Word of advice, I would recommend switching to a credit union, they're a lot more lenient about overdrafts than banks are. There's even one near me that has an overdraft leniency policy, if you overdraft you have 2 days to bring your balance back to normal before a fee is assessed

HurricaneHugo ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 21:17:30 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Pro tip.. if you have a 5/10k line of credit, you can just use it as a normal account. I have a LOC as "chequing" on my debit card. No overdrafts ever! If I get to -10k, I have other problems.

Lys_Vesuvius ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:12:57 on March 27, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

seriously speaking Fahrenheit is the most stupid way to measure temperature ever to exist.

ZeldaFreakDE ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 20:26:42 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Isn't it like that the range from 0 to 100 is okay for a human and outside its the danger zone? Well according to the time Fahrenheit was invented and to the climate that they were familiar. Celsius only gives you the range of water but besides that, it doesn't tell you much.

I'd still prefer celuis, because that I can understand.

Harlequin80 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 21:55:33 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

No that is post creation justification and not by Fahrenheit himself.

Fahrenheit was using romers system first, which used brine freeze point, human body temp and water boiling temp. But it's scale was quite small. 0 to 60 and ended up with lots of fractions.

Fahrenheit started with 0 in a brine at freezing point on a blank thermometer, then made a mark at freezing point for water, and then made a mark at human body temp.

He then ended up at 32 for water freeze and 96 for human body temp, not for any major reason other than it made 64 degrees between the two points and this made marking the thermometer easier.

The 212f boiling point for water was added later.

0F is not ok for humans. Try being naked at 0 F.

mango-_-lassi ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:06:43 on March 27, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Well that is exactly my point. If the scale was meant to be in the range which is ok for humans, it was done wrong.

They're both pretty arbitrary, and having lived with Celsius my whole life, I find it very easy to determine the comfortability of a temperature just using the number. Familiarity is key.

Most of the metric system is just as arbitrary as Imperial, except for two key things. Everything is done in decimals, and it is all designed to work together. This is why metric is better than imperial, and always will be. And we'll ignore how I and most people I know still measure their weight and height in imperial, as well as gas mileage (but still measure travel distances in kilometers or hours).

No-File-5424 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:13:39 on March 28, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Actually the arbitrariness of Metric is being brought close to universal physical constants.

hardknockcock ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 17:14:52 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Money has no inherited value except what people assign to it. 0 euro bills are in short enough supply with high enough demand to make it worth $5, so thatโ€™s what itโ€™s worth. 1 euro bills arenโ€™t in short supply and arenโ€™t in high demand so they are worth whatever you can get with the face value, and thatโ€™s based on what value people assign to 1 euro

WASasquatch ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 17:33:47 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Well, that's just wrong. Lol Money literally has a monetary value, printed right on it's face, established by a countries' treasury department or similar. It's not just a thing that's only worth what someone will pay. Lol That's just consumerism... based on currency. That established worth is always the same within the host country, hence needing more of it when the price changs on a item. It's internation exchange where it's transferable value fluctuates.

So in the case of this, you are paying 5 bucks for something only worth the material it's made out of. There is nothing in the treasury department backing it up, it's just a product to sell, for pure revenue.

Emergency-Wave-5335 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:33:28 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

There is nothing in the treasury department backing it up,

I'm sorry... do you think the "treasury department" has something "backing... up" US Dollars?

Maybe read up on fiat currency...

WASasquatch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:35:25 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Comprehension is key in life, instead of playing the technicality game like this is school recess. The treasurer department assigns the value to a note, a promise of monetary value. Hence, why a Dollar is never worth anything but a Dollar. Its INTERNATIONAL exchange may be different. This is also why internal products made in a country don't suffer such variable ranges of inflation. Because it's not as heavily affected by international exchange rates.

Emergency-Wave-5335 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:13:08 on March 27, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

You literally said the "treasury department" has something "backing up" currency. This hasn't been true anywhere for decades. And in the US, the Federal Reserve (a private bank, regardless of what you've been told or even what they claim) is responsible for dollars. Not the "treasurer department".

