Hi everyone! I'm the guy behind the GAMEMASTER CLASSIFIED book with Howard Phillips, the Switch music game Tadpole Treble Encore, the Kirby-centric webcomic Brawl in the Family, and the guy to blame for you getting annoyed at Waluigi[1] over the past decade. And a lifelong Nintendo fan, of course!

Feel free to ask me anything!

Proof

"WAAfrica" (Five Waluigis sing Africa)

My book of Nintendo history with NOA's Howard Phillips: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/437762268/gamemaster-classified?ref=project_build
Tadpole Treble Encore on Switch: https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/tadpole-treble-encore-switch/

Waluigi seems to be doing better these days, as evidenced by this easygoing recording of one of the most requested songs out there: Africa by Toto! I figure we should do at least one of these a year, right? Plus he agreed to let me hawk my wares on the image in exchange, although he did complain about the copious amounts of green in them. Lyrics:

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
"Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you"

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had. Waa~aa...

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside
Frightened of this thing that I've become.

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had. Waa~aa...

Two questions-

  1. What was it about Waluigi that caught your eye and made you write him into the chaos-lord whose Waluigi time we all now love, dread and cherish? Was he already a meme at the time Brawl in the Family started, or was there something about him that landed personally for you that made you want to characterize him that way?

2: Apart from Waluigi, what individual Smasher OR series represented in Smash did you have the most fun writing for? Which world or character made ideas come like a flowing waterfall (or just gave you the jokes and ideas you turned out to like the most in hindsight)- simply put, was there anyone in Smash that you consider your "muse" BESIDES Waluigi?

Thank you very much for all that you have done and given to us, and all that you will do and give us in the future!

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 16:15:34 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

1) By and large, Waluigi was not a meme at that point. In fact, I remember when he was unveiled online for Mario Tennis on the N64 and the response was largely bemusement from everyone. I thought it was funny having this fairly disliked character run amok on the website for April Fools Day and drive everyone crazy (initially I expected the comic would just aggravate most of the audience, when it ended up having the opposite effect)! He started off just being negative and bitter, and as the comics went on, they got more insane and that's kind of where the character really found his niche.

2) Neat question. A few come to mind: Mario and Link were my go-tos for "video game humor," where the worlds are so well-known that you don't have to spend extra panels establishing "Okay, so this is how a Fire Flower works," and you can just trust the audience to know that offhand. Kirby, Dedede, Meta Knight and Adeleine started off as Kirby-centric humor and eventually became more rounded characters in their own rights so I liked exploring their relationships. In particularly, I really loved writing for Dedede. He's got that semi-villain appeal that makes characters like Strong Bad kind of overshadow the main stars. You can just do more with them because the audience expects them to have a bit of a hardened personality.

Hey Matthew!

So excited for a new project and love all your work.

My question is two fold.

1) Whats your favorite comic that you have drawn for BitF?

2) is there any world where you make another BitF type book? or a one off (like the walugi?)

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 15:42:16 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

1) A tough question. I was really happy with the "big" musical comics for sure. History of Nintendo would be my favorite in that regard. My favorite multi-part storyline was probably A Mushroom Kingdom Carol. As for one-offs...151-WitF, 385-Secret Santa, 354-Animals, 483-Mr. Game & Watch Meets Paper Mario...geez, probably several others. If you ask me tomorrow my answers will be different. ;)

2) I'll never say never! Making comics on a regular basis is tough, and the Waluigi book was able to happen because of how the gags were less game-oriented and more about Waluigi being Waluigi. No current plans for another book of comics, but like with the answer above, we'll see how I feel tomorrow!

thanks for the detailed response!! I'll never forgot the Christmas Carol... can't listen to Mariah Carey anymore because of Gannon!

Can't wait to read this new book and share it! bought one for my sister as a surprise 30th birthday gift after she read through the BitF books and loved em.

Aw, this makes me happy. Crazy that it's been almost 13 years since I started BitF and kids from back then are adults now.

So... Who are your most-wanted picks for the last 2 Smash fighters? And has the current DLC roster satisfied you?

