Yeah, I read somewhere that it's a very general term. My dentist used "panniculus" to refer to the flap of skin around an impacted molar. Wherever it may be, and whatever its etiology, a flap is almost never a good thing.

The only thing I can compare this to is that it seems like British people don't pronounce their R's as much, so my brain compensates... if I hear "Mali" said in a British accent without context, my brain interprets it as "Marley." Just used to compensating, I guess.

Not quite, we actually have a very wide array of accents, they're just subtler to foreign ears. An American can tell who's the Boston guy and who's the New York guy easily, whereas they sound identical to a foreigner. However, Americans can hear a Liverpool accent versus a London accent and right away recognize a difference, even if they don't know how to identify an accent to a region.
With a short a, as in ant. Master is pronounced with a long a as in Mali or Marley (the r in Marley isn't pronounced for me). In fact, it's probably the same as for most Americans, except the t is a genuine t and not a d.

Again, I understand your logic--black women are minorities twice over. But this shows just how devalued and institutionally marginalized black men are in the United States. Frankly, the metrics for "success" are far more in favor of black women than black men.
Your points are valid, but your argument is biased. These are all things that men do worse in anyway - its irrelevent almost that they are black. You also fail to mention important issues like daycare and family planning access which heavily effect a women's ability to have independence, or about societal beauty standards being very against black women.
It isn't really important why the quality of life is worse for black men than black women, is it? Were we talking about that? You were stating that black women had it harder, as they bear the brunt of being marginalized twice. Unfortunately, you have no data to show this actually affects their lives anywhere near the level of just being black, let alone being a black male.
Societal beauty standards and daycare and family planning access are real struggles for women, and I imagine especially black women. But how can you compare that incarceration, equal pay and literacy rates? Those are nothing compared to those massive areas.
And how is my argument biased? Do you think the metrics I've chosen are not impactful? Also, I'd challenge you to point to any of those above metrics and show me how race is irrelevant.
In short, whilst it's true that black women are incarcerated less frequently than black men (this is true across racial lines - a full 93% of the prison population is male), that nevertheless does not say anything about the remaining bouquet of social injustices, which are suffered disproportionately more by black women. Black women are paid less than black men, have less prestigious jobs than black men, are considered more socially inferior than black men, and are disproportionately saddled with unpaid household labor, such as raising children. I particularly would like to point out that, whilst it's stupid to compare daycare and incarceration, it's not because one is worse than the other: by daycare people mean that many daily tasks performed mostly by women on top of their day jobs, such as cooking, cleaning, looking after the kids, are unpaid when they are in fact semi-skilled labor. Being unpaid, these women go unappreciated by the economy and their rights are not legally protected. This is actually a serious problem, both from a social and an economic standpoint.
Also, I'd challenge you to point to any of those above metrics and show me how race is irrelevant.
I would further mention that, in an environment where virtually the only way for a woman to have social value is to conform to society's beauty standards, the hardships experienced by a woman who doesn't are not in the least trivial.

The thing is, what I find attractive has absolutely changed over time, and has been affected by outside forces in my life. (The way people who were kind to me looked, the way people who were mean to me looked, what became more common in my life vs. what became less common. My interests and the appearance of characters in fiction that I love. So on and so on.)
There's a basic template that you have to come close to in order to be attractive, sure. But there's a vast array of what different people find beautiful. It varies from person to person. It's such a subjective thing that treating it objectively is nonsensical.
Which makes
If less people find you attractive, you're less attractive. That's what the word means.

What the people in this sub are saying is that there's a social history that black women have where the culture around them decided that they were less attractive.

Never having your blatantly racist attitudes such as "black people are unattractive because they are black" questioned is not possible for anyone who doesn't live under a rock.