This just illustrates that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Comprehension is key in life, instead of playing the technicality game like this is school recess.

That isn't even a sentence.

WASasquatch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:38:42 on March 27, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

So, do you just look things up, read the little excerpt from Google at face value, and make up the rest? Lol

The Federal Reserve only has executive power in foreign exchange activities, directed by the treasury, which is the chief international monetary police official of the United States. The Federal Reserve doesn't dictate the values printed on our bills. lol

PS; "treasury department" is in reference to the original conversation, which wasn't about the US, but money and governments in general. Whatever they call theirs. All these falsifiabilities, and misunderstandings is why comprehension is certainly paramount.

What a waste of time.

hardknockcock ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 17:42:59 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Monetary value and actual value arenโ€™t really equal. This 0 bill is a good example. Technically you should be able to buy more with the 1 euro bill than a 0 bill, but thatโ€™s not what people value the 0 as. Someone is willing to give you more than 1 for the 0, so the face value doesnโ€™t matter. This is a special case where the actual bill matters but itโ€™s the same idea.

If someone is willing to give you more products/ services for one currency than the other then it doesnโ€™t matter what the government says the money is worth, itโ€™s just not worth that. Money isnโ€™t backed by anything that actually has real world use (like gold) anymore and the gold would be subject to supply/demand as well

WASasquatch ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:47:24 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

There is no "actual value" of a note, but it's material. I don't know what you aren't understanding. This isn't an area for personal interpretation. Even the European Union, Banknoteworld, etc, will all tell you it has no monetary value, and is a souvenir product. It's just funny money by the European Union in the style of a Euro.

hardknockcock ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 17:51:03 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

I doubt they would say that, and if they did then they would just be flat out wrong, especially if they were literally selling them.

โ€œMonetary value is the amount that would be paid in cash for an asset or service if it were to be sold to a third party.โ€

Itโ€™s worth $5 when sold to a third party, therefore it has monetary value

WASasquatch ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 17:56:14 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)*

Boy, you're thick. Lol

You paying for a product, does not give it a value to spend. Once you buy a product to begin with, its usual consensus that it's now worth half of what you paid, and so on. It's used. Even then, third party, something is only worth what someone is willing to spend. Lol This doesn't establish worth, but a clear indication it's not worth much but what someone is willing to pay for it. So you best find an indignant consumer. Lol

As a banknote, according to the European Union it has no value and is not legal tender. Get over it.

You paying for something you want, and being a consumer doesn't change you paid 5 bucks for something worth a few cents in resources.

hardknockcock ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:01:34 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Being legal tender and having value are completely separate. Iโ€™m not arguing that itโ€™s legal tender or even actual โ€œmoneyโ€ but that itโ€™s legitimately more valuable than real notes with face values tied to the value of euro.

You said itโ€™s technically not worth more, but if I had a 0 bill and you had a 1 bill, I would be able to get more stuff for it

WASasquatch ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 18:06:56 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Just stop. Nothing has value but what someone will pay for it. Hence, some people won't buy it new at set prices, and go look for it pre-purchased, and often half the cost, because, inherently, being used, perceived value and condition is compromised. Take mobile homes, a pretty big investment, and it looses half it's value every single year in our markets. Most today built in the 70s actually have no value but what an owner puts in it that's value, and even then, only perceived added value which is subjective. Some may find it worth it, and others not, which can very literally have an impact on your ability to make a sale.

I am still technically correct, because it's not worth anything but what someone will pay, and even on an official exchange system level, still has no value.

hardknockcock ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:17:07 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Youโ€™re not technically correct, lol. Youโ€™re acting like money has any value other than what you can get for it.

Take mobile homes, a pretty big investment, and it looses half itโ€™s value every single year in our markets

You mean like inflation? Where money loses value because people are giving less real things for the same amount of money?

