My mom never let me buy books at this thing. She would make me write down the names of what I wanted then check them out at the library,

gozenurhole ยท 73 points ยท Posted at 22:24:03 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Is she an /r/frugal sub?

[deleted] ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 23:11:19 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Lol no but my parents were frugal

Mjr334 ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 00:04:48 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Well you still got the books, so it all worked out

[deleted] ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 01:58:18 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Yes indeed!

I own like no books now though. I check all my reading out from the library then write down the books I really like for reference so that I can check it out later.

xcutmegentlyx ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 03:38:16 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

You should check out goodreads to track the books you read. You can create different bookshelves to sort out what you've read.

lordlicorice ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 05:12:36 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

It kills me that there are people out there who aren't aware that they can buy an ebook reader and pirate every book ever published by mankind in one afternoon.

TheDemonator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:22:55 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)*

can I put pirated books on a first gen kindle? You can get them for like $40 now. However I want a lighted one so I can read in bed... *to the downvotes I asked an honest question to a guy who said to pirate books, fuck me right?

lordlicorice ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 13:15:35 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, but the tech (battery life, readability, elimination of flicker) has come a long way since the first gen Kindle. You can get a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight or a Kindle Paperwhite for around $100 and they're both great devices. I've owned them both but I use and recommend the Kobo Glo as the best budget ebook reader out there.

For pirating it's better to get an ebook reader that supports the epub format, which Kindle does not. (Kobo and the Nook do.) Otherwise you have to convert them using Calibre.

I loved this time, thought one time in 2nd grade I walked into the library and this volunteer mom stopped me at the door saying because I didn't have any money I couldn't come in and browse, broke my book loving heart

teeeeveeee ยท 51 points ยท Posted at 00:19:40 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

This happened to me too! But then the next day, I was one of 5 kids randomly drawn to get $5 to spend at the book fair so I was all "move it bitch" and walked into the library.

lordlicorice ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 00:59:58 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

It's so funny to look back at the things that were so precious to us as children. FIVE DOLLARS WOW! I CAN BUY ONE PAPERBACK! Now I'm like bitch I just spent $600 on a dental crown.

They did this at my school too. My mom wouldn't buy anything for me but when I happened to have a dollar or two I always tried to walk away with a bookmark or eraser.

Why :_:

[deleted] ยท 360 points ยท Posted at 20:08:52 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Oh man, we didn't have very much money growing up, but there were two books I really wanted to get. So my Dad scrounged up the $13 needed out of change tins, couch cushions, and penny jars just so I could get the 2 books I wanted. He's gone now and I miss him so much. And now I'm crying. Dammit, Scholastic ...

MorphimusPrime ยท 125 points ยท Posted at 21:09:18 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

On the other hand, without Scholastic you wouldn't have that memory of your father going out of his way to get money for you to enjoy those books. When you think of it that way, you'll have a lasting impression of a Dad who tried hard to make sure his child could get some books his kid wanted.

Witbox ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:53:39 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Father was killed by a robber who only wanted $13. $13 the robber told dad and I will let you live. Pops tried to reason with the robber, telling him how his last $13 went to his sons education and happiness. The robber laughed and told dad to prepare to die and if he had any last words to say them now. All Pa could mutter was, Dammit Scholastic...

I watched like 4 Harry Potter books just pass in front of me since they were pretty expensive for us. Seeing so many people experience joy/sadness upon the last movie made me so sad, I didn't get to experience any of it. waves fists angrily at sky

no public libraries where you live?

[deleted] ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 00:23:10 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Goddamn books were like never available. =(

DrSoappy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:27:08 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Can confirm that feeling, at times you would either check every few days for the one you were on or frustratingly skip it (especially sorcerers stone which was a pain to get) and settle for the movie to give the plot which would be played by a teacher eventually (personally, this being around the time of the Azkaban movie and having a few awesome middle school teachers)

InvokingTheAncients ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 01:47:43 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Please tell me you've read them since? I don't care what some people will tell you, they are just as magical with age. Mark Reads Harry Potter was like reading the series for the first time all over.

ToastedSoup ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:53:14 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I didn't get to read any of the books until after Chamber of Secrets the movie came out because no monies to do so.

