Nice part of Canada's new anti-spam legislation is that it makes things like this illegal. Mailers need a paper trail proving consent to commercial mailing.

Oftentimes the unsubscribe button won't permanently remove you from their email list but will only move you to a different schedule of marketing emails, so you'll still get about two per year just to see if you've "changed your mind" about unsubscribing and would like to start receiving their "exciting offers" again.
This kept happening to me with one company which was still sending me emails 7 years after I originally unsubscribed AND after I contacted their director of marketing twice by email asking him to remove me from all lists permanently. He kept saying he would take me off all their lists but somehow he kept missing something and every time we communicated he had this infuriatingly condescending attitude like I was an asshole for not wanting to receive these amazing emails from his awesome company for the rest of my life.
The last time it happened I wrote him in a rage and he said "Oops, I forgot to delete your email from this other master list, etc, etc."
And that's when I went a little crazy.
I spent 8 hours listening to music and subscribing his email address to about 6,000 newsletters. It was like I was taking out all of my rage at all spammers on this guy. Like I just couldn't stop. 8 hours sitting there in a kind of sadistic trance, subscribing him to thousands and thousands of newsletters, many of which had a tedious two-part unsubscribe process.
If you go to state and federal government websites you can find pages filled with lists of hundreds of newsletters where you can go down and check boxes to subscribe and then enter the email address and presto: you're subscribed to two hundred individual newsletters, for like the "Department of Fisheries," and other exciting things. I went to hundreds of pages like that in addition to the hundreds of commercial marketing subscriptions I signed him up for. Many newsletters only needed an email and no confirmation to subscribe. Some needed other more personal information filled out to subscribe and I got that info from searching him on the internet. I knew where he lived, had a picture of his house, knew what his wife looked like and what she did for a living, I knew the name of his kids, etc. My browser began autocompleting that information on longer subscribe forms and soon it was going very fast.
Many of these newsletters only came every few months, so there must have been hundreds of these things showing up continually but completely randomly in his inbox for a long time. And it delights me to ponder how many of those companies kept sending him stuff even after he unsubscribed, just as his company had done to me...
His email address must have become worthless or else he would have had to spend days and days tediously unsubscribing from all of that crap, and it would have kept coming for months. My guess is he had to delete that email address and start over with a new one, which would've also been a tedious process for him.
If I ever get another email from that company I will spend days subscribing him and all their top executives in the same way. I don't know enough about computers to launch a sophisticated cyber attack, but I can certainly do it the old fashioned way: manually, with the shear brute force of thousands of mouse clicks...
TL,DR: Beware ye spammers, turnaround is fair play.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:56:36 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I don't know if it's illegal but if so then this company did it to me first. I bought something from them online and without my consent they subscribed me to their spam list. Then despite unsubscribing multiple times and even contacting their marketing director I was still getting spammed 7 years later. I feel like I gave them more than enough chances to do the right thing. Finally I gave them a taste of their own medicine to drive the point home.
I think lady justice would side with me on this one.

That's why you skim. And why are you signing anything to buy a couple of AA's? In fact, why aren't you using rechargeable AA's whenever possible?
Edit: Downvoting because you can't be arsed to quickly skim through small text? Topkek.
Edit 2: TIL there's some stupid thing in America where you have to sign for most purchases you make. How strange and seemingly inconvenient, and to be honest rather creepy.
And why are you signing anything to buy a couple of AA's?
Because most places make you sign regardless of what you're buying. There isn't a batteries exception.
In fact, why aren't you using rechargeable AA's whenever possible?
How do you know they aren't? You still have to buy those.
[deleted] ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 23:32:40 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Because most places make you sign regardless of what you're buying.
That's really weird and quite stupid, I can see why some people are so mad that I suggested reading small text now.
How do you know they aren't? You still have to buy those.
The way it was worded makes it seem like they often have to go out and buy replacement batteries. With rechargeables, it's not that often that you actually have to buy some replacements.
Why? You use a debit card, you either enter a PIN or sign. You use a credit card, you sign. If you're under 35, there's a good chance you're doing one of those two things every time you buy something. A few places don't require a signature below a certain price (~$10-20, usually), but I've only encountered that at gas stations and fast food places, and not for a couple years (but I moved, so I'm not sure if they stopped doing that or just don't do it here).
With rechargeables, it's not that often that you actually have to buy some replacements.
Most of the time when I buy batteries, it's because I bought a new item that requires batteries. If all your rechargeable batteries in use and you get something new, you need to buy batteries. Plus, most people (in my experience) keep regular batteries on hand in case they don't have any rechargeable ones charged when they need them. And some people just don't go through enough batteries to warrant the extra cost. If you buy batteries once a year, why bother?
I assume they used batteries as an example because they're relatively cheap and because they're something almost everyone buys occasionally, not because they buy them all the time.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:29:55 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
So that's another difference between the US. Everyone apparently pays for everything by card there, which explains why you have to sign so much stuff.
Everyone usually uses cash here. I have to say though, a lot of you Americans sure aren't very friendly when it comes to foreigners not knowing some small detail about your country.
Im sorry if i came across as unfriendly. I misunderstood what you were saying initially. I thought you were saying you shouldn't have to sign for something so cheap. I didn't realize you were thinking about paying with cash. I haven't used cash in years, so it didn't even occur to me at first. No, you don't have to sign anything if you pay with cash, no matter how much it costs. If you do, it's about the item itself (like signing over a car), not the cost.
Where are you from? From my understanding (and I might be mistaken), most of western Europe uses cards, but most of South America uses cash. I don't know about anywhere else.