Like itโ€™s subjective what the value of a mobile home is, itโ€™s subjective what value a currency has. It doesnโ€™t lose value from being used, but it still obeys supply and demand. If thereโ€™s too much supply from printing it and people arenโ€™t converting assets into it, then itโ€™s going to be worth less.

Is this an eBay thing? I should just search, sorry. I'm very excited. I didn't know these were a thing till just now.

I absolutely must have one to go with the 100 trillion dollar bill from Zimbabwe I keep in my wallet. A 0 euro bill is the perfect companion for it.

It also serves as a point of clarification. I'm not some Chicago School freak bloviating to anyone in earshot about how neoliberal central bank policies could have prevented Zimbabwe's failed currency or stupid shit like that....

Money is fake. Full stop.

The Fed recently raised interest rates, first of 7 planned hikes to "fight inflation*. Well... We printed $9trillionish to literally print our way out COVID causing markets to crash. Companies are now openly price gouging using the supply chain as a scapegoat & shamelessly publicly bragging about record profits.

Wonder what's causing the inflation? Hmmm.

The Fed won't get it under control. Because money is fake... and the way that the Fed decides what it should do to control inflation? By using financial models to project how proposed changes 'should' affect the economy?

That's predicting future events based on past performance. If you pull of the list of Wikipedia entries for psudo-sciences... Guess what, astrology, reading tea leaves, tarot cards, and fucking financial analysis.

The people who "manage" our economies use a junk/fake system to make those choices with the scientific validity of horoscopes.

This is how all central bank works since everything is fiat.

Money is fake!

The only difference between a dollar and a monopoly dollar is a dozen or so aircraft carrier battle groups and the unpleasant realization that we're so invested into this system globally that saying "ummm - I have some questions about aspects of this system" would lead to global economic collapse.

Money is still fake though.

Sorry for the length I realized about 3/4 of the way through typing this I must have forgot to take my Adderall this morning, so thanks for that!

MrLoadin ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:10:17 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

I always ask this question of people with this logic, isn't any assigned comparitive valuation the same as fiat currency?

Lets take gold during an ancient kingdom, gold had a valuation set via society due to demand for shiny, it wasn't "fake" and was a finite object with the new supply controlled by mining. In times of war or famine, it lost comparitive valuation because the shiny soft metal that isn't good for tools or weapons became less important to society. That meant kingdoms which had fortunes of gold could be less valuable then those that had fortunes of bronze, despite the gold having more purchasing power at most times.

A person utilizing your logic back then would argue gold is completely pointless as a currency, and that important raw materials should be used for valuation. This is why early Italy used bronze nuggets instead of coinage well into the Iron Age, until their economy became so complex it was no longer practical, which led to a bronze standard based currency.

That all eventually lead to fiat currency as they needed more coins than they had precious metals due to population growth. Humanity has known for literally thousands of years that complex economies at scale need better systems than bartering for conducting trades.

The standard logic is this is just an agreed upon thing that allows for advanced civillization. Your logic pretty much means any system that cannot be sustained on a "real world standard" is just "fake". Would you propose a barter system instead, or?

garynuman9 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:39:25 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

These are all reasonable assumptions based on my post; especially since I went on about the fed and central banks...

I don't ascribe to the usual subsequent arguments people on about those topics make though... As to what do I propose? That's an interesting question... Would like to make it clear from the onset - I fully agree with...ya, just reread to be sure, all of the points you made in your reply.

That said... my money is fake statement was way too vague, that's my b... And fiat isn't inherently bad at all imo - I'm not at all from the mindset of like, correcting people about the meaning of money vs currency and stupid shit like that - as you eloquently presented - currency, money, whatever is a logical thing for society to develop to allow for advancement beyond the barter system - it's an abstraction thats representative of some effort that was of value to someone else, a work unit with a generally agreed upon value. Lets, like, a mason to build a new oven for the baker & get paid in something that can be used to buy any good as opposed to like... just bread.