TheDemonator ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:26:34 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I remember asking for a couple of them for Christmas over the years.

lennonleninlemon ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 06:38:41 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

If you're looking for a good way to hear the books (driving in the car or other times when reading isn't available) the audio books narrated by Jim Dale are amazing. He provides fantastic voices.

That little theme song before each book is ingrained in my brain.

TheDemonator ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:25:16 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I was lucky most of my english teachers in high school had these books available. If they were organized they had a name on a notecard or an excel spreadsheet noting who had them so I could go ask them if they were done with it. Yes, high school. They were easy book reports and fun to read, however I did read the last three out of school.

strppngynglad ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 01:13:42 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Oh my god. how did they pull this off? Infiltrate every elementary school in the country and make kids feel like they're on a field trip when you buy their product. But much worse was getting us to be good little sales people for the Hearst magazine corporation

[deleted] ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 22:43:48 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

My parents didn't have much money either. I feel you there. But they did always make sure I was able to buy at least one book from the book fair. My 4-year-old daughter just had a book fair at her preschool not long ago and it was like being a kid all over again. I hope she learns to love them just as much as I did.

obi1kenobi1 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:01:35 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

For me it was the car posters (which, weirdly enough also tended to have lots of balloons). I still have all of mine somewhere, although for some reason the only ones left in my old room are for the New Beetle (and of course the bugs glow in the dark on that last one)

Doctor_Kitten ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 02:32:52 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Yes! I bought a 911 poster the first year they sold car posters. It hung on my wall for years until I accidentally set it on fire with hairspray.

TheDemonator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:31:40 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

true or not I got a good chuckle out of that. thank you *I can just picture some kid being like SHIT not the car poster....fuck fuck fuck. lmao

Doctor_Kitten ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:48:54 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

True story. I also burnt a couple of those Marvel posters from the poster mania issues... Ya know, from the comic section at books a million. Nostalgia.

jsherloc ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 19:54:54 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Such an awesome memory. The book fairs every year and the magazines you ordered from monthly(?) definitely contributed to my love of reading. I hope schools are still doing this kind of stuff.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ JakeRazorClawson ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 23:20:11 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah they still have the book fairs, and they still use the delivery truck with Clifford the Big Red Dog on the side too!

jsherloc ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 23:37:16 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

That's really good to hear. I remember getting those really thin paper "magazines" from Scholastic during class and getting so excited about what new books I could order. I think this was around the time of "BOOK IT" from Pizza Hut.

I also remember that the local libraries/schools? were real big on having "reading contests", maybe seeing who could read the most books off of a certain list or something? Or reading chapters in public in groups counted towards prizes, stuff like that was really popular back then.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ JakeRazorClawson ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:42:24 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I had somehow completely forgotten about those thin magazines!

wz_I68 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 01:16:49 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Oh shit, Book it! What a memory. My step dad was a member of our church's pastoral support team when I was around eight or nine. They had weekly meetings and I would get dragged to them since we couldn't find a sitter and the meetings were four hours or so. I'd sit in the church library, which was a small room off to the side, dark and musty and quiet and filled with books. I'd read my own library books or play gameboy and eat my Book It! pizza if it was the right week for it. What a simpler, happy memory.

Thanks for reminding me of that!

whattoucantfind ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 08:08:35 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

as soon as my teachers handed me those magazines, i didnt give a fuck what happened the rest of class. i just sat there going through the entire catalog and circling everything i was interested in. i'd then hand it to my mother, she'd decide what she wanted to get me, as well as a few things for herself. and then delivery day was like xmas. i'd always have a huge stack of books on my desk. so many good memories.

electricbox ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 02:25:50 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I would circle every book that I wanted and handed it over to my parents. I would be so happy when they got me at least one of those books

whattoucantfind ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:10:44 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

yup! did the same thing with my mom. she was HUGE into childrens books, so i'd always get a huge stack of books. she also went on to work for the company for a few years. so that helped even more with my book loving.

Veeka ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:51:06 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

The monthly order things were the best! They always had those cheap-as-FUCK (I mean the quality, not the price) toys that came with the books. Every month I wanted like 10 things. My mom actually bought most of the stupid garbage I asked for, too.

