probably if I was to look back at it now I'd be surprised at how mediocre the whole thing was - but damn if I didn't waste a lot of time on those montages.

CWinter85 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 19:59:21 on March 28, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I've checked out the weather one so many times in my middle school. I was the only one that signed it out for weeks. I had a fascination with tornados and still do want to see one so bad in person. I wonder if 20 years later if my name/initials are still in that book

dilligafdilligas ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:29:36 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Thought that was going to be a clip from the movie twister which I've see. Hundreds of times and found a few mistakes in the movie. But I'd do anything to be there in person

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:37:29 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oh no. The real deal is much scarier.

First, you'll hear an eerie, hairs-stand-up-on-your-neck silence and all the birds will get quiet, then there's a calm, followed by the sound of a train coming which means the tornado is very close to you and you won't have much time to seek shelter.

lumpy_cats ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:19:57 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Public librarian checking in. These books are still in print and super popular with the kiddos. I suggest you go on your library's online catalog and request a few. Even as an adult, I still think they're very cool.

Cheibrodos ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 03:22:23 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

These things were great. I had bad asthma as a kid and when I was at daycare I would have to go sit in the office at the front to do my breathing treatment (which is basically vaporizing medicine and misting it at you) for fifteen minutes. It would have been miserable had that office not had a big set of the Eyewitness books I could read.

Taste_of_Space ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:34:35 on March 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Man I fucking loved that exact book, still remember some of the names like the crowbill war pick and Sharp's Derringer. Was also pretty stoked to visit the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford and realise quite a few of the weapons from the book are actually in there.

Someone just donated boxes of these to the library I work at! Unfortunately they were all from 1990 or so and couldn't be put in the collection but me and the other employees were nostalging hard.

Oh shit, I remember these too.. but, at first I thought you were talking about I Spy books. I was thinking, "No, don't remember reading them, but definitely stared at them for hours."

Rocks and minerals and the underwater animals were my favorites

I spent hundreds of hours with these books.

I have that exact same book on top of my stack in my bookcase. I left them out for my four year old to get into when she is ready. I don't have many but they were great books. I loved the format and illustration/layout style.

My old school library had (what felt like) the whole collection and I always loved picking out a random book and reading through it!

My school library actually has a bunch of these sitting on a forgotten corner of the science section. I dont think people reed them often.

I saw one at a garage sale once and the topic was sex and it was pretty graphic, not like a sex ed book. I guess they weren't all made for kids lol

Eyewitness is still the best brand for travel guides.

What is this doing in Nostalgia? I still read Eyewitness books. Hell, they only started publishing them in 1988. This isn't exactly old stuff.
