That's how it worked everywhere. The framing story was still the live-action Mario Bros., and Mario was the M-Th cartoon. Fridays, the cartoon segment was Zelda instead.
It was the same here, but it wasn't a separate show. The zelda segments were just icing on the cake, for lack of a better way of putting it. Think of it like if SNL did 4 election sketches and then a 5th totally unrelated sketch. Yes, the 5th sketch has nothing at all to do with the 4 previous, but that doesn't change the fact that you're watching SNL.

Watched the shit out of the show, loved every minute of it, and the Zelda segments. However it always bugged me that they never called Bowser...Bowser. And they they colored him all green. Even when they did the other Mario cartoons, they never fixed that, and even called the koopa kids different names. Drove me nuts growing up.
I still want that green Bowser as a playable color swap in a Smash game someday.

Sadly, the dvds take out all the random pop songs that played during the cartoon. They were my first introduction to "Danger Zone" and "Rollin' on the River".
I'm 34, this show debuted when I was in 6th grade. I remember being really excited. Wish I realized I was entering my awkward phase and heading into years of giant dork-dom.

Thanks to the beauty of Netflix, I introduced my 7 year old son to this cartoon. Interestingly, it was this cartoon that got my son interested in playing chess. All because he saw Mario and Luigi playing in one of the episodes.
Does anyone else remember when after a few seasons, they cut out the live parts with Mario and Luigi and replaced them with the two "stereotypical stoner and rapper" guys, but still showed the Mario cartoons? That was God awful. Although, that was the first time I heard the word "Dis", on the "let's learn urban slang" segment.
"To the bridge!" Although I watched this show a lot as a young child, I still think this show is great. Magic Johnson episode is pretty funny. I like the dance episode the most. "Shabba Doo!" "Just in time for the annual plumbers dance!"