UndeadBread ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:44:26 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

If you take a look at OP's picture, those are mostly newer books. They've got Monsters University, Ninjago, Splat The Cat, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Angry Birds, Lego DC Super Heroes, etc. In other words: they absolutely still do these and it's still just as awesome. Many of the books have changed, but the experience itself hasn't. Hell, even the order forms look almost exactly the same as they did 20 years ago.

TheDemonator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:34:09 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I loved Goosebumps later on, but I can still remember buying them at the book fair when I was a little too young. I just wanted to look cool like the middle schoolers. Truth is, the covers scared me, and I couldn't bring myself to read them.

ogSPLICE ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:21:22 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

My 4 year old daughters school just had one of these and yes the books are still overpriced. Great feeling though in grade school to walk to the library and waste a hour looking at books instead of doing school work.

DollyG1016 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:24:30 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Scholastic has some of the cheapest prices around for children's books. They also sometimes get paperback versions of books before they're available elsewhere, which drastically reduces the price for customers who want that title. Where they get you is the crap they sell at the checkout: erasers, posters, pens, etc.

billiever ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:37:14 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

What are you talking about? These have some of the best deals ever.

savageboredom ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:20:19 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

My experience is the opposite. The books were priced very reasonably and the last school I worked at even ran a 2-for-1 sale. I even bought some Lego books for "my little brother." Ahem.

UndeadBread ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:37:27 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, we just had a Scholastic book fair and most of the book prices were actually on par with Amazon. Some of them are a little bit higher, sure, but the prices were better than I expected.

AbacusFinch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:34:09 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Even if they are priced higher than bookstores, as a parent I would still have my kid buy books there since a portion of the proceeds goes back to the school.

Bruce_Bruce ยท 37 points ยท Posted at 20:29:28 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Pick up book. Drop book. Kick it so it will slide on the carpet underneath the shelf. Leave book fair and pick up book underneath shelf.

This is how I got my Far Side, Garfield, Fox Trot, Calvin and Hobbes, and Captain Underpants collection.

I would steal from the school store as well. Gumi pencil cushions, erasers, mechanical pencils.

Binders and folders were tricky because of their size. You'd have to yonk them at the last moment as the bell is ringing, like firing a gun over thunder.

A friend of mine just stuffed a bunch of them under his shirt. He would've gotten away with it, but as he was leaving, he turned to a teacher and said "Hi, teacher!" and waved. As soon as he did that, the books slipped out of the bottom of his shirt.

I am an elementary school librarian and I run two book fairs a year. Tons of work, but to see kids lined up to buy books and get excited about reading is priceless! Scholastic has been good about sending discounted books in the fairs so the kids with just a couple dollars can still buy a book. And I have been known to find some books "on sale" and use reward points for the little guys with a handful of coins. While fundraising is a big reason I run book fairs, seeing kids excited about reading is a bigger reason to run the fairs.

TheDemonator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:57:46 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

STRINGALING ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:23:14 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I completely forgot about these until last weekend I went to visit my GF's family and there was about 30 boxes that sais scholastic on the side and I instantly remembered the book fairs. Turns out she organizes them for their district or region or whatever they label their jurisdiction. Were going to go back up in may to take our little girl to one of the fairs and let her get a bunch of books!

Strange how you don't think about something for so long, then it gets brought up somewhere completely different that has no connection to the other source.

UndeadBread ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:49:16 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

We just had the fair about a month ago, but it doesn't change the nostalgia factor for me. It's still an awesome experience for the kids, but it's not quite the same when you're an adult. I mean, we still get to have fun with it, but it was much more exciting as a child living during a time when online shopping was so prevalent.

TrickOrTreater ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:23:53 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Truly was the greatest feeling getting to get out of class, knowing you had a shrink wrapped small stack of books waiting for you.

And before you pick them up you take as much time as you want to just browse and browse.

Which is just BARELY worth the torture of them going back to class and putting that shrink-wrapped stack of books into your desk and not being able to open them.

I think my last book order was in 6th grade or something and I bought like 6 books with my hard earned money from babysitting and mowing lawns from my wealthy neighbors. I asked so often when the books were coming in I think my teacher called the company and got me a date. I was kind of an asshole as a kid to my teachers looking back. ha

Do kids kids still get to experience this? I hope so , when I was in elementary in the early 90s this was better than Carnivale day (eat maple syrup on ice and play games all day, it was a french immersion school in Alberta), you'd read these books over and over throughout the year until the next one came along.