There's no real difference if the things used to represent those work units have intrinsic value or not... Like, was it the Rapungi people in the South Pacific - I think that's correct, that just used big ass stones that they didn't move, and some had even sunk when on ships, didn't matter, just person a traded person b ownership of a specific stone in exchange for (thing).

Sooo no, not an advocate of returning to the barter system, and don't think it matters if what's used has intrinsic value or not... I do think that something like Keynes's initial proposal for the Bancor makes a lot of sense though - it's not important that like, the bills in my wallet have intrinsic value, but it's helpful if the supply of them if linked to a something real and finite in a way that doesn't limit economic growth but discourages things like printing nonsensical amounts of new money to prop up markets artificially. Shouldn't be necessary in theory but people are greedy dicks so... Shrug.

So assuming the following are objectively true statements... 1. Money is fake, but that's okay, but also it's very important to realize that, 2. it's equally important that people are aware of the fact that our monetary policy is based on a board of people guessing based on the results of applying tests to models in a process as scientifically valid as horoscopes, and finally 3. We were perfectly willing to print $9 trillion to support markets, an EXTREMELY small percentage of which was actual assistance to people during a global pandemic.

I would propose that we are advanced enough as a society that no one should die from poverty, or hunger, or lack of medical care. I would argue that statistics show that we could easily afford to pay for that, it would actually save money. I would further argue that this pays for itself in a way that scales exponentially over time - there should be a basic gaurenteed standard of living.

Sort of a market socialism type affair - probably would look a lot like the next evolution of Scandinavian systems, with more protections from undue influence of moneied interests.

MrLoadin ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:00:54 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

I'd also make the argument that the nuclear weapons are really what props up the valuation, moreso than anything else.

This entire war is caused by a failure of Western diplomacy the exact same way how a...

Yes. the exact same way because none of that is true.

No order from Hussein, no invasion of Kuwait.

No order from Putin, no multiple invasions of Ukrane.

I know that Putin = bad and the war is horrible, but I still do feel sorry for the people in Russia who are also victims. It's like making fun of Enron employees whose 401k became worthless or a fraction of what it was worth.

Edited for clarification.

ban_circumcision_now ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 15:31:25 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)*

Edit: the post above initially said that Russians were the real victims

Iโ€™d say the Ukrainians are the real victims. The Russians allowed their current leadership to happen

paul-arized ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:05:29 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Edit: in addition to Ukrainians and all the immigrants. But to say that Russia allowed it to happen is like saying Singaporeans allowed their politicians to keep getting elected or Americans NOT stopping Trump from winning in 2016 and NOT stopping 3 justices frpm being confirmed.

what are they gonna do? another revolution? hell if you look at russian history you can see that they tried that... 3 times already. ban_circumcision_now ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 20:09:53 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Biggestredrocket ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:10:10 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

ban_circumcision_now ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:38:26 on March 27, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Sure, but allowing a dictator to continually grab power for decades was also a decision

Ideally yes, we should be placing tariffs on countries that donโ€™t have speech and political freedom so they donโ€™t become that powerful

sorenant ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:20:40 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Russians had decades to deal with Putin. They're reaping what they sow by being complacent about authoritarians taking over their government. May this serve as a lesson not only to the Russians but to the entire world re-evaluate how much they're willing to fight for democracy.

paul-arized ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:09:12 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)*

Do you think the Uyghurs and Tibet don't want to fight for democracy in China? Same is happening in Russia. They can't even report real news anymore nor be critical of the Russian government.

Edit: or Hong Kong. So by your logic, Hong Kong citizens deserve the ire of China and aren't fighting enough.

sorenant ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:51:37 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

No one said it's easy, just look at history. Edit: Also Hong Kong has been fighting for their freedom, their protests back in 2019 was very respectable.

paul-arized ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:03:05 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

They were able to temporarily stave off some laws but overall it's still not where it used to be even 10 years ago when it looked it would be hands off. Not saying that they didn't fight back, just that they won some battles but all of that only pertained to HK and not, say, the rest of China. Nothing is ever easy, but I look at North Korea and I see similarities between the citizens there and and in Russia. Imagine if only OANN can be played in the US and all other stations are outlawed. And, sadly, some people will be perfectly content with that, too.

sorenant ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:12:23 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

North Korea is the future of Russia if their citizens keeps complacent and fearful, then they will have no chance to fighting back.