You're totally right. For store cards they should say "Ok, If you just go over to our customer service desk there, they'll get you set up with a card and complete your purchase."
And there straight up shouldn't be three foot receipts with fine print.
[deleted] ยท -9 points ยท Posted at 22:23:03 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I don't know where you're from, but there's no small text on shopping receipts here.
And anything that I need to sign for, I don't give a flying fuck if you have to wait a few minute. I do not sign anything without reading it.
tang81 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:30:50 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
No fine print? They find a way. Like DirecTV their agreement is in 3 parts. 1 on a retail receipt, 2 online, 3 on the back of the work order if they do a repair. You need all 3 to get the full picture.
I especially like the work order. Here, sign this saying you authorize to let me in your home to look at the box. Scan it. Yup it says that. Oh wait, flip it over and you see that you just signed up for a 2 year contract. Yaaaay DirecTV.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:38:13 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I've never been to a shop where I have to give my email address or any personal information to make a purchase, so I don't see how they would find a way. The only times that happens is when I've had to sign something anyway, and you're an idiot if you just blindly sign something without reading it.
[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 22:59:06 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It's not exactly difficult. How many things do you sign or put your details into per day? If it's enough to make skimming the small text a chore, then you should probably pay more attention to what you're signing up for.
raedeon ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:58:10 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
If you read all the fine print of all the products/services you buy... It would take you a couple hundred hours per year.
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:06:45 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Doesn't for me, but I have only just discovered that the reason everyone's so mad at me for suggesting it is because you have to sign for almost every purchase in the US, so I can imagine it would do for an American.
Here you'll only really have to sign for something and read small print if you're signing some sort of written contact. Any other purchase you just hand over the money with no questions asked (except proof of age if it's an age restricted product).
I can't think of any reason at all why you would need to sign something just to buy something like a bottle of Coke.
Some places require a signature if you pay with a card even if it's only a dollar or two. You don't have to sign if you're paying cash.

Unfortunately as long as they have consent to email you "something" they'll email you "anything". Davids Tea has a loyalty program, I asked to only be emailed about shit directly relevant to my account and opted out of marketing. I got an email every day over the holidays about holiday tea gift sets and "last minute gift ideas and stocking stuffers" that had "you have X points" in tiny print at the bottom.
America has an opt out law, not an opt in law. To be honest, it's much better. All you have to do it click unsubscribe. Why not give them a chance to contribute to the economy and then click "unsubscribe" if you don't like what they're laying down?
11_guy ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 00:38:21 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's not really true. Canada's new anti-spam legislation actually allows companies to send commercial electronic messages (email marketing) to any customer with whom they have established a business relationship with, for up to two years (or until they opt-out) from the date they established that relationship. A "business relationship" can be created based on a transaction, so technically any retailer you visit in Canada is allowed to add you to their mailing list if you purchase something and give them your email. Even if you opt-out, that consent is reset after every transaction you make with the company.
Pentapus ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:40:03 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hmmm, sounds like a bummer. I know there was a lot of hubbub in the non-profit community when it came into effect this Summer surrounding the need for consent and the limitations imposed. That may have been exclusive to non-profits, then.
Is that for the existing database or does that pertain to the new entries as well? When this new law came into play it was assumed to basically render any list with Canadian email addresses as useless because not many businesses had a double opt in system already in place...maybe some but it's certainly rare. And if that was the case then it would make the whole list useless, because well, how would you know where any user's email address came from if it wasn't blatantly obvious?
11_guy ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:09:00 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Working for a big retailer, we spent a big chunk of this past year preparing for casl. I don't consider myself an expert on the law but I caught enough insight and main highlights while working with our legal team that I'm confident enough to speak on this.
From what I understood, as long you have a record of when/where you obtained a subscribers consent, they will be grandfathered into your list post Casl (July 1, 2014). Starting July 1 those existing subscribers have a limit of three years before you need to re-obtain their consent. Businesses who were freaking out were mainly those who buy lists from other companies, because technically they could not prove that a subscriber has opted in to your particular business. These are the types of subscribers who a business would had to have re-obtained consent from before Casl otherwise they'd have to drop them from their lists.
A bit more on this...
There are two types of subscriber consents to receive emails from your company, explicit and implicit consent.
Explicit consent is when a subscriber signs up to your newsletter and checks a box that says "I want to receive emails from you". Post casl these customers are on your list until the day they decide to unsubscribe.
Implicit consent allows a business to communicate with you if you have entered into a business relationship with that customer (transaction). You can email these people for up to two years (as I mentioned) or until you gain their explicit consent.
Yeah, I get it. I actually just came home from Miami last weekend and it's only 10 degrees warmer there than here. It was much warmer in other places in Florida, though. My point is that Canada is not a barren wasteland of snow everywhere. It's so mild right now no one is wearing winter coats, and certainly not boots or gloves. I just came home from Christmas shopping without a coat at all. Summer time here is almost unbearable at about 90F with 100% humidity.
Jup, in Holland we can always sign up for receipts online (not sure about physical shops, but who uses those right?!) and there is ALWAYS a check box to receive their newsletter, never get any spam.
Just click "report as spam" every time. I worked for a marketing company and a lot of people would crap their pants at the thought of getting put on a spam blacklist.