I actually think a lot of what I said is pretty widely acknowledged, outside of Reddit. I think your typical Redditor has this mental picture of the world in which race and gender are basically bullshit. People in general realize that's not the case. Black women really do have it rough in a lot of ways. I don't blame them for looking to black men first in the dating pool, either, I just acknowledge it as a fact.
I recall seeing an analysis OKCupid did on their own site that noted response rates based on all sorts of demographics. For race-related demographics, black women received the lowest response rate to messages and white men received the highest response rate to messages, respective of their genders. (Asian women received the highest for women, Asian men received the lowest for men.)
So while this guy is spewing racism, there is evidence out there that black women are less desirable comparative to women of other races. I'm not justifying his bit and saying it's okay - just saying that... he's not making it up.
Granted, OKCupid ain't real life but I'm not so sure I've seen as many WMBF interracial couples as I've had BMWF ones so... or confirmation bias, who knows?
Confirmation bias is there for sure, but a big part of the problem is that black women are stereotyped to death. Can't tell you how many times people are legitimately shocked when I say I'm in grad school, am childless, and have a stable relationship. I also get "oh you speak so well " comments all the time. Like how else am I supposed to speak?
Anyway, all of these assumptions, plus many others, have lead people to view black women in a certain negative light and think we're "less desirable." Honestly, it's just not true. I think I am beautiful and desirable and get told as much all the time by men and women of all races and ethnicities. Also I'm dating a gorgeous black/Hispanic man and he doesn't prefer white women.
So I'm an Asian man. We're supposed to be all sorts of inadequate - from our lack of social skills to our tiny penises. Now I haven't seen many other men's penises, but I'll say nine times out of ten, Asian men are seemingly more awkward and shy than men of other races.
Maybe I'm an outlier. Maybe you're an outlier. But that doesn't make some stereotypes true for enough of our peers that people simply don't feel like playing the odds on us. If we're just a picture and a one-liner, rest assured the judgements will be based on looks alone.
I wouldn't say Asian men are more awkward/shy if I thought about it for 2 seconds and didn't just rely on tropes to pass judgement. I live in a pretty mixed neighborhood in a major city and it is full of Asians from all over and they're just like anyone else. I ride the bus/subway with Asian guys going to high school practically everyday and they act just like the rest of their peers. I meet Asian guys on campus constantly and they're just like other white, black, Hispanic, etc dudes in college.
I know that this is all anecdotal evidence based on personal experience, but I think if people just thought about things for half a second instead of just making assumptions based on tropes a lot less stereotyping would occur. People of a particular race/ethnicity are not a monolith and it's just stupid to assume anything based on that. You and I are needlessly and endlessly considered less desirable and less datable for no real reason; certain traits are just expected of us when they're not necessarily true.

What you've described is how dating works amongst mature adults, imo. Unfortunately a lot of people (male and female) I think have this idea that the world owes them a relationship/sex without any work having to be done on their part, and therefore if they get denied it results in a certain amount of cognitive dissonance. Take that to its extremes and you get TRP.
People who have massive superiority complexes. They see themselves as a nearly flawless bf or gf and think that showing interest in anyone who isn't seen as the standard form of attractiveness is a sort of charity.
Attraction is subjective, meaning there's probably someone out there who can appreciate any given look more than these guys with "pity". If you're not at least a little physically attracted to someone, don't force it. It doesn't make you a better person and you aren't doing anyone any favors, so don't use that as an excuse when you get rejected by said person. We just need to find a way to teach "handling rejection better" in schools.
I think we just need to teach social interaction period in schools. (The way it is now, kids are just thrown together and expected to become friends--if they even interact at all--but you're not actually taught how to make friends [at least, not from what I've seen].)
I understand that making friends is not the primary function of schools (nor should it be), but it's hard to deny that it is most certainly a part of it. We need to get better at teaching people basic human decency rather than just pounding ideas into their head until they can recite it on a whim.
To be fair though, if school were just about the academic education (not social) then I would seriously consider home-schooling my future kids. But yes, some intentional social education would be nice in the curriculum. That and personal finance.

I think you're reading into my comment. I only meant exactly what I said--some guys think dating fat women is dating down, which is them suggesting they are somehow better than me, or I am not "good enough." I don't know how anyone would NOT feel insulted by that. If a guy's take is just "I don't happen to find XYZ thing attractive," OTOH, that's his feelings, which are perfectly valid and not my concern. As long as a guy is polite (assuming I was polite to him in the first place, and I generally am), rejection can sting, but I don't get mad at or judge someone for wanting something different than what I'm offering.
I'm not sure where you're getting the "excuse" thing from, though. I've had men flat out tell me they aren't into me specifically because of my size, and I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that at least sometimes that has been the issue even when they haven't said so.
My point is against "dating down as a favor to someone". It is absolutely rude, insulting, and spiteful. It's far better to just admit you are incompatible due to preferences/interests without ranking those on some scale. I could never date someone significantly older/younger than me, but that doesn't make me better or worse than them. Up/down doesn't even make sense because there is no single-axis linear ranking of everybody's dateability: we all have good qualities and some flaws.
Being fat does not mean you are undateable. There may (or may not) be less guys interested in dating you, but they are definitely out there. I know fat and skinny ladies / pretty and unconventionally attractive ladies who have been looking but not been on many dates, it doesn't mean anyone is doing them a favor by going out with them. Go out with someone because you both want to, end of story!
So per the original example, let's say you reject someone, and they say they were doing you a favor; that's bullshit on their part. There are other men out there who would find dating you appealing. The rejected person is simplying spitting out the nastiest thing they could think of. Which should say more about their character than anything about you.