I absolutely loved DLC pack 1 and got two of my favorites in it--Hero and Banjo/Kazooie. Fighter's Pass 2 hasn't quite hit for me yet...although if they added Phoenix Wright and (Pig) Ganon or an Advance Wars character, they'd be talking my language...

How did Gamemaster Classified start? Who conctacted whom? Did Howard approach you first ("I'd like to write a book about my time at Nintendo, and I like your art.") or did you approach him first ("I know you did a lot of cool stuff at Nintendo in the past. Let's write an illustrated book about that!")?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 19:17:25 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Howard originally contacted me way back when I did a Brawl in the Family comic: it was a tribute to Nintendo Power featuring Howard & Nester (the magazine had just announced that it was shutting down). Howard liked the comic and as a result, I worked with him for a project of his own in 2012 and we went our separate ways.

Fast-forward to two years ago, Howard reached out to me out of the blue saying that he wanted to do a book of memoirs but utilizing lots of comics/illustrations and the like. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity! And we started emailing back and forth ideas for how to best present the information, and that was that.

Hello Matt! Iโ€™ve backed your book and am really looking forward to its release. Iโ€™ll get right to it here:

A common thread between every book and documentary on the subject of Nintendo, (or video games in general) is that none seem to reference others work in an effort to further the subject matter, instead relying on basal history lessons that have been repeated ad nauseum. How will your book be different in this respect, and will you lean on the very small community of writers before you for cross referencing so as not to tread the same well-worn ground?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 16:22:26 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi!

A nice, meaty question. I think a good way to look at this book is to not necessarily see it as an objective/historic compendium of Nintendo, but rather as a look at that decade from someone who experienced it firsthand. As such, you get Howard's own personal perspectives on the happenings of the time, elements of Nintendo that he thought were brilliant, disappointing, shifty, peculiar, and hilarious. We'll touch upon the happenings of each year, of course, but as someone who would fall right in the book's target market, what I find particularly compelling is getting the behind-the-scenes perspective of a guy who was right in the thick of it the whole time.

Tying into all this is the Nintendo Power-esque presentation, taking more advantage of eye-catching layouts, illustrations and comics that will help present these perspectives and memories in a fresh way.

Thanks for the question!

Iโ€™ll chime in to say that all my energies are going into retelling the Nintendo-in-the-80โ€™s in an honest and personal way. There is no intention to review and correct otherโ€™s attempts at doing this. My hope is that my first-hand knowledge combined with my own current-day conversations with colleagues from that era will shine a bright light on what really went on behind the scenes ; )

Was mario 2 the lost levels actually too hard for american audiences or was it just too similar and might have hurt the fresh foothold in the USA after the game crash? question for you and howard if he's even available. but your opinion is fine too.

gamemasterhoward ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 15:30:44 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

HP: difficulty was not the issue for me โ€“ many games get Nintendo-hard in a way that is fun and challenging. The design repeatedly violated the trust between players and the designer with insta-deaths making it un-fun to explore novel situations within the game. More in the book.

Hi Waffleson45--Howard may be doing his own AMA soon, so I'll do my best with this one!

As far as I understand, Howard took more umbrage with the game not communicating its difficulty correctly to the player, or punishing/tricking them for things that you were "supposed" to do. Hopefully I'm explaining it clearly, but aspects like the poison mushrooms (which were nigh indistinguishable from the regular ones on the original version) and reverse warps rubbed him the wrong way. I sort of like Lost Levels for what it was (a "second quest" of Mario), but I could see it being a bad move to follow up your megahit with such a tricky game.

turiannerevarine ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 15:47:57 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

What inspired your take on turning Waluigi into a tragic sad clown type figure?

And is it Waluigi Time?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 16:04:44 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Oh, it's Waluigi Time. I'm struggling to remember the last time it wasn't.

The short answer with Waluigi is that when I did the April Fools strips, he was generally pretty unpopular and criticized etc on Nintendo boards for being derivative. I thought it was kind of funny how he was so jealous and bitter about Luigi, who in his own right is kind of in the shadow of Mario.

So that became sort of a conduit for him causing all sorts of shenanigans, and I remember Chris doing a few of them and ending on the Happy Birthday Waluigi comic where it's just this sudden mood shift and I thought it was great. Then the Smash stuff only added fuel to the fire and became this sort of unattainable "goal" for Waluigi to strive for which all culminated in the Wa-Elegy song.