UndeadBread ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:46:14 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Just said this in response to someone else:

If you take a look at OP's picture, those are mostly newer books. They've got Monsters University, Ninjago, Splat The Cat, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Angry Birds, Lego DC Super Heroes, etc. In other words: they absolutely still do these and it's still just as awesome. Many of the books have changed, but the experience itself hasn't. Hell, even the order forms look almost exactly the same as they did 20 years ago.

This reminds me that in like 4th grade, our teacher wanted us to buy the Lion, The Witch and The Warddrobe books because she didn't want to keep handing out the separate chapters printed out.

Not a lot of people had bought the book yet, but then the book fair rolled around. She told us all to buy it there but nobody did. When we got back to class after the book fair and noticed nobody bought it, and she fucking yelled at us. How all we did was buy stupid things (I remember her pointing out that some girl had bought a book that came with free false nails) and how nobody listened to her about buying the book.

I'll never forget the awful "gifts" they sold at these.

I don't know if anyone else experienced this or if it was just something that my school did because we were in a particularly poor, rural area. But every year they would sell cheap little trinkets that kids were meant to give to their parents and siblings.

I think I remember this so well because my poor mom had to figure out what to do with the ceramic walrus (aka wordbank) statue that 9 year old me thought she would love.

And there were books, sure but I usually asked for money for books and bought my parents crappy gifts.

I only ever bought two books from these. One at my very first in 1st grade (I believe it was called "Why did the Banana Split?") and one at one of my last in 7th grade, called "Cryptid Hunters" (what a freaking awesome book).

Back in intermediate school, my mom was great friends with my school's librarian. After the book fairs, she would often let me have my pick of one of the leftover posters they would get. Nabbed myself a sick stealth bomber poster and a SpongeBob poster during those two years. Still got the stealth poster (which is now accompanied by a V-22 Osprey one).

The last time I went to one of these things as a kid, a classmate slipped a pencil or something into my backpack and then accused me of stealing. I was able to explain my way out of it.... They were pretty awesome otherwise.

Iarerobot ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:23:11 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I never had a book fair. I had those catalogs that would be clipped with the orders check marked and given to the teacher with a bank check. Then the books and stuff would be delivered to my class.

Kellianne ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:29:40 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I'm getting these order forms again from a nearby preschool :) My friend is a new grandma and I've already started sending scholastic books. Plus the school gets reward points.

Iarerobot ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:42:58 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I really enjoyed going through the catalog and pretending I could get everything. I remember the epic packs that comes with a lot of random stuff in the back of the catalog!

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:25:29 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

In school we loved this much but I don't know why. We were just bored. I went to the regular store all the time could have bought books there instead.

EColiMaster ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:40:04 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I got myself the Official Runescape Handguide at one of these.

Demonweed ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:57:51 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Man, those were huge for me too. In second grade, I was discouraged from roaming the vast selection, instead staying in the shallow end with other second graders. However, my third grade teacher realized that I was already into some grown-up sci-fi, and while free roaming the sale I discovered Steve Jackson's game books -- the kind where you need a pair of dice and play out combats like a crib notes version of D&D. This paved the way for an interest in full role-playing games by middle school, and all the gaming kept me reading voraciously as well. Perhaps all that paper and printing work is less efficient than data on devices, but I hope in some form young people are always encouraged to acquire a few good books of their own choosing.

TheDemonator ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:56:09 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Serious Question: So were you the kind of guy that the magic the gathering book series was targeted at? I never quite understood how they kept printing those things.

Demonweed ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:41:53 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not familiar with those. Magic The Gathering wasn't really a thing in the late 70s or early 80s. Though I did dabble some in the late 90s, I don't know what books you're referring to.

KurtCoBANE ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:02:17 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I remember in 2002 when the first Spider-Man film came out, I was in 1st grade. I saved up change just so I could get some kind of Spider-Man book when the book fair came. I bought a Spider-Man Handbook and read it over and over in class and used to get in trouble for drawing in class from what I saw in the book. Some little fuck stole it and I never got it back. I told the teacher and she told me to focus on my assignment. Teachers were so mean when you're little because you can't argue back. Well now I'm graduating and people actually buy my drawings I do of them.

