Manager at a Jimmy John's. Here's the real shocker, they're not. Meats get cut the day before, the veggies get cut morning of, or day before depending how slow the night shift is the day before.
How are they not sliced everyday? Also a JJs manager--just because the lettuce you sliced at 9AM today is used for lunch the next day, doesn't mean it isn't fresh or wasn't sliced fresh.
If your store isn't doing prep every day, then Im afraid you are no better than Subway
Back around 2000 they had door hangers with the menu on one side and funny messages on the other. One said "Yes the moaning is coming from in here" along with a lot more text. I've been unable to find one since. Have you ever seen anything like that?
Heard about it but have never seen it myself. JJs used to be a lot more risquรฉ with their advertising. But now, it is much more important to make sure no one is offended.
Frankly, I don't believe that they've cut their meat and veggies fresh every day. I think there is one heap of veg and meat that was cut fresh on opening day in 1983 and they've just been using veg and meat from that pile ever since. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I'll look at it though.
Reconstructed and Reconstituted Meats are seen as "Unnatural Meats", I mean they don't have flavour because they're basically mush that nobody would usually eat by choice. Clumped together into meat shapes.
Subway is famous for using it, they state healthy then put shit meat and sugary sauces, which defeats the object.
Iโm pretty positive this is done intentionally as a form of dry humor. Their menu has a couple jokes on it, several signs in the restaurant have some serious looking signs that are jokes. The restrooms have signs lining the walls showing you all the different ways you can pee at a toilet.

It's similar to why Leslie Nielsen coming into the cockpit to repeat the same line over and over was funny in Airplane. It's unexpected at first. You think it may have been a mistake, or you are misremembering. Then it happens again and you start to clue in. Finally a fourth time and you go, "Oh those cheeky bastards!"

I agree that JUST repeating it isn't necessarily funny. But repetition can create humor by giving new context to the same line. In the JJ list example, the line is repeated slightly differently. Each new line adds a new dimension as you process the repetition. Did they mess up? Is that actually different from the others? Are they trying to get one past me? Etc.

It's intentional. Most people who go into the store won't read the whole thing, they'll just see this big, impressive looking list and scan it before they order. Most people will only read a few items off the list at random, and JJs want's everyone to read the same things while giving the impression that there's a lot of interesting facts about their chain, even if there really isn't.
Clearly the "all our meats and veggies are sliced fresh by hand" line is the one the designers of the ad wanted everyone to read, no matter where they started on the poster.

As someone who has worked for jj's, it is run by stoners, and we don't tend to double check things.
As for number 22 - most kettle cooked chips are packaged with less โairโ because the chips are less prone to breakage and donโt need the extra cushion.
So not actually unique or special in any way, whatsoever.
I have to agree. Jimmy Johns have always been too stingy with their 'natural hand-cut super special meat,' and their cheese has no flavor, so to make up for all that, they just pour, and I mean fucking POUR mayonnaise all over my sandwich until it becomes completely inedible and looks like something out of a bukkake film. The Jimmy chips though? They give me something to stuff my mouth and unintentionally stab my gums with while I cry over the mess that I've made trying to separate the puddles of mayo from my sandwich.

On the club sandwiches it's OK. But if you get anything off the sub menu, then it's too much because they scoop the top half of the bread out. You can ask them to leave in the bread at no extra charge, which I recommend.

I've found that sans mayo, I enjoy extra jimmy sauce (oil+vinegar) but if I don't eat it at the store, the bread is short of dissolving on one side

Oh that sounds way better than ours. I mean we have a few cool ones. "No shirt, no shoes, no problem, we deliver" a sign promoting sprouts that looks like a radiation warning sign. "Your mom wants you to eat our sandwiches" is my personal favorite. I think they just have a bunch of Jimmy approved signs in a catalog each local owner can buy from.

When I used to work there, we just gave the old bread away after like 8 or so, since we usually just end up throwing a lot away. We were pretty laid back though so it depends on the store.
I read somewhere it was a place where you're guaranteed a hit and that the place is stocked to ensure all participants get a guaranteed kill and trophy to take home. I live in the same city as him. Around here he tends to act like an asshole to the locales. He's not as well liked as he believes.

Townie. I used to date the chef who catered his private Christmas parties. Talk about a sexist, misogynistic ass. He let you know immediately if he disliked you. We'd see his flashy car around town occasionally. You knew it was him because he always parked his car further out in the lot but at an angle to take up three spots.