So it wasn't initially a conscious choice but something that sort of evolved based on the subsequent Smash games leaving him out. Ironically, Waluigi NOT being in Smash may have done more for the character than him getting in!

SockoTheHamster ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 17:19:58 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Amazing job on all that you've done so far in your career - I always share Brawl In The Family to my close friends who love Nintendo stuff, and have had people borrow the entire box set multiple times. Still quoting that comic to this day. While I don't have a question, I figured I'd share a story about your webcomic that always comes up with me and my friends when a certain song plays on the radio or elsewhere.

Somehow in my life up to the Ganondorf Christmas comic's posting (around 18 years old I think), I had never heard Mariah Carey's huge hit by some miracle. I tossed your version on my iPod, and listened to it frequently because of how catchy it was. I must not have read the description of your comic, because I truthfully believed it to be an entirely original song.

Fast forward to the next holiday season, and the actual song comes on the radio while I'm driving with my family. I start thinking "Did someone actually make a parody of BITF's song and it got on the radio? Did it get that popular?" for all of about 5 seconds, before I realized the more probable explanation and felt incredibly silly.

I have absolutely no idea how I avoided that song up to that far in my life.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 17:23:51 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Well, that's hilarious. Mariah Carey and her crew owe me royalties! It's surprising to imagine you'd avoided hearing that song, although it plays even more frequently now than it did in 2010. But thank you very much for the comments and for sharing BitF with others!

Hey there!

I'm so glad I found this project and am happy to be a backer! I have a potential 2-part question. What has been your favorite part about creating the book (working with Howard, creating the art, etc.)? And what do you feel will be your favorite thing about the book (a favorite section, it being a Kickstarter funded by Nintendo fans of all ages, etc.)?

Thank you!

Hi, thanks for backing!

As a longtime fan, working with Howard has been very cool. It's always exciting getting a new update in our text document because it's basically these big chunks of info that I never knew about Nintendo in the 80s, from interesting insider stuff to fun hijinks on the job. Hard to say what my favorite part of the book will be before it's complete but I'm really looking forward to exploring and discussing the stories behind particular NES games like The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros 2 (the version we got here), and Mother/EarthBound Beginnings.

Hey Matthew, been a fan of your stuff for awhile and gotten all your books before, but this my first thing Iโ€™ve backed! Anyway enough rambling and my question, I actually have 2! (Hope thatโ€™s ok). The first is if you like Cave Story and the second is how often are you asked for DedeDolls? Thanks!

Thanks for being a fan and backer!

I do like Cave Story! Played and beat it back on the Wii, but as I understand it, there're some secret endings and stuff involving Curly that I never got to see.

I get asked for Dededolls pretty often still, although it's more common nowadays to get questions about BitF books. Distribution is such a tricky thing...

EarthboundHaizi ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 17:37:51 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Sorry to get greedy with a second question.

With all the newcomers brought into Smash over the years have you ever considered revisiting Brawl in the Family for a limited run?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 17:41:10 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

I've considered it...but as fun as it was, it was also very stressful putting things together on a tight schedule and waiting with bated breath to see what everyone thought.

Nowadays, if I get a new comic idea, I put it in NF Magazine. One comic every two months is a lot more manageable than two a week, and it lets me still have an outlet for if I want to do gags about Super Mario 35, New Horizons, and Sephiroth!

It's been years since I heard the name Matthew Taranto! When BITF ended, I was in the 8th grade. I remember that day well. Smash 4 had just come out, and it was the first time I ever pre ordered a game. I picked it up, and spent the night at my friends house. We watched One Final Song, and then played Smash all night. Great times. Now I'm in college! Time really flies man. BITF got me into reading comics. Thanks for the memories man, your work really holds a special place in my childhood. Hello Matt! Happy to back another Kickstarter project! My Waluigi book was great, and every once in a while I'll pull up a Waluigi song to sick on unsuspecting friends...

So, questions:

  1. What was your first Nintendo game?
  2. If Kirby sucked you in, what copy ability would he get?
  3. Do you read any other Smash Bros-inspired webcomics? I've been enjoying Wooden Plank Studios but wondering if you follow any.