The messages we get are dramatically different. White men generally just try to hook up with her, whereas while I get hookup pitches, I also get offers of dates.
This is... unfortunately very real. Lot of racists on dating sites.

Must be the same reasons that people troll. It sucks, because life has been generally nice to me, and I can't help but want to fix things when life is shit to her, but there's nothing I can do. She even gets street harassment way worse than I do because she takes public transportation. We only live a few miles from each other, but my neighborhood is nice while hers is not so much. (I get the occasional, like, "Hey, beautiful!" while she gets, "Suck my dick!")

Fuck that's horrible. Sometimes I understand trolling like its more of a prank. Straight out cat calling someone out like that its unbelievable.
Not that I have much experience, I'm a 30 year old male and kinda get that when I'm out dancing or something but in a way that is understanding since those cougars are mostly drunk; but to do it while sober like what do they get out of it?
There are essays exploring the different reasons people do it. Sometimes it's like male bonding, you're kinda asserting your masculinity and heterosexuality to each other in the friend group. Sometimes it's like, you just feel entitled to sharing your feelings. ("Nice ass!" "You should smile!" "I'd like to see those lips wrapped around my..." etc) Sometimes it's really terrible flirting. Some guys just like to slow down their car in the middle of the street to give you a look and a whoop or kissy noise. The one thing I can't stand is a stranger trying to grab my arm out of nowhere or trying to block my path on the sidewalk, who the fuck are you, don't touch me. I don't even care about drunk ass grabs, but something about the arm grab really freaks me out. I think because ass grabs tend to just happen and be done, while arm grabs are like someone trying to kidnap you.

My husband didn't really get it until he went out with me. He always informs me later of how many men he fended off from groping me. He gets groped too, but less frequently, and we are often at gay bars.

Yeah, I read somewhere that it's a very general term. My dentist used "panniculus" to refer to the flap of skin around an impacted molar. Wherever it may be, and whatever its etiology, a flap is almost never a good thing.

Normally you figure it out. We have a wider variety of accents than in America. It's not uncommon for some jokes to only work in certain accents.
I'm great at fishing, in fact I'm a master baiter.
That pun works in North America, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Wales (I think), South-western England, the Midlands and the North. It doesn't work in where I live though.

Not quite, we actually have a very wide array of accents, they're just subtler to foreign ears. An American can tell who's the Boston guy and who's the New York guy easily, whereas they sound identical to a foreigner. However, Americans can hear a Liverpool accent versus a London accent and right away recognize a difference, even if they don't know how to identify an accent to a region.

I think that's just true for black people in general. I don't think there's any group valued less from an institutional standpoint in the US than black men.
Edit: here is some data to support this:
Incarceration rates are nearly 17 times higher for black men than black women.
Females generally out achieve males in education across racial lines.
Black women way outperform black men in income equality, being paid 91.3% of a white man's wages for equal work, compared to 75.1% for black men.

Your points are valid, but your argument is biased. These are all things that men do worse in anyway - its irrelevent almost that they are black. You also fail to mention important issues like daycare and family planning access which heavily effect a women's ability to have independence, or about societal beauty standards being very against black women.

It isn't really important why the quality of life is worse for black men than black women, is it? Were we talking about that? You were stating that black women had it harder, as they bear the brunt of being marginalized twice. Unfortunately, you have no data to show this actually affects their lives anywhere near the level of just being black, let alone being a black male.
Societal beauty standards and daycare and family planning access are real struggles for women, and I imagine especially black women. But how can you compare that incarceration, equal pay and literacy rates? Those are nothing compared to those massive areas.
And how is my argument biased? Do you think the metrics I've chosen are not impactful? Also, I'd challenge you to point to any of those above metrics and show me how race is irrelevant.