They donโt own 100% of it and corporate still has their rules and regulations that are expected to be upheld. So in turn those profits are still being used to pay for his hunts. Like i said nobody is expected to do business anywhere and because someone chooses not to go somewhere because of a moral stand point doesnโt mean theyโre flawed. Itโs a choice.

A Jimmy John's opened up a block from my house. I never stepped inside. Maybe it is the exotic animal hunting, maybe it is because they can't even get the sandwiches to look good in photos, but I kind of enjoyed watching the place get built and then ignored. It is gone now and I sort of feel sad because I can't watch it die any more.
Yeah it was one of the first times going there. The manager said they couldn't put anything on slims and suggested I get the premium sub with just mustard. That's crazy. Pay way more to just get Dijon? If I did that I'd get other stuff too. All I wanted was mustard that day and my only options were overpay or packets. Alls I'm saying is a Sandwich shop that won't smear mustard on a sandwich is pretty F'd up.
I don't like that business model in general, like with 5 guys burgers or even subway, you're paying for all the toppings up front so people who get everything are getting hooked up and if you just want a plain sammy you're getting bamboozled. Hoodwinked I tell yuh!
Yeah because it's just bread and meat or cheese and they want you to know you're buying that 25 cent piece of bread and $1 slab of meat or cheese for $5.10. When you could pay a dollar more and get a full actual sandwich with their awesome peppers :D best part about them imo.
Jersey mikes for their cheesesteaks. Erbs and Gerbs for their unusual subs. Potbelly for their toasted subs. Jimmy Johns for their quickness. Subway for their cheapness/convenience. Cheba hut for literally anything on the menu, god I love that place.
Their food was good, I think they had or have a cranberry wasabi sandwich. I just never felt like they filled me up and I could usually get better value for my money elsewhere.
Did you get it Mike's Way or did you just put whatever shit you want on there? If you just put lettuce, tomato, and mayo on it, you're right it's just another sub. Mike's Way is what makes them stand out.
Seems this is mostly a west coast problem. Almost all in the Pacific Northwest have closed as well. Apparently their supply chain is overly expensive compared to other franchises.

I'm not the OP of the comment, but I too do not like Jimmy John's.
They slather all their sandwiches in mayo, I am disgusted by mayo. I don't like to ask for it without because they usually mess up my order or get shitty with me for being picky because there's a lot of other toppings I don't like. I'm also not a fan of cold sandwiches, I prefer toasted. Not sure if JJ's toasts or not, I've only ever had it 2-3 times and all those times it was a cold sandwich someone either bought for me or I got at a luncheon and I had to scrape all the mayo and other toppings I don't like off. Essentially I don't like it because I'm a picky eater and there's nothing I can just order off the menu without asking for it a very specific way. Potbelly's, Quizno's, and Subway all have sandwiches I can just order off the menu with no hassle. I won't deny JJ'S has good bread, but I dislike their ordering style as well as those weird sprouts on the sandwiches.
Jimmy John's came to my town just a few years ago. The first and only time we tried them the bread was really hard. Not stale, but like hard, like it was in purpose. I hated it. I remember talking about in a comment and someone said that's Chicago style sub bread. No thanks.
Also, subway's great and they've always been consistent for me. I worked there as a teenager, my favorite thing was baking fresh bread all day, smells soo good.
For real. Just tastes like soggy lettuce and the price sucks. We needed to feed a triple class and ordered JJ platters. $14/person for this shit. The cookie alone is like 3x what any other restaurant charges when they all probably come on the same Sysco truck
I was introduced to Jimmy John's through a job where working through lunch was required periodically. When it happened they'd order food for us, but it was always Jimmy John's.
After about four of those meals I decided I'd rather not eat than eat Jimmy John's.
I also noticed the manager making the decision to work through lunch and her assistant who did the ordering never ate the stuff themselves.

This is on purpose. I worked at Jimmy John's for years, I'm not sure if they changed this bag design because I quit at the beginning of last summer but number 23 used to say "did I mention our meats are all natural?" just like it does here on their blog. I don't understand all the hate Jimmy John's is getting, where else can you order a sandwich over the phone and have it personally delivered to your house in under ten minutes?
Yeah, there's a lot of sandwich hate happening here. We prefer Jimmy John's in our house, mainly because they have the types of sandwiches that we want without having to ask for alterations. Plus, the kids that work at our local shop are really sweet and we'd like to support them by ordering delivery and tipping well.
I haven't personally eaten at Jimmy John's because it's never been in my town before, but from what everyone else is saying, their sandwiches are trash.