Thatโ€™s not a correlation. The value of money is labelled.

A 10 dollar bill is worth 10 1-dollar bills. Itโ€™s math.

The mistake youโ€™re thinking of is assuming everyone is assuming the lowest limit is valueless, but no one is assumed that.

Paper has value, even if it wasnโ€™t โ€œmoneyโ€ it could be used as paper. It will always inherently have some value, but the way money works vis-a-vis the written value of the note, is a direct causation to how much value one will be able to exchange that note for.

There is the concept of pennies and the physicality of pennies. You are most likely right there is some politics that is behind them still being minted. But there is also an American mindset of not being willing to pay $5 for something, but finding $4.99 a bargain.

At the time of the first euro coins it was expected that Sweden would adopt ERM II, peg the krona to the euro, and start issuing and using the euro generally. Seriously? You need this broken down??? Fine...

Person A said that the 2002-2022 were put over sweden so the "genitalia" wouldn't be shown and you argued that it was because sweden doesn't use the euro. I said that there are other countries on the map that also don't use the euro so your argument doesn't hold up. So my point was that... you were wrong? C'mon dude... it's not rocket science...

CRWB ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:10:51 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Rude. My point was that wouldn't have been any issue anyway due to the fact Sweden wouldn't have been coloured in therefor the Swedish cock would have not been a issue (as the outline is not nearly as obvious as the fully coloured in cock). You are rude and should seriously consider the tone of your comments. Dick.

Hardly any countries in the EU even democratically entered the EU - only France and Denmark had successfully held a referendum to enter. The rest forced their applications through in their respective parliaments via leadership elections or constitutional loops.

Britain helped ratify the maastricht treaty by tying it to a leadership election in Parliament - without the opinion of the public, which was against it as the polls showed.

The EU is far from 'united'. If its so unified, then the EU should mandate that all current members hold public referendums to prove public support for it. But no Wolf would bite its own foot..

kebakent ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 15:37:07 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

kebakent ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:04:15 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Indeed. International cooperation is great, but EU just isn't. During the migrant crisis, the EU tried to force Denmark out of europol unless we fully dropped our immigration law sovereignty. Our politicians hid a backdoor, allowing them to decide on future EU matters without a national vote. Luckily we voted no, or we would have the same crime rates as Sweden now. Now they're screwing us on climate, even though we have tons of windmills, electric cars and sustainable farming, by choosing metrics that favor big dirty EU cities.

Gamesdean98 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:08:28 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

That's exactly the problem with the EU. It's a union where the decisions are made by the elites that think they know what's best for everyone. It's a corrupt entity that is not based on any sort of "democracy" at all. Sorry to hear that about Denmark though. The EU just doesn't seem to realize that all countries are not equal which makes them have unequal issues, and should base decisions on what's best for themselves while still coming together to cooperate when they need to.

kebakent ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:50:07 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Amen. I'm disgusted by the idea that one, or a few elites, or even a small majority, gets to socially engineer the lives of everyone else. It's the worst aspect of every totalitarian regime. They decide what you eat, do and say, because they know best. Wokeness and environmentalism are the official western religions now, reflected in every lefty political speech, every company mission and even education. Dissenters are ostracized.

We just made it practically mandatory for men and women to take equal maternity leave, regardless of what the family wants because of some new EU law. They're also trying to ban serving meat in public institutions on certain days. Parents are being forced to enroll their kids in ghetto schools. Slowly and surely, it's all rotting away. Hopefully a new movement will emerge soon, to bring back free choice and personal responsibility.