Here's a breakdown of sources on various areas of life where black women are empirically shown to be more discriminated against than black men:
Dating: OkTrends on race and attraction. Note that both black men and black women are rated mostly negatively, but black women are negatively rated by all groups of men, and to a much greater extend than black men
Employment: this is an aol.com stub on a report by the Census Bureau, which shows that Black women and Hispanic men earn the least premium on college degrees - specifically to your question, educated Black men earn significantly more money than Black women with the same education
Salary: "The average salary for white males is highest at $68,400, followed by minority males at $64,000 and both female groups at $54,300."
A potpourri of things: finds that, whereas more black women enroll in college than men, they still lag behind black men wage-wise. Black women are the fastest-growing prison population in the US. 72% of Black children are raised in households headed by women.
In short, whilst it's true that black women are incarcerated less frequently than black men (this is true across racial lines - a full 93% of the prison population is male), that nevertheless does not say anything about the remaining bouquet of social injustices, which are suffered disproportionately more by black women. Black women are paid less than black men, have less prestigious jobs than black men, are considered more socially inferior than black men, and are disproportionately saddled with unpaid household labor, such as raising children. I particularly would like to point out that, whilst it's stupid to compare daycare and incarceration, it's not because one is worse than the other: by daycare people mean that many daily tasks performed mostly by women on top of their day jobs, such as cooking, cleaning, looking after the kids, are unpaid when they are in fact semi-skilled labor. Being unpaid, these women go unappreciated by the economy and their rights are not legally protected. This is actually a serious problem, both from a social and an economic standpoint.
I would further mention that, in an environment where virtually the only way for a woman to have social value is to conform to society's beauty standards, the hardships experienced by a woman who doesn't are not in the least trivial.

I would argue the least valued demographic would not be black men, but trans women of color.

I understand that you're putting together data and learning what you can from that, but you also have to look at the history of black women and the restrictions that were placed on them the to be considered "beautiful."

The thing is, what I find attractive has absolutely changed over time, and has been affected by outside forces in my life. (The way people who were kind to me looked, the way people who were mean to me looked, what became more common in my life vs. what became less common. My interests and the appearance of characters in fiction that I love. So on and so on.)
There's a basic template that you have to come close to in order to be attractive, sure. But there's a vast array of what different people find beautiful. It varies from person to person. It's such a subjective thing that treating it objectively is nonsensical.
Which makes
sound sort of silly. If a majority of people find you less attractive then maybe you are less attractive. But it's probably not that you're biologically unattractive. What the people in this sub are saying is that there's a social history that black women have where the culture around them decided that they were less attractive.
If you ask someone why they don't find black women attractive, for example, you'll probably get some pretty stereotypical responses. Instead of, "They have big lips and big noses and the color of their skin is a turn off for me," (physical traits), you'll get, "They're loud and bossy and angry. They aren't soft and don't let men treat them right." That sort of thing. And that's the kind of thing you can't really determine until you talk to the person.

I actually think a lot of what I said is pretty widely acknowledged, outside of Reddit. I think your typical Redditor has this mental picture of the world in which race and gender are basically bullshit. People in general realize that's not the case. I recall seeing an analysis OKCupid did on their own site that noted response rates based on all sorts of demographics. For race-related demographics, black women received the lowest response rate to messages and white men received the highest response rate to messages, respective of their genders. (Asian women received the highest for women, Asian men received the lowest for men.)
So while this guy is spewing racism, there is evidence out there that black women are less desirable comparative to women of other races. I'm not justifying his bit and saying it's okay - just saying that... he's not making it up.
Granted, OKCupid ain't real life but I'm not so sure I've seen as many WMBF interracial couples as I've had BMWF ones so... or confirmation bias, who knows?

Confirmation bias is there for sure, but a big part of the problem is that black women are stereotyped to death. Can't tell you how many times people are legitimately shocked when I say I'm in grad school, am childless, and have a stable relationship. I also get "oh you speak so well " comments all the time. Like how else am I supposed to speak?
Anyway, all of these assumptions, plus many others, have lead people to view black women in a certain negative light and think we're "less desirable." Honestly, it's just not true. I think I am beautiful and desirable and get told as much all the time by men and women of all races and ethnicities. Also I'm dating a gorgeous black/Hispanic man and he doesn't prefer white women.

So I'm an Asian man. We're supposed to be all sorts of inadequate - from our lack of social skills to our tiny penises. Now I haven't seen many other men's penises, but I'll say nine times out of ten, Asian men are seemingly more awkward and shy than men of other races.
Maybe I'm an outlier. Maybe you're an outlier. But that doesn't make some stereotypes true for enough of our peers that people simply don't feel like playing the odds on us. If we're just a picture and a one-liner, rest assured the judgements will be based on looks alone.