Food makes people really dive into the hyperbole for some reason. They are middling sandwiches, not really 'trash'. A couple notches above Subway in quality, really.
I don't have an opinion on Jimmy John's because it would be dumb of me to judge something that I haven't tried, really.
And honestly, Subway is really good in my opinion. I usually get the steak and cheese, though, so that could affect it because maybe their normal deli stuff is pretty bad. Quizno's, on the other hand, is godly in my opinion. I absolutely love their food.
I think it's hard to find a place that doesn't have at least some merit. I like subway because of the varied toppings and think that balances out the sub-par deli side. They'd be great if they just upped their cold-cut quality, but that probably pushes them into a price point that their main demographic (at least in my area) wouldn't appreciate.

I don't understand why Jimmy John's is so popular. Subway has a bunch of toppings and sauces that not a lot of people have at home, but Jimmy John's just has mustard, mayo, lettuce, onions and tomatoes, and maybe a couple more. Shit everyone has at home.
Anywhere is better except maybe Subway, it's a toss-up. The good places are usually mom-and-pop places or an actual deli. All of the chains are pretty bland but JJ and Subway are the worst; most of their stuff sort of all tastes the same.
Subway is far superior to Jimmy John's simply because they have more options. Also, and this is important, in my experience Subway will generally put enough meat on your sandwich that you're sure it's there when you bite into it. At Jimmy John's you'd never know there was any meat there at all without visual confirmation. It may all be bland, but quantity helps.
i worked there for a few months and thought it was an annoying job (literally almost all of us only worked like three hours a day) but thought the sandwiches were pretty good, something about the bread makes it better than most other chains imo

From reading #15 first, I was left wondering what, exactly, is "unnatural" meat? #2 cleared up their definition = no artificial preservatives or MSG. But those are additives, the meat is still the same. What meat is "unnatural"?!
Wouldn't know; of the chains listed in this discussion, my country only has Subway's. However, I also highly doubt they'd be allowed to label as chicken something that's 60% soy here.
Edit: checked, their lists of ingredients for e.g. chicken fillets are 95% chicken, no soy at all. The Turkey cold cuts are 72% turkey, with water and then salt as the main ingredients, so probably at least 25% water. Again, no soy.
I think they're trying very hard to make sure you know that their meats and veggies are cut.

On a related note, we ordered Jimmy Johns to try them out as they recently came to our area a few months back. The delivery driver pulled up and a big smoke cloud wafted out when he opened the door to his car. He handed me the bag of subs and everything smelled like an ashtray. Our subs tasted like a cigarette butt, it was so bad, we threw out most of the food. We will not be ordering from there again.
I really was less than impressed with Jimmy Johns when one opened near me (so cal) - are they nationwide and are they actually any good? Am I missing something? They seem like a shitty quiznos, not that quiznos was particularly great.

In college they were great. 4.25 for a large sandwich and free delivery to my dorms. Not the best sandwiches but they were also open until 2AM. Pretty much lived on Jimmy Johns in college. But I prefer firehouse subs.

I was trying to give them some pity points for at least including baking there. Also, the more I kept reading into them, the more infuriated I was getting and I just had to stop.

I agree, this is pretty infuriating... but I'm pretty positive that this is completely on purpose. I think that they are trying to make sure that they get across to their customers these couple aspects to make sure that they know this. These two things may be their core aspects as a restaurant. I'm not sure, just sorta what I'm thinking.
So we can safely assume that JJs employees are cutting the cheese every morning since 19 hundred and 83! I am glad the meat and veggies are not old and unnatural. Those are not easily cut.
I got a sandwich from this place a while ago (1-2 months I think) and I'm pretty sure the packaging said on 23 "Did we mention that our meats are all natural?." Why would they change that of all things?