Brexit was never about the 'economic benefits' of leaving the EU - it was about the Political ones. Of pulling the UK out of a rotten and overly-centralized and bureaucratic political Entity which had its own twisted and corrupt views about that Europe should become.

Practically every Soviet Sattelite state had economic slumps the moment they broke away from the Soviet Union. But they didn't care - leaving the political entity was the important bit to them. Economies can recover - freedom and political sovereignty is much harder.

WellIGuesItsAName ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:04:32 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)*

I mean, i too hate all those benefits from the EU effect to the free traveling, the cheaper/free roaming, unified money, EU programs like student visas not to mention all the consumer friendly laws we got. Corruption will be there, but corruption is present at home too.

To think that just because UK left the EU, somehow their nation will be the same as under Victoria is delusional at best. Now you might have your own say in stuff like home sold food or other products or what third grade meat you import from the Us, but for them to be exported into the EU, now not free but with a fee, they still need to follow EU laws, makeing you subject to them either way, just now without a saying in it.

Nickyworld45 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:09:50 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

I was supportive of such an entity until it became the EU - the EEC had practically all of those benefits, just without a political entity at the top - without a flag, without an anthem, without some 'pseudo federalist culture' and most importantly, while respecting the independent nationhoods of Europe.

When the EEC all of a sudden undemocratically transitioned to the EU In 1991 - all while trying to practically buy public support with the economic benefits like you mentioned - I immediately lost support for it.

Economic benefits never justify a political entity which isn't publically supported. A stark majority of Europe is against the EU. Most just choose to live with it. The Euro has fucked over so many economies with its unnecessary empire-like centralisation; Greece couldn't even print money to combat austerity because the EuroBank said no. That is the cost of losing sovereignty. When you cannot even control your own currency, all while Eurosupporters claim that the benefits are 'worth it'.

Brexit isn't about economics. It's about politics.

WellIGuesItsAName ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:32:05 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

We can ignore history, or we can embrace the struggle of European Nations to a more unified continent.

Before the EU, there where the ECSE, Euro Coal and Steel Community, the EEC, Euro Economics Community and the EACE, Euro Atomic Energy Community.

The EEC, founded 1958, with the todays EU flag since 86 and the "Ode to Joy" as its anthem, was merged into the EU in 93. Its goal was to form integration of its founding members in political trading matters, i.e. the forming of a single continental market.

"a harmonious development of economic activities, a continuous and balanced expansion, an increase in stability, an accelerated raising of the standard of living and closer relations between the States belonging to itโ€

From the 57 treaty.

So to say that the EU was just thrown at the table, accepted and everyone was done with it, is not correct.

It was long in the makeing. Endorsed by the elected leaders of the nations along the way.

Also, any source for your claim that the EU is widely not liked? Even after month of propaganda and lies, the torys only managed a slim majority while crys for leaving the EU have long gone silence after Brexit. Even partys, like the ever so far right AfD, known for being anti EU, has long since droped the talking point.

Nickyworld45 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:57:42 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Pew Research data showing practically half of the EU being almost majorly against membership

You do make a fair point - the larger form of the EU was long in the making. While economic cooperation within Europe can only benefit such countries, it isn't in everybody's mindset to have that AND additionally have the politically centralised attitude of the EU.

The views of Political leaders on the EU have hardly ever reflected public opinion. The Conservatives had the largely anti-EU Thatcher in 1989, and then suddenly had the pro-EU John Major by 1991 - despite an increase in Public Euroscepticism, even amongst Conservative Voters.

The EU has brought many economic benefits - in that there is no doubt. But the trade off of having to sign away a Nation's economic and political independence in the long run is worrying to many, and rightfully so. Countries like Greece and Italy have already calamitously suffered from this newfound subservience to higher powers - printing the Euro to combat economic strife is impossible as Brussels has a grip on its inflation rates.