I worked at urban for a year, this is an URBN CO. policy thing now (which owns Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Anthro). If you're broke you're broke, but if Nordstrom is just a bit pricey for your budget check out their half-yearly sales. The stuff still isn't inexpensive but it lasts, and you can return it pretty much ever if you have problems with anything.
capnjngl ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 21:38:53 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
YMMV but I've always found the Rack to be pretty cheap
I don't know why you're getting downvoted, you're correct. A lot of the stuff in NR, like TJ Maxx/Marshall's, is direct-to-outlet and is typically a lower-quality "diffusion" line than the stuff you'd find in a full-priced store. This article explains it pretty well.
I mean, decent discounts, but some of the merchandise there is really expensive, so a $500 sweater would be reduced to $150, which is a good discount, but not cheap. Many items are pretty cheap, but there is lots of stuff that isn't.
A $500 sweater being sold for $150 is a $150 sweater until you can show me an instance of someone buying it for $500.
Similar to when I bought a suit from Joseph A Bank. It's not a high end suit place, on par with Men's Warehouse (who actually owns JAB now). The tag in the store said $650. All I said was "I like it. The tag says $650, what's the actual price?" And the guy came back and said "$260". I've never seen it sell for more than $275 online and knew that was roughly the actual price. Therefore I own a $275 suit, not a $650 suit. The $15 discount was better than expected though I'm not delusional and I realize I only saved $15 on this suit.
[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:12:03 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Cheap is relative to value. I'm surprised you haven't figured that out yet.
Well, when the sweater is still $150 and it's 50% acrylic, as someone who knits and knows what yarn costs retail (not wholesale), yeah, no, not cheap, and not a good deal.
[deleted] ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 02:18:41 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Oh sorry I didn't know you were referring to a specific sweater you didn't link or mention you actual retard.
Yeah, and some of their stuff is a great deal. I have yet to find a sweater there that isn't vastly disappointing at the price point they put it at, regardless of the reduction.
I just say "I'm not giving you my email address" and carry on with my day. If they ask more than once or offer me a store credit card or some shit I get more snippy. If I'm buying an item that may need to be returned / warranty replaced, I just scan the receipt.

I've started using variations on my name when I give info to companies (unbwogablle or unnbwogable, you get the idea, but using my actual name), so if I get spam, it's a tad easier to identify who sold it. Not that it matters or that I can do anything, but makes me feel better. I have one company that has started spamming me and now sends me 11"x14" magazines of their services and articles and crap that I never asked for, and have asked repeatedly to be unsubscribed from. I tracked it back to either Amazon or Samsung.
Impossible Mission is a video game for several home computers. The original version for the Commodore 64 was programmed by Dennis Caswell and published by Epyxin 1984. The game features a variety of gameplay mechanics, from platform, adventure and action games and boasted novel features for the time, such as digitized speech. Impossible Mission, which casts the player in the role of a secret agent infiltrating an enemy stronghold, is widely considered one of the best games for several platforms and inspired sequels, remakes and numerous ports.

Really? Gmail has been pretty good for me so far. Pressing unsubscribe and the spam button does the trick for at least 90 percent of college emails I've gotten.
2 is partially true. This is why a lot of email providers do not load the images right away and wait for your consent. Even cooler, Google now caches all email images to their servers first before presenting them to you, so the sender can't tell when the message was opened and who opened it.
I understand why Gmail did this but I do see a downside.
The savvy marketers I've seen know how to bucket their audiences into groups of who may be interested and those who are very interested - and they email accordingly.
With cached images, you lose data on reopens and can't get a real good gauge of a subscriber's interest.
Granted the savvy ones are rare and the rest of them just abused the system so much that everyone is getting punished now.
Legally it must work, otherwise you can easily get them into huge shit.
First, and easiest, is if it's a phishing email, report them to PhishTank, PhishTank is linked up with lots of major browsers (Chrome for sure, probably others), the second their domain is blacklisted it's basically useless (And if it's .com, costs them $10 more) because having a huge red warning tends to ruin their success rates.
Second, WhoIs the IP and report it to their host. Hosts hate spam due to the laws surrounding it and how it can get their IP ranges blacklisted from sending legitimate emails, even the most dodgy of hosts (Who allow DDoS attacks/spoofing IP source addresses/etc...) normally hate spam.
They can't force you to subscribe, give them a call or send an e-mail and demand they remove you from the system.

I get a lot of distributors signing me up everytime I order from them or meet their sales reps etc. As soon as I get one I unsubscribe.
These are legit companies though that use 3rd party sites like Constant Contact etc for their sales emails. I have yet to see one not remove me.
The only newsletter/sales that get through to my work email or my personal gmail are phishing/scam companies. But I'd say over 99% are caught by Gmail spam / my companies spam filter.
Part of my work involves Email marketing, and I know we honor every unsubscribe. If they use a legitimate tool like Mailchimp or Constant Contact, it generally takes care of itself. I don't know what these spammers use, but in the long run they're shooting themselves in the foot.
I don't want people who wish to unsubscribe on our email lists. Having low open rates/being reported for Spam makes it more likely your emails won't be delivered, or delivered as low priority in Gmail. I'd rather have a small list of people who want to buy what I'm selling than a large list of pissed off former customers.