Thanks for the support over the years!

1) Super Mario Bros. Still one of my favorites and a huge inspiration! 2) A variation on Artist which is Artist-Who's-Overly-Self-Conscious-About-His-Work. Or maybe that's most artists, I dunno! 3) I haven't really gone looking for them but I've seen some one-off comics in the past that were pretty funny. I think anything that involves Nintendo characters getting into silly situations would be up my alley.

Okay, this is a bit of weird question, and I wouldn't blame you if you had forgotten the answer, but this has been bugging me for years and this might be my only chance to get an answer straight from the source!

In the Brawl in the Family 458 (Home), we see a brief moment of a Bug Catcher throwing a pokรฉ ball at something. It appears at 1:35 in the youtube upload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehQlAlvncJw

Is that a Weedle or an Onix?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 19:43:28 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

It's a (rather strangely-drawn) Onix! The idea is that Bug Catcher has found a new creature to be pals with after parting ways with his Thwomp "Pokemon." Like the Thwomp, this Onix is big, rocky, spiky, and has a similar grumpy expression, so Bug Catcher is instantly drawn to it. It's funny that you drew my attention to this moment because I'd forgotten all about it until looking closely at it again!

Hello, Iโ€™ve been a fan since ~the last year of BiTFโ€™s run, and Iโ€™ve also listened to Turnabout Musical and played the Wii U and Steam versions of Tadpole Treble. I have a few questions, you donโ€™t have to answer them all.

1.What games, if any, have you been playing lately? 2.Outside of Turnabout Musical (and your own creations) have you done any voice acting for things, and would you be open to more (not asking for a project of mine or anything like that, just in general) I really like your role as Phoenix in that, honestly read a lot of dialogue in the original trilogy in that voice, would love to see more 3.Would you consider making an audio version of at least some of Brawl In The Family with you reading it? 4.Bit more personal question but, as a big fan, I know you have played Rhythm Heaven Fever, what about the rest of the series? What did you think 5.would you consider putting some past plushies, such as Baton, on sale? Even if temporarily, Iโ€™d like to get one

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 15:52:23 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi JohnaX, thanks for being a fan for so long!

1) As far as newer Switch games go, I played through and loved Streets of Rage 4 and Bug Fables. My kids and I have had a lot of fun with Mario Kart Live as well, and I'm dipping into a couple older games this month with Bioshock Collection, Xenoblade DE and Yooka-Laylee.

2) Thank you very much! As someone who's not a professional voice actor, I appreciate it. I wouldn't mind doing voice-over work as I feel it's an underrated art and I have a lot of respect for the people in the field who bring to life animated characters with unique voices.

3) That's an interesting question. I think I would have trouble figuring out Kirby's voice, to be honest!

4) I have all the localized Rhythm Heaven games. They're great! Some of my favorite minigames are Munchy Monk, Frog Hop, Fever's final Remix, that sleepover one with all the pillows, and of course Ringside.

5) We do still have a few Baton mini-plushes left. I'm trying to decide if it'd work best to offer them as an add-on with the Gamemaster books (just as I did with the Waluigi ones) or if I should just put the remaining ones on the BitF store.

Hey Matthew, big BiTF fan here. I'm going to ask an important question about everyone's favorite Pink Puff. What's your favorite Kirby Game? Personally for me it's Planet Robobot, but I could see reasoning for why almost any game in the series could be someone's favorite.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 15:54:27 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi Ryguy,

Thanks for being a fan for so long! I quite enjoyed Robobot (I especially loved the ending battle and the addition of ESP to the roster, one of my favorite Copy Abilities).

My favorite Kirby game however is Super Star. It's got that extra coat of Sakurai polish and was really the game to really give the Copy Abilities the full-moveset treatement. I also felt that the music and visuals were outstanding, and the fake compilation feel was one of those weird Sakurai touches that really added to the fun. Would love to see him spearhead a new Kirby game!

