I remember this commercial vividly. "Yes that's french they're speaking but no, these children aren't french, they're american." So of course I thought it was that easy and went up to my french immigrant grandmother all like, "je swee lajoo vee!" I was very dissappointed when she has no idea what I was going for. And I couldn't offer any follow on explanation since I had only sort of memorized it phonetically from the commercial. I eventually took french and learned I was trying to say I am the young girl, so that probably only added to my grandma's confusion.
You know what's funny? Reading your comment is the very first time I ever wondered what that phrase meant.

I lived this exact scenario. "Jish-wee lah-joonvee" was the only french I knew growing up. And I also learned that what I was attempting to tell people was that "I am a little girl".

"je swee lajoo vee!"
That's exactly what I thought she was saying, too. Rewatching it now, I can clearly hear "la june fille" but as a child... I wondered wtf a lajoo-vee was.
I've taken two years of French and seen this commercial probably twice that, and I never made the connection. Jishwee lazhoom vee was just something that was ingrained in my childhood.
I grew up in Iran, before coming to the US my dad bought me MUZZY & Seasame Street videos. When we got here the next year i was right there with my peers in 4th grade and only stayed in ESL classes for 1 term. My spelling was way better too, i owe it all to a giant green thing and a giant yellow bird.
That is wonderful. I'm so happy they actually worked. I always thought there was a high chance that the whole thing was junk because how often they showed it on TV.
I watched it religiously though, it was right around the age where i grew out of watching cinderella (dubbed in farsi) on repeat daily, so i watched muzzy, seasame street and also the sound of music in english ๐
I had an OG 4th grade teacher. He was old and we weren't and I wasn't a huge fan of him. Looking back we did some dope shit though.
He had these tapes. And he used them to teach us French. Why? Because why the fuck not. I remember one day we were having to say things out loud in class and one kid said his name was 'hamburger'. And how saying that you're tired sounds like you're saying you're fat and gay.
We were only 4th graders and it was only while we were in his class, so it wasn't something we could really use going forward though. This was in Santa Barbara, CA.
Good times.

The French and Spanish versions are on Youtube, if you're really curious. ;)
My buddy's korean and his parents got the english language version to learn when they came over. it's very slow speech, very distinct pronunciation. probably would be fun to watch while stoned.
My mom bought them from the family before a trip to France one summer. Didn't help us learn the language much.
The funniest thing was that the set came with the "movie" (if you could call it that) in both French and English. My younger sister sometimes decided to watch the English version, which was laughably stupid.

[deleted] ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 17:40:18 on May 5, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
umm sorry, but it was 4 VHS's, 2 Audio cassette tapes (everyone know analog has better sound quality), an activity book, a parents' guide, and an answer book.
My wife was talking about how she loved Muzzy when she was little. I asked if it helped her learn French, but it turns out she only ever watched the English tape.
This brings to mind my old Muzzy hypothesis. Perhaps it was just something my local station was doing, but I remember seeing Muzzy ads all the time, same as the rest of you. But then as the years went on, it changed. Mostly during early line-ups on channels like Nick, I would see the very last second or two of a Muzzy ad show up between other ads, or after other ads and cutting to the show abruptly, never playing the Muzzy ad. It always made me wonder if they had resorted to subliminal messaging to sell tapes.

I always wonder how much of my brain is being used with useless information like that. Or how I can still sing a song like My Own Worst Enemy on a whim when it comes on the radio.
Yeah, Scooter Dog and Muzzy get arrested after Muzzy eats a bunch of parking meters. If memory serves, they escape by having Muzzy eat the prison bars over the window.
Oh my goodness, late to the party but I remember watching this show in English in school when I was little and I've been trying to figure out what it was called. Thank you so much!