Works well for me. Block all others, then use an old email or create another one for this purpose.
Oh here's another one. You click the unsubcribe button, and it says 'Please fill out the CAPTCHA below to unsubscribe." Of course, the CAPTCHA is one of those ridiculously complicated ones where half the characters are either a 5 or an S.
Doesn't always work, I've unsubscribed from multiple places and still get emails from some unfortunately.

This infuruates me to no end when people bitch about this. Gmail blocks the viagara shit, and I unsubscribe from any legitimate commercial emails. I have had the same address for about 10 years and I use it for everything.
I can count the annual number of real spamming that gets through to my inbox on one fucking hand.

Whoah! That was an awesome summary of my account, thanks man :)
Yep, I commented this on another post in this thread. I came dangerously close to missing out on the best job opportunity of my life because of setting up a filter like this.
Actually not quite. All marketing messages must contain an opt-out. Transactional emails are specifically exempt from CAN-SPAM. Things like receipts, shipping information, or privacy policy changes.
Some companies try to abuse this though, by sending you "transactional" surveys or follow-up coupons as "part of your purchase" that also happen to include their current sales.
Awfy ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:35:22 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The best one I've seen are account statements. I started collecting my "account statement" emails and started cutting them up to see what percentage was actually regarding my account and what was purely marketing or ads. Highest came out at like 85% of the email was marketing or ads with a tiny bit about my account.
Don't do that. I came dangerously close to missing out on the best job opportunity of my life by setting up an "unsubscribe" filter.
I had filled out an application, sent in my resume, all that jazz, and waited to hear back from them. Weeks passed and I heard nothing. On a whim, I checked my spam folder. Four separate emails telling me that I was selected to continue in the hiring process. The last one was from earlier that day, saying that they were rescinding the offer the next day.
Called them back immediately, and wound up later getting my dream job.
Deal with the spam if you must, but setting filters can have unintended consequences.

Gmail and Inbox do a great job of categorizing your emails. All of my spam emails go into one section called "Promotions" automatically and I don't get notifications for them. It has actually made me engage a lot more with email promotions as a result. Usually every few days I flip through my Promotions tab and look to see if there are any good deals from JCrew Factory, Amazon Local, etc. After a few weeks if I notice that I haven't gotten anything worthwhile from a particular company's emails, I just unsub.
As a retail employee, we don't want to ask you. We have to. I have to get a certain amount of email addresses or I get written up.

I heard the same thing about Target once, that cashiers are officially/unofficially required to get a certain percentage of customers to sign up for a debit card or they face tea and biscuits with their boss...

The refreshments may be nice but the conversation probably won't be.
It's infuriating. If I wanted a credit card, I'd do some research and visit a bank (online). Do people really make on the spot decisions to apply for credit? Can you really read over the fine print while standing at a register?
The target redcard isn't a credit card. It's kind of like a debit card and links directly to your bank account in the same way that PayPal or Amazon does.
We are encouraged to ask people if they'd like to sign up for a Target Redcard, but in no way is it enforced nor punishable for not getting any sign ups.
I really wish there was some way that we, the consumer, can fight back against wrteched policies like that. Beyond complaining to the manager on duty, which likely just translates to "oh that employee must've done it wrong, guess I'll punish them."
ajc1239 ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 01:09:41 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It usually isn't even up to the manager. That shit comes from corporate and they push it on the management.
Because managers still care - we did $20,000 yesterday at my store and my manager was upset that we lost a single sale worth $65 because another store had the same item still factory sealed.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:35:35 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The policy is probably coming from corporate anyway.
I hope you're looking for another job. Retail jobs are a dime a dozen and if you're getting written up for stupid shit like that, I'm sure you can find something better.