TheSacredRealm ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:43:40 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi Matthew! I've been a King Dedede fan for a while now, and I've always loved the design of the Dededoll that you made a while back (I even used its design for one of my Twitch emotes). Do you think we'll ever see their return? I occasionally check eBay and such for them, but it seems there's really no good option to get a hold of one.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 15:57:19 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi SacredRealm,

Thanks! The Dededoll is...tricky. I wish I could order more since there are a handful of passionate fans like yourself who really want one, but the minimum number requirement means my house would be positively "stuffed" with these things if I ever reordered. I wish there was a better way to distribute them, I'm sorry!

JacksonKlo ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:49:47 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hey, Matthew! Funnily enough, it wasn't too long ago when I reread through all of BitF again, so it's nice to see you again.

With how much she appeared in BitF, what was it like seeing Adeleine make her grand return in Kirby Star Allies? And, while I'm on the subject, what's your thoughts on the Kirby series ever since Triple Deluxe, which was the latest Kirby game at the time of BitF's conclusion?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:07:31 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Oh, that was awesome seeing Adeleine in Star Allies, and I even made a little comic to celebrate. It was actually a reveal more exciting to me than most Smash reveals!

BitF ended in 2014, so I think the last one was Triple Deluxe at that point (I had made a comic about the Circus ability shortly before the end). I think the Kirby games have been very consistent since then and I've played them all, but I'd like to see the series go through a bit of a rejuvenation soon since they've stuck to a similar formula since Return to Dream Land.

SankharaDukkha ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:56:08 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

If Waluigi were ever to make it into Smash as a playable fighter, is there any possibility we might see a temporary return of Waluigi in the Family?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 16:08:43 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

I honestly have no idea what I'd do in the event of Waluigi in Smash...! I feel like all eyes would be on me! Maybe a Waluigi chorus version of Lifelight, or another new song? Or maybe new comics; making 200 of them for the book wasn't quite as tough as I'd initially thought...!

GaffitV ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:01:58 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Brawl in the Family was the absolute best! I loved reading that comic. Which Brawl In The Family musical number was your favorite to make/favorite overall? I still sing the Minions song pretty regularly =)

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:24:22 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Thank you for for reading! When I made The History of Nintendo, I was battling a pretty rough bout of Crohn's Disease and finishing the song became something of a goal of mine over those couple of months. So that song has kind of a special place for me and is my personal favorite. I also have a lot of attachment to One Final Song for obvious reasons.

EarthboundHaizi ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:05:54 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi Matt. I witnessed your start with your original Kirby-focused strips that began Brawl in the Family. Can you detail your thought and creation process that led to its start with Kirby focused gags but (shortly?) thereafter incorporating characters from the Nintendo universe?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:25:56 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Sure! I'd posted the first few strips on a couple message boards and got good replies from people, which inspired me to do it regularly. But I felt that if I kept it solely to Kirby, the potential audience for the comic would be pretty limited. So I aimed to expand the style of humor in the comic to other Nintendo series as well. It was around that time that I'd decided on the title Brawl in the Family to convey the Smash Bros crossover theme (as SSB Brawl had just released that month).

Rena-kun ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:47:16 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Heya! Loved Brawl in the Family growing up.

Was just wondering, do you have any advice or tips for someone who's looking into making webcomics? Both me and my lover are interested in doing so (with my lover wanting to do a smash one, hilariously enough).

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:01:37 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Speaking from my own experience, I think there were three things that really helped BitF. First, I made something I would want to read. I know that seems obvious, but focusing on what you find funny or interesting will light a fire under you and get you excited about working, which brings me to point two: keep a consistent schedule! Two or three a week would be great for starting out, so that people will want to come back for more and will know when they can get more. The last point is something everyone will say, but it's true: draw, draw, draw. The more you draw, the more you improve, and the more content you'll have.

With social media's popularity these days, you never know when something will go viral and suddenly be a big hit, so don't get discouraged when starting out! Best of luck to you both.

Xoronis ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:53:17 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hey Matt, Iโ€™m a big fan of you from back in the BitF days. I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to purchase the books once you released those.

Some of my favorite comics you made were the musical ones. Do you happen to have any favorite covers that youโ€™ve found of those songs?