At the time I was dating the chef, JJ lived in this area. Beautiful palatial home that took up 2+ blocks near the country club. Gorgeous home, lovely wife. It's nice to see what sandwiches can buy if you are in the right market.
This place is the worst. What kind of sandwich shop doesn't have pickles to put on your sandwich? You can order pickle spears, but if you want pickle chips or banana peppers on your hoagie, you're shit out of luck. Plus, the bread sucks. Fuck you Jimmy John.
Jimmy Johns was founded in Charleston, IL. A lot of the early success can be attributed to Jimmy's willingness to deliver to the dorms of Eastern Illinois University.
A quick internet search will show you his insistence that employees sign non compete forms, which is illegal, and his company has been sued numerous times for it, and lost.
Oh yeah, and the whole getting a boner for shooting endangered species, that doesn't assuage people from thinking he's not a fat greedy bastard.
I haven't been to a Jimmy Johns since 2010, and I gladly never will.
So if you work for him he wants you to sign that you're never allowed to sell sandwiches for anyone else, or start your own shop? Yeah that's pretty shitty. And dumb, if it's illegal what's it gonna do anyway?
I don't care much about big game hunting, though. But I guess I never cared for JJ's either lol

And yeah, I think his companies have been sued multiple times, especially in NY State and Pennsylvania for operating those illegal non competes. Exactly, if it's illegal, why I even bother, their non-compete would never hold up in court. And they didn't. They lost multiple times.
I work at Jimmy John's and let me tell you, when we got those new bags (and cups) we were all just so over these stupid bags. Not to mention at least once a week, a customer will talk to us about how the facts are the same.

Anyone who's been to Jimmy John's a ton knows that this is part of their schtick. In college, they brought door hangers to advertise that had bad puns and dry jokes on them. I remember a few had sayings like, "This is your roomie's sock. Guess you're locked out for a bit, why not Jimmy John's while you wait?" I'll have to dig out my scrapbook, most of us kept them and added them to our door decorations.

There's actually a psychological reason behind it. People are more likely to be persuaded by a long list that has some repeated/silly reasons than a short list of accurate compelling reasons. This is because the majority don't read all the reasons, they just see that there are a lot of them.

Frankly, I don't believe that they've cut their meat and veggies fresh every day. I think there is one heap of veg and meat that was cut fresh on opening day in 1983 and they've just been using veg and meat from that pile ever since. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I'll look at it though.

The first two times are just a setup for the third time. He says that before they take off and while they are flying. Then the third time he says it after they've landed and they are safe... That's the payoff because they don't particularly need good luck and no one is counting on them [to fly the plane] anymore.

I agree that JUST repeating it isn't necessarily funny. But repetition can create humor by giving new context to the same line. In the JJ list example, the line is repeated slightly differently. Each new line adds a new dimension as you process the repetition. Did they mess up? Is that actually different from the others? Are they trying to get one past me? Etc.

It's intentional. Most people who go into the store won't read the whole thing, they'll just see this big, impressive looking list and scan it before they order. Most people will only read a few items off the list at random, and JJs want's everyone to read the same things while giving the impression that there's a lot of interesting facts about their chain, even if there really isn't.
Clearly the "all our meats and veggies are sliced fresh by hand" line is the one the designers of the ad wanted everyone to read, no matter where they started on the poster.

I have to agree. Jimmy Johns have always been too stingy with their 'natural hand-cut super special meat,' and their cheese has no flavor, so to make up for all that, they just pour, and I mean fucking POUR mayonnaise all over my sandwich until it becomes completely inedible and looks like something out of a bukkake film. The Jimmy chips though? They give me something to stuff my mouth and unintentionally stab my gums with while I cry over the mess that I've made trying to separate the puddles of mayo from my sandwich.

I donโt see how their reasoning is flawed? The owner of that franchise paid jimmy to take a part of his company. They donโt own 100% of it and corporate still has their rules and regulations that are expected to be upheld. So in turn those profits are still being used to pay for his hunts. Like i said nobody is expected to do business anywhere and because someone chooses not to go somewhere because of a moral stand point doesnโt mean theyโre flawed. Itโs a choice.