I don't take my anger out on employees, yet I always get stuck with the employee who has to sigh heavily and look so disinterested when I decline to give in to pathetic marketing ploys. I've had idiot employees/stores tell me they can't complete a transaction because of such BS.
sbooyah ยท 35 points ยท Posted at 23:40:01 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Probably because their bosses told them not to complete the transaction without an email. You can rest assured that the 'idiot cashier' does not give a fuck about getting your email address.
Oh, I wouldn't think they would be personally vested at all.
sbooyah ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:54:43 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Cashiers typically don't make any type of commission, and from being in cashier-type retail positions, other than the threat of your boss being mildly unhappy with your 'numbers', I literally can't think of any reason why they would be personally vested. At all.
...Because you are a member of a team. I've had jobs that were stupid, and I didn't stay there long. But if I work somewhere, I believe in the good a company is doing and will do my best to advance the company.
sbooyah ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:43:05 on December 26, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
But you are a part of the team that has no say in the marketing/advertising campaign. Just 'do your job' basically, there is no input from the cashier. So voicing your opinion about the marketing/advertising campaign to a person who has no say in the advertising campaign is useless, and treating them like shit because of something you disagree with is even worse.
Direct your opinion and shitiness to the correct part of the team. Otherwise, you're literally not doing anything but making a person feel like shit.
I don't think anyone needs to be treated like shit, it doesn't matter if you are a cashier or a CEO, you're just doing your job. No one needs to be accountable for anything if the autonomous person-hood of "the company" is the one making decisions.
sbooyah ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:28:24 on December 28, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I think CEO's and other people responsible for making decisions for a company can certainly sometimes make very anti-consumer decisions that will make consumers and customers in general very unhappy, and I believe it is important for consumers to voice their opinions, especially about anti-consumer policies and such. But make sure you do it to the right person. Blowing up at the cashier won't get anything done, he isn't the decision-maker on the policy that you're upset about.
jdepps113 ยท -51 points ยท Posted at 21:34:33 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, but who are we supposed to take our anger out on?
Sorry, but the CEO and the VP of marketing aren't there, and they aren't the ones asking for our email...you are.
You're "just following orders", I get it. Well, you reap the reward for following those orders.
It's always a good policy to write them a letter or e-mail if you really hate something. I'm not sure if it'll actually change anything immediately, but companies do pay attention to customer feedback, and it's a lot more effective than yelling at someone who can do literally nothing about it.
...what will you possibly accomplish by berating a cashier? Is it going to cause the store to change their policy? The employees are just trying to make ends meet. Stop shopping at the store if you don't like their policies.
Swillyums ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 21:48:57 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
If I'm at the counter of a store, and I find out they need my email address, I'm not going to just bail. I stopped and picked out stuff, but they're not getting my email address if I decide that's something I don't want.
You don't have to be rude, but you also don't have to give your email. What are they going to do? Kick you out? Just say no and hand them the money. No store on earth is going to refuse your money.
Eh? I was saying that we can see some people just want to vent because you have unnecessary downvotes, I just don't know what post you think I'm talking about
jdepps113 ยท -8 points ยท Posted at 01:18:14 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I guess I wasn't clear about what I meant, exactly. I didn't mean that I'll berate a cashier in a personal way. I will, however, voice to them my displeasure about their company's shitty policies.
I don't get paid minimum wage to hear you bitch needlessly. In fact, I think less of you for it - because not only are you flipping a shit over a minor inconvenience, you're also intentionally dehumanizing me for your own perceived benefit.
Congratulations, you're an asshole who doesn't give other human beings common courtesy and respect! I hope that makes you feel just wonderful.
jdepps113 ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 01:16:55 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'm not going to say "fuck you, cashier asshole, you're a dick" because I know you didn't set the policy.
But you can be damn sure I'm going to tell you, "Listen, I know you are just doing your job, but that policy fucking sucks and it's a shitty way to do business."
As the human-relations end of your company, you can expect to hear from customers about policies they don't like. That's just part of your job. When they go out of their way to be a dick to you in a more personal way, that's different.
When you said you would "take your anger out on" the cashier, I naturally assumed worse than you just saying you think it's a bad policy. That's a line I can hear a few times a day.
I still think you (and however many other similarly minded commenters) are seriously misplacing your efforts, though. You know those surveys or customer feedback things on the receipts? Those are what corporate cares about, and if even a fraction of the people upset by certain policies voiced that, I can guarantee you they'd go away.
Don't see a link to a website to fill out feedback on the receipt? Ask the manager for a way to contact corporate. They'll be happy to help, because the managers probably hate the policies as much as you do.
jdepps113 ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 01:36:17 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I guess I misspoke.
At any rate, though, a smart corporation has its finger closer on the pulse of its consumers and avoids taking actions that piss them off.
You shouldn't have to fill out a complaint card; their marketing department should be in direct contact with their sales staff to learn first-hand about these kinds of things.

It's because the cashier has absolutely no say in the matter. You're just wasting your energy and making some guys job a little harder.
Spend that energy writing letters to corporate about how asinine it is. Or start a viral twitter campaign about it. Basically anything else is more productive than yelling at the guy behind the counter.

I used to work in a very junior position and now that I am in a senior position my prior experience helps me make decisions - if previous customers of mine blatantly let me know something is wrong, I would think twice about implementing it. That's how customer service works.
omrog ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:22:11 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
In my experience these things are decided by people with marketing/business degrees who have never worked a till. Their job is to come up with this shit and it's the shop managers job to enforce it even if they think it's bollocks. A lot of emphasis is put on customer feedback so you're far more likely to get somewhere taking it out on that than making the life of a cashier worse than it already is, remember it's not just you who's made their day worse on a given day, that shit stacks up.
[deleted] ยท -7 points ยท Posted at 22:28:54 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe I just see it differently to you.
If they are polite and efficient when serving me, and not trying to upsell to me, then I am as pleasant as can be - I get a lot of pleasure from good service, and I notice when a cashier gives it, and I go out of my way to acknowledge it.
This type of selling grates me, but I am never overly rude with it.
That employee is often paranoid to ask or not ask. I remember trying to weigh out what are the odds the costumer would get mad vs what are the odds they are a secret shopper who would report me for not asking.
sbooyah ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:46:07 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It's because you're dicking around the wrong person in response, and it will do nothing but give a person who has no say in the site policy a negative experience for his day.
The cashier can't think 'oh wow he's right I better stop this email/upsell campaign'. It wasn't his idea to begin with.
If you're upset about store policy, speak to a manager, don't be a prick to the cashier.