I've been a huge fan of your work ever since I first started reading your comic in 2015 (I started just after the final one released, because of course I missed the whole thing) and for a while I've been wondering just one thing. If you don't mind me asking, what ever happened to Quest of Souls? I can't find any information about it after 2017, the only things that exist of it are a forgotten blog page, the steam page, and the link on the BitF website.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:33:56 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks for being a fan!

I was doing the music for Quest of Souls. It wasn't able to reach its KS goal, so its creator started smaller with a side-game in the game's universe called NecroBall (which I also provided the music to). As far as I know, it's currently on hiatus, so I'm not sure what the plans are for it at this time.

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 21:55:35 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Three questions:

  • 1. Is Waluigi a go-to character in situations where it doesn't matter who to choose (Such as Mario Party)?
  • 2. How do you feel about (very possibly) sparking a decade's worth of Waluigi memes?
  • 3. Are all these Waluigi questions tiring?

I'm such a fan of your comics (I've read all of them probably three times now), and all of your other work on things such as Tadpole Treble. Thanks for bringing such joy into Nintendo fans' lives. You're the best!

Hi Matthew. Used to love Brawl in the Family back in the day. Donโ€™t know if these have been asked previously, but I canโ€™t be bothered to look through the thread again:

1) What are your all time favourite video games?

2) Who would you say is your favourite video game crush?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:17:41 on March 10, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi, always glad to hear from a fan.

1) My top five are 5) Ocarina of Time, 4) Super Mario Bros., 3) The Legend of Zelda, 2) Final Fantasy III (VI), 1) Super Metroid.

2) Fun question. It'd probably be Rebecca Chambers from Resident Evil or Palutena from Kid Icarus.

Hi Matt. BitF fan since Comic 75 Paintings, which was also my desktop background for years. Also, thanks for the BitForums. I loved both iterations. RIP

I have some questions if you are still taking.

1.What amiibo do you have? Do you use them? Although I had the Smash set, it was actually the only game I didn't use them in. Chibi Robo was one of my favorite. I dare say playing Zip Lash was only possible thanks to abusing that amiibo on every level. 2. How is Chris aka fiftyeighthens doing? I still check back on the website from time to time to see if there is a new podcast with you guys.

Hi! Thanks for being a fan for so long.

1) Quite a few, many of them picked up on discount. My favorites are Ness, Lucas, Hero, and BotW Zelda. 2) Chris is doing well! He's married now and still helps me with site stuff from time to time. You can hear him on a recent Q&A I did with Howard Phillips on the BitFinity YouTube channel. We enjoyed doing the podcast but the workload made it a lower priority for us. But you never know, we could always do more at some point.

I know you probably aren't still answering these but is there any chance your bitf songs would ever come to Spotify? Having "Ice World" and "A Simple Request" on my playlists would really spice up my holiday this year!

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:06:06 on March 10, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

That's a good idea! I'd have to look into it. The thing with music though is that the parody rights can be tricky to handle--it's why the BitF site only sells the three original songs I did while the others are just available for free on their YouTube pages.

Decstar2 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 10:09:15 on March 10, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

I have been a massive fan of yours ever since I found your comics when I was 12-odd. You have had a massive impact on my early teens. If you hadn't chosen Waluigi to be your annoying April Fool's day gag, who else would you have chosen?

That's great to hear! Thanks for being a fan.

Interesting question. It'd need to be someone that people similarly disliked or were indifferent to (at the time) that also wasn't much involved in the comics up to that point. Possibly Tingle? I can't imagine he'd have as much to work with as our favorite purple blighter though...

Hey Matthew,
Firstly, thanks for taking the taking the time to do this AMA. I've been a huge fan of the BitF comics (They're the reason i main Dedede now), and they're responsible for many laughs over the years. Secondly, I've got a few questions:
1)What inspired you to start making the BitF comics, and what did you draw inspiration from when making them?

2) With the success of Tadpole Treble, do you think that you'll make another game?

3) (Because it's always Waluigi time), which Waluigi song you've made is your favorite? (For me personally it's a tie between Wallellujah Chorus and For the Longest (Waluigi) Time)

Thanks again for everything that you've done, and I wish you the best of luck on your future projects!