Economic cooperation and prosperity doesn't need a heavily centralised and corrupt Political structure to host it - where the only candidate you could have voted for is literally one - Ursula Von Der Leyen. Most of the EU's leading ministers are in fact failed politicians from previously-held posts. Ursula for example, was once Germany's defence minister - and saw the complete collapse of its budgetary management as a result. Donald Stump had a similar backstory too, as did many others.

The Undemocratic nature of the EU's head system will never be seen as favorable by most 'because of economic benefits'. To swallow such a narrative that you can buy support via welfare is naive. Most of Europe's populus have never even heard of the EU's leading politicians, because they have no direct say in what such leaders can do or how they even get into power.

Chromotron ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:58:25 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Greece couldn't even print money to combat austerity because the EuroBank said no

You are conveniently forgetting that Greece lied and cheated to get into the EU to gather money and benefits. Obviously the EU was not happy when that came out and they suddenly wanted to print EU(!) money to solve their home-made problem.

Nickyworld45 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:04:38 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

I haven't forgotten that. The example I was mentioning was that whenever a member state individually suffers - say because of the changing prices of one of their major exports - they cannot print money to pull themselves out.

Greece very much did fake economic data prior to adopting the Euro. But that was in 2004. The crisis never hit until more than a decade later. Is the Euro's success dependant on whether all the countries that adopt it remain economically successful for the rest of eternity? When a major crisis hits and all of Europe's economies suffer differently, the Euro will crumble. It almost did during the financial crisis.

Don't get me wrong, you do make a very good point nonetheless.

Gamesdean98 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:02:03 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

It's pretty obvious the economy was going to take a hit at first, but they will recover. Nickyworld45 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:27:07 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

If Greece could print its own notes, I don't think they'd still be struggling to exceed pre-2015 GDP levels even today. The EU has a colossal amount of influence in the economies it oversees. The economic benefits Eurosupporters so frequently cite should tell you that in itself.

llfo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:23:38 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

How would that help Greece.

Nickyworld45 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:29:16 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Greece was facing an immense financial crisis - their Government was being heavily dragged down by expensive and inefficient public services, which were slowly dragging the country into a debt crisis. Rather than taking out mass loans and cutting public expenditure en masse, countries usually print money - which increases inflation, which can save an economy from a total collapse.

Printing money isn't always the bad stigma that the press paints it as. When a Government needs to keep public pensions, welfare and the bare minimum wage up, printing money is a sacrifice that can pay off in the long run.

Greece's membership in the EU did not allow that. They couldn't print a single note to save themselves as they were using the Euro, which only Brussels has the authority to inflate - and they would never do it for a small country like Greece. That alone shows the weakness of a shared currency.

So instead, Greece just went bankrupt. Rubbish piled up on the sides of roads, and goods became practically worthless.

Hardly any countries in the EU even democratically entered the EU

Nonsense. The democratically elected parliament decided this in most cases. Which is exactly how a democracy works. Many countries also allow for a referendum if enough people demand it.

Do you think that the governments just did this out of spite or because BIG EU bribed them personally? Because nether is true.

Nickyworld45 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:57:10 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

That isn't how a democracy works. A referendum should've been held, just like what happened with the Brexit vote.

If Britain decided to leave the EU solely because the Parliament decided so, would that still be classed as democratic?? There's a reason referendums exist, and entering the EU should've mandated one. Few countries ever held a referendum when deciding to join. Its called the democratic process. Not a bunch of people you voted for 3 years earlier personally deciding if your country should join, without even having advertised it during their election period.

Chromotron ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:06:41 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

That isn't how a democracy works.

That's exactly how a representative democracy is supposed to work. There is no need for a referendum, especially if the application takes long enough for there to be an election.

You did not explain why referendums are implied in any way. Those same people you voted for three years ago also decide on your taxes, your freedoms, and whatever, but a political membership is suddenly too much?

Nickyworld45 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:15:56 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Referendums give you a big and objective value of how many people support something - rather than pinning it down to a Parliament where 200 people decide the same thing. Joining or leaving the EU is a much bigger decision than for example changing a tax - and regardless, many big decisions still involve referendums, like Abortion for example. Imagine if a bunch of old men decided whether Abortion was legal or not in your Parliament with no public referendum? Albeit, sometimes that is unfairly the case.