Had this happen while Christmas shopping last year. Dude flat out refused to proceed until he got an email.
Sucks to be you, bro. You just added to your 20 people in line and being the only guy on register by having me leave about 15 things all over your counter and walk out.
Bought my father some stuff online from Brooks Brothers a few days ago and they wanted my phone number. My dumb ass gave it to them.
THAT NIGHT I received 3 telemarketer calls... Like what the fuck, guys...couldn't wait more than 6 hours before selling that shit? (And no, the calls were not Brooks Brothers)
[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:42:44 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)*
If you paid by card, they also have your name. That's probably enough to find and contact most of their customers, certainly anybody who owns any property. Did you buy an age-restricted item? Chances are they tapped your DoB into the register to clear the age check prompt and now they definitely have enough to find and contact you.
Now it would take a pretty unethical business to pull together disparate data points like that and match them up but it's certainly possible. I'm sure the reason most stores that ask for a zip code do so for market research rather than promotion but still, I'd rather not give them that information - it's just a zip code but it's still private.
Might occasionally need it for something, e.g. if you actually need a copy of that receipt or if they give you a prize for signing up for their mailing list.

I reply rudely. I know the retail employees don't have a choice, but on a macro scale if stores find this makes customers hostile I hope they will quit.
I doubt that will happen though, because most people don't find the need to be rude. A simple "no" usually suffices.
vfc2000 ยท -17 points ยท Posted at 20:19:55 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Well, change never happens when people don't try. I am just trying to be the change I want to see. I want to live in a world where capitalistic stores are met with hostility when they try and pull this shit so I will keep fighting the good fight and leading by example.
I understand that, but being rude to a sales associate who has no real power to do much of anything only makes their shitty retail job worse for that day. If you truly wanted to make change you would contact corporate offices or hq. I've worked in multiple stores (unfortunately) so I know how this plays out.
You'd probably be better off leaving them a bad Yelp review.

Cashiers are definitely not the same thing as "stores." Try using your analytical skills -- if they had power against "stores" as you so reductively see things, wouldn't they negotiate for higher wages?
Trust me, we understand your plight. However, being rude to the cashier doesn't do anything. It just makes them feel like shit. You being rude to the cashier won't get them to change the policies. Management doesn't give a shit about cashiers. Make your complaints directly to the corporate offices instead.

Then ask someone else. Your choice is to make a special exception for me or have me get rude. Period. Don't like it? Whine on reddit, but there is not a damn thing you can do, bitch. I don't have to be polite because you still have to do your job regardless because you're too chicken shit to strike and fight for a union at your workplace. Until you try to help yourself I have no pity register monkey. Just don't ask me and you won't have to deal with whatever retaliation I engage in to waste your company's time as a penalty for wasting my time. I think that's worth the cost of my own additional time.
its opt-out vs opt-in emailing. In the U.S. you can still do opt-out.
Trucidar ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:14:18 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I don't think it actually is. Looking at the website the rules are pretty vague. For example, simply entering a contract gives the company implied consent to contact you.
If you give your e-mail to the company without designated limitations, that's also listed under constituting implied consent.
No it isn't -- you type your email address on the "email my receipt and keep me up to date on future offers" screen and then they email you. It's 100% legal
Correct, and this email is generated from you agreeing to this email.
Mattho ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:26:55 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
EU as well. But they can get your consent easily and make it pretty hard to unsubscribe. It doesn't happen often though.
Awfy ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:31:40 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It is not illegal in the US. The CAN-SPAM Act (that's actually its name) was designed to apparently limit spam when in fact it kind of enables it. All it ensures is certain things must appear in the email such as a company's physical address and an unsubscribe link.
Source: I design HTML emails and need to know this stupid shit.
As of earlier this year, all "promotional commercial messages" must be explicitly opted into. Saying you want your receipt emailed would not count as consenting to be added to an email list.

Cashiers always get so offended when they ask for my email and I politely but flat out refuse. It's like I've mortally wounded them and they give me this look like "Why, why wouldn't you give me your email?"
Gmail automatically puts these types of emails in a promotional tab, I love it. I can't stand having paper receipts all over the place and love having emails as an option.
Marketing is huge for a business' success. Less and less people have newspapers (inserts) and cable subscriptions (adverts), and are buying items online, so brick and mortar stores need a way to reach customers to bring them in and make purchases. Brick and mortar stores are going to struggle even more as online purchases increase year over year.
So set up some filters, create a spam email, or don't give it to them.
Fun fact for EU redditors: Companies aren't legally allowed to cold-email peoole. However, they're allowed to send communications to existing customers. So if you buy something there and give them your email you're an existing customer and putting you on their spam mailing list is perfectly legal for them from then on.
Why else would they offer to email you a receipt? It doesn't help them at all. It is like signing up for a club card at a grocery store and being surprised that they use it to track your spending habits.

Get a Yahoo email account. Set it to forward 100% of your email to your regular account. Use their throwaway email addresses and create a unique email address per site. You can have emails to those addresses put into separate folders or remove the address altogether once they start spamming. Problem solved (for all future account creation).