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:14:21 on March 10, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks for being a fan! And for playing one of the characters who gives me the most trouble in Smash. ;) (I still struggle against Gordo + Inhale)

1) Initially they were just silly doodles I made during my art history college classes and weren't meant to last longer than a handful of strips. Once I realized people liked them, I aimed to make a Nintendo-centric webcomic that had the cast mostly stay true to character, as that's what I felt would be most fun to draw and read.

2) I do enjoy game design a lot and have some other ideas for games, but it's a tricky industry due to how front-loaded the costs are. One of these days I'd love to make another game...!

3) Hmmm...I had a lot of fun making the original lyrics to Wa-Elegy and leaning into the Smash rejections gave the character a certain timeliness. But I might have to go with One Day More as I'm a big fan of Les Mis and have always wanted to perform that song in some fashion (even if it was a shrill, nasally fashion)!

Torque-A ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:26:05 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

How have you enjoyed Smash Ultimate and its DLC? Any characters you would like to see in the final slots (besides Waluigi)?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 15:37:01 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Overall, I have! I'm less a fan of FP2 than FP1 though. Generally, I really like characters that can bring in un-repped series that I'm a fan of. Phoenix Wright, a Resident Evil character, anyone from Advance Wars, anyone from Rhythm Heaven, or (Pig) Ganon from Zelda (which IMO is kind of UNDER-repped now) would be my top choices.

What do you think of the new releases of the Mario titles like Odyssey, 3D world, galaxy, Bowsers fury?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 15:55:54 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Galaxy was probably my favorite Wii game, and I was particularly impressed with its soundtrack (in my top 5 of all time, likely). 3D World was fun but I preferred the Galaxy titles. Odyssey was great and one of my favorites on the Switch--lots of things to do and a very fun moveset with bouncing off Cappy. I haven't played Bowser's Fury since I still have my Wii U hooked up and wasn't ready to double-dip, but I hear good things about it and it looks cool!

Hey Matthew, long time fan and supporter of both the current kickstarter and The previous kickstarter! My question is what influences you had if any growing up to become an artist? Follow up question: do you have any favorite webcomics of your own?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:04:05 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Hi, thanks for all the support!

My biggest influence was probably Miyamoto and Super Mario Bros; I really enjoyed drawing the characters from that growing up and designing little levels and stuff. But I also really liked The Simpsons, Calvin & Hobbes and Hey Arnold for iconic and straightforward character designs that also were clean and fun to draw. I haven't really kept up with webcomics as much but I've enjoyed a lot of one-off Nintendo-related strips that sometimes make their way around social media, etc.

Immortal_Knight ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:15:28 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

That's awesome to hear! Personally ive always liked all the old nicktoon stuff, basically everything klasky csupo produced, stuff like kablam! etc.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:18:59 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Oh yeah, I cut my teeth on the Nicktoons of the '90s. I think Klasky Csupo's art style worked best on AAAAH! Real Monsters; made for some really memorable creature designs. Rocko and Doug were another two that I enjoyed for different reasons.

Immortal_Knight ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:32:20 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, I believe that was sort of a testing ground for various cartoon pilots. Pretty cool how everyone was just kind of flying by the seat of their pants back then when it came to cartoon (and often game!) development.

If you could do BiTF all over again, what would you do different, if anything? Would you have kept it about the same, or would there be new, radical changes that nobody could keep up with? Would Dededolls be Dededoodolls????????????

Thanks for your support over the years! I'm pretty satisfied with how BitF was handled, although I probably would've put a bit more effort into the early strips' art had I known I'd be making books about it and such. I actually considered a Dededoodoll (Dededooll??) at one point as a sort of standalone thing and possibly a little cloth hat, trench coat and mustache!

Hey Matthew! Iโ€™m a big fan of your work on Turnabout Musical and BitF and Tadpole Treble. Was just wondering if youโ€™ve gotten the chance to smooth out some of the bugs that Tadpole Treble has been getting on Steam? Last time I played, most everything was fine except some of the text was in Chinese for some reason. Also Iโ€™d be down with ordering a Baton plush if you ever decide to put her back in stock!