BehindEnemyLines ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:17:02 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

This is where all my childhood posters came from. Lambos, Ferraris, Porsches oh my! ... and some books I guess.

Kellianne ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:20:35 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

As an adult (of course) I was a teacher of young children. We got an invitation to the Scholastic Warehouse Sale It was practically orgasmic. I had money from the school for my classroom and spent every cent of it. Plus we could buy things for ourselves at the same discount they gave for schools. My nieces and nephews were set.

Stole a bionicle book in middle school and then paid them back because I just wanted it early.

skizmcniz ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:30:53 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Book orders and book fairs were the best thing about school. I always got so pumped with both of them, especially the book fair because there was always so much I wanted. In sixth grade I got to help set up one of them in the library because I was in an after-school video production club run by the librarian. That was seriously so much fun. I think I enjoyed that more than the actual shopping I did there.

The librarian let us take $6 worth of whatever we wanted to thank us for our help. I took an awesome missile-shaped pen and a Buffy the Vampire Slayer calendar.

It's so awesome that so many people have such fond memories of book fairs.

Scholastic book fairs are something the kids in my school still look forward to. It's great to see kids excited about books! As a bonus, Scholastic gives us bonus books based on sales to build our school library.

Unfortunately, these may not be around much longer because of an increase in theft. I work in a fairly poor neighborhood, so kids that really want a book and can't afford sometimes steal.

Looking for a way to help give all kids an opportunity to experience the joy of book fares, build your local school library, and get a tax deductible charitable contribution? Donate to your book fair.
At your local school just contact the front office or librarian. You can also specify what you would like the money to go towards (kids who can't afford books, books for a classroom, books connected to a topic of your choice, etc.)

everymanawildcat ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:30:31 on April 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

You know they made those exciting just to fool us into thinking reading was cool. I always bought the toys and puzzles. I knew better hehe

Slyfox00 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:56:02 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Soooo fun. They still do those right?

Veeka ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:56:32 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

There's only one things about this event that I hated. At my school, they made us buy at least one book before you could buy the pencils, erasers, bookmarks, etc. I don't remember about the posters. But everyone would always buy the small things. I bought books sometimes (if I saw something I wanted), but it just sucked that if I didn't find any books I wanted, then I couldn't buy a small eraser or pencil? Fuck you.

Hefeweize ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:00:34 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

grease_monkey ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:16:46 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I swear I never ordered it but one day during book fair I got the wrong order. It was for a girl that wasn't there that day and I ended up keeping it. It was the first Animoprhs book. I saw it in the catalog but wasn't interested at the time. But I'm an avid reader so I read it anyway

That series was the greatest thing ever. I shouldn't have gotten rid of them :'(

swoopdahoop ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:52:53 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I bought my first (and the first) Harry Potter book at the book fair. Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone, 1997. I still have it! First Edition with the stamp in front with my crooked ass handwriting. Ahh. Best time of my life.

i loved the book fair. i went every time. i still have some of the books i got from those days. i even got to work the registers once in the fifth grade. granted my mom also worked for scholastic book fairs for about 4 years and i got to go to the warehouse and pick out books during friends and family weekends. it was awesome.

several times i got to dress up as Clifford (the big red dog) and walk around and give hugs to little kids and take pictures with them. that was so much fun i remember.

once because of my moms connections i got a manuscript copy of Pendragon: The Never War before it came out. i was a huge fan of the series and felt so lucky to have the privilege.

I work at a school and I was excited that we had the Book Fair this week! My co-workers asked why and I told them that is was the coolest time of the year in elementary school! I love to see the new books and the classics I had 30 some years ago! I like to walk around with my Amazon App and scan the books and see how much I can save by getting them online! Long live the Book Fair!

StefanThePro ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:39:27 on April 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I loved scholastic book fairs in my days, in canada and I guess I had an opposite perspective of the top comments. I could buy anything but I found that either the books weren't available or that the library has them and then if I did buy anything, it wasn't for me alone (it also couldn't be expensive). Even if little 10 year old me had $50, I was getting a fuzzy pencil and giving the change back to mom.

Scholastic really taught me to spend well, especially cause it was one of the first times alone with money around others who we're spending it.
