I'm FUMING that MCU Thanos isn't an incel who kills half the universe so that a sexy skeleton would talk to him

I like how his goal actually somehow makes less sense when being in love with Death is taken out of the equation. I liked him as a character but his main reasoning for everything he does is very...flimsy.

Hagathor1 · 44 points · Posted at 17:51:42 on May 2, 2018 · (Permalink)

Well he’s not exactly known as the “Sane and Rational Titan”

The guy is concerned with overpopulation in the fucking universe, what business does he have with any other planet other than his? When stuff like “planets” and “universe” is said so casually in movies I shake my head. On this very earth we love people barely give a shot about overpopulation in any country other than their own yet alone across the universe in unknown planets they’ve never been on(assuming aliens existed) with populations that may very well not even be suffering from any overpopulation problems. Birth and Death is the natural cycle of life, overpopulation is hardly ever a problem because there are tactics to counter such things from happening like child planning. The dudes motivation was dumb af and his plan was even dumber imo, comparing this purple cgi dude to ledgers joker is a joke. I liked Brolins performance as the cgi character but that’s about it. It literally just another “I wanna take over the universe” bad guy and the stupidity of his plan is accentuated by the fact that they tried to make him sympathetic. Darkseid for instance is Evil as Evil can be, he is a power hungry god who believes he is the rightful heir of all the riches the universe has to offer, he is basically an alien combination of Hitler and Napoleon and he works because you aren’t supposed to feel sorry for him, you’re supposed to hate his guts. Another example of villains like this are Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones and Fire Lord Ozai and Azula from Avatar, they are complex characters but they aren’t meant to be sympathised with because they are pure evil

Not really, the jerk can go both ways. Also basically every other post here is about people praising marvel films, but way to be observant I guess.

I'd recommend not being such a prick at such a young age. 12 isn't meant to be spent being such a downer.

That’s my point dumbass, the comment I’m replying to is giving thanos a pass, I was explaining why his plan and motivation is shit, cry somewhere else

ScottP1lgrim · 2 points · Posted at 21:47:32 on May 2, 2018 · (Permalink)

Bring it over to the DC cinematic universe, fanboy

Charles037 · 5 points · Posted at 21:17:10 on May 2, 2018 · (Permalink)

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re joking or not. And that why I like this sub.

SuckmyNurtz · 1 points · Posted at 22:02:35 on May 2, 2018 · (Permalink)

Partially joking and partially serious, I genuinely think thanos’ motivation and plan is retarded and unbelievable and I do believe that they tried to make him sympathetic as an easy way out of the audience figuring out the dudes plan and motives are dumb. I also do believe villains who are pure evil like Cersei Lannister,Azula,Joker and Ozai are infinitely more interesting than ones that they try to make sympathetic.

emil-p-emil · 5 points · Posted at 02:43:07 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

We who like Thanos as a character in Infinity War also get that his plan is stupid. That’s why we’re rooting for the heroes. But I think a villian is more interesting when you can see their point. I don’t agree, but I get why he thinks he’s right.

The real thing that would solve it is explaining to him why it’s stupid but he is too set in his plans to see what’s wrong with it.

SuckmyNurtz · -1 points · Posted at 08:29:26 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

So you’re saying Thanos is a better villain or on par than any of the people I just mentioned? Or do you “see” Cersei Lannister,Joker and Azula points too? In reality evil doesn’t work that way, evil has no cause, people get up one morning and decide they want to kill not because of some tragic past or because they want to save the world or whatever but just because they are pure evil. You think Adolf Hitler thought what he was doing was right? Absolutely not, he knew he was evil, he was a blatant and outspoken racist eliminating a race he felt was inferior to him and his people in every way by the masses, there is no side to be reasoned with, you couldn’t explain anything. Movies and tv shows that showcase villains who are pure evil are very much closer to reality than ones that try to make you feel sorry for them or understand what they’re doing, that’s why they are villains, you are supposed to despise them on all fronts, a well written villain will make you despise his guts and root even further for the hero to succeed.