I've been harping on Michael to fix that Mandarin bug...thanks for the reminder for me to let him know again! I'd hate for people to have weird issues in TT. I'm considering putting the remaining Baton plushes on the site for sale, but I may put them as add-ons for the Gamemaster book first (since it's much simpler on my end to bundle them with an existing order rather than send them on their own).

Hey Matthew! I donโ€™t really have a question; I just wanted to drop in and say thank you for all the laughs. Iโ€™ve been a fan of Brawl in the Family since I was a kid, and along with comics like 2PStart! - which I discovered thanks to your guest strip โ€“ it helped inspire me to start a webcomic of my own. So thank you!

Actually, I do have a question for you. When did you first realize that BitF was a โ€˜thingโ€™ - that there were real people out there waiting for you to release a new comic every couple of days, who felt invested in this project you had started? How did it feel when that realization struck, and did it change your perception of the comic at all?

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ matthewtaranto ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:51:52 on March 9, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks a lot and best of luck with your own webcomic!

Shortly after the site began and I had some 30-odd comics on it, I remember hearing it praised in a Nintendo-centric podcast. It really surprised me that someone else (who wasn't prompted by me directly, didn't know me, etc) was bringing up Brawl in the Family out of the blue like that. And also that they liked it so much! I think that was the point where I realized I could get a pretty big audience of Nintendo fans, so I should do the best with the strip.

First off, younger kid here. Absolutely loved all of your comics. Any chance you might make another similar to BITF, and what was the reason you initially quit besides what was sort of echoed in your last works on it?

Thanks, glad you liked BitF!

It was mainly just very stressful coming up with jokes so frequently. I'm more comfortable working in longer-format stuff (like the Waluigi or Gamemaster books) or things that don't necessarily build to a particular punchline (like the songs).

Screw dededolls, where's the Baton plushie restock?

But seriously, thanks for making BITF. I loved seeing your take on nintendo characters and I spent my entire junior high writing stupid cyoas on the forums and being an internet cringelord (which probably can't happen anymore due to Discord). It was also great seeing people who didn't know about BITF find you through the Waluigi stuff. Keep on rockin'!

I appreciate it! Fun to see a member of the old forums again too. It was surprising how many more people suddenly checked out my stuff due to the Waluigi covers.

I am a bit late, but I was wondering if I can still buy your waluigi comic book, and if so where can I buy it? I love your songs, especially wa-elegy

Thank you! Iโ€™m gonna look into shipping costs or maybe go for the digital version, but Iโ€™m gonna think about it for a few days first :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that. Thanks for the nice message!

Hey Matthew! Huge fan of all of your work. I recently just ordered your new Waluigi book and I CANNOT wait to read it finally. I guess I have two questions: What are some other plans that you have after you have finished making the gamemaster book? Second question is a bit more.. idk different. I've recently been making tiktok videos doing voiceovers with your older comics and I was thinking. What if I were to promote the Waluigi book or maybe even the gamemaster book as well through my channel? Or like have a special deal where people could get a discount or something. I'm more than happy to work something out if that interests you. Thank you!!

Hi! I do have other plans for the future, but they're pretty far away so I'll have to keep them secret for now. I will say I'm considering something that is not a follow-up or sequel to anything I've done, but fans of mine would be interested still. Feel free to mention the Waluigi or Gamemaster books however you like!

Will do!

Hey, massive fan of your work. You inspired me to start a project (which I was mostly a deadbeat dad to, but this was created through it https://youtu.be/raljrJgRgMY ), and I thank you very much for the many laughs (and occasionally tears), and the books. The books are really good.

Oh, and random question, what are your thoughts on the most recent Kirby games (overall and LORE wise), and how do you feel about indie game World of Goo, if you've played it (Also shoutouts to @violet_sama for singing the song I posted, and everyone else who worked on that project)

I've enjoyed the recent Kirby titles; they're really going all-out with the final bosses. (Robobot's was a neat callback in particular in terms of lore) That said, I'd like to see a 3D one or something a little different in terms of gameplay since we've had so many in the Return to Dream Land style.

I played World of Goo on the Wii, liked it a lot! Good music, neat weird little twist near the end with the computer, fun quirky gameplay.

Hey, nice pipes, Waluigi!

Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. :)
