ahh the clash of cultures, the juxtaposition between urban and suburban lmao

juxtaposition

wow great word.

edit: i dont mind the downvotes, but to clarify - i wasn't being sarcastic.. i had to look the word up, i thought it was neat.

TheSleepyBuffalo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:30:11 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You've...never heard the word juxtaposition?

SomethingSeth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:22:44 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Isn't life funny? Amazing how different our day to day vocabulary can be.

breisdor ยท 39 points ยท Posted at 04:15:41 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

If I ever get a tattoo, it will be a potato because of this book.

Epidemilk ยท -11 points ยท Posted at 12:22:19 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You might be missing the point then.. as I remember, the class general reaction was that it was stupid, and the kid just shrugs it off and says "I like potatoes."

Good story for all the usual dogshit Reddit comments about tattoos

breisdor ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 13:25:51 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Oh, I thought that was the point.

Epidemilk ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 20:44:50 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Only if you like potatoes!

StayPuffGoomba ยท 38 points ยท Posted at 01:53:51 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This is the first book I read my class every year. Then they proceed to fight over it and the sequels. Suckers! I got you loving to read, take that!

futuramadan ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 05:30:19 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Louis Sachar came to my elementary school and signed books for us. It was a great day! Still have them.

Mine, too! It was a great day to be a 5th grader.

Sephian ยท 36 points ยท Posted at 23:36:25 on August 2, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I told my parents I liked this book in 3rd grade or whatever, and they ended up buying me the Wayside book where you had to add letters together. I stopped talking to them after that.

LeopoldTheLlama ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 14:16:45 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I LOVED the puzzle book! I want to find a copy of it now as an adult...

kimilu ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 16:07:19 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That sounds pretty spoiled tbh.

DevsiK ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 18:56:55 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Do you understand how a joke works ?

hugitoutguys ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 02:49:41 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I thought these were hilarious. I sort of want to read them again but I'm scared they won't be as funny as I remember.

belleslettres ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 05:23:57 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I was rereading some of these earlier today, and I still think they're brilliant. Maybe even more so from an adult perspective.

smilesbot ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:50:00 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Shh, it's okay. Drink some cocoa! :)

IAMARainbowAMA ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:56:06 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I bought this one and the sequel and read them to my class of 5 and 6 year olds and they were a hit. These were the only books I've ever seen those kids listen to all the way through even though there was only one illustration per story.

And they're still awesome IMO, 20 years after first hearing them read to me.

red_lantern ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:27:02 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

There were three! I have the trilogy sitting on my bookshelf now that I picked up at a used book store for a couple of dollars. I've read them all so many times. They remain amazing!

feminaprovita ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:28:03 on August 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

They've aged very well! I bought the first one for my goddaughter last Christmas, and had to read her the first dozen or so stories. You don't have to be afraid of that. :)

sarcasmismyfriend ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 01:13:52 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I loved these when I was younger. I'm reading this series to my 7 year old son for bedtime stories. He loves them.

Expellionas ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 01:49:14 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Ah, old book smell.

Faithfulhumanity ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 03:33:02 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I guess that's where this show got their idea? http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/614tTabraQL.jpg

Complete with tall school http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/wayside/images/4/44/Wayside_School_Cartoon.PNG/revision/latest?cb=20150406143157

It was still oddly hilarious for a kids show.

alecsteven6 ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 04:20:52 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, the show was actually based on the books.

zjbrickbrick ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:32:15 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Does it actually live up to the books? Unfortunately I think I may already know the answer to that.

SquidwardGhost ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:51:00 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I saw a couple episodes and couldn't really get into it as much as I loved the books.

Mr_Funsucker ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:12:09 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Why didn't I know this exists?!

HornlessUnicorn ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 01:43:39 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

I read these every few years! Still good as an adult!

PenysEnvi ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:52:25 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Me, too!

Tinyds ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 02:10:59 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I thought that Sideway Stories was okay as a kid to be honest, but Holes is one of my favorite books of all time.

TheCurseOfJamesDolan ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 03:19:59 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm the opposite. As a kid, I loved the Wayside School books and was excited for Holes when it came out -- Sachar must have been the first author whose work I followed. I liked Holes, I enjoyed Holes, I even liked the movie, but it never matched the insanity/fun of Wayside.