Maybe in comparison to the other shit villains in marvel movies thanos is alright but as a whole he’s nothing to write home about.

emil-p-emil · 1 points · Posted at 09:46:48 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

I think you’re pretty deluded man tbh

SuckmyNurtz · 1 points · Posted at 10:00:51 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

I’m deluded in thinking Cersei Lannister and Joker are far better villains than thanos? In that case you’re in for a shock buddy because my opinion is most certainly in the majority.

emil-p-emil · 1 points · Posted at 13:05:38 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

No not that, literally everything else you wrote

SuckmyNurtz · 0 points · Posted at 13:51:07 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

Everything else I wrote is expanding on why villains like Cersei and Joker are far better villains, what are you even saying?

emil-p-emil · 1 points · Posted at 13:53:21 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

I’m saying I don’t think ”In reality, people just wake up one day and decide to be evil.”

That’s the part im talking about. I couldn’t give less of a fuck what you favorite villian is

SuckmyNurtz · 0 points · Posted at 14:08:50 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

lmao y u mad bro? Is it because I’m not cumming for a stupid purple computer generated video game character from a marvel movie?

Man can I not get downvoted for once in this sub for coming at something from a reasonable angle instead of just mindlessly spewing hate?

you don't see anything wrong with people tagging Geoff/whedon/etc with constant hate messages just because they didn't like a movie? 🤔

And if you don’t think no one in this world does bad things because they like it with no other reason i’d Advice you to get out of the rock you’ve been living under and go watch the news. The guy who shot up a theatre, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Sasha Pichushkin, Pedro Rodriguez , Joanne Denehy, tell me “oh great, non deluded one” where is the sympathetic side to any of these people? Where is the tragic backstory that makes you understand and feel for them? The last person on this list literally said she kills people for fun when asked why she does it, one of the people on this list said he would go straight back to slaughtering people if he ever gets out of prison because it is “so damn fun” in a prison interview.

You must have been born yesterday and have only watch marvel movies since then to think people don’t just stand up one day and decide to be evil without any logical cause.

Btw buddy, it isn’t a matter of “my favourite villain”, all the villains I listed are better than thanos on every measurable metric and it isn’t even close, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who disagrees.

emil-p-emil · 1 points · Posted at 14:12:27 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

Noone is born evil, that shit always happens for some reason or another, bad childhood trauma, bullied at school, someone close got killed. You feel me?

/rj/ I agree with u, these darn Marvel Kiddie flicks with their CGI and After Effects villian just dont hold up to Steppenwolf

SuckmyNurtz · 1 points · Posted at 16:31:26 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

I get what you’re saying but that is awfully idealistic, you think I didn’t put any of the stuff you just mentioned into consideration before saying all I did? I specifically mentioned the above serial killers because they had none of the numerous causes that may cause one to choose evil, they had good families, grew up in nice homes and went to the best school, they then decided to one day kill someone for the hell of it and after that they got addicted to murder.

Evil doesn’t even just exist in the form of murders, what about the reports of child molestation by Vatican priests? You think of all people a priest doesn’t know what is right and wrong? What tragic backstory could have lead someone who has devoted his life to Christ to go and do such heinous acts?

Some people have no reason for doing evil shit other than to please themselves, that’s all there is to it

Charles037 · 2 points · Posted at 23:53:06 on May 2, 2018 · (Permalink)

I like the 3 dimensional characterization they gave him personally. I think he’s still evil and that can be seen by how he “balances” the universe. His random killing thing managed to cause groots species to become extinct, let alone the leftover halves of planets he’s already decimated.

And he could balance the universe just as easily by creating more resources. He just isn’t being creative with the gauntlet.

GastonBastardo · 1 points · Posted at 08:22:16 on May 3, 2018 · (Permalink)

rj/ But if a character makes a poor plan, immoral choice, or an unwise decision then that means that the writing is bad. Hasn't YouTube film-criticism taught us anything? And don't get me started on tonal-shift: Only one emotion per story allowed, Hollywood!

And then Red Skull would say "You were too tricky for your own good, Thanos!"

Of course, if MCU Hellcat was actually in the movie she would have saved all those lives by shooting Thanos in the head while he was in the middle of an intimate, soul-baring conversation with Gamora.
