When there are survey benchmarks in the middle of the interstates (usually spaced out for x amount of distance), it should be easy to determine the actual distance for the new mile post.
Can confirm.

We do in the UK, but then mostly everything else is in metric. Petrol (no not gasoline) is always in litres so your fuel consumption being in MPG is just a pain in the arse (yes arse not ass).
Oh and for some reason we measure humans in imperial. If you tell me the weight of a person in kilos and their height in metres, I have no idea what it means. If you tell me the weight of a bag of sugar in lbs and oz, you may as well just shout random noises at me.
Heh, we still talk about two-by-fours even in nearly completely metricated Finland. Although they're actually 50ร100 mm, not actually exactly 2"ร4" (= 50.8ร101.6 mm). Five-by-tens (in cm) wouldn't even be that different to say tbh. Length is metres though.
Does the lumber industry do that infuriating '2" x 4" is really 1.5" x 3.5"' thing? (for those who don't know, a 2x4 board is really 1.5x3.5, 1x2 is really 0.75x1.5, etc; this is called nominal sizing and it is bullshit)
UK "mile posts" on motorways and other highways are called Driver Location Signs and are marked in kilometers.

Just because you were born in a place that uses certain measurement systems doesn't mean you can't learn the other one. It's not hard to learn stone to kilos to pounds. Always good to educate yourself
E.g. here in Finland we don't have those either. There are occasional road signs saying that e.g. it's 53km to Helsinki, or 425 km to St. Petersburg (depending on the road, 2-3 destinations in the direction you're going, usually; the previous example would match a spot somewhere to the west of Helsinki, but I think St. Petersburg usually only shows up on roads going east of Helsinki). However, they're not placed every km or even at regular intervals, instead usually being after larger intersections or such.
We used to have mile posts in Scandinavian miles i.e. ~6.6 modern imperial/customary miles, from some time after 1649, and those were placed every 1/4 of said miles; then in Finnish Verst (a tenth of the previous unit = 1068.8 m) from after 1827, the posts of which apparently remained even (edit:) probably replaced by new ones after official metrication in 1888 (it was close enough to 1 km, I guess), until and new (/edit) posts in km were placed in the 1920s-1930s. Those were removed in the early 1980s, although a few remain, and in fact the few still standing, mostly on smaller roads, are now protected as historical relics.
So to us, or at least to me, mile/kilometer posts every mile/km, or even regularly at e.g. 10-mile intervals, look quaint and old-timey, since I've never really driven on roads that would have them.

Interesting. What were they used for at the time? As the current purpose (to inform emergency services of your exact position) obviously would not have been an option at the time?
Well, at least the change to verst came because Russian soldiers asked to have the posts in those units instead of the 10 times as large Scandinavian miles. So my best guess is to aid in navigation for non-locals. As far as the Finnish wikipedia article on milestones talks about it, it seems like the roads were only measured twice during Swedish rule (once in the 1500s, another time in the 1600s), a third time post-1827 by the Russians, 4th time after metrication, and the 5th time was when they were replaced again in the 1920s and 1930s as mentioned.
What I'm getting at is that the act of measuring and placing the posts was probably in itself quite useful for surveying and statistical purposes. How much land did your country control, how long would it take to march between cities or certain areas, etc.
Btw your "current purpose" obviously doesn't apply here. ;) The best option for informing emergency services now is a smartphone app that can relay your GPS position to the 112 call center. ;)
For real. I have this magic device I carry with me at all times that can easily convert units if I need to. Converting all sorts of infrastructure in the US from imperial to metric would be expensive and have virtually no benefit.

Oh! Language always amuses me. In my native language fishing lines are countable. That would be "Anzรณis, chumbadores e linhas de pesca" all three using the plural form.
Hook, line and sink is prolly copyrighted. There is a chain of restaurants called that around here. Not sure if they have a copyright or not but it would make sense that a sign maker would deliberately form the saying in this way.
I know the expression, but my juvenile mind thought it had something to do with the rudimentary drawing of an asshole above the sign. Complete disappointment.

We do in the UK, but then mostly everything else is in metric. Petrol (no not gasoline) is always in litres so your fuel consumption being in MPG is just a pain in the arse (yes arse not ass).
Oh and for some reason we measure humans in imperial. If you tell me the weight of a person in kilos and their height in metres, I have no idea what it means. If you tell me the weight of a bag of sugar in lbs and oz, you may as well just shout random noises at me.

Heh, we still talk about two-by-fours even in nearly completely metricated Finland. Although they're actually 50ร100 mm, not actually exactly 2"ร4" (= 50.8ร101.6 mm). Five-by-tens (in cm) wouldn't even be that different to say tbh. Length is metres though.

There are occasional road signs saying that e.g. it's 53km to Helsinki, or 425 km to St. Petersburg (depending on the road, 2-3 destinations in the direction you're going, usually; the previous example would match a spot somewhere to the west of Helsinki, but I think St. Petersburg usually only shows up on roads going east of Helsinki). However, they're not placed every km or even at regular intervals, instead usually being after larger intersections or such.
We used to have mile posts in Scandinavian miles i.e. ~6.6 modern imperial/customary miles, from some time after 1649, and those were placed every 1/4 of said miles; then in Finnish Verst (a tenth of the previous unit = 1068.8 m) from after 1827,
the posts of which apparently remained even(edit:) probably replaced by new ones after official metrication in 1888(it was close enough to 1 km, I guess),untiland new (/edit) posts in km were placed in the 1920s-1930s. Those were removed in the early 1980s, although a few remain, and in fact the few still standing, mostly on smaller roads, are now protected as historical relics.So to us, or at least to me, mile/kilometer posts every mile/km, or even regularly at e.g. 10-mile intervals, look quaint and old-timey, since I've never really driven on roads that would have them.

Well, at least the change to verst came because Russian soldiers asked to have the posts in those units instead of the 10 times as large Scandinavian miles. So my best guess is to aid in navigation for non-locals. As far as the Finnish wikipedia article on milestones talks about it, it seems like the roads were only measured twice during Swedish rule (once in the 1500s, another time in the 1600s), a third time post-1827 by the Russians, 4th time after metrication, and the 5th time was when they were replaced again in the 1920s and 1930s as mentioned.
What I'm getting at is that the act of measuring and placing the posts was probably in itself quite useful for surveying and statistical purposes. How much land did your country control, how long would it take to march between cities or certain areas, etc.
Btw your "current purpose" obviously doesn't apply here. ;) The best option for informing emergency services now is a smartphone app that can relay your GPS position to the 112 call center. ;)

It's extremely common, but maybe a little more popular in the early 1900s, but still widely used.
Maybe it's going out of use for your region? But I'd guarantee if you asked 100 people if they'd heard of it, 75 would say yes.