Referendums leave little room for debate. It's a concrete indication that a majority of the population supports or detests something - deciding to join or leave the EU is a decision on a geopolitical scale that can literally influence the future of a country. Putting that in the direct hands of the People should be a priority for any mature democracy.

In 1973, Britain held a referendum to join what was at the time the EEC - a mere economic sphere of mutual benefit. They voted to join overwhelmingly, yet had no say in what it would suddenly become when the Maastricht Treaty circulated in 1991. John Major tied it to a leadership election knowing his own party wouldn't vote themselves out of power, or risk giving the opposition votes. Major himself knew (being supportive of the EU) that the Public were heavily against the Maastricht Treaty via the polls, so he resisted holding a Referendum - which is criminally undemocratic.

That's incorrect and I'm really confused how you could not know that is wrong. "There are 27 countries in the European Union, but 8 of them are not in the eurozone and therefore don't use the euro."

"The number of EU countries that do not use the euro as their currency; the countries are Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Sweden."

lol maybe, I know a ton of idiots who fought to get the "collectable" quarters in the usa thinking they will jump huge amounts in time... still worth .25 all these years later. I guess if the demand rises and limited production, but I think of it like the comic collectors in the 90's and most are still about the same value as when they got them. It is hard to say if this will become a trend. They look nice, so it is possible. I just hope people dont spend their savings on getting a lot of them in case they dont move up.

...why?

Nagu360 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:18:16 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

Because collectable currency is a thing and by assigning it 0 dollars you are basically saying there is no legal backing and it's a complete waste of currency printing materials.

RedexSvK ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 15:21:33 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

...that only applies to currency meant for actual use. The 0โ‚ฌ bank note was never meant to be a real currency, it's just a souvenir therefore need no legal backing.

Nagu360 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:39:12 on March 26, 2022 ยท (Permalink)

You don't understand how collectable currency works.

You can totally make currency not meant for circulation for collection purposes and still guarantee minimum value.

For example: the Canadian Million Dollar Gold Coin

Now, obviously this wasn't meant to enter circulation. I mean, not only is the gold worth more than a million, but it's size is impractical even as payment for a run-down shack in Toronto these days.

But, theoretically, you probably could use it that way if you really want to, because the face value assigns a minimum worth even if one day gold becomes easily synthesized and the price of gold plummets to aluminum levels.

Because unlike the EU, the Canadian Mint aren't total cheapskates.

The Euro is a mess. All unity now because of COVID and the with the war in Ukraine. But before that, there were increasing calls among nations to get out of it. A country like Italy or Greece have no control over monetary policy. Either you have a currency where all nations participate (like the states in the US) or have increasing divergence on fiscal and monetary needs where a country like Germany can be thriving with no debt and would like higher interest rates, but Greece, Italy, Portugal or some other with high debt slow growth and needs lower interests rates and are powerless to do anything and have to go hat in hand to the EU and ECB and do whatever they ask. A sovereign country needs control of its money for lending, interest rates, inflation control, currency valuation and devaluation, etc. You can have a Eurodollar for commerce, but in the long, unless the EU unifies fully monetarily it is better to be like the UK, Denmark, Sweden. The euro helped some countries thrive early on, but after 10 years, if I was for example Germany, I would bring back the Deutsche Mark.

Utterly redundant and cringy virtual signalling.

No, this only shows how ignorant you are about European cultures, history, languages and ethnicities.

If you look at Europe and only think "white people" and don't see the diversity, you are just as ignorant as someone that looks at Africa and only thinks "black people" and doesn't see the diversity.

Diversity is NOT only an ethnicity thing, and, again, Europe has a lot of ethnic diversity.

It has the same size, paper, and security features as the 20 Euro note. Since its introduction in 2015, the zero Euro bill has been quite appreciated by collectors throughout the EU.
