What if the offense shoots a 3-pointer, and the defense attempts to block and touches the ball, but it still ends up going in? Does it count as the blocker scoring?
Or is there some rule that you have to be in control of the ball to shoot? In which case I think there would be an argument that the player in the OP did not have full control of the ball.
If you shoot a 3 and a defender tips it as the shot goes off in an attempt to block it and it goes in its still a 3. Its really who "shot" the ball who counts, doesnt really matter if you had control or not. Its were you the last person who sent the ball toward the rim.
Conversely if you shoot a 3 it bounces off the rim, bounces off an opponent (going for a rebound for example) and then goes in it is actually a 2 because the last person who sent it toward the rim was the opponent and it didnt go in as a result of the initial 3 point shooter's shot.
So this I will bet my life on will never ever happen in a competitive game, but as a previously licensed offical you have to be prepared for anything.
Lets first talk about free throws. Free throws must touch the rim or they are immediately declared a dead ball. I say this because Ive seen a ball get some distance if throw right off the top of the back board. But they would have to throw it off the rim which shouldnt be able to get that much distance and causes a severe lack of control.
So in a game if a player throws it so hard off the rim during a free throw and it goes back and scores for the other team (I dont think this is physically possible) itd be handled by me in the following:
I would first rethink my religious beliefs and just stare at it for awhile.
The other refs and I would then huddle and discuss as this is obviously not in the rule book.
I would probably score the other team a single point, but this ruling would probably vary between officials.
This just made me laugh out loud man; hilarious and informative!

Whether or not it's possible depends on the rim. Most rims in newer courts I've played at will be very shaky and usually absorbs a lot of the impact to give you week bounces. At some old outdoor courts I've been to, the ball will rocket off any part of the hoop. I've seen more unbelievable things happen in outdoor courts.
I pretty much have only played on public outdoor courts since high school. The ones that are especially bad are the ones without nets. DID IT GO IN? I THINK SO?! and the ball just launches itself from the rim every time stupid Larry tries to shoot it. Get out of here, Larry.

Actually there has. Happened in a NBA game. There was less than a second on the game clock when a team was inbounding the ball. The guy who caught the ball shot at his own goal (thinking that time had already expired so he thought it was a just a practice shot) but he actually got it off in time and it was counted as a two point score, and he was behind the 3 pt line.

Lol, I've been a volunteer coach/referee for the youth basketball program in my area, it happens at least once a week. Almost always at the opening tip off or right after halftime when they switch sides of the court.

I did this once. Fortunately I missed and grabbed the rebound and could tell by my defender's reaction that I shot at the wrong basket.
Or, as a trick play to see if the other team is paying attention. And, it works both ways. If you're on offense and inbounding in your own zone, have your teammates run down court and inbound it for the easy layup. Even trickier is when on defense, protect your own goal to see if the opposing team will score a goal for you. More difficult because refs will be counting for a 10 second violation.
I'd like to tell you that I was part of the smarter team, but I totally fell for the first trick play. I don't know if I've seen the other play done successfully, and i may have just made it up.
They're one of those things where the less you notice them, the better they are. Also the same can be said about the production, the cuts and the correspondence with the commentary make it all very smooth.

No it's his basket as in its the one he's defending. You defend your basket and attack your opponets basket. You do not save the ball when you play defense. Its basketball 101

No, they were relatively set to defend. They'd have been 1 man short for a second, but it all took place while UK was on defense. Also, they were one of the tallest teams in the nation at that time playing an exhibition team, so you can go for a few weird plays that otherwise might not work in your favor. Totally worth it
Yeah but d-league isn't helping his development like we thought. Got him to be a long range threat and space the floor but he hasn't been. Sure he's putting up points in d league but the games he has gotten enough minutes to show the team what he's got, he's looked lost. Passing up open shots, turnovers, etc.
Scoring accidentally on his own team is pretty unlucky. It's kind of funny, usually /r/nevertellmetheodds is about people showing incredible luck/skill. In this case it was someone showing incredible skill and an incredible lack of luck.
Yea but winning the lottery is a positive thing. If winning the lottery meant you have to watch your family die slowly and then commit suicide or something, then you would be the unlucky winner.
So luck and lack of luck is just based on whether the outcome is positive or negative.

What was he trying to do though? Obviously keep the ball in play, but even had it not gone in the basket, there was a good chance the opposition would have taken possession in a situation where the defence wasn't set up to defend. Probably would have been better to let the ball go out of play

No, they were relatively set to defend. They'd have been 1 man short for a second, but it all took place while UK was on defense. Also, they were one of the tallest teams in the nation at that time playing an exhibition team, so you can go for a few weird plays that otherwise might not work in your favor. Totally worth it

Yeah but d-league isn't helping his development like we thought. Got him to be a long range threat and space the floor but he hasn't been. Sure he's putting up points in d league but the games he has gotten enough minutes to show the team what he's got, he's looked lost. Passing up open shots, turnovers, etc.