A Jimmy John's opened up a block from my house. I never stepped inside. Maybe it is the exotic animal hunting, maybe it is because they can't even get the sandwiches to look good in photos, but I kind of enjoyed watching the place get built and then ignored. Yeah it was one of the first times going there. The manager said they couldn't put anything on slims and suggested I get the premium sub with just mustard. That's crazy. Pay way more to just get Dijon? If I did that I'd get other stuff too. All I wanted was mustard that day and my only options were overpay or packets. I'm not the OP of the comment, but I too do not like Jimmy John's.
They slather all their sandwiches in mayo, I am disgusted by mayo. I don't like to ask for it without because they usually mess up my order or get shitty with me for being picky because there's a lot of other toppings I don't like. I'm also not a fan of cold sandwiches, I prefer toasted. Not sure if JJ's toasts or not, I've only ever had it 2-3 times and all those times it was a cold sandwich someone either bought for me or I got at a luncheon and I had to scrape all the mayo and other toppings I don't like off. Essentially I don't like it because I'm a picky eater and there's nothing I can just order off the menu without asking for it a very specific way. Potbelly's, Quizno's, and Subway all have sandwiches I can just order off the menu with no hassle. I won't deny JJ'S has good bread, but I dislike their ordering style as well as those weird sprouts on the sandwiches.

Jimmy John's came to my town just a few years ago. The first and only time we tried them the bread was really hard. Not stale, but like hard, like it was in purpose. I hated it. I remember talking about in a comment and someone said that's Chicago style sub bread. No thanks.
Also, subway's great and they've always been consistent for me. I worked there as a teenager, my favorite thing was baking fresh bread all day, smells soo good.

I was introduced to Jimmy John's through a job where working through lunch was required periodically. When it happened they'd order food for us, but it was always Jimmy John's.
After about four of those meals I decided I'd rather not eat than eat Jimmy John's.

This is on purpose. I don't have an opinion on Jimmy John's because it would be dumb of me to judge something that I haven't tried, really.
And honestly, Subway is really good in my opinion. I usually get the steak and cheese, though, so that could affect it because maybe their normal deli stuff is pretty bad. Quizno's, on the other hand, is godly in my opinion. I absolutely love their food.

I think it's hard to find a place that doesn't have at least some merit. I like subway because of the varied toppings and think that balances out the sub-par deli side. They'd be great if they just upped their cold-cut quality, but that probably pushes them into a price point that their main demographic (at least in my area) wouldn't appreciate.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'm kinda biased on that though, because I never really like cold cut subs anyways, which is why I always go for like meatballs or steak and cheese. Otherwise, I'm really not a picky eater and will enjoy most places.

I don't understand why Jimmy John's is so popular. Subway has a bunch of toppings and sauces that not a lot of people have at home, but Jimmy John's just has mustard, mayo, lettuce, onions and tomatoes, and maybe a couple more. Shit everyone has at home.

Anywhere is better except maybe Subway, it's a toss-up. The good places are usually mom-and-pop places or an actual deli. All of the chains are pretty bland but JJ and Subway are the worst; most of their stuff sort of all tastes the same.

Subway is far superior to Jimmy John's simply because they have more options. Also, and this is important, in my experience Subway will generally put enough meat on your sandwich that you're sure it's there when you bite into it. At Jimmy John's you'd never know there was any meat there at all without visual confirmation. It may all be bland, but quantity helps.

Wouldn't know; of the chains listed in this discussion, my country only has Subway's. However, I also highly doubt they'd be allowed to label as chicken something that's 60% soy here.
Edit: checked, their lists of ingredients for e.g. chicken fillets are 95% chicken, no soy at all. The Turkey cold cuts are 72% turkey, with water and then salt as the main ingredients, so probably at least 25% water. Again, no soy.

On a related note, we ordered Jimmy Johns to try them out as they recently came to our area a few months back. The delivery driver pulled up and a big smoke cloud wafted out when he opened the door to his car. He handed me the bag of subs and everything smelled like an ashtray. Our subs tasted like a cigarette butt, it was so bad, we threw out most of the food. We will not be ordering from there again.

I agree, this is pretty infuriating... but I'm pretty positive that this is completely on purpose. I think that they are trying to make sure that they get across to their customers these couple aspects to make sure that they know this. These two things may be their core aspects as a restaurant. I remember a few had sayings like, "This is your roomie's sock. Guess you're locked out for a bit, why not Jimmy John's while you wait?" I'll have to dig out my scrapbook, most of us kept them and added them to our door decorations.

My friend works for a city health department and I guess the Jimmy Johns in my city will physically block health inspectors to buy themselves time and force the inspector to call the police to gain access. I don't eat at Jimmy Johns anymore but I don't think they are as fresh as they claim.