I don't know why people are so peeved. This is the way to save money nowadays. For example, it is straight up stupid to walk into a Bed Bath and Beyond without that coupon. I, literally, have three or four saved up before I need something. If you take notes of your whims and exercise some self control, you can save money and get what you really want out of the retail experience. All you need a second email address for retailers.
Right, and there's nothing wrong with that. But when someone asks for a receipt to be emailed to them, they're not asking for coupons to be sent to them (forever). They're asking for a receipt. That's what's wrong with this.

Because most places make you sign regardless of what you're buying. There isn't a batteries exception.
How do you know they aren't? You still have to buy those.
[deleted] ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 23:32:40 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's really weird and quite stupid, I can see why some people are so mad that I suggested reading small text now.
The way it was worded makes it seem like they often have to go out and buy replacement batteries. With rechargeables, it's not that often that you actually have to buy some replacements.
alleigh25 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:20:49 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I have to say though, a lot of you Americans sure aren't very friendly when it comes to foreigners not knowing some small detail about your country.
alleigh25 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:14:43 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I don't know where you're from, but there's no small text on shopping receipts here.

tang81 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:30:50 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
No fine print? They find a way. Like DirecTV their agreement is in 3 parts. 1 on a retail receipt, 2 online, 3 on the back of the work order if they do a repair. You need all 3 to get the full picture.
I especially like the work order. Here, sign this saying you authorize to let me in your home to look at the box. Scan it. Yup it says that. Oh wait, flip it over and you see that you just signed up for a 2 year contract. Yaaaay DirecTV.

Then, because I was a pretty good student, I then received 10 or 15 emails a day from a ton of colleges that I never heard of. They completely drowned out the legitimate emails, and I missed a club or two because I couldn't find the legitimate emails in the sea of spam.
Eventually I switched emails because of the endless barrage of spam.

I tried that.
They got around it.
I filtered out college, university, degree and a few other terms, but somehow they got around gmail's anti-spam system and the filters I set up.

Instead of entering: myAddress@gmail.com
Enter: myAddress+uniqueTag@gmail.com
If they abuse your email filter everything sent to myAddress+uniqueTag@gmail.com directly to the garbage.
Some web forms do not allow the +uniqueTag after the myAddress; however, to gmail myAddress is the same as my.Addressโor my.A.d.d.ress, etc.โand can also be filtered for.

Spammers/marketers already know this trick. They can run a script to go over their whole mailing list and automatically remove +whatever at the end of every gmail address, or any periods. You may catch some junkmail this way, but this will not protect you from spammers.
MovkeyB ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:32:06 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Currently I have a spam email that auto-forwards to my main, and when it gets overspammed I delete it and start again.

That may have been exclusive to non-profits, then.
inthedrink ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:10:16 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hope that helps.

My point is that Canada is not a barren wasteland of snow everywhere. It's so mild right now no one is wearing winter coats, and certainly not boots or gloves. I just came home from Christmas shopping without a coat at all. Summer time here is almost unbearable at about 90F with 100% humidity.

I worked at urban for a year, this is an URBN CO. policy thing now (which owns Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Anthro). We're trained to just say "What's your e-mail for the receipt" instead of asking if they'd like to receive e-mails. Employees are required to give their email for every purchase.

Many items are pretty cheap, but there is lots of stuff that isn't.
tangerinelion ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:45:46 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I've started using variations on my name when I give info to companies (unbwogablle or unnbwogable, you get the idea, but using my actual name), so if I get spam, it's a tad easier to identify who sold it. Not that it matters or that I can do anything, but makes me feel better. I have one company that has started spamming me and now sends me 11"x14" magazines of their services and articles and crap that I never asked for, and have asked repeatedly to be unsubscribed from. I tracked it back to either Amazon or Samsung.

RedAnarchist ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 22:53:26 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's not true in the slightest.
1) not honoring an unsubscribe is one of the only illegal activities you can perform under the U.S. CAN-SPAM act.
2) they know you're email works as soon as you open an email and load an image or click a link.
volkovolkov ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 23:44:40 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
2 is partially true. This is why a lot of email providers do not load the images right away and wait for your consent. Even cooler, Google now caches all email images to their servers first before presenting them to you, so the sender can't tell when the message was opened and who opened it.
RedAnarchist ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:21:49 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
FlashingBulbs ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 22:35:39 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

SpartanERK ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:33:22 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

All transactional emails (basically any sort of mailing list) require an opt-out and it must be honored. At least in the US.
NotSafeForShop ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:32:45 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Citizen_Snips29 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:06:14 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Deal with the spam if you must, but setting filters can have unintended consequences.
geoman2k ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:37:43 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Gmail and Inbox do a great job of categorizing your emails. All of my spam emails go into one section called "Promotions" automatically and I don't get notifications for them. It has actually made me engage a lot more with email promotions as a result. Usually every few days I flip through my Promotions tab and look to see if there are any good deals from JCrew Factory, Amazon Local, etc. After a few weeks if I notice that I haven't gotten anything worthwhile from a particular company's emails, I just unsub.