I wouldn't say Asian men are more awkward/shy if I thought about it for 2 seconds and didn't just rely on tropes to pass judgement. I live in a pretty mixed neighborhood in a major city and it is full of Asians from all over and they're just like anyone else. I ride the bus/subway with Asian guys going to high school practically everyday and they act just like the rest of their peers. I meet Asian guys on campus constantly and they're just like other white, black, Hispanic, etc dudes in college.
I know that this is all anecdotal evidence based on personal experience, but I think if people just thought about things for half a second instead of just making assumptions based on tropes a lot less stereotyping would occur. People of a particular race/ethnicity are not a monolith and it's just stupid to assume anything based on that. You and I are needlessly and endlessly considered less desirable and less datable for no real reason; certain traits are just expected of us when they're not necessarily true.

Okay, let's set the rascism aside for one second because I recognize there are both black and white women "above" me (attractiveness-wise) in similar proportions demographically.
Soooooo...the fuck? Who dates someone as a favor? I always looked for interesting women with whom I could find a connection and build some sexual tension with. Once I got interested, I had to show that I was interesting enough to be worth dating. So either I've always dated "up" or these guys are only dating to get laid / check off their imaginary "black chick" checkbox (we can't ignore the rascism after all). In which case who is really doing who the favor for these guys? Assholes are assholes.

What you've described is how dating works amongst mature adults, imo. Unfortunately a lot of people (male and female) I think have this idea that the world owes them a relationship/sex without any work having to be done on their part, and therefore if they get denied it results in a certain amount of cognitive dissonance. Take that to its extremes and you get TRP.

Attraction is subjective, meaning there's probably someone out there who can appreciate any given look more than these guys with "pity". If you're not at least a little physically attracted to someone, don't force it. It doesn't make you a better person and you aren't doing anyone any favors, so don't use that as an excuse when you get rejected by said person. We just need to find a way to teach "handling rejection better" in schools.

I think we just need to teach social interaction period in schools. (The way it is now, kids are just thrown together and expected to become friends--if they even interact at all--but you're not actually taught how to make friends [at least, not from what I've seen].)
I understand that making friends is not the primary function of schools (nor should it be), but it's hard to deny that it is most certainly a part of it. We need to get better at teaching people basic human decency rather than just pounding ideas into their head until they can recite it on a whim.

I think you're reading into my comment. I only meant exactly what I said--some guys think dating fat women is dating down, which is them suggesting they are somehow better than me, or I am not "good enough." I don't know how anyone would NOT feel insulted by that. If a guy's take is just "I don't happen to find XYZ thing attractive," OTOH, that's his feelings, which are perfectly valid and not my concern. As long as a guy is polite (assuming I was polite to him in the first place, and I generally am), rejection can sting, but I don't get mad at or judge someone for wanting something different than what I'm offering.
I'm not sure where you're getting the "excuse" thing from, though. I've had men flat out tell me they aren't into me specifically because of my size, and I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that at least sometimes that has been the issue even when they haven't said so.

My point is against "dating down as a favor to someone". It is absolutely rude, insulting, and spiteful. It's far better to just admit you are incompatible due to preferences/interests without ranking those on some scale. I could never date someone significantly older/younger than me, but that doesn't make me better or worse than them. Up/down doesn't even make sense because there is no single-axis linear ranking of everybody's dateability: we all have good qualities and some flaws.
Being fat does not mean you are undateable. There may (or may not) be less guys interested in dating you, but they are definitely out there. I know fat and skinny ladies / pretty and unconventionally attractive ladies who have been looking but not been on many dates, it doesn't mean anyone is doing them a favor by going out with them. Go out with someone because you both want to, end of story!
So per the original example, let's say you reject someone, and they say they were doing you a favor; that's bullshit on their part. There are other men out there who would find dating you appealing. The rejected person is simplying spitting out the nastiest thing they could think of. Which should say more about their character than anything about you.

There are essays exploring the different reasons people do it. Sometimes it's like male bonding, you're kinda asserting your masculinity and heterosexuality to each other in the friend group. Sometimes it's like, you just feel entitled to sharing your feelings. ("Nice ass!" "You should smile!" "I'd like to see those lips wrapped around my..." etc) Sometimes it's really terrible flirting. Some guys just like to slow down their car in the middle of the street to give you a look and a whoop or kissy noise. The one thing I can't stand is a stranger trying to grab my arm out of nowhere or trying to block my path on the sidewalk, who the fuck are you, don't touch me. I don't even care about drunk ass grabs, but something about the arm grab really freaks me out. I think because ass grabs tend to just happen and be done, while arm grabs are like someone trying to kidnap you.
