I told my parents I liked this book in 3rd grade or whatever, and they ended up buying me the Wayside book where you had to add letters together. I stopped talking to them after that.
I bought this one and the sequel and read them to my class of 5 and 6 year olds and they were a hit. These were the only books I've ever seen those kids listen to all the way through even though there was only one illustration per story.
And they're still awesome IMO, 20 years after first hearing them read to me.
There were three! I have the trilogy sitting on my bookshelf now that I picked up at a used book store for a couple of dollars. I've read them all so many times. They remain amazing!
They've aged very well! I bought the first one for my goddaughter last Christmas, and had to read her the first dozen or so stories. You don't have to be afraid of that. :)

These books had a huge influence on my sense of humor as a kid. When I started teaching I was really glad to see they're still super popular with kids.

Thanks! I have been thinking about that story randomly for YEARS and couldn't figure out what it was from and no one ever knew what I was talking about, I was starting to think I hallucinated it all.
It always reminds of how people have their own scent and smell like their houses, but you can't smell your own house. If that makes sense.