You can rest assured that the 'idiot cashier' does not give a fuck about getting your email address.
jabbakahut ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:42:53 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
At all.
jabbakahut ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:30:51 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
...Because you are a member of a team.
Otherwise, you're literally not doing anything but making a person feel like shit.
jabbakahut ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:09:43 on December 27, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Well, you reap the reward for following those orders.
twominitsturkish ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 21:47:38 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It's always a good policy to write them a letter or e-mail if you really hate something. I'm not sure if it'll actually change anything immediately, but companies do pay attention to customer feedback, and it's a lot more effective than yelling at someone who can do literally nothing about it.
sloppydancer ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 21:40:30 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
...what will you possibly accomplish by berating a cashier?

I guess I wasn't clear about what I meant, exactly. I didn't mean that I'll berate a cashier in a personal way. I will, however, voice to them my displeasure about their company's shitty policies.
_depression ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 22:38:54 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
_depression ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 01:33:27 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
You shouldn't have to fill out a complaint card; their marketing department should be in direct contact with their sales staff to learn first-hand about these kinds of things.
omrog ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:44:01 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

For a pessimistic panda you sure are optimistic about the ability to quit any retail job you want because one thing about it wasn't ideal and then turn around and find something better.
It's a minimum wage job, there is going to be bullshit to deal with no matter where you go because employees are so expendable.
ricodued ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 01:26:41 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
When I worked as a cashier I was always pushed to sell the extended protection plans, even on stupid shit like $15 electric toothbrushes.
I never, ever tried to sell that shit unless the customer asked for it or it was a reasonably expensive item like a TV.
Week after week I'd have no plans sold, never got "written up" or any bullshit like that.
Glad that part of my life is behind me. Fuck that noise.

In the UK (WHSmith and petrol stations especially), they ask us if we want a bar of chocolate for ยฃ1, or a bag of mini doughnuts. When they do this to me I will ask them if they want to buy a wallet, or a set of keys or a mobile phone.
I DO NOT WANT CHOCOLATE! IF I DID I WOULD HAVE PUT THAT ON THE COUNTER WITH THE STUFF I DID WANT!
Sorry.

Don't dick the cashier around for something they know is asinine but are made to do. It's some other idiot that implements this mandatory policy and another idiot manager who cares enough to enforce it.
[deleted] ยท -18 points ยท Posted at 21:51:54 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
When they stop dicking me around I may stop.
Are you saying that because I am a mere customer (keeping the cashier and the shop in business) that I deserve to be dicked around but the staff don't?
YRYGAV ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 22:15:11 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It's because the cashier has absolutely no say in the matter. You're just wasting your energy and making some guys job a little harder.
Spend that energy writing letters to corporate about how asinine it is. Or start a viral twitter campaign about it. Basically anything else is more productive than yelling at the guy behind the counter.

[deleted] ยท -16 points ยท Posted at 22:13:06 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
This type of selling grates me, but I am never overly rude with it.
karma-cloud ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 23:43:38 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Reductive ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 20:30:25 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Wow, that's got to be one of the most moronical things I've ever read.
Cashiers are definitely not the same thing as "stores." Try using your analytical skills -- if they had power against "stores" as you so reductively see things, wouldn't they negotiate for higher wages?
NemesisKismet ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 20:21:43 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Trust me, we understand your plight. However, being rude to the cashier doesn't do anything. It just makes them feel like shit. You being rude to the cashier won't get them to change the policies. Management doesn't give a shit about cashiers. Make your complaints directly to the corporate offices instead.
vfc2000 ยท -22 points ยท Posted at 20:29:35 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Then ask someone else. Your choice is to make a special exception for me or have me get rude. Period. Don't like it? Whine on reddit, but there is not a damn thing you can do, bitch. I don't have to be polite because you still have to do your job regardless because you're too chicken shit to strike and fight for a union at your workplace. Until you try to help yourself I have no pity register monkey. Just don't ask me and you won't have to deal with whatever retaliation I engage in to waste your company's time as a penalty for wasting my time. I think that's worth the cost of my own additional time.

Canadian here. It is illegal.
Vahnya ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 20:14:40 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
In a sense. You have to consent to receiving emails. They can still email you if you consented to giving it to them.

cloudmerchant ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:00:08 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
You basically have to have done business in the last year for it to still be legal. Otherwise, they need your express permission.
RedAnarchist ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:54:33 on December 23, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
its opt-out vs opt-in emailing. In the U.S. you can still do opt-out.
Drunken_Economist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:38:54 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
No it isn't -- you type your email address on the "email my receipt and keep me up to date on future offers" screen and then they email you. It's 100% legal
cloudmerchant ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:49:26 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Right, but you have to agree. Otherwise the business can be fined. They can't just arbitrarily email you.
Drunken_Economist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:04:27 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Fun Fact: This is now illegal in Canada.
As of earlier this year, all "promotional commercial messages" must be explicitly opted into. Saying you want your receipt emailed would not count as consenting to be added to an email list.

All you need a second email address for retailers.
most_superlative ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:30:49 on December 24, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's fine if you want coupons. Asking for an emailed receipt and getting this bullshit is completely different.

Right, and there's nothing wrong with that. But when someone asks for a receipt to be emailed to them, they're not asking for coupons to be sent to them (forever). They're asking for a receipt. That's what's wrong with this.