I credit the Wayside books greatly to my development as a person -- which I guess isn't much to brag about.

cinnamon_toasties ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 03:19:56 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I still have all three plus the one that came out that you added the letters in. I remember hunting them down at garage sales.

t17389z ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 02:43:41 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Whatever happened to that shortlived cartoon?

Jaspers47 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:46:42 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Try watching five minutes of it, and you'll never wonder again.

disturbed286 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 06:09:08 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I didn't even realize there was one. Although from the sound of it that's not a bad thing.

johnw1988 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:19:05 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I liked that cartoon because they took stories directly from the book.

peenoid ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:03:14 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

holy crap. i think i remember that.

t17389z ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:03:46 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Really? I've never seen anyone else who does!

martycoffey ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 04:07:58 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Literally had this book in my hand today, we donated our extra copy to a nearby Little Free Library.

Buttstache ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:26:44 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Don't go to the basement. Dead rats are living down there.

[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 04:48:01 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This book had me fucked up as an 11 year old.

BarcodeNinja ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 06:30:12 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You're not supposed to smoke the pages

dobbydarko ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:25:50 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

So many memories! We did this as our fifth grade play one year. So great.

MaxNanasy ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:43:08 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I remember I had a book from this series called something like Sideways Math from Wayside School. It had some wacky algebra and logic problems within stories set in the school. Super-fun

couldyanot ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:37:43 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Definitely one of my favorites. As a general rule, I hated to read. Not with this book ; I re read it sooooooo many times.

pistachiopaul ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:53:52 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

These books had a huge influence on my sense of humor as a kid. When I started teaching I was really glad to see they're still super popular with kids.

TheTalkingPanda ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:06:56 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This was literally the first series of books I picked up and read! Such classics!

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:19:57 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Read this shit in 4th grade holy shit I was so into it

peanutbutter79 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:07:50 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Have to remember to pick this up for my 8 year old.

dr3wb0t ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:57:29 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Thank you for sharing this.. I LOVED these books but havent thought about them for a long time.

Ice_Joker ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:10:39 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Was it from this book?

At least three times a year, I must explain to someone: "You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy."

AKing618 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:53:43 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

"I got one sock, looking for the other. One sock, looking for it's brother. When I find that sock, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll put it on my foot and stick it in my shoe!"

AvengeThe90s ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:19:18 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

OMYGOD THATS where it came from!!!!! I sing this when I'm looking for stuff, didnt remember where I'd got it from; thought Sesame Street.

Omg I read all these books when I was little and watched the TV series too, that goddamn floor always confused me I forget the number but the one that wasn't there but was.

jereddit ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:42:33 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Floor 19, I believe - taught by Mrs. Zars, no?

epicluca ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:35:26 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yes that's the one!

Godfodder ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:06:05 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Oh wow. My absolute favorite book as a kid. So bloody clever. I mean, just the premise alone - a school built sideways because the blueprints were read sideways. So awesome.

ArtSchnurple ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:24:40 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Goddamn that was a weird book. In retrospect, it and Neil Gaiman's Coraline kind of remind me of each other.

Green_Day_16 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:36:36 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Wasn't there a chapter in one of the series that you could read front ways and backwards? I have the series, but I honestly haven't picked them up in 10 years or so.

kinderbrownie ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:00:04 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Great books and great author. I read them to my daughter and happily introduce them to students every year. I love how skewed and subversive they are.

kaynov ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:05:51 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Was the story about a class each having their own flavor ice cream but not being able to taste their own flavor from this? Or something like that?

AvengeThe90s ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:17:24 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yes. Everyone loved Maurcia flavored ice cream and when that chapter was over, someone (Katie?) would lick maurcia's arm every now and then.

kaynov ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:53:51 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks! I have been thinking about that story randomly for YEARS and couldn't figure out what it was from and no one ever knew what I was talking about, I was starting to think I hallucinated it all.

It always reminds of how people have their own scent and smell like their houses, but you can't smell your own house. If that makes sense.

LordPeterLowenbrau ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:09:38 on August 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

zangor ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 03:38:46 on August 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Not knowing what the fuck this is like even 1% and reading the title, I assumed this was straight from /r/NotTimAndEric .
